Hello Alumni friends and Happy Spring! It’s such a special time of the year with the return of green grass and trees and of course, all the beautiful blooming flowers.
Your Alumni Board of Directors is busy planning the 2023 Reunion Banquet, which is set for August 26, 2023. We are so very happy that we can return to our UPH - Methodist campus for the celebration! In this issue, you will find the details for the Reunion and the Registration form that you can complete and send to our Treasurer, Chris Parker.
We are looking forward to celebrating the 50 year Class of 1973. The 50 year class has a committee that is busy working on the completion of their 50 year Class book. It has been a long time tradition for each class to gather information on each classmate and provide a page or two of info and pictures about each nurse and his or her career. So much fun to see what our fellow nurses have accomplished in their 50 years as an IMSN graduate. Class of 1973, if you have not submitted your information to the Class Book Committee at this time, please do so at your earliest convenience. This accumulation of Class information is a wonderful keep-sake for each class
member. Don’t miss out!
As in the past 3 years, Becky McKay has arranged another offering of IMSN Logo clothing and other useful articles through the online store. We are excited about new shirt and sweater designs as well as the offer of tote bags and other useful items. Please see the article within this issue for a link to the online store, which will be open mid June through mid July. There will also be an opening announcement on our Facebook page. I am sure you will be pleased with this new offering. Remember, this has been a great fundraiser for the Alumni Association. Funds are used to defray costs of the Banquet and day to day expenses of the Association. Thank you all for your support in this effort to support your Alumni and to demonstrate pride in our Alma Mater!
Our new display cases for our IMSN history artifacts have arrived! Please see Janice McCullough’ article in this issue. A big THANK YOU to those that have contributed toward this worthwhile project. The total cost was almost $5000 and so far, we have received over $1000 in donations. We invite you to join with us and make a gift to help us honor our history and keep the legacy of the IMSN School of

It is Spring – finally – and as we feel relieved to leave winter behind – we consider new beginnings. In this article I will outline a “new beginning” we are embarking on this year at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines.
A recent study from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing reports that in the last two years, 100,000 nurses across the United States have left the workforce. In addition, 20% of the nurses in the study reported an intent to leave the workforce by 2027. These are sobering facts that leaves us with three questions: How will we care for patients? How do we attract individuals to nursing and other healthcare careers? How do we retain the nurses we have?
The ability to care for patients is top priority! Last summer, a group of nurses across the UnityPoint Health enterprise began work to design a new care delivery model. As we anticipate smaller numbers of Registered Nurses in the coming years, it is imperative to think differently about how we care for patients. The new care delivery model, called t he Collaborative Care Model (CCM), will incorporate additional roles like Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Medical Assistants, along with Patient Care Techs. These roles will comprise a collaborative care group that will provide care to a group of patients. There will be additional support provided to these Collaborative Care groups in the way of a virtual nurse and a Lead RN. The main advantages to the CCM as compared to our current model of primary nursing are :
• a team approach to caring for a group of patients
• increased ability for nurses to work top of license
• added support for a growing number of novices
• a built-in career path for team members
• decreased cost of care
In February we launched the CCM on Younker 7, a medical unit at IMMC. We added a second unit in late March and plan to add two additional units in June. So far, there have been both wins and challenges with the launch. As you might expect, it is a substantial change for our team members, and it sometimes takes increased energy to think about doing work differently. We have a team of leaders and educators who are providing support to the team through frequent debriefing sessions and meetings to problem solve challenges and provide continual encouragement.
Some initial positive outcomes related to the CCM include uninterrupted med passes, less chaotic shift change with better call light coverage, a Lead nurse with no patients is a satisfier, staff report being able to find someone to help them when they need it, decreased number of call lights, and various process improvement initiatives to make the work easier, for example, standard med administration times. Pictured here is a few of the team members from Younker 7, our pioneers in care delivery innovation!
As we continue our journey with this new care model – I ask that you send positive thoughts to our nursing teams who are changing the way of care delivery for the future. Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Denise Cundy, BSN, MS, RN, NE-BC Chief Nurse Executive

