FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to the latest issue of K&B (Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly ). If you’ve picked us up before, you’ve probably noticed that we have a new look. In keeping with our commitment to ensure quality content and the latest in design for those on the build or renovate journey, we’ve overhauled our look and come up with a fresh layout for our readers. But don’t get distracted by our new pretty exterior, inside we’ve got a plethora of kitchen and bathroom delights.

The highlight of the design calendar in New Zealand is always the announcement of the winners of the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards – and this year is no di fferent. As the offi cial publication of the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA), K&B is given the fi rst opportunity to publish all the winners in full. We have dedicated over 60 pages to the awards in this issue, with a detailed look at many of the winning entries and designers. Turn to page 34 for the start of our awards special.

As you thumb through the award-winning designs, what becomes immediately apparent is the depth of talent we have here in New Zealand. The diversity of the designs is also surprising. From large contemporary showstopping kitchens to more humble bathrooms and powder rooms, there is something there for all tastes and all budgets.

I would like to congratulate and thank all the designers who entered the awards – not just the winners. To the judges I say; having had the privilege of seeing all the beautiful projects that were entered into this year’s awards, I can appreciate the tough decisions you had to make to whittle down over 80 projects to these fi nal winners. Great job all around!

Industrial revelation

This industrial kitchen calls for a double take. On first glance, the kitchen’s sleek grey walls and benchtop echo the modern Auckland home’s poured concrete exterior. But take a closer look and the ‘cement’ reveals itself to be something unexpected: 9mm-thick fibre cement board cladding painted with Resene paints and splattered with thousands upon thousands of flecks of coloured paint. What isn’t surprising is that this amazing special effect, worthy of a Hollywood movie set, was created by a professional artist Jeanine Oxenius. As one half of the duo behind furniture upcycling company Bye Bye Love, Jeanine is used to transformations. She and business partner Heike Rzehulek-Schmitt regularly change tired furniture into hand-painted works of art. But Jeanine’s ‘concrete’ kitchen and home are her biggest canvas yet.

“I’m an artist, so I know how to fake stuff – how to make it look a certain way. Nearly all the interior walls in my house are now ‘concrete’.”

To create the walls and benchtop, Jeanine first painted a basecoat of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Truffle over fibre cement boards. To create the layers of colour over the top, she used her fingers, sponges and a metal pot scrubber to flick and dab Resene Stack, Resene Double Stack, Resene All Black and Resene Haystack over the base colour.

“I did have a lot of fun doing it. But it does take a lot of time and energy to do a whole house! It was a big job but I absolutely love it. I basically treated my house like a huge work of art – it’s certainly the biggest I’ve ever done!” says Jeanine.

IN JEANINE’S WORDS

What’s your favourite part of your kitchen?

Jeanine Oxenius: The kitchen bench is my favourite part but I hate my black sink because it is impossible to keep clean (but it looks great).

What’s your cooking style?

Jeanine Oxenius: We love the Thai and Italian cooking style. We are ‘mostlyterians’ (vegetarians who eat meat at times) and many delicious vegetables have lost their lives on my favourite bench. Our favourite dish to cook is pad thai with crispy tofu.

What recipe are you most eager to cook from this issue of dish?

Jeanine Oxenius: The Lots of Winter Greens and Almond Pesto with Pasta (page 118) sounds divine!

WORKING THE ANGLES

When you have an architect for a client, there’s no doubt about it – you have to bring your A-game. Stylehouse Design did precisely that, working collaboratively on the design of this incredible wine room, a crowning jewel in a comprehensive home renovation project.

While the owner sought to acknowledge the original home’s 1970s vibe in the main areas, the wine room was a di fferent proposition. This space had to be something special in more ways than one. To begin with, complementing the adjacent “winter zone” deck, a prime entertaining space that enjoyed a strong visual connection with the step-down wine room thanks to a large picture window, was a priority.

It also needed to have a luxurious feel and display the owner’s impressive collection in a manner be fi tting the finest wine cellar. From a practical perspective, abundant storage was essential, enabling the owner to expand the collection over time. The storage solutions had to accommodate a variety of bottle sizes and provide display space for special vintages.

The right lighting was important, too. The owner wanted it to have impact yet maintain a minimal profi le. Custom cabinetry with strip lighting provided the answer, with Stylehouse Design working every angle to deliver meticulously finished cabinetry and detailing that personalises – and futureproofs – the space.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

A very specific brief drove this project, with the homeowner wanting a special room that celebrated the fi ne wine they had been collecting for years.

solution

Custom cabinetry paid proper respect to the much-loved wine collection, while sufficient storage accounted for varying bottle sizes and ensured functionality. A ‘special something’ was added through the use of a bold natural stone, giving the space the air of sophistication the owners wanted.

European oak, in the form of VidaSpace Natural Allegro Brushed Veneer with a Blackwash fi nish, was the main material employed, imbuing the space with a dark and moody ambience, and acting as the perfect foil to the rich colouring and dramatic patterning of the stone chosen by the architect-owner.

Every element was painstakingly considered, from the Domus Line side-emitting LED strip lighting that’s ideal for highlighting design features to the custom Classico wine racks and the bold angles interwoven into the shelving’s design. Together they deliver a bespoke space the envy of any wine connoisseur.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS 17 PROJECT

MINIMALIST DREAM

The SpaceCraft Joinery kitchen project is a stunning creation by renowned designer Nathan Wundersitz that flawlessly combines functionality and aesthetics. Utilising Austaron’s exquisite Staron Solid Surfaces, this kitchen resolves into a modern and streamlined workspace with vibrant, cheerful accents and e ffi cient functionality.

