Washington County Farm Bureau Donates to Ronald McDonald House In honor of Food Checkout Day, the Washington County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee took donations of paper products, restaurant gift cards, and pop can tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh. Food Check Out Day is the day of the year when the average American family has earned enough income to pay their food bill for the entire year. Food Check Out Day also celebrates the safe, abundant, affordable, nutriLisa Wherry, Women's Committee Chairman tious food that the American farmer grows. Food Check Out Day and week has been celebrated by the PA Farm Bureau for many years and for most County Farm Bureaus it is used to collect needed food and other items for the local Ronald McDonald house or their local food pantry. “We donated well over $100 worth of paper products and gift cards today, and we are looking for additional community support. This will be an ongoing drive, with an annual drop-off,” Women’s Committee Chairman Lisa Wherry. “Anyone interested in donating restaurant gift cards for families to use while staying at the Ronald McDonald House, paper products, pop tabs, or even magazines or newspapers can give me a call. We want to continue to support our local families in need while bringing attention to the contributions that agriculture provides to families across the nation. Washington Rotary Hosts 11th Annual Charity Trivia Contest Put on your thinking cap! It is time for the Washington Rotary Club's 10th Annual Rotary Charity Trivia Contest to be held on Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Three Rivers Auction House, Washington. Rotary will donate $1,000 to the charity of the winning team's choice, $500 to the second place team's charity, and $250 to the third place team's charity. The event consists of 50 questions segmented into 10 categories of five questions each. All teams play simultaneously, with answers written on a notecard and scores tabulated by the quizmasters and scorekeepers. In between rounds, activities include door prize drawings and a raffle auction. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Last year, a total of 200 people and 33 teams participated. Net proceeds donated to the Rotary Foundation, which funds international projects that provide health care, clean water, food, education, and other essential needs in the developing world. Teams must consist of a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight; team size is strictly enforced. The entry fee is $30 per team member and includes pizza, snacks, and beverages. The fee for all spectators is also $30 per person, and spectators and cheerleaders are not permitted to sit with teams during game play. Hop Over to Bunny Trolley at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Join us as the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum opens for its 50th season with one of our favorite events, “Bunny Trolley.” Ride a beautifully restored antique trolley to see the Easter Bunny on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 22-24, and Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ongoing activities include an Easter Egg Hunt, games for the family, a springtime craft activity, and photos with the Easter Bunny. Friends of South Park Plan Events for 2013 Friends of South Park, the County Park view 2012 as a successful year by totaling 1,096 hours of service. Volunteer hours did not include time spent on three successful fundraising events, which included a golf outing in May, a flea market in September, and a wine tasting event in October. Fundraising events yielded a combined total of $8,735. The Friends also sponsored cleanup days in the spring and fall and launched a solar lighting project for the illumination of Corrigan Drive by securing sponsors for 12 lights. This summer, the Friends plan to rebuild the fitness trail along McConkey Road. County Executive Rich Fitzgerald has visited the Friends twice to discuss improvements to South Park, specifically the South Park Fairgrounds Oval Project. The Friends will host five public events in 2013: an Oldies Dance in March, an April 20 Spring Clean-Up Day, a golf outing on May 18, a Fall Clean-Up Day, and a fall wine tasting event. The “Oldies in the Park” dance will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Home Economics Building in South Park. Tickets are $25, which includes food catered by Our Little Secret, mixers, and soda (BYOB). DJ will be Charlie Apple of radio station WLSW 103.9. MVH Helps to Keep Troops Happy

When Paul Cervone, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist with Valley Women’s Health and a colonel in the PA Army National Guard, was deployed to Afghanistan earlier this year, the Mon Valley Hospital employees who work with him in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (AML ECC) missed passing him in the lobby. When they learned that he and his fellow soldiers were craving some of their favorite snacks from home, MVH’s Community Relations Dept. quickly mobilized and organized a care package drive among some of his hospital coworkers. When the box arrived, Dr. Cervone wrote to express his thanks. Dr. Cervone is expected back in the next two months and will resume seeing patients in his offices on the campus of Mon Valley Hospital and in the HealthPLEX in Belle Vernon this spring.

