Model Train and Die Cast Show November 18

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN FVFD Honors Firefighters Killed in 1964 Crash

A model train and die cast show is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., November 18, at the Library Fire Company at 6851 Library Road (Route 88) in South Park. The Pittsburgh Independent Hi Railers will be in attendance with their 18-foot by 32-foot 0-gauge layout for children and adults. There will be 140 vendor tables that will be on display. Cyd West and her Comfort Catering service will provide hot food and beverages, and Evey True Value Hardware in Bethel Park will donate a model railroad train set. All proceeds from this raffle will go to the Boy Scouts of America. Last January, we presented a check to the Boy Scouts of America in the amount of $450. Admission cost is $5, $3 for senior citizens (over 65), and $1 for children. A few vendor tables are still available at $15 each, while all vendors will receive a free gourmet buffet breakfast courtesy of Comfort Catering. Model train-related clothing and hats will be available for sale. Over 1,200 attended January’s show. For further information, contact John Wozniak at 412 835-7487 or 412 420-0838, or email johnwozniak@comcast.net. Parking will be supervised with an additional 500 spots available at the Port Authority parking lot (across the street).

The plaque in front of FVFD honors the fireman who perished in a 1964 accident involving a fire truck.

By Paul Chasko

O

n September 13, 1964 residents of Finleyville and surrounding communities were stunned to learn that a terrible accident had occurred involving members of the Finleyville Fire Department (FVFD). While answering an emergency call to a gas well-head fire, the still-new F.W.D. fire engine rolled off the road on Bebout Road. According to FVFD Life Member Russ Allridge, the real cause of the accident was never determined. There were nine firemen aboard the big pumper late that Saturday evening – three lost their lives and six were injured. Those who died as a result of the accident were Arvin Kegel, John Stark and Roy Simmons. Each year on the anniversary of the tragedy the FVFD honor their fallen brothers who died in the tragedy by placing wreaths on their graves and on the bronze plaque at the front of the FVFD building. The membership vows never to forget the ultimate sacrifice of these three firemen.