In this project, the designer deliberately steered away from a harsh surface like stone and instead sought a softer feel. Staron came to the rescue, providing the perfect solution with its soft-edge detail, beautifully complementing the feature notch-out handle detail. The Sanded Dover benchtop, with its subtle fl eck and soft neutral hues, e ffortlessly harmonises with the joinery colour palette and newly polished concrete fl oors, creating an inviting ambience.

18 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

To achieve a minimalist design that would not suffer in function or feel sterile and cold.

solution

The integration of functionality and aesthetics was achieved with the use of Staron Solid Surface in Sanded Dover. The integrated sink with drainer grooves offers a streamlined, seamless surface that serves as an efficient workspace.

One of the standout features of this SpaceCraft Joinery kitchen project is the seamlessly integrated Staron moulded sink, accompanied by fi ve right-hand drainer grooves within the benchtop. This functional element not only enhances the overall design, but also ensures easy maintenance and a clutter-free workspace.

To elevate the luxurious feel of the Staron surfaces, the designer carefully selected elegant appliances from prominent brands such as Bosch and Samsung. These topof-the-line appliances seamlessly integrate into the kitchen’s aesthetic, adding to its overall sophistication and practicality.

The SpaceCraft Joinery kitchen project by designer Nathan Wundersitz showcases the remarkable capabilities of Austaron’s Staron Solid Surfaces. With its clean minimalist look and sink integration with drainer grooves, this kitchen combines functionality with a softer feel, making it a truly exceptional space. The carefully chosen Staron Sanded Dover benchtop, along with the exquisite appliances, further enhances the luxurious and inviting atmosphere of this extraordinary kitchen design.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS 19 PROJECT

A UNIQUE FAMILY KITCHEN

design designmarked kitchens build beaver kitchens

Wanting to create the right mood for this showroom, the Designmarked Kitchens team chose to follow the tenets of the Danish design aesthetic known as Hygge. They captured a cosy and comfortable vibe using natural timbers, matt finishes, leathered marble, sisal carpet and line voile drapes. Combined, this material palette cocooned the room and gave it the earthy, textural feel that makes any kitchen the heart of the home.

The starting point for this design was the timeless beauty of natural stone, with its organic movement juxtaposed with an understated feature light. As this is a showroom, an absence of sunlight allowed the designers to control the lighting, and therefore the mood of the space. Layered illumination and obvious shadow lines helped to achieve the cosy theme of this modern rustic kitchen.

20 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

While a colour palette of earth tones was selected, a lacquered fi nish on some features helped to deepen hues and provide additional layers of complexity. Adding supplementary texture to the design was the choice of Shung Shoi Ban timber panels for the overhead cabinetry. Remotely operated, these motorised cupboard doors allow storage access with minimum fuss.

Of course, storage solutions are paramount for any welldesigned family kitchen and this one does not disappoint. The Blum LEGRABOX drawers and SPACE TOWER pantry provide plenty of functional storage that is easily accessible and ergonomic while adhering to high-quality standards and visual appeal.

Combining practical applications with the hygge brief has resulted in a homey kitchen that amply demonstrates great design aesthetics and functional innovation in a harmonious environment.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

Ensuring this design conveyed the right emotion was an important aspect of the development of this showroom kitchen.

solution

A conscious choice to use multiple organic materials along with an earthy colour palette went a long way to achieving the desired sense of natural comfort throughout this kitchen, seamlessly combined with functionality that didn’t detract from the overall vibe.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS 21 PROJECT

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

Aiming for a high-contrast kitchen design that allowed the inhabitants to take advantage of the view was the main consideration undertaken on this new build.

solution

Centreing the kitchen island in the design ensured the cooking zone stayed in line with the vistas outdoors, while the addition of windows in the scullery afforded the same considerations in the work zone.

MAXIMUM IMPACT

design michelle mcanulty (beaver kitchens) build beaver kitchens

This new home enjoys an idyllic location in Matata, a seaside town on the North Island’s Bay of Plenty, and a kitchen that offers an amazing view out over the plains towards the water. Preserving this incredible vista was a priority, so while the owners wanted a high-impact kitchen, they didn’t want it to distract from the beauty of the natural landscape.

They sought a clean, uncluttered design, one with a strong architectural feel to complement the striking lines of the raked ceiling that soars above and anchors the kitchen in the light and airy open-plan living space.

Designed with entertaining in mind, the kitchen features double ovens, a large hob and a wine fridge. The expansive island matches the width of the kitchen cabinetry that runs along the back wall, providing ample space where friends and family can gather.

22 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

The owners wanted a clutter-free kitchen, so the scullery – blessed with a view-capturing window – plays a critical supporting role. All items of food are stored in the scullery, along with the small appliances. This space is also home to the kettle and all the requisite tea- and coffeemaking accoutrements.

At the owner’s request, much of the storage in the scullery is formed by open shelving and drawers. This quick-access style ensures greater e ffi ciency when working in the scullery, as well as some e ffective display space.

Both kitchen and scullery feature a black-and-white colour palette, delivering the high visual impact the owners craved. This is tempered by the considered use of wood tones that warm the spaces and reference the coastal location.

