Case Study National Aquatics Centre

National Aquatic Centre, Sports Ireland Campus Dublin, Ireland. NHE 1020 ER HPR Solar Control & UV Reductions

The existing facade of the Aquazone was creating too much heat and glare for the lifeguards watching the water. Keeping their position was made difficult by constant heat caused by having their backs to the glass, and the glare from the sun hitting the water made it difficult to see certain areas of the pool.

Building Location Window Film Used Situation Solution

The Llumar NHE1020 ER HPR, External Solar Control Coating was installed to the full facade. The installation was completed using Mobile Elevated Work Platforms. Its neutral dark finish blended in with the building’s structure and created a uniform look from the exterior, whilst its soft shade internally defused the light.

Result

With most swimming pools the internal climate, coupled with the use of chemicals to keep the area clean and hygienic, dictates the external application. We selected Llumar NHE1020 externally-fitted coating to solve the issues of excessive solar heat gain and remove 99% of damaging UV rays. Not only did this make the space comfortable and safe for staff and the patrons, it is also accompanied by a 10-year guarantee.

Building Location Window Film Used

Blanchardstown Shopping Centre Dublin, Ireland. NHE 1035 ER HPR. Solar Control & Energy Savings

Situation

The existing roof light system of the shopping centre was creating too much heat and glare for the shop owners and for customers walking around.

Solution

Engineers from a well-known building professional services firm tested four different Llumar window films for heat gain and glare. Their final choice was NHE 1035, which is usually recommended where an exterior application is required to provide excellent heat and glare reduction, with a unique combination of moderate reflectance and neutral daylight colour balance.

Result

This film was able to minimize heat and glare and block damaging UV rays by more than 99%, without reducing the natural light coming into the building. The overall comfort in the shopping centre was improved, thus creating a more pleasant work and recreational environment.

A wonderful material, but with an Achilles heel

In recent years there have been a number of reports in the media about so-called “glass cancer” and “spontaneous glass fracture”, with stories of “glass raining down from high-rise buildings.” These refer to incidents where toughened glass windows shatter without warning. Such failures are due to the presence of nickel sulphide in the glass. This flaw can only be diagnosed after the shattering; but the worst effects can be prevented by the application of an appropriate protective window film.
