Art & History in West Cambridge

TExperience the ultimate blend of classic and contemporary in this lavish West Cambridge estate.

ucked away on one of West Cambridge’s most distinguished streets, just moments from the cultural and academic heart of Harvard Square and the scenic beauty of the Charles River, 55 Fayerweather Street is a residence of rare distinction. The exceptional 7-bedroom estate on our cover is the product of the award-winning, Boston-based design firm, Stern McCafferty, showcasing a contemporary art gallery aesthetic fused with the timeless elegance of a 19thcentury Georgian Revival estate.

Originally constructed in 1905, the stately brick façade now meets a bold Cor-Ten steel addition of warm and earthy tones, serving as the perfect complement. Inside, the interiors achieve a pristine balance between historic elegance and modern minimalism. “Beautifully renovated to an exceptional standard, this timeless family home offers a perfect

blend of elegance, sophistication, and simplicity,” says Gail Roberts, listing agent.

"The goal was to make a practical house for a family of six, one that would be simple and modern enough to showcase their art," says designer Stern McCafferty. “The rooms were streamlined and brightened with a neutral palette and contemporary architectural details such as glass balustrades.” The most dramatic upgrade to the home was the 2-story addition, which houses the gourmet kitchen with stone countertops and Bulthaup custom cabinetry, a breakfast room, and family area on the ground floor, and the master suite on the upper level.

“A stunning mix of traditional New England charm with a contemporary flair, the home’s centerpiece is the grand foyer staircase, which gracefully opens to a mezzanine art gallery above — a favorite feature that sets the tone for the home’s

refined yet inviting character,” says Roberts. “There is quiet drama and enduring style.”

An artfully landscaped sanctuary envelops the home. Verdant gardens, a vine-draped pergola, and serene patios are designed for quiet reflection as well as lively entertaining. A multi-purpose sport court offers recreational versatility in a private, beautifully green setting. The 2-story addition boasts a Cor-Ten steel exterior, inspired by the owners’ collection of Donald Judd works in the same material. The material changes color over time due to exposure to the elements, adding a sense of ever-changing character. Every element of this property, listed by Gail Roberts and Ed Feijo (Gail Roberts, Ed Feijo & Team) has been carefully conceived with an eye for design integrity, practicality, and sophistication, making 55 Fayerweather Street a truly one-of-a-kind offering. Priced at $18,000,000.

The Textures Shaping Luxury Interiors This Fall IN TOUCH:

From opulent seating to old-world wall finishes, designers are emphasizing comfort this fall by crafting multi-sensory experiences through texture.

Raw Materials

Layered Textures

Departing from cold and impersonal interiors, designers are now gravitating toward cozy rooms and comfortable furnishings, layering different textures to create inviting, lived-in spaces.

Luxury materials and artisanal, handcrafted pieces are increasingly being incorporated into these designs as quiet luxury prevails. “Velvet is my go-to because of its plush feel and visual depth,” says Raleighbased designer, Tula Summerford. “It’s both luxurious and comfortable.”

Pairing warm and soft materials, like wool or boucle, with cool and smooth materials, like silk, can also create layers of interest and enhance the sensory experience of a room.

Through the use of earth tones and organic textures, raw materials bring warmth and tactual variety to a design. “Earth tones bring warmth to a space while allowing the neutral tones to connect with the other pieces of furniture,” shares Ten Plus Three co-founder and designer, Gonzalo Bueno. This can be seen in the firm’s recent design of a mountain home in Aspen, which combines raw materials and bespoke furniture to foster an inviting escape from the elements.

Featuring a stunning bronze chandelier by Irish artist, Niamh Barry, the great room mixes lustrous metals with organic materials to achieve a texturally rich space. Comprised of white bronze and movingui wood, a Vincent Dubourg organic table by Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery expertly blends metal and wood to bring a unique tactility to

the space and ground the design. Throughout the home, lavish materials, like shearling, goat hair, and Romo fabric, help craft a richly comfortable space.

