Pictured are BHS students James Humphries, Alexea Mullins and Desiree Reyes. BHS students who are studying Japanese through Georgia Virtual School participated in a relief effort to support the victims of the tsunami/earthquake. Following the Japanese tradition, students folded paper cranes and collected pledges to send to victims. BHS students folded 103 origami cranes to be added to those from other students in GAVS throughout the state. Sadako was 2 years old when an atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima in 1945. When she was 12, she was diagnosed with leukemia and given less than a year to live. A friend showed her how to fold paper cranes and told her that if a person folded 1,000 paper cranes, they might get a wish granted. Sadako believed the story and wished to get well. She began working hard to fold one thousand cranes. At the time of her death in October 1955, she had completed only 644 cranes. Her friends were so moved that they folded the remaining 356 cranes to complete her goal so they could be used in her funeral. These children kept working for more than two years and raised about $400,000 to erect a monument to honor and remember Sadako and the cranes to promote peace in the world. In honor of this effort and her story, approximately nine metric tons of paper cranes are sent to Hiroshima each year. Today, Japanese people, especially young people, still take time to fold a thousand paper cranes when someone is recovering from illness, needing encouragement or trying hard to reach a very difficult goal. They are a symbol of peace, love and encouragement.
Eagle Ridge kindergarteners have pre-K visitors Mrs. Crane and Mrs. Eubanks’ kindergarten class at ERE celebrated the 100th day of school by collecting 100 items as a project. Pictured is the class showing off their 100th day masks and projects! Contributed photo