Guy Reschenthaler Announces Candidacy for District Magistrate Iraq War veteran Guy Reschenthaler of Jefferson Hills will run for the Allegheny County District Guy Reschenthaler Magistrate Judge 05-2-16 seat that will be vacated in January 2014 by the Honorable Pat Capolupo, who is not seeking re-election. Reschenthaler, 29, is a South Hills native who served in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General Corps after graduating from Duquesne University School of Law. While on active duty, Reschenthaler deployed to Baghdad, where he prosecuted 92 terrorists. Serving as the Officer-in-Charge of the Texas-Oklahoma Area of Operations from 2010 to the spring of 2012, Reschenthaler litigated numerous cases, earning the Michael Taylor Shelby Award for ethics, dedication, and professionalism in federal litigation. Since returning to Jefferson Hills, Reschenthaler practices law in a South Hills law firm, defending businesses against frivolous lawsuits. He is also handling a high-profile appeal of a Navy SEAL wrongfully discharged after exercising his First Amendment right of free speech. “Right-Pricing” Critical to Getting it Sold Have you noticed that there have been fewer homes available for sale locally? Compared to other years, real estate residential inventory in our area has been well below the number usually for sale at any given time. In fact, many local areas are experiencing actual shortages of homes for buyers. Because of these overall low inventory levels, we are seeing savvy homeowners listing now, as opposed to waiting until late spring, in the hope of maximizing their return. If you want to sell your property before summer, the right thing to do is to list now. An ongoing problem we continue to see is homeowners listing at unrealistic prices. The issue is that
while the market is improving slightly, jumping the gun by listing with an unrealistically high asking price will not get your home sold and will actually cause you to lose money in long run. We’re all hearing the good news that nationally and locally prices are moving upward. However, it is not rising by leaps and bounds in our part of the country and therefore does not warrant huge increases in local home prices. Many homeowners are taking the good news as a sign that they can get unrealistic prices for their homes—this is not the case. I’m not saying that a lowball price is acceptable, either. What I am saying is that your price must be realistic to sell your home. As the homeowner, it is not your job to determine what the most realistic price of your property should be. This is the responsibility of your real estate agent. The job of a good real estate agent is to look at the available data and take into account several variables, including true market conditions, to help you determine a realistic price. Pricing property or taking a listing is the major responsibility of a good agent. More than ever, your agent needs to educate you and inform you of the true market conditions in your area. The true pulse of the market lies within the closed data, not in the prices your neighbors have their homes listed for right now. Many agents continue to accept overpriced listings, which only gives the seller false hope and will prolong the actual sale. In most cases, this creates a missed opportunity to get a sale as well. One good way to assess the situation in a specific area is to compare

This is typically an indication that these properties are not priced correctly. It is very important to note that the lenders and buyers control the current real estate market. I don’t like it either, however, that is the brutal truth. Sellers should understand the best pricing practices and hire a real estate agent who also understands the process. This will ensure that their home sells in a timely manner and for the most money possible. Pricing a home correctly from the beginning (as opposed to pricing it higher to leave room for negotiations) will actually get you more money. Once again, your real estate agent needs to be honest and deliver the truth as to the true market conditions and to “right price” your property. Cub Scouts Race for the Gold Monongahela Pack 1446 Holds Pinewood Derby By Paul Chasko
Cub Scouts everywhere look forward to the annual Pinewood Derby, and this year’s race was an exciting one for those in Monongahela’s Pack 1446. There were a few happy trophy winners, and other cubs going home just with their cars and big plans for next year’s race. Cub Scout Pack 1446 is sponsored by the Monongahela United Methodist Church, and the race was held in the church activity room. The Pinewood Derby event has been an annual activity for Cub Scouts for quite a long time. Kids start out with a kit consisting of a block of wood, axles, and wheels and then let creativity take over to finish with the fastest and best-looking car. Weights of the gravity-powered cars are adjusted at a weigh-in prior to the race so they all weigh the same. The track was state-of-the-art with an all-electronic finishing line. This is a necessity, as some of the 300 or so races run were too close to call by eye. In fact several were ties and had to be re-run. DEP Planning Module Delays Dollar General Opening in UT By Paul Chasko
The construction schedule of the new Dollar General Store on Route 88 in Union Township was delayed by changes in project management inside Dollar General as well as securing state approval for a sewage tapin. According to Rick Kovach of the Peters Creek Sanitary Authority, there was never a problem or holdup with the PCSA, as sewer taps were available in 2012. He explained, “Any time there’s a subdivision requiring a sewer tap, particularly near a flood plain, it’s necessary for the property owner to complete a planning module with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Dollar General, headquartered in Tennessee, was unaware of this usually lengthy procedure, but the process is now completed and PCSA has signed off on a sewage tap permit.” Kovach believes that Dollar General is now free to apply for a building permit with Union Township. Completing the DEP process has delayed Dollar General’s schedule a little longer than expected. Union Township Zoning Officer Harold Ivery confirmed this to be the case, saying, “Dollar General now needs only to pay the building permit fee, and they can start construction.”

