The United Way of Central Missouri is a local, accountable, volunteer-driven organization that serves people in need by leading and coordinating efforts to help one another.

VISION STATEMENT The United Way of Central Missouri unites people and resources in the Central Missouri area by educating, motivating, and inspiring the community to facilitate the dignity, self-sufficiency, and well being of all and to promote efforts to maximize their human potential.

ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES

prevention, and stewardship.

• We will provide only those programs and services that are consistent with the mission of the United Way of Central Missouri.

2009 BOARD OF DIRECTORS As my year as Chairman of the United Way of Central Missouri concludes, I want to express my thanks to all of the board members, volunteers, and staff for all of the time and effort dedicated by you in helping those less fortunate in our service area.

I’m constantly amazed at the willingness of our community to go the extra mile to assist those who need our help, whether through financial support or through countless personal hours dedicated to helping those in need. Special thanks go out to our staff--Linda McAnany, Theresa Verslues, Tonya Willig, and Nancy Reeves.

Without the help and guidance of these folks, we wouldn’t be as successful in our efforts.

As you know, we are in the midst of difficult economic times, and the help we are providing through our member agencies cannot be overstated. Due to the hard work of this year’s campaign co-chairs, Mike Kehoe and Warren Krech, we were able to reach our goal of $1.6 Million, and we will be able to provide the assistance so desperately needed by so many. Mike and Warren—thanks so much for your hard work, your leadership, and your community spirit.

Lastly, thanks to all of the businesses and individuals who pledged their hard earned dollars and helped us reach our campaign goal. Your contributions will make a difference in the lives of many.

Our United Way is successful because of all of the good people involved, and it’s been my privilege to serve this past year as Chairman. I look forward to the continued success of the United Way, and I pledge my continued efforts to Live United with you.

2009 GOVERNING BODY The United Way of Central Missouri’s Governing Body serves three important roles. Members of this group elect the United Way Board of Directors and also new members of the Governing Body. Secondly, changes to the United Way of Central Missouri bylaws must be voted on by the Governing Body. Finally, the Governing Body is made up of members of the community who are potential candidates for the Board of Directors.

The Strategic Funding Committee reviews finance committee recommendations, grant criteria, agency classifications, community needs assessment, grant applications and new agency applications. This committee gives instructions to the Fund Allocation Steering Committee.

GRANTS

The United Way of Central Missouri provided $23,700 in emergency grants to partner agencies in 2009.

Salvation Army - $1,200 - To assist in funding transportation to and from the Central Missouri Food Bank warehouse in Columbia.

Dental, Eye, and Shoe program - $5,500 - To meet the increasing needs of the program. This agency

provides dental exams, and emergency dental work, eye exams and eyeglasses and shoe vouchers for children of low-income families.

Homemaker Health Care- $2,000 - To purchase medical equipment for their outreach services. The outreach services include volunteer respite, volunteer transportation, and medical equipment for temporary use.

Outreach services are provided to low income (Medicaid or near Medicaid) and disabled individuals.

Central Missouri Food Bank - $15,000 - To provide funding for the buddy pack program in Moniteau and Osage Counties and to establish a permanent food panty in California, MO. The Central MO Food Bank’s Buddy Pack program provides kid friendly nutritious foods that are sent home in back packs each week so children have food to eat on weekends and during school breaks. Many children on the free and reduced lunch program only receive nutritious meals during the school day and remain hungry on the weekends.

FUND ALLOCATION Fund allocation is the first step in the process of determining the goal for each year’s Community Campaign. Members of the Fund Allocation Committee meet weekly in the Spring. During this time, the volunteers review the member agencies’ funding requests for the upcoming year. The five-panel group takes several matters into consideration, including an agency’s financial standing and the impact of their services on the community. Once the review process is complete, the committee makes their recommendations for funding to the United Way Board of Directors.

The United Way of Central Missouri is made up of 25 member agencies and programs. More than 91,000 Central Missourians depend on the United Way of Central Missouri agencies every year. The annual Community Campaign funds a part of the work of the member agencies so the help will be there when it is needed. The money raised is used to provide health and human services in Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage, and southern Callaway counties.

Each agency undergoes a strict review process annually to determine their United Way of Central Missouri funding for the upcoming year. The process includes a review of the agency’s financial health, as well as the effect their service

INITIATIVES Early Childhood The national United Way Worldwide has developed an initiative for early childhood called Success By 6®. Success By 6® enables communities to provide their children the best opportunity to succeed by the time they enter school. United Way of Central Missouri has formed an Early Childhood Advisory Committee to support and promote early childhood programs and initiatives in the Central Missouri area. Provide Born Learning materials to low-income families as an introduction to early learning. Identify gaps in services/needs in early childhood in our community.

