What Does It Mean to Be Set Free?

What does it mean to be set free? This fall, United Theological Seminary has been digging into that topic during our worship and chapel services. In this report, we also want to lift up some students and alumni/ae who are working to set people free in Jesus’ name.

Whether it’s freedom from addiction, from the status quo or from financial constraints, we each experience liberation in God who set us free through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As we are set free, God gives us the opportunity to extend that freedom to others.

We also give thanks to God for each one of the donors listed here in the report and others who have chosen to remain anonymous. They have given for scholarships to set our students free from the burden of student loans. They have given to Burn the Mortgage to set United free from debt. They have given for special projects that have enabled United to continue to prepare faithful, fruitful leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ for generations to come.

I love the Advent scripture from Isaiah 22:22: “I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” Whatever you are facing in your own lives, we pray that you would experience that great gift of freedom as well. May God open new doors for you in this season.

Friends:

George Matheson, a blind Scottish pastor of the 19th century, saw this truth better than most seeing people. From his own suffering, he realized that, unless he could completely surrender his life into the hands of our loving God, he would be enslaved by his resentment at going blind. He surrendered everything, even his blindness, into the hands of God and discovered real spiritual freedom and joy in his life.

Matheson wrote a hymn asking God to “make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free.” And “My will is not my own till Thou hast made it thine.”

He learned through Scripture and his own life experience that when he totally surrendered his sufferings, his will, his desires and his expectations into the hands of God, he could become free of resentment and discouragement.

Jesus once put it this way: “Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin ... If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed” (John 8:34, 36). He demonstrated that true freedom when he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, “Not my will but thine be done.”

The truth about life is that it is only when we surrender to God our ego, our desire for control and our self-serving ways that we will find true freedom, joy and meaning in life.

We often live with the mistaken belief that if we are in control of the people and situations around us, then we will enjoy freedom and peace. We think that getting whatever we want when we want it will bring us happiness and joy. We frequently allow our ego to run our lives and then wonder why we experience such anguish and pain.

When I am anxious about something, I practice this simple exercise that helps me let go and surrender my concerns to God. I sit quietly and breathe deeply. I place my hands in my lap palms up. I imagine taking all of my anxieties and concerns out of my mind and placing them in my hands. I put in my hands my concerns about each of my family members. Persons I know who are struggling with illness. United Theological Seminary. The United Methodist Church. The United States of America.

When I have placed all my concerns into my hands, I then imagine that the hands of God are beneath me. I turn my hands over and release all of my concerns into the loving hands of God. When I can let everything go, I feel a deep sense of freedom and peace.

As long as we are slaves to the sins of control and manipulation to get our own way, we are slaves to sin. When we confess our sins and surrender ourselves to God, we experience forgiveness, love and freedom. Thanks be to God for his amazing grace.

Introducing United’s New Master of Arts The flexible program gives students freedom to design their own degree, with learning that fits their lifestyle.

This fall, United introduced a new master’s degree, designed with flexibility in mind. The Master of Arts (MA) is a customizable 36-hour degree program, available fully online, on-campus or in any combination (see sidebar).

Featuring 33 hours of electives and a 3-credit capstone colloquy, the flexible curriculum supports a variety of ministry and career paths:

United’s flexible learning options make highquality education accessible for working pastors and other professionals. Courses are available in five formats so students can mix and match to suit their learning styles and schedules.

• Specialization in an area of expertise for religious or secular vocations

• Dayton courses meet on-campus regularly throughout the semester.

• Preparation for ministry in the world as an educated leader

• LIVE (Live Interactive Virtual Education) brings distance students into the classroom via video conference in courses that meet simultaneously with on-campus classes.

• Personal growth through deeper understanding of the Christian faith

Learning that Fits Your Lifestyle

A structured curriculum is available for students who wish to earn a degree while completing The United Methodist Church’s Advanced Course of Study, a pathway for licensed local pastors to pursue ordination as an elder in The UMC. Licensed local pastors who have completed the Basic Course of Study can meet the educational requirements for elders orders after completing the Advanced Course of Study through the MA. The Advanced Course of Study coursework in the MA includes 36 hours in biblical studies, church history, theology and United Methodist denominational studies.

