CELEBRATION: “People, Places, and Principles: 1870 - 2016” January 31, 2016, marks the day that the Capital Campaign for the recent renovation will be complete! This is a milestone in the life of our congregation. The final pledges will be collected, and we will launch a special, month-long celebration of the People, Places, and Principles that have brought us to today. Our celebration will commence at the Sunday Service on January 31. The Management Team, Board, Team 2016, and many others have arranged a special service filled with voices from our past and present. On the following weekend, February 7, come see a variety of photos and other artifacts from our church on display in the Gallery space. In addition, we will have a photo booth to take pictures of members and friends, a listening area for recorded sermons from the past, and a Story Space to record your stories for the future. We will have several other fun surprises as well.

We invite you to think this month on how far we’ve come and then, during the Cottage Meetings, to envision where we will go next. While we have all played a part in the efforts over the past several years, please share a special thank you with the Management Team - Christine Starr Davis, Kathy Disney, Megan McGuffey (Bob Haack, Linda Hellerich, Les Manns); the Treasurers - Hess Dyas, Mary Sommermeyer (Linda Ager, Mark Weddleton, Anne White); the Board - President Lindsay Bartlett, VicePresident Reed Maly, Secretary Molly Klocksin, Amy Birky, Rich Little, Jamie Radfcliffe, Leslie Ryan, Penny Urwiler, Kristi Wamstad-Evans (Charles Coley, Liz Bonney-Heermann, Priscilla Handy, Phyllis Higley, Dan Nelson, Cindy Maly, David Williams, Stephanie Geery-Zink); Rev. Fritz Hudson, Martha Horvay; and, of course, Team 2016 - Curt Donaldson, Tonya Haigh, Harry Heafer, Deb Hope, Les Manns, Peg Pelter, Becky Seth (Dan Nelson, Dan Dixon, Matt Bowers.)

WO RS H IP Woods Working: “Who, What, Where, When for February” How can it be February already? I just got here to Lincoln, NE a few weeks ago, right? Well, here we are, whether we are ready or not. One of the most powerful and interesting parts of the transition process for a congregation between ministers is the process of discovering who you are right now and, from that, discerning where you want to go. You will be celebrating the end of your capital campaign drive on January 31 and your history of “People, Places, and Principles” through the month of February. Do check out the amazing displays in the Gallery throughout the month. You may find some surprises.

those visions. We also now have five people committed to being Fair Witnesses, who will set aside their own agendas to figure out your shared vision: Hess Dyas, Deb Hope, Amy Miller, and Mark Weddleton, with BJ Wheeler serving as liaison for the Transition Team. Also, during the period from middle to late February, the Board and Nominating Committee will be phoning to discern whom you trust the most with the process of selecting your next minister: heady times! Please do respond to your invitations to participate. Everyone is needed.

Looking forward,

Of course, the Transition Team has already begun signing people up for Cottage Meetings from January 30 through March 6, so you can tell everyone your best visions, past and present, for the Unitarian Church of Lincoln. All are welcome and needed. More than 40 facilitators have been trained in Appreciative Inquiry to help us surface

Grief Group

Opening Spirituality

1st, 3rd and 4th Thursdays • February/March 7:00 - 9:00PM • Gathering Place

Saturday, February 27 • 10:30AM

Major life transitions are sources of grief, though not often acknowledged as such. This includes the death of a loved one, loss of a job, retirement, loss of health – so many different causes of grief. Anyone who feels the stress of grief is invited to join others with similar situations to join in a five session exploration of what one may expect during grief and skills that may assist in the navigation of the tumultuous seas of grief. This is not an ongoing support group, nor is it therapy. It is a very specific Adult Religious Growth and Learning Program. We will skip second Thursdays because of a prior commitment. All are welcome, and the group will close to newcomers on the third session.

Let’s actually experience at least four different approaches to experiencing your connection to what is ultimate in your life through various yogas or paths to union. We will need to be aware of childcare needs by Friday, February 19.

Native American/Celtic Spirituality Saturday, March 26 • 10:30AM

We can expand our understanding of spirituality radically through trying out different modalities for their compatibility with our own learning styles and access to our inner knowing. Let us know of childcare needs by Friday, March 18. Both of the above classes will be facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Gretchen Woods, a trained spiritual mentor and long-time eclectic practitioner of multiple yogas. Please bring a bag lunch. Juice, fruit and pastries will be provided. All are welcome.