Plans Under Way for Pleasant Hills Lions Club Farmers’ Market Planning is underway for the 2013 Pleasant Hills Lions Club Farmers’ Market, according to Lions Club President Michael Zaken. The market will be held every Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 7 p.m., May 16 through October 17, in the parking lot of the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church at the corner of Audrey Drive and Old Clairton Road. “This is our 7th year of sponsoring the Farmers’ Market and is part of our club’s efforts to serve the community,” said Zaken. “It’s been a big success, and the whole community looks forward to it. The money we make from hosting the market and other events we sponsor has enabled us to distribute thousands of dollars to local charities and organizations in addition to help support Lions Club International’s efforts to eradicate blindness.” Roy Fowler, Chairman of the Farmers’ Market Planning Committee, said the market typically attracts 500-900 customers on an average Thursday. “We’ve had great support from our local farmers and normally have 15-20 vendors selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to organic meat, pies, jams, flowers, and a variety of fresh-baked breads,” said Fowler. “We hope to make the market even better this year by adding more vendors and expanding the variety of products sold. Representative Rick Saccone honored emergency first responders throughout the 39th Legislative District on Friday, January 18 at the New Hope Assembly of God Church in Elizabeth Township. During this Second Annual Recognition Dinner, each person honored was nominated by the chief of his/her department as Firefighter, Police Officer, or Paramedic of the Year. A state citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives was presented to each awardee. Bethel Park Judge Rob Wyda Runs for Superior Court Rob Wyda of Bethel Park, a magisterial district judge for 13 years who has also served as a Navy judge advocate in Afghanistan and Iraq, has announced his candidacy for Pennsylvania Superior Court. 1985 graduate of Duquesne Law School, Wyda has been entrusted with one of the largest magisterial districts in Pennsylvania, adjudicating about 4,000 cases a year. Before his election as judge in 1999, he served Allegheny County as a prosecuting attorney, court administrator, and assistant county solicitor. He was reelected judge without opposition in 2005 and 2011. Wyda carries the rare distinction of having served in three antiterrorist theatres with the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps. Between 2003 and 2008 he fulfilled assignments in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "I take great pride and satisfaction in knowing that I have contributed directly to the prosecution and conviction of our nation's enemies," Wyda said. Wyda and his wife, Shannon, have lived in Bethel Park throughout their 25-year marriage. They have two children, ages 18 and 21.

