Time Again to Talk About Joining NDU Welcome back to a new school year, and another year of receiving United Voices, the official publication of North Dakota United members!

Our 11,500 members have made their choice to be North Dakota United together, and to pool all of your voices together into the state’s strongest champion of public education and public services. As a new membership year gets started, we hoped to provide all of you with the information you need to convince your colleagues, both veteran and brand new to your profession, to join you in North Dakota United. So, that is the central theme of this fall issue of United Voices!

Inside, you can see images from our “Help Yourself ” membership campaign that we launched in August. There are so many benefits to being a member of ND

United, and you’re all welcome to dig into membership carte blanche, as you would at an all-you-can-eat buffet!

Together, we say that we are ND YOU, and help your self by becoming a member of our association, and using it to shape your career to be the best it possibly can be! And use this issue of United Voices to share with potential members. Have the conversation with them, and let them know why you made the decision to join and why they should, too!

Do Big Things with NDU

Every member challenged to talk to colleagues about our union Since its inception on Sept. 1, 2013, North Dakota United has striven to be the authoritative voice of our state’s public employees. From that day to this one, I have steadfastly made the argument that our members provide the vital public services that North Dakotans have come to expect and deserve. Whether you are teaching North Dakota’s children, supporting educators and children in their work, working for the state, county or municipal government, or preparing the next generation of leaders on one of our outstanding university campuses, you deserve a strong voice.

All the work we do here at ND United is centered around three guiding principles, which I presented to the NDU Board of Directors, and they voted to adopt.

The first principle is to grow our membership. In a membership-driven organization like ours, you must know that more is better. More members mean more voice; more voice means more influence. If each of our 11,500 members signed up just one member, the NDU membership would double to, well, a much larger number. (I am sorry that, like 5 out of 4 Americans, I struggle with math.)

The second guiding principle is to increase the activation of our membership. Activated members do things – BIG things – that positively

impact their lives and the lives of their colleagues. By BIG things, I mean e-mailing legislators, attending NDUsponsored events, enrolling in one of the many professional development courses offered by NDU, or just talking to a colleague who is not a member of NDU and letting them know that their values and aspirations as one who serves the public are shared by our organization.

The final guiding principle of our work dictates that we will increase our government relations footprint. I know!

Politics, currently, are unseemly and tiresome. However, every single decision that affects your work life is a political decision made in either Bismarck or Washington, D.C. Your voice must be in the room or your profession will suffer the consequences. In my view, Pericles said it best: “Just because you do not take an interest in politics does not mean that politics will not take an interest in you.”

So, given our guiding principles, and the fact that YOU are NDU, I am challenging all of us to talk to our colleagues. We need to let them know that we are all stronger together, that collectively, we can induce the changes that we want to see. I am absolutely convinced that, working together, ND United can be a transformational organization unlike any other. Let’s start that discussion and recommit ourselves to great public education and great public service! ndunited.org

Stronger United

Together, we can build a better future for students and educators As we start another year of school, I welcome the new members of North Dakota United and thank all of you who have been members! I am proud to know the wonderful hands our students will be in throughout North Dakota this school year.

All our students, pre-K to college, will have outstanding public-school teachers, higher ed faculty and amazing support staff to help them as they enter our school doors. Many of you have been working this summer break preparing for the weeks and months ahead. As this year begins, I know you have created an environment where all students will be able to learn, create memories and experience many firsts throughout the year.

I am excited to start this new school year with ND United! I am committed to this organization because of what all our local and state leaders do for us. As your NDU Vice President of Education, I ask you to think about what you can do this coming year to make NDU a better and stronger union. Will you attend one of NDU’s amazing professional development classes? Will you help your local as a building rep or join the board?

I was honored to be a part of the StaND Up: Organizing Workshop in Bismarck this summer. Our talented field staff talked about the importance of new members, finding new leaders and what being a member of NDU really means.

This kind of training/professional development is offered all year long.