2-1-1 Calls for 2009 2% 2-1-1 is a toll-free phone number connecting people with available community resources and volunteer opportunities. By simply dialing 2-1-1, you can make one call to find or give help. No more wasted time trying to find the right resource. You will reach a trained, caring professional 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. United Way 2-1-1 is always available, any time you need it. It’s efficient, fast, and easy to use.

FamilyWize – A discount prescription drug program available to families without prescription drug coverage or those that are under insured. All area pharmacies accept the familywize card. There are no age restriction, no income restrictions, no limit on how many times you can use it and no waiting to get a card and the cards are free. The average savings is about 20-30% off the retail price. The United Way office has cards available.

With the familywize program we can track the use of the cards in our area and see what families are saving on prescription drugs. People with Internet access can go to www.FamilyWize.org to print a card, look up drug prices, and get a list of participating pharmacies.

2009-2010 COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN CAMPAIGN LEADERSHIP Thanks to the continued generosity of the people and businesses in Central Missouri, the 2009-2010 Community Campaign raised $1,600,006 in pledges. There are more than 8,000 United Way of Central Missouri contributors. Because of this large number, the United Way staff relies heavily on dedicated volunteers to help make each Fall fund-raising effort a success. This group is known as the Campaign Leadership Team. We are grateful and thank all those that helped with the 2009-2010 campaign.

Members of the Speakers Bureau serve as spokespeople for the United Way of Central Missouri during the Community Campaign. Members of this group are known as Pacesetter Companies. Mark has been a volunteer with the United Way for over 20 years. He started volunteering with the Fund Distribution committee in 1989 and served on that committee for 9 years. He has been on the United Way board for 6 years, held the position of Vice-chair, Chairman, and Past-Chairman. Served on the nominating committee, long range planning committee, and the strategic funding to name just a few of the committees he has volunteered for. In addition, he has been a past campaign co-chair. Actually he has probably served on every volunteer committee of the United Way at one time or another. He even stated, “It’s beginning to sink in that after all these years and all the wonderful memories of remarkable people coming together to help those in need in our community, my time has come to move on. Please know that I’m not far away and you can count on me to help you and our beloved United Way any time you ask.”

Don has been the Clinic Coordinator for over five years. During that time, he has shown unbelievable dedication to clients that his agency serves. His staff nominated him and here is what they said about him: “His integrity and dedication are demonstrated daily as he reaches out to members of our community who are in need. He is resourceful and inspiring, yet especially kind. It is a gift to work with a man like him. He teaches us everything he can and willfully dedicates himself to serving the community, yet expects nothing in return from his employees & those he serves. Most of us could only dream of being as selfless and professional as he is…”

UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI FOUNDATION The United Way of Central Missouri Foundation operates to further the mission of the United Way of Central Missouri, including maximizing the organization’s fundraising potential. The Foundation is govern by a Board of Directors.

The United Way of Central Missouri Foundation was established in September 2003. The Foundation offers devoted supporters of the United Way a new avenue for donating, through planned giving. Through planned giving, donors have more flexibility on the time frame for their gifts. Anyone interested in planned giving should contact a trained professional for more information on what option works best for their financial situation. The Foundation can provide memorial envelopes for gifts in memory of loved ones.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT This was an exciting but challenging year. It was a year that reminded us of the important role that the United Way plays in the community. Through good times and tough times, our organization is a constant, steady community partner whose intent is to build a healthy atmosphere in which we all can live and work. The United Way is honored by the trust you place in us, and we work every day to deliver on our pledge to be good stewards of the money given to us.

But staff cannot do it alone. We depend on a large number of volunteers to help us. Whether they are campaign volunteers, fund allocation volunteers or agency volunteers, each play an important part in the mission of the United Way. As an example, on November 12th, the community celebrated the results of the annual campaign led by Mike Kehoe, Warren Krech and their volunteers. Their efforts to make goal were successful due to hard work and the generous nature of our community. Amid economic uncertainty, these volunteers raised more than $1.6 million. Our appreciation and thanks to all of the campaign volunteers for their efforts to build a stronger, healthier community for all of us.

We also want to thank members of the Executive Committee and the United Way Board of Directors for their dedication. Led by Board Chairman Duane Schreimann, these local leaders demonstrated their commitment and faith in our community. Through their leadership, compassion and caring, these citizens have made the United Way, the community and each of us better.

Plans are being made to conduct a self-assessment as part of the certification process for the United Way. It is also the year in which dedicated volunteers will develop strategic plans for 2011 and forward.
