Union Elections 2012

Union Elections 2012 Shape your Union! The Union Elections give you a unique opportunity to shape your Union. This manifesto booklet gives you the chance to see the policies of the candidates standing for election. Union Officers represent you in the Union, to the University and at times on a local and national level. They organise and run campaigns, co-ordinate academic representation, defend your rights as students, work for Clubs and Societies and oversee the runnning of the Union’s commercial and membership based services. The Student Officers are a group of students elected by the student population in a campus-wide vote each year. There are 17 Student Officers: 4 Full Time positions, and 13 Part-Time positions that students hold alongside completing their degree. Together they make up the Student Officer Commitee. In these elections we are also electing four NUS Delegate positions. These delegates will represent the UEA student body at the NUS (National Union of Students) National Conference in April. In the following pages you’ll see candidate manifesto’s for all these positions. There will be a page with the list of candidates, and a job description for the position. Elections are a really exciting time for the Union. Hopefully in the next week you’ll get the chance to speak to a lot of the candidates, and ask them about their policies, make sure you quiz them on the issues that matter to you, as the winning candidates will be representing you next year! You can also come to the Hustings (a candidate question time) for the Full Time Officer candidates on Thursday the 8th March in the LCR. It’s from 5-7pm, and sponsored by Dominoes who will be handing out free Pizza! If you have any questions or comments about elections, you see anything you think might be unfair, or a candidate who you think may be breaking the rules - please feel free to email the Deputy Returning Officer at union.community@uea.ac.uk.

Make sure you check out ueastudentelections.com for more information!

The email will also provide you with the instructions on how to vote. If you don’t get an email with your voting token by Thursday - make sure you let us know by emailing union.community@uea.ac.uk. Voting is online and open for 24 hours a day, so you can vote whenenver you want between the open at 9am on the 8th March and the close at 5pm on Monday 12th March.

Your Vote: The Union uses a sytem called Single Transferable Vote or STV. This means that each voter can rank their candidates in order of preference, so 1 for thier first choice, 2 for their second and so on. If no one candidate gets over 50% of the vote on first preferences alone, then the candidate with the lowest number of first preferences is eliminated and their votes will transfer to their second preferences. Remember - Giving a candidate your second preference will not count against your first preference candidate - it only counts if your first preference candidate is no longer in the race.

GOODBUN

IS THE ONE For ACADEMIC Officer I have been involved in student representation at UEA for four years at UG and PG level – as a School Rep, on Union Council, as WAM SSLC Chairperson for two years and currently as Faculty Convenor for Arts and Humanities

1. Stop excessive word-count penalties The University feels that there is a lack of consistency in the current word-count policy. As a result of this a range of highly controversial regulations and excessive penalties are due to be enforced. The penalties include marks being capped at 40% for a number of minor offences. This will affect you all and I want you to let me put a stop to this.

3. Exam Marks Matter You want your exam scripts Like it or not, exams have a huge bearing on how well you do in your degrees. It is currently felt that you do not get enough exam feedback and that you would benefit from receiving not only better feedback but also your marked exam scripts back.

2. Your 24/7 Library You love it! Let’s keep it! The current 24/7 Library is a trial that will run until the end of this July. Let’s make it stay. Many of you have benefitted from these extended opening hours and will continue to do so during the assessment period. It has been a fantastic initiative and I want to do everything I can on behalf of all of you to ensure that it remains a permanent fixture from now on. Let me make sure that your 24/7 Library stays.

4. S.O.S Safe-guard our Schools The fate of the School of Music was decided before students really had a chance to make a difference. There must be more rigorous consultation with the student body before such major decisions are made.

You need to know how to improve your exam marks to maximise your degree result.

A dangerous precedent has been set by this episode and I want a safe-guard put in place to ensure there is far more student input.

I want to get your exam scripts back to you, so you can achieve the highest grades.

We need to protect our Schools. Let me make sure that we can.

GOODBUN IS THE ONE TO GET THESE THINGS DONE

Hello! Iʼm Hannah. Iʼm a third year English Literature and Creative Writing student and Iʼve been a society committee member and Union councillor for the past year. I think students are getting a raw deal and something needs to change.

Here are some reasons you should vote for me!

Hubs that work for you. Your faculty hub is the lynchpin of your degree— you shouldnʼt suffer because of its errors. I will work to ensure that the hubs make your life easier.

A university you can make the most of.

