*THE ACADEMIC PROCESSIONAL

*OPENING SENTENCES Dr. Tesia Mallory, Dean of the Chapel

Alleluia! Christ is risen! CHRIST IS RISEN INDEED. ALLELUIA! Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory in our Lord Jesus Christ. TO HIM WHO SITS ON THE THRONE AND TO THE LAMB BE PRAISE AND HONOR AND GLORY AND POWER, FOR EVER AND EVER! [1 Cor. 15:57] [Revelation 5:13]

*HYMN , Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Verse 1

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

Verse 2

All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

Verse 3

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, well-spring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our brother, all who live in love are thine; teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Verse 4

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began; love divine is reigning o’er us, binding all within its span. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife; joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

*OPENING COLLECT Dr. Elvin Sadler, Associate Dean for Doctoral Studies

Let us pray together.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

[Book of Common Prayer, Ascension Day Collect]

*HYMN God of Grace and God of Glory

Verse 1

God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy pow’r; crown thine ancient Church’s story, bring her bud to glorious flow’r. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.

Verse 2

Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways. Fears and doubts too long have bound us free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage for the living of these days, for the living of these days.

*DISMISSAL AND BLESSING

Verse 3

Cure thy children’s warring madness; bend our pride to thy control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal, lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal.

Verse 4

Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore; let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage serving thee whom we adore, serving thee whom we adore.

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever.

Amen.

[Ephesians 3:20-21]

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.

Amen. [2 Corinthians 1:14]

Biography of Speakers

Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton was elected to the episcopacy in 2004 by the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference of The United Methodist Church. He is currently the Resident Bishop of the New York Area, which includes the New York Conference in the Northeastern Jurisdiction. In addition to his episcopal assignments, he is President of the Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church.

Tom is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College (BA degree in Sociology/Psychology), a graduate of Duke University Divinity School (MDiv), and a graduate of United Theological Seminary (DMin).

Tom was ordained elder in the West Virginia Annual Conference by Bishop William Boyd Grove in 1985. Following seminary, he served the Perry Memorial UMC in Shady Spring, West Virginia, for six years. During his time there the congregation grew from an average worship attendance of fifteen to 150. He then spent the next nine years serving as the Senior Pastor of Forrest Burdette Memorial UMC in Hurricane, West Virginia. During his tenure there, the congregation grew from 575 members to nearly 1,400. In 1998, he became the District Superintendent of his home area, the Northern District. He had just begun his seventh year as District Superintendent when the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference elected him to the episcopacy in 2004.

Tom was first elected to Jurisdictional Conference at the age of 30 in 1988 and again in 1992. He was first elected to General Conference in 1996 and then to successive General Conferences in 2000 and 2004. He twice served as the Head of the West Virginia delegation. He served on the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women (1976-1980), the General Commission on Archives & History (1980-1988), and the General Commission on United Methodist Communications (2000-2004).

He enjoys golf, movies, professional baseball and football, college basketball, and travel opportunities with his family.

Sally Forbes and Tom Bickerton were married on August 16, 2003. They have four children: Elizabeth Anne, Thomas James II (“T.J.”), Ian Robert, and Nicholas Bruce.

Justin Cason is a graduate of the United Class of 2019. He is madly in love with Jesus, his beautiful wife Sarah, and two girls, Alaina and Chloe. He is passionate about reaching people for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and doing anything short of sin to bring people back into relationship with God. In following this, he has been exploring on-line and digital presence for Jesus to reach those afraid, hurt, or disillusioned with the traditional church. He doesn’t believe this to be an either-or but a both-and exploration. He longs for all communities to have phygital ministry!

Similar to the printing press, voice amplification, and the organ, Justin believes that innovation is not something to be excluded from the church, but instead something to be used to reach new people with the Gospel message. Through MUMC Online, The Couch Service, and Living Room Church VR, he seeks to use technology to connect digital natives to the God who loves them.

In his very little spare time, you might find him disc golfing, participating in ren faires, hanging out with his girls, or reading. He enjoys good conversation and helping others, so look him up if you want to discuss any of the above.

Reverend Vanessa Oliver Ward is the President of the Omega Community Development Corporation (Omega CDC) and Pastor Emerita of the Omega Baptist Church.

As President of the Omega CDC, she oversees the organization’s mission of providing services that help to develop and improve the lives of the youth, the families and the community of Northwest Dayton. Under her leadership, the Omega CDC served as co-developer with MVAH, aka Pivotal, in the construction of a 81-unit, $13 million dollar affordable senior housing facility, Omega Senior Lofts, and as developer of the $11 million dollar Hope Center for Families which focuses on 2-Generation whole family wellness in Northwest Dayton.

Partners of the Hope Center for Families include Dayton Children’s Hospital, Sinclair Community College, Mini University, and Omega CDC. Omega CDC was recently awarded a $28.7 million Promise Neighborhood Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which will serve as a major accelerator to the work Omega CDC has led, driving improved educational and social outcomes specifically for children and families in Northwest Dayton, where the need for investment is great.

Rev. Dr. Sheila Bouie-Sledge an ordained minister in The United Methodist Church (UMC), is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, where she is Senior Pastor of North Park United Methodist Church.

Her natural talents in speech and theater led her to study at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree and toured Europe in USO programs. She holds a master’s degree in Human Resources from St. Louis University, a Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary. She was a recipient of the Rosenbaum Fellowship of Transformative Kabbalah.

Prior to her appointment to North Park UMC, she served as Associate Pastor at Salem UMC in the Ladue community for twelve years. In this role, she established two new initiatives, The Many Faces of Fashion and Salem's Justice Ministry Team.

As her doctoral project at United Theological Seminary, she founded the non-profit organization "My Diversity Circle, LLC" in response to the 2014 Ferguson riots in St. Louis. "My Diversity Circle" promotes the creation of a circle of friends of various ethnic, racial, religious, age, and gender backgrounds.

Rev. Dr. Sledge served as the Chairperson for the Commission on Religion and Race (Values Team) for the Missouri Conference of The UMC. Additional work in justice ministry includes membership in Arts and Faith, a sub-committee of the Interfaith Partnership Inc. of St. Louis. Through her membership, she participates in partnerships across lines of religion while fostering understanding and respect of all ethnic communities.
