HOPE.
is this incredible gift we have as Christians,
not because we see the world as eternal optimists, but because of our faith in the resurrected Jesus Christ. We believe in a God of miracles, a God who overcame the grave, and a God who still makes a way where there seems to be no way even today.
God is a God of Hope, and we see God at work in this place called United Theological Seminary and through its vast network of students, donors, alumni/ae and friends throughout the world. Through this 2021-22 Annual Report, we wanted to share some beautiful stories of hope that are just a sample of what God is up to lately:
You will meet Camisha Chambers, a Doctor of Ministry student bringing hope and healing through music. You will hear about a dramatic increase in new master’s students through the creation of Houses of Study to meet felt needs in the Church, including a Hispanic House of Study that allows students to complete their Master of Divinity completely in Spanish.
You will encounter some of the adventurous leaders pioneering fresh expressions of the Church to reach those who do not know the love of Jesus Christ.
You will get a taste of the new things God is doing through the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center, meet some of the new faculty God is bringing to United, and hear about an incredible opportunity United now has, thanks to The Shepherd’s Fund, to come alongside retired clergy and their spouses in times of financial need.
As you read, we want you to hear the words, “Thank you!” God is working through you — the donors, alumni/ae and friends of United — who are sowing seeds of hope through generous gifts, referring potential students, praying and sharing what God is doing.
Callie Picardo Vice President for DevelopmentMay the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

It
Thank you for partnering with United to share the hope we have in Jesus Christ with the world.
President’s Update
During these challenging times, Christians remember that our hope for the future is not in any political or religious leader nor any governmental or religious institution.
In 1834 during difficult days in England, Rev. Edward Mote wrote this hymn reminding us that our ultimate hope is always and only in Jesus.
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand: all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.
At United Theological Seminary, our hope is in Jesus, and Jesus continues to bless us in ways we never could have anticipated during this past year. Here are some of the ways Christ has blessed us:
• For the first time in five years we saw an increase in the fall enrollment, from 397 students in fall 2021 to 467 students in fall 2022, an 18% increase. This was primarily due to the establishment of four Houses of Study (Hispanic, Fresh Expressions, Global Pentecostal and Global Wesleyan), which brought in the majority of the increase in master’s students this year.
• Non-tuition income for fiscal year 2021-2022, from gifts to the Burn the Mortgage campaign, gifts to support scholarships, bequests, endowment funds, and the Ministerial Education Fund was $7.0 million. This is the largest annual income across all these sources that United has received in decades.
• United was also given $2 million from an anonymous foundation to reduce student debt by up to $20,000 for each of our 2021-2022 graduating students. As a result, 30% graduated without any educational debt.
• An anonymous foundation also gave $1 million to establish the Academic Dean’s Scholarship, available to eligible incoming students.