The kitchen cabinetry features soft-to-the-touch, mattfinish Laminex Acrylic in a deep, dark colour – Pitch Black. The benchtops and splashback are of polished TrendStone Quartz. The colour is Cala Eleganza, a soft white through which pale-grey veins run, giving the look of marble. Handstained American oak slats on the front of the island inject some softer, natural hues that pick up on the wood-effect Colombia Pine Ultimo LL luxury vinyl plank fl ooring.

In the scullery, the matt- finish Laminex Acrylic Meringue cabinetry ushers in a wash of warm white, crisply capped by the Absolute White TrendStone benchtops. The splashback of Ocean Black Matt subway tiles sits in stark yet stylish contrast, while the Laminex Woodgrain Shade open shelving continues the use of black.

The end result is a modern entertainer’s kitchen, supported by a stunning scullery, which takes centre stage in the open-plan living zone yet happily allows the outside view to share the limelight.

Both kitchen and scullery feature a black-and-white colour palette, delivering the high visual impact the owners craved

A CULINARY HAVEN

design

When the homeowner approached the design team for a renovation, she had a clear idea of what she wanted – a functional, streamlined and inviting culinary space. Due to her love of cooking and baking, her new kitchen needed to be a haven in which she could escape from the real world and spend time doing what she enjoyed.

While this home’s original kitchen felt a little disjointed and mismatched, there were some aspects – such as the suspended steel shelf and dark-veined benchtops – that complemented the home’s New York loft aesthetic beautifully. These were retained and re fined during the renovation, without interrupting the existing footprint.

The kitchen’s cooking zone was relocated during the project. Its new placement near the window facilitates plenty of natural light, as well as lots of prep space and easy access to guests sitting at the island bench when entertaining.

The original tiled splashback didn’t quite suit the new kitchen design, so the tiles, adhesive and grout were carefully removed in a way that allowed the brickwork beneath to be showcased. While this was tricky to achieve, the team’s careful work paid off as the brick splashback is a beautiful homage to NYC’s industrial-chic loft designs.

The rich, warm timber you see on the kitchen’s cabinetry was chosen speci fi cally to harmonise with the Dekton benchtop surfaces. As an added bonus, it complements the exposed brickwork and also creates an aesthetic link to the outdoor area just beyond.

The homeowner is thrilled with her new kitchen and it’s easy to see why. This space is now the heart of the home and will be the site of many culinary experiments and wonderful meals shared with loved ones for years to come.

Retaining original architectural elements in the renovation of this kitchen was of prime importance to the main chef in this household.

The homeowners wanted a smart, elegant kitchen, something different, with warm tones and dramatic natural stone.

Extending the kitchen’s oak panelling over the stairway wall on the right, as well as into the window joinery on the left, plus the use of a secret door entry into the scullery, has given the kitchen a seamless, expansive and luxurious look. When the scullery secret door is open, the door fits perfectly within the oak lined entry. Concealed hinges and magnets hold the door either in its open or closed position, while the vertical

oak handles cleverly slot into the side of the drink’s cabinet, allowing the door to reveal the full width of the opening. A drinks fridge, pull out drawers for glasses, smoky glass shelving, LED lighting and a full height smoky mirror splashback elevates the entertaining experience, while the stone benchtop subtly keeps the bar connected to the kitchen aesthetic. The large, bold, floating stone boxed island is certainly something different. The seating table pushes out into the living room, adequately filling the space, while remaining elegant within the scale of this large living room.

A stunning and memorable design that shows competence and design restraint. This is a very striking kitchen. The stone works very well with the timber, a lot of consideration has gone into the palette. The earthy colour scheme has been absolutely nailed. The minimal colours, textures, and the lightness of the design within such a big, heavy space is so well thought out. The magnificent scullery is equally as good as the kitchen, which is a joy to see. The handle detail on the tall panels is beautiful. Perfect, smart, well executed spatial design. This is quality of design.

This kitchen renovation, within a 2004 Mediterranean-style home, was created for a professional couple who desired a calm, luxurious and relaxing atmosphere.

The new kitchen needed multiple spaces because both clients cook, and the coffee machine is frequently used so it needed a special area. As the couple are regular entertainers, a seating area with barstools for many guests was a must to ensure relaxation and to enjoy the space without the need to use the formal dining room. The materials selected had to be suitable to withstand the homeowner’s

love of cooking. The beautiful ceiling was already present in the home and bringing it through the extension ensured the spaces aligned and didn’t feel like an addition. To detail drawings for the cantilever benchtop, an engineer was enlisted as introducing legs would take away from the beauty of the marble breakfast bar.

Gee, this is a great job. This is a renovation that uplifts the usability of the existing home. The result is highly functional and truly belongs as if it has always been there. The designer has great vision to be able to see this design within the previous, existing, footprint. The final kitchen incorporates a great use of the materials and fits with the home, with its beautiful ceiling details and skyline. The detailing that you can see from a cabinet making and joinery perspective showcases quality products, texture, and depth.

