Page 1

UP date

Over the past twelve months, the ELC has blossomed into a nurturing and vibrant space where little ones take their first steps in education, form lasting friendships, and build the foundations for lifelong learning.

"It has been a rich and rewarding time, and I am sincerely grateful for the shared commitment...
Your parternership in your child's education is a vital part of what makes Unity College such a special place."

Principal's Word

As we complete Term 2, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the many meaningful events and achievements across our College this term. It has been a rich and rewarding time, and I am sincerely grateful for the shared commitment between our staff, students, and you - our valued parents and caregivers. Your partnership in your child’s education is a vital part of what makes Unity College such a special place.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day: We welcomed over 400 grandparents and special friends to Unity for a truly heart-warming celebration. As a grandparent myself, it was deeply moving to witness the love and pride shared between our students and their families. Our guests toured classrooms, engaged in student learning, and enjoyed a delightful morning tea. The day reminded us of the irreplaceable role grandparents play in nurturing faith, wisdom, and

connection across generations. Thank you for your kind feedback and presence on this special day.

Little Scholars: Our Little Scholars transition days have been a joyful experience as we prepare to welcome these young learners officially in Term 3. Led by Chloe Hill, the program is off to a strong start, and we are confident it will provide a nurturing and engaging foundation for the educational journey ahead.

Flat Netball: We concluded the term with our much-loved Staff vs Students Netball Match. This friendly competition brings fun, laughter, and school spirit to the end of term. This year, after three bouts of extra time, the students took the win 2523!

Professional Development –Investing in Our Team: During Week 10 (30 June–4 July), our staff were engaged in a week of purposeful and reflective professional development. We were proud to host the AISSA Southern Regional

Conference, with the theme: “Strength in Self-Care: Empowering Staff in Regional Schools.” Keynote speaker, Madhavi Nawana Parker, explored the neuroscience of wellbeing and practical strategies for staff to sustain joy and resilience in their work. Additional sessions included:

+ Trauma-informed practice

+ Curriculum development

+ Equip and Connect training

+ A spiritually enriching day at Encounter College in Victor Harbor.

This week is more than training - it is an investment in the strength and wellbeing of our staff, which ultimately benefits every student in our care.

Chicago: Teen Edition: Mark your calendars for Week 2, Term 3, when our students will perform Chicago: Teen Edition. After months of dedication and rehearsals, this production – led by Mr Benjamin Gallasch and Mrs Amy Daniell –promises to be an exceptional display of singing, dancing, and acting. Tickets are now available, and we encourage you to book early to avoid missing out on what will be a memorable event!

With Heartfelt Thanks: To all our students – well done for your efforts this term. As you head into the holidays, I hope you enjoy time to rest, recharge, and be with loved ones. For our Year 12s, the final

stretch is upon you. Stay focused, reach out for support when needed, and keep striving. And to every student, I encourage you to pick up a book over the break – read for learning, yes, but also for joy.

To our Unity staff – thank you. Your tireless work, compassion, and professionalism make Unity a place of learning, belonging, and growth. Your contribution to our shared mission does not go unnoticed.

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9

To our parents and caregivers – thank you for your trust, encouragement, and continued support. You are vital to our community and our students’ success, and we are grateful for the role you play every day.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for a vibrant and enriching Term 3. May this holiday period be one of rest, connection, and renewal for all.

2025 Staycation

Smelly swags filled both the Stadium Gallery and Discovery Centre as the Year 12s slept over at school for their final school camp –a.k.a. Staycation. Students listened to their PC Teachers and Mr Yeager present sessions preparing them for their ‘transition’ to life beyond Unity College. A highlight was the Talent Night with the audience being treated to performances by JoJo Siwa, Steve Harley, and renditions of songs; Apocalypse, Rocky Mountain High and Wagon Wheel. It also included a highly creative lyrical Rap Battle and exceptionally choreographed dance routine, along with cameo appearances by P.T. Barnum (The Greatest Showman), Carrie Underwood, Tina Turner, Miley Cyrus and The Beastie Boys. After not much sleep and a delicious bacon and egg brekkie, the group enjoyed spending time making a ‘Prayer sandwich’ and reading with their Reception buddies. Wednesday afternoon’s DREAM Reflection session was redirected after the large amount of rain experienced in the Murraylands, however the group embraced the weather and trekked through slodgy, slippery mud around the Sturt Reserve wetland.