Iʼll fight school closures. The Music School closure was unfair and underhanded. Iʼll lobby the university to be open in future reviews and listen to students on matters that affect our education to ensure this never happens again.

Not everyone is aware of brilliant facilities like bookable spaces and web printing. Iʼll advertise them more heavily so all students can use them.

And… I want to talk to you more!

Iʼll fight hidden course costs and make sure you know in advance what youʼre expected to spend. Iʼll work to cut costs by setting up a space where you can advertise books you need to buy and want to sell.

Iʼll make it easier for you to reach me if you need Union support in your academic life, and always let you know how Iʼm using your feedback.

My name is Zoe Phillips; I am a second year student studying Politics with International Relations. I am an average student but I have above average ambitions for this university. Having chaired the PSI SSLC (Student Staff Liaison Committee) and as the President of the PSI Society, a member of Union Council and the PSI school board, I have worked closely with schools and seen the potential for change! I know that a difference can be made, that changes can be achieved, and I am going to lobby to make sure that it happens.

WE SHOULD BE HEARD

VALUE FOR MONEY

The big decisions about courses and learning are being made without a lot of student input. I want to open the decision making process and be able to hold the right people to account. Students should take back the university and have their voices, not only heard, but LISTENED to!

The government has put a price on education, whether you are paying £9,000 or £3,000 – education is priceless! I will lobby for more contact hours, smaller seminars, complementary books or reading packs with every module and NO more hidden course costs.

POSITIVE OUTCOMES ONLY Your degree should be what you want it to be – there should be no room for being told NO. I want schools to exhaust all options to solve the problems that you want solving. There is always an alternative or another way to help and I will lobby to ensure that schools, HUBS and the university provide positive solutions. Zoe #1 for academic Z.Phillips@uea.ac.uk

CHANGE FOR FEEDBACK Feedback is incredibly important in ensuring that you get the most out of your degree. I want to lobby for huge changes, both in exam and essay feedback. With every piece of coursework that is returned, a 10 minute time slot should be allocated to each student. If this is not required than the student can opt out; however it will provide the opportunity to fully understand and improve upon coursework.

“We have two ears and one mouth for a reason so that we can listen twice as much as we speak” Why I’d love to be your communications officer: - I am dedicated to being someone to help make a change - I want to work with people passionate about their beliefs - I am very open minded, and will help to campaign about anything you feel deserves attention - I will always be there to listen to the issues that are facing you so that we can do something about them. With the rise in tuition fees, it is more important than ever that you get the most out of your union.

Better communication of union council decisions

It seems to me that not enough people are aware of the decisions that are made at union council – that’s why I would dedicate an entire page in concrete to bitesize information about union council decisions and vote results, so that YOU know exactly what is going on in YOUR university, without having to trawl through endless text.

Be heard

I want to make it even easier for you to have your views heard, with ideas such as a dedicated, two hour weekly feedback session with me personally, a “text in” page in concrete, and feedback boxes in each hub, as well as in the nursery and Edith Cavell Building. I will be committed to getting out and about to all parts of the campus to talk to you. Alternatively, get in touch and tell me what would be best for you! This is your union, and you should have a say in what it does.

Better communication of upcoming demonstrations and campaigns

I will personally get out there and let you know about up and coming demonstrations and events, so that you can get involved with the decisions that you feel most strongly about.

Hard-to-reach students

I will be dedicated to improving the union for those of you who find it hard to get involved, whether you are a local student, medical student, parent student, part-time student or just generally have a busy schedule – let the media come to you! I also want to improve online newsletters, which will be available as a translated text for international students.

Megan Proctor for Communications Officer

About Me I have been involved in many clubs and societies throughout my degree. I have been the Secretary of both the Fencing and Archery club, Union Representative, SSLC Representative, am the Chair of Union Council, and I have enjoyed these roles greatly.

University is about becoming who you want to be. The Union should work with students to ensure that students have the best possible experience for a dream career that you deserve!

It’s about getting students doing what they came here to do; have fun, get a good degree in a field they enjoy, and the skills necessary for getting their dream career for life!

As a result of these experiences I can appreciate, and have an immense deal of respect for every student’s opinion, and believe in LISTENING and ACTING upon them.

I realise how important it is for students to be involved within the Union through Clubs, Societies, working and Volunteering, in order to improve their employability prospects in conjunction to making their student experience the one they came here for, and get on the ladder for their dream career whist having fun.