The homeowner can best be described as a combination of Nigella Lawson and Mary Berry. She wanted a generous-sized kitchen with enough capacity to nourish her busy household, plus feed extended family and friends. The extension of her farmhouse involved demolishing its entire eastern half and doubling the original area. The wish list included a very specific and detailed scullery layout, four distinct areas for specific tasks, a large island workspace and a blue and white colour scheme with a country look. Part-way through the design process, the homeowner decided that she wanted a teppanyaki

hot plate. Having dismissed all domestic options as too small, she purchased a commercial ‘burger-joint style’ hot plate. This decision meant she now needed a commercial rangehood capable of removing fumes from up to 12 simultaneously sizzling steaks. Embracing this change, more elements of stainless steel were added to some of the benchtops and the same steel was specified for the fridge fronts. To regain some balance of ‘country’, tongue-and-groove panelling was used on the walls and the use of macrocarpa timber in the scullery helps to add warmth.

This design exudes confidence from the designer. The designer had to pivot with the change of brief and executed it to the highest of standards. An amazing kitchen with an incredible pantry. You just want to go there and immerse yourself with a glass of wine. The commercial elements and appliances within a residential setting have been integrated intelligently. The designer has more than met the brief. This space tells a story.

This kitchen is located in a new, architectural, off the grid, 100 square metre home.

The brief was to keep within budget but allow for bespoke fittings. The wish list included a robust, easy to maintain kitchen with ample storage. Being off the grid, longevity of materials was key alongside using products that could withstand the sun. A gas hob to allow for exceptional weather conditions was critical, as was a large pantry for food storage in case of being snowed in. The homeowner preferred an industrial feel, but also craved a sanctuary to

escape from the busy world. Using a laminate finish for cabinetry meant it could withstand the heat of sun without fading and be easy to clean in the dusty environment. The orbital stainless benches provide easy maintenance and add the ruggedness sought. The natural quartzite island top has a beautiful tactile touch in the honed finish. The discovery of the backsplash tile was the perfect jewel in the crown, reflecting the changing light so beautifully while enhancing harmony of tones. The Tom Dixon Melt pendant adds a gorgeous pop of the unexpected.

THE JUDGE’S SAID

What’s not to love about this cabin kitchen. It is stunning and it just works beautifully within the rocky South Island location. This kitchen is tailored perfectly for its environment. All the different materials are very balanced and well considered. The colour scheme is all within the same lovely tone and the materials fit just right with the cabin vibe. The light adds wow factor. From a budget point of view, the location would have created issues in terms of transport and the designer is to be commended for overcoming this within budget constraints.

RABBITTE JOINERY

A 70s original kitchen, with copper rangehood and Formica tops, was looking tired and dark.

In need of a renovation, the brief was for the kitchen to be in keeping with the home, black and white, good storage, a space for appliances to be hidden away and for the design to include a seating area. Colours were important to the homeowners and initially a black and white theme was desired, but as the process continued a gunmetal colour was selected to soften the joinery. The island needed to have a seating area,

so Trudi played with the depth of the benchtop, and the use of a metal leg, to help support the island top with a large overhang. The splashback was the one extravagance in this kitchen and super white quartzite was chosen for its movement and colours, and to add a little wow.

There are some nice, refined details in this kitchen that has been built on a budget. The blades down the back of the island, the lovely colour scheme and the customised handles all combine to create a fantastic small kitchen with special details.

The brief was for a family bathroom with an air of sophisticated elegance, one that encourages relaxation.

The bathroom needed to facilitate a growing family, with space for the morning routine. It also required a classic approach to tie in with the traditional architecture of the 1910 era home. The team at Detail by Davinia Sutton adjusted the bathroom into multifunctional zones, with each zone providing privacy to ensure the space could be used by more than one child at a time. The modern vanity, with negative detail handles and engineered stone vanity top, provides a stunning impact, while the dual vanity basins

allow ease of preparation for the family. Hidden storage is provided above the vanity basins and behind the custom mirrors. The free-standing back to wall bath plays on classic, simple forms. Privacy of the toilet was created with the inclusion of a three-quarter height wall, allowing for modesty without enclosure and ensuring the bathroom retains a sense of spaciousness. Limiting the design materials and hues creates a traditional and refined atmosphere, while the crispness of the matte grey tone tile base contrasted with the use of polished white marble porcelain floor tiles plays on a modern approach to this bathroom space.

The materials selected on this bathroom are of absolute quality. The porcelain large scale tile contrasting with the dark and light achieves a high-end bathroom aesthetic. The neutral colour makes it look very sophisticated. The division for the shower and the toilet provides a very private space while also being functional with the two basins in the front. The traditional windows represent the age of the house in a highly successful way. The space is subtle, contemporary, and luxe and it works well with the architecture of the home.

Exuding the elegance and sophistication of an exclusive hotel, this master ensuite is a piece of art and a tranquil sanctuary for the homeowners to enjoy.

To celebrate the landscape, a textured palette, subtle lighting, colour and attention to detail have been utilised. The design brief was to tailor a spacious, functional and luxurious space which includes a freestanding bath, double vanity, mirrors, a walk-in glass-doored shower, separate toilet and sufficient venting. It also needed to flow into the walk-in robe and master bedroom. A bold collaboration sees a bespoke vanity with Nero Ingo Fenix

pared with an Iron Frost Neolith mitred benchtop and subtly textured ripple tiles to contrast with large, grey porcelain tiles. The exquisite tiles make the perfect backdrop to the freestanding belle Vessel bath with its matt black bath spout. Black shutters, strategically installed prior to the plumbed bath, give privacy while also the ability to soak in the view. The carefully designed tile layout was achieved with close collaboration from designer and artisan to ensure the ripple tiles, mitred edges and larger format Ashima tiles all flowed seamlessly.

