LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP REGIONALISM

Coming Home. Two simple words. Many profound meanings.

As we reflect on 2024 and the positive impacts we made across our community (and beyond), "Coming Home" was a constant theme.

For some, Union Station was a place to relax and relish life’s moments of celebration, both small and large. And for others, we fostered family traditions and helped make priceless memories.

In fact, last year Union Station welcomed home more than 2 million visitors . . . from the Greater Kansas City area, all 50 states, and from countries around the globe. No matter their origin, they were inspired by our history, educated with our fascinating experiences, and celebrated in one of the most iconic environments our community has to offer.

And you were there. If not in person, in spirit and support. Thank you . . . again and again.

• SPRING BREAK BLAST IN MARCH welcomed over 45,000 guests to Science City. Special programming captivated audiences with musical concerts, mindtwisting magic, and agility challenges on the Ninja Warrior Courses.

• WALT DISNEY RETURNED HOME IN MAY to Kansas City and to Union Station. The celebration of his passion and vision, as told through Disney100: The Exhibition – presented by Bank of America – hosted more than 135,000 people from around the world. And, importantly, it reminded us to keep dreaming and doing in order to remain vital, vibrant, and venerable.

• EYE SPY OPENED IN JULY as an upgrade to the original Science City “Mister E Hotel”. Filling 2,000 square feet, this $750,000 exhibit features over 45 illusions that take brain benders to another level.

• HIP HOP MD ENERGIZED UNION STATION IN OCTOBER. Kicking off our Saturday STEM Seminars for the 2024/2025 season, Hip Hop MD, Maynard Okereke, used hip hop as a medium to reach students in underserved and underrepresented communities and encourage them along STEM paths.

• HOLIDAY REFLECTIONS OPENED IN NOVEMBER and showcased a grand reimagination of our brilliant holiday experience. Presented by BOK Financial, Kansas City’s largest indoor holiday experience invited more than 208,000 guests to stroll along KC’s historic Petticoat Lane, meet Santa and his singing reindeer, and snap millions of priceless selfies. And across our vast campus, more than 360,000 guests celebrated the holiday season.

And that only scratches the surface. Throughout 2024, the themes of home were seen and felt . . .

In Science City – powered by Burns & McDonnell – nearly 343,000 guests of every age explored, experimented, and engaged in high-value fun and learning meant to feed curiosities and inspire futures.

In our world-class Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, we journeyed with more than 61,000 guests to the edge of our solar system, through portals that bend space, and into the confluence of music, lasers and special effects.

And in our Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre, more than 48,000 movie lovers delighted in stories of pure fantasy, real-life adventure, prehistoric drama, and awe-inspiring discoveries.

Sprinkled between our intentional public experiences and community events were countless personal moments. Many spontaneous. Some planned. Proposals. Weddings. Quinceañeras. And on and on . . .

Now, we invite you to read in more detail about the impacts you helped create and deliver to our diverse community. On the following pages, listen to the voices of extreme appreciation. Look for the smiles and special moments your support made possible. And as Walt Disney famously said, “We’re just getting started.”

Finally, as we move forward – sometimes in turbulence beyond our control, but always with confidence – we invite you to keep coming home to our community's original example of regionalism! The thrill of returning to Union Station never fades. You are a wildly important part of our history and our story.

With deep appreciation,

Our Vision

To be Kansas City’s iconic symbol of inclusion, inspiration, lifelong learning, and its center for civic celebration.

Our Mission

Union Station Kansas City is dedicated to preserving its historic monument and its stories, inspiring lifelong learning, and creating lasting memories for our community.

PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC MONUMENT & STORIES

Key Renovations

In preserving Union Station, we preserve our history, our landmark, and the indomitable spirit of Kansas City. In 2024, we completed key renovations across our expansive campus including resurfacing and maintenance updates to the South Plaza and Carriage Pavilion front parking lots. We modernized our freight house elevator, added new adjustable and removable seating in the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, and made major updates to our Bank of America gallery with the addition of a permanent truss and lighting grid to create a more immersive, guest experience.

Special thanks to the Edward F. Swinney Foundation for helping us maintain our historic building.

Empowering Creativity: Art Infused

In 2024, Union Station dedicated Lisa Lopez-Galvan’s portrait to the existing “Welcome All” mural. Family members were invited to attend a small, private gathering, in memory of Lisa. The mural – created by local, Chicano artist, Chico Sierra – in total portrays everyday people and community leaders who truly embody a “Welcome All” attitude and way of life. Guests can view this mural in the Ramón Murguía Visitor Entrance located on our ground floor rotunda entrance. This mural along with others are available for public viewing throughout the Union Station campus.