Suggested curricula are also available for those who want to pursue General Theological Studies or a focus in Biblical Studies.

• Online courses allow students to engage in weekly discussions, assignments and other forms of coursework at any time of the day or night to complete scheduled assignments.

• January Intensive courses enable students to complete one course during a five-day Gathering Week on campus in January, with pre- and post-work online.

• Summer Hybrid courses, offered in June and August, allow students to complete up to two courses at the same time during a fiveday Gathering Week on campus, with preand post-work online.

Whether MA students choose to design their own degree plan, pursue the Advanced Course of Study or follow a suggested curriculum, United’s new flexible MA provides freedom to choose a path that supports their call in Christ.

On May 17, 2019, United Theological Seminary dedicated the “West Wing” to the glory of God and in honor of Dr. William (Bill) and Mrs. Carole West of Memphis, TN, and in memory of their parents Dr. Tom and Mrs. Margaret West and Mr. Kemmons and Mrs. Dorothy Wilson. The “West Wing,” which is technically the south end of the building, houses the Seminary’s academic offices and classrooms.

Carole is the daughter of Kemmons Wilson, the innovative founder of Holiday Inn, who saw the need for a familyfriendly hotel chain as he traveled the country. Carole met and married a man with a similar passion for finding creative solutions to help people.

After losing his mother to breast cancer, Bill founded the West Cancer Center and Research Institute to provide world-class cancer treatment and research capabilities in his hometown of Memphis, TN.

Now focusing on preventative treatments, Bill is taking healthcare to the patients through mobile clinics and nutritious meal options to promote long-term health.

Carole served on United’s Board of Trustees from 1991 to 1999. She and Bill have given generously to the Seminary over the years, most notably to support United’s move to its current campus and now to help United become debt free through the Burn the Mortgage campaign. Their generosity has been foundational in securing a strong future for United to prepare faithful, fruitful leaders to make disciples of Jesus Christ for years to come.

“Dr. Bill and Mrs. Carole West have been exceedingly generous in the way they live their lives, always caring for those around them,” says President Kent Millard. “We thank God for Bill and Carole!”

It wasn’t intended to be permanent, but more than a decade later, the sign remained. Guests frequently missed the seminary even when they were looking for it, and many in the community had never heard of United despite driving past the campus regularly.

Welcome to United!

Thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Louise Rhodenbaugh of Cincinnati, OH, United now has a better way to welcome people to campus.

In August 2018, Joe visited the campus for the first time. He was impressed by what he encountered inside… students passionate about learning and growing in their capacity to pastor and lead, worship and community that gave God glory, and

a long-standing history going back nearly a century and a half.

He was surprised by the simple sign, and asked if we’d ever considered doing something more substantial.

We had, but with other funding needs demanding attention, it was never made a priority. Joe saw an opportunity to contribute. Several months later, at the entrance of United’s campus, stand the beautiful brick signs you see here, a testament to the nearly 150-year legacy of United and a commitment to the future . Positioned at an angle, like arms open to welcome guests with an embrace, our hope is they will be a visible invitation to all who enter for years to come.

This past year, three United trustees hosted gatherings to introduce new friends to United. One of those was trustee Phillip Connolly who, with his wife Sarah, hosted “An Evening of Hope.” These two have a gift for hospitality and helping people make new connections.

“When we find a restaurant or movie we like, we tell all our friends,” Phillip explained. “This [gathering] gave us

an opportunity to share something with our friends that makes a big difference in the future of our church and share how they can be a part.”

Becoming Debt Free Dr. Jim Holsinger, United Trustee, has a mission to see United become debt free. Every year, $400,000 of United’s budget goes to principal and interest payments. Paying off the mortgage through the Burn the Mortgage campaign will save the Seminary $1.2 million in principal and interest payments over the next three years, freeing up those funds for student scholarships!