What will I be when I grow up?

Senior School students had the opportunity to attend Adelaide’s biggest Career Expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds in May. With over 200 employers and training organisations exhibiting, students were able to gain free career advice, discover future pathways and careers, experience ‘Try a Trade’ interactive zones, discover Defence & Space industry jobs, and much more.

Senior School

Middle School

Tech 4 Sustainability Conference

INNOVATION, LEADERSHIP, REAL-WORLD

IMPACT

Unity College co-hosted the inaugural Tech4Sustainability conference with Hills Christian School in Verdun. The Middle School ETHOS (Extending Thinking and Higher Order Skills) Team facilitated workshops with like-minded representatives from 12 invited schools and colleges from across the state to teach them about drones in industry and future career opportunities. Simulations included drone use in the military, search and rescue scenarios, videography for television and application in farming and agriculture. Students were enriched as participants where other Colleges shared their expertise with podcasting, permaculture and Virtual Reality devices. Student voice, agency and ownership to be an inquiring learner was nurtured throughout the workshops. Our students had the opportunity to work alongside Digital Technology experts from across the country in multiple fields like AI design, Geospatial mapping, Ecologist and Robotic Engineers. We look forward to our ETHOS Team sharing their collective learnings with our community and raising up more digital leaders within our college.

Periods, Pain and Endometriosis

Program

Year 9 students loved Sarah’s (PPEP presenter) wisdom, wit, and nononsense approach about how to manage period or pelvic pain and how to seek out help if needed. They left the sessions with a better understanding of their bodies and greater empathy for others.

Scan the QR code for more photos of the Year 5 and Year 3 Camps.

Learning Through Experience

Year 5 students immersed themselves in 19th century life at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat complete with gold panning, historical roleplay, and an unforgettable evening at the Aura Light Show

Meanwhile, the Year 3 Camp at Aldinga aligned with Aboriginal Studies and provided students with an authentic cultural learning experience grounded in Kaurna knowledge and traditions. Highlights included:

+ “The rainy bushwalk and I mean it was really raining – we were all drenched in water.” Emma

+ “The treasure hunt.” Lachlan

+ “The bushwalk because we learnt about a Lego tree. It is called that because when you grab one of its sticks and pull it apart you can put it back together like Lego.”

Lorenzo

+ “Cooking fish.” Samuel

These camps offer our students not just educational value, but lasting memories and deeper understanding.

Junior School

Teddy Bear Clinic

The Receptions were busy making sure their favourite teddies are in the best of health, with an annual check-up provided by the Bridge Clinic GP’s as part of the RACE Program. Their owners made sure they weren’t scared at all about visiting the doctor - everyone was very brave. Thanks to the wonderful GP’s for their care of these beloved cuddle toys and their owners.

Way2Go Bike Ed

Year 4 and 5 students have been learning road safety on their bikes. You may have seen them zipping around the streets in their bright yellow vests, obeying road rules and working together for a safe, joyful experience.

Sharing the Planet

MONARTO SAFARI PARK EXCURSION

This term the Year 1s have been exploring the central idea: Living things depend on their habitats as part of their Sharing the Planet unit. Their visit to Monarto Safari Park helped bring this learning to life!

They explored the park and learnt all about different animal habitats and the unique features that help animals survive and thrive in their environments. They saw a variety of animals, including lions, giraffes, rhinos, and meerkats with each animal living in a specific habitat

that suits its needs. Some prefer grasslands, while others need dense shrubs or open savannahs. They discovered how their behaviours, bodies, and diets are all adapted to their environments.

A highlight was seeing the animals up close and learning from the keepers about how Monarto helps protect endangered species and supports conservation around the world.

Students had an amazing time and came back with a deeper understanding of how important it is to share the planet with other living things and care for the habitats they call home.

A is for Apple...

Jolly Phonics Dress Up Day – a highlight on the Reception calendar – was full of colour, imagination and phonics goodness with the students (and their dedicated families) up to the challenge. We had elves and princesses, superheroes and butterflies. Congratulations everyone... you looked fantastic!