My Aims -I want to improve the communications between students and the Union so that we can DO something to help YOU! - I want to get back to personal, in depth, face to face interaction, to achieve a solid relationship between you students and the Union. Everyone’s opinions matter. - I want to involve students in the Union more, especially those who may feel excluded such as International, Mature and Local Students. - I want to help students realize their full potential and boost their employability through involvement with the union.

Jess for Community and Student Rights Officer - Getting Your Voice Heard I’m Jess and I’m a third year politics student running for community and student rights officer. As a student and a local I believe I have the right mix of experience to really create a cohesive relationship with the wider community and to represent students on campus. Below are my key qualifications and skills: Parish Councillor (Barnham Broom) for 3 years School Governor for 1 year Politics Degree 5+ years of charity work Being a parish councillor for so long means I have already done a very similar job concerning community and student rights for my parishioners. My year as a school governor means I already have experience negotiating student rights and needs in a similar environment to the UEA union. My Aims Lobbying – Setting up meetings with First Bus service as they have continually put prices up without giving us a better service and getting rid of 21/22 Bowthorpe-Hospital-University route altogether! Face-time – Students don’t get enough time to have proper face to face contact with their officers so I would set up a table in the Hive twice a week, for 2 hours each session for people to come up and have a chat or make an appointment with me for later Protests – With the closure of the School of Music protests have become more and more important and I would want to become fully involved and improve this by keeping them free and improving the coordination of these by working with the university and students Transparency – Academic decisions on your future are often taken behind closed doors, such as decisions about retaking exams. I think this practice needs to be updated and brought out into the open where you can properly argue your case Home Run – Home run is great but still needs improvement including a landlord evaluation site that I would set up with a forum for students to help each other on how to deal with living with friends. Also, a section where students can evaluate the service they receive from landlord so students don’t end up with a beautiful house, but with a terrible landlord

#1 for Community and Student Rights I'm a final year Law student, and I have loved every minute of my time here at UEA. So many great opportunities have come my way, from the chance to study abroad in Rome and learn Italian to getting involved with societies. Running for a position as a Student Officer is the greatest opportunity yet as it will give me a chance to contribute towards making sure that others have an even better time here than I have! During my time at UEA I have fenced for the women's team, been a Union Councillor and held a position on the Law Society committee. I am currently the Secretary for the Red Cross Society. I have worked throughout my degree, in the past as a waitress at everybody's favourite Waffle House and now for a charity as a carer for adults with learning difficulties. In the future I see myself doing a Masters in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and I'd love to end up working actively for a charity such as the Red Cross or Amnesty International.

Who?

Why the puzzle pieces? The theme behind my campaign is that we need to pick up the pieces and put them back together if we’re going to move forward. The Union can’t function fully with a growing deficit. Students can’t adjust properly if their money situation is hampering their wellbeing. Students make the University what it is. The Union needs active involvement from and representation for all of its students, not just the outspoken, politically active few who have the time to get their views across. Every student is a piece of this Union and it only if someone comes forward to represent all of them that we can achieve. Let me be that person. Vote for Jessica Cresswell.

Why?

I will work to ensure that the fixing of the Union deficit does not disproportionately disadvantage students. The Union needs to come up with new and inventive ways of saving money, and of earning more money, not merely increase its prices and cut its services.

Home Run is advertised as displaying only UEA recommended landlords and yet, year after year, students have problems with their housing situations. I would like to introduce a rating system whereby old tenants can recommend their landlords, explain what they have been good at and where they need to improve. I would like to see a more active dialogue between the Union and the landlords to ensure they are actively trying to improve their service. I would fully support the current idea to create a Union letting agency of its own. This would be a great way of raising more money for the Union, whilst providing the students with a vital, high quality service that they need. Now that course fees are going up for undergraduates, some courses are no longer subsidised by the government. This makes the fees paid by International Students, in some cases, unjustifiable. I would like to challenge the University on this issue and lobby for fairer prices. I would like to challenge the way that extenuating circumstances are dealt with by the University. I feel that the need to fill in reams of paperwork about your problem and gather evidence from doctors, counsellors, parents and so on before a decision can be made about delayed first sits (for example) causes unnecessary turmoil for already struggling students.