Scholarships for Students With ADHD Available Through Shire Shire, a global specialty biopharmaceutical company, is again offering its 2013 ADHD Scholarship Program for individuals diagnosed with AttentionDeficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) who are pursuing higher education at a college, vocational school, or technical school. The Shire ADHD Scholarship includes a $2,000 monetary award and offers a prepaid year of ADHD coaching services from the Edge Foundation to assist the scholarship recipient with the transition to higher education. Blane Black Announces Candidacy for Court of Common Pleas of Washington County Monongahela Attorney Blane A. Black has announced his candidacy for one of two vacancies on the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County. Mr. Black is a Charleroi native and maintains his law office in Monongahela. He resides in South Strabane Twp. where he and his wife have raised their four children who all attended and graduated from Trinity Area schools. Mr. Black has been a practicing attorney for over 31 years. “I am very much concerned about the fact that Blane Black our Court is now operating with only 4 judges instead of our allotted 6. With my many years of experience, I believe that I can help fill the void,” noted Black. “Most likely, the new judges will have to assume duties dealing with family-related and criminal matters. Having raised four children of my own and with my general practice background, I will not need any on-the-job training.” Mr. Black received his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh, in 1978, and then received his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1981. He previously served as a Support Hearing Officer for Washington County. He serves on the County Board of Viewers and has participated in the Court’s Civil Mediation Program and has been appointed by the Court to preside over civil mini-trials. He currently serves as Solicitor for the Washington County Department of Tax Revenue and handles all tax assessment and tax claim litigation matters for the County. He also serves as General Counsel for the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority, Solicitor for Dunlevy, Roscoe, and Smithton Boroughs, Solicitor for RESA Regional Police and is also the current Solicitor for the Recorder of Deeds and former Solicitor for the county Prothonotary. He is also the 2013 president of the Washington County Bar Association, treasurer of the Washington County Bar Foundation, and is an active member of the Monongahela Rotary Club.

Costanzo Announces Candidacy for Judge Magisterial District Judge Valarie Costanzo has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County. Judge Costanzo has adjudicated more than 50,000 cases during her courtroom career. She presides over criminal, civil, landlord/tenant, traffic, and summary cases and is responsiValarie Costanzo ble for issuing arrest warrants and search warrants. "With a prolonged vacancy on the court and a backlog of cases, it's imperative that the county elects a qualified and experienced judge who doesn't need on-thejob training," Costanzo explained. "For the past 14 years, I've been in the courtroom on a daily basis, demonstrating my ability to closely listen to all parties, apply the law in an even-handed way, and render prompt decisions." In 1998, Costanzo was appointed district judge by former Governor Tom Ridge. She was elected to a full term in 1999, and twice won re-election in 2005 and 2011. Costanzo is a former Washington County Assistant District Attorney who prosecuted over 1,500 criminal cases. She was instrumental in the development and implementation the county's "Fast Track Program," which saves taxpayer dollars by expediting a criminal case from the preliminary hearing stage to a final plea before the Court of Common Pleas. Costanzo has been an attorney in private practice for the past 18 years, handling a variety of civil matters. Costanzo was born and raised in Washington County and is a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 1991. Costanzo went on to obtain her law degree from the University Of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1994 and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

Iddy Biddy Fashions, a consignment shop for children, has re-opened in its new location at Donaldson’s Crossroads Plaza. Located in the mini-mall next to The Little Gym and Citizens Bank, the new shop is more than double the size of its prior space on Valleybrook Road. The South Hills Chamber of Commerce will host the South Hills Small Business Institute’s series of workshops presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor throughout the year. The Social Security program treats all workers - men and women - exactly the same in terms of the benefits they can receive. But women may want to familiarize themselves with what the program means to them in their particular circumstances. One of the most significant things women need to remember about Social Security is the importance of promptly reporting a name change. If you haven't
told us of a name change, your W-2 may not match the information in Social Security's records and this could affect the amount of your future benefits. Not changing your name with Social Security also can delay your federal income tax refund. To report a name change,fill out an application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5). You can get the form by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov, or any Social Security office or card center, or by calling Social Security's toll-free number, 1800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You must show us certain identity documents. If expanding your family is in your plans, it's a good idea to apply for a
