Melanie Stringhill Patterson

Running for Delegate to Republican Convention as Committed Donald Trump Supporter

Following the Super Tuesday primary success of Donald Trump, Melanie Stringhill Patterson made her formal announcement as a Delegate to the Republican Convention. She wants the voters to know that they can count on her to vote for Donald Trump alone as the Republican candidate for President in the 2024 General Election.

“In this year’s Presidential Election, we must ensure that the best candidate is elected. That candidate is Donald Trump – bar none,” stated Patterson.

“We are living in trying times. Our nation is a crossroads. We must secure for ourselves, our children and grandchildren, a prosperous and safe nation with Donald Trump as our President, added Patterson. “Otherwise, we will see runaway inflation, debt and misery for years to come.”

With rumors swirling in Republican circles that some delegates to the Republican Convention might not vote for Donald Trump at the Republican Convention this July, Patterson made it clear that she will have no part of such actions. She boldly stated her position by saying: “Any attempt to vote for another candidate other than Donald Trump would be a huge disaster for our nation. I will reject any and all attempts to replace Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for President in the 2024 General Election. You can count on me as a Donald Trump delegate without question.”

The Republican Convention will be held from July 15-July 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

California Church’s ‘Care and Share’ Thrift Shop a Beacon of Light to the Community

Located at California United Methodist Church in California, Pa, the ‘Care and Share’ Thrift Shop is available to people for anything from emergency fire victims’ supplies, bargain shopping for clothes or household items, to simply stopping in for browsing and some great conversation. Plans are underway for the store to work with residential homes for children and mothers escaping abuse to get them necessary items, along with various other agencies the church already aids.

It’s all done for the good of the community, according to store manager Norma Conley. New or gently used items are accepted, such as clothing, housewares, lamps, etc. Not accepted are electronics, TV‘s, and large furniture. The donation bin is always open to the public.

“When I moved back to the area after retirement from teaching, I started working at Care and Share and have been manager for the last 5 years,” said Conley. “It takes a dedicated team to operate the store where volunteers work practically

every weekday. Nothing goes to waste; items we can’t use are donated to the Salvation Army. We also offer weekly sales that keeps our customers happy.”

Weekly a team comes in, sorting through things, and discarded items go into a bag for the Salvation Army. Conley says they wouldn’t be able to do this without the Salvation Army, and of course, the volunteers, too.

“Hopefully, more people will find out about our bargains,” said Conley. Low prices are for the entire family too. Newborn-5T are 25-cents, Toddler-10 are 75-cents, 12-14 Kids are 75-cents, Women’s dresses are $2, Men’s shirts are $1.50, and Suits are $4. There are women’s and men’s shoes for $2. They also offer other merchandise, such as lamps, purses, books, seasonal items, etc.—stop in to see what all is offered.

The shop has been in operation for over 30 years now, begun by one of their church members, Betty Copenhaver. Betty had the idea about Care and Share while on vacation in Deep Creek, Md., where she

visited a church with a thrift store and the idea was born. At the time, many of the mines and mills had closed and she helped the community. The store has been open ever since, helping those in need and offering clothes and items at discount prices. Those in serious need are helped at no charge.

All this caring and sharing requires a lot of volunteering. If you think you have the heart of a volunteer to work for this shop, contact them at the church office at 724-938-2270. You are also invited to come visit Care and Share to enjoy the shopping and visit the staff: California United Methodist Church, 227 Third St., California, Pa. Care and Share shop hours are 2 days a week, Thursdays- 6:00PM –8:00PM, it is best to arrive early to avoid the rush. Also, Fridays9:00AM – 3:00PM. All are welcome.

Advancing spine health in the South Hills

19 April 2024 messengerpaper.com
From intense pain to near instant relief after herniated disc surgery.

For motorcycle riders like Joe Sever, summer is the ideal time to take life by the handlebars. With the excruciating pain of a herniated disc, however, that was out of the question. “Last summer was absolutely miserable.”

The human spine is made up of individual bones separated by spongy discs. Each disc has a jellylike center surrounded by a rubbery exterior. When the soft center pushes out through a tear in the tough exterior, this causes pressure on the spinal nerves, resulting in mild to severe pain.