IMSN DISPLAY CASE UPDATE
The new display cabinets have arrived!
We were so excited to see our new display cabinets arrive on April 24th. They were not due to be delivered until early May. They are now in the Health Science Library on the ground floor at Iowa Methodist Education and Research. They are lighted cabinets with locks. The items to be displayed are still being outlined but our uniform mannequins are the first to go in once refinishing is complete. Another item will be one of our full-size uniforms with a navy blue IMH cape and hat.
Moving the cabinets from the IMMC dock area took some work. The amount of glass in each cabinet required extra precautions along with doorway width limitations, our hospital movers were unable to assist with the move. The board approved hiring Two Men and A Truck to accomplish the move. If you need moving assistance, I highly recommend this company. Their exemplar teamwork and precision got our prized possessions to their new home in perfect condition!
Suggestions for other items are welcome as we will have two cases to fill. Email me with ideas at Janice McCullough@unitypoint.org. Target completion will be by our annual August 2023 reunion.
Cut form out.

UNITYPOINT HEALTH – DES MOINES Nurse Residency Program
HISTORY
UnityPoint Health Des Moines began their Nurse Residency Program in 2010. This started as a pilot program to improve the transition of new nurses into the field, along with retention within the organization. Over the past 13 years, the program has expanded across ten clinical specialty areas and has impacted over 500 new nurses. The clinical specialty areas include the Emergency Department, Adult Critical Care, Surgical Services, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, Behavioral Health, Acute Rehab, Pediatrics, NICU, and Maternity. Over the last year, the Nurse Residency Program has made significant changes to programming, structure, and the hiring process in response to key stakeholders including future, current, and past residents, leaders, and educators. These changes will continue to occur over the next year to align with the system’s strategic plan and to meet the needs of the stakeholders. In 2019 and 2022, the UnityPoint Heath Des Moines Nurse Residency Program received accreditation with distinction from the ANCC’s Practice Transitions Accreditation Program (PTAP). This high designation has only been awarded to two Nurse Residency Programs in Iowa: both are UnityPoint Health programs.
PROGRAMMING
The programming consists of reviewing and applying global nursing concepts to the resident’s patient population for the first 6 months of the program. Some topics covered include delegation, professionalism, critical thinking, prioritization, conflict resolution and communication, individualizing patient care, healthcare finances, and evidenced-based practice and quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care. Programming also includes personal wellbeing, resiliency training, and self-care strategies. During the second six months, they work on practice initiative projects to improve patient outcomes on their floor. The Nurse Residency Leadership Team evaluates the program content and evaluations to ensure topics are relevant and delivery methods are conducive to the residents’ learning. There is also clinical specialty area specific education that occurs to cover skills and information related to their specific patient population. This content is taught by the Clinical Education Specialist for that population. The residents share their practice initiative projects at graduation.
WINS
The Nurse Residency Program has many accomplishments over the past decade. Most recently, the accomplishments have been receiving accreditation with distinction despite the challenges of COVID, recruiting nurses from across the United States, and dissemination of practice initiative projects via poster presentation at conferences. Some of the conferences included the UnityPoint Regional Evidence-Based Practice Symposium, Iowa Organization for Nursing Leadership (IONL), and the National Evidence-Based Practice Conference. The Nurse Residency Leadership Team will be presenting two posters at the ANCC Transition to Practice Symposium in May. In addition, over the past year, there has been a significant increase in applicants and nurse residents starting in the program. In 2022, there was a 30% increase in the number of nurse residents compared to 2021. The program is on trajectory to exceed this increase in 2023. In 2022, we started a new recognition program for our preceptors. The nurse residents nominate their preceptor and explain how their preceptor positively impacted their orientation. A committee reviews the nominations and chooses a winner. The winner is presented with the award and their nomination is read by the nurse resident. We had 3 winners who precepted residents in the 2022 cohorts. The Nurse Residency Leadership Team looks forward to more wins in the future and being able to continue to support the nurse residents in their transition to practice.

How many times have we talked about how lucky we were to have the clinical education at IMSN which placed us ahead of other new nursing graduates? Well, see what UPH - Des Moines is doing to assist newly graduate nurses to adjust to clinical nursing autonomy — see the article about the Nurse Residency Program.
We look forward to seeing you in August for our Annual Reunion. It’s a great way to re-connect with colleagues and revisit the institution where we learned the art of nursing.
Have a great summer,