Social Security number for your baby in the hospital, at the same time that you apply for your baby's birth certificate. Social Security will mail the card to you. If you wait, you must then separately provide evidence of your child's age, identity, and U.S. citizenship status, as well as proof of your identity. Then, we must verify your child's birth record, which can add 12 weeks. When women start receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, other family members may be eligible for payments as well. For example, benefits can be paid to a husband: If he is age 62 or older or At any age, if he is caring for your child (the child must be younger than

Research Your Broker As You Would A Stock (NAPS)—Investing some time and effort in researching your stockbroker—just as you would if he or she were a security—can pay dividends. That’s the word from experts who say before working with a broker or other financial professional, make sure that person is licensed to sell you an investment. One way to do this is by using a free online tool from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) called BrokerCheck. To use the online tool, go to www.finra.org/brokercheck. You can look up a specific firm or investment professional. You can also search by zip code. WHEN RESEARCHING INDIVIDUALS, THE TOOL CAN BE USED TO FIND: • employment history; • approved licenses, registrations, and qualification exams passed; • certain misdemeanor charges and convictions; and • disciplinary actions and sanctions imposed by FINRA, the SEC or other regulators. When researching a firm, the tool can be used to find: • its address, legal status and types of business it engages in; • a 10-year history of all felony charges and convictions, and certain
misdemeanor charges and convictions; • disciplinary actions and proceedings initiated by regulators; and • bankruptcy proceedings and arbitration award information. Even if an individual or firm does not have a history of reported problems, the tool can help detect potential red flags. For example, you can see if an individual broker has switched firms frequently over a short period of time, or if the firm has changed its name often.
The First Step “The first step any investor should take before he or she does business is to use BrokerCheck to do a background search,” said Gerri Walsh, president of FINRA Investor Education Foundation. “Make sure the investment professional is licensed either with FINRA as a registered representative or with the SEC or a state regulator as a registered investment adviser.” It’s also a good idea to check with your state securities regulator, local consumer groups or others who have business relationships with a particular financial professional. Nicholas Gindele Obtains Eagle Scout Rank By Paul Chasko
On Sunday, February 10, Nicholas Gindele was acknowledged as having completed all the requirements of the Eagle Rank at a Court of Honor conducted in Finley Hall of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville. Present at the ceremony were members and leaders of Troop 1300, sponsored by Nick Gindele of Boy Scout Troop 1300, sponsored by Thomas Presbyterian Church Thomas Presbyterian Church of Eighty Four, proudly displays his Eagle Certificate with his dad, of Eighty Four, members of Gerry, and mom, Cheryl, at his side. Gindele’s family, and many friends. Also present was Washington County Commissioner Harlan G. Shober Jr., who presented a certificate of achievement from the Washington County Commissioners. Every aspiring Eagle Scout must complete a significant community service project. As his project, Gindele chose to renovate the interior of St. Francis Church’s Finley Hall. He planned and carried out the project with help from fellow scouts, his parents, and others. Gindele also was inducted into the Boy Scout Honor Society, The Order of the Arrow, in September of 2009. He received the Order Brotherhood Honor in August of 2010 and became the Chapter Chief in December of 2011. Other special honors include a World Conservation Award, the Twin Arrow Staff, and the Pope Pius Catholic Religious Emblem. Gindele is a 10th grade PA Cyber Student and has aspirations to attend college and study political science and business management. Ringgold Elementary School North held its annual Science Fair in January. Open to students in grades 3, 4, and 5, 60 students submitted 34 individual/group projects. Judging was handled by retired teachers Gary Anselmino (Science - Finley Middle School) and Ernie Koontz (Chemistry/Physics Upper St. Clair High School). They have not only been busy singing and dancing, they have been showing off their culinary knowledge as well. Ringgold School Board Delays Payment for Studies Conducted By Paul Chasko
At the February meeting of the Ringgold School Board, past due bills for payment to architect/engineers HHSDR were addressed. These bills, were for studies seeking information about building a new middle school. Services related to a new middle school at the Ringgold High School site $9,977.00 Building evaluations of Donora Elementary Center, Monongahela Elementary Center, and Ringgold Middle School - $50,369.50 Services related to the proposed Ringgold Intermediate School Renovations (Donora Elementary Center) - $11,309.50 Services related to the proposed Ringgold Middle School (Monongahela Elementary Center) - $20,159.00 Total $91,815.00 An innocuous request to the architects, such as “Can you estimate how much it would cost to …,” comes with a price tag, so bills for these manhours added up quickly. Payment has been tabled and delayed, because HHSDR raised its hourly rate without bringing the increase to the board for approval. Solicitor Berggren informed the board that paying past bills to HHSDR, in effect, acknowledged acceptance of the higher rate. He also added, “The board is legally obligated to pay the bills, and if they are not paid, board members voting ‘no’ may be subject to being personally surcharged.” Current Board President Mariann

Ringgold High School Presents “Willy Wonka”
Bulko, with the help of the board majority, is trying to get the building of the new middle school underway in spite of these delays. The old DEC and MEC buildings in Donora and Monongahela will be appraised for sale. The terms of seven of the existing board members end this year, and some worry that a new board could begin this cycle of debate once again, costing the Ringgold taxpayers even more.
