The International Spa Association (ISPA) recently reported, “Overall revenue climbed 5.8%, reaching $22.5 billion among its global members in 2024.” According to the ISPA, “85% of spa-goers view spa visits as self-care, and two-thirds name stress reduction as a key motivator for visiting a spa.”

In Miami, homebuyers have come to expect spa and wellness amenities in most highvalue properties. Julijana Rose, REALTOR® and Marketing Director for the Nelson Gonzalez Team, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty, shed light on Miami’s high-end market. “Many luxury homebuyers are very much into wellness, so they appreciate having a cold plunge and an entire wellness suite in the privacy of their home.”
“Home gyms, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms have been in demand for years, but cold plunges are a more recent trend,” Rose said. For example, a $30.95 million waterfront home listed by Nelson Gonzalez boasts a full wellness suite, featuring a cold plunge, sauna, steam shower, spa tub, and a well-appointed gym.
As with so many other trends, “The desire for wellness living right in your home evolved from COVID,” said Linda Chain, a Las Vegas REALTOR® at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nevada Properties, Chain Koentopp Group.
Elizabeth Reed, Broker Associate at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, shared insights about Rancho Santa Fe, an exclusive area of San Diego known for its expansive equestrian properties: “Luxury inhome spas are now the norm for homeowners reimagining and remodeling prized properties.” In nearby coastal Del Mar, a client is currently building a large luxury home and considering a five-star spa as part of the design. “Dedicated wellness amenities—the higher end the better—is what buyers want in San Diego’s luxury homes,” Reed noted.
Kohler, a leader in the kitchen and bath industry, recently partnered with Dr. Jonathan Leary, Founder and CEO of Remedy Place, the world’s first social wellness club, to develop more luxury self-care products and experiences. This collaboration resulted in the Kohler x Remedy Place Ice Bath, a sleek addition to any home that debuted for a cool $15,000.

Zach Hillesland, Senior Brand Manager of Kohler Wellness, pointed to the everexpanding audience for ice baths. “Athletes have been doing ice baths for years, and it recently caught on with the health influencer crowd.” Hillesland revealed Kohler’s target demographic as “consumers between 30-45, on the cutting edge of wellness.”
Some participants indulge in a steamy sauna before a cold plunge to enhance the wellness experience. Saunas and infrared saunas are another prominent wellness amenity in luxury homes, believed to potentially boost the immune system and encourage deep relaxation.
In addition to over-the-top resorts, opulent casinos, and celebrity-heavy nightclubs, Las Vegas has a number of top-rated spas, catering to guests who prioritize wellness routines at home and want to maintain them while traveling. The Lapis Spa at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas measures 55,000 square feet, while Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace boasts a Roman bath complex complete with an Arctic Ice Room where actual snow falls inside.
Las Vegas’ ultra-luxury homeowners enjoy their personal five-star spa experiences in their mega residences. “We are seeing wellness experiences in most newly built high-end homes in communities such as The Ridges at Summerlin,” said Chain. “Most custom homes include infrared saunas and dedicated massage rooms. For the ultra-luxury buyer, the in-home spa is a box that must be checked.” A high-priced listing of Chain’s has an infrared sauna in the primary marble bathroom.
Ashlee Neshkoff, a REALTOR® at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nevada Properties, has a $22 million listing in Henderson, a Las Vegas suburb. At 17,000 square feet, it features a large underground “car museum” with a car elevator. However, the resort-style spa is also attracting attention and includes a Jacuzzi, steam/dry saunas, and a gym. “At the higher end, it is all about the “wow” factor. Resort-style spas are what that [high-end] buyer wants, from full massage rooms to cold plunge baths,” Neshkoff said.

In addition to attracting buzzworthy chefs and respected winemakers, Oregon’s lively food scene supports a thriving craft beer industry.
From Portland’s trendy gastropubs and the Willamette Valley’s world-class pinot noir to morel mushroom hunting along the Deschutes River, Oregon ranks among America’s most exciting destinations for gastronomic delights. Abundant wild game and pristine local seafood reinforce the Beaver State’s culinary bona fides, all easily washed down with a cold one from one of the many craft breweries.