If elected, I would be a more accountable Officer. I would write a regular blog of how I am spending my time. Go into the Hive and have a look at the poster displaying who your officers are. It talks about holding elections last semester. Out of date information leads to a lack of accountability and total disregard for the democratic structure of the Union. I would bring an attention to detail to the Union to avoid things like this. I believe that the current officers have failed to connect with the students on a general level and I would work hard to be a recognised face around the campus, talking to the students to make sure that I am correctly representing their views. I would like to run a campaign on hidden disabilities and ensure that the University is doing all it can to support students in this area. I would like to investigate the feasibility of giving all new entry students the chance to be tested for dyslexia as this is still commonly not diagnosed in schools.

You can’t fit a year’s worth of work on a side of A4! To find out more about what I’m standing for, or to ask specific questions regarding sexual or mental health, public transport etc, email j.cresswell@uea.ac.uk or find my campaign on facebook!

DO THE RIGHT THING... VOTE KEGGIN keggin Community and student rights

Implementation of a system that allows us to voice positive and negative reviews of student housing, highlighting any issues before moving in. By working together we can put pressure on landlords to show us more respect as tenants. Say no to mould, say no to clanking radiators, say YES to better housing!!

Fairer bus pass system that means you can replace your card cheaply if you lose it. Having to shell out £20 on insurance just in case you ever do lose it is an unreasonable added cost!!

Bottled water at UEA is a rip-off at around £1. Vote for more water fountains across campus and lower prices of bottled water wherever possible. In the library it's the only thing we can drink, yet there is one single fountain for the whole building.

Say no to hidden course costs. I will work to ensure that no student is faced with hidden course costs that kick you when you're £9000 down... We need better publicised campus wide Used Book Fairs at key points throughout the year, so we can save £ whenever possible!

l.keggin@uea.ac.uk

In the current job climate, work experience is fast becoming more important than ever. We need more opportunities to get involved in community projects in a way that fits around our studies. This can only be achieved with a direct approach, bridging the gap between local businesses, organisations and students.

Sam Clark

for Community and Student Rights Officer Hi, my nameÕs Sam Clark. IÕm an American and English Literature student in my fourth year of study and I want to become the Community and Student Rights Officer for the Union of UEA Students. IÕm an approachable, energetic, and understanding candidate and I want to make our Union better for everyone.

1.

5 Things I Will Work Towards

Your Union working for you: Your Union works to provide you with what you need at University. If you, or your club/society want to do something, run an event, volunteer in the community, the Union can help. A clearer and more simple process by which you can get the UnionÕs help needs to be implemented. More awareness and prevention of sexual assault: Information about what to do in the case of sexual assault should be included on the Union website, the Medical Centre website, and in Welcome Week packs. Educational material outlining exactly what constitutes sexual assault should also be included. Greater consideration for international students: I have been an international student and I know how difficult it can be to integrate, even without the added difficulty of a language barrier. More activities should be focused on helping the integration process for our many international students. Green waste bins on campus: UEA has a commitment to being environmentally friendly and yet it is currently lacking ‘green waste’bins on campus. With the introduction of these bins the waste could be composted rather than being taken to landfills. Direct and open communication between the Union and you: I will establish a direct line of communication with students by using social media and drop in sessions. I will set aside time each week that is specifically for hearing your queries and suggestions. To do the job properly, I must be able to listen to what it is you want.

2. 3. 4. 5.

If you have any ideas, questions, or suggestions, please get in touch!

KELLY BOLT

FOR FINANC£ OFFIC£R The next academic year is going to be important for UEA! It will be the first generation of students paying the uncapped tuition fees, but on a more positive note it will also be UEA‟s 50th Birthday! I believe that these two factors should really drive the union to provide an excellent year of service for students.

About me: o o o o o

I am currently a third year Business Management student President of the UEA Badminton Club 2011/2012 Social Secretary of the UEA Badminton Club 2010/2011 Ziggurat Sports Representative 2010/ 2012 Student Ambassador 2010/2012

Your priorities are my priorities and I want to bring: o o o

QUALITY EQUALITY AND FUN

TO YOUR STUDENT EXPERIENCE!

I aim to focus on: Commercial Services Quality and value: I promise that I will drive value for students through the retail outlets provided on campus. I want to ensure students can get the best value for their money. The UFO already provides promotional offers such as meal deals and regularly discount offers. I think this is great for students on campus but this can be developed further to reward the loyalties of those who regularly use the facilities on campus.

Sports and Societies

As an opportunity for all: I believe implementing a formal „taster‟ system within clubs and societies could be key for creating and retaining membership. The scheme will be helpful for those interested in new activities but who are wary about making the financial commitment without any previous experience. This scheme would be particularly beneficial to some of the smaller, more expensive or more unique clubs and societies.