• Christ has also blessed us with three new Professors: Dr. Reggie Abraham, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy, Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns, Visiting Professor of Pentecostal Studies and Director of the Global Pentecostal House of Study, and Dr. Jack Jackson, Visiting Professor of Evangelism and World Methodism.
Christ is continuing to bless the mission and ministry of United Theological Seminary, and we are grateful.
“On Christ the solid rock we stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
Grace and peace,
Dr. Kent Millard President
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus...
Jubliee Grant THANK YOU
This past year, United received a grant that was lifechanging for the class of 2021-2022. An anonymous donor wanting to help seminary graduates with their educational debt gave $2 million for United to distribute to the graduating class of 2021-2022. This Jubilee Grant paid off up to $20,000 of each graduate’s student loans from their seminary education as well as previous undergraduate or graduate education. Because of this grant, 30% of the class of 2021-2022 graduated completely debt free and the others had $20,000 less debt weighing them down in ministry.
Biblically, the year of Jubilee happens every fifty years, so it was fitting that in the year of United’s 150th anniversary, the seminary would become debt free by burning the mortgage. Thanks to this donor, that blessing was extended to graduates. To receive the Jubilee Grant, there were two simple requirements: graduate in the 2021-2022 academic year and complete a four-week online course on financial management taught by Rev. Dr. Rosario Picardo, Director of Houses of Study, and Mrs. Callie Picardo, Vice President for Development, based on their recent book Money Talks: A Biblical Take on Earning, Saving, Spending, and Giving. Below are excerpts from thank you notes written by some of the graduates who received the grant:
There are times when words like thank you seem too small to convey such enormous gratitude. Being a recipient of the Jubilee Grant is one of those times. It is a most generous grant that comes at the most needed time. As you are well aware, the recent pandemic left many families and churches struggling to recover financially, emotionally, and spiritually. For the past three years I have relied upon my church to help with my tuition. However, because giving has been down significantly, the church would not be able to do so this semester. Additionally, because of financial burdens within our family, my wife and I have had to use our resources to help others in the family. Receiving the Jubilee Grant this semester helped alleviate the financial burden of both the church and my family.
I almost did not make it to this point in my journey because of the cost of attending seminary. I knew God was telling me to do whatever I needed to do to finish, and that meant taking out student loans... [The Jubilee Grant] truly felt like an answered prayer and I understood why God was calling me back at that moment. I praise God for your generosity and cannot say enough to express my gratitude.
I would never imagine that someone could have a heart to bless others at this magnitude… Instead of me continuing to divide my attention between earning income to pay off my student loans, your generous financial gift will provide me the opportunity to begin focusing on transitioning into full-time ministry.
Since I began in ministry fresh out of Bible College, I have been paying down college and seminary loans as I pursued the call of God in my life. It appears, because of your generosity, that this will be the first time in twentyfive years that I will be completely free of all educational debt. Thank you for your investment in me as a pastor, husband, and father as I pursue the adventurous life of serving Jesus.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
Hope in Houses of Study
By Rev. Dr. Rosario Picardo, Director of the Houses of Study
We are seeing something miraculous taking place in United’s master’s programs through the Houses of Study initiative. In just one year, United has reversed a decline in master’s students and has a record-breaking number of new master’s students starting classes in Fall 2022!
What is a House of Study? Houses of Study at United equip students for service in the communities, movements and denominations where they serve. Students journey through their master’s degree with the support of a House of Study director and take elective classes with their peers in the track related to their House of Study.
The Houses of Study launched last year, ramping up slowly but accelerating into this fall with 78 students enrolled in a House of Study. For many of these students, their chosen House of Study was the reason they came to United.
Nearly 50 of these students are part of the new Casa de Estudios Hispana (Hispanic House of Study), earning their Master of Divinity fully in Spanish. Currently, these students come from the United States, Cuba, Peru, Columbia, Mexico and Angola.
The following Houses of Study have officially launched with students:
Casa de Estudios Hispana
Fresh Expressions
Global Pentecostal
Global Wesleyan
The following have students in the pipeline and will launch soon:
African Methodist
Episcopal Zion
Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship
Global Lutheran
Stay tuned for additional Houses of Study, including a Korean House of Study planned to launch next Fall!
Funding for the Houses of Study initiative has been made possible thanks to a generous grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative.
Are You Ready for an Adventure?
By Rev. Dr. Michael Beck, Director of Fresh Expressions House of Study
Thirty-two bold visionary leaders just completed a year-long adventure and 18 more have embarked on theirs. These men and women are boldly leading the church outside the four walls, not discarding the inherited church but bringing new life through the creation of Fresh Expressions.
They have all been part of the Adventurers Leadership Academy (ALA), an immersive, year-long, cohort-based training process that certifies lay and clergy leaders to cultivate fresh expressions of church. Through a mixture of both class-based and peer-to-peer learning, along with guided in-context experimentation, participants become proficient in missional ministry. Upon completion, United Theological Seminary confers a Certificate in Fresh Expressions and Adventurer Ministry and 8.0 CEUs.
Meet some of the adventurers who just graduated:
Jessica Taylor, a 24-year-old Florida lay church planter, noticed more Americans were moving into RVs. She and her husband, the Rev. Jeff Taylor, envisioned a kind of church that doesn’t need walls but could take place in campgrounds or online among people who RV. They purchased an RV and began living incarnationally among RVers. RV Church was born.
At Grace Church in Cape Coral, Florida, Heather Evans, a lay person, oversees fresh expressions. Her biggest focus is “making disciples of Jesus among the nones, dones, lonely and marginalized people in the 239 area code.” She personally leads a Dinner Church, Messy Church, and a fresh expression for single moms called Our Time. Grace is a large church, living into a “blended ecology,” in which inherited and emerging forms of church live together in symbiotic relationship.
Piper Ramsey-Sumner is lead cultivator of Fresh Expressions Florida. As a lay person, she does public theology and creates community in digital spaces like TikTok and Discord, as well as locally through a book club and pub community. Piper started a thriving network called Tallahassee Brew Theology, a community that meets in local breweries to engage in meaningful conversations on subjects related to religion, philosophy and culture.
The launch of the Adventurers Leadership Academy at United was made possible thanks to a generous innovation grant from The Foundation for Evangelism.

Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center
By Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey, Director of the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center
United’s new Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center celebrated its official dedication on May 20, 2022, featuring Bishop Bruce Ough in person to cast vision for resourcing God’s Church afresh.
The Innovation Center’s artist-in-residence, Maria Bellini, offered an accompanying art show. Live jazz music enhanced the ambiance, as dozens of persons crowded the newly renovated Innovation Center’s office suite to celebrate, to walk and pray blessings through its spaces, and to be reminded anew that all holy innovation comes through prayer as we ask God for new possibilities, new ideas and open doors for new opportunities.
Since the start of 2022, the Innovation Center has already engaged more than 1,000 participants (pastors, leaders, congregational members) through more than 40 live online webinars, training events and courses — all designed to set the stage for prayer-fueled creativity, learning and equipping for the increased vitality of leaders and congregations everywhere.
Every semester more new students enroll and join the Innovation Center’s growing Doctor of Ministry focus group, “Open the Floodgates,” through United’s doctoral program. Each student shares a passion for breakthrough prayer as the foundation for innovating unique church strategies for the future.
And through a new partnership with the Center for Spiritual Formation in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in September 2022 the Innovation Center enrolled an inaugural group of 28 individuals in its two-year “Ministry of Spiritual Direction” intensive online program.

These and other new initiatives have and are providing an ongoing source of hope and encouragement outwards beyond the physical walls of the seminary, as United’s Innovation Center extends opportunity, learning and guidance to an expanding number of churches and leaders of all backgrounds, contexts and locations — all hungry for hopefilled perspective and innovative next steps forward.
Need assistance, or have ideas yourself? Check out the Center’s latest offerings listed at united.edu/innovation-center, or email director Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey at snkibbey@united.edu.

The Power of Preaching
United believes in the power of preaching the Gospel. Jesus commanded His disciples, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15). To help the Church continue that legacy, United offered three opportunities this past Fall to help pastors refine their preaching:
Renowned homiletician and author Rev. Dr. Frank A. Thomas, PhD, (DMin '91) taught the Art of the Dangerous Sermon during United’s annual Preaching Seminar, available as part of a course for master’s students or as continuing education.

Dr. Byoung Sam Kim (DMiss, '98), senior pastor of Manna Church in South Korea led a powerful seminar on Worship and Preaching in Post-Covid-19. Provided by the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center, this event reached more than 100 Korean- and English-speaking leaders attending in person and online, with Dr. Kim presenting in Korean and an interpreter providing simultaneous interpretation in English.
Finally, the annual Dr. Charles E. Booth Lecture Series Conference continued the legacy of United alumnus, the late Rev. Dr. Charles E. Booth (DMin, '90). This year’s virtual event featured Bishop W. Darin Moore, Dr. Robert Charles Scott, Rev. Tellis Chapman, Dr. Kia Hood-Scott, and others to equip leaders for Effective Discipleship in a Co-Pandemic World.

Student Spotlight: Camisha Chambers
“United was a container for my metamorphosis,” she says.
Camisha grew up in the church, where she was involved in youth work, served at evangelism events, and received a powerful prophetic word over her life at age 15. As an adult, in 2015, she heard God’s call to ministry. However, she had her own plans.

“I was going to be COO of a Fortune-500 company, travel and make lots of money,” Camisha explains.
Driven and hard-working, Camisha earned multiple degrees that launched her into a successful career in the political and corporate sectors. But, privately, she felt empty and fell into a dark place.
“I realized that I was consistently chasing after ‘the more’ in my own merit rather than the ultimate source in Jesus Christ.”
In a moment of despair, she found herself crying out to God on her knees, “If this is all there is, God, I don’t want it.” She ended her prayer by committing to the call she had heard before: “If you redeem the time and allow me to go into ministry, I promise you I will do this and will do this correctly.”
Camisha looked to the legacy of her grandfather, Michael Harris Sr., who had been a pastor, and she discovered he received his Master of Divinity at United in 1979. After attending United’s “DMin for-a-Day” open house, she made the decision to begin seminary in the Fall of 2018 and allowed God to take the lead.