NDU field staff will help and support you get a collective voice at a local level and NDU offers scholarships and benefits for members and their families.

These are just few benefits that are a part of being a member of NDU. It is up to you what you want to obtain from your membership. I look forward to hearing what you are doing to make ND and U stronger and healthier! I am with you every inch of the way!

We All Stand United

Increase your union’s power and voice by asking co-workers to join you!

State, city and county employees, higher education faculty and staff, K-12 teachers and educational support personnel have joined North Dakota United for a variety of reasons. A sample of the reasons I have heard include: a stronger voice in the workplace; legislative lobbying for salary and benefits; shared values with fellow co-workers; benefits of membership including occupational liability insurance; collective bargaining; my parents were a member of a union; being part of a movement; and I was asked to join.

Whatever your reason was for joining and becoming involved in NDU, thank you for being a member of our union that is working to be the voice of public employees and all working families in North Dakota.

Public employees, higher education faculty and staff, and nearly all school support personnel are prohibited from collectively bargaining for salary and benefits and the working conditions at their place of employment. Until public employees achieve the goal of having the right to bargain collectively, members and potential members of NDU will stand together collectively at our worksites to advocate for the quality services that we provide.

We will be a strong voice for the needs and ideas of public employees to ensure that there will be a quality workforce and the resources necessary for the services that are expected. Public employees are tasked with enforcing and carrying out the laws and programs passed by the Legislature. Our knowledge of the workings of these programs and needs of the people we serve are vital to ensuring the programs run effectively and efficiently.

A Day at the Fair

NDU gets word out to the power of our union at North Dakota State Fair

A NDU booth was set up front-andcenter at the festival tent’s entrance to engage every person as they walked in before stopping by other fun and informative booths ran by local nonprofits.

A mild breeze from outside a large tent draws in tempting aromas of funnel cakes and cheese curds. Foot traffic comes and goes as the temperature hovers around a modest-forNorth Dakota 80 degrees. It’s the Family Day Festival at the North Dakota State Fair — held on July 23, 2019, in Minot – and North Dakota United was the primary sponsor of the 10

“It definitely got the name out there and helped with public recognition. It’s supporting education, and that’s just awesome.” said Anne Volk, a speech and honors English teacher at Legacy High School in Bismarck. She took advantage of the two free tickets per member offered through NDU’s website. Volk’s children were involved with a 4-H event at the fair, so the free tickets were a helpful benefit of being a member.

Minot Education Association President Sarah Hicks concurred with Volk, “A lot of people have used the free tickets,” Hicks said, “I think it’s a good thing.”

Hicks is a former English teacher who now works as a librarian at Magic City Campus High School. She volunteered to help out at the booth and promote NDU’s public image. “The fair gets people from all over the state, so a little

bit of information [about NDU] is going to places across the state.”

To create more lasting memories of the fair and time spent with family, NDU also provided a photobooth for attendees to take pictures of themselves with fun props. “I loved the photobooth and got a great picture,” Volk said.

The biggest draw for NDU’s main booth was hundreds of dollars in free children’s books, provided by a grant from First Book. In order to promote summer reading, kids were able to choose one book each from a selection of 11 award-winners.

Tegen Rhoads, a fifth grader from Sunnyside Elementary in Minot, chose “The Tiger Rising” by Kate DiCamillo.

He offered his nuanced view on tigers as his reason for picking his book.

“Because I like animals. Tigers are not my favorite, but they are definitely cool.” After his stop at the tent, Tegen was excited to check out many of the rides around the fair, and he had a concrete plan for the rest of the day.

Additionally, thousands of attendees were able to learn more about our union. This was a day to give back to our members and demonstrate to the public our support of North Dakota’s kids and families.

“NDU and MEA need to be seen in a positive light,” Hicks said. “For a long time, we’ve been on the defensive, so we need to take steps to be on the offensive.

It’s important for people to know who we are.”