As an opportunity for those returning: Aim to create a formal structure through which alumni graduates can return and take part in activities, clubs or societies in which they used to participate in at university as well as providing updates. This service could be charged and so would increase revenue to clubs and societies.

High quality services: Student satisfaction within clubs and societies is of course a high priority. Sports clubs with focus sport status provide a higher quality service to their members as well as receive additional funding. The focus sport scheme is already in place but I would take a proactive approach to drive and develop the scheme further by working closely with the committees of clubs.

like they are getting value for money! By introducing the pound zone in the paper shop and setting up a union-wide loyalty card scheme in the bars, shops and box office. I want students to be able to save money without reducing the quality of products available on campus.

Value for money, I want to make sure that all students feel

students. I believe these standards should be maintained and that money should be allocated fairly to sports and societies allowing them to grow and develop. Each week clubs and societies make great achievements and these need to be published and promoted so we can enjoy UEA success together!

it helps save money. One specific aim of mine would be to increase the number of water fountains on campus, which will save students money and reduce the use of plastic bottles. I would be thrilled to represent you all and I most definitely have the motivation to promote change for the better!

My name is Vicky Rimmer and I am running to be your Finance Officer for next year. I have been a student here at UEA for the last four years, currently studying for my masters in International Relations and I am excited about being a part of shaping the union for the future. During my time at UEA I have been the President and Treasurer of a society, a Union Council rep, sat on societies council and sat on several University committees as well.

 I plan to organise workshops so the skills you learn through being a part of a club or society is transferable for when you get a job in the future

 Despite the deficit I want to make sure that club and society funding isn’t cut anymore and that the money we have is spent fairly!

 Working with both you and the ents team I want to increase attendance and find ways that we can make campus locations the place to go on nights out!

 The most important part of the union is YOU and I want to make sure that the formulation of the new strategic plan has you the students at the heart of it

 I think there needs to be more awareness of club and society activities on campus with a specific advertising spot, as well as fighting for improvement of the website so that prospective students are aware of us before they even get here

 I want to provide a voice for you as students and ensure that all your opinions are considered in all decisions that are made.  I hope to work with the other officers to make sure that students get the most that they can from the Union

Lizzy Maskey for Finance Officer About me

I am a third year student, studying Environmental Geography with International Development. During my degree I have covered economics and did my dissertation in this area. I work on Union Reception in the Hive, so know numerous members of staff. Why Finance? I am passionate about our Union and what it can provide especially Sports, Societies and Campaigns. I will ensure that our limited resources are used on issues that affect you. THREE THINGS I WILL CHANGE THIS YEAR Increased accountability for Union Officers:

Public Calendars; so you can see what Officers do. Regular drop-in sessions & published office hours. Greater feedback on comments to the Union:

Not getting feedback on your ideas is demoralising. I will ensure that you receive feedback on all actions taken. Nationally recognised volunteering:

Our volunteering scheme recognises all the hard work you put in; so lets get national recognition! FIND OUT MORE

My name is Lewis James Wilkins and I’m running for the position of Finance Officer. I’m currently studying a MA in Modern British History after graduating in 2011 with a BA in History. Throughout my four years at UEA I have been actively involved in sports and societies; particularly hockey. I’m currently the President of the Hockey Club and have held the position of Secretary and Kit Secretary. I have a list of realistic and achievable aims for the role of Finance Officer, to make UEA even better than it is already!

A review of the UEA Ents department. o Tuesday LCRs are not what they used to be and Sports Night is not living up to its potential. A reorganisation of mid-week entertainment is necessary to raise attendance at the bar and LCRs. This will, of course, be done with student feedback to gauge how we could improve this. o Increased revenue at the bar and LCR is a key way to tackle the Union deficit.

The Sports Strategy. o A small and dedicated group of UEA students are hoping to implement a Sports Strategy for UEA. This would create a better community on campus and seek to raise representation and participation amongst sports and societies. As Finance Officer, I will look to work in tandem with this group to make sure students’ voices are heard. o Increased participation in sports and societies is a vital way to deal with the Union deficit as they create revenue for the Union.