“I came in very helpless, quiet, disjointed and unsettled in life,” says Camisha. Her transformation began in Zimmerman Chapel on December 7, 2018, as God spoke through Dr. Kim Maas (DMin '13) at the Holy Spirit Seminar the exact prophetic words Camisha had heard as a fifteen-year-old.
“When I was there in that moment receiving that word, I was able to be free and finally be present,” she recalls.
Four years later, Camisha has successfully defended her doctoral thesis on spiritual cultivation and trauma healing through music therapy, and she will receive her Doctor of Ministry in December. She currently serves as Associate Pastor at the United Methodist Church and Community Development for All People in Columbus, Ohio, and recently has become Executive Director of the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, a door that God opened through her doctoral work at United.
“United
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
has helped me to see the gospel embodied,” Camisha says, “as we see how Jesus went beyond just transaction to help individuals go from a state of helplessness to wholeness.”
When you meet Camisha Chambers (DMin '22) you are immediately struck by her radiance and immense joy from within. However, her testimony reveals this came out of a painful journey that God miraculously redeemed full circle at United in Zimmerman Chapel, December 2018.Camisha brings greetings at the Fellowship’s Music and Worship Arts Week, held at Lake Junaluska, NC, June 2022.
Meet Our New Faculty
We spent some time getting to know United’s newest faculty members with a few introductory questions. Read on to learn more about what motivates them in and outside of theological education.
Dr. Reggie Abraham joined the faculty of United Theological Seminary on July 1, 2022, as Assistant Professor of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care. Dr. Abraham holds a ThM and MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary. His PhD, also from Princeton, was in Pastoral Theology with a specialization in Pastoral Care.

Tell us about a pivotal moment or person that shaped your faith journey.
I was disillusioned with religion in my late teens and had come to a point where I was ready to walk away from the Christian faith. Around this time, however, I had a dynamic encounter with the Holy Spirit that transformed me and completely altered the trajectory of my life.
What are you most excited about in coming to United?
There’s a lot to be excited about — great leadership, brilliant faculty and staff, faithful students who are difference-makers in their ministry contexts. However, what initially drew me here was United’s commitment to “historic faith, Scriptural holiness, and church renewal.” I believe that God is doing something here that is significant and noteworthy in the world of theological education.
What do you like to do for fun?
These days I pursue whatever fun activities my kids inflict on me. My most recent fun experience has been a dizzying array of amusement park rides at the Columbus Zoo. (Although indeed fun, I don’t recommend anyone attempt such pursuits shortly after having lunch.)
Why did you pick your field of study?
I was fairly good at most pastoral tasks, but I was kind of lousy at pastoral care. I had no idea of what to say to someone who was sick, or dying, or facing marital conflict. Instead of leaning into my strengths, I decided to lean into my weaknesses.
Where do you see signs of hope in the Church today?
I draw a lot of inspiration from churches in the global South. I am an immigrant from India where there is tremendous church growth despite severe opposition to the Gospel from militant anti-Christian forces. The church in India reminds me that the Gospel is powerful and the possibilities of divine grace are endless.
Is there a Scripture or other resource that you turn to when you need hope?
These days I think a lot about 2 Cor. 4:6-14, beginning with these delicious words: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (ESV).
New Faculty Q&A
Cheryl Bridges Johns