The multiple zones within the one bathroom have been executed well to create a highly functional space for the clients. The choice of tiling is exquisite, as is the incredibly cool and ultra slim vanity top. The complexity of the vanity really raises the level of luxe in this space. The bath placement enables great viewing out of the window, and the lines of the horizontal shutters tie in beautifully with the linear tile choice. The bespoke mirror cabinets are a great touch. Lots of texture and stunning dark accents. Well done.

The owners of this home are recent empty nesters, with grown-up daughters now living overseas. Their home had leaking issues, so they decided to completely rebuild it.

Morgan Cronin of Cronin Kitchens was engaged early on in the process to design the kitchen, scullery and laundry.

The client wanted a smart, elegant room with warm tones and dramatic natural stone – something “di fferent” yet highly functional. The client’s wish list included seating for fi ve at the kitchen island and a drinks cabinet for entertaining, as well as a hidden scullery. The resulting kitchen is a sleek yet warm space that pushes out into the living area in an invitation to mingle.

Cleverly concealed within the wall of full-height joinery seamlessly aligned with the windows and stairway, the purposeful scullery is out fi tted in the same material palette as the main kitchen, creating design continuity and leaving the large island to serve as the centrepiece of the main kitchen. A mammoth plinth of Essential Grey honed marble forms the extensive island, from which juts a dining extension of rich timber. O ffering plenty of prep room as well as connected seating for entertaining and casual dining, the immense island is a bold statement piece with a high degree of functionality.

Inset into the wall of cabinetry de fining the kitchen space is a cook nook. Housing an induction cooktop and inbuilt rangehood, this recessed hub is lined with the same warm stone used on the island and surrounded by LED task lighting. Tucked behind another of the doors forming the back wall of the kitchen is the new dry bar. Housing glass shelves, a mirrored back and matching stone counter, the bar area is a great spot to get the party started.

Desirous of an “unreserved design” for their master ensuite, these clients enlisted the aid of Davinia Sutton of Detail by Davinia to create an indulgent space that would complement the contemporary architecture of their home.

Strong vertical and horizontal lines were used for visual impact, with natural stone and a mix of textures employed to provide a calm and serene ambience in this private sanctuary. The design re fl ects a contemporary flavour, achieved with a minimal palette, while the layout forms a practical spatial fl ow.

No bath exists in the space as the home features an exterior spa, making room for a large dual shower zone that is the perfect place to relax and restore. Contemporary bathroom fi ttings and fi xtures were chosen to stand the test of time, while still ensuring the sense of luxury the owners desired.

Deliberately cantilevered from wall to wall and across the window, this feature enhances the sense of spaciousness and clean lines showcased throughout the design. A mitred vertical timber cabinet to the left of the basins provides ample storage for bathroom necessities and brings in an additional element of warmth.

Covered from fl oor to ceiling, the natural stone tiles used are a balanced accompaniment to the stone forming the vanity, giving the ensuite plenty of texture and movement with a natural harmony that soothes the senses. ROBIN HOLTHUSEN

Kakapo Joinery

AWARDS

An intriguing combination of elegant and earthy, this captivating kitchen by Robin Holthusen of Kakapo Joinery is modern and sophisticated, with an undeniable “natural” feel. Using the client’s choice of ceiling material and unique dining pendants as his starting point, Robin went with a warm and heavily textured material palette to give these deserving homeowners the kitchen of their dreams.

Incorporating good bench space, storage and multiple seating areas were all considerations from the get go. The use of natural materials enhanced the sense of bringing the outside in, while a love of entertaining was also considered in the fi nal design.

Surrounded by tall trees, green fi elds and views of the ocean, the kitchen was required to have a di fferent point of view from as many angles as possible. It was a tall and awkward space, with non-standard angles, so determining the layout for this new kitchen was a challenge.

Robin utilised thick bamboo pillars to divide the area into two rooms, creating a main kitchen and scullery in the process. The stately yet sleek pillars add height and dimension and allow for a secret door to the scullery that keeps clutter hidden behind tall cabinets. A skylight over the scullery keeps this enclosed room bright and airy, despite the dark cabinetry.

Softening the straight lines of the joinery was achieved with the introduction of some sinuous curves, the most signi fi cant of which can be found on the custom leafshaped island. Topped by black and gold granite, this unique unit eases the traffi c fl ow through the space and makes for a unique statement piece.

MY Designs

Going out on a high, Margaret Young is retiring after an extremely satisfying career dedicated to art and interior design. After completing her Interior Design Certi fi cation in 1998 at Open Polytechnic, Margaret’s passion for design grew with dyeing fabric and hand painting sweatshirts and selling them on eBay. In 2005, everything changed when Margaret had her kitchen designed by Lloyds Joinery.

“I started my career on the other side, as a client. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience working with the team at Lloyds Joinery when they designed and created my kitchen. Soon after, Lloyd advertised for a designer and I jumped at the chance. Fast forward to 2014 and I was given the opportunity to take over their client list and launch my own business. That is when Margaret Young Designs was born,” she says.

Entering the NKBA awards for the last time in 2023, with four beautiful designs, Margaret says it is her swansong to the industry she loves.

“All of my entries into the awards are kitchens I have completed over the last seven years. They are projects that I am particularly proud of. Each one is unique and involves personalities with a bit of an interesting backstory, including a church renovation and a farmhouse with a twist,” she says.