Union Station strives to be a place of community events and celebrations. In 2024, we hosted and participated in both new and returning arts-focused community events such as Make Music Day, a free, live performance by students from the Kansas City Jazz Academy of the American Jazz Museum, live concerts featuring local artists in the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, Hip Hop Science Day in Science City, KC Fringe Festival, and we rounded out the year with nearly 20 Holiday choirs who performed around our massive, decorated tree. Union Station is proud to preserve and create new memories for both past and future generations.

INSPIRING LIFELONG LEARNING

Disney100: The Exhibition & Speaker Series

Walt Disney came home to Kansas City as Union Station hosted Disney100: The Exhibition. This groundbreaking exhibition, celebrating 100 years of The Walt Disney Company, is one of the largest and most immersive projects the Walt Disney Archives has ever produced. As part of the exhibition's stop in Kansas City, Union Station hosted a Speaker Series, covering a wide range of Disney topics including: history, animation, design, illustration and more.

Thanks to our exhibit sponsors: Bank of America, Edward F. Swinney Foundation, Hallmark Cards Inc.,

JE Dunn Construction Group, Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, University of Missouri – Kansas City, The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center, City of Kansas City Missouri, Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, Sherman Family Foundation, Missouri Humanities, Missouri Humanities Trust Fund, National Endowment for Humanities.

25th Anniversary: Science City & Planetarium

Science City and the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium both celebrated 25 years of inspiring the STEM professionals of tomorrow. Science City’s celebration was part of CPKC’s annual Holiday Train event. Guests were able to make their own 25th anniversary commemorative stamp, create paintings using train tracks as inspiration, and learn more about the advances in technology in intermodal transportation.

The Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium celebrated its 25th anniversary with a weekend full of unique programming that featured live music from Calvin Arsenia, aerial arts from Voler Thieves of Flight, visual elements from Kansas City Art Institute Assistant Professor of Animation, Evan Tedlock, and Yoga Under the Stars presented by Kristin Rea Yoga.

Eye Spy in Science City

Eye Spy is the total reimagination of Science City's original “Mister E Hotel,” that opened in 1999. While Science City is no stranger to change, Eye Spy took the theme of optical illusions and brain benders to a whole new level. Filling 2,000 square feet, this $750,000 exhibit features over 45 illusions in 5 different themes.

This renovation was made possible through support from The Goppert Foundation and the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation.

Hip Hop Science – High Impact Programs

In October 2024, Union Station was proud to welcome Maynard Okereke, better known as Hip Hop MD, as we supersized our first Saturday STEM Seminar of the 2024/2025 calendar year. Okereke is a former Civil Engineer who now works as a Science Communicator, using hip hop as a medium to reach students in underserved and under-represented communities. During the three day event, Okereke and The DeBruce Foundation talked to students about careers and career paths in STEM.

Thank you to T-Mobile for sponsoring this event.

Minecraft Day - Tapping into Pop Culture

Science City celebrated 15 years of Minecraft building, crafting and exploration on Minecraft Day, hosted on July 24th. Since the game originally launched, over 300 million fans have explored biomes, built with bricks, hunted treasure, and made maps, including over 2,600 inside of Science City for this special one-day signature event.

“At MRIGlobal, we are proud to be part of this vibrant scientific landscape, and I am honored to continue supporting Dr. Kimball’s vision and for MRIGlobal to be serving as event sponsor for the Science and Engineering Fair for our 69th consecutive year.”

– Dr. Ian Colrain, President & CEO, MRIGlobal

Celebrating the Region's Best and Brightest: Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair

2024 marked the 73rd annual Greater Kansas City Science & Engineering Fair (GKCSEF), which was held in Union Station’s historic Grand Plaza. From more than 500 students who entered the fair, four young women were selected as the overall winners and represented Kansas City at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. The winners were also recognized at a Kansas City Current soccer match.

Special thanks to Charles N. Kimball and Joyce C. Hall for their contributions to the Fair dating back to 1957.

WHERE KANSAS CITY CELEBRATES

CPKC Historic Empress Visit - A New Beginning

Union Station has never forgotten its history as a train station, and was proud to welcome the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Empress 2816. The historic train traveled from Calgary to Mexico City to celebrate CPKC as the first fully trans-continental railroad in North America. Guests learned about the history of CPKC, rode a scale model “Puffer Belly” train, and were able to watch free showings of the film, Rocky Mountain Express.

