ALLWE WANT IS OUR SURPLUS
Allowances have been an ongoing issue that has dominated students.
Meanwhile, VUT also has beengiving the B.Ed. Students from the Sebokeng Campus a lot of problems. In 2022 things started changing when the institution notified students that they were not going to receive surplus, the amount that’s left after the deduction of the fees, and sign allowance contracts that will assist them in reserving learning resources or book allowances suchas laptops.
TheFunzaLushakapolicysaysstudentshavethe right to claim their surplus to the maximum amount, with the policy further stating that students must be given a chance to sign their contracts withunderstanding.
The situation made students expropriate a stance as they marched to VUT financial offices in Vandebijlpark campus to demand justice.
SRC member Palesa Hlape who was leading the march, expressed her frustrationsofthesituation theyare facing “the reason for this surplus is for one to be able travel, Fundza Lushaka can say tomorrow go to Cape-Town to sign documents, I’ll need the surplus moneyto travelthere.”
With the ongoing issue, VUT has been blamed for perpetuating the aspects, whenstudents were given contracts to sign, the institution refused to give students an adequate opportunity to go through the contract, but instead, they were compelled to sign a contract as rapidly as possible without comprehending the procedures of the contract. The institution did not permit students to sign for an amount that Funza Lushaka has giventhem
Speaking during riots, a VUT student, who is doing her last year in B.Ed. studies, asked to remain anonymous. She added by saying, they came to finance department to ask about their contracts that they were supposed to sign with their bursary, because every year they must sign a contract that encompasses the amount of money that is allocated to students. But the unfortunate part of it is that the institution doesn’t want to give students the exact amount of money that the bursary has rendered to them and the amount of money that is stipulated in a contract, while at the very same time the institutionsays students must signa contract but they do not state clearly the amount of money that students must sign for intheir contract. She further said “we have a portal that says we should be allocated with R116 000 per student, but the institutionsays it is highlyimpossible for us to get that amount. As B.Ed. studentsour fees differs, mine might be R104 000 some might be R107 000, but they want to give us a cooked amount of money”.
During the controversies with the institution, studentsdidnotagreewiththecookedamountof money VUT wanted to give them, as it didn’t make sense to them. Students claimed that they cannot usethe verysame bursary, but not get the same amount of money, again students did not attain the email from the institution that notifies them regarding the allocation of allowances, but instead the institution just appeared into thin air telling students to sign contracts without induction and without elaborating and further discussing the contracts with students. Because of ongoing issues of student allowances, they madeit clearthat sometimesforthemtogettheir allowances, the institution drags their feet in distributing allowances to students.
The SRC member Palesa further explained that “VUT is just a middleman between them and Funza lushaka to students, the agreement is between us and Fundza, they have no right to take our money, we are going to paythe bursary back. I’ll never encourage a student to do B.Ed. at VUT, they are treating us like step children.” said SRC member.
The institution made it clear when they gave feedback to students that if they didn’t sign the contract, they were going to freeze their money. Ultimately, that condition compelled students to signthecontracteventhoughbothpartiesdidnot meet anagreement.
On the 29th of September, Funza Lushaka officials promised to pay a visit to the VUT SebokengCampusinSizeParktotryandresolve the issues that students are facing.

This comes after the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) introduced a new direct payment method system for student allowances in 2022. After being piloted at Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Colleges, the new direct payment system was rolled out at universities in June 2023.

However, this method of payment raised a bar about students struggling to receive their money causing concernto students. Meanwhile, this situation caused riots to escalate at a lofty level at Vaal University of Technology, where students were complaining about the new direct payment method that is a scam to students. The loss of young lives is always tragic and heartbreaking. It is important to clarifythat the deaths of young girls should never be seenas a trend. However, it wasn't always like this. Occasionally, notifications of high-profile figures would come through, but the situation has worsened over time. As the number of deaths of young girls continues to rise, it is crucial to address the underlying issues that contribute to this alarming trend. Society must recognize the importance of protecting and empowering young girls, ensuring their safety and well-being. Efforts should be made to create a supportive environment that fosters equality, education, and opportunities for girls, ultimately preventing such tragic occurrences inthe future.