Creating Career Awareness and Exploration

Project made possible by the NEA Foundation’s Rural and Remote Education Opportunity Project

Thanks to a generous grant from the National Education Foundation’s Rural and Remote Opportunity Project, North Dakota United was able to help fund career awareness and exploration events for Native American students at Valley City State University and the Central Regional Area Career and Technical Education Center (CRACTC) in Bismarck.

NDU President Nick Archuleta sits on the NEA Foundation Board and was instrumental in receiving this funding for North Dakota students. “As a member of the NEA Foundation Board of Directors, I have seen the good work that the NEAF has contributed to across the country,” Archuleta said. “The NEAF has partnered with organizations big and small, private and public, to provide opportunities to students that enrich their knowledge.

“

“I wanted NEAF to partner with ND United to address some of the needs that we have in our state, too. Through our combined efforts, we were able to partner with others to introduce Career and Technical Education to both urban and rural Native American students, as well as to send two new cadres of Native American students to the STEM Academy on the campus of Valley City

State University. We hope to continue to partner with other organizations in the state to grow these opportunities for our students.”

At Valley City State University, students from New Town and Trenton participated in a weeklong academy learning about chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, computer programming and more. The academy, in its second year, got its start as a pilot with twelve New Town Public School students in 2018. The idea sprouted from a trip that local education stakeholders took to Alaska a couple of years prior, called the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP), whose goal is to place Alaska Natives in career leadership paths in STEM fields. The goal is to help students grow both socially and academically.

The students worked closely with instructors in and out of traditional classrooms. There were few dull moments during the week. “Specifically the program started with the schools that are serving the racial and socioeconomic minority students, your underserved students if you will, and we just had a relationship with New Town Public Schools and we talked to the principal and superintendent there, and that’s how it all got started,” said Dr. Jamie Wirth, VCSU Math Department Chair.

Payton DeCoteau is a New Town Education Association and NDU member. He teaches history and geography and says he would have jumped at an opportunity like this when he was in high school.

“We want to keep pushing these kids more and more and helping them increase their knowledge, DeCoteau said. “And showing them that this stuff seems like it’s hard – whenever you see it on TV or you hear about kids going to college – but you can see that it’s actually fun and it might make them want to do something like this when they get older.”

that it’s important to provide students with skills they need to be flexible along with the rapid changes.

“When we look at 21st Century skills, one of them is collaboration,” Ketterling said. “Students from these two schools have to collaborate and work together. And then we have to be creative. When they were doing photosynthesis downstairs, they created an actual experiment, and it’s fun to see the questions they come up with.

The other is communication, which is everybody needs to communicate, and this is helping that come along. And the other is critical thinking — how do you solve a problem and come up with a solution to it?” Ketterling said.

In Bismarck, the Central Regional Area Career and Technical Center (CRACTC), in partnership with the Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy, has run a successful program the past four years that targets 50 eighth-grade girls interested in STEAM to tour the facility, in order to foster a connection with the Career Academy.

The second project of this grant created an off-shoot of the STEM Academy, but for students on the Standing Rock and Fort Berthold reservations. Eighty tenth-graders were transported to the Career Academy three different times during the 2018-19 school year to explore the programs offered at the Career Academy, but more importantly, what is offered through the online Central Regional Area Career & Technical Center component.

Students from the rural school districts of Standing Rock Community High School, Solen High School, Selfridge High School and White Shield High School were transported to Bismarck on Feb. 27, March 27, and April 14 to participate in the newly developed series of career and technical education awareness and exploration. The students performed hands-on learning activities related to the CTE program areas of Medical Health Sciences, Graphic Commercial Arts and Technology & Engineering (STEM).

Medical Health Science set up several hands-on learning stations for students to gain firsthand experiences in CPR, suturing, gowning and gloving, tourniquets and athletic injury/taping.

Students also received medical items to take home, including stethoscopes and first aid kits. Within the Commercial Graphic Arts area, students learned how to design and apply graphic art techniques onto t-shirts and cell phone pop sockets, which they also were able to take home. In STEM, collaborative teams of students were immersed in the engineering design process in order to build, test, and fly drones.

