t Union, we believe every student has potential—to be successful in college, to have a fulfilling career and, more importantly, to be the person God made them to be.

We call this potential God’s calling—the sweet spot that develops when a student applies his or her gifts, talents and strengths not only to a career, but also to a love of service to God and mankind.

At Union College, educating nurses, physician assistants and other future medical professionals means far more than simply teaching them to practice medicine. Our professors model the passion for people exemplified by the Great Physician, and encourage each student to share the power of prayer with their patients. We seek to instill a sense of mission in the classroom, in hospitals and through service in Lincoln and around the world.

lenty of personal attention and hands-on experience means Union nurses are prepared for any challenge they meet on the hospital floor.

When someone holds your life in their hands, you pray they have the skill to figure out what’s wrong, the experience to pick the right treatment and the compassion to make sure you are comfortable every step of the way.

Each nurse gains the practical experience to thrive on the hospital floor right after graduation through rigorous coursework, extensive hands-on training in Union’s high-tech simulation center and a wide variety of clinical rotations, internships and preceptorships.

But nursing is about more than treating symptoms. Our program provides many opportunities to serve the people who need it most—here in Lincoln or around the globe. Our Christ-focused approach helps each student develop the spiritual foundation to truly care about patients and depend on a Higher Power when faced with real medical decisions—often in life or death situations. provides a customized degree specifically for careers in human health—as a physician, dentist, physical therapist, pharmacist or physician assistant.

The program combines classes focused on human biology and related fields, while leaving a block in the schedule that allows the student to pursue classes in a supporting area of interest such as psychology, communication, business or music. That means students get a well-rounded education, making them more desirable for medical schools and better prepared to take on the challenges of health care. Our students learn to treat not only physical symptoms, but the whole person. That’s why they run a monthly foot clinic at a local soup kitchen, volunteer at a local free clinic for the homeless and go on a mission trip to provide medical care along the Amazon in Peru.

“I really enjoyed my clinical rotation at the People’s City Mission Free Clinic in Lincoln. I want to be a family practice PA because I like working with patients on a long-term basis and teaching them how to live healthy lives. At the free clinic, we practiced diagnosing illnesses without more expensive testing—like MRIs—and we often saw patients multiple times to follow up on their treatment plan.

One day, I worked in a pharmacy dispensing medication and explaining in Spanish how to take the medication. Another day, I was the ‘doctor,’ assessing and prescribing medication to the patients (with an actual doctor close by to assist when needed). I loved this part because I interacted with the people and tried to put together the ‘puzzle’ of what was ailing them.”

As a required part of their training, senior international rescue and relief majors spend the spring semester in Nicaragua, studying global health, jungle survival and conducting medical clinics in remote areas of the country. During spring break, they are joined by the Global Health Nursing class. The nursing students also conduct remote clinics serving hundreds of people, many of whom receive medical care only once a year.

PAs in Peru Each summer, a group of PA students (who have just completed their first year) accompany chaplain Rich Carlson for two weeks with the People of Peru Project in Iquitos, Peru. The PA students join alumni nurses, physicians and dentists to run mobile medical clinics for villages along the Amazon River. “The PA students discover mission work and get a lot of valuable experience learning to treat and diagnose patients without all the equipment and testing we use here in the U.S.,” said Carlson.