A kitchen design by Park & Oak mixes Calacatta Borghini marble, brass elements, and custom beaded inset cabinetry to create a visually rich and dynamic space. “The hammered brass sink bowl at the coffee bar brings a tactile element that catches light beautifully,” notes designers and founders Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto. “It’s the subtle layers of brass, marble, and painted wood that work together to create a beautiful, cozy, and livable space.”

Lacquer

The revival of this bold design trend draws on lacquer’s smooth and sexy finish to instantly elevate a space. Lacquered walls in moody hues evoke a sense of sophisticated luxury while adding drama to a room. Intimate areas feel cozy, yet

elegant when painted in lacquer and are perfect for holing up in the cooler months.

Another fun way designers are incorporating lacquer? High-gloss pieces of furniture in punchy colors, which can serve as the focal point in a room or balance out softer, more muted design elements, like wood.

Textured Walls and Ceilings

Designers are tapping into texture to add depth and character to walls and ceilings. Textured wallpapers, like those made of grasscloth or flocked velvet, silk wallcoverings, and old-world wall finishes, like plaster and limewash, are having a moment in the design realm.

With its mineral-rich look, Venetian plaster — and its more subtle counterpart, Diamond plaster — is visually rich in texture and feels smooth to the touch. Limewash, on the other hand, leaves a chalky finish and adds depth to a space through tonal variation.

Wood Drenching

The design trend that feels like a warm embrace, wood drenching is capturing the imagination of designers seeking ways to add warmth and texture to a space. Enveloping a room in wood, this trend pairs wooden furniture and flooring with paneled walls and ceilings to achieve a seamless design.

Nailing this look entails choosing the right wood and balancing the design with other colors and textures. While light woods have recently dominated, darker woods, like walnut and oak, are making a comeback, favored for their warmth and richness. Designers are also mixing wood tones to create a varied, elevated look.

Spirit of the Saguaros

Amid the mystic Arizona desert, where cacti soar sky-high, this modern home makes a striking statement of its own.

Aminimalist modern residence abuts the unspoiled expanses of Saguaro National Park, where towering cacti reach for the Arizona sky. Tucson-based

DUST Architects created an indooroutdoor home whose spirit is shaped by the gentle rhythms of this environment, as fragile as it is rugged. “The client grew up here, and the design provides an opportunity to reconnect to the landscape he loves,” explains DUST Architects principal Cade Hayes.

Tucson Mountain Retreat is both timeless and stateof-the-art, constructed of rammed earth, an ancient building material consisting of compacted soil, clay or stone whose striations result in a pleasing organic aesthetic. Hayes suggests this sustainable construction approach treats the site with reverence, driven by a desire to share, not exploit, the natural environment. “The house is nestled into the landscape, among two rock outcroppings and an arroyo, and is designed to let the geology define the living space,” says Hayes. He adds, “The design is pragmatic but imbued with poetry and art that elevates the living experience.”

The approach to the home consists of a sequence of compelling concrete cubes that guides inhabitants or guests to two separate entries. A square void defines the main entry— it ultimately leads to a formidable glass-andsteel pivot door—while a narrow slit marks a bedroom entry. “This is where the landscape

National Park

Rammed earth walls blend seamlessly with the surrounding desert, echoing the hues and textures

and architecture meet, creating a meditative experience that reinforces a connection to the landscape,” explains Hayes. The sleek-lined home invites, rather than obscures, the constantly-shifting desert light, opening virtually every space to surreal views of a land ruled by the towering saguaros. DUST Architects sought to showcase that environment, rather than imposing the residence on the landscape.

The 6,000-square-foot home’s profound connection to its natural setting is woven into every detail of the design. Large floor-to-ceiling glass panels provide desert panoramas, and when fully retracted, the tenuous border between inside and out is erased. A unique steel spiral staircase co-designed by Baltimore’s PI.KL Studio—the pattern was inspired by the prickly pear cactus—leads to a rooftop deck ideal for stargazing.

Floor-to-ceiling glass panels dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, framing sweeping views of towering saguaros.

Mycelium: Leave-No-Trace Luxury

Harnessing the beauty and intelligence of mycelium to create sculptural, sustainable spaces that nourish the senses and tread lightly on the earth.

Aquiet revolution is taking root—quite literally.

