BUBBLES BURST IN THE BLUE LAGOON

Situated within one of the leading resort hotels in Europe, Moss Restaurant at The Retreat serves incredible reinventions of Icelandic cuisine. Recommended by the 2019 Michelin Guide and situated in the heart of the Iceland’s iconic and awe-inspiring Blue Lagoon, few dining venues can beat Moss for the wow factor.

On 5 October, the restaurant held a Champagne evening hosted by the founders of France’s legendary Boërl & Kroff Champagne, Patrick Sabaté and Stéphane Sésé.

The glittering gala also featured a 5-course tasting menu – conceived by Michelin-starred Icelandic chef Aggi Sverrisson – that explored and reimagined Iceland’s culinary heritage. Each dish was perfectly paired with a Boërl & Kroff vintage by Master Sommelier Clément Robert, creating a sublime gourmet experience born of the savory interplay between Iceland and France.

Throughout the evening, Patrick and Stéphane shared their passions, their discoveries, and their challenges in their quest for the ultimate Champagne.

Produced in France’s Aube Valley, Boërl & Kroff is one of the rarest Champagnes in the world. Patrick and Stéphane discovered the tiny vineyard in 1994, which had once produced a special varietal of pinot noir for extra dry wines favoured by Charles de Gaulle. Patrick and Stéphane decided to resurrect the vineyard and create the very finest Champagne. That, they achieved, with acclaimed vintages from just five releases to date, with each consisting of no more than 3,000 magnums.

Champagne aficionados agree that Boërl & Kroff is a luxury that has to sampled at least once in a lifetime.

The Champagnes were the perfect accompaniment to a menu created by Aggi Sverrison, Chef Patron and owner

of London’s famed Texture Restaurant and Champagne Bar, which has held a Michelin star for eight consecutive years. The Champagnes were paired by Master Sommelier Clément Robert, who is also in charge of wine buying for the Texture Restaurant Group.

“This is the first time in 25 years since we began producing our first vintage that a client of ours has provided the opportunity for their clients to taste – or drink (as the quantity offered was quite generous) Champagne Boërl & Kroff which is the rarest and most expensive ever, ” said Sabaté. “The pairing with food at Moss was outstanding and beyond all possible expectations.

Unforgettable. ”

With the Blue Lagoon as the ultimate atmospheric backdrop, this was an unforgettable evening of the highest gastronomic standards, with the Boërl & Kroff Champagne as the star attraction.

It’s hard to believe that the original Nobu restaurant is 25 years old, and even more remarkable to see how the concept has captured the global imagination while still offering those same high standards.

Nobu opened its doors in New York’s Tribeca in August 1994, after acclaimed chef Nobu Matsuhisa accepted an invitation from acting legend Robert De Niro to bring his unique take on Japanese fusion to the East Coast –having won plaudits for his Matsuhisa restaurant in Beverly Hills.

The rest, as they say, is history, but it’s unlikely anyone envisaged the empire that would extend across five continents, with international locations in cities including London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Milan, Dubai, Cape Town, Moscow, Monte Carlo, and São Paulo.

The global Nobu enterprise recently expanded to include Nobu Hotels with locations in Las Vegas, Manila, Miami,

Malibu, Palo Alto, Marbella, Ibiza, London, Cabo and Barcelona, with more to follow.

On a recent visit to the Big Apple, Unique enjoyed a fabulous evening at Nobu New York Fifty Seven – sister restaurant to the original – located on West 57th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue.

This is a special dining experience from the moment you are greeted by the sensational staff – knowledgeable and perfectly capable of guiding you expertly through the extensive menu.

Naturally, you must try Nobu’s signature black cod in miso (simply heavenly) as well as a selection of the finest sushi and sashimi you’ll find this side of Tokyo.

What we particularly like is that Nobu’s ‘classic’ dishes are retained on the menu, as well as new dishes simply labelled ‘now’. That means you’ll always be able to try that Black Cod with Miso, Lobster Wasabi Pepper, and Creamy Spicy Crab, while being able to try new creations

such as Wagyu Foie Gras Dumpling, Sea Bass Wasabi Miso, or Grilled baby Squid with Olive Oil Shiso.

Beef connoisseurs will delight in the Washu and Japanese (Miyazaki) Wagyu, sold by the ounce and served in a choice of style and sauces.

Not sure what to order? Put yourself in the hands of the chef with the Omakase Tasting Menus, which can also be paired with wine or traditional sake.

Executive Pastry Chef Michele Goldsmith has poured her heart and soul into a delightful dessert menu and on our visit, the exceptional general manager (he knows who he is) brought us the entire selection – which suited us just fine.

Nobu restaurants continue to receive unprecedented praise and rave reviews around the world 25 years on, and on this evidence, it is richly deserved.

THE RULES OF BLACK TIE

With a third season of The Crown released this season and the recent Downton Abbey movie, there is a part of us that yearns for the decorum and poise that comes with dressing for the occasion and the excuse to make an effort in the evening. Party season is almost upon us, so we say it is a great time to break out your Black Tie and enjoy an evening dressed up to the nines.

Black Tie worn well looks impeccable and dashing. Poorly or carelessly put together, however, and it looks sloppy and unflattering. When we talk about dress code, it infers rules, and as we were all told when growing up, “rules exist for a reason.”

Budd Shirtmakers has produced exceptional dress shirts, waistcoats, bows, jewellery and accessories for Black Tie wear for over a century. There is little they don’t know on the matter and they are a regular destination for costume designers and stylists when selecting for period dramas and formal attire.

Below, the expert team from Budd provides some advice to ensure your Black Tie is on point:

1. Never wear a winged collar shirt with Black Tie. It tends to be unflattering, reveals the tie band and belongs to the White Tie remit.

2. Invest the time in learning to tie your own bow tie, rather than opting for a pre-tied bow. It will have a softer and more elegant look to it, and shows care. It also provides ample satisfaction.

3. Match the silk of your bow to the lapel facings on your dinner jacket.

4. Experiment with dress studs and match them to your cufflinks. Budd’s own dress studs offer a novel detail that allows you to swap between mother of pearl buttons or studs.

5. Try out other dress shirt options. Beyond classic and fail-safe Marcella, ivory silk and voiles are a beautiful and luxurious touch, whilst pleated fronts add structure when a cummerbund or vest are absent.

6. Remember your pocket square and keep it white or ivory. It brings life to your dinner suit and helpfully, also broadens the chest.

7. Wear a pair of braces (or suspenders as they are known in the US) and never a belt.

8. Experiment with a cummerbund or backless silk vest for some vintage charm. These extra additions also create a more tidy appearance.

9. Keep socks black and shoes simple. A dress pump, slipper or Oxford will work best.

10. Keep things simple and novelty-free for perfect polish.

The Century Collection pays tribute to a founding father, but its design sits firmly in the present. The range of backpacks, briefcases, holdalls and luggage is lightweight and functional. These are perfect stand-alone bags or companion pieces. Their luxurious dyed leathers appeal to today’s style conscious man on the move with an eye for a contemporary classic.

Million Dollar Minerals

Naomi Sarna casts an expert and adoring eye over the incredibly diverse world of minerals

34 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 35

Imagine that you enter your favourite elegant and exquisitely decorated hotel when something catches your eye; a colourful, massive amethyst cathedral nine feet high. It's cave-like structure sparkles with the shimmer of luscious deep purple crystals spectacularly sprinkled with perfectly formed, luscious white calcite crystals.

Or you visit a friend's home, and as they welcome you in, one of the world’s largest and rarest mineral specimens is there, on display for guests to see. Naturally you would ask yourself, 'What could it be and why is it so special?'

As many of you have already observed, collectors and decorators have come to appreciate one of the most exciting new forms of art, one-of-a-kind, incredible to behold - exquisite mineral specimens from around the world!

Previously, to see these magnificent natural art forms, one had to go to a museum to view them or a specialised trade show. There, one could appreciate their beauty, but only wistfully imagine owning one. Today, there are galleries throughout the world that specialise in these earthgrown treasures. But, before we set out to visit our nearest gallery, let's take a moment to understand what is meant by 'minerals' and what makes them magnificent. To be considered a mineral, it must first and foremost be inorganic and crystalline in formation. Size does not necessarily infer quality whereas location is a crucial piece of information.

There is a special place in New York State where beautiful crystals formed thousands of years ago. The crystals were so clear that they were know

as 'diamonds', specifically Herkimer Diamonds. Many of these 'diamonds' formed inside pockets known as 'vugs'. Because the crystals are firmly attached inside the vugs, it requires a very delicate procedure to bring out a crystal, unbroken and still in the vug. This care pays off and the value of the mineral increases exponentially as a result.

An example of a huge mineral are the massive selenite crystals in Mexico, measuring up to 39 feet in length, 4 feet in diameter and weighing 55 tons! How did they come about? In scientific terms, they were formed when superheated water that was infused with mineral ions that subsequently cooled. Since this process is continuing even today, new crystals are ever forming.

36 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 37
38 | UNIQUE

If you're curious about small crystals, think about natural pink Himalayan salt, the kind you sprinkle on your dinner. This too is a mineral. By definition, it is naturally occurring, inorganic and crystalline in nature. No matter the size, both the selenite and salt are considered to be minerals.

No matter how the crystals formed, an important characteristic of mineral crystals is that they have flat planes or faces. In fact, on the molecular level, they look the same and grow in an orderly pattern. It's good to remember that the molecular construction will determine the ultimate shape of the crystal, no matter how large it grows, but different combinations of chemicals involved in their formation explain the seemingly infinite variety found in the world today.

For example, if we look at quartz, we can appreciate that it may form as clear

quartz, amethyst, smoky quartz, rose quartz, citrine or even a combination of amethyst and citrine known as ametrine. The presence of what are called trace minerals, (like titanium, iron, or manganese) add colour. Additionally, the colour can be affected by how consistent or erratic the crystal growth may be. Shinning a light through the crystal helps to magnify this effect.

A highly sought-after mineral specimen has very distinct and specific qualities: rarity of the mineral, size, condition of the 'faces', depth of colour and any other minerals that may be formed together with the specimen. A spectacular specimen can be small but if the faces are perfect, without chips on the edges and it has great colour, it can be considered quite special. You may collect small, micro specimens that need magnifying glasses to examine them, but if that is the only size they occur in nature, know that the tiniest specimens can be magnificent in their perfection.

New collectors are not always aware that mines producing these rarities often have a limited amount of minerals that can be considered to be of outstanding quality. An example: several years ago there were huge calcite plate clusters, measuring about 18 inches in diameter, from China for sale in Tucson at the annual Tucson Gem Show (the world’s largest Gem, Mineral and Fossil extravaganza held each year starting mid January for several weeks.

They were new to the market, with nothing to compare them to. As a result, some visitors decided to wait. Perhaps the dealer would have even better samples at next year's show. But that did not turn out to be the case. The offering the following year was not as great. They were smaller and somewhat more expensive. So, some again decided to wait. By the third year there were none.

UNIQUE | 39

In Tanzania, where the famous tanzanite mines are located, they expect to run out of tanzanite gems some time during the next 20 to 30 years. Tanzanite is found only in this one place in the world. That means, the sale of tanzanite will be old stock or resale only. Consequently, the value of tanzanite will keep going up and up as availability diminishes. It is prized as one of the world's most beautiful blue gems – a magnificent mineral, indeed.

A skilled carver brings out the finest qualities in each mineral specimen. The world’s largest carved gem-quality tanzanite is L’heure Bleu. To reflect the mineral nature of the gem crystal, the crystal faces at the point remain uncarved, thus displaying art flowing from crystalline nature. To the delight of connoisseurs the world over, this very special art carving will be on display at the Wilensky Mineral Gallery in New York City during January 2020.

Dr Rob Lavinsky developed his love for minerals at a young age when at age 14 he participated in his first mineral show. Since then he has studied, written about, sold and developed one of the most prestigious mineral collections in the world, Arkenstone. Dr Lavinsky serves as advisor to various important institutions including the American Museum of Natural History and the Rice Museum, and as foreign editor and adviser to the Hunan Museum of Geology. He recently had a new mineral, Lavinskyite, named after him.