Jim and his wife, Barbara, are personally invested in seeing the Burn the Mortgage campaign through to the end. That’s why they issued a $100,000 challenge gift this past spring. They want not only to give themselves but to encourage others to give as they are able — whether that means $100,000 or $1,000, $5,000, or $500,000! Every gift helps move United toward the goal of being completely debt free by its 150th anniversary on Oct. 11, 2021.

We started the Burn the Mortgage campaign in 2016 with $3.9 million to pay off. Thanks to generous donors and the sale of extra property, $1.9 million has been given or committed, and only $2 million remains. Will you join us in praying and giving as you are able?

Rev. Wilson A. Shearer, Hagerstown, MD, celebrated 65 years of marriage to Marilyn on Aug. 29, 2019. This year also marked the 65th anniversary of his ordination as Elder in the Pennsylvania Annual Conference of the EUB Church. His 42 years of service include 28 years as a local church pastor, four years on conference program staff in youth ministry and camping, six years as district superintendent and four years as assistant to the bishop.

Rev. Harvey Smith, Centerville, OH, was recognized for his dedication, service and impact in the community with this year’s award from the Centerville Washington Foundation, at the organization’s 15th Annual Community Founders event.

Chaplain William John “Jack” Kouth, Omaha, NE, and wife, Mary Sue, welcomed their first greatgrandchild and 11th grandchild.

Jack is an Honorary Life Member in The Association of Professional Chaplains and Supervisor Emeritus in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc.

Class of 1973

Rev. Chuck Hindman, Walla Walla, WA, serves as Chair of the Walla Walla Alliance for the Homeless. This program has been acknowledged throughout the state of Washington for innovative efforts to provide shelter for about 45 people a night.

Chuck credits his experience as a seminary student at United with igniting a life-long passion for working with low-income groups facing a variety of challenges. Following his retirement from local church leadership in 2011, he has been able to find new opportunities to minister in this area. He encourages other retirees, “Bottom line: Careers end, but calling often doesn’t. For those of us… with an ongoing desire to serve, doors continue to open.”

Mr. David Vetter, Marquette, NE, was the feature of the documentary film Dreaming of a Vetter World (2019).

The documentary focuses on the story of the Vetter family, pioneering organic farmers in Marquette, NE.

Class of 1994

Ms. Sally Carpenter, Moorpark, CA, was a presenter for the 2019 season of the University Series, an adult education program for Lent that serves parishes in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Sally is in her fourth year of writing the Roots of Faith column for the Acorn Newspapers in Agoura Hills, CA. She serves as a lector at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Moorpark.

Class of 2004

Rev. Dr. Brice Thomas (DMin, 2015), Nashville, TN, and the congregation of Holy Trinity Community Church have received local and national recognition for their work around helping people recover from religious trauma, including coverage in the New York Times (Feb. 5, 2019). Brice says, “I’m thankful for the prophetic voice that I was taught to proclaim in seminary and in my denomination.”

Rev. Warren Kirk, West Harrison, IN, set out with the goal of sending 1,000 Bibles overseas. Less than four years later, he has sent more than 10,000.

Rev. Dr. Michael Scott Sr., Kalamazoo, MI, hosted the Kerygma Clinic for Preaching at Galilee Baptist Church, where he serves as senior pastor.

Dr. James A. Morris, Texarkana, TX, received the prestigious Professional Award from the Greater Texarkana Branch of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). James is an adjunct professor at Texarkana College.

Rev. Dr. Richard “Dick” North, Portsmouth, OH, is now in his 13th year of serving as chaplain of Hill View Retirement Center in Portsmouth.

Along with other staff members, he is presently engaged in working with residents who struggle with various forms of dementia.

Rev. Dr. James Levi Guthrie Jr., Valdosta, GA, published both the redacted version and his full doctoral thesis in early 2019. Two more books are in the works at present.

Ms. Amy Winnie, Northville, NY, was appointed to her first full-time appointment in the Adirondack District of the Upper New York Conference of The UMC.

RETIREMENTS Rev. Vanessa ’91 and Dr. Daryl Ward, former president of United (1993-95), retired after 33 years of pastoral leadership at Omega Baptist Church, Dayton, OH. Their son, Rev. Joshua Ward ’14, was installed as Omega’s new pastor on Sept. 22, 2019.

