Cemetery Hill Cleans Up Its Act Thanks to Volunteers
T
he two-year project to enhance the entrance to Palmer Park in Donora has been completed and the wait was well worth it. The entrance was a safety factor as the hillside extended to the road, causing a sight hazard for passing motorists. A new water attraction greets visitors to Palmer Park in Donora. It started with the Chesapeake Energy natural gas drillers’ desire to show community spirit while being a good neighbor. Chesapeake Energy personnel helped cut back the hillside to eliminate the condition. With the initial excavation complete, Tim Durka, Donora Street Commissioner, contacted the Donora Downtown Committee with the idea of a joint effort to continue to improve the view of the entrance. The committee consented and an interesting project was born. First, a plan was generated to construct a waterfall with landscaping. The Downtown Committee furnished the design and presented it for approval. Each of the “teammates” began to take their turn in helping move the project forward. Mr. Durka and his street crew did a stellar job of placing stone. Wally Rea of Monongahela Iron and Metal provided a heavy-duty fork lift to assist the street crew. Bob Patterson of Pittsburgh Flexicore also utilized a fork lift while Mr. Rea’s lift was serviced. Next, Bob contributed cement for sealing the water trough. Free stone was provided by Val and Ray Iacoboni of Val’s Beer Distributor and Car Wash in Belle Vernon. Herman Alvarez of El Grande offered the use of a low boy trailer to transport the stone to the site. Another truck driver transported heavy equipment. Larry Swift of Eastern Alloy manufactured a stainless steel attachment for the water system. The Donora Fire Company supplied water for the pond and plants. Del Suppo Inc. installed the pump and supporting equipment and contributed piping and fittings for the system. Finally, the Downtown Committee installed electrical wiring, lighting and the water system. The committee members would like to thank all key team players for their involvement in making this project such a huge success!
The Monongahela Rotary Club, along with Ringgold Interact, is responsible for cleaning litter along Rt.88 (Cemetery Hill) twice a year. The fall clean up was held on October 8th.