Oregon is home to more than 300 brewpubs, breweries, and taprooms, generating nearly $9 billion in economic output. “Craft beer, which relies on local products and small businesses, is part of our identity and shapes how people think of Oregon,” said Sam Pecoraro, President of the Oregon Brewers Guild’s board of directors. Pecoraro, the brewmaster at Portland’s Von Ebert Brewing, reported that the state’s brewers tend to express their personalities through innovative concepts, memorable beer names, and unique packaging.
Entrepreneur and journalist Lisa Morrison— also known as the “Beer Goddess”— chronicles Oregon breweries in her book Craft Beers of the Pacific Northwest. She reported, “Many people consider Northern California the birthplace of ‘microbreweries,’ as they called them back then. But I consider Oregon the nursery, because so many small breweries launched in those early days, and many of them still exist.” The writer, who is also Co-Owner of Belmont Station, a prominent beer retailer and taproom in Portland, said, “Craft beer is everywhere in Oregon. You’re really hard-pressed to find an establishment that doesn’t serve at least some craft, usually local, beer.”
Morrison, an Oregon Beer Awards Hall of Fame inductee, said, “I often harken Oregonians’ relationship to craft beer to that of a happy, longtime marriage. It’s comfortable. We’ve had a lot of good times and weathered some bad times.” She mused, “At this point, we
might even take it for granted, but we love it to the moon and back.” Morrison said of Oregon brewers’ unabashed independent streak, “We’re a state of people with a strong tradition of challenging the norms, championing the little guys, and we’re willing to take chances—even on something as seemingly innocuous as beer.”
Oregon’s impact on the beer industry, however, extends far beyond its borders, as 95% of all hops used in domestic production are grown in the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Fully embracing the state’s agricultural heritage is Rogue, a craft brewery founded in Newport. “The Willamette Valley has always been an important part of Oregon’s brewing history, and we’re thrilled to celebrate its flavors in a way that feels uniquely Rogue,” said Brewmaster Joel Shields. The brewery recently released a cherry-flavored wheat ale inspired by the Valley’s famous cherry orchards.
Located in scenic Cannon Beach is Public Coast Brewing Co., where Brewmaster and trained chef Will Leroux applies a culinary approach to beermaking, supported by the brewery’s own 40-acre farm that yields everything from hops to eight varieties of blueberries. Beaverton’s Binary Brewing produces a repertoire of playfully named and labeled beers—consider Pinball Pils, Motherboard Milk Stout, and Virtual Redality Red Ale—that reflect whimsical technology and gaming concepts. Despite the brewery’s high-tech theme, Binary’s approach represents a more retro-inspired reaction to avant-garde beermaking. “Our vision for the brewery was driven by our love for simple, classic craft styles,” reported Co-Founder Joshua Johnson. Elsewhere, some breweries, such as 7 Devils in Coos Bay, sound irreverent, while a more spiritual approach is found at Benedictine Brewery, operated by monks at Mount Angel Abbey.
Portland, where culinary artisans converge to create the epicenter of the state’s “foodiesphere,” boasts more than 80 breweries and holds beer festivals throughout the year. While she offers praise for breweries on the Oregon Coast and around the town of Bend, Morrison added, “For diversity and sheer numbers, you can’t beat the Portland metro.” No wonder the state’s largest city has earned the nickname “Beervana.”

Surfing represents the ultimate connection to the ocean, but some surfers now hang ten on electrified boards that elevate the experience.
The electric revolution permeates every conceivable mode of transportation, from sports cars to semitrailers, flying taxis to scooters. Now, surfers are even arriving at the beach with electric boards that deliver a unique experience, one that is attracting new devotees to the pastime. Combining innovative engineering with the laid-back vibes of surfing, these futuristic boards are gaining popularity from Malibu, California, as far as the Portuguese coast, and beyond.
The concept of motorized surfboards first emerged in the 1930s, but the advent of quiet, sustainable electric power has generated considerable buzz over the past 15 years. Jetboards, which achieve faster speeds, feature integrated electric motors with handheld controls. Electric foilboards (or efoils) are motorized surfboards with under-mounted hydrofoils that allow surfers to literally float above the water. Because electrification allows for less dependence on waves, efoiling is popular in calmer bodies of water, for example, Lake Mead, outside Las Vegas.