This can happen due to age, injury, or in Joe’s case, a lifetime of hard, physical work. Joe’s debilitating pain led him to AHN Neurosurgery at Jefferson, where he explored a variety of pain management treatments before it was determined that surgery was his best option.

“Joe had an L4-L5 herniation in his lower back, just above the pelvis,” said Daniel Myers, MD, AHN Jefferson Hospital.

“He was a very motivated patient and didn’t require much postsurgical pain management, so we were able to perform the discectomy as an outpatient procedure and Joe went home that same day.”

Finally, Joe experienced the relief he had been hoping for. “It was an immediate night and day difference right after surgery. It took me a few weeks to get back on my feet, but the disc pain was gone — just like that!”

Today, Joe is completely pain free and is able to do everything he loves, including riding his motorcyle.

“Everyone at AHN Jefferson Hospital really went above and beyond for me. I trust them with everything and recommend them to anyone. My experience there was better than anywhere else in the area,” said Joe.

“The pain ran all the way down my left side to my heel. It was unbearable. But after Dr. Myers performed my surgery, the pain was almost instantly gone. I can’t speak highly enough of him and my entire experience at AHN Jefferson Hospital.”

We can help put your pain behind you.

Neck, back, and nerve pain can have many potential causes. But no matter why you have it, you just want it gone — ASAP. That’s why AHN Neurosurgery at Jefferson has a wide range of multidisciplinary experts who specialize in all forms of back, neck, and nerve problems all under one roof.

Conditions we treat

• Neck and back arthritis

• Spine conditions and stenosis

• Herniated disks

• Pinched nerves and sciatica

• Spine injuries, fractures, tumors, and infections

Getting patients back to better spine health.

“I treat patients, not images.” As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Myers’ approach is brilliantly simple.

“There’s no such thing as a cookie cutter spine surgery,” says Dr. Myers. “So it’s about understanding the patient as a whole. That’s why building trust, having that face time and growing the patient-doctor relationship is key.”

Neuroscience is ever-evolving, with advances that help to minimize invasiveness and risk. In addition to time with patients, it’s one of the things that Dr. Myers enjoys the most. “We’re constantly improving in terms of surgical techniques and patient outcomes. The best part about my job is seeing a patient after surgery and their pain is immediately gone and they’re feeling better.”

If you’re in pain, Dr. Myers wants you to know they have options. “All the things that are good for your body are good for your spine. But if you’re in pain, our goal is to make you feel better. We have all the capabilities to treat you right here in the community.”

No need to travel outside the community or go to different locations for tests and procedures. Receive the compassionate, comprehensive care you need from an experienced team of specialists. We offer a variety of techniques and treatment options tailored to treat your unique pain.

Ready For Your Best Lawn Ever?

3 Expert Spring Lawn Care Tips

(BPT) - As you make your list of spring cleaning chores, don't forget to add lawn care to the to-do list. "The key to a healthy, robust lawn is preparation. Early spring is a great time to revive and revitalize your lawn so you can enjoy it the rest of the year," says Matthew Koch, Ph.D., director of biotechnology, genetics, lawn fertilizer, and grass seed at The ScottsMiracle-Gro Company.

To help fellow lawn-owners, Dr. Koch and Scotts, a leader in lawn care, offer the following three expert lawn care tips to grow lush and healthy natural turfgrass throughout the season and beyond.

1. Feed and seed

After a long, sleepy winter, your lawn needs some help waking up. Dr. Koch recommends feeding your lawn, so it knows it's time to grow. Try a feed like Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action Built For Seeding. The formula prevents dandelion and crabgrass for up to 6 weeks without harming new grass, jumpstarts grass development, and feeds to protect against

heat and drought. Once your lawn is fed, it's time to seed! Look for small areas of grass that aren't growing and patch them with Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair Sun and Shade. The grass seed easily fills in bare spots on your lawn, even in tough conditions, including full sun, dense shade, hightraffic areas and on slopes. With a little TLC, your lawn will flourish in no time!

2. Prevent disease

As the spring months continue on, increased humidity and moisture create the perfect conditions for lawn disease to thrive. Look for brown or yellow patches, brown or black spots on the grass blades (leaf spots), white dust (powdery mildew) and red or pink webbing (red thread). Even if you don't see signs of disease, Dr. Koch emphasizes the importance of taking steps to prevent disease before it takes hold, and mid to late spring is the ideal time to take preventative measures.