Mycelium, the intricate, fibrous root structure of fungi, is emerging as one of the most sustainable and sensorially compelling materials in contemporary architecture and design. What is mycelium? “It’s the root of the fungus,” explains Stefano Babbini, CEO of Mogu, an Italian firm that transforms mycelium into artisanal flooring and acoustic surfaces. “If the mushroom is the apple,” he says, “the mycelium is the apple tree.” Beneath forest floors, this subterranean network pulses with information and nutrients. Now, its strength and sculptural versatility are being brought above ground—lending interior spaces a tactile, living quality, all with echoes of classical stonework.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, mycelium’s ecological intelligence is just as compelling. Grown from agricultural waste—sawdust, hemp, corn husks—it thrives without synthetic binders or high heat. Instead, it self-assembles, secreting enzymes that break down organic matter and

weaving it into dense, resilient forms. The result?

A material that is not only lightweight and naturally flame-retardant, but also non-toxic, biodegradable, and virtually emission-free. Mycelium offers a circular alternative to traditional construction— born from waste, shaped with minimal energy, and returned harmlessly to the earth.

Lighting That Heals The Room

Conceived by award-winning biodesigner Danielle Trofe, MushLume Lighting is grown, not built, from a blend of mycelium and hemp. “Our lampshades are grown using a living organism,” she explains. “In just a few days, the mycelium forms a dense, fibrous network that binds to the hemp, solidifying inside custom molds.” Once dried and heated, each fixture becomes an ethereal, biophilic centerpiece—understated, yet entirely unique.

Trofe’s In Stillness collection, which debuted at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in Spring of 2025, features four modular designs—adaptable as ceiling or wall fixtures. With softly diffused light and inherent

Mycelium and hemp blends organic artistry with sustainable innovation.

acoustic dampening, Mushlume fixtures are transformative for emotional wellbeing as much as space. “When we are in stillness, we quiet our minds and open our hearts,” says Trofe. “In stillness, the noise is turned down and our focus enhances to see, feel, and ultimately, to just be.”

These lights are now found in leading hospitality spaces, including the Calgary’s Westley Hotel and 1 Hotel: Brooklyn Bridge, where Hemi Pendants float in serene clusters above commu-

nal spaces. Designed to last for decades, MushLume lights also support flexibility—allowing spaces to evolve with their occupants over time. “When the product is at the end of its lifecycle, it can safely return to the Earth, adding nutrients back to the soil,” says Trofe.

Living Concrete

For architect and artist Kamilla Csegzi, mycelium functions both as a material and a co-creator. “I try to give up part of the creative control to co-create with nature,” she says. Based in New York City, Csegzi’s practice spans architecture, installation, and object design, all based in natural systems of change: evaporation, decay, sedimentation, growth.

One recent work—the Ephemeral Table, created in collaboration with design firm Fefostudio—features a sculptural mycelium base inset with openings designed to cradle custom glassware. Debuted at New York’s Collectible Design Fair, the piece is a dialogue between forest and city: part fallen birch trunk, part weathered concrete. Csegzi’s palette of prismatic forms, triangle, circle, square, ties the organic material to intentional geometry.

Her mycelium furniture evokes monumental concrete or Brutalist forms— sharp, monolithic, elemental. Yet within these solid forms, there’s unpredictability: Organic bulges interrupt crisp corners; stray textures hint at underground activity.

Growing A Pavilion

The Growing Pavilion, conceived by designer Pascal Leboucq in collaboration with Lucas De Man and Eric Klarenbeek, is a popup performance venue that has been featured at Dutch Design Week and Almere Floriade. Built entirely from biobased materials—timber, hemp, cattail, cotton, and mushroom mycelium—the Growing Pavilion offers a compelling vision for the transition to a regenerative and circular world.

The walls were grown—each mycelium panel supported by a wooden frame and sealed with a waterproof coating inspired by Mayan technology. “With every biobased material that we used, we showed the natural raw material as much as possible,” said Leboucq. The result was not only structurally sound and acoustically insulative, but also entirely reusable. Once disassembled, the components could be composted, repurposed, or regrown.

