Mon Valley YMCA Sponsors 3rd Annual John Barbero Memorial Sports Auction
T
he Mon Valley YMCA is sponsoring the 3rd Annual John Barbero Memorial Auction on Sunday, November 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to honor the memory of John Barbero, longtime public address announcer of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Proceeds from the auction will be used to award a scholarship each year in John’s honor to a deserving high school senior from our Valley and to help underwrite programs for youth and teen activities. In addition to the auctions and cash prize drawings, some of the events will include complimentary pizza, cookies and beverages, face painting, balloon art, plus special visits from the Pirate Parrot, Steely McBeam, Iceburg and Froggy. Over $5,000 in cash and prizes will be given away with a drawing every half hour beginning at 1:30 p.m. Prizes include $1,000 and two $500 cash prizes, a flat screen TV with stand, a Flex-steel luxury recliner and a YMCA family membership. The live auction items include a Steelers ticket package, Penguins ticket package and other sports celebrity memorabilia to be announced. The silent auction offers sporting event tickets, gift certificates for dining out, goods and services with a special section set-up by Don Spagnolo, Steel City Auction that features autographed sports and celebrity memorabilia with certificates of authenticity. Ticket cards with 25 chances can be purchased for the Chinese auction featuring gift baskets and items from local Valley businesses. The committee is encouraging local businesses, professionals or individuals that would like to support youth and teen programming and the scholarship fund to contact the Y or committee members to donate sports event and cultural tickets, vacation retreats, services, gift certificates for merchandise and dining out or re-gift new items that will never be used. Tickets are $5 per person with no charge for children under 12. To purchase tickets contact the Y at 724-483-8077.