Outstanding Doctor of Ministry Alumna Rev. Dr. Sandra Coley ’14 received the Outstanding Doctor of Ministry Alumnus/a Award. After the death of her son, Demetris, she witnessed the impact of his decision to be an organ donor. She uses her Doctor of Ministry work to bring the church, transplant agencies and community leaders together to breakdown barriers of mistrust within the African American community and increase awareness of organ donation.

Effective Ministry Award Rev. Dr. Brad Kalajainen ’99 is the founding and lead pastor of Cornerstone UMC in Grand Rapids, MI. Cornerstone has experienced continual growth over 29 years, and now sees about 2,650 in worship every week. The church is involved in helping to break the cycle of poverty in their community and in global outreach around the world.

Dr. Charles E. Booth died on March 23, 2019, in Columbus, OH. Dr. Booth was a member of United’s Board of Trustees (2011-2019), 1990 alumnus of United’s Doctor of Ministry program, and beloved pastor of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church (Columbus, OH).

A renowned preacher and teacher of the Gospel, he traveled around the world as a guest preacher and lecturer. In 2011, he established the Charles E. Booth Preaching Conference to provide teaching and training on prophetic preaching.

Dr. Booth was the author of Bridging the Breach: Evangelical Thought and Liberation in the AfricanAmerican Preaching Tradition (Urban Ministries, 2000), The Prophetic Voice: Words for Today (2011), and Stronger in my Broken Places; Claiming a Life of Fullness in God (2014).

Dr. McCabe was highly respected by his colleagues for his professionalism, deep knowledge of Christian liturgy and commitment to students. Those who knew him will miss his dry wit and unqualified support for the other members of the seminary community.

Dr. McCabe was a frequent speaker, consultant and contributor for projects related to worship, preaching and the liturgical arts. An ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, he pastored several churches and was engaged in the camp-meeting circuit and The National College of Preachers prior to his tenure at United. He also taught at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, and at The University of St. Andrews in Scotland where he received his PhD. United continues to honor Dr. McCabe through the Kendall K. McCabe Award in Preaching, awarded annually since 2013 to a senior master’s student for a sermon exemplifying preaching as a liturgical act.

In 2016, United recognized Dr. Booth’s contributions with the Distinguished Ministry Award. The Seminary continues to honor his legacy through the Booth Scholarship Fund, providing financial support to future generations of pastors and preachers.

For more than 30 years, Dr. McCabe served United Theological Seminary, first as Professor of Homiletics and Worship (1980-99), then as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean (1999-2005). Following his tenure as dean, he taught as Professor of Evangelization in the Heisel Chair until his retirement in 2012.

Thomas Dozeman, Professor of Old Testament, contributed the translation of Joshua for a forthcoming update of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) scripture translation of the Bible. He also has several forthcoming articles and essays on topics related to the Hebrew Bible, including examinations of Joshua and Numbers. Dr. Dozeman serves on the editorial boards of Ancient Israel and Its Literature Monograph Series, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly and Horizons in Biblical Theology.

Lisa Hess, Professor of Practical Theology and Contextual Ministries, offered a plenary address, “Conscious Feminine Leadership,” for United’s Spring 2019 Doctor of Ministry intensive on Women in Christian Leadership, bringing some of her research and community development work into focus for ecclesial transformation and personal awakening. She held the first week of a Conscious Feminine Leadership training this summer, companioning women leaders in circle-way practices and deepening spiritual transformation.

Her next book weaves these strands in a theopoetic fashion — spiritual transformation, conscious feminine leadership, bringing the circle-way into communities receptive to its wisdom.

Dr. Hess will be teaching on her last book, A Companionable Way, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dayton this fall.

Luther Oconer, Associate Professor of United Methodist Studies, was elected the 2nd Vice President of the Wesleyan Theological Society, a society dedicated to the academic study of the early Methodist movement. During the Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church in February 2019, Dr. Oconer presented on “Unity and Holiness” during the Filipino United Methodists for Scriptural Holiness dinner for Philippines Central Conference delegates.