It is all about accountability, we are entrusted with public funds, whicharegovernedbypolicieson what theymust beutilized for. So, we have to put in place systems that are intended to root out mischief where it is found, sometimes NSFAS cases of falsified information or contradicting information that was used by people to get positively assessed as beneficiaries.
Earlier this year, it was found that between 2018 and 2021, the scheme lost billions in bursaries that were allocated to some 40000 students who did not qualify. The scheme said it is undergoing a remedial process to defund students who supplied incorrect information in their applications. NSFAS affects defunded students because they willhavetofindalternativemeans to cover their tuition fees, accommodation, textbooks, as this canput a significant financial burdenonthemandtheir families. Defunded students may struggle tocontinuetheirstudies, theymay have to drop out or take break from their education until they find alternative funding sources, this candisrupt their academics
progress and delay the completion of their degrees. The uncertainty and stress of losing financial aid can have negative impact on students’ mental wellbeing. They may experience anxiety, depression, or feelings of hopelessness due to the financial strain and the fear of not being able to continue their education.
One of the students interviewed, Bonolo Lephoto, from University of Limpopo said, “I am very stressed because I don’t know what will happen next year if I don’t get funded again, I don’t have anyone whocanpayformyfees or accommodation”.
Thandeka Ngobeni, another student affected, from Vaal University of Technology said, “I have expressed frustration, anxiety and depression due to the uncertainty and stress caused bythe defunding; I amnot gettingmyfoodallowanceandam coming from a low-income background my parents are not working but they are trying to provide money for me to buy food”.

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa haswonasecondand final term in office in an outcome that has been rejected by the opposition and questioned by observers. The election took place in the context of a continuing economic crisis in Zimbabwe, withthecountryfacing highlevels
of inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
Despite this challenging environment, Mnangagwa was widely expected to secure reelection, given his role as the incumbent and the heavilyskewed contest in favor of the ZANU-PF party, which has ruled the country since its independence and the end ofwhite minorityrule in1980.
Mnangagwa took over from longtime leader Robert Mugabe after a 2017 army coup that ended Mugabe's 37-year rule.

He ultimately emerged victorious, withthesupportofthemilitaryand
the party's hardliners, who were wary of Mugabe's growing influence onthe party.
The 2018 election was seen as a critical test for Mnangagwa's legitimacy, as he sought to establish himself as a democraticallyelected leader after taking power through a military intervention. However, the election was marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities, with the opposition and independent observers raising concerns about the integrityof the electoralprocess. The opposition candidate, Nelson Chamisa, challenged the results in court but was unsuccessful in overturning Mnangagwa's victory. Thedisputedelectionresult further deepened the political and social
divisions in Zimbabwe, with the oppositionandcivilsocietygroups accusing Mnangagwa of authoritarianism and lack of commitment to political and economic reforms.
The government, in turn, has accused the oppositionoftrying to destabilizethecountryandcollude with foreign powers to undermine Mnangagwa's rule.
Overall, the 2018 election highlighted the challenges facing Zimbabwe as it seeks to transition to a more democratic and prosperous society, with the need for politicalandeconomicreforms that can address the root causes of the country's crisis and promote greater social inclusion and accountability of the Zimbabwean economy.