Highlights have been the opportunity to travel overseas to visit the BLUM factory in Austria, and two visits to Milan to attend the Eurocucina Kitchen Expo.

Not quite ready to say a final goodbye, Margaret says she will be retaining her membership to NKBA, attending conferences and hoping to help with the industry where needed.

“I have more time on my hands to attend Chapter meetings, give back to the industry and NKBA, offer advice and stay active,” shares Margaret.

DESIGNER CRAIG BETTRIDGE & DAVINIA SUTTON

By Davinia Sutton

With an Insta-worthy view and plenty of room to move, this space is one bathing haven I’d never want to leave. A vast area open to the master suite, the room’s views are accessed through a cathedral-like wall of glass overlooking the nearby harbour.

Built as a sanctuary for its owners, the calm and serene ambience was achieved by designers Craig Bettridge and Davinia Sutton. O ffering clean lines and minimalist features, the private bathing pavilion encompasses a long double-basin vanity, a large shower zone and a toilet that is hidden from view upon entry.

Re fl ecting the natural surrounds of the home, the material palette of this design echoes both coastal and bushland elements in texture and colour. A freestanding concrete bath resides in front of the fl oor-to-ceiling glass wall, which can be partially opened to provide an indooroutdoor ambience. In full view of the master bedroom, the bath’s placement makes it a statement piece to the freely accessible space.

Behind the solid surface double vanity sits Pannonia Grun granite with a sandblasted and brushed e ffect, cladding the top half of the back wall and running directly into the shower. A rain showerhead in the open shower zone ensures a luxury bathing experience that remains open to the bushland views.

White porcelain tiles cover the rest of the wall space, allowing the granite to make a statement while enhancing the casual modern aesthetic. Timber-veneer cabinetry runs below the vanity, providing plenty of convenient storage.

Dark hued basalt-like porcelain fl oor tiles ground the entire space, adding a textural, layered feel to the room that integrates harmoniously with the natural landscape surrounding this dynamic passive house.

Cube Dentro

The busy couple in this abode required a kitchen to indulge their passion for hosting family, friends and overseas guests. With children coming and going, the space needed to ebb and fl ow to suit di fferent timetables, along with ample storage to suit their lifestyle.

High priority was given to a functional space that would support the homeowner’s talent for baking, with large bench spaces and easy access to appliances and kitchenware the top priority. As the kitchen would be used regularly for entertaining, there also needed to be plenty of convenient storage so everything could be tucked out of sight when not in use.

AWARDS CATEGORY WINNER DNKBA KITCHEN DESIGN (BRONZE)
60 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Working with an understanding of the client’s needs, designer Jordana Gurney of Cube Dentro created a countertop seating arrangement that allows guests and family to gather for drinks and casual dining experiences. Though the layout of the space was orientated to take advantage of the country vistas outside, the interior design palette was consciously monochromatic and pared-back. As part of a larger home renovation, the colour scheme and material palette were shrewdly chosen to ensure design cohesion throughout the entire interior.

In opening up walls in the space, Jordana created a new footprint for the kitchen that felt open but with a better functionality, while fi lling in the existing bulkhead helped to de fine the space from the wider room and solidify its edges.

Luxury additions such as a built-in wine fridge and integrated appliances contribute to the streamlined quality of the design, with bespoke vertical timber panelling adding a textural quality that solidi fi es the restaurant-esque ambience with a strong design aesthetic.

JENNY HOLMES

Designmarked Kitchens

Designed for a middle-aged couple and their 21-year old twins, this mid-century inspired kitchen is used extensively by all family members, operating as the heart of the home.

The main cook is of German heritage, and has developed a love of traditional German baking. The client wanted to be sure the kitchen’s new design included an appropriate benchtop surface for rolling out dough that was set at an optimal height. Also included in the wish list was an abundance of storage, seating at the island, a display cabinet for showcasing family heirlooms and kitchen cabinetry that feels like furniture, all with a mid-century flair.

Designed by Jenny Holmes of Designmarked Kitchens, this kitchen got all of the above and more. Resplendent in rich timber joinery, this kitchen is a warm haven of style and functionality.

Borrowing space from the adjacent living area, Jenny designed a layout that would encourage social interaction while still giving the cook room to work. The large island was extended to its maximum length and width to provide ample prep space, as well as casual dining atop its highly durable Dekton surface. The island’s slender turned-timber legs elevate the unit, giving it a furniture-like feel, while the reeded-glass display case and steel shelves fi t with the overall decor of the house.

Full-height cabinetry and open shelving, along with surface-mounted and Gola-style handles, all combine to achieve the clean, simple lines reminiscent of the mid-century aesthetic. Middle Earth hand-glazed tiles in Black Rutile form the kitchen splashback, grounding the warmth of the timber cabinetry and contrasting dramatically against the white accents throughout to produce a contemporary space with a stylish, bygone-era air.

A bold statement in natural stone, this master ensuite is an alluring retreat that encompasses an overall modern approach to design. Cleverly crafted by designer Davinia Sutton, the bathroom re fl ects sharp, clean lines and bold forms.

Important to the client was the use of modern fi nishes with minimal fi xtures and fi ttings, along with separate zones that would a fford the users a little extra privacy. A walled-off water closet and private shower zone helped to achieve the desired e ffect and give this bathroom a contemporary outcome.

