United We Fight Against Opioid and Drug Addiction

Watch our new video-Know the Truth About Drug Addiction United Way of Greater Kingsport again welcomed Wayne Campbell with Tyler's Light in March to host a public forum for parents, teachers, and community members and to conduct student presentations around drug abuse and misuse. Campbell also helped lead a compelling discussion at UWGK's annual Board Dinner.

Tyler's Light reaches teenagers effectively by putting a face, name and story to some of the opioid's victims.The mission of Tyler's Light is to equip our communities and our nation with information and resources to help people choose a drug-free life, while providing resources for family members and/or friends who are involved in the battle against addiction.

In Tennessee, 19% of teenagers said they had taken prescription drugs without medical authorization (CDC). United Way of Greater Kingsport fights against the opioid epidemic through education, prevention, and intervention.

Stay Connected!

"Humbled and amazed" is how I would describe my emotions this past month after experiencing the incredible journey around our community through the process we call "Citizen's Review." We were humbled after hearing stories of individual lives that have been transformed and amazed at the powerful work being done through the many programs of our United Way member agencies: A man at Hope Haven shared how his life was changed after many years of drug abuse; he now serves on their board and gives back to others in need. An articulate young father at Family Promise described how this organization had helped him through a time of difficulty.

Young women at Link House graduated high school last year thanks to the flexibility and individualization of DB Excel! Two adults at Frontier Industries spoke with pride about the work readiness skills they were obtaining and the volunteer work they complete in the community. A high school student at Girls Inc., is now both a member and a staff member, using her time and leadership skills to reach out to the younger girls.

The overall theme that lingered for me?

Many people who have been helped at a critical point in their lives later feel great joy in volunteering to help another.