NEWS NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Winter Sunset

A moment that only endures until, The Earth turns a bit more.

December 28, 2012 by Eric Williams

Without me, They are fulfilled, Established in their sanctity.

Driving north, To the Twin Cities, At sunset, In late December. Off to my left, The gentle slope of an empty cornfield, Covered in fresh snow. Just barely above it, A long, low, dark grey cloud, All along the western horizon. In between them, A thin band of dusty red, The last light of a short winter day. Together, Field, cloud, and Sun become, A Breath of a place,

Without them, I am not fully myself, Unformed by their brief beauty. In their eternal dance, The whirling reel of land and light, They bless me. While I can not add, Or subtract, From their gift, They are unsung. By seeing this moment, And remembering them, I join the Great Dance, And give a benediction.

UUA BOOKSTORE HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Turning Point: Essays on a New Unitarian Universalism, Edited by Frederic Muir In inspiring, fresh essays, 20 UU leaders issue a clarion call for change in the denomination. They show a way forward from an isolated, individualistic “iChurch” to an inclusive, multi-cultural Beloved Community. Outlining a bold vision for the future of Unitarian Universalism, these leaders implore us to collectively liberate ourselves from patterns that prevent us from becoming a robust faith for a new age. Emerging from a history marred by the errors of individualism, exceptionalism, and anti-authoritarianism. Unitarian Universalism faces a crossroads. Turning Point shows a way forward by embracing promises shaped from our theology: generosity, pluralism, and imagination. With essays that include the stories of creative new types of UU communities across the country, this essential new collection outlines a liberal faith for the twenty-first century. It offers a vision of Beloved Community and inspires trust that we can deepen and grow once again, meeting the aching needs of a new generation. www.uuabookstore.org Price: $14.00 6300 A St • Lincoln, NE 68510 • 402.483.2213 • unitarianlincoln.org

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Notes from the Transition Team submitted by B.J. Wheeler, Transition Team

We have been busy learning about the process Gretchen has set out for us to be prepared to call a new minister in the fall of 2017. One of our first steps as a congregation is to identify a mission within our community, a main theme or kind of service for which we are known. We will start with cottage meetings. What is a cottage meeting, a host, a facilitator, a fair witness, a mission? All of these are words we know but may have a new twist in the process, Gretchen is introducing to us. Gretchen reminded us in August that a covenant is how we treat ourselves and others within the church, a vision is how we live – what is important to us, and a mission is how we bring our vision out into the world. Mission was kind of a dirty word to me as I thought of missionaries as converting the heathen. But then we know that our missionaries are those of the UU Service Committee who specifically do not seek to convert or even recruit to our religion. So being a missionary, as so many things, does not have to have the connotations it has for other religions. It is how our principles call us to action. In the process of attracting a new minister to our church, we will be expected to be able to verbalize what our mission is. The cottage meetings are the beginning of deciding on a single mission that we as a congregation can bring to our community. This is a process of “meaning- making,” of living our principles. So we will start with cottage meetings (cottage as in small and homey). Cottage meetings will happen in our Open Circles, private homes, or in the church, after the service. Please sign-up for one after the service or by calling the office. Each cottage meeting will have a facilitator and a host, sometimes the same person. These will be gatherings for cozy conversations. Your facilitators have been trained with specific methods to facilitate these idea-gathering sessions and pass them on to a small group of fair witnesses. This is a group of five members who have been chosen for

their ability to identify themes in the ideas. They will collate the data received from the cottage meetings and come up with a main thing statement for our Annual General Meeting. We will have Town Halls to discuss and review the mission/main thing with the congregation before we vote. We need everyone’s input and besides these small groups will be fun. So do sign yourself up so we don’t have to call you. Transition Team: Wesley Botham, Jerry Petr, Becky Seth, Evelyn Weymouth (and me).

Notes from the Board of Trustees 1) Linda Ager has finished her service as coTreasurer, and the board has begun looking for someone to serve in this role alongside Hess Dyas. In June, the newly appointed co-Treasurer will transition to serve as the only Treasurer (responsibilities for this position are lessening as responsibilities have shifted to paid staff.) Anyone interested in this position should contact Board President, Lindsay bartlett.ljc@gmail.com 2) The board has created the “Cole Bequest Options Committee”, consisting of 7 members, that will research and present a range of options to the congregation for approval on how to use the sizable donation from Judy Cole, who gifted her estate, life insurance policy, and other funds to the church. 3) Amy Miller has been appointed Legal Counsel by the Board of Trustees. 4) The Board of Trustees has scheduled the following meetings: •Town Halls: April 10, 17, and May 1 •Special Congregational Meeting: April 24 •Spring Congregational Meeting: May 15 Content for these meetings will be announced later, including items eligible for absentee voting.