This Mzansi Magic Original series, produced by Bomb Productions, is an enthralling exploration of a legendary figure in African history. It tells the tale of the extraordinary life of the iconic African king, King Shaka kaSenzangakhona, tracing his transformation from early childhoodto adulthood.
Withspecialattentiontodetail, the series presented an authentic portrayal of Nguni culture, respecting its heritage while incorporating a fictional interpretation of historical events. Six years in the making, the production sought guidance from historians, academics, and the royal family’s descendants, including the late King Goodwill ZwelithiniandPrinceMangosuthu Buthelezi.
"Shaka iLembe" features a phenomenal cast of outstanding
actors such as Lemogang Tsipa as the adult king, newcomer Ntando Zondi as the young Shaka, Nomzamo Mbatha as Queen Nandi, Senzo Radebe as King Senzangakhona, Thembinkosi Mthembu as King Dingiswayo, and many more.
In contrast to the 1986 television series broadcasted on SABC, the current rendition was made without any help from Americans to avoid making anycompromises when it came to the story’s authenticity and the way Zulu culture was portrayed.
The show captivated viewers with its remarkable cinematography and visually stunning portrayal, showcasing the enchanting beauty ofAfrican landscapes. The show has been produced at a world-classscale,whichhasraised the standards of South African Film andTVto greater heights.
In an interview with Zaza BrandZA Communications, Nomzamo Mbatha shared “We wanted it to be in vernacular language, hence the isiZulu insteadofEnglish, toshowthat we are not apologetic ofwho we are.” Whichreallygavearefreshingand authentic feelto the show. The dedicated costume designers and wardrobe team also went into extensive research to recreate authentic attire fromthe 1700s. Furthermore, King Shaka is depicted in a refreshingly realistic view, presenting a more humanized portrayal that moves
away from previous depictions whicheither labeledhimasamass murderer or a superhumanhero. Shaka iLembe managed to deliver outstanding ratings for DStv and left SouthAfricans inawe. Itgathered3.6millionviewersand kept them glued to their screens only with the first episode and even reached No. 1 on the DStv app across Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and other African countries. ONLINE LEARNING CRISES
The rise of online learning brings crises to students.
By Rethabile Molehe
Online learning has had a tremendous rise over the past few years.
Perhaps one good thing COVID 19 gave us, is the possibility of online learning. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, with lockdown and measures that were put inplace, it meant the only way forward was digitally.
Ever since then, online learning has beengrowing rather quickly.
As it has shown the possibility of working online, anadvantage for
those who want to work while still furthering their studies. According to Devlin Peck 49% of students worldwide have completed, some sort of online learning. While 70% of students say it’s better than traditional school learning. While it’s more affordable, it has been criticised for the lack of affection to the students, with some mentioning howdemotivatedtheyoftenfeel. FOR WOMEN, AGE AND UNEMPLOYMENT COMPELUS TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT DO NOT SUIT OUR INTEREST
The scarcity of jobs in South Africa is one of the major problems the country is facing currently, and this is an ongoing aspect that causes an immense depression to many people within the country, contemporaneously age does not favour people in modern days in certain companies.
By Simamkele Mlambisa
Mam Nomathemba Maduna who is a matron at Vaal University of Technology Residences, revealed that due to the lack of job opportunities in our native country, people end up expropriating jobs that do not suit their interests at all, but a justification could beanagethat compelspeopletoendup taking those decisions. After the death of Nomathemba's husband in 2009, she began to consider herself a man and a woman in her house because she was supposed to be responsible for her family. She started getting employment at Vaal Restaurant in Vereeniging, but due to unfortunate events such as the coronavirus pandemic that wracked havoc in 2020, she ended up being retrenched. But that was not the only justification behind that dire situation, she was supposed to take care of her children and her one grandchild so she could not handle the pressure of night shifts as a woman.
Maduna added further by saying, that becauseGodisgreat, shedidcontriveto get employment at one of the VUT residences named Academia Mixed Residence, but with the income she attains from her current job, she is not content because her needs do not correspond with the income. However, because of the scarcity of jobs in our country, she decided to remain in her current job because she did not want to move to other workplaces where she would face ups and downs.
Ever since we are in Women's Month, Maduna exhorted every woman out there to be independent and not to be reliant, because the only way to halt Gender Based Violence in our country is for women to stop being passive to men and not abdicating themselves to men for necessities.

EXAMS COMING BACK TO VUT?

By Rethabile Molehe
Like most high learning institutions, the exams had been put on hold since the disruption of COVID-19. However, bringingitback, hasproventobea difficult challenge to achieve for most institutions. Exams couldn’t have come sooner for the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Applied & Computer Sciences, Professor Grobler. She explained how the exams had come later than she’d hoped, while also sharing the risks and danger of students not writing exams, especially in the science and engineering fields.
During 2022, a plan was initially put forward, to bring back exams for the year 2023, but with the SRC’s lack of enthusiasm to the idea, along with the
NSFAS and Wi-Fi issues, each faculty had to decide what they are going to do for assessments in 2023In thethree-year suspensionoftheexams, theinstitution has been using a system called CASS ‘continues assessments’, where three, sometimes four assessments are written per module. According to the Prof, Professional bodies, like Health Scientist, Health Professions council of South Africa, South African Nursing Council and Engineering Council of South Africa have shown their dissatisfaction with the online assessments, especially without the proctoring tool that is yet to be implemented. And for that reason, the engineering faculty has requested for exams for the second

STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SEEKING HELPING UNIVERSITY
ByMaripa Jeremia Maluse
Arecent report bythe SouthAfrican Depression andAnxietyGroup (SADAG) has revealed distressing figures, indicating that 17.6% of teenagers in the country have made suicide attempts, with 31.5% of these cases necessitating medical intervention.
Additionally, startling findings show that 1 in 4 university students have been diagnosedwith depression. TheWorld Health Organization (WHO) adds to the concern, emphasizing that halfofall mentalhealth conditions begin beforethe age of14, yet a significant number remain undetected and untreated.
SouthAfrica faces significant challenges in the realm of mental health, stemming froma cultural context shaped by enduring hardships. This has cultivated a tendency to suppress emotions and tackle personal difficulties independently, rather than seeking assistance. Unfortunately, there exists
a prevailing stigma surrounding mental health within friends, family, and societyat large, wherein seeking help and therapy is often perceived as a sign of weakness.
The challenging living conditions in our country also has a profound impact on mental health, as highlighted by numerous socialand structural factors. High levels of violence, poverty, unemployment, and inequality contributeto this pressing issue, affecting the well-being of individuals across our nation.
Bianca Brits, a registered counsellor in the Student Counselling sectorofVUT clarified “ Bottling up negative emotions is something that comes up so much with the students I talk to. Nobody wants to talk about negative emotions but when we have something positive happening in our life, it literally beams through us.
And in our culture, we are not allowed to vent or deal with them, instead we adopt to unhealthyways to cope with it, that is drinking, smoking, risky sexual behavior, etc When we bottle up negative emotions, we become so full that we don’t have any room for anything else. Even whensomething good happens, it is fleeting. So, bottling up emotions has a much more profound impact than people think.”
She alsomentioned that we engage in unhealthyways ofdealing with our emotions because they are not hard and theygive us instant, momentaryreliefor ecstasy. They also help us avoid them instead of dealing with them. Which is easier but usually have consequences. Incontrast , changing your habits, starting to exercise, meditating, expressing your emotions or journaling, you don’t get to see immediate relief but the

Perhaps one the most difficult career one can take, is being a psychologist. The study of mind and behaviour in humans and non-humans. For one to reachthelevelofbeingaprofessionalpsychologist, a lot ofstudying and determinationhas to be given. Unlike most careers where a degreeor diploma can land a job, to be a qualified in this field, one will have to studyuntilup until master’s level(NQF 9).
According to VUT’s HOD student council, Zandile Shabangu, “It’s not a difficult stream per say, you just need to be dedicated and focused, number two; you need to have passion to work with people.” While it takes 3 years to complete the BA psychology program, the minimum study period is 6 years, including a year of paid community service prior to registration as an independent practitioner.

LGBTQ students face regular discrimination at different places, may be health facilities, allocation of residence, place of worship and the list continues. The reason for this is mainly because they do not fit inthestereotypicalgender roles set by society. The fight for LGBT+ rights has come a long
way, but the battle for acceptance is far from over. The frustrating truth is that many members of the community just have trouble finding medical professionals they feel comfortable with, who don’t eroticize or judge them. Just taking the time to listen to LGBTQ+ patients, not trusting that they know what they are experiencing and what they need, seems like a low bar. The history of modern healthcare is full of gatekeeping and the pathologizing of LGBTQIA+ existence.
LGBTQIA+’ is an evolving acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex and asexual. There are many other terms (such as non-binary and pansexual) that people use to describe their experiences of their gender, sexuality, and physiological sex characteristics. Many people misunderstand that
these people live the same life as others and that there’s nothing wrongwiththembeingopenabout their sexuality.
Agay student from the University of Vaal, Peace Moichela insinuated that some days are worse than the others and that discrimination often comes from other males. “My parents were very supportive although it was not easy as I’m from Limpopo, Polokwane and not being straight isnotanorm,thisstartedatage16.
Now I thought that since we’re all grownups here in Varsity, everyone understands everything about sexuality and things will go smooth” he said. It’s a deeply personal choice how much to share about one’s gender identity and sexual orientation at school. LGBTQ students may struggle to have fun as other students, find the right sports and not to mention the impact social media has on young people, they oftenfeelunacceptedbythemedia it makes it difficult for them to accept themselves. Making jokes of these people is affecting them badly in manyways and their selfesteem is also affected.
Peace therefore added he is extraordinarilystrongatthispoint, and he made peace that he will be judged his entire life.
He further mentioned “but I am thankful for the LGBTQIA campaigns because I get to meet peoplethat aredifferent, like me. I get nasty comments all the time andsadly, it istiringto fight allthe time. My love life is even messier because there are lots of men who portray themselves as straight but hook up with me, they’re afraid to be judged and humiliated. I often usedatingappsbecausepeopleare honest withtheirsexualitythere. It is better some days because my friends here in varsity are very supportive and they make me feel like one of them. I have more female friend’s more than male friends”.
In addition, it is significant for LGBTQ students to find the right support, this includes having supportive friends, mentors, parents, and the list goes on. This will therefore prevent the chances ofsuicide, depression, andanxiety. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity without feeling discriminated.

