Last year 124,000 individuals* in east central Iowa used services funded by United Way. Seven percent of new jobs by 2014 likely will go unfilled because of an undertrained workforce. Employers project that 74 percent of new jobs will require an education beyond a high school diploma. 2
• We’ve seen a drop in children’s reading skills. Last year, 10 percent fewer fourth graders could read at grade level than the year before.3 Help us bridge the gap. A good education is the foundation for a child’s success in work and in life. United Way funds partner agencies that provide childcare, parent education and quality improvement services focused on families with children under five. We also support agencies that focus on older children’s needs, including youth engagement, social-emotional skills and academic growth.

Our breakthrough strategies Read Every Day (RED) Ahead provides educational materials, books and resources to economically disadvantaged families with children 0-5. Youth Achievement Corps, places AmeriCorps volunteers in area schools to support youth in academic and social skills. Play and Learn is a drop-in playgroup that offers developmental activities for children under five, as well as parent and caregiver education.

What your dollar buys $1 a week: Funds two hours of legal representation for a child. $5 a week: Provides developmental screenings for 13 groups of children.

1,949 parents received parent education and skill development classes. 1,438 youth participated in quality out-of-school-time programming 992 youth were paired with a caring mentor to provide stability and academic support.

34,787 rides were provided to individuals in order to access education, employment or community services. 4,077 free tax returns were completed, returning $6.9 million to low-income households in our community. 2.3 million pounds of food were distributed through 102 partners.

It’s 6 a.m., and working families take advantage of early drop-off for quality child care. At 9 a.m., a free medical clinic provides prescription assistance to low-income, uninsured women. It’s 11 a.m., and hundreds of seniors receive their main nutritious meal of the day from home-delivered meals. At 3 p.m., children arrive at an after-school program for homework assistance and skill-building opportunities that enhance the learning they received at school. It’s 7 p.m., and Scouts gather for activities that will build positive self-esteem and offer a foundation for success in their lives. At 10 p.m., low-income second-shift workers receive an affordable ride home. It’s 1 a.m., as a parent calls a local toll-free emergency number to get immediate crisis counseling to help with a stressful family situation. At 3 a.m., an exhausted teenage mother calls 2-1-1 to ask where to turn for parenting advice, including help with getting her baby to sleep.

United Way holds two events each year, Day of Caring and Day of Service, and invites business groups to participate. United Way can also help your business coordinate any volunteer activity any time of the year.