Board Approves Hiring of Chief of Security The board approved the hiring of Clayton Schell, a retired state police officer from Venetia, as Chief of Security of the Ringgold School District at a salary of $42,000. Several board members strongly opposed this hiring, believing it was a duplication of a position currently held by Thomas Thompson. Board member Chuck Smith shouted, “This board is throwing money away.” Board member Bob Smith stated that he had spoken with local police, and they could provide the required services. Bulko stated that she’d made the same inquires, and there was no interest. Several board members wished to postpone this decision until additional security guidelines were available from federal and state sources. The vote for hiring was 5/4, with Smith, Mauro, Smith and Kennedy voting in opposition. All nine board members were present as were the solicitor, secretary/treasurer, superintendent and members of the administration.

SCHOOL NEWS St. Katharine Drexel School Students Share Knowledge and Service Fourth grade science classes at St. Katharine Drexel School had an Adaptation Fashion Show, where students dressed in animal costumes and gave a briefing on their chosen animal's adaptations. They then presented the show to other grades. Students conducted a hat/sock/gloves drive for the Salvation Army during the month of January. On February 4, they presented a large box of these items for adults and children to Major Paul Moore. They also gave him a cash donation from those families who chose to send in money. St. Katharine Drexel School is currently accepting registrations for the 2013-14 school year. Although Belle Vernon won tournament gold, Yough, a lower seed in the tourney, surprised everyone by defeating second-seeded Penn Hills and took second place in the Ringgold Ram Slam Girls’ Soccer Tournament on February 16. The event featured an exciting field of participating girls’ soccer teams. Indoor soccer gives players an opportunity to keep their skills sharp and legs strong during the months when snow is usually covering the outdoor pitch. The Ringgold gymnasium is one of the larger floors in the area and offers a good venue for the sport. The other obvious advantage is that spectators are much closer to the play than in outdoor soccer. It’s fast and exciting—almost a different game played with a different ball that has less bounce. Fifteen teams took part in the tournament and placed in three brackets with some schools fielding two teams. The preliminary games ran all day with each team playing at least two games (double elimination).