Arkenstone has been located in Dallas, Texas since 2002 and has the world's most diverse gallery of collectible mineral specimens, open by appointment only, with thousands of specimens on display. They also have a gallery in Shanghai. Arkenstone now participates in the world’s largest shows in Munich

(Germany), Chenzhou (China), Tucson, and Denver (USA).

At the Arkenstone there are many important collections, including the famous Pinnacle Collection. There you may find the Blue Cap Tourmalines which are considered the Holy Grails of mineral collecting. The Arkenstone houses the best single crystal found intact.

In 2007, Wayne Thompson published a book called ‘Ikons – Classic and Contemporary Masterpieces’. It is an homage to minerals as art and makes the point that iconic specimens are as important as art masterpieces. However, there is a huge difference between pricing for mineral masterpieces and lesser specimens. It is always difficult to know what an “ikon” has sold for –rumours help drive up the price. Some unique treasures may sell for many thousands or millions of dollars.

40 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 41

The Tourmaline Queen Mine & Pala Chief Mine, operated by Bill Larson during the discovery, were the source of the Blue Cap Pocket, which has been referred to as the ‘Find of the Century’ by Dr Vincent Manson, curator of the American Museum of Natural History at the time of discovery.

Other tourmalines from the Cruzeiro Mine in Minas Gerais, Brazil is famous for the quality and variety of gem crystals found there, and this wild formation of rubellite is totally unique.

New finds in the last year or two, which have shaken up the world of gem crystals are those which include Tourmalines from Russia. The longer of the two crystals measures 33cm – the piece is two feet wide!

Fluorites can be some of the most beautifully coloured mineral crystals available. Dr Lavinsky’s personal collection represents some of the finest fluorites ever found in China.

Minerals can take the most fantastic shapes, curling like rams’ horns, or shooting up like lightning, as metals will do. The Arkenstone Aqua Cross is a unique cross formed this way naturally. It is accompanied by a huge, 450-carat cut stone.

42 | UNIQUE

Gold, silver, platinum may display their crystalline structure and are called native specimens, or are called massive, in the form of nuggets.

One of the world’s most famous gold nuggets is in the Perot Museum of Nature

and Science in Dallas, Texas – The Ausrox Gold Nugget, a true rock star in the gem and mineral world. In 2010, three miners were in the wilderness of Australia armed with just a metal detector and a small tractor. They found a piece of gold about the size of a basketball and weighing

over 50 pounds – and then learned it was among the largest in the world, said a spokesperson for The Pinnacle Collection, which owns the nugget. “This discovery is a terrific illustration of the important scientific contributions made by amateur collectors and everyday citizens”.

Aweinspiring ALPS

Switzerland is a year-round destination, but winter seems to bring out the best it has to offer. Snow highlights the beauty, the quietness, the peacefulness of the Swiss Alps while at the same time generating opportunities for unique experiences. It is an invitation to reconnect with your joy of life in an exceptional setting.

Like all good things, enjoying the Swiss lifestyle begins with a journey. The trip is part of the pleasure. Anticipation mounts. Landscapes change. Take the MOB train from the GoldenPass line from Montreux and gently weave your way through this magical land.

Panoramic train journeys do not get better than this. The imposing mountains facing you at lake level quickly become majestic. Within a few minutes you are high up the steep hillsides leaving the lake behind and entering mountainous terrain. Forests and snow begin to engulf the train. Before arriving at Chateau d’Oex, at 958 meters above sea level, the train tunnels through the mountain to exit in the valley of the Pays d’Enhaut. It feels completely wild, as if going through an untouched part of nature.

Rare houses or stables remind you that this seemingly virgin territory is actually inhabited. It is quite remarkable to see such a scarcely populated area in a developed country. It is one of the many wonders of Switzerland, particularly in the Swiss Alps.

The panoramic train continues through valleys and steep ravines, rugged cliffs hanging over you on one side, craggy, abrupt falls into mountain rivers on the other. Feast on local products of dried meats, swiss cheeses and local wines, comfortably seated taking in the breathtaking views. What a wonderful train ride!

JEWEL OF THE BERNER ALPS

At the end of the 19th century, Gstaad was still a remote alpine village at 1050 meters in the pristine, spectacular setting of Saanenland. The development of transport, especially the Montreux –Zweisimmen connection, and tourism quickly turned Gstaad into one of the most famous recreation spots in Europe. It has retained its rightful reputation as an untainted oasis of nature where time slows down. It is a place where you can unwind, relax and find inner peace for the whole family.

The Gstaad Palace is the epitome of what makes Gstaad special. A perfect blend of alpine luxury, family spirit, entertainment and well-being, the hotel opened in 1913 – spearheaded by Robert Steffen, a visionary school teacher, who saw the potential of the village to become a winter destination. Its original name was the Royal-Hôtel & Winter Palace, an exceptional luxury hotspot for families. It was then taken over by the Scherz family in 1938 and has remained family-owned ever since.

The third generation is perpetuating their unique art of hospitality, with the fourth already actively working on taking on their responsibilities. This is not anecdotical. This is what makes the atmosphere so special here. There is a coziness as soon as you step into the Lobby Bar. The grand fireplace adds to the comfortable feeling. The molded wood ceilings, the natural stone, the large windows allowing panoramic views from every angle, make you feel like you are entering your own exclusive Swiss chalet.

Originally, the palace held 150 rooms, but needs of its prestigious guests changed over the decades. More spacious rooms and suites became essential. Today, the Gstaad Palace comprises 90 rooms of which 35 are suites. The 8th floor is fully dedicated to the 240 sqm Penthouse Suite. Below sits the Tower Suite with an alcove-office in one tower to the southwest and a bathtub in the tower to The the southeast, both with awe-inspiring views. sense of well-being quickly takes over, dispersing any petty concerns from the everyday life you have left behind.

To fully let the Swiss Alp art de vivre soak in, a visit to the Palace’s spa is highly recommended. It is second to none. A wide, open-fireplace welcomes you and instantly puts you at ease. Large floorto-ceiling windows let the light flood in and offer panoramic views of the majestic Bernese Oberland Alps. The outside Jacuzzi pool massages you into total relaxation while snow (or sunrays) falls on your head. Well-being is an understatement at this point.

A large indoor pool – complemented by the Olympic-size outdoor pool for the summer months – enables sportier guests to fulfill their needs. The elegant hammam and sauna areas provide an exquisite outdoor patio where you can cool down listening to the silence, only disrupted by the sound of cascading water nearby and birds singing in the pines around. Pure relaxation.

The Gstaad Palace provides activities for everyone. Kids have their own games room and play room where they can spend hours dressing up as princesses and princes, playing pinball, watching movies or playing on the latest console games.

Gastronomes will delight in the five fine restaurants. A memorable dinner at Le Grand Restaurant will please the keenest taste buds and the impressive wine selection will satisfy the most demanding wine connoisseur. For the ultimate in traditional Swiss cheese, descend into the old bank vault –constructed as a safe in 1939 – which has been transformed into La Fromagerie, where you can sample the famed champagne truffle fondue.

Looking to take it up a notch? The Palace has developed unique experiences for its guests. The Lunch by Helicopter will take you on a breathtaking ride above the Alps, around the iconic Matterhorn and back with an unforgettable stop for an alpine champagne lunch at 3000 meters. There also is the Glacier 3000 option to experience skiing on a glacier with 360° views of the Alps: Berner, Walliser, Italian or French you can see all of them from here.

If you want to experience the ultimate in seclusion, the Palace added the Walig Hut to its accommodation offering in 2009. An incredible private chalet built in 1783 at 1,700 meters, this is the perfect place to organize an intimate lunch or dinner and spend the night as if you were alone in the world.

If socializing is more your scene, the Gstaad Palace is home to the world-famous GreenGo nightclub. It was designed in 1971 by the famous architect Teo Jako and immediately became the hottest place to party in the region. The 70s vibe is untouched with stylish Paco Rabanne orange lamps hanging over round orange disco tables. Celebrities, movie stars, and royalty have all danced the night away here, making it the trendiest spot after dark.

JOURNEY TO THE INNER LAKES

Leaving Gstaad, the GoldenPass train offers more breathtaking views as it climbs to Schönried and Zweisimmen. The winding rail track is an eye-opener on the wilderness and remoteness of the area – a soothing place, far away from hectic urban life.

Hop on the next train (always punctual) to Interlaken and the journey continues through the heart of the Berner Alps. At Spiez, the panorama changes as it unfolds on the Thunersee. Gentle hills and imposing mountains all around contrast with the lake life below. This is Switzerland at its best. Reach Interlaken and the views of the Jungfraujoch at 3,571 meters is breath-taking.

The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is the perfect place to take in this panorama. The two hotels, Victoria and Jungfrau, were built in 1864 and 1865. They quickly combined into a 700-room, fivestar hotel that became a local landmark.

The lobby connecting the two properties was added in 1992 and is a beautiful, luminous, all-glass structure that connects both sides of the hotel as well as the spa extension. The Belle Epoque heritage of the hotel can be felt through the gorgeous corridors connecting the aisles of the property. Luxurious halls, fountains, and chandeliers accompany your every step.

The gastronomic restaurant La Terrasse is a model of the architecture and style from that fabled era. The Victoria ballroom has retained the original wooden floors from 1864 and its stunning crystal chandeliers. The Sapori Italian restaurant still occupies its original 1865 dining room, with an eight-meter high painted ceiling and the original steel pillars decorated with the purest Belle Epoque volutes. This is truly a special place.

Through constant renovations, the five-star hotel now offers 216 spacious rooms and suites. Indulge yourself with unparalleled Jungfrau views in Napoleonian décor at the Louis XVI suite or immerse yourself in Indian accents in the Yash Chopra Suite – where the famous Bollywood movie director and -producer stayed every time they came here. For the most exclusive experience, stay in the duplex Tower Suite with its two private terraces and have your private chef cook meals right under the Grand Hotel dome.

THE NEXT LEVEL OF WELL-BEING

With a perfect mountainous setting, it is little wonder that well-being has always been a central concern at Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. Opened in 1992, the spa was one of the very first in Switzerland and it has retained its original indoor pool area with majestic Art-Deco-inspired columns. The 5,500-square-meter Nescens Spa offers no less than three different areas, mixed or gender-specific to relax and pamper yourself. The hotel also features 10 Bel-Air suites located directly above the spa for enhanced convenience. But what sets this destination apart is their uniquely personalized approach to medical well-being and anti-aging science. The aim is to help guests become healthier, recharge their batteries and live a youthful life for longer.

It all starts with a check-up meeting with a team of professionals: a doctor, an osteopath, and a fitness coach. They will appraise your current status, discuss your potential and define the goals that suit you best.

As Hans-Peter Veit, director of the spa, explains: “It is never a one-size-fits-all approach. We are truly life coaches helping our guests change their habits to achieve their full potential as if they were competition champions. We combine food, fitness and treatments in order to reach a balanced program completely in line with who they are, the way they live, what they like. Some people want boot camp sports activity, some others will need more gentle activities like aqua yoga”.

The renowned chef, Stefan Beer, will then provide a tailored menu for each guest, made with local products and according to people’s personal preferences.

“We do not believe in imposing drastic measures onto people,” says Hans-Peter. “We educate our guests, so they understand how they can adapt their own way of life without taking the pleasure factor out of the equation.”

Better-Aging programs start from four-day introductions to 7 days for fitness or 10 days minimum for important weight loss. The key to a successful program is to reach a balance between the three axis and provide simple, applicable tips they can take home. Follow them and you will look and feel better…the key to better aging.

This is a tailored and personal approach. It is like having your own personalized hotel where everything is made for you specifically, from treatments to activities to food. Ten guests at a time are accepted for programs as the dedicated logistics it involves is extremely precise.

