Our History

United Way of Central Virginia dates back to 1921 when a group of community leaders established the Lynchburg Community Chest. D.B. Ryland of the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce helped coordinate this effort with Floyd Knight, Richard Hancock, R.A. Owen, R.T. Watts Jr., Giles Miller and M.O. Carruthers. The first community campaign took place in 1922 and raised $85,525.

While the initial years of the Community Chest focused on fundraisers, community planning was soon an important part of our work. In 1949, the Junior League organized and financed a group to study community needs on a year-round basis. Called the Lynchburg Community Council, it represented 76 health and social service organizations. The Council received funding from the Community Chest and then the two organizations merged in 1954 to become the Lynchburg Community Chest and Council.

The organization continued its work in identifying and responding to the needs of the community, but decided to change its name to the United Fund of Lynchburg in 1957. This was the last name to include Lynchburg in its wordings. In 1973, the organization changed its name to United Way of Central Virginia to reflect its work in serving the entire region.

Message from the President & CEO

Dear United Way Friends,

When I had the incredible honor of being named President and CEO of United Way of Central Virginia, I knew it came with a profound responsibility. Over a century of tradition and dedication has made our organization the vibrant force it is today. Volunteers, donors, and staff have tirelessly worked to help thousands of people every year, in both good times and challenging ones. Together, we embody the spirit of change!

But what does it truly mean to BE THE CHANGE? It’s an invitation to join a collective effort to transform our community. It’s more than one person or one organization; it’s about uplifting everyone to enhance the quality of life for those around us. It means showing up for each other when we are needed most. It’s “we” instead of “me.”

United Way is at the forefront, partnering with private and public companies and organizations to tackle the childcare shortage and workforce retention through our groundbreaking Childcare and Workforce Center initiative, set to open in 2025/26.

We are proud of our community-led process that funds 38 vital programs. With millions of dollars reinvested into our region, we are creating lasting change and building a healthier, more vibrant community—together.

I am fortunate to witness the incredible work of our partner agencies daily. Many have adapted their business models in recent years, finding innovative ways to serve clients and maintain critical services. Partners are sharing resources, rallying volunteers, and achieving amazing feats.

The success of United Way lies in the people of our community—our Board of Directors, volunteers, donors, partner agencies, and community stakeholders—all coming together. We thrive when we unite. That is BEING THE CHANGE.

As we move forward, we need your help. If you or your company can become a Keystone Partner, joining our elite group of corporate partners and true stewards of our community, we welcome your support.

United Way of Central Virginia is committed to coordinating the network of partner agencies and services through any challenge. Our Board and staff are dedicated to staying mission focused. We will continue to assist our residents in need. We will continue to BE THE CHANGE.

Sincerely,

Message from the Board Presidents

Patrick Proffitt Patrick Proffitt

2023-2024 Board Chair

Serving as the board chair of United Way of Central Virginia has been an honor. Our campaign theme, “BE THE CHANGE,” reflects our organization’s transformation and commitment to a sustainable future for our non-profit partners.

United Way of Central Virginia is becoming more visible in the community. We’re not just raising funds; we’re building partnerships to create a more significant collective impact, working collaboratively to make a profound difference in our community.

UWCV is responding to community needs and taking action. We’re leading initiatives with stakeholders, organizations, and corporate partners to tackle workforce and childcare challenges, establishing a childcare/ workforce hub. We’ve also launched a non-profit incubator, supported start-up non-profits, and supported a sold-out non-profit summit. Our annual Day of Caring remains one of the largest single-day volunteer events in our region.

We brought the community together with a “splash,” inviting thousands to Downtown Lynchburg for a weekend of fun on a 700-foot waterslide, reconnecting people with our mission.

This past year has been busy and innovative. I’m excited about the future of United Way of Central Virginia. Our positive impact continues to grow across our region. It has been a pleasure serving as the 23/24 chair, and I look forward to seeing the continued service this organization provides.

2024-2025 Board Chair

It is with great pleasure that I am addressing you today as the incoming Chair of United Way of Central Virginia. I recognize it is a major responsibility not to be taken lightly.

I would first like to thank my predecessor, Patrick Proffitt. who took on the Chairmanship in 2023. Patrick’s leadership of Board of Directors has strengthened this organization and we are grateful for his service.

As you read through this report, I hope you are inspired by our United Way effort to support people and organizations who seek to improve life for everyone in Central Virginia.

For the past 103 years, we have witnessed the power of working together. We plan to continually foster meaningful partnerships within our community and with you.

Please know that whether you are a financial giver, volunteer, or advocate, your support truly matters.

There is an exciting and dynamic year ahead for UWCV! I look forward to working with you!

Bright Beginnings: A Childcare and Workforce Initiative

Launched in 2008 by United Way of Central Virginia, Bright Beginnings is dedicated to ensuring that all children are supported from birth as they prepare for kindergarten.

In response to the community’s needs, Bright Beginnings initiated a comprehensive Workforce and Childcare initiative in late 2023. This effort addresses critical challenges in workforce development and the shortage of quality early childcare in the region, which significantly impact parents’ employment and employers’ workforce retention. In collaboration with local and regional stakeholders, the initiative aims to:

• Establish a licensed early childhood care and training center.

• Develop workforce training programs for early childhood care facilities.

• Create a shared services alliance to strengthen existing childcare providers.

• Provide training and certification for private, in-home early childcare providers.

The goal is to open this facility by late 2025 or early 2026 through partnerships with public, corporate, and private entities. For more information, please contact Kim Soerensen at Kim. Soerensen@unitedwaycv.org.

Bright Beginnings also manages Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free childrens books to children from birth through age five who reside in the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford or Campbell.

In addition, to support the workforce initiative, Bright Beginnings will lead the development of an AmeriCorps program in Central Virginia, primarily focusing on supporting the early care and education profession. For more information contact Karen Wesley at Karen.Wesley@unitedwaycv.org.