“The Native American Career Awareness and Exploration Series was a wonderful learning experience for regional rural Native American students,” said Lyle Krueger, assistant director of CRACTC. “Several students and school staff who attended stated how much they appreciated the handson learning opportunities in STEM, Health Sciences and Commercial Arts over the three-day series. Individuals from each of the schools asked if we were going to host the series again

during the ’19-20 school year! We are very grateful for the funding to help provide learning opportunities for rural Native American students in our region and hope to be able to continue to work together with ND United in the future!”

This project was a completely new endeavor for the Career Academy and Central Regional Area Career & Technical Center, designed to allow the entities to encourage Native American students to take CTE courses in a thoughtful, direct and targeted manner.

“What is clear is that the students who participated in these programs have had their curiosity piqued and their skills in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math enhanced,” NDU President Archuleta said. “These young people have been engaged in STEM and it will be interesting to see how their exposure to these areas will impact their academic and even career choices in the years ahead. North Dakota United’s involvement in these vital programs would not be possible without the support and encouragement of the NEA Foundation. Its mission is to advance the purpose of education and to put exceptional learning opportunities in the paths of students who may not otherwise have access to them.”

At the Edge of Technology Ed

Valley City State University leads nation in offering career and technical education online

For almost 130 years, Valley City State University has been serving its central mission of training teachers for their careers in the classroom. Traditionally, that preparation comes inside the four walls of a classroom. But, for the VCSU Department of Technology, that preparation most often takes place online to nontraditional students living all over the country, and across the world.

“I have personally worked with students in 37 states,” said Dr. Peder Gjovik, associate professor and chair of the technology department at VCSU, and member of North Dakota United. “And I have a student teacher in Cameroon this year. That’s my first international student that I can remember working with.”

Gjovik has been involved with the 16

department of technology, since he was a student at VCSU in 1975-77, training to be an industrial arts teacher under his mentor, Dr. Don Mugan. In between his tenure as a student at Valley City State and returning there to adjunct teach in 2006, he owned and operated several printing and graphics businesses, taught in a two-year college graphics program in Wyoming for 21 years and received his master’s degree in industrial technology from the University of North Dakota.

He began teaching full-time at VCSU in 2008, and was named department chair in 2014. So, he’s seen first-hand the maturation of their online pathways to career and technical education licensure program.

“The concept for this program actually started back in the ‘90s under Dr. Don Mugan,” Gjovik said. “It was at a time in the ‘90s when there were some pretty serious changes going on as far as what was considered the traditional industrial

arts.” And in 2000, VCSU became the first completely online undergraduate program in the U.S. to offer initial licensure in standards-based technology education, thanks to the vision of Dr. Mugan. “He wrote a grant to the federal Department of Education,” Gjovik said, “(which) basically shut the program down for two years and they rewrote the curriculum to make it an online curriculum for training teachers all over the country.”

A lot of larger universities didn’t believe, at that time, that you could teach handson technical-applied concepts from a distance, Gjovik said. “You have to be around tools, you have to be in the lab, you have to have direct supervision,” he said. “Dr. Mugan didn’t necessarily believe that. And he pulled together a team of some wonderful, visionary educators. Dr. Mugan was really the visionary; he saw 15-20 years down the road.”

In 2007, VCSU added masterdegree options in Secondary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education, Elementary STEM Education, and Career and Technical Education. “After that, the STEM movement came along,” Gjovik said. “We were the leading institution in the state that actually brought STEM to the state and that was, again, Don Mugan’s vision. He wrote a grant … and his vision was to have a North Dakota STEM network. So, he brought in all the other universities. We did trainings, we taught them what STEM was in our view of STEM, as a methodology (and) as a way of teaching.”