But once guests are rejuvenated and have tips to apply to their daily life outside the hotel, why do they come back? Hans-Peter answers with a smile: “Most of them come back in better shape and there is always room for improvement. Moreover, all our guests admit they just enjoy being pampered in such a tailored fashion.”

Coquillade Village

The Luberon is a picturesque region in the heart of Provence in southern France, renowned for unspoilt ancient villages dotted across the surrounding hilltops. This is an area made for cycling, with quiet back roads meandering past vineyards and orchards, castles and wineries, lavender fields and friendly cafes.

72 | UNIQUE

It is easy to see why Swiss entrepreneur Andy Rihs, with a passion for wine and cycling, bought the hamlet of Coquillade Village in 2006 and set out to make it the most beautiful luxury hotel and wine tourism destination in the area, and the perfect base for exploring the incredible countryside on two wheels.

Coquillade Village opened its doors two years later, and has gone from strength to strength and now boasts a beautiful selection of rooms and suites, an extensive vineyard, three gourmet restaurants and a stunning spa.

Respect for the village’s authenticity and distinct environment were the driving factors behind the estate’s major restoration and construction work, both architectural and ecological. The buildings have been developed according to ecological standards (with energy reduction) and a geothermal system (for heating and cooling). Constant environmental endeavours enabled Coquillade Village to obtain the esteemed European Ecolabel in 2012.

Relais et Châteaux-affiliated, Coquillade Village brings together elegance, intimacy and highend hotel services. In the heart of this peaceful haven: 63 rooms and suites reflect a unique combination of design and Provence inspiration.

Passionate about architecture and design, the owners blended big names such as Frey, Manuel Canovas and Rubelli for materials, Starck for sanitation, local craftspeople for the woodwork and natural stone, or the famous chandelier brand, Mathieu Lustrerie. Decorated in a contemporary and warm style, while respecting the Provençal spirit, the rooms feature natural materials: exposed stone walls, and paintings in the colours of Roussillon.

STUNNING SUITES

The Luxury Deluxe Pool Suite features an 800 square metre landscaped, shaded garden with heated pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, and a unique view of the Calavon valley, the Luberon mountains and the villages of Bonnieux, Lacoste and Saignon. Inside, there is a spacious living room and king-size bed on the mezzanine. The luxurious suite also features a hammam cabin for two, a balneo bath and a double walk-in shower –making it the perfect place for relaxing.

The Open Spa Suites are ideal for a romantic getaway and moments of well-being in complete privacy. They are equipped with an INIPI sauna or steam bath, and a Blue Moon or Sundeck bath.

Family Suites can accommodate up to two adults and three children, with some featuring a mezzanine space, and offer separate areas with a king-size bed for parents, and single beds for children. They also feature a spacious living room to enjoy family time.

CUISINE

Fine food is a key component of the Coquillade Village experience, with seasonal fresh produce grown in their own vegetable garden for the chefs to draw from.

Packed with spring vegetables, herbs, flowers and spices, the chefs pick the very best to enrich their menus with. As well as their own produce, Coquillade Village selects the best local suppliers to provide a true taste of Provence.

There are three exceptional dining options for guests to enjoy, including the signature. Coquillade Restaurant has always kept a close eye on the latest trends of gastronomy whilst preserving the refined cuisine and know-how of Chef Thierry Enderlin. Patrons can now discover small dishes, styled “gourmet tapas”, delicately presented: Provence classics with a modern twist, original creations and favorites from around the world featuring rare ingredients grace the menu. Guests may create their very own menu choosing from an extensive selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts, mainly based on seasonal produce and locally sourced organic specialties. The estate’s wine list features Aureto wines among a comprehensive collection of French and international wines.

In a relaxing vacation setting, Il Ristorante offers refined and sophisticated Italian cuisine –including antipasti buffets, fresh salads and, of course, delicious pizza. The terrace offers magnificent views of the Luberon, only adding to the restaurant’s ambience.

Les Vignes also offers those same stunning views, with the summer version of the restaurant – Le Jardin dans les Vignes – opening out into the heart of the vineyard.

Tranquil and immersed in nature, the restaurant’s menu changes regularly and the chef cooks local and regional products from the vegetable garden. During the summer, the dishes follow the seasonal rhythm of the garden. There is a woodfired grill for Mediterranean wild fish and organically-farmed meat, accompanied by seasonal vegetables.

There is even a Kids & Teens SPA, which provides tailored treatments for younger guests to enjoy in a fun and playful environment.

SUPER CYCLING

Being located in an area renowned for superb cycling, it’s no surprise to see Coquillade Village catering to this growing tourism sector. However, like all services offered at the five-star property, Coquillade goes the extra mile, with a unique Cycling Center.

Featuring the famous Swiss brand BMC, this 200 square metre showroom allows guests to rent racing bikes, road bikes, electric bikes and mountain bikes – making exploring the immediate area a joy for bikers of all ages and abilities.

Bicycles, equipment and accessories such as helmets and clothing are also available to buy, and the workshop also offers maintenance and repairs.

WINE EXPERIENCES

Surrounding Coquillade Village, the Aureto Vineyards have seen generations of local vineyards produce wine since the 13th century.

Between Luberon and Ventoux, the Aureto vineyards feature 36 hectares of vines in the heart of an authentic and protected environment. The clay-limestone soil, with a mostly southern exposure, expresses itself in the wines. In 2007, when the vineyard was restarted, the vines were completely restructured. Today, emphasis has been placed on renewing the vineyard in accordance with the rules of well-reasoned agriculture.

The Aureto cellar organises wine tasting workshops in a fun and playful way. Cellar Master Aurélie Julien and her team invite guests to discover the winemaking cellar, located just a few metres from the hotel.

Inaugurated in 2013, the winetasting cellar guides guests through the Aureto cuvées in a contemporary space, alongside a selection of fine cheeses and charcuterie.

There are also wine-growing walking routes, enabling enthusiasts to wander the vineyards for an exclusive view of the growing process.

Julien discovered the world of wine during a holiday in Burgundy. Driven by a relentless passion for wine, she obtained a certificate in Viticulture and Oenology at the Lycée Macon Davaye, a Masters of Science of the Vine at the Institute Jules Guyot in Dijon, and a Degree in Oenology from the Faculty of Pharmacy in Montpellier.

She then spent two years expending her knowledge in winemaking in France (Cave de Sylla in Apt and Cave de Tain l’Hermitage) and abroad (New Zealand and Argentina), before joining Aureto in 2009.

PRIVATE EVENTS

As well as leisure guests, Coquillade Village also caters to professional and private events, as well as magical weddings.

Cocktails, seminars, galas, study days, team building activities and incentives can all be hosted, for between 10 and 160 people. Event spaces range from 50 to 300 square metres and are fully equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment.

In such stunning, beautiful surroundings, Coquillade Village is an ideal setting for weddings, making ‘the big day’ that bit more memorable. In a sumptuous setting, under majestic chandeliers, with the rustic charm of Le Jardin dans les Vignes or by the pool, Coquillade Village is committed to making weddings a truly dream day.

ALL ABOUT the Girl

GÜBELIN

The fascinating inner world of the rare padparadscha sapphire inspired Gübelin Jewellery to design the new Aurora world of jewellery, with Rising Lotus and Splendid Feather presenting spectacular pieces. The creations are also an homage to the most renowned country of origin for these orange-pink sapphires: Sri Lanka.

For at least 2,500 years, gemstones have been sourced on Sri Lanka, and mining of these precious stones has changed little in that time.

Traditional mining techniques using little mechanisation are employed, to ensure the safety of the miners and also to better protect the environment.

“In 2018, my wife and I travelled together with Helen Molesworth of the Gübelin Academy to Sri Lanka,” said President Raphael Gübelin. “There we visited mines and discovered the land known for its precious gem deposits.”

“As a member of the sixth generation of our family-owned company, I am very proud of the way in which we combine beauty, knowledge and artisanship.”

Aurora presents jewellery inspired by the inner world of the padparadscha, with the word Aurora describing the orange-pink colour reminiscent of a new dawn.

Sapphires are often associated with the colour blue, but actually come in a wide range of colours. Among the rarest are sapphires in orange-pink or pink-orange shades – known as padparadscha, and similar to the lotus blossom found on Sri Lanka.

The Rising Lotus ring features a padparadscha sapphire of 14.25ct, as well as an astonishing 550 brilliantcut diamonds. Each delicate petal is designed separately with the floral elements coming together to form an incredible blossom. There are 24 leaves set in three tiers of eight leaves each, while the ring itself is manufactured in red gold.

The Splendid Feather bangle again draws on the natural internal characteristics of the padparadscha –structures that gemmologists refer to as feathers.

The cushion-shape padparadscha weighs 5.60ct and is accompanied by 59 pastel-coloured sapphires in various shapes and cuts. The flowing design of gems is framed by diamondset wings. The jewel setters adorned the red gold wings with brilliant-cut diamonds and diamond baguettes, custom-made for the tapering setting

of the bangle. Together, the diamonds produce a subtle play of light

In addition to the unique bracelet, chandelier earrings, necklaces and rings are available featuring padparadscha sapphires, available in red and white gold.

Founded in 1854, Gübelin serves its international clientele in boutiques in prime locations in Switzerland and in a Private Salon in Hong Kong.

VERSACE

Unisex scents seem to be the order of the day and Versace has joined the growing list of fashion brands tuning in to this fragrance trend.

Tapping into the spirit of its haute couture fashion collections, Versace has launched its first luxury unisex fragrance collection – six scents falling under the Atelier Versace Fragrance label.

The scents are Jasmin au Soleil, Éclat de Rose, Santal Boisé, Cédrat de Diamante, Figue Blanche, and Vanille Rouge. Each one focuses on a central ingredient, with the resulting fragrances spanning fruity, floral and woody scents.

“This is a new milestone for Versace that stems from the idea that every woman and man is different and that, in the same way that they like to get their dress made-to-measure, that’s even truer when it comes to fragrances,” Versace Chief Creative Officer Donatella Versace told Women’s Wear Daily (WWD).

“We all want to find that fragrance that really represents who we are. I wanted to create something unique and that’s why one fragrance wasn’t enough.”

The advertising campaign goes ‘behind the scenes’ of the fashion house, featuring models posing with tailors and seamstresses while holding bottles of the perfume.

The sleek glass bottles feature a golden cap, and range from transparent to black, depending on the intensity of the fragrance.

The Merchant of Venice SPA offers treatments and massages with oils created by luxury fragrance house The Merchant of Venice, catering to the increased demand for authentic and original experiences and connections with local crafts.

Each handbag takes advantage of the naturally occurring variations and characteristics of the full-grain leather – so every bag is truly unique to the owner.

Available in two colourways, including an elegant classic black and a stunning pink, the Mini is adaptable to complement almost any outfit and suit any occasion.

“I believe women are increasingly discerning about choosing quality over quantity and beauty over label,” said Macfarlane. “When it comes to making purchase decisions, they recognise the benefit of owning a timeless, individual and exclusive luxury investment piece, rather than the ubiquitous ‘It’ bag.

“The Bucklesbury range comprises limited numbers of beautiful, individually crafted and timeless pieces which will remain part of the stylish woman’s wardrobe for many years and with good care, can even look better with age.”

The Bucklesbury range also includes a fashionable tote bag, a business/travel backpack and a laptop attaché case.

HOUSE OF SILLAGE

Haute parfumerie House of Sillage has announced an exciting collaboration with fashion designer, Christian Cowan. Cowan has created flamboyant statement outfits for celebrities in the ranks of Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Cardi B and is now collaborating with House of Sillage.

The global fragrance brand is sold in more than 33 countries in the most luxurious department stores, including Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s. The collection debuted at New York Fashion Week during Christian Cowan’s Spring Summer 2020 Fashion Show.

The House of Sillage collection, comprised of a unisex fragrance and Bow Lipstick Case Set, is lacquered in a black and white check design, reflecting the fusion of two industry creatives.