Inspired by California’s surf culture and Scandinavia’s sleek aesthetics, LIND is an American-Swedish manufacturer of electric jetboards. LIND’s Canvas is a jetboard with unrivaled power, cutting-edge technology—50 sensors and microprocessors help optimize performance—and refined design. Despite that advanced technology, LIND Co-Founder and CEO Anders Dellson reported that Canvas faithfully retains the nostalgic spirit of oldschool surfing. “[Co-founder] Alex Lind’s vision was to create an electric surfboard that pays respect to traditional craftsmanship, yet is seamlessly integrated with state-of-the-art technology,” he said. Canvas, which starts at $24,950, delivers speeds up to 40 miles per hour and possesses a built-in lithium-ion battery to accommodate longer rides.
“The spirit of surfing has been our north star,” stated Dellson, who conceded that the challenge is maintaining surfboard craftsmanship and design while integrating a nearly 30-horsepower electric drivetrain. He added that mastering the board is much easier than one might imagine, and that most beginners are standing within five minutes and carving within two sessions. “The product delivers instant gratification due to a minimal learning curve that allows you to quickly develop your skillset and personal style,” Dellson said. “We’ve created an entirely new feeling on the water. A good wave may last a number of seconds, while our board offers a similar feeling for up to 45 minutes.” LIND continues to expand and is currently establishing relationships with leading surf schools in California, Florida, and the Mediterranean.
Surfing was part of Hawaiian culture centuries before the islands became a state, and e-surfing builds on that heritage.
At Maui’s calm, uncongested Sugar Beach, Aloha EFoils offers instructions for efoiling, which Owner Steve Domerego insisted is much easier to master than jetboarding. “You can learn it in a single lesson,” he said, “I’ve had students from nine to 80, and 99.9% of them feel absolutely exhilarated.” Aloha EFoils sells Lift Foils, which the manufacturer Domerego refers to as “the Apple of efoils.”
Nick Leason, Co-Founder and CEO of Puerto Rico-based Lift Foils, stated, “We put aside financial success and focus on ride perfection, to create the product that we want to own and enjoy when we’re on the water.” He added, “Our products are built by engineers who are riders first and foremost.”
Inspired by the emergence of e-surfing in Spain, Erik Tamayo established Electric Surf Sports (ESS) in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 2016. The company is the largest North American partner of Lift Foils and favors Awake jetboards, but also sells other electrified water vehicles, such as underwater scooters. “Efoils offer something jetboards can’t, and that’s bang for the buck in terms of ride time,” said Tamayo, who noted they can accommodate up to two continuous hours on the water. “The feeling is very much akin to snowboarding on fresh powder. I’m stoked to be part of this electric rideable industry, still in its infancy.” Tamayo only expects battery life to increase and equipment costs to decrease in the future.
The Maldives is a mecca for diving, snorkeling, and surfing, and the beaches of this Indian Ocean archipelago typically feature modest waves and shallow waters close to shore. These are ideal conditions for beginner lessons and more. Australia-based Perfect Wave Travel designs e-surfing itineraries to the Maldives and beaches on five continents. “For two decades, we’ve looked after every type of surfer and style of surfcraft,” said Chris Buykx, Perfect Wave’s Global General Manager. Noting that e-surfers have different requirements than traditional surfers, he explained, “They want plenty of room to move, light winds and smooth surface conditions—fun, rolling waves without many other surfers around.”
The resort communities along Spain’s Costa del Sol are a bastion for exotic watersports, and Seven Palms introduces foilboard and jetboard experiences in the warm Mediterranean waters of Marbella. In addition, Portugal has long been a surfing hotspot, including recordbreaking waves in Nazeré that are best left to professional daredevils. E-surfers are more likely to gravitate to calmer waters in Portugal’s Algarve region or the Lisbon Coast.

This extraordinary home in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, was designed by Seattlebased Olson Kundig, a firm renowned for discretely integrating expressions of modernism into remote, fragile habitats.