National Simultaneous Storytime

Each year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author/illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, childcare centres, bookshops and many other places around the country. 2025 was the 25th year of the NSS which aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. This year’s book was ‘The Truck Cat’ written by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell.

Junior School classes tuned in on the 21 May at 12 noon to hear Deborah read her delightful book, a story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found. The reading was followed by Danny Snell conducting an interactive drawing sessions with students. There were over 2 million students listening in at the same time all over Australia! The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all Junior School participants.

Learn

Japanese Movie Making

Year 10 Japanese students visited St John’s Grammar in Belair to participate in the Japanese Movie Making Day held by the Japanese Language Teacher’s Association of SA. Our students worked in groups with students from Immanuel College and St John’s Grammar, competing against students from Brighton High School, St Francis De Sales, Cabra Dominican and Aberfoyle Park High School. Their challenge was to plan a commercial selling a Japanese product and we were lucky to be part of the winning team – for the second year in a row! Students created light-hearted and fun commercials based on KitKats, Studio Ghibli films and Kendama. As well as being treated to a Sushi lunch! We look forward to this event each year and thank the JLTASA for running the competition.

Kayaking in the Riverland

After weeks of mapping the route, working out needed supplies and planning overnight camping points the Year 11 Stage 2 Outdoor Education students navigated a self-reliant kayaking expedition in the Riverland. Unity’s Outdoor Education opportunities are gaining prominence and popularity, pushing students out of their comfort zone and into a world of self-reliance and leadership.

Lockdown

The Year 10 Drama class worked on their production of Lockdown by Dennis Craven throughout the semester – stretching themselves as artists, collaborators and creators by not only taking on acting roles but embracing all elements of direction, set and lighting design, producing and marketing. ‘Lockdown’ is a one act play that explores how a group of high school students react during a sudden school lockdown. Through suspense and reflection, the play encourages students to consider the theme of fear, responsibility and how we respond in crisis situations.

Reconciliation Week

A TIME TO REFLECT AND HONOUR

Reconciliation Week began with our Sorry Day commemoration, thoughtfully coordinated by Mrs Sharon Gierus. Our Ngarrindjeri students and Student Leaders opened the event with a moving flag-raising ceremony, followed by an inspiring assembly featuring a recorded interview with Aboriginal teacher and artist Lucy Tanami (LT) LT shared her powerful story of connection, culture, and resilience.

In the Junior School, Shirley Hartman led beautiful sessions on Ngarrindjeri language, music, and stories. Students participated in symbolic activities, including ribbon decorating and footprint storytelling.

We remain deeply committed to honouring and celebrating the cultures and languages of all our students and families.

Care

Cross Generational Learning

Year 3 students visited the Lutheran Homes residents and shared some songs and work with them. Students shared their recent work from their Christian Studies unit of work on the Garden of Eden and The Ten Commandments, which was of great interest to the Lutheran Home Buddies and generated rich discussion.

Excursions like this provide students with the opportunity for making meaningful and authentic cross generational connections and teaching of the value of sharing knowledge and working together. They are also a valuable opportunity for our students to take part in active service in our community, by giving time to spend with others

to learn together, to respect the knowledge of others, to provide a younger perspective, and to support the residents with their social activities.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Unity College celebrated our wonderful Mums, Grandmothers, Aunties and Special Friends with a Junior School breakfast in the Courtyard while our ELC mums received a brekky goodie-bag-to-go so we could show them how much we appreciate everything they do for our school and students.

Thank You!

2025 COSTA GROUP GRANT

Unity College Junior School is one of 30 schools and early childhood services in Australia to receive sponsorship and support through a three-year partnership between the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program and Costa Group, the owners of Costa Adelaide Mushrooms at Monarto. The program will provide hands-on learning experiences for students to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh seasonal food as well as develop practical cooking skills and nutrition knowledge through a twoyear membership to the Kitchen Garden Program, as well as a grant of $1500 to build raised garden beds.

RECYCLING GRANT

Through the generous support of $2,500 from the Rural City of Murray Bridge Community Grants Program, the Junior School was able to install a recycling table. Recycling and waste education gives students hands on experience with cleaning and sorting drink cans for recycling, improving their knowledge and practical experience of recycling at school, with a flow-on effect of environmental awareness at home and in the wider community.

We thank both the Costa Group and Rural City of Murray Bridge for their support of our school through the provision of these resources.