House of Sillage Founder & CEO, Nicole Mather, said, “Christian loves colour and sparkle in his designs as do I, and we both have an affinity for the black and white checkered design.”

The pattern also pays tribute to Cowan’s work on the cover of Cardi B’s debut studio album Invasion of Privacy where the hip hop artist is boldly donning Cowan’s checkered suit.

The collection’s featured parfum is the best-selling Passion de L’Amour, a sensual oud fragrance embodying warm, sweet vanilla and caramel notes – whisking one away to an exotic tropical fantasy in the south pacific.

“The starting point of this collection was my home village in Spain, Moaña,” Cowan says. “The fragrance evokes such strong memories and connects to my childhood memories in Spain – strong femininity, a Mediterranean spirit of warmth and spice.”

This limited-edition collection is available in-store and online at Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue Flagship New York City store, as well as online at houseofsillage.com

THE NAUTILUS

The fabulous Maldives are a must-visit destination for anyone looking for ultimate privacy, complete relaxation, and pristine white sand beaches. In fact, the only thing you’ll need to worry about on this dream vacation is which of the incredible resorts to choose from.

There are many that we here at Unique can recommend, but only one that has been recognised by the prestigious Relais & Châteaux.

Having opened in Spring 2019, The Nautilus is one of only 13 new Relais & Chateaux members this year, and

is a sign of the resort’s burgeoning reputation as one of the Indian Ocean’s best private island experiences.

Philippe Gombert, President of Relais & Châteaux, said: “We are very happy to count The Nautilus as a member of

our family. This is a perfect example of what Relais & Châteaux is: properties anchored in their region, ambassadors of their heritage, but also passionate about their craft. The hotel is perfectly located and will offer a delicious Maldivian immersion for our guests.”

92 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 93

Located in the UNESCO biosphere reserve of Baa Atoll, The Nautilus is a luxury bohemian hideaway which celebrates freedom and individuality, where guests are encouraged to be themselves and shape their own personal journey.

Baa Atoll is home to kaleidoscopic marine life unique to Maldivian waters, a wonderland of beauty just waiting to be explored. With access to over 40 dive sites, run by AquaNautica PADI dive centre, The Nautilus offers a wealth of diving in Baa Atoll and further afield with many dive trips being private. A multi-lingual team runs courses for divers of all levels and experience. You can even let the resident marine biologist introduce you to the wonders of the reef and even ‘plant’ your own corals.

With a total of only 26 keys, The Nautilus, which can also be booked exclusively as a private island, offers accommodation perfect for groups or families, with each House sleeping from four up to 12 guests. Each stunning House has its own large private pool, ranging in size from 40 to 90 square metres.

Uniquely for The Maldives, a dedicated private butler is allocated to each House, at every room category. Dining is “unscripted” and is about liberating the mind and palate – menus at the overwater fine dining restaurant Zeytoun, beachside grill Ocaso, pool bar Naiboli and relaxed all-day eatery Thyme are for inspiration only.

A beautiful overwater spa, a liveried fleet of yachts and a seaplane, and a breathtaking house reef complete a quintessential Maldives experience.

As they say at The Nautilus, understatement is king, and this resort whispers to discreet high net worth travellers who wish to fly under the radar.

ADAGOLD

When it comes to private jet charter and unique travel experiences, Adagold Aviation sets the gold standard

UNIQUE | 97

Luxe travel is about more than just beautiful destinations and luxury stays.

It is the inspired moments in life that become our stories, like finding a place where the night sky is so purple black that the stars feel close enough you can touch them. Or sitting in the desert sands and hearing dreamtime stories with elders and learning to read the animal tracks in the sand.

It is in these moments of privilege, crossing the barriers that divide us and awakening us to connection, that we know we are on a great journey. These are the moments when hearts and minds open to the wonder of the universe and we are humbled and inspired.

Luxury travel is made up of these moments and so much more.

Adagold Aviation (Adagold), an Australian-based air charter management company, is focused on sharing these intimate and potent moments with their international clients by developing bespoke itineraries that are unforgettable. These individually designed Adagold Luxe Jet-Centric Experiences include some of the most awe-inspiring destinations globally.

A Jet-Centric experience is a term coined by Adagold to represent the power of the journey itself. Adagold Luxe itineraries allow clients to experience luxury private jet travel on their own agenda, in luxury and privacy.

Adagold Luxe simply calls it: “Travel to be inspired, explore to be awakened and experience to be transformed.”

Since 1992, Adagold has been leading the way in Australia and regionally in the private air charter industry. Adagold’s earliest clients included the Australian Government and major corporate clients who trusted and valued their skilled management, safety and planning. Adagold quickly grew to offer the same expertise to the luxury private travel market.

Over the years, Adagold has diversified and grown but has always kept true to its core value of serving clients with exceptional aviation management and providing independent aviation advice. Through their key international relationships, Adagold has become a niche business working globally in the aviation industry, with many international governments, visiting heads of state, multinational organisations, celebrities, and VIPs.

ADAGOLD LUXE JETCENTRIC EXPERIENCES

There has been a trend over recent years towards luxury private jet tours and Adagold has been a part of this development from the start. Their series of Luxe itineraries, custom-designed to inspire travellers to enjoy a deeper journey, are exclusive and personal.

“Modern luxe travel is about experiences that are transcendental at their core,” says Adagold Luxe. “Travel that brings reflection and contemplation, arousal and humility. It is about reaching remote and unique places that few can visit and being immersed in these calm and quiet locations.”

Adagold Luxe Itineraries, with names such as ‘The Great Southern Gastronomic Experience’, ‘Indulgent Australian Getaway’, or ‘Oceania Luxury Escape’ have included diverse destinations in the remote Kimberley region of Northern Australia, private islands in Fiji, and amazing tropical water escapes across the South Pacific – where your jet can fly you to rendezvous with a superyacht.

What all these diverse locations have in common is their awe-inspiring natural beauty and wilderness, raw and authentic landscapes that lift the spirit. They all have their own unique stories to share with guests and their own generous spirit of hospitality and love.

There are certain destinations that stay with you in your heart and become your own stories, and these are the ones Adagold wishes to share.

EXOTIC KITCHEN GARDENS IN FIJI

Of all the places visited, there are some, such as Laucala Island, that truly leave you breathless.

“The beautiful intimate villas have their own private outdoor baths as well as individual pools and are surrounded by wild tropical walls of foliage with views out to the shimmering turquoise sea,” says Adagold Luxe. “The scent of orchids on the tropical, salt filled breeze elicits true sensory pleasure and ultimate relaxation.”

The island is a paradise on earth. The majestic, hundred-year-old palm trees remain as a towering memory of the historic palm plantations that were part of the island’s early history. Sustainable gardens feed guests each day and minimum waste is created because almost everything is made and grown on the island, including the beautiful guest soaps, essential oils and spa treatments.

Guests are treated with such care and respect for privacy with the permeating love and hospitality of the Fijian hosts that Laucala is always memorable and dream-like.

“Laucala has such extensive and exotic kitchen gardens covering acres of this lush tropical haven and such luxuriously appointed villas, that to be marooned here for ever would indeed be fortunate,” says Adagold Luxe.

UNIQUE | 101

RAW LOCAL EXPERIENCES

In genuinely connecting to a culture, a landscape or a wilderness, you become awakened in a way that transforms your perspective and your relationships with yourself and your loved ones. This unique experience is one which is ultimately much more valuable than a luxury holiday where you simply sip cocktails by a pool – it is more about the barefoot and wild exhilarating luxury of space and time that can be discovered within the depths of wilderness regions. In a vast and rugged country like Australia, where most of the country is considered ‘off the beaten track’, you can experience what truly is a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Adagold recently created an itinerary for a group of guests who wished to experience the ultimate luxury fishing adventure in Australia. They worked closely with award-winning fishing experience company Go-Fish to create a uniquely personal adventure. Fishing and luxury don’t always go hand-inhand but the itinerary was designed with both in mind, connecting with superyachts and enjoying personal moments such as guided access to unique local experiences.

“One of our favourite experiences on the Whitsundays was being taken to a quiet inlet behind the worldfamous Whitehaven Beach by a well know local chef/locavore forager, Kev Collins, that only locals know about,” said one of the guests.

“We were taken to a rock shelf on the edge of the waterway as the tide was at its lowest and a wonderful oyster bed was exposed. We sat in the boat next to the rock shelf, the sun glistening off the water, with a bottle of local chilled wine and enjoyed oysters shucked straight off the rock. They were still salty and warm and so raw and fresh. The best oyster bar in the world and definitely a unique experience, and then we went fly fishing on Whitehaven Beach.”

One common goal to achieve this is to find wilderness areas where quiet contemplation can be enjoyed in nature, such as Rainforest fishing experiences at Byron Bay.

“Paddling through the river and watching the sunlight shimmer across the water in front of me, the only sound

I could hear was my oar gliding through the water and the beautiful sound of the birdsong around us,” said one guest on the Byron Rainforest experience. “At that moment, I felt a kind of serenity that I’ve found can rarely be achieved in life.”

Adagold is proud of its portfolio of experiences that visit the length and breadth of Australia, from iconic Kangaroo Island and the worldrenowned Southern Ocean lodge, to the wilderness of Tasmania and the wild and untamed Kimberley. There is so much to see and the beauty of these itineraries is that they allow travellers to see all that they want in the most efficient way with their own custom schedules. The beauty of chartering a private jet is changes can be made around the needs of the group. For example, if something comes up that Adagold guests wish to spend more time enjoying, necessary changes can be managed and guests can stay enjoying the moment.

INCREDIBLE ARCHITECTURE OF REMOTE LODGES

For extreme isolated luxury it is hard to beat The Lindis, in the South Island

of New Zealand. The Lindis sits nestled in the glacial Lindis Valley with a trout stream meandering past and breathtaking snow-capped mountains looming overhead. A quiet picnic up the Lindis Valley, sitting in the wild buttercups beside the cool glacial river, is simple pleasure.

The architecturally designed building is a masterpiece of craftmanship. It is like an enormous hand-woven basket that hides in the landscape with true humility and majesty. The beams of Australian hardwood were soaked and softened to allow them to be carefully shaped by skilled craftsman. There are few buildings that sit more seamlessly and in harmony with their environment. Simply inspirational.

“The night sky when visiting the Lindis is simply overwhelming. The stars are brighter and clearer than almost anywhere on earth,” says Adagold. “This is a place to truly be in awe of the universe. We can never stay here long enough. Discovering and sharing such magic destinations in our itineraries is a true pleasure.”

THE GENIUS IN FINDING A NICHE

Keeping true to Adagold’s founder’s nature, Adagold has had a canny mix of innovation and ability to pivot and evolve into new opportunities, while keeping a strength of direction and a grounded operational practicality.

“Having a vision is one thing, making the vision a reality requires a passionate and dedicated team. The Adagold team have incredible diversity in skills and expertise within the aviation industry that have allowed the business to have strength in finding its niche,” said Mark Clark, Founder, Adagold Aviation.

The depth of aviation knowledge and careful management skills required to maintain Adagold’s complex business contracts has held the company in good stead, allowing for business growth and continued depth of development in their team.

Adagold has always blazed its own path. Their focus on developing new markets and stronger relationships in the competitive luxury travel market globally is bringing them new challenges and opportunities and creating new strategic friendships. This market has changed considerably over the last few years with new market opportunities opening as ultra-wealth is redistributed around the globe.

Complex and growing markets, such as China, offer new potential for business but require commitment and strategic planning. New trade markets do not open up easily and cultural awareness and sensitivity are critical, as is a fortitude to stay the course and learn and innovate to meet changing needs. International trade relationships do not happen without building trust first. Finding companies that are aligned across cultural barriers, with matching business values, takes time. Then there is the immense growth that must happen internally to overcome language barriers and cultural expectations. An exciting journey, but not for the faint-hearted or the partially committed. Being nimble and able to pivot and adapt is important.