Greater Union accountability. o Students need to know what the Union’s money is being spent on and should also have a greater say. Creating polls to help decide where Union funds should be allocated would be one way to make the Union more accountable to its students. Wednesday lectures and BUCS. o At the moment, our sports teams are being hindered by classes taking place on Wednesdays. I would look to seek a statement from the university regarding their stance on this issue and question why they don’t place more emphasis on BUCS (British University and Colleges Sport). Executive Committees. o I would look to create executive committees and representatives for the societies and sports at UEA to help each club run smoothly. These committees could meet once a month and discuss any issues that have been raised.

Aims:        

Increased representation Increased participation A review of UEA Ents Executive committees and representatives Supporting the Sports Strategy Transparency within the Union Union to be more accountable to students Statement regarding Wednesdays and BUCS

Sam Gladstone “Finance Sam!” 2012/13

• Protect clubs and societies funding

Clubs and societies are fundamental within the union and any cuts to their funding should be minimal.

• Make the most of what we have

We have some fantastic facilities, lets make the most of what’s available and expand the unions current ventures rather than expensively sourcing from elsewhere.

• Extinguish inefficiencies

The Union needs to be made more efficient in the way it runs to reduce the deficit.

• Meet clubs and societies individual needs Each club and society is different and has its own particular needs. I will support them in achieving their unique goals.

• Make Socweb useful

Socweb is useful for taking payments but could be so much more. It should be a means to interact and coordinate with members. I will add more functionality and promote its use.

About me: • Sub Aqua Committee • Maths School Board • Approachable • Dedicated to what I do

I believe the Union should be: • Accessible for all • Transparent • More interactive with its members • Working for you

Guy Owen for Finance Officer (GO-FO) Hi, I am a Postgraduate Economics student here at UEA. I am running for Finance Officer to maintain and improve the student experience (especially as new students are being saddled with £9k per year fees), across a range of sporting clubs and societies. These improved my UEA experience incredibly and I want to ensure students, both new and existing, get the same enjoyment I did. About me Played for UEA cricket team and was an active member in both Tennis and Fencing (which I had never done before, but wanted to give it a go). I have a BSc Economics and have worked for a County Council managing large budgets and delivering projects to a wide range of communities. As a Union Council representative, I always stood up for best interests of those I was representing, and would continue to do that for all students if elected. I believe More freedom should be given to sports clubs to manage their own finances. As they work with each other on a daily basis and know more about their sport, they know what needs to be done to improve the student experience.

A vote for Guy Owen would:  Make it easier to have a say on how your Union, sports club and/or society is run, from the top to the bottom.  Progress the Sports Strategy, working with the University, Union and students, aiming to build sports membership, enjoyment and funding.  Ensure no cuts are placed upon sports clubs and societies without student involvement. Bring in more efficient management and get rid of waste first. It’s not students fault the Union currently spends £400k more than it brings in!  Modernise LCR events, listening to student’s ideas and working with clubs in town, not against them.

Student’s views and opinions must be listened to, as opposed to making destructive decisions without them (we all know which School I’m talking about).

VOTE GUY OWEN FOR FINANCE OFFICER A safe pair of hands

Not just 9-5, working to fit around you

Students in hard to reach groups feel put off from the union as people aren’t around to talk when they are, therefore I believe the union should continue to work around them. Why you should vote for me:

-Experience  Sport clubs committee-Fell Secretary-coordinated successful focus sport application  Member of society committee  BUCS riding team  Union council MED representative -Enthusiasm -Drive

No political agenda, just an agenda for students

About Me: My name is Bintu Foday and I am a second year Accounting with Management Student. I won the Union Awards in 2011 for Student Rep of the year in the Social Science Faculty for representing Norwich Business School (NBS) students. I am heavily involved with student representation and also actively involved with fighting for student right in NBS; I voluntarily talk to potential students and their parents about the business school and my experience at the university. Why I am running to be your Non- Portfolio Officer? Vote for Bintu Foday because:  I will continue to raise your views in SSLC meetings.  Work closely with other officers to provide a diverse university for you.  Work for more water fountains to be placed in the library and other main teaching areas.  My passion for student representation means that I will work closely with the elected Academic Officer on academic issues.  Work to create a good relationship between students in UEA London and UEA Norwich.  Continue to fight for student representation in the university. IMOGEN FOR

WOMEN’S OFFICER Who am I? Hi. I’m a second year politics student, from London, and if you give me the chance I will always talk about the Woodcraft Folk (will explain more in the following section).