Recently, a Master of Arts in Teaching was also added, which allows a teacher

certification pathway for those with nonteaching bachelor degrees. VCSU is now uniquely situated as being online and accessible to students wherever they may be, geographically and in their lives and careers. “We’re the only undergraduate initial licensure program that’s online in the country,” Gjovik said.

By Gjovik’s estimate, the future seems bright for VCSU’s “grand experiment.”

“In many respects I think we’re better known nationally than we are locally at times,” he said. “In 2015, I was invited to do a presentation to the Mississippi Valley Technology and Engineering Educators Association (MVTEE).

And as I was being introduced by the CEO of International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (IATA), he referred to Valley City State as ‘IATA’s shining star’ and (also) referred to ‘Valley City State’s grand experiment.’

So that’s how we’re recognized nationally, doing something that nobody else has figured out how to do it – especially at the undergraduate level – to prepare those teachers.”

Students Give of Their Time

‘Flex days’ at Simle allow trio the time they need to volunteer, record mini-documentary

Simle Middle School in Bismarck introduced “flex days” to students this past school year.

There have been ups and downs, but the idea is to give students a handful of days through the school year to engage in subjects and projects they they’re passionate about.

It’s a student-driven learning environment where the students step outside of their comfort zones and develop skills like collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.

The flex days provide time to dig in to topics leading up to the release of a final project — presented to the public — at the end of the school year.

That led a trio of eighth graders from Simle to engage in a pair of volunteer 18

opportunities. At Ministry on the Margins, they serve over 800 people each week with food, clothing and other necessities. The same is true at the nearby Heaven’s Helpers Soup Café.

On the day the boys volunteered, they helped provide food for more than 1,300 people.

Jayden Ahmann, Kolby Erhardt and Pacey Kutzer are putting together a mini-documentary on homelessness and hunger. It’s a passion project, and they want to open the eyes of others— especially their peers. Spending a lot of time outside of traditional classrooms has been eye opening.

“My mom, a couple of years ago, she brought me into Ministry on the Margins and that’s what kind of got me thinking about this,” Jayden Ahmann said. “And I was like, these people are coming to these, every week, struggling for food. And they’re kind of just

skimming by with what they can. And I realized I can go home right now, I can pull out a box of Cheez-Its ... and I can sit there for hours on end on my fancy phones and stuff, just eating, and these people are going home (with) not a single minute of rest because they are out trying to take care of their families. That really just got to us, that these people are living in these situations.”

“We’re learning about a lot of different life skills,” Kolby Erhardt said, “and learning a lot about the world around us instead of sitting down at a desk and watching a teacher talk and then watching videos and taking a test and studying and doing other assignments.”

North Dakota United and Bismarck Education Association member Andrea Weikum is the educator helping to guide the three through this project.

The boys say they can’t look the other way.

“That was instantly what they wanted to do,” Weikum said. “They knew it was a problem and they knew it was an issue. You can see it in our community; it’s become a much more visible issue in our community. You can see people on the street, you see people that don’t have phones, that don’t have money, that don’t have food. So that’s where they took their project right away, and they did a lot of research, and so they researched and discovered and over and over and over they were amazed at the numbers they were seeing of this being a problem nationwide. And I think when they zeroed in what is going on in our community, they saw that there is a huge need.”

The students have learned a lot about homelessness and poverty. Mental health experts have told them a variety of circumstances can lead people to

“I think all we really can do is spread awareness and help as much as possible with volunteering and helping at homeless shelters and donating what we can,” Erhardt said, “and what we need to do to help those people out and get them affordable housing.”

“In my opinion, I think that everybody should get out and do a little bit of service,” Ahmann added, “whether it’s an hour, hour and a half out of your month, it helps so much because it gives you this awareness towards what’s really happening.

Whether it’s a hot cup of coffee, or a hot bowl of soup, Jayden, Kolby and Pacey have learned and grown through the experience.

“It is fun to see their hearts open up,” Weikum said. “Because until you give a student the time and space to process through that and see that I don’t think they even realized where their hearts are because we’re so busy and we’re moving so fast so they had that time and that space and in that time and that space I think they even surprised themselves at how big their hearts were.”