“Adagold is visionary in its global strategy, especially in a complex market like China,” said Yin Yu, consultant at Ready Set Go China. “It has not only the

determination in carving out a unique path together with its Chinese partners and clients but also the flexibility and persistence that this market requires to succeed. Adagold's professional and market-appropriate approach are two unique assets that make its service stand out in the global market.”

Katelyn Aslett, Market Development Manager, Adagold Aviation, added: “In the ad-hoc and VIP charter space, I believe our commitment to our guests is what sets us apart. We really wish to create a seamless and immersive experience from end to end.”

With much of Adagold’s business, they are working with luxury agents globally with the aim to support them and their clients with the best air charter management service.

Adagold keeps the end client at the front of their mind to allow them to give the best management solutions by asking continually what the client will be experiencing, what they will be needing, can anything be organised that will enhance their experience, and what has no one else considered.

“We had a great experience working with Adagold serving one of our VVIP clients for their holidays in Australia,” said Weizhu Ni, Reception Expert Hong Kong. “Adagold impressed us with a wide selection of airplane models, fast processing speed, mature emergency plans, pertinent service attitude, and strong understanding of high-end services and customers. Their crew members and pilots have a strong sense of service, rich experience and patience to answer every question raised by the guests. It's the kind of global partnership that we value and would love to continue to work with.”

Private air charter is complex. There are many considerations, even more so in the most interesting and distant destinations where strong knowledge is required. Customer experience and safety can be impacted by so many things, remote landing strips with differing capabilities, extreme weather patterns which impact operational functionality of aircraft, considerations of weight and implications for crew rest, just to name a few that the general traveller or travel agent would not even know to consider.

That is why partnering with companies who put the complex management at the forefront is critical. Adagold takes their role seriously. They do not just source aircraft, but offer an entire air charter management service, understanding all the complexities and providing the best solutions.

It is true that a company is only as good as its team. It is also true that it is almost impossible for companies to sustain growth without continuing to evolve and diversify in the changing global business climate. With a nimble and dedicated team who uphold the vision of the company’s founder, focused on the pursuit of excellence and providing world-class service, mixed with the courage to pivot and evolve, the future looks bright for Adagold Aviation.

BECAUSE HE’S WORTH IT

RICHARD MILLE

Airbus is a world leader in the application of novel approaches to aeronautical design, in particular those aircraft created for personal clients by its Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ) unit. It was only natural that Richard Mile and ACJ would join forces with the RM 50-02 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph.

Sylvain Mariat, Head of ACJ’s Creative Design Studio, drafted the designs for the RM 50-02 watch and has worked closely with Julien Boillat and Salvador Arbona from Richard Mille R&D Office.

This new timepiece, just like the exceptional luxurious corporate jets built by ACJ, makes use of advanced, open worked design elements in the internal design of bridges and baseplate in grade 5 titanium, along with an extensive application of skeletonisation

to every possible area, offering significant weight reduction. A number of parts within the movement have been coated with a distinctive, special aeronautical coating normally used to protect engine and chassis parts from corrosion and environmental conditions.

The end result is a dramatic view of the technical interior of the split seconds chronograph movement.

The new RM50-02 tourbillon calibre also hosts a power reserve indicator (70 hours) between 11 and 12 o’clock, a torque indicator that supplies information about the tension of the mainspring allowing the optimisation of the chronometer function and a function indicator to show the watch’s state in each of the positions for winding, neutral and Hand setting.

The distinctive case shape in TitaniumAluminum alloy (TiAl) (used in Airbus turbine blades) with a secondary ceramic bezel was developed to mirror the outlines of an ACJ’s typical window shape with a clearly visible, multi-layered hull structure surround.

A first for the watch brand is the iconic Richard Mille screws around the outer edge of the bezel being replaced by Torq set® screws with their distinctively shaped head slots, and a jet engine inspired crown bearing an engraved, wave patterned Airbus logo.

The tourbillon RM 50-02 ACJ is a limited edition of 30 pieces, only available in Richard Mille boutiques.

VAULT

We are big fans of Vault watches here at UNIQUE, not least for their ability to create one-off timepieces for discerning clients.

The V1+ TITANIUM is a commission based on its patron’s requirements, the brand's philosophy for continuous improvement and agile development.

The watch features a redesigned case with a sharper profile resulting in a slight weight reduction. The integrated strap system has been upgraded to offer a seamless connection between the case and the band.

Similar to a Formula 1 race car monocoque, Vault watches feature a

CNC-milled grade 5 titanium mono-cage to which the hour gear transmission dial and V01 automatic movement is fitted. The mono-cage not only adds to the overall stability of the watch but also helps to assemble the complex dial mechanism before inserting it in its case.

Unlike other calibres use of traditional base plates, the unique V01 movement utilises a skeletonized central main plate that is not screwed to the monocage II but held in place by six steel rollers enabling the whole movement to unidirectionally rotate 360° while the time is set. Which leads us to one of the most fascinating aspects of the brand's extreme watches –the shape-shifter-complication.

VAULT doesn’t create classic complications but instead focuses on “emotional complications”. In doing so the brand has created the world’s only timepieces with a changing appearance.

Unlike other watches, setting time on a Vault watch is achieved by rotating the fully adjustable dial made up of 133 parts and the movement at different speeds which alters their angular position and thereby changes the way the watch displays time forever.

The stunning effect is a watch that looks different every time its owner sets it, making this mechanical marvel one of the most personal timepieces ever.

BENNETT WINCH

Established in 2014, and handcrafted in England, Bennett Winch accessories are created using traditional methods and attention to detail to ensure your bag never lets you down.

Now Bennett Winch has turned its attention to the world of horology, with the launch of the watch roll.

Watch lovers have typically struggled finding a travel companion worthy of housing their treasured time pieces, but, with a unique design and innovative materials, the Bennett Winch watch roll provides the solution.

Watch guru Wei Koh, founder of Revolution magazine, has been involved in every stage of the watch roll’s development. Along with the brand’s

Design Director, Rupert Shreeve, it’s taken over a year to perfect everything from the watch roll’s distinctive design to its size and the materials used.

“We were determined to make the ultimate watch roll. Something genuinely unique and made by hand in London from the very finest materials we could source,” says Robin Bennett, Co-Founder of Bennett Winch.

“Wei was incredibly detailed about what the pain-points were with other watch storage solutions, which provided some great design cues allowing us to create something that would set a new standard for anyone travelling with watches.”

Featuring a waterproof Kevlar layer, and lined in Alcantara, the

outer is constructed from the finest Italian leather, making it as pleasing on the eye as it is practical.

Featuring a hexagonal design, and available in black and brown, there’s room inside for three watches, placed on a removable roll with partitions.

“The hexagon shape makes sure that it stands upright as well as on its side, which is important as you don’t want your pride and joy hitting the deck as you load it onto the roll. When unraveled, each edge of the hexagon forms a totally flat watch ‘staging area’ or ‘preparation deck’ – this also helps protect the watches from scratches and bumps when loading onto the cylinder, thanks to the Alcantara lining,” says Shreeve.

MERCEDES MAYBACH GLS 600

This handsome beast, and there really is no other way to describe it, is the ultimate luxurious SUV that is looking to take on the likes of Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan and Bentley’s Bentayga in this increasingly competitive segment.

Drawing on the rich heritage of the Maybach brand, this is a car as much for the passenger as the driver. The 4-litre V8 engine packs 550bhp and will take this 2,785kg goliath from 0-60mph in less than 5 seconds.

The GLS 600 is packed with luxurious feature from front to back, from the moment you open one of the doors – the suspension will drop 25mm and a side step will magically appear, all to provide a more dignified entrance and exit.

How about having a centre console in the rear built for champagne bottles and silver-plated flutes – chilled of course. Everywhere you look is pure, unadulterated luxury in the

first-class cabin, which no expense spared or detail overlooked.

There’s no doubt it’s a delight to drive, but we say sit back with a glass of champagne and get the man up front to engage Maybach mode for an even smoother ride.

The car is due to be released in the second half of 2020. Form an orderly queue.

BOMBARDIER GLOBAL 7500

Expected to enter into service at the end of 2019, Canadian manufacturer Bombardier’s Global 7500 sets a new standard in private jets. Simply, it is the most luxurious, largest, and longest range business jet ever built, and has already been given the seal of approval by Transport Canada, paving the way for a worldwide launch.

Bombardier says the flagship jet will redefine international business jet travel, and few who have seen the aircraft will argue with that claim.

The Global 7500 aircraft boasts an unmatched range of 7,700 nautical miles, a full 300 nautical miles further than initial estimates, and it is the only business aircraft that can connect New York to Hong Kong, and Singapore to San Francisco, nonstop. The Global 7500 also has a top speed of Mach 0.925, and seats up to 19 passengers. The incredible performance also means it is capable of using smaller, hard to reach airports, bringing your final destination even closer, and saving precious time.

But it is inside that the Global 7500 really packs a punch, with four true living spaces offering the kind of space and luxurious comfort you would expect from a five-star hotel suite. The cabin height is a comfortable 6ft 2in and 8ft wide, with length of 54ft 5in from the cockpit divider to the rear of the cabin. Cusomisable to your particular needs, this turns the cabin into your ideal space for work or relaxation (or a mix of both).

Its leading cabin entertainment system, coupled with ultra-fast connection speeds via Ka-band, allows passengers to stream high-definition content inflight – keeping you connected for conference calls or simply watching the latest sports and movies.

The aircraft also features the unique patented Nuage seat for incredible comfort, and dining capabilities in the Conference Suite you simply will not find anywhere else in the air – ideal for meals served from the extensive onboard kitchen.

Little wonder the aircraft won the prestigious 2018 Red Dot Award for Product Design, and is sure to win fans when it finally comes to market, with an estimated price tag of $73 million.

GULFSTREAM G700

Gulfstream has a record of producing the best business jets on the market, exemplified by its in-demand G650ER. Little wonder, then, that the US manufacturer is upping its game once more to combat the challenge from Bombardier.

Announced in October, the G700 will be Gulfstream’s new flagship business jet, and they claim it will be the most spacious, best-performing aircraft in the business jet industry.

Gulfstream, says the G700 boasts the tallest, widest and longest cabin in the industry with leading range and speed capabilities. The G700 will be able to fly 7,500 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 – which by our reckoning puts it slightly behind the enhanced range of the Global 7500, but expect Gulfstream to have a surprise up its sleeve on that score.

The all-new cabin will feature up to five living areas, and (like the Global 7500) has a six-place dining or conference room, plus master suite with shower. The aircraft will also benefit from The Gulfstream Cabin Experience – which promotes and enhances wellness through 20 panoramic oval windows, the largest in the industry; the industry’s lowest cabin altitude, 100 percent fresh air and a whisper-quiet cabin.

“Gulfstream has a long tradition of listening to our customers, and the G700 cabin is the evolution of that collaboration,” said Gulfstream President Mark Burns. “Customers shared how much they value flexibility and comfort in the cabin, all without compromising the speed and range advantages they have come to expect from Gulfstream. The G700 delivers all that and more.”

Launch customer for the G700 will be Qatar Executive, who have placed an order for 10 aircraft, while Flexjet have also been named as the first US customer.

Gulfstream anticipates G700 customer deliveries in 2022, with a price tag of $75 million.

DASSAULT FALCON 6X

French masters Dassault make arguably the most accomplished private jets in the world. Thanks to their decades of experience in military aircraft design, and as the pioneers of the business jet (in the shape of the Falcon 20 back in 1965), Dassault builds some of the most capable jets around.

Now, after problems with their cancelled Falcon 5X (through no fault of their own), Dassault is aiming to match that performance and aerial ability with supreme comfort in the Falcon 6X.

The 6X has the tallest, widest cabin in business aviation (at 6ft 6in and 8ft 6in respectively). Although these margins may sound small, they make a significant difference to passenger comfort and cabin adaptability.