Here, the architects created a three-story “treehouse” on a densely forested site along the Pacific coast.
“The project has a relatively light, natural footprint, both in terms of the site itself, but also in using local materials that advance the next level of environmental stewardship in Costa Rica,” reports design principal Tom Kundig. The structure is clad in sustainable local teak, and the entire home embraces the jungle, with the highest level rising above the forest’s canopy to provide views of the ocean at Playa Hermosa.
The clients were passionate about both surfing and environmental preservation, so this location and design — the house is essentially a towering, open-air surfer hut — resonated with them. Emphasizing the structure’s small imprint, Kundig reports, “This allowed us to maintain a light influence on the site while engaging with the natural landscape in different ways on all three levels of the house.”
Contributing to the home’s high degree of sustainability is the nearly exclusive use of indigenous materials, which not only showcase the beauty of Costa Rica’s natural resources but eliminate the need for carbon-intensive shipping to the remote construction site. The handcrafted materials — local cenizaro wood beams complement the predominant use of teak — also introduce the beauty of Costa Rican culture into the home.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) honors best practices through Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), with different levels of certifications (e.g., Silver, Gold, Platinum). “Investors, owners, occupants, and policymakers are asking for high-performing buildings that reduce emissions, mitigate climate risk, provide healthy productive spaces, positively impact communities, and protect natural systems,” explains Sarah Zaleski, USGBC’s chief products officer.

footprint, and some can also elevate aesthetics. Bamboo, with its unique grain, is favored by many designers for flooring and millwork. Rammed earth, a product with ancient origins consisting of compacted soils and sands, creates a visually compelling effect. Biophilic design integrates plant life into architecture through earthen roofs, forested terraces and vine-covered façades. In addition to its carbon-reducing capabilities, celebrity architects are discovering the aesthetic potential of biophilic design.
Colorado-based Haley Custom Homes specializes in sustainable construction practices for luxury buyers. Appealing to a local consumer base with a tradition of environmental consciousness, the company is committed to reducing construction waste, achieving net-zero energy usage, and incorporating features such as solar panels and water recapture systems. Founder Dan Fuller reports, “Sustainability in homebuilding is more than just a trend,” adding, “We incorporate energy efficiency and green building practices without compromising the aesthetics of luxury residences."
Sustainability is not limited to single-family dwellings, and greater efficiencies result when green practices are applied to larger developments, which often boast of LEED certifications in marketing campaigns. One Dalton, a Four Seasons-branded residential tower in Boston, and The St. Regis Chicago are examples of sustainable buildings from world-class architects (Henry N. Cobb and Jeanne Gang, respectively).
Morgan Franklin, a Coldwell Banker luxury agent in Boston, currently lists condominiums at One Dalton, including a 3,965-square-foot
residence priced at $11.545 million. The agent — who personally resides in a LEED Gold-certified building — confirms that such designations resonate with green-minded clients. Franklin reports, “Since the pandemic, sustainability and wellness have become important factors to buyers,” and adds, “Sustainable construction can reinforce a buyer’s decision and commitment, or instill a pride of ownership.”
Bob Hurwitz, founder and CEO of Beverly Hills-headquartered Hurwitz James Company, a global luxury real estate firm, is skeptical that sustainability drives sales. He maintains that if the upfront costs cannot be reflected in a higher purchase price, there is little financial incentive to build sustainably.
Gerard Splendore, a veteran broker at Coldwell Banker Warburg in New York, is also wary of the economics of sustainability. “Buyers lack awareness about LEED certification and sustainable materials, and don’t prioritize green living,” he reports, insisting that price, location, amenities, and monthly fees are more top-of-mind for New Yorkers.
Nonetheless, Coldwell Banker Warburg currently lists a unit in Tribeca Green, a LEED Goldcertified building in Lower Manhattan designed by acclaimed architect Robert A.M. Stern. Nearby in Battery Park City is glass-ensconced Visionaire, the first LEED Platinum condominium tower on the East Coast, where 80 percent of construction waste was recycled. The building was designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners (the firm of late celebrity architect César Pelli), responsible for sustainably built structures around the globe.