Scotts Turf Builder Healthy Plus Lawn Food is the first ever 2-in-1 fungicide and fertilizer that uses broadspectrum and systemic fungicides to help prevent and control 27 types of lawn diseases. Best of all, the fertilizer helps your lawn grow thicker and greener by strengthening each blade of grass down to the roots.

3. Mow high

As your lawn comes in, don't cut it too short. When the grass grows tall enough, begin mowing at the highest setting. Mowing high allows grass to grow strong roots and thick blades, providing shade that can prevent weed growth.

Follow these three simple tips, and your grass will flourish.

All Things Duct Cleaning

Even with the proper use of filters, your home’s heating and cooling system gets really dirty through normal, everyday use, just as surfaces in your home get dusty over time.

All sorts of contaminants and air pollutants—bacteria, pet dander, dust, skin cells, mold, tobacco smoke, even chemicals—get pulled into an HVAC system and recirculate through the home several times a day, building up in the system.

Worse, rodents and insects can chew their way into the ductwork to travel throughout your home, build nests and leave droppings. Telltale signs include chewed materials, unpleasant smells, and bacteria contaminating the air you breathe.

All this can contribute to poor indoor air quality and major health issues, especially for those with respiratory conditions, autoimmune disorders, asthma, or allergies. The EPA says poor indoor air increases your risk of pneumonia and causes irritated eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

In addition, when the system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard so it lasts longer and uses less energy, lowering electric bills.

A Second Issue

Getting your ducts cleaned, however, can mean another problem:

Scams. The HVAC system cleaning industry is plagued with fraudulent “duct cleaners” who cause more harm than good by agitating rather than removing dust, debris, and pollutants or who charge for unneeded add-on services.

Fortunately, you can trust the members of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). They have technicians on staff with advanced training and certification in HVAC system cleaning, and they’re required to follow higher standards.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling,

culty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.

“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease,” said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it early.”

Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 12,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is noninvasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.

Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.

Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc. To contact Dr. Wang, please call 724-483-3688.

Whitehall Resident Victoria Schmotzer Announces Her Candidacy For Pa State Representative - 38th District

Victoria Schmotzer recently announced her candidacy for PA State Representative from the 38th Legislative District.

“We filed all the paperwork in Harrisburg and we are on the ballot,” said Schmotzer. “My team knocked on hundreds of doors and collected 653 Democratic signatures. We got over 150 signatures more than any other candidate.”

Victoria’s education and work experience lend themselves to the pressing issues of today. With a deep-rooted commitment to our communities, Victoria brings a vision and record of leadership to this Office.

“The next five weeks will be exciting and we are ready for the challenge,” Schmotzer says.

Victoria's platform is centered around key priorities identified by talking to residents of the district, as outlined on the campaign website (www.votersforvictoria.com): Term Limits, Higher Minimum Wage, Fight for Women’s Rights, Keep Children and Students Safe, Individualized Education Program (IEPs), Clean Air & Clean Water and Senior Citizen Services.

“The biggest problem is that all politicians want to do is get re-elected. The solution is Term Limits,” stated Schmotzer. “Every State Executive Office in the Commonwealth of PA is term limited. The Legislative Branch needs to follow suit. This will be the first bill I introduce in January 2025.”

A lifelong resident of Whitehall, Victoria graduated from Baldwin High School and The Catholic University of America with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from the St. Thomas Aquinas School of Philosophy and a Master’s Degree in Business from the Busch School of Business. Professionally, she has held roles as a Human Resources Specialist at the U.S. Small Business Administration (U.S. Government Level 5 Security Clearance), a Teacher in Early Childhood Development and a Staff Auditor at a CPA Firm.

Active in her community, Victoria was the youngest person ever elected to the PA State Democratic Committee and is currently the Elected Constable for Whitehall, where she supervises Deputies at each of the 16 Voting Districts to facilitate fair and impartial elections.

Victoria Schmotzer's candidacy represents a commitment to improving the lives of all residents. With her proven record of advocacy and unwavering commitment to public service, Victoria is ready to lead the 38th District to a brighter and more equitable future.