A large wall-hung custom vanity and splashback are the natural hero of this space. Bold and full of movement, the bespoke double-bowl vanity is formed from natural Namco stone in a honed and textured finish. Set beneath the vanity top is a long line of cabinetry of American white oak veneer, offering a light counterpoint to the dark stone and plenty of functional storage.

Custom black steel-framed mirrors and brushed nickel tapware are the perfect accompaniment to the space, offering a gentle sheen that doesn’t detract from the bold stone statement of the vanity. The stone is further utilised in the shower, forming one feature wall. A highlight window in this space also provides plenty of natural light and views of the ocean beyond, making it feel like you’re bathing in the sea. With a strong material palette that re fl ects the natural surrounds of the home’s location, the textural drama and strong form of this striking bathroom gives it an urban edge, while its muted colour selections provide the calm required to ensure it remains a bathing haven.

KIRA GRAY

Fyfe Kitchens

Sitting alongside a tidal inlet surrounded by native bush and farmland, this masonry home with schist accents was tired and in need of a makeover. Bringing in designer Kira Gray of Fyfe Kitchens, the new owners, a professional couple who regularly entertained, asked her to transform their home’s dated interior into a luxurious traditional retreat that exuded sophistication and elegance.

The existing U-shaped kitchen, positioned to the rear of a large open-plan living space, was encased in curved bulkheads and angled walls. Hidden in the corner of the house, it did not take advantage of the everchanging sea views and lacked functional storage and fl ow. Opening up the layout and creating a scullery area that provided utility without being completely removed from the rest of the kitchen, Fyfe Kitchens created a much more functional work space for the owners.

2023 70 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Choosing a timeless, traditional aesthetic, which blends soft, warm colours that are a re fl ection the home’s earthy exterior, the new kitchen showcases a large central island that provides plenty of prep space and storage. De fi ning the edge of the kitchen, the island straddles the line between the living and kitchen spaces to allow access to the views on all sides.

Directly behind the island sits the cook hub, which feeds into the new open scullery area. The hub is surrounded by contrasting dark timber-look cabinetry inset with glass, creating an intriguing display area that houses the family’s favourite treasures.

As per the family’s request for a dining zone incorporated into the kitchen space, a tufted L-shaped banquette is built on the other side of the scullery. Forming a nook in the light- filled space, this intimate dining space is a well-loved area for everyone in the house and idyllic for family gatherings.

Set on a rural property and lived in by three generations of the family, this country home resonates charm. Catering to a busy household, the home’s kitchen would often be in use by three or more people at any one time preparing meals for family get-togethers, baking, and even preserving fruit from their own orchard.

In order to best serve the family’s functional needs, a bigger oven and fridge were in order, along with more bench space for prep and small appliances.

Calling in designer Lynsie Walsh-McDonnell of Fyfe Kitchens, the owners requested an updated cooking zone that would make their everyday routine easier. Tackling the space issue first, Fyfe Kitchens extended the existing kitchen into the next room. Previously offi ce space, the added square footage was most welcome and assisted with a more functional layout for the new design. A new offi ce space was created behind the barn door.

72 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Reminiscent of an English-style country house, the new kitchen features Shaker-style doors in a soft green/grey hue. An integrated fridge enhanced the added sense of space, while a freestanding range added to the country kitchen vibe.

An open scullery area tucked into the old offi ce space features plenty of prep room, along with open shelving that allows storage for jars, cups, plates and provisions to be on display, while small appliances are easily accommodated and handily within reach.

Light and bright with a relaxed vibe, this country kitchen is outlined by white, veined Dekton benchtops that are sure to stand up to regular family use for years to come. Small subway tiles in a darker green/grey shade than the cabinets form the room’s splashback, adding a dash of saturated colour and completing the contemporary country look.

Built in 2003, this two-bedroom Canadian-style cabin in the Makarora Valley is nestled into a forested landscape on the fringes of Mt Aspiring National Park. With sweeping views of Lake Wanaka and the Makarora River, its idyllic location is worthy of an organically inspired kitchen.

Con fined by a poor layout, outdated cabinetry and flawed utility, this tired old space was transformed by designer Hannah Withy of HM Design to capitalise on the stunning natural environment.

Enlarging the kitchen to encompass part of the original dining area was the first step to expanding the overall kitchen footprint. A large centre island clearly marks the prep area, while the benchtop overhang allows for stool seating for casual dining.

A combination of symmetrical and asymmetrical design elements adds texture and visual interest, drawing the eye through this intriguing space and cementing the rustic-chic cabin vibe.

Adding a splash of colour that helps the light and airy aesthetic connect to the incredible landscape outside, which is showcased through a plethora of windows, is a green fi sh-scale tile. The organic, glazed tile spans the entire back wall, surrounding the windows and rising to meet the timber ceiling in a seamless fl ow reminiscent of the rolling hills beyond the kitchen window.

CHRISTINE DAWSON Inspace

AWARDS CATEGORY WINNER BAY OF PLENTY CHAPTER RECOGNITION (BATHROOM)

Highly functional and equipped for entertaining was the name of the game for this home redesign. With a need to update the original traditional-style kitchen, the homeowners of the beachside dwelling called upon Christine Dawson of Inspace to bring their space up to today’s standards.

Pushing through into an adjacent bathroom and storage area, Christine developed a new kitchen layout that includes a scullery and laundry. The scullery has access to an outdoor herb garden and includes plenty of storage for platters, as these are used when catering for social occasions.

