WHO WE ARE United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) is the second largest United Way in Iowa and was one of the first in America. Established in 1914, UWECI originally served four area nonprofits; that number has grown to more than 30 today. Together with our local partners, we serve Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones, and Linn counties to help meet our communities’ most critical needs.
OUR FOCUS United Way advances the common good by creating opportunities for all. We focus on education, financial stability, and health because they are the essential building blocks for a good quality of life. Our goal is to raise awareness surrounding key issues, provide services to those most in need, and promote social change that helps strengthen people and our communities.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES Your gift stays local by supporting effective programming at multiple area nonprofits—one of which is Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC). Together, ASAC and United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) have worked for many years to provide help to those who need it. ASAC offers substance abuse counseling services on a variety of levels, as well as residential programs and outpatient services to both youth and adults.
From the Heart ASAC’s Heart of Iowa is a residential program and halfway house for women who have children or are pregnant at the time they come in for treatment. The program serves nearly 150 families in East Central Iowa every year. Wanda Sellers leads the program as its director. Wanda explains, “It’s a scary thing to come into treatment and all of sudden, everything’s changed. And you want your kids to be safe and happy. It’s a pretty big adjustment.” Most women are in the program for 90 days but can choose to stay up to a year. Those in the halfway house program are able to work full-time and live at the facility. This gives them structure and support while they become financially stable and prepare to move out on their own again.
A grant from UWECI’s Women’s Leadership Initiative made it possible for Heart of Iowa to hire a care coordinator this past year. Wanda describes the funding as a godsend. “It was amazing how we could hire someone to take care of all the care coordination, navigate through all the resources, and let the counselors focus much more on substance abuse counseling.” Having started with Heart of Iowa as a counselor, she truly understands how much of a difference United Way makes in the community. “Without United Way and WLI, we couldn’t do the care coordination that we’re doing now. It’s been a wonderful asset to Heart of Iowa, and our clients are getting so much more out of the program.”

Lindsay describes her childhood as relatively normal. She was a very happy child and grew up to be a cheerleader, a high school graduate, and an active member of her community.
Increase children who are developmentally and academically on track by fourth grade by 30%.
Sharing Newfound Hope Lindsay completed the required 90-day program and chose to stay at ASAC Heart of Iowa’s halfway house. She works full-time, attends church and group meetings, and has dance parties with Nevaeh and Ryder in their living room. She is proud of the person and mother she has become. “My motivation is to be healthy, have a happy life with my kids, and give back to others who maybe don’t understand addiction, or who need help. I’d like to be an advocate for them and a voice for the disease of addiction to give hope to others. Because when you’re in the disease of addiction, you feel hopeless, but as long as you’re openminded, you can make it out.”

From there, Lindsay heard about Heart of Iowa from her sister. Within six weeks, she had a place in the program. “It was hard the first couple of weeks. But that time allowed me to adjust to the schedule, routine, and big transition before bringing in my kids.”

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) raided her house and found drug paraphernalia. Lindsay remembers that day in detail. “I didn’t cry because I didn’t like what I was doing. I was putting my kids through such a chaotic life.” A week later, the Department of Human Services removed Lindsay’s six-year-old Nevaeh and three-year-old Ryder from her care after she admitted drug use.

When she started using drugs seven years ago, she didn’t know how much her life would change. “I had no idea I was an addict until I came to ASAC. I thought I could stop any time. I realized it was a problem when I wanted to stop and I couldn’t.”

The Jones County Volunteer Center’s (JCVC) mission is to engage people of all ages in volunteer services that meet critical community needs, impact and benefit citizens of Jones County, and provide volunteers meaningful experiences.
55+ Initiative
United Way’s 55+ Initiative connects volunteers, 55 and better, with impactful and meaningful volunteer positions, allowing them to share their skills and talents with local nonprofits. Through the efforts of more than 450 volunteers, we are able to help make an impact on United Way’s community goals and beyond. 55+ Initiative works with nonprofits, regardless if they receive funding from United Way, to help better our community.

United Way of East Central Iowa named the William B. Quarton Society in honor of Bill Quarton. During his lifetime (1903–2007), he championed Cedar Rapids with his philanthropy. Today, members actively promote volunteerism and encourage families to volunteer together in our community. Each year, Quarton steering committee members select finalists for United Way’s Volunteer Recognition Awards and participate in organizing the Time for Art event.

Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) unites funds and resources to ensure the well-being of women in need. The society works with United Way funded partners to provide prescription assistance, emergency dental care, vision care, medical co-pays, cancer screenings, and diabetic testing supplies to un- and under-insured women. Union members who give $350 or more
The Labor Leadership Giving Society recognizes Union members who demonstrate personal commitment to caring for one another and those most in need. Locally, the Community Services Liaison serves as a contact between Hawkeye Labor Council, AFL–CIO, and United Way of East Central Iowa. The Hawkeye Labor Council has more than 40 affiliated Unions with members who support United Way. Together, local Unions and United Way of East Central Iowa continue to impact the quality of the labor force and working families in our community. UNITED WAY OF EAST CENTRAL IOWA
YOUNG YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY LEADERS
Donors aged 40 or younger who give $250 or more Young Leaders Society (YLS) recognizes individuals and couples 40 years or younger, and offers networking opportunities for new and emerging community leaders. YLS designates 10% of all Community Fund gifts to the Read Every Day to get Ahead (RED Ahead) program, which helps lowincome children develop skills they need to succeed before entering kindergarten. Members also participate and organize several events during the year, such as Time for Art where attendees bid volunteer hours for local artwork.

The Touch Tomorrow Society recognizes donors who have supported the United Way Endowment through outright or estate gifts. These donors strengthen our community, improve lives, and make an everlasting impact.
Whipple Legacy Circle To help address not only today’s needs, but also tomorrow’s challenges, William P. and Gayle S. Whipple Legacy Circle members endow their annual campaign gift to United Way. In 2012, United Way of East Central Iowa created the Whipple Legacy Circle in honor of William P. and Gayle S. Whipple, the first Eastern Iowans to endow an annual gift to United Way.