Andrew Park, Professor of Theology and Ethics, was a co-keynote speaker (with Dr. Eric Law) at the annual convention of the Intercultural Ministry Network of the Northern Regions of the United Church of Canada (UCC) in Edmonton, Canada, in October 2019. He also was the main speaker for the Korean Canadian Ministers and Lay Leaders Gathering for the Western Regions of the UCC, where he presented on wholeness and healing.

Joni Sancken, Associate Professor of Homiletics, was a keynote speaker at the “What’s New in Preaching” conference in Toronto, Canada, where she lectured on the topic of preaching and trauma. She was the featured speaker at United’s Summer Preaching Seminar focused on trauma-aware ministry. In October 2019, she was the keynote speaker at the Toronto Preaching Festival, preaching during festival worship and at the Metropolitan United Church, lecturing on the topic “Preaching in a Disenchanted World,” leading a workshop on “Trauma-Sensitive Exegesis for Preaching,” and leading a master class for preachers.

David Watson, Academic Dean and Associate Professor of New Testament, was the conference teacher for the 2019 Central Texas Annual Conference, speaking on the topic “Scripture and the People Called United Methodists.” He also published an article called “The Life of Sean” in Touchstone (Jan/Feb 2019).

United Welcomes New Director of Contextual Ministries Rev. Dr. Madeline Carasco Henners ’19 joined United as Director of Contextual Ministries in July 2019. Dr. Henners is a United Methodist elder in the Rio Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. She is a graduate of Southwestern University, Duke University and United’s Doctor of Ministry program, in which she completed her thesis on the role of retreats in spiritual formation.

Peter Bellini, Associate Professor of Evangelization in the Heisel Chair, was a featured speaker at several events in the last year, including the Spirit and Truth Conference in March 2019, the Aldersgate Renewal Ministries annual conference in July 2019, and United’s Fall 2019 Doctor of Ministry intensive on Global Christianity.

Scott Kisker, Professor of the History of Christianity, taught on Methodist ecclesiology, discipleship and band meetings at several events, including the Wesley Forum at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown, PA, and in chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary.

Since the twelfth century, theologians have found a counterfactual question irresistible: “If Adam had not sinned, would the Son have become incarnate?” Most modern commentators on the question reference the classic disagreement between those who follow Thomas Aquinas and those who follow John Duns Scotus. If Adam Had Not Sinned is a study of the medieval debates over the motive for the incarnation, from Anselm of Canterbury to John Duns Scotus. Detailing the larger context within which Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus developed their influential responses, If Adam Had Not Sinned comes to the surprising conclusion that the responses of Thomas and Scotus are substantially reconcilable.

Joni Sancken, Associate Professor of Homiletics Words that Heal: Preaching Hope to Wounded Souls (Abingdon, April 2019) Soul wounds are pervasive in our world, with a range of origins and characteristics. The field of trauma theory provides tools to unpack the dynamics associated with these wounds. Preaching with empathy for wounded souls can help with healing. Using the stories of wounded biblical figures is helpful, as is addressing the wounds that have been caused by the church. Words that Heal showcases worship practices, sermons and ministries that are actively engaged in supporting healing for those with wounded souls.

Alumna Spotlight: Suzan Johnson Cook, ’90 Dr. Johnson Cook later became the first and, to date, only female president of the historic Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, the largest gathering of African American clergy in the world. In 2011, President Barack Obama appointed her U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom — the first woman, African American and pastor to hold the position. Her responsibility was to protect religious freedom globally, with 199 countries in her portfolio.

When Rev. Johnson Cook entered United’s Doctor of Ministry program in 1987, she joined the first class of fellows to study under the mentorship of Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor. This past January, Dr. Johnson Cook returned as a featured preacher during the Doctoral Intensive focused on Women in Christian Leadership.

Every step in her journey prepared her for the next. She has learned that in order to move to the next level in a career, ministry or faith, you must learn not only to listen for God but to act in God’s time.

Suzan Johnson Cook has been blazing a trail throughout her career, breaking down barriers and making a way for others. Best of all she gives God all the glory.