Greater Kansas City Day

For both the Rotary Club of Kansas City and the Kansas City Monarchs, 2024 was a year of celebration. The Rotary Club celebrated 100 years of service, while the Monarchs commemorated the 100th anniversary of the original Kansas City Monarchs’ victory in the first Negro League World Series. For the last four years these organizations have teamed up for Greater Kansas City Day, to raise money to support the Rotary Youth Camp in Lee’s Summit. We were proud to host Greater Kansas City Day inside Union Station’s historic Grand Hall.

KC Sports

Union Station is "Where Kansas City Celebrates,”™ and that includes our local sports teams. The Chiefs won another Super Bowl (their third in five years), the Royals had an incredible playoff run, and the KC Current set history when they opened the first stadium in the world, purpose-built for a professional women’s sports team. Sports fans of all ages visited Union Station to take photos, buy gear, and show their support for our hometown teams.

UNION STATION GIVES BACK...

Science City EBT

Thanks to a generous donation from the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation, Science City was able to offer discounted tickets to Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card holders. With this grant, over 1,300 young explorers and their families were able to attend Science City for only $5 a ticket, helping to reduce barriers for entry.

Navy Week

U.S. Navy Week is an outreach program held in select cities across the United States, bringing Sailors and Navy representatives together with local communities. It is designed to provide a greater understanding of the Navy’s role in national security, promote public awareness and engage in community service. Kansas City was one of only 15 cities selected to host Navy Week celebrations in 2024, and Union Station hosted an event proclaiming November 11 – 17 as Navy Week. We also hosted a reenlistment ceremony during the week.

Small Celebrations

Union Station is known for large-scale community celebrations, but almost every day there are a also number of small, personal celebrations that happen inside our walls. During the run of Disney100: The Exhibition, we fulfilled two wishes through Make-A-Wish Foundation and one reveal through the Dream Factory. There are also countless engagements, weddings, Quinceañera photoshoots, and parties that happen here annually.

Spring Break Blast

Science City hosted our first ever “Spring Break Blast” in 2024. Over 45,000 guests attended and enjoyed musical concerts from Mr. Stinky Feet, the mystical powers of Magic Scott, the speed and endurance on the Ninja Warrior inflatables and critters of all kinds during Barnyard Breakout.

CPKC Holiday Train

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) annual holiday train rolled through Kansas City this year, giving thousands of guests a chance to celebrate the season, as well as a chance to donate to Harvesters Community Food Network. Union Station built an entire pop-up holiday celebration with a full day of musical guests, vendors, and entertainment for the whole family. With local artists, as well as a Grammy-nominated superstars, there was something for everyone!

Home for the Holidays...

Holiday Reflections

We’ve always been a place where families celebrate the holiday season, and 2024 was no different. For the fifth consecutive year, the wildly popular indoor holiday walk-thru village, – Holiday Reflections – took place in Union Station’s Grand Plaza. Featuring new elements such as a recreation of Kansas City’s 1920’s Petticoat Lane, recreations of Kansas City’s historic “crowns”, and over seven new photo ops, 2024 also returned fan favorites such as singing reindeer, the historic Jones Store ride-on train, and over 10,000 square feet of holiday themed model trains. More than 180,000 guests visited Holiday Reflections. 2024 was also the second year for Union Station's holiday-themed pop up bar, Tinsel & ‘Tinis, inside of Holiday Reflections. Nearly 2,000 guests drank signature cocktails, listened to live music, and celebrated the greatest time of year with friends and family.

On June 4th, the RaisingKC Quilt was revealed during a special quilt-raising ceremony in Union Station’s Grand Hall. Pictured at the event are Johnson County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mike Kelly, Union Station President and CEO George Guastello, and Union Station Board Member Robert Regnier, along with RaisingKC representatives Sondra Wallace, Barbara Unell, and Bob Unell.

The RaisingKC quilt was created by designers Morgan Georgie and Carrie Kiefer and quilter Tia Curtis.

The Road Home

In an effort to change how our community sees and responds to homelessness, reStart, Inc. partnered with Union Station to host a free, temporary, interactive exhibit called "The Road Home". Debuted earlier at the Kansas City Museum, stories of 18 local neighbors who have navigated the road from homelessness to housing are included in the exhibit.

Volunteers From The Region Invest Time and Talent

Union Station enjoys the generosity of our dedicated volunteers. They bring laughter, joy, and life to our historic halls. Their personality shines light on our worldclass touring exhibitions, Science City, Holiday Reflections, our Model Train Exhibit and other events. Our volunteers represent who we are in the best way possible and ensure that Union Station will remain a vital place of innovation, celebration, and education.

USKC was fortunate to attract 280 volunteers who served throughout the year. Nearly 1/3 of whom served 50 or more hours each

In 2024, our volunteers gave a collective 23,430 service hours = a value of $765,092