The pavilion’s curved silhouette, pale tones, and porous textures are reminiscent of eroded limestone or the ruins of a Hellenistic temple. “The stains and the natural growing texture of the mycelium is beautiful—forming a kind of organic skin instead of an evenly white wall.”

Walls That Breathe

For Mogu co-founder Maurizio Montalti, fungi are not resources to be harvested, but collaborators. “A leading partner, very tiny,” he says, “but one you are in dynamic conversation with.” By growing mycelium on organic waste like textile scraps or crop residues, Mogu creates acoustic panels as well as floor and wall tiles that are biodegradable, durable, and visually distinct.

The Mogu Acoustic collection includes sculptural wall modules like Wave, Field, and Kite, each designed to enhance both sound and atmosphere. Wave evokes snowy hillsides, soft and quiet; Field resembles aerial farmland, with subtle ridges recalling seed lines; Kite plays with geometric folds and light, forming sculptural shadows across velvety surfaces. The panels interlock in shifting patterns, creating walls that seem to breathe.

Pavilion’s

“I love the fact that the actual ‘final’ look, textures are somewhat unpredictable,” Csegzi explains. “Especially when the substrate is a mix of different kinds of elements.” That substrate often includes waste collected from local flower shops, coffee roasters, or nearby parks—creating pieces that are imbued with a sense of place and temporality.

Mogu’s floor tiles combine a strong mycelium core with plant-based resins embedded with natural pigments—coffee grounds, seaweed, even clam shells—creating subtly marbled surfaces with surprising warmth and strength.

As governments and consumers call for stricter ecological standards, and as the true costs of industrial materials become impossible to ignore, mycelium offers something radical: the possibility of luxury that leaves no trace. “Nothing is created or destroyed,” says Mogu CEO Stefano Babbini. “Everything transforms.”

Architect Kamilla Csegzi’s sculptural mycelium furniture blurs the line between organic growth and architectural geometry.

One of the most epic sunset views in Rabun County will forever be yours when enjoyed from the shores of your own private island at 1 Burton Island. This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a water-accessonly property, in the heart of Lake Burton’s coveted big basin.

With 360-degree lake and mountain views and a Yellowstone-inspired rustic elegance, the 6,186± square foot lodge lends an entirely different perspective to lakefront living. Custom-crafted from reclaimed timbers, this trilevel home is replete with old-world characteristics and frontier charm, thanks to the unique nature of the many architectural elements and materials.

It’s the skillful incorporation of hand-hewn oak siding, Tennessee fieldstone, wide-plank rough-sawn oak floors, a dramatic cupola, flanking fireplace posts from a historic home, and a moose antler chandelier complete with a buckshot hole that gives this home its unique elegance. Unseen steel structural supports anchor the home with strength and character.

An elegant entry welcomes guests from both east and west coordinates, encompassing those beautiful views, and leads to the soaring great room. An open-riser staircase with reclaimed treads and flagstone flooring connects the three levels.

With five bedrooms and nine bathrooms, this property offers many opportunities and lavish entertainment possibilities. The Viking® six-burner range in the chef’s

kitchen, dual Bosch® dishwashers, refrigerator drawers, black soapstone countertops and sinks, and two pantries further contribute to this home’s hosting potential.

Each of the home’s five bedrooms offers unique views and details. With three walls of lake views, the private owner’s suite has a stone fireplace and a barn wood-clad vaulted ceiling. Two more guest rooms with private baths are on the main level, and upstairs, there’s a clever bunk room with baths at each end. A hidden pocket door easily separates the two spaces when needed. The library with a vaulted ceiling is currently styled as another bedroom.

On the terrace level, there’s a media room with a wall of bunk beds, a kitchenette, and a laundry room. A gym mirrors the upper-level bunk room and could easily be converted into separate bedrooms with individual baths. Expansive flagstone patios wrap the home and extend the hospitality footprint. Walking trails crisscross the island and lead to the two-story, two-stall covered boathouse, wharf and swim dock, and a putting green.

To ensure worry-free living on this island paradise, a selfcontained fire suppression system, copper-clad Kolbe® windows, antique terracotta tile, LiteTouch® lighting system, an extensive security system that can detect island intruders, 1GB fiber optic internet, slate roof, lightning rods, and a generator are part of this package.