Rev. Dr. Ambassador Suzan Johnson Cook’s career has been one of firsts. At the age of 26, Dr. Johnson Cook became the first female pastor of the oldest Baptist church in Manhattan, making her the first African American woman to serve as a pastor in the American Baptist Association. She served as the first female chaplain to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), a role she held for 21 years, ministering in the wake of 9/11 and bridging relations between the NYPD and New York’s diverse communities.

With a gift for making connections and building relationships, Dr. Johnson Cook became known as “America’s Chaplain.”

“God says build bridges,” Dr. Johnson Cook says. “Build relationships. Because somebody has to make the call.

Somebody has to open the door. Somebody has to make an introduction.”

“Do something with what you’ve got,” she told students, “because God rewards faithfulness.”

She also recognizes the importance of seeking God’s vision: “Trailblazers don’t look at what the picture is now.

They look at what it can be.”

Dr. Johnson Cook is quick to recognize all the people God placed across her path to open doors for her, many of whom were older men. Some were African-American, others were Caucasian. Some held similar beliefs, others the complete opposite, but they recognized God’s calling on her life and the way she lived with integrity.

As she spoke to current doctoral students, she emphasized the need for prayer, a strong support network, self-care and persistence, especially in seasons of adversity.

“I’ve been in many places you’ve not, but you will be in places others are not. Every one of us is set apart,” reminds Dr. Johnson Cook.

Dr. Johnson Cook left students with a powerful charge to steward the anointing God has given each one of them, quoting the Ashanti proverb, “The responsibility of power is like holding an egg. Grasp it too tightly and it will drip through your fingers; hold it too loosely and it will drop and break.”

As Dr. Johnson Cook paved the way for others, may we continue to do likewise, bravely following God wherever and whenever God calls.

Student Spotlight: Thomas Andrew

Thomas Andrew, MD, a renowned forensic pathologist, has witnessed the high cost of addiction, and he wants to see people set free.

For 20 years, Thomas Andrew, MD, served as Chief Medical Examiner for the State of New Hampshire.

During that time, he witnessed an increase of nearly 1,000 percent in the number of drug-related deaths as the opioid crisis took hold across the United States. He was responsible for counting the costs of an epidemic of addiction, and he knew it was far too high. The opioid crisis brought into sharper focus for Thomas the need for action — for ministry.

In addition to his work as a forensic pathologist, Thomas has long been involved in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), where he regularly encounters at-risk youth. He began to sense a call to chaplaincy through the BSA, where he could serve, not at the end of the public health spectrum, but at the very beginning: in prevention.

Today Thomas is pursuing a path to ministry as a deacon in The United Methodist Church. He is currently preparing to enter his fifth semester in United’s Master of Divinity (MDiv) program.

“United’s approach and philosophy is in line with the way I understand Wesleyan theology and its application in the real world,” Thomas says. “When I looked at the possibility of an online MDiv and saw the immense flexibility that United offered, it was a no-brainer for me.”

Encountering different cultural backgrounds and denominational viewpoints within the Christian faith at United has also been valuable to Thomas’s work within the interfaith environment of scouting. Thomas serves as chair of the Duty to God Committee (which focuses on reverence, the 12th point of scout law) of the Daniel

Webster Council of the BSA. This diverse group consists of Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Protestant Christians, as well as Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist members.

“Working in an interfaith environment is made much less intimidating by working in the diverse environment that is offered at United,” Thomas says.

Thomas is also pursuing chaplaincy ministry along the Appalachian Trail, which extends 2,190 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Mount Katahdin, Maine.

Recognizing that motivations for those hiking the Appalachian Trail include spiritual emptiness, personal crises and addiction, Thomas hopes to provide spiritual support to hikers traveling the segment of the trail that runs through his home state of New Hampshire: “A chaplaincy presence on the trail could help set those people free.”

As he continues to follow God’s call, Thomas draws strength from Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” It reminds him that the ends of ministry are far bigger than the individual carrying it out. “We are,” he says, “part of something far greater than ourselves.”