SOUTH PARK ROLLER HOCKEY (SPRHL) 2013 It's that time of the year again as we kick off a new season of South Park Roller Hockey. Age groups are 18 & under, 16 & under, 14 & under, 12 & under, 10 & under, and a Learn-to-Play Group. Whether you are a seasoned player or planning to play for the first time, SPRHL will have a draft so teams are evenly matched. Teams will be devised based on age group and draft pick. The league is open to all communities, and the games will be played at the South Park Outdoor Roller Rink on Corrigan and Maple Springs drives. The season runs from April to August, with one or two practices or games per week, played during the week (Monday–Thursday, 6-10 p.m.). Playoffs and a championship game will be held July 27 and 28 with August 3 and 4 as rainout dates. Registration will take place at the South Park Community Center Monday, March 4 from 6 - 8 p.m.; Tuesday, March 19 from 7 - 9 p.m.; and Saturday, March 23 from 11-1 p.m. The cost of registration is $125 for all age groups and $80 for the Learn-to-Play Group. The age group is determined by the player's age as of January 1, 2013. New players must present birth certificate. All registrants must bring medical insurance information. Union Finley Midget Football Association 2013 Registration Come and join the Bear Nation! The Union Finley Midget Football Association is holding registration for returning and new football players and cheerleaders for the 2013 Season. Returning player and cheerleader registration will be held on Saturday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New player and cheerleader registration will be Saturday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registrations for both dates will take place at the Ringgold Middle School cafeteria. Child’s age on the date of July 31 determines the age group he or she will be placed in. Please bring copy of birth certificate. Union Finley has been successfully competing in the Mon Valley Midget Football League for 39 years. This program has been and continues to be a successful feeder program for the surrounding school districts from which the players from Union Finley represent. Many graduates of this program have gone on to be members of WPIAL and state championship teams for their school districts. Registration is open to all boys and girls in the Finleyville, South Park, Monongahela, Bethel Park, Peters Township, and Nottingham Township communities. Tiny Mite (flag) is for 5-7 year olds, Termites is for 8-9 year olds, Mighty Mites is for 10-11 year olds, and Midgets is for 12-13 year olds, for both football and cheerleading. The league provides all equipment and uniforms. Keep an eye out for advertisements for the 2013 Season registration dates in future editions of this publication. Chatham University Honors Ringgold Cross-Country/Track Mother-Daughter Duo By Paul Chasko
Ringgold Sophomore Kirsten McMichael and her mother, Ringgold Coach Jennifer McMichael, recently received awards from Chatham University. On February 8, at Chatham University’s Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration, Kirsten McMichael received the Patience Blayden Spirit of Sports Award in the high school sophomore category. The award recognizes the accomplishments of regional female high school and college students making positive contributions in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community. Jennifer McMichael Received the Outstanding Coach Award, which honors a coach who positively affects her school and athletes’ experiences. This was the first mother-daughter duo to be honored at Chatham’s annual event. Kirsten has medaled in numerous
events in cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track while taking all advanced classes and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is currently ranked number one in her class. She devotes much of her free time to the community, serving the Salvation Army, Humane Society, and running a two-week, cross-country camp for middle school and high school students. She is team captain in all three sports and has lettered in every sport season. Last year, she was the Washington County Champion, Mingo Classic Champion, a Tri State medalist, a WPIAL medalist, and a PIAA state qualifier in cross-country. In indoor track, she qualified for and medaled in the Tri-State Track and Field Coaches Association Championships in the mile and 3,000 meter runs. She was overall champion in many races in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs. Jennifer McMichael has been coaching at Ringgold for 13 years. She started
as the assistant boys/girls coach for outdoor track and went on to found the middle school cross-country program, offering her time as head coach. Homeschool Outdoor Classroom Where’s Me Pot-o-Gold? The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a Homeschool Outdoor Classroom at Mingo Creek County Park on Thursday, March 14 at the park office. Two sessions are available: Session I will begin at 10 a.m. and Session II will begin at 1 p.m. Students and their families will be introduced to geocaching as they search for a pot-o-gold hidden in the park. Rainbows won’t be needed, as we will use a handheld global positioning device (GPS) to outwit the leprechaun and be the first to find his treasure! We will have a limited number of GPS units to utilize, but if you have a handheld device in which you can enter latitude and longitude coordinates, let us know upon registration and bring it with you. Please note that this program is designed for homeschooled children ages 5 to 11. Mon Valley Hospital Offers Multiphasic Blood Analysis Just a small blood sample can detect diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys and circulatory system. Mon Valley Hospital is sponsoring a multiphasic blood analysis screening, Saturday, March 23, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. Registration is required. On each blood sample, 36 individual tests will be performed that can reveal anemia, lung disease, diabetes, leukemia, high cholesterol, blood disorders and much more. Additional screenings, including Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA), will also be available for a small additional cost. MVH’s multiphasic blood analysis is open to the public at a cost of only $25/person. Testing is done by pre-registration and appointment only. Registrations are being accepted until Wednesday, March 20 — Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 724-258-1282. Participants are asked to provide the full name and complete address of the physician to whom their test results will be sent. Medical professionals from the laboratory at MVH will conduct the testing. The procedure takes between 15 and 20 minutes. Light refreshments are served after testing is completed. A 12-hour fasting period is required prior to testing. Persons on medication should consult their physicians.