The 6X may not fly as far as the Global 7500 or G700 – it has a range of 5,500 nautical miles – but it is built for customers who require less range and has a price tag to match, at ‘just’ $47 million. That is a significant saving on the ultra-long range jets from Bombardier and Gulfstream. That said, the 6X will still take you from Moscow to New York, Paris to Beijing, or Los Angeles to London.

The Falcon 6X cabin has been styled to achieve a contemporary look befitting its French flair. Flowing, uninterrupted lines enhance the feeling of space and de-clutter the cabin, with room to spare for virtually any configuration. Natural light floods the cabin thanks to 30 windows that are larger than in previous Falcons, plus a unique skylight feature – an industry first.

Dassault’s 6X is nearing initial assembly as the ultrawide body twinjet continues progressing smoothly towards its scheduled first flight in 2021 and entry into service in 2022.

EMBRAER PRAETOR 500

Looking for a mid-size jet that provides exceptional value for money? Look no further than the new Praetor 500 from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. The company is relatively new to the business jet market, having entered in 2000 with the Legacy, but has consistently topped sales figures for its wide portfolio of jets suited to all mission types. That portfolio is the broadest in the market, from the entrylevel Phenom 100EV to the ultra-large Lineage 1000E.

Certified earlier this year, the Praetor 500 is designed for shorter journeys but still boasts an intercontinental range of 3,340 nautical miles, making it the farthest- and fastestflying midsize jet, able to make nonstop flights in North America, as well from New York to London, London to Dubai and Jakarta to Tokyo.

The Praetor 500 is the only jet in its class with Ka-band internet connectivity, has the best cabin altitude, and the only jet in class with full fly-by-wire capability.

“Praetor 500 owners will now enjoy the ultimate customer experience in the midsize class, with the highest level of performance, technology and comfort,” said Michael Amalfitano, President & CEO, Embraer Executive Jets.

The Praetor 500 can seat up to nine passengers with the optional two-place divan. Of the six fully reclining seats, four may be berthed into two beds. The largest baggage compartment in the class is complemented by a rear private lavatory.

Embraer are renowned for providing a lot of plane for your money, and the Praetor 500 in no exception, costing just $17 million.

AERION AS2

No doubt you have heard of the Aerion AS2 – a supersonic business jet that has been on our radar for a few years now, and the first privately built supersonic commercial aircraft.

Looking to bring new supersonic technology to market for those that need speed most, the AS2 looks like being the supersonic project most likely to make it to market. That follows a partnership with Boeing announced earlier this year, to help develop the AS2 as the first step to unlocking supersonic air travel for new markets.

Boeing and Aerion engineers are working together on the AS2 design, with Boeing providing financial, engineering, manufacturing, and flight-test resources to Aerion.

“Together with Boeing, we’re creating a faster, more connected future with tremendous possibilities for enhancing humanity’s productivity and potential,” according to Aerion Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Vice.

With a supersonic cruise of Mach 1.4, the AS2 will be the first commercial aircraft to fly at supersonic speeds over land with no noise on the ground. This is a challenging feat requiring revolutionary aircraft design and an incredibly efficient supersonic engine from GE Aviation — the Affinity Engine. Aerion prefers a silent approach to a less noisy one, and its Boomless Cruise™ technology means being able to fly over land, without creating a sonic boom, at speeds up to Mach 1.2. OK, so what does that actually mean in flight times? You could save almost two hours on a flight from JKF to London, making it four hours instead of six. Or save more than four hours on a flight from New York to Singapore.

Aerion believes their sustainable supersonic flight will revolutionise global mobility and bring humanity up to speed with the accelerated rate of modern business and culture. That means being able to get anywhere faster, get back earlier, maximise your ability to meet in person, and enjoy every second of every flight in supreme comfort. The price? A not out-of-this world $120 million, carrying up to 12 passengers, with first delivery due in 2023. The future starts here.

126 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 127

The Aerion AS2 isn’t the only supersonic jet in the pipeline, and it may not be the first. Spike Aerospace intends to have its S-512 available by 2022, with a 6,200 nautical mile range and top speed of Mach 1.6. Seating up to 18 passengers, the price will range from $80 million to $100 million.

Being developed more for the commercial market (with seating for up to 75 passengers) is Boom Supersonic’s $200 million Overture aircraft, with a long-range cruise

speed of Mach 2.2 and range of 4,500 nautical miles. Of course, there’s no reason why a business jet version cannot be accommodated.

Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation is also working on a supersonic business jet design. Although details are at the moment unclear, it’s thought this aircraft would reach speeds of up to Mach 2.2, and that a prototype could be flying by 2026.

While all of these supersonic jets have incredible speed, that’s nothing when compared to the proposed HyperMach SonicStar, which is aiming for Mach 5.5, and a range of 8,300 nautical miles. That’s Mach 5.5, or 4,200mph.

You’ll have to pay upwards of $220 million for the privilege, but you will be able to fly up to 32 passengers around the world in the blink of an eye. First flight is now planned for 2025 with a certification target of 2028. It just might be worth waiting for.

HYT H5

In a time of impatient immediacy, the very value of time is in danger of being diluted, but not with a HYT H5 on your wrist. The striking timepiece is dedicated to measuring time in a way that draws attention to both its intrinsic passage and precious essence.

130 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 131
132 | UNIQUE

HYT is an ecosystem that unites science, hi-technology, philosophy, art and design. Based in Neuchâtel, at the heart of the traditional Swiss watchmaking region, a dedicated team of 43 individuals makes liquid time real time. Their radical wristwatches harmoniously incorporate a mechanical watch movement as the trigger to the fluid propulsion. They make total sense of time – time and time again.

HYT’s unerring commitment to making sense of time follows exactly the same pattern. Just as erosion has gradually given our earth the mountain peaks, valleys and coastlines we treasure, the H5 timepiece mindfully shapes our perception of time. By showcasing time’s flow, it helps us to value what was, what is and what may be. Layer by layer, element by element, the essence and relevance of time are revealed. Because time and innovation are always on the move.

An architectural approach, inspired by erosion, reveals the layers that create the whole in all its purity. A substance that erodes reveals. If this doesn’t happen, the story isn’t told. Three-dimensionality and transparency invite viewing from all angles.

A domed sapphire glass is ingeniously curved around a bold stainless steel case to simultaneously present and protect. Stratified metal components, stepping and sinuous lines support the design’s strong storyline. The innovative neoralite external flange, with its cut-out numerals further enhance the H5’s fascination with perspective. The striking vertical digits appear to float around the watch during the day and start to glow as darkness falls. Created from one single piece of luminescent, SuperLumiNova®-filled, translucent material, this component’s complex production process involves 3D printing, molding, injection and subtle grinding. Like natural erosion, personal evolution continues around the clock, time after time.

The H5 by HYT comes in two limited editions, each of 25 pieces. They both have green on the color palette and opt for either black or grey to make their individual statements.

UNIQUE | 133

HYT was born of a question. Time flows and only gains meaning through content. So why limit its measurement to indicating the now in splendid isolation, with needle-sharp hands or fleeting digital displays? Determined that its rebellion should make statements and waves, a multi-disciplinary thinktank set out to create timepieces that visibly connect the past, present and future. The HYT answer is a watch that overcomes the force of gravity to indicate the passage of time with liquids.

The rest is history. To be precise, it’s history that began 3,400 years ago with the Clepsydras, or water clocks, of the Pharaohs. These so-called “water thieves” transported water from one container to another to measure elapsed or “stolen” time. This meaningful visualization of the transition of time

seemingly disappeared until 2012, when HYT broke new scientific ground, inventing a wristwatch integrating a patented fluidic module. A coloured liquid documents the recent past; a transparent fluid indicates the foreseeable future. Their meeting point is a meniscus, aka the now.

The brand new proprietary 501 caliber is the epitome of opposites attracting to generate seamless harmony. Three years of development, spent largely outside the horological comfort zone, have led to a single mechanism that harnesses the power of mechanical and fluid technology. Generous dimensions and transparency prove that the result is as beautiful as it is effective. HYT loves to visualize time moving forward; the H5’s ground-breaking movement is a leap in the same direction.

A hand-winding mechanism sets a consistent pace and releases precisely the right amount of energy for two contrasting immiscible liquids to flow inside the capillary tube to represent the recent past and the near future. Visible through the sapphire case back, an intricately shaped cam offers 13 different possibilities to adjust and index the hour and minute indications, ensuring they operate as one. An over-sized, curved lever connects the movement’s collaborating elements. This orchestrates a complex chain reaction, whereby the caliber pushes against a regulating bellow with walls four times thinner than a human hair to launch time’s next twelve-hour journey. HYT is an established master at enabling art and science to share the same space.

Phantom Tranquillity

Here’s an interesting fact: At the beginning of 2019, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Baku was recognised with the prestigious global Dealer of the Year Award for outstanding sales performance in 2018, ahead of 130 Rolls-Royce dealers around the world.

That is some feat considering the first-class dealers Unique has visited, and perhaps one of the reasons why Baku was chosen to present the stunning Phantom Tranquillity for the first time in Azerbaijan, marking its debut in Eurasia.

136 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 137
138 | UNIQUE

Created for those who conceive and achieve the impossible, Tranquillity is strictly limited to just 25 examples worldwide.

“Phantom is the ultimate Rolls-Royce,” said Bayram Yaqubov, General Manager of Improtex Motors and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Baku. “We are extremely proud to see this unique Bespoke Phantom as the first on our continent on the roads in Azerbaijan soon.”

For the precious few who commission a Phantom, the realisation of their personal vision represents a moment that sees them view the world from a rare place.

“Phantom Tranquillity is a statement piece for the visionaries who push beyond accepted limits,” commented Julian Jenkins, Regional Director Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, at the presentation in Baku.

“Named and crafted to celebrate the feeling of euphoric tranquillity one achieves within the car, this unique Phantom beautifully curates objects and inspirations from worlds beyond earthly bounds.”

That may sound like some PR spin, but it’s actually true. Tranquillity’s Gallery is a design inspired by the X-Ray coded aperture masks used on the British Skylark space rocket. High energy radiation passes over and through the distinctive perforated pattern, creating a coded shadow on the layers beneath. The properties of the original radiation sources were mathematically reconstructed from this shadow and rendered in highly reflective stainless steel, 24-karat gold plating and space grade aluminium. Impressive stuff.

UNIQUE | 139

Space exploration is further evident with a first for Rolls-Royce; the incorporation of meteorite within the Volume Controller, enhanced with a polished gold grip that matches the gold finish in the Collection Gallery, creating a distinctive accent feature. This application of authentic Muonionalusta meteorite, which fell to earth in Kiruna, Sweden in 1906, is complemented by detailed engraving of the location and date of its discovery.

Inspired by the light and dark sides of the Moon, the interior colourway of Arctic White leather integrates veneer

combinations of gloss and satin, both with an exclusive metallic effect. Black gloss runs from the fascia onto all the centre consoles, while a satin finish is used for the upper glovebox and door armrests. Black gloss elements are highlighted with elegant stainless steel Pinstripes.

Bespoke Audio Speaker Frets are finished in yellow gold, complementing the additional gold elements throughout the car. These unique elements are inspired by the historic NASA ‘Voyager’ satellites that carried into space two gold records with sounds and images

that portrayed the diversity of life and culture on Earth, for any intelligent extraterrestrial life that might find them.

“When designing this car the key thing was to evoke the emotion of a serene and tranquil environment,” shared Matthew Danton, Lead Designer for Collection cars, Rolls-Royce, during the presentation.

“Distinction, leadership and genuine expression is at the heart of the Bespoke Programme. The car is regarded as a key element of one's taste and personal style, so it's only natural it's bespoke.”

Regal Rosetti

Rosetti Superyachts has created another incredible craft built to the specifications of its discerning owners

UNIQUE | 143

Rosetti Superyachts need little introduction. The luxury yacht division of Rosetti Marino Group draws on the Group’s extensive shipbuilding heritage to build stunning superyachts for the lucky few – including this bespoke design inspired by its experienced owners.