Visiting Professor of Pentecostal Studies
Dr. Cheryl Bridges Johns joined the faculty of United on July 1, 2022 as Visiting Professor of Pentecostal Studies. In addition, she serves as Director of United’s Global Pentecostal House of Study. An ordained member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dr. Bridges Johns brings a wealth of experience as an ecumenist and scholar.
Tell us about a pivotal moment or person that shaped your faith journey.
As I have gone from grace to grace, my faith journey has been shaped by many pivotal moments. During my childhood and adolescence, my uncle served as both pastor and mentor. He gave me opportunities to preach, lead in worship and evangelize. During my time as a graduate student at Wheaton College, Dr. Lois LeBar was influential in my formation. She was a master teacher who inspired me to pursue teaching in higher education. My mother-in-law was a Spiritfilled lay woman who, much like Susanna Wesley, taught a large Bible Study group. She was a woman of prayer and discernment.
What are you most excited about in coming to United?
I’m most excited about participating in a community that uniquely blends high academic standards and Spirit-filled life.
What do you like to do for fun?
My husband and I love to camp, hike and flyfish. I also love playing with and spoiling my five grandchildren.
Why did you pick your field of study?
I guess you could say my field of study “picked me.” I love the intersection of theology and the life of the Church, and see myself as a pastor-theologian.
Where do you see signs of hope in the Church today?
I see signs of hope in the vitality of the global Church and expressions of Christianity in the global South. I see signs of hope at United.
Is there a Scripture or other resource that you turn to when you need hope?
Through the years I’ve found life and hope in Psalm 37. It reminds me to “not fret” and to trust in the Lord.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
New Faculty Q&A
Jack Jackson Visiting Professor of Evangelism and World Methodism
Tell us about a pivotal moment or person that shaped your faith journey.
Bill S. was the leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the university from which I graduated. We became friends and he patiently walked alongside me as I first started pursuing Christ and his kingdom.
What are you most excited about in coming to United?
I’m so happy to be with a group of people who seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to live in his presence, while pursuing academic excellence.
What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy exercising, following business trends, snow skiing and exploring new places.
Why did you pick your field of study?
I believe every Christian is tasked to articulate the gospel to their close friends and family in ways people can understand and then prayerfully, respond to in grace.
Where do you see signs of hope in the Church today?
I see signs of hope in the Church everywhere. In general, I’m an optimistic person and I believe the Holy Spirit is always at work in every person’s life. But many people don’t recognize the Spirit’s presence because they’ve never learned to be on the lookout for it.
Is there a Scripture or other resource that you turn to when you need hope?
“[B]ut in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you...” 1 Peter 3:15 (NRSV)
Celebrating Thomas B. Dozeman
By Anthony Le Donne, Professor of New TestamentThis year United Theological Seminary celebrated the career and ministry of Thomas B. Dozeman.
The internationally respected scholar and prolific author has anchored United’s Bible faculty for 34 years, teaching Introduction to Old Testament, Hebrew and other related classes.

Dr. Dozeman began at United in 1988 and was an integral part of the Core Group curriculum of the '80s and '90s. As such, he was connected to a small cohort of Master of Divinity students, contributing to their spiritual and educational development. As the senior member of the Bible faculty, Dr. Dozeman taught United’s Doctor of Ministry students and served as a faculty consultant for over 20 years. In these capacities, he was one of the student body’s favorite instructors. His classes breathed life into the sacred text and taught students to love Scripture.
During these years, Dr. Dozeman’s research (albeit complex, varied and extensive) focused on the Exodus tradition and the concept of holiness. The class he taught on “Holiness and Ministry” eventually became an Oxford University Press book titled, Holiness and Ministry: A Biblical Theology of Ordination. This book was dedicated to the United students who took the elective. Dr. Dozeman also served as a faculty mentor on several trips to Israel and Cambodia.
Tom gave study of the Old Testament a kind of life that I previously thought impossible and has instilled in me a lifelong passion for studying the Old Testament.
Chad Clark (MTS/MDiv '17) Assistant Dean for Student SuccessFor as long as I’ve been at United, Tom has been a model of excellence in scholarship and teaching.
David Watson Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Professor of New TestamentAs a colleague, Dr. Dozeman served as a shepherd for research, committee assignments and pedagogy. Dozens of junior colleagues benefited from his knowledge of the intricacies of higher learning and publication. While he could boast over 50 published works himself, he also deserves credit for many projects of his colleagues that benefited from his insights.
In July, Dr. Dozeman was granted the honorary Doctor of Divinity from United Theological Seminary. Never was that degree more well deserved.
I am forever appreciative for the support that Tom graciously offered at every season of my PhD journey. From reading through the book of Exodus using one of his old Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia bibles (that he later gifted to me) in preparation for an oral entrance interview at Hebrew Union, to recommending me to serve as a Lecturer in Old Testament at United as I worked through the dissertation phase of my PhD… Tom has been one of my biggest cheerleaders. His mastery of the disciplines needed to research, write, and deliver volumes of commentaries and articles that were respected by the academy, while delivering relevant and thought-provoking lectures appreciated by the students, modeled the professor I aspired to be.
Vanessa Ward (MATS, '91) former Lecturer of Biblical Studies at United“I thank God for sending Dr. Tom Dozeman to teach at United since he inspired generations of pastors to become better preachers and teachers of the Bible in their own congregations and brought recognition to United through his many academic presentations around the world and his outstanding books and articles. In the past six years Tom Dozeman has become a friend and a mentor and we will miss his inspiring leadership at United.
Kent Millard PresidentMay the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
I won’t be able to fully express the impact Tom had on my own thinking and formation here at United.
Celebrating Jerome P. Stevenson, Sr.
Jerome P. Stevenson, Sr. retired June 30, 2022, and was honored at the May 2022 Commencement service as Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Care. Upon receiving this recognition, Dr. Stevenson reflected on his beginnings on the south side of Birmingham, Alabama, where he recalled people asking, “can anything good come off of the south side?” From that tough community, only he and one other friend went on to higher education.
For the first 40 years of his working life, says Dr. Stevenson, he worked secular jobs that he “had” to do. In the last 40 years, he has been blessed to choose. Upon moving to Dayton to retire in 2007, Jerome was introduced to United Theological Seminary by living next door to David Watson, the Academic Dean. “It was a God thing,” he says. Eight months later, he was working at United as a mentor in the doctoral program, and then onto full-time faculty status as Assistant Professor in the Practice of Pastoral Care and Counseling.
Reflecting upon the time when he was called into ministry at Gospel Temple Baptist Church in Detroit, he remembers the wise advice received from his pastor: “Humble yourself and let God exalt you.” Over the last 14 years, Dr. Stevenson has exemplified this spirit of servant leadership at United.