Foundation bequest

Did you know? A notebook is in the Church Kitchen with a complete inventory of all the items in the church and their locations? In this notebook also is a complete listing of all the table cloths for your use. Table cloths are sorted by sizes, colors and approximate locations in the church kitchen or in the cabinets near the fireplace.

The Unitarian Foundation Committee encourages members and friends to consider bequests to the Church, on behalf of the living and those honored with a memorial. Contributions can be in the form of memorial gifts, wills and trusts to support the church's continued liberal religious presence in Lincoln. Please contact the church office for details and federal tax ID number. Current members of the Unitarian Church Foundation are: Gene Hanlon, Harry Heafer, Norm Hostetler, Amy Miller, Barbara Pearson, Bruce Raymer and Alan Worth. Please feel free to ask them any questions regarding contributing or putting the Unitarian Foundation in your Will or Trust.

Did you know? The Church Kitchen Clean Up Crew meets weekly on Mondays at 11:45 to clean the Church Kitchen and then eat lunch together? It’s a bring your own lunch gathering. We can always incorporate more people who would enjoy kitchen cleaning and sorting, planning and implementing Church Kitchen projects. Did you know? A Church Kitchen Clean Up Crew has been meeting weekly since the Church Kitchen Renovation in 2008. If you would like more information or would like a copy of the complete SEARCHABLE inventory for your computer or if you have thoughts or ideas about how to improve the Church Kitchen, please feel free to contact Jackie Egan, Jack Furgason, Linda Brown, JoAnn Lanning, Mary Ann Petr, Carol Kendrick, Barbara Pearson, or Deb Bevard.

New Flooring for the Church Kitchen The church kitchen renovation in 2008 included many wonderful changes, but it did not include a new floor as the linoleum was only about eight years old and not ready for replacement. Now the floor is showing wear and we have been offered unsolicited funds to replace it. As a result, the Building Committee is in the process of reviewing bids, keeping in mind our green intentions and long-term wear and care. When that process is complete, a contractor (and aesthetically suitable product) will be chosen and the flooring installed over several days when it is least disruptive to events and activity already scheduled in the church. If you have questions about this process, please contact Property and Finance Coordinator, Christine Starr Davis chopestarr@icloud.com .

UU Women Gathering: Authenticity Authenticity requires vulnerability, transparency and integrity. Beloved UU author May Sarton wrote "We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be." Is vulnerability the same as weakness? Come prepared to be vulnerable as we gather to share a bit of ourselves with each other and this month's topic. The UU Women gathering meets once a month, on the first Saturday at 2:00PM. Rotating leaders choose the topic and location. This month’s gathering is being held on February 6 will be facilitated by LauraLee Woodruff on Authenticity. Readings on the topic have been provided in our Facebook group if you want to prepare; however, your thoughts are what we cherish! All UU women (members and friends) are welcome to participate. RSVP for the location, to be added to the Facebook Group or to the Email Reminder List. Contact the Church office admin@unitarianlincoln.org or E-mail LauraLee at holybear47@gmail.com

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Winter Lecture Series 2016: National Identity and the Politics of Nationalism All people are citizens of nation-states, but individual loyalties are sometimes more strongly attached to tribe, or to culture, race, religion, or even to regional entities such as the European Union. In turn those loyalties influence responses to issues from poverty to refugees, terrorism, wars, etc. Consider how such loyalties influence the refugee crisis in Germany, tribal and economic issues in Nigeria, religious politics in India, nationalism in Scotland, or the potential for democracy in Iraq, and how those loyalties influence ideas of 'American exceptionalism' or 'Russian exceptionalism.' All sessions will take place at the Unitarian Church, 6300 A Street. Each two hour session will begin at 7:00PM. The first hour of the first 5 sessions will feature a guest lecturer, followed by a brief refreshment period and then an audience-driven hour of questions and dialogue. The sixth session will be a panel discussion. All sessions are open to the public and free of charge.