Alongside these practical skills, they’ve also been learning about the origins of the animals and the proper techniques for preparing them for competition.

Other exciting developments in Unity Agriculture include:

Engage

ELC Update

This June, we proudly celebrated a major milestone — our Early Learning Centre’s first birthday! It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we opened our doors and welcomed our very first families into our ELC community.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen our centre come to life — from building strong routines and forming meaningful relationships, to creating a learning environment that reflects the wonder, curiosity, and joy of early childhood.

We’ve accomplished so much together in our first year, and we wanted to take a moment to reflect and celebrate just some of the highlights:

+ Our first ELC Sports Day, where the children showed their team spirit and had a blast participating in fun physical challenges.

+ A magical visit to Hahndorf Farm Barn, giving children hands-on experiences with animals and farm life.

+ A fun-filled Bike Day, promoting gross motor skills, confidence, and lots of excitement!

+ Heartwarming celebrations for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, where we honoured the special people in our children’s lives.

+ A joyful celebration of our very first Christmas together as a centre community.

+ Professional photographs capturing the personalities and growth of our little learners.

+ And perhaps most significantly, we’ve proudly watched some of our children begin their transition to school, ready for their next big adventure.

Inspire

Beyond these events, we have also:

+ Established our centre philosophy, which reflects our shared values and commitment to high-quality early learning.

+ Built a passionate, caring team of educators who bring warmth, dedication and expertise to their work every day.

+ Created indoor and outdoor learning environments that inspire exploration, discovery and play.

To mark our birthday, we celebrated with a coffee van, hot chocolates for the children, and cupcakes for morning tea. It was a lovely moment to pause and reflect on everything we’ve achieved together — and to thank you, our families, for your ongoing support, trust and involvement.

As we step into our second year, we’re excited to continue building on this strong foundation and look forward to more memories, milestones and magical moments with your children.

Careers Focus

Our Senior School Career Focus Day was a great opportunity for students to speak to experts from industry and higher education, to find out more about the pathway/industry that's right for them.

Mini Exhibition

Year 5 students presented their Mini Exhibition to family and friends where they completed research, wrote a persuasive and created a well marketed display to showcase their learning of ther chosen topic. Great preparation for the PYPx at the end of the year.

Concordia Kindy Term 2 in Action

We focused on the concept of ‘God created me’, promoting this through our devotions, prayers and stories with the children. In one of our group times, we asked the children to share what makes them special and we displayed their responses at the entrance to Kindy on love hearts.

We acknowledged Reconciliation Week by exploring Australia, its first people, Australian animals and how we can care for country. A special ‘care for country’ table was set up for children to explore this concept further and learn about the Ngarrindjeri names for the Australian animals.

Our literacy focus was I understand the language of my world. We promoted this through exploring letters and sounds. Children had to find objects in a sensory tray with a specific letter, they also made ‘alphabet stew’ and copied pet labels to make words with the magnetic letters. Our numeracy focus was I explore and understand my place and space in the world. We explored this through patterning, shapes and tessellation.

Our dramatic play area transformed into a Pizzeria. The children loved their time playing the chef, waiters or taking orders on the phone. A great opportunity for children to socially interact and develop social skills like turn taking, sharing and also respect for their Kindy space by cleaning up their mess.

Animals Anonymous visited and the children were fascinated with all the Australian Animals that they got to meet and learn about. They had many exciting questions for the keepers and got to pat the animals, fur, scales and tails.

We celebrated the mums in our lives by inviting families to come along to our annual Mums Night. The children got to pamper their mummy’s and show them just how much we appreciate all they do.

The children have had a wonderful time this term playing and learning outside. One sunny afternoon the children even painted with mud. Mud is a fun and exciting tool at Kindy that we use in many different ways. Mud even boosts our immunity!

The children participated in an ‘Obstacle a thon’. This was an event to promote children’s big body movements and fundraise for the Kindy within the community. With the donations, the Kindy has purchased new bean bags and bamboo channels and will be purchasing more outdoor resources. It was fantastic to see the children’s efforts and perseverance… they all did ten laps!

Concordia Kindy

At the end of this term, we farewelled some of our Kindy children as they graduated in readiness for school. We celebrated them with a Graduation Service held at Holy Cross where they received their certificate and candle.