Monongahela Valley Hospital Doctor Elected to Medical Society Post Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Edward M. Stafford, M.D., an otolaryngologist or ear, nose and throat surgeon, with Washington ENT, was elected to serve as president of the Washington County Medical Society in January. He has served as presDr. Edward M. Stafford ident-elect for the past year. Dr. Stafford practices comprehensive otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at offices in Carroll Twp. and in Washington. He is a 2002 graduate of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He completed residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in 2007 at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City. Following this, he completed a fellowship in advanced head and neck surgical oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Stafford also serves as a volunteer physician with Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh and is the author of several peer-reviewed manuscripts and invited book chapters on the topic of head and neck cancer. He resides in Pittsburgh.

Seniors for Safe Driving Upcoming Events Seniors for Safe Driving presents highway safety education programs for Seniors 55 years of age and older. The highway safety programs are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The successful completion of the program makes seniors eligible for a 5 percent discount on their automobile insurance premiums, across the board, for a period of three years. The discount is mandated by Pennsylvania state law. If you have never participated in a Senior Driving Program before, you must attend a two-day program. LifeSpan's Mon Valley Center Set to Open in March LifeSpan’s Mon Valley at Olympia Community Resource Center is nearing its grand opening this month. The relocation of the Mon Valley Center will increase the number of area seniors served while simultaneously increasing the quality and variety of services provided. The new 9,600-square-foot space located at the former Rite Aid location in the Olympia Shopping Center has many exciting features including: Reception area offering the most current information on monthly activities. Easter Egg Hunts/ Breakfast With the Bunny Join us at Trax for our Easter Egg Hunts and Breakfast with the Bunny. No reservations are required for the egg hunts, but order tickets ($7) early as spots are limited. Egg hunts start at 10:30 a.m. and last until 2 p.m., starting every 30 minutes. Easter Breakfast with the Bunny will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24; Good Friday, March, 29; and Saturday, March 30. Each child will receive a filling breakfast of cereal with milk, mini donuts, orange drink, and a fresh apple. The child will then get to visit the bunny, do a fun craft, and enter our coloring contest. For parents, fresh coffee, muffins, bagels, and more breakfast goodies are available. Reservations are required ($8). The afternoon session is $25, and presenters will discuss organic
pest control and making a terrarium. Both sessions are just $35 if you pre-register by March 9.
Lenten Dinners Lenten foods are available from our deli every Friday during Lent. In our hot case, baked or battered fish sandwiches and dinners are offered until 5 p.m. every Friday during Lent. Lenten salads and soups are also available. The Jumbo Battered or Baked Fish Sandwich Dinner includes a battered or baked fish served on a freshly baked bun with lettuce and tartar sauce with homemade cole slaw and your choice of macaroni and cheese or haluski—all of this for just $7.99 a dinner! Giant Oaks Garden Club Wins Horticulture Award Giant Oaks Garden Club of McMurray is proud to announce that, of 89 nominations, Pennsylvania Horticulture Society awarded it the 2012 PHS Community Greening Award for designing, implementing, planting, and maintaining the entrance to the Peters Township Library and Municipal Building. New Eagle’s Riverview Baptist Church to Host Spaghetti Dinner Riverview Baptist Church in New Eagle will host a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, March 10 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the church’s social hall. Money raised from the dinner will go towards the cost of sending a group from the church to Haiti. They will help construct a “rubble” house for a homeless earthquake victim during the week they will be there in April. There is no set charge for the dinners, but donations will be accepted. The mission trip is being conducted in association with A.m.erican Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware (ABCOPAD). The church is located at 405 Main St. (Rt. 88), New Eagle. We are looking for members and past members who have been part of our church. If you have a memory you would like to share, please send it. The United Methodist women continue to make prayer blankets. The women are also making pillowcase dresses for Dress a Girl Around the World. Pillowcases, new or used, can be donated.