This simply gorgeous craft has Hydro Tec to thank for its modern exterior lines, interior layout and naval architecture, while the refined interior design is by BurdissoCapponi Yachts & Design – a design studio based near Rosetti Superyachts in Ravenna, Italy. The displacement explorer is designed for cruising long distances in total safety and autonomy.

The 38M EXP project is being built for experienced and discerning owners who are closely involved in all aspects of the design, construction, operation and management of the yacht. They spend long periods on board, so were looking for a yacht that offered comfort and safety in all conditions.

“The exterior design is a reflection of the yacht’s functionality and reliability, which were the key priorities for the owners,” says Sergio Cutolo, founder of Hydro Tec. “Special attention has also been paid to the crew area and to the hold volumes, both essential requirements for long voyages far from ports or marinas.”

The exterior design is classic in proportion but contemporary in style with angular lines. At the request of the owners, the designer has made the windows and openings as large as possible to bring in natural daylight and make the most of the stunning locations this yacht is sure to visit.

The main deck salon, in particular, has large aft windows and sliding doors that offer wide sea views. In addition, two large side sliding doors provide access to the cutaway bulwarks on the side walkways. The space is divided into two main areas: a veranda-style seating area towards the stern and the dining area.

On the starboard side, a custom-designed wine cellar acts as a divider between the guest areas and the owner’s stateroom, which is spacious and well distributed with a fixed side balcony accessible through a sliding glass door. The clients chose this solution because it can be used without requiring help from the crew, thus ensuring greater privacy.

On the lower deck are four guest cabins (two doubles and two twin singles) that are comfortably generous in size and well appointed. The upper deck lounge is served by a service pantry and the integrated bridge is equipped with a large office area and adjacent captain's cabin.

The sun deck is especially wide and made for socializing. It hosts a large dining table as well as a corner bar with high stools, Jacuzzi with waterfall feature, and two showers on the sides. The area is protected forward by a sliding windbreak door.

The forward area on the lower deck includes laundry, ironing room and storage space accessible directly from the crew quarters.

144 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 145

The interior design stems from the close collaboration with the owners, who clearly expressed their tastes and requirements from the beginning.

“Following the initial meetings, it became evident that the staircase would become the centrepiece of the project as the central functional and stylistic core with a character that is carried throughout the whole interior,” comment BurdissoCapponi Yachts & Design.

“In fact, the stairway is conceived as an architectural base that becomes a recurring element of the project, as does the interplay of white lacquer, light and dark woods.”

Alcoves and niches on board have been created on request of the owners to house various works of art.

“The 38M EXP fully embodies the philosophy of Rosetti Superyachts, which

is to apply the extensive shipbuilding experience of Rosetti Marino to the superyacht sector,” says Fulvio Dodich, RSY CEO and partner. “This experience shines through the project in every detail, from the exterior and interior design to the careful selection of equipment and overall construction quality.”

Construction of the new 38M EXP is on schedule for her spring 2021 delivery.

INSTITUT AUF DEM ROSENBERG, SWITZERLAND

THANKS TO ITS ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY

SPANNING MORE THAN 130 YEARS, ARTISANS OF EDUCATION INSTITUT AUF DEM ROSENBERG ARE

WELCOMING STUDENTS AGED 6 – 19 YEARS OLD FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO EXPERIENCE AN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WITH AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET, WHICH CHALLENGES THE STEREOTYPICAL EDUCATIONAL PARADIGM.

Opened in 1889, the Institut auf dem Rosenberg draws on its rich history of excellence in teaching to offer students a truly exceptional programme of activities beyond the core curriculum, designed to prepare them for a future world, where digitalisation and globalisation will irrevocably alter the world as we know it today. Rosenberg prides itself on providing a truly holistic education beyond the classroom preparing the students for roles of leadership in the 21st Century.

Rosenberg has been in the Gademann family for four generations, and speaking with that experience, Headmaster Bernhard Gademann takes an unorthodox stance to education commenting: “Schools kill creativity instead of enabling it; they also tend to fear individuality whereas we focus on educating forming personalities. In

a world in which artificial intelligence has an increasingly prominent role, the last human bastion are our ingenious minds and our unique ability to collaborate. Yet, schools do not adapt quickly enough, with teaching styles and content remaining almost unchanged for the past 120 years. We challenge this stereotype and refuse to run an educational establishment like a factory line. Our unique Talent & Enrichment Programme offers a completely new perspective, preparing the first truly enlightened generation for leadership in an exciting new world.”

The ‘Talent & Enrichment Programme’ offers over 40 courses in a diverse array of fields including product design, biotechnology, hotel management, digital art, international law and artificial intelligence to name a few, along with a rich sports programme of 30 activities.

Rosenberg focuses on the personal strengths and ambitions of each student and carefully tracks their individual development. Small classes, averaging eight students with a teacher to student ratio of 1:3 ensures that each student meets their full academic potential. Rosenberg’s wide choice of academic courses is unique not only amongst private boarding schools in Switzerland, but also the world. The academic offering extends across 5 different options, including British GCE Advanced Levels (A Levels), the American High School Diploma, AP Examinations, the IB DP (International Baccalaureate) as well as the GIB (German International Baccalaureate), so a curriculum can be chosen that suits the individual.

The school has strong ties and partnerships with thoughts leaders, prominent companies and organisations across different sectors to ensure the content being taught is up to date and relevant; they also offering inspiring trips abroad. They describe their culture as a ‘130-year-old start-up’ and they boast an Innovation Department ensuring that research and development are at the heart of everything they do, positioning them as world leaders in forward-thinking education.

Bernhard Gademann summarises the current status quo in education and Rosenberg’s forward-thinking alternative approach: “The disconnect between skills taught in traditional schools and the requirements to succeed in the professional world has never been this extensive. With change taking an exponential trajectory, this gap will only grow bigger. Rosenberg bridges this gap by merging the academic world with the learning requirements of the 21st Century.”

Q&A WITH BERNHARD GADEMANN, HEADMASTER OF INSTITUT AUF DEM

Institut auf dem Rosenberg is an artisan of education and a family business of more than 130 years, and over four generations of the Gademann family. How does this heritage influence your approach to teaching your students?

When speaking about tradition, we think about perpetual values. Acting responsibly, showing respect for others and understanding the meaning of one’s privileged start in life are among the virtues that we continue to pass on to our students since over a century. As an institution, we are proud of our own heritage and traditions, but preparing young people for positions of leadership in ten or twenty years from now, we understand that we must continue to innovate, providing relevant and contemporary education today.

When our students graduate from Rosenberg, they combine these values with a profound understanding of how the world is interconnected and a sense of optimism for the opportunities, as well as the challenges of the future.

How can Rosenberg prepare my child to become the leader of my family business and a world leader?

The vast majority of our students have an entrepreneurial family background, and we consciously nurture this state of mind in a unique community.

We collaborate with businesses from small start-ups to big corporates, leading technical universities as well as thought leaders from across industries in order to provide a unique learning environment that is both inspiring and stimulating. These wide-ranging collaborations ensure that our education is always relevant and understood in a crucial reallife context, which is imperative for children and young adults today.

Our unique Talent & Enrichment programme features over 30 different courses that allow our students to immerse in a world of art, robotics,

entrepreneurship and public speaking to name just a few. These experiences open horizons and support their development process beyond classroom education.

At Rosenberg, we encourage an entrepreneurial spirit and believe that fostering this mentality from an early age, rather than waiting until university, is vital for students to develop an aptitude for leadership.

Will my child reach his or her full potential for the 21st century in Rosenberg classrooms?

Our teams are true artisans of education who apply their experience and skills with great care. Each child is an individual and consequently requires individual guidance and support to discover, develop and nurture talent.

At Rosenberg’s Creative Lab, a world first-of-its-kind facility to nurture creativity, students experiment with new technologies while experts are at hand to guide and support students’ projects.

Inspiration is provided through Talent & Enrichment courses and includes weekend trips to leading companies in Europe as well as lectures and workshops run by guest lecturers such as blockchain technology experts or professors from Harvard University.

The unmatched depth of education is provided at Rosenberg through a wide range of academic pathways. This, combined with a truly stimulating programme, enables students to reach their full potential and foster an entrepreneurial mindset for the 21st century.

What benefits are there at Rosenberg from having such a low teacher to student ratio?

We don’t run our school like a factoryline and having a staff to student ratio of 3:1 allows us to provide the right specialists in each academic field. It is a broad understanding that we are all unique as humans, favouring different learning styles and methods. Having the necessary headcount means that our teachers have the resources to spend time with each student to ensure that their talents and aspirations are met.

154 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 155
156 | UNIQUE

Truly unique to Rosenberg is the Individual Development Plan – IDP®, designed to ensure that student’s interests and ambitions are continuously matched by our experts to their aspirations for university and beyond. Our student’s learning experience is further augmented through the school’s proprietary IDP® App.

How do Rosenberg’s sporting activities enable students to succeed in business?

At Rosenberg, we believe that a healthy body and awareness of one’s self is a core requirement for a balanced and successful lifestyle. As such, all students are expected to engage in sporting activities at a minimum of two times per week.

Our student can choose from over 20 different sporting activities, including tennis, horse-riding, football and fencing, to name just a few. All activities are led by professional instructors providing the right level from beginners to competitive athletes.

The school’s Health & Fitness Club is fully equipped with the latest Technogym® appliances and permanently staffed with a team of personal trainers to provide professional guidance for all workouts. The Health & Fitness Club also offers nutritional advice and liaises with the school kitchen to carefully plan individual dietary requirements.

Concours of Elegance

Watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne knows how to curate a spectacular event, as these images testify.

UNIQUE | 159

As headline sponsor of the Concours of Elegance 2019, the gardens at Hampton Court Palace – famously home to King Henry VIII – were taken over for three days by 60 of the rarest and finest classic cars. Motors on display ranged from pioneering classics to the latest luxury sports cars.

Among the attendees, were Alexander Kraft, Wei Koh, Justin Hast, Tracey Llewellyn, Rob Nudds, Tom Chamberlin, Joseph Bullmore, Shane Kurup, Harry Jarman, James Gurney, and A. Lange & Sohne CEO Wilhelm Schmid.

During a truly special programme of events, a pre-concours car tour including a visit to the 70-year-old boatyard and workshop of Peter Freebody & Co. through to the ERA Shed, at The Motoring Village, which contained a fascinating collection of racing and record-breaking cars.

The itinerary also took in the historic Cliveden House, and the classy eaterie The Little Angel, as the guests enjoyed a weekend packed with the finer things in life.

In the ‘House of A. Lange’, visitors could continue to explore the craftsmanship behind the current timepiece collection, observe the creation of a manufacture calibre, and even put their own artisanal skills into practice at the watchmaking workshop.

At a gala dinner on opening night, A. Lange & Söhne presented the penultimate model in the ten-piece ‘25th Anniversary’ series, celebrating the milestone of the LANGE 1.

Limited to just 25 timepieces in white gold, it features a blue-printed argenté-coloured dial and a lunar disc in white gold with hand-engraved stars, a hand-stitched blue alligator leather strap with a grey seam.

Dresden watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange laid the cornerstone of Saxony’s precision watchmaking industry when he established his manufactory in 1845. His precious pocket watches remain highly coveted among collectors. The brand nearly disappeared after the Second World War but in 1990, Ferdinand’s great grandson, Walter Lange, started over.

160 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 161

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Walter saw an opportunity to make his dream come true. Together with entrepreneur Günter Blümlein, he wanted to breathe new life into the venture that his great-grandfather had started in 1845. In Glashütte, the plan was to once again craft world-class timepieces under the A. Lange & Söhne brand.

A quarter of a century has elapsed since this vision became reality. On 24 October 1994, at the residential palace in Dresden, A. Lange & Söhne presented the first four wristwatches of the new era – among them the LANGE 1.

Today, Lange crafts only a few thousand wristwatches exclusively in gold or platinum each year, each with a proprietary movement assembled by hand.