It is the end of an era for NDU and our past NEA Director

Greetings to all our North Dakota United members! This will be my final report to you as I am officially retired from teaching and I have termed out as your NEA Director. I would first like to thank all of you for the opportunity of representing you as your State Director for the National Education Association these last six years.

NEA Representative Assembly 2019 was held in Houston, Texas, on July 1-7. Twenty-two dedicated delegates 20

represented our state this year, plowing through over 100 New Business Items.

The highlight of this RA was listening to 10 presidential hopefuls as they pled their case to educators at the first-ever #StrongPublicSchools Presidential Forum. NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia moderated the one-on-one discussions with the 10 hopefuls.

NDU delegates attended the NEA Civil Rights Annual Ceremony where 12 inspiring individuals were introduced.

Honors were bestowed on the NEA Social Activist of the Year, NEA ESP of

the Year, NEA Teacher of the Year and the NEA Higher Educator of the Year.

The delegation voted two new educators to the NEA Executive Committee. Also, votes were taken on New Business Items, Legislative Amendments, Resolutions, Policy Statements, Bylaw Amendments and Constitutional Amendments. I am personally proud of your delegates, who spent hours away from their families over the July Fourth week working tirelessly on the issues of YOUR union.

And, as I always try to do, I will end with my mantra:

Telling North Dakota Stories

Writing group collecting 130 stories of our state for 130 years of statehood

What’s your North Dakota story?

That’s the question that North Dakota United member Kim Rensch has for everyone in our union. She, a middlelevel language arts facilitator and gifted services facilitator for Fargo Public Schools, is working with fellow NDU member and teacher in Watford City, Erika Dyk, and Angie Hase, a teacher in Moorhead, Minn., on a project called Write130! Their goal is to collect 130 new stories on their website, www. myndstory.com, from people all over the state in time for the 130th anniversary of North Dakota’s statehood, on Nov. 2, 2019.

“Our goal is to build community through storytelling because North 22

Dakota is a character in all of our stories,” Rensch said. “As teachers, it’s important to us to both nurture literacy skills and help our students know that being from North Dakota is something to celebrate, rather than to feel marginalized on the larger global stage.”

Their writing group first started in 2012, as Rensch got involved with the Red River Valley Writing Project at North Dakota State University. “We started a writing group from that fall after the annual Summer Institute of 2012. And that fall, there were, I think, about 11 of us who continued in a writing group and those numbers kind of dwindled over time. … but in one of the smaller groups, it was just myself and then Erika Dyk, who at that time she had left the

classroom to be a grad student and was getting her master’s degree at NDSU, and she was joining us for these writing groups. And I said to her one time, ‘You know, I keep thinking about how the state of North Dakota is changing so much.’”

Dyk was in a class that required her to build a website, and they teamed up with Angie Hase to begin building their site. “We decided that we wanted this open to the community, but it’s also teacher-centric and student-centric. So, we started to build it so that teachers had resources to use in the classroom to encourage students to tell stories. It’s free, so anybody could come along and submit a story. We don’t have an age limit on there, so kids to elderly can tell their story.”

They officially launched their website in 2015 at the North Dakota Council of Teachers of English Summer Conference. “We did a roundtable session,” Rensch said. “There was, I think, about 20- to 30-minute session, and teachers could come around, and we did a quick little writing (exercise) to generate some ideas that other people could write for their story. There was one teacher who took that back to his students, and had some high school students writing stories.”

Their group has also facilitated writing exercises with senior citizens. “In the fall of 2017, Angie and I did a writing workshop with Touchmark assistedliving facilities because we thought it would be a great way to try to capture some older voices and the history of the state. One woman started writing stories for her children and grandchildren, and that was going to be one of their Christmas gifts that year. … And such

a vibrant community! You might think a retirement home would not be that active, but they’re very active there, and it was a great place to go and get those voices.”