Why I want to stand As a long-term member of a young people’s charity (the Woodcraft Folk) I’ve been involved in educating our children about feminism and gender as part of our socialist principles. But importantly, this has taught me that feminism is still relevant and still needed. This is why I want to stand as women’s officer. We need to understand that sexism still exists and readdress modern sexism and patriarchy within our university and union.

What I will do as women’s officer. 

  

If you have any queries or thoughts then please email me: imogenprobyngibbs@live.co.uk

I will continue the ZERO TOLERANCE for sexual harassment, the current women’s officer has introduced. I will generally be a person to approach with any queries or problems I will campaign to re-instate the women’s safe room. I will continue UEA’s reclaim the night campaign, (protests which challenge the fear women have when walking about at night) I want to begin a campus wide discussion to readdress the gender balance in our union and university. - This will include setting guidelines for seminar leaders to manage good discussions, where every voice is heard. - Also I want to organise women’s cycling workshops, since statistics show that women are more likely to be knocked down in car accidents. - But this is also an area where I want to hear what students want. So elect me and watch this space.

HEY LOOK. YOU. THIS ISN'T ANY MANIFESTO. IT'S A

WO-MANIFESTO. (Get it?)

1) increased availability and awareness of free contraception on campus for both men and women. 2) increased STI and sexual health awareness and services on campus. 3) increased awareness of sexual abuse and harassment at University. It happens. We can prevent it. 4) increased awareness of the “Yes Means Yes” campaign. Enthusiastic consent reduces rape! Equality is so in right now.

Vote TESSA GILDER-SMITH in as WOMAN'S OFFICER. I'm Tessa, and i'm in for equality, change, and a better University experience for all!

ASTRID FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT OFFICER in the 2012 Union elections

Most importantly, as International Officer I'd make

the diversity on campus more visible. International students do have some practical issues that are

specific to this group, but they are also a group of

people with lots of resources, power and interesting stories. This needs to be shown off more on

campus, so that everybody leaves UEA saying that having such a large, diverse international

community on campus was a big part of making At UEA, Erasmus students have had

difficulties finding housing. This could

be improved by working with HomeRun by to establishing a special Erasmus

housing list as well as a contact forum

(that’s me)

for UEA students who'd like to sublet their room while going away on

exchange. This is an example of the small changes the Union can make

which will make life a lot easier for

international students coming to UEA.

By keeping up a good contact with the international community, many

problems like this could be solved.

VOTE YOUSEF FOR ETHNIC MINORITIES Hello I am Yousef Balboul aka The Tartan Pharaoh I am a second year undergraduate studying Politics who is Half Scottish Half Egyptian .I am running for this role because I believe there is a lack of representation for those people with different ethnic backgrounds in the University and Norwich itself. I want to do whatever it takes in order to broaden that voice and make sure that people who come to the university have a voice and feel proud that they are from an ethnic background but not feel that they are in the minority. Follow me on Facebook on my profile Yousef Balboul or join my campaign group Youse For Ethnic Minorities Officer

YOUSEF’S PYRIMID OF PROMISES WELCOME WEEK - Help create events at fresher's week that help people from different backgrounds break the ice and meet each other

MAKE SURE NO-ONE IS LEFT BEHIND – Make sure that everyone in the university can integrate and have what should be the best time of there lives at UEA

ENCOURAGE APPLICATIONS – Make the university reach out to different ethnic to come to the university. It’s even more important to encourage this when fees are up to £9,000 so they are not dissuaded to come to university

CREATE MORE EVENTS – Raise more awareness to events such as the international ball and Go Global Week. We need more events that are more integrated into campus life in order to reach not just people from ethnic backgrounds but everyone on campus so I suggest a market where people from different backgrounds can make food from their cultures and put them in market stalls in the square

NUS tends to be ineffective in major campaigns look at tutition fees, EMA‌ Their big influence is in

Purchasing . Our union gets most of its goods from NUS purchasing body.

NUS is the National Union of student for the UK and acts as an umbrella body for all UK Student Unions including UEA.

Maths Bit NUS purchasing=Ethically bad * purchases lots

UEA delegates should use limited conference floor time to ensure efficient and ethical purchasing.

UEA Students Union Purchasing= ethically good* purchases little Hello I am the only candidate to include a maths bit in their manifesto, the only candidate to make their photo in front of a road sign and the non officer candidate running exclusively for NUS delegate.

The NUS delegates get to vote for the new NUS leadership. If elected based on the manifestos I would vote for Kanja Sesay for President and Dannie Grufferty for Society & citizenship VP
