Magazines for Schools is an affordable, easy to use subscription service that brings the entertainment and educational benefits of magazines into the classroom.

Reading for pleasure is an important aspect of learning. We feel that there is a positive relationship between the amount of reading a child does, the enjoyment of reading and the attainment of that child. However, some children find it difficult to discover reading materials that appeal to them.

Non-fiction can often be difficult to find at an appropriate reading level, whereas magazines occupy a space that allows for smaller, bite size amounts of content that can be read at any time. The magazines we use are highly educational and fun, with elements that the whole class will enjoy.

Who are Magazines for Schools?

Magazines for Schools is a new subscription service for teachers and schools, providing quality learning resources without the need for hours of planning. Every month multiple copies of a specially chosen independent educational magazine will be supplied, along with a bespoke lesson plan that can be used with the selected magazines. All magazines are suitable for primary school children, and are colourful and interesting which help get children excited about learning.

We have five magazines that we work with including CUBiC, Anorak, Eco Kids Planet, Horrible Histories and Brilliant Brainz. Each is highly educational but in different and often very varied subjects.

Each lesson plan has a slide show that can be easily adapted including notes and recommendations. The lesson plans are made for Key Stage 2 and use key assessment focuses to guide them. Inside each pack you receive reading comprehensions and formatted questions that give you those hard to find non-fiction passages that students can engage with.

Working with schools Following the management of subscriptions for a school’s library and reading areas, we trialled ‘Magazines for Schools’ with Wingrove Primary School in Newcastle, as a learning resource for the classroom.

After demonstrating our concept to the teachers, we listened to their valued feedback. We discussed how teachers want lesson plans that are ready to go, that are easily adaptable, and that can be placed into their plans for the week.

They also want lesson plans that touch on key assessment focuses, with a variety of subjects that engage with the fantastic content inside the magazines.

Our tailored solution puts teachers in control. Each month we provide teaching presentation slides for lessons along with a letter that gives some suggestions on how our magazines and lesson plans can be used further. Teachers can choose to do the lessons in any order and can adapt the lesson slides to suit their teaching style by simply copying the slides into their own plans for the day.

We also ensure that we have both a lower and an upper key stage 2 reading comprehension in every issue, so teachers have access to high quality, non-fiction reading content for their class.

This is something many teachers have stated can be difficult to find.

Magazines for Schools ensures that the magazines purchased get used to their maximum potential, giving students the opportunity to really engage with non-fiction reading, and provide high quality lesson material that teachers can use any time.