All North Dakota United members, in K-12 and higher education, public employees, retired members and students, are urged to contribute your stories for inclusion on the My North Dakota Story website. Just visit www. myndstory.com and click on “Submit Your Write 130 Story” or read some of the stories their team has already compiled.

Rensch said that the My North Dakota Story team is pursuing a partnership with libraries across the state to host writing workshops on Saturday, Nov. 2. They welcome any and all participation from NDU members, and their students, friends and family.

“We’re just trying to find a way to build community,” she said, “and one great way to do that is through storytelling.”

NDU Professional Development: A Customized Learning Approach North Dakota United is changing up how we deliver professional development in order to better fit your needs.

While we will be continuing with our popular book studies and Elevating the Profession through Educator Ethics trainings, we will be offering more customized learning opportunities for our members and potential members.

Customized learning is professional development designed based on the individual’s wants and needs. This format will allow participants to choose from multiple topics/themes and will allow for an individually tailored plan.

the following categories: Classroom Management/General Education; Innovative Schools; Leadership; Personal Wellness; Social-Emotional Learning; Student Behavioral Health/Child Trauma; and General Topics.

TYPES OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FORMATS Book Studies: A variety of relevant topics to enhance professional skills and awareness are offered throughout the year. Typically a new book study begins each week. The format of the book studies enables communication and collaboration, along with an opportunity for self-directed learning.

Elevating the Profession Through Educator Ethics: This course reviews

ethics as defined by the ND Educational Standards and Practices Board.

Participants examine various ethical situations along with actual cases that the Board has addressed. Topics include technology do’s and don’ts; relationships with students, parents, and colleagues; and the dichotomy of a school employee’s life. It includes a method to use when making decisions and is a highly interactive course, offered 6 times a year across the state.

Mini-Courses: Mini-Courses are short duration trainings that alone will not qualify for credit. The typical mini course is less than 3 hours in length.

Mini-Courses will be offered every Wednesday night from 7:00-9:00 p.m. via an online webinar and begin Oct. 2, 2019. Participants register and pay an initial fee for access to the course and then can participate in any session. For credit, participants must participate for at least three of five live sessions; the remaining can be completed by watching the recordings which will be made available.

NEA Micro-Credentials: MicroCredentials are competency-based, on-demand, personalized, sharable professional development. Individual micro-credentials are typically organized into “stacks” of similar themed topics and have 3+ topics in each. MicroCredentials are ideal for PLCs. NEA Micro-Credentials are on-demand learning and designed to be jobembedded.

ParaSharp: ParaSharp provides concise and relevant training to paraeducators in a format you can easily digest and apply.

Used as just-in-time independent study, or as part of a broader staff training effort, ParaSharp helps educators become

more effective. The online training takes place anytime, anyplace that works best for you.

Trauma Informed Schools Series: Trauma Informed Schools training toolkit of strategies makes it easy to give all staff on campus critical information not only on ACEs and their impact, but also on practical and effective strategies to build a trauma-informed culture of care. The strategies help you immediately apply a trauma-informed approach to daily practice. The online training takes place anytime, anyplace that works best for you.

HOW DOES IT WORK? How the new trainings work varies between courses; however, all have the same core structure: 1. Participants register at pd.ndunited.org.

2. Participants may pick and choose which course(s) they would like to take.

3. All courses are available for at least 1 credit from UND. 4. All work is completed on the participant’s own time, although some work may have specific due dates included. NDU provides support to assist with the completion of the programs.

It’s hard to believe that school has started and there is a hint of fall in the air.

The focus of this issue is on the benefits of your membership. It’s interesting as this summer, my husband I took a baseball bus trip. We saw five different parks in five days. Not surprising, there were a number of retired teachers from all over the country on this trip. One couple was from North Dakota. In visiting with them, my husband told them I was president of NDU-R. They asked me this exact question: “What are the benefits of joining the retired organization?” They had never been asked to join before they both retired.