Lange & Söhne has been main sponsor of the Concours of Elegance since 2018, and is also involved with other renowned classic car events around Europe.

For the brand, it is about engaging with like-minded individuals who appreciate excellent craftsmanship, while working to preserve cultural values. We couldn’t agree more.

Wipeout DEMENTIA

Some of Australia’s biggest corporates have come together to tackle one of the most significant global public health challenges – through surfing

164 | UNIQUE

The popular image of bronzed, outdoors-loving and sports-mad Aussies is well-known the world over. But this portrait belies the fact that statistics show Australians are actually on the lower end of the global scale when it comes to participation in physical activity.

This lack of exercise and movement explains why many Australians are prone to an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, diabetes and depression. Significantly, all of these conditions are also risk factors for dementia, with some studies suggesting that physically inactive individuals have an 80% greater risk of being afflicted.

By contrast, physical exercise has a positive and protective effect on brain function, not only reducing risk factors, but increasing neuroplasticity – or in other words, the ability of the brain to form new connections and pathways throughout an individual's life.

A loss of neuroplasticity can start relatively early in life, with the brain abnormalities that lead to dementia known to start at least 20-30 years before the disease becomes manifest, suggesting

that behaviours in young and mid adulthood can have a significant impact on brain health in old age.

It’s estimated that more than 445,000 Australians have been diagnosed with dementia, which has now surpassed heart disease to become the leading cause of death for Australian women and the second leading cause of death overall in the country. It’s also the leading cause of death in the United Kingdom.

The cost of dementia-related conditions in Australia was over $15 billion in 2018 – a figure that is projected to increase to $36 billion by 2056, by which time more than three million Australians are likely to be affected.

Globally, this health challenge has an enormous economic impact – every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia, with nearly 50 million people affected worldwide and the annual cost of dementia currently estimated to be $818 billion. Worryingly, the number of people suffering from dementia is predicted to increase to 131.5 million people by 2050.

As it stands, an increased investment

in research is the only hope for the development of medical interventions to delay, stop or reverse dementia. This is why, in 2015, the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA), a research institute at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, launched the Wipeout Dementia campaign – a biannual surf carnival. Taking advantage of the Australian penchant for beaches and surfing, the event’s goal is to raise awareness of and crucial funding for dementia, in support of The Dementia Momentum, an initiative to advance large-scale, big data research into prevention of dementia.

The driving force behind Wipeout Dementia is CHeBA’s Heidi Douglass, who also launched The Dementia Momentum – where she had the chance to work with Richard Grellman AM, a former partner at KPMG and the former Chairman of the Association of Surfing Professionals (International) Limited.

Sadly, Richard’s wife, Suellen, was diagnosed with advanced young onset Alzheimer’s disease and has required full-time high-level care since 2014. As someone deeply impacted by dementia, Richard quickly agreed to become the spokesman for The Dementia Momentum – and later the ambassador for Wipeout Dementia.

UNIQUE | 165

“Through my work with CHeBA, I came to appreciate how much work needs to go in to researching ways to prevent the onset of dementia, and how little people fully understand this condition,” says Richard.

“Many families experience the sense of helplessness, frustration and sadness that comes with knowing that there is currently no known cure.

“As such, there is a critical need for partnerships between research and business in order for us to tackle the extraordinary challenge posed by dementia.”

As someone with strong connections in the surfing world, Richard knew where to look for an answer.

“Many of my contacts in the executive sphere are keen surfers and so I saw an opportunity to promote the link between physical activity and dementia across the corporate sector,” he explains.

“This is how Wipeout Dementia came to life, and thankfully I’ve had the support of some great friends and organisations along the way.

“I’ve been extremely encouraged by the enhanced awareness and attention Wipeout Dementia has generated throughout the corporate community.”

Wipeout Dementia’s participants come from across Sydney’s corporate landscape, with entrants of all ages and

surfing ability undergoing a rigorous four-week strength and conditioning program that culminates in a team ‘surf off’ to promote the relationship between physical activity and brain health.

To date, over 100 corporates have participated in the campaigns, with major partners including Morgans and Kennards Hire, as well as support from a range of organisations including Colliers International Residential, Cunninghams, Aoyuan International, Ray White Commercial, SkiJapan and more.

Since May 2015, Wipeout Dementia has held nine extremely successful surf carnivals, with over $1.3 million raised for CHeBA’s research. The event has even received support from some famous names, including former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, former NSW State Premier Mike Baird and 1978 world surfing champion Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew.

In fact, Wipeout Dementia has been such a success that it has also generated a spin-off, with the Australian property industry now holding its own version of the event, organised by Peter Clemesha, experienced surfer and director of Australian property development, investment and advisory firm Avenor.

For Peter, the topic of dementia also hits close to home. After the condition claimed his uncle in 2016, Peter was inspired to do something to prevent other families being affected in the same way.

After seeing a Wipeout Dementia video shown at a property luncheon hosted by Colliers in September 2016, Peter had the idea to bring some of his high-flying property industry colleagues and friends together to help the cause. He rallied representatives from across the industry, including m3property, The GPT Group, LendLease, Abacus Property Group, Ray White Commercial, Haigs Builder Brokers, Stamford Capital – and even his daughter Ali Clemesha, representing Australian media organisation NewsCorp.

Capitalising on the runaway success of the first three Wipeout Dementia campaigns, which had been held at popular Sydney surf beach Queenscliff, Peter launched the inaugural property industry event in November 2016 –but this time at a different location, Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.

“After I became aware of Wipeout Dementia, I was quickly able to bring in some friends – all of whom are senior executives working in property – who agreed to become involved in a property industry surfing event,” says Peter.

“Holding the event at Bondi instantly gave it a high profile – as one of Sydney’s premier tourist destinations and most well-known beaches, Bondi always draws a crowd.

"The appeal of Wipeout Dementia is that the entirety of funds raised go directly to research at CHeBA, and at the same time, we're increasing general knowledge in the community about this disease while having fun doing something we love.”

Peter says interest and participation has grown each year since the first event, with the November 2018 edition becoming the most successful Wipeout Dementia to date – raising $155,000.

Indeed, with property having a long history of generating wealth, many in the industry are increasingly looking for ways to give back, he explains.

“Getting people involved in a surfing event to raise money for dementia wasn’t a hard sell,” he says.

“Many companies are trying to help the community in meaningful ways – they want to be good corporate citizens, so in a lot of respects, the timing was perfect for us to launch a property-focussed edition of Wipeout Dementia.

“The event has now set the benchmark for other industries to join Wipeout Dementia and lead a new wave of support for the campaign.”

The expansion of Wipeout Dementia into the corporate world has been vital for increasing the profile of not only the event, but also dementia’s effect on the population, adds Richard.

“We used to expect the government to pick up the tab for necessary funding, but the reality is that now it’s the corporates who have the capacity to shoulder the cost and burden of research into dementia,” he says.

“Most corporates these days have a conscience and recognise the need for collaboration between the corporate world and dementia researchers in this regard.

“Without corporate support across industries we will struggle to turn the tide on this burgeoning socio-economic issue, so we’re proud to have formed relationships with a range of philanthropic supporters, such as Colliers and other corporates in the property industry, who are playing a major role in changing the future of dementia incidence and care.”

Globally, there have been some positive moves in the fight against dementia in recent years, with Microsoft supremo Bill Gates announcing in 2017 that he would donate $50 million of his personal wealth to the Dementia Discovery Fund and another $50 million to fund other innovative ideas.

The announcement came only a few years after David Cameron, former Prime Minister of UK, put dementia research on

the global agenda, championing public funding for dementia research – an initiative that seems to be increasingly replicated in the private sector after Gates’ bold initiative.

However, there is still a long road ahead in terms of managing the global social and economic impact of dementia, which is set to increase as the population ages. A key indicator is the boom in aged care development across the globe.

While these nascent facilities are designed to accommodate the world’s ageing population, there also needs to be strong consideration given to the ever-increasing demand for specialist dementia facilities and care within these developments, according to leading academic and CHeBA Co-Director, Professor Henry Brodaty.

“Currently more than 52% of the 180,000 permanent residents in Australian residential aged care facilities have been officially diagnosed with dementia,” says Henry.

“The true prevalence is much higher, possibly exceeding 70%, and the projections are clear that this figure will rapidly increase – over 440,000 Australians in total now have dementia and this is set to almost triple to 1.1 million in the next 40 years.

“If we have to triple bed numbers to cope with the ageing population, Australia will need 360,000 new beds in this timeframe – or approximately 750 new beds per month, with 500 of those beds required for people with dementia.

"This is why there remains a clear need for more resources to be directed to researching prevention and early intervention of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.”

Thankfully, CHeBA is leading the charge in multidisciplinary research into the ageing brain, quickly gaining a status as an international centre of excellence in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of age-related disorders – particularly Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

CHeBA is actively working to improve the health care of individuals affected by these diseases, with personal stories such as those of Richard and Peter inspiring CHeBA’s academics to continue to expand their research across the full spectrum of dementia. This has seen their work move beyond drug treatments, to include early diagnosis and prevention strategies in mid-life to reduce the modifiable risk factors associated with dementia.

“Advancing research will undoubtedly help millions of people in the future, but in the short-term, the key message is for people to get active to reduce their risk of dementia,” says Richard.

“The one good thing about dementia is that there is a lot we can do to help overcome it –so we should.”

If you’d like to get involved, the property industry will be holding its fourth Wipeout Dementia event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Friday 22 November 2019. To find out more, go to:

VACHERON CONSTANTIN

There is good news for watch lovers and those that appreciate the finest art and history, with a new partnership between Vacheron Constantin and the Louvre museum.

UNIQUE | 169

Throughout its rich history, Swiss luxury watchmaker Vacheron Constantin has demonstrated a deep commitment to art and culture, embodied in numerous partnerships. Its relationship with the world-famous Louvre museum in Paris is a natural extension of this celebration of beauty and Vacheron Constantin’s concern for the conservation, preservation and transmission of heritage. Future projects will include collaborations inspired by the collections of the Louvre.

Having supported the expert restoration of the clock named La Création du Monde (a masterpiece of 18th century precision horology presented to King Louis XV in 1754 and deposited by the Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon in the Louvre) in 2016, Vacheron Constantin is signing a new partnership with the French museum.

Louis Ferla, CEO Vacheron Constantin, said: "I enthusiastically welcome this collaboration between our two institutions, both centuries-old yet firmly rooted in the 21st century, as evidenced by the favour they enjoy among an audience of connoisseurs. Our Maison has long since stood out in terms of both artistic commitment and cultural patronage. With the Louvre, we are beginning a very promising new chapter. We could not have dreamt of a better partner for a constructive dialogue on the themes of art and culture.”

This partnership with the Louvre is a natural continuation of Vacheron Constantin’s artistic and cultural commitment, encompassing areas inherent in centuriesold institutions for which archiving, conservation and restoration are decisive factors. This attachment to the splendours of the past and the transmission of knowledge also means profound respect for artistic crafts, which are essential in Vacheron Constantin's creations as well as in the activities of the Louvre.

On the strength of these shared skills that will prove naturally conducive to discussions on artisanal practices and techniques, the two institutions have sealed a partnership that will take the form of horological projects inspired by the Louvre's masterpieces. Vacheron Constantin and the Louvre will also collaborate on creative projects aimed at promoting art, creation and beauty through a multicultural approach.

Jean-Luc Martinez, President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, said: "The Louvre has always been a vibrant place, inspiring creative talents of every era. I am delighted that Vacheron Constantin, a Maison committed to the patient and demanding workmanship involved in Haute Horlogerie, now finds in the Louvre a repertoire and techniques that reinforce and magnify its concern for beauty.”

A former royal palace, of which the first stone was laid more than eight centuries ago, the Louvre is a universal museum whose collections span nine millennia and five continents. Among the 620,000 works it safeguards, some are universally admired, such as the Mona Lisa, the Victory of Samothrace or the Venus de Milo. With 10.2 million visitors in 2018, the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world.