SAUDI PRO LEAGUE WINNING THE TRANSFER WINDOW?
The transfer deadline showed the power of the Premier League clubs, but also the emerging danger of the Saudi
League
By Rethabile Molehe
The transfer window closed on the 1st of September, with teams boasting their squad for the big season ahead. Premier League teams once again showed their dominance when it comes to finance, with 7 of their clubs featuring onthe list oftop 10spenders, during thetransfer window as published by Football 365. Chelsea werethebiggest spendersinthewholeofEurope as they spent approximately around €464.1m (R9.42B)
With almost a quarter going to the tranfer window record signing Ecuadorian Moises Caicedo,whowasboughtforaround$115m.The blues have spent more than $1billion since the change of ownership. In total the Premier League clubs were responsible for 48% of fees inthe whole ofEurope $2.97bn
However it’s the emergence of the Saudi Pro League that will frighten the European top tier clubs. Since the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo who joined Al Nassr in January 2023, the big names have followed ever since. The likes of Jordan Henderson the England captain, the current Ballon d'Or holder Karim Benzema and the BrazilianNeymar Jr have all takenthe Saudi route.
It’s fair to saythat the only reason these players are going to Saudi is because of the wages they offer.
It’s fair to saythat the only reason these players are going to Saudi is because of the wages they offer.
Ronaldo who was given the biggest contract in the history of football earns around $4,1m a week, that’s around R76.5 milliona week Liverpool’s Mo Salah has been one of the rumoured players to be leaving for Saudi. A transfer feeofaround$150mwasrejectedbythe reds. With the Saudi transfer window closing a fewdaysafterEuropeantransferwindow, they’ll be some anxietyaround the Europeanclubs. TheSauditeams haveoutspendalltheEuropean leagues £727m, only behind the Premier league While Europe is more competitive, Saudi is definitely more lucrative. Which makes sense why more and more players choose to go to the moneyedSaudiProLeague, comparedtoEurope topclubs.

Temba Bavuma’s manhad to show some mental strengthanddeterminationthroughouttheseries, after going down 2-0 in the first two matches. The man in green bounced back, winning 3 matches on the trot, as both teams now set their eyes onthe world title.

In came Aiden Makram, who fell just 7 runs short (93) of a 3rd ODI century. The 28-year-old who won the player of the series, has been on form in the last 18 months in the white ball format.

The young all-rounder Jansen, as with the bat, did it with the ball, as he notched his best bowling figures in ODI cricket 5-39, And was therefore handed his first man of the match in Proteas colour. With SAwinning by a huge 122 runs,theAussieswerebundledoutforalow193. “The confidence that we have gained fromthis
series, is something which we can't lose. I was talking to the bowlers, and they said it was the best kind of preparation that we can have, bowling in pressure situations. We're in the best space we could possibly be in. Players don't see it getting any tougher than it did. For me, it's every single individual having the belief and knowing they can make the play for the team.” said Bavuma after the match

BOKS OFFTO FRANCE!
The world champions are out to defend their world title in France.
By Rethabile Molehe
One may quickly forget that it almost became SouthAfrica 2023 rather than France 2023. South Africa narrowly lost to France during the bidding process for the Rugby World Cup 2023 Expectations will be high for Jacques Nienaber’s men who go into the tournament not long after handing the mighty All-Blacks their heaviest defeat in history, during a World Cup warm-up match, in England
They will enter the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the prestige Web Ellis trophy and will be setting their sight on becoming the first nation to win 4 world cup titles, (currently tied with New Zealand on three). Injuries have been the Boks biggest issue during
their preparation.WithWorldCup winners, flyhalf Handre Pollard, outside-centre Lukhanyo Am and lock Lood deJager all injured. However, they’ll be more optimism after their performance against the Kiwis, more especially from winger Canan Moodie. The 20 year old from Paarl who played outside centre for the first time in his professional career, seemed not bothered at all against a formidable All-Blacks team. While the Stormsers flyhalf Mannie Libbok answered his critics with a 100% goal post kicking accuracy. The URC top scorer for the past two seasons in a row has been under scrutiny with his kicking game under the green and gold shirt. That being said, there has been some numerus rumours regarding the return of PollardandAmbackintotheBoks camp. Nothing concrete as yet, withbothplayers being put
on standby along with seven other players.
The Boks will be waryof the no.1 ranked Nation, Ireland who are part of their group along with Romania, Scotland, and Tonga The tournament will kick off on September the 8th as the host take on New Zealand at the capital Stade de France.
While Siya Kolisi’s man will start their campaign against a stubborn Scotlandside, who’llbelookingto
cause an upset on one of the pretournament favourites. The game will be played on 10 September at StadeVeldrome.
Namibia is the only other African team in the tournament, although they are yet to win a world cup match, they’ll go up against the Italians onthe 9th The tournament promises to be a great spectacle in France, and maybe after all, it will betheSpringboks year anddefend their tittle.