The Shepherd’s Fund
United is pleased to have recently partnered with The Shepherd’s Fund to serve and bless retired alumni/ae and their spouses by providing financial assistance when a medical or other crisis creates a hardship.
The Shepherd’s Fund was founded with the vision of helping those who have faithfully served Christ and the Church when health issues impact their ability to pay their medical bills or household expenses.

Through this fund, United alumni/ae and their spouses may qualify for a one-time assistance grant of up to $10,000 each in a calendar year. They may also be eligible to receive the grant in subsequent years, especially in the event of chronic, ongoing medical conditions.
The following United graduates and their spouses are eligible to apply for an assistance grant from The Shepherd’s Fund:
• Retired pastors and spouses of any denominational affiliation
• Surviving spouses of retired pastors
• Pastors with disabilities who are unable to perform ministerial duties, but not yet of retirement age
• Retired pastors and spouses who are legal guardians of adult children with a disability
• Retired pastors who are legal guardians for their grandchildren who may have a disability or medical condition, regardless of age
So far, this fund has been an answer to prayer for several United alumni/ae. Our hope is that it will be a blessing to many more faithful leaders who have blessed so many in the faith.
Elders who are leading well should be admired and valued. Double up on the honor shown them; care for them well — especially those constantly and consistently teaching the word and preaching.

Donor Spotlight: Serena Wolfe (MDiv '18)
Serena Wolfe has been part of appointed ministry in The United Methodist Church since 2015. After graduating with her Master of Divinity in 2018, she is now beginning the Doctor of Ministry program through the “Living the Historic faith” focus group, while pastoring a two-point charge in the West Ohio Conference.

“The education I received at United provided me with more than a theological education and practical knowledge for ministry. The faculty and staff invested in me as a disciple of Jesus Christ and guided me in my own spiritual development,” she explains.
It is for this reason that Serena is committed to giving back and contributing to the ongoing work of United. Serena and her husband choose to give monthly not only for the convenience but also because “[it] allows us to be faithful and consistent in our support.”
When Serena receives her letter from United thanking her for her monthly giving, she is reminded that she is part of a bigger movement of God, a place of hope where the seeds of the gospel are tended in the hearts of students to carry the hope of salvation into the world.
“The Holy Spirit is still active in the ministry of United,” she says. “A common Lord, a common community, and a common mission filled with hope.”
Did you know United has a monthly giving club?
Dozens of men and women give monthly to United in amounts ranging from $5 to $1,000 per month. These gifts add up to astounding impact! They truly sustain the Seminary on an ongoing basis and allow us to be committed to investing in our students with scholarships. When you join our monthly giving club by setting up a recurring donation, you are extending United’s ability to empower students to walk in their God given calling without the burden and worry of sinking into debt.

Honor and Memorial Gifts
United Theological Seminary welcomes gifts “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones and persons who played significant roles in the lives of people. This offers the donor the opportunity not only to honor or memorialize a loved one, but also to receive a charitable deduction and support the seminary’s mission. The following are the gifts so designated and received by United during the period of July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022. Gifts have been made in memory or in honor of names in bold. The donors for those gifts are listed under each name.