Separating the cooking zone from the dining room and family space, the front kitchen takes advantage of the breathtaking views of the local beach but still allows people seated at the bench to interact with the chef.

Dark-stained timber veneer cabinetry runs through all the spaces, providing design continuity. Lifting the richness of the joinery is a light leathered Michelangelo marble. Richly veined, this elegant natural stone also serves as the splashback and runs into the scullery area.

A drinks cabinet sits concealed behind fl oor-to-ceiling joinery to the right of the scullery entry. Lined with Cristallo Quarzite, which is backlit and set with glass shelving, this handy feature is a favourite with the homeowners, who love to entertain.

Further enhancing the home’s overhaul was Christine’s reimagining of the main bathroom ensuite. Updated to align with the style utilised throughout the rest of the house, including the kitchen, the newly renovated bathroom is now the relaxing retreat the homeowners longed for.

Adding storage to ensure better functionality and an uncluttered aesthetic was a primary goal. However, the highlight of the space is the beautiful view and natural light. Taking advantage of these bene fi ts, the new bathroom was tiled fl oor to ceiling in a neutral, earthy matt tile. A solid travertine double basin, custom-manufactured in Turkey, was installed along with a frameless glass shower enclosure that keeps the bathroom light and airy.

Matching the warmth of the kitchen, this simple yet elegant ensuite is the crowning touch on this home overhaul.

DESIGNER MELY XU

Jerry Kitchen & Bath Ltd

Designed for a photographer with a classic aesthetic, the homeowner wanted a timeless, elegant bungalow kitchen that re fl ected an open and spacious layout with plenty of counter space.

One of the main challenges of this project was maximising the available space while still creating an open and inviting environment. To overcome this challenge, Mely Xu of Jerry Kitchen & Bath opted for cabinetry with a simple profi le, a U-shaped layout, plenty of fl oor-to-ceiling storage units and an all-white colour scheme.

Plenty of windows along the external wall over the cooking hub and benchtop allow in natural light, enabling internal walls to house cabinetry and open shelving for storage. A breakfast bar with a rounded end breaks up the long lines of the space, offering a comfortable gathering spot for family and friends that doesn’t interfere with the room’s work fl ow.

A porcelain butler’s sink, traditional pro fi le rangehood and half-round timber cladding surrounding the kitchen peninsula add elegance and texture to the white-on-white theme of the space, underscoring the classic aesthetic while providing enough visual interest to keep it from being sterile. Brass tapware and hardware lends a little shine that makes this chic yet traditional design timeless.

MICHELLE GILLBANKS

Kitchens by Design

With a design brief that spanned two rooms, this traditional coastal home received a Hamptons-inspired overhaul across its kitchen and master bathroom. Ably undertaken by designer Michelle Gillbanks of Kitchens by Design, this new build sits on a cli ff top in Campbells Bay. With views overlooking the ocean and plenty of natural light pouring in, the kitchen is a tone-on-tone work of art that enhances rather than competes with the view.

Traditional panelled doors, glass-fronted display units and decorative posts make up the cabinetry in the open kitchen, all in a crisp, fresh white. The moulded joinery sits seamlessly with the dado panelling that circles the walls of the adjoining living zones, ensuring a completeness of design that fi lters across the space.

A scullery area for food preparation and storage continues the material palette and adds all the functionality needed of a modern kitchen, while the large island a ffords comfortable seating for three.

Continuing the coastal aesthetic into the bathroom, detailed joinery and posts, along with oversized architraves, emphasise the unique angles of the room. The white theme serves equally well in the bathroom as in the kitchen, emphasising the light and bright beachside vibe. A split-glass transom window over the two-person shower mimics the window placement throughout the house, and plantation shutters control the fl ood of light.

Open shelving proudly displays personal items, while a polished chrome finish on the hardware helps this room shine on more than one level. Demonstrating the same level of attention to detail as the kitchen, this abode’s overall design is ideally suited to its nautical location.

VELYADE KIRMACH

Mastercraft Kitchens Hobsonville

Working with an odd-shaped layout, including irregular angles, sloping ceilings and di fferent wall finishes, made the design process on this abode a delightful challenge for designer Valyade Kirmach of Mastercraft Kitchens Hobsonville.

Desiring a functional kitchen with plenty of storage that also re fl ected their lifestyle, was the check list the eager homeowners handed over. Because they enjoy natural elements, they also put in a request to preserve the timber wall finishes and the kauri fl ooring – guaranteeing the updated design would include plenty of natural ambiance.

To meet their limited budget, a cost-e ffective solution of Melteca Blackened Legno Woodgrain veneer was suggested for the cabinetry, much to the client’s delight. A Feast Watson

black wax finish was then applied to the cabinet to darken the colour and create greater depth.

Creating contrast, lighter timber benchtops, made by the client, were installed across all the counters, allowing the homeowner to place his personal mark on the room and showcase his DIY skills. Another of his creations is the reclaimed timber shelfs he made that were set within stylish black steel frames to hang over the sink and the coffee bar, providing attractive and functional display storage.

Black and white hexagon tiles created a simple colour way of geometric texture on the room’s backsplashes, helping to keep the space neutral and let the timber elements sing. Throw in some decorative elements like seagrass baskets and clay bead chandeliers and you’ve got a sophisticated yet rustic design that suits its owners down to the ground.

KATE CARTER

Kate Carter Interior Design

In on the ground fl oor, designer Kate Carter worked through this renovation from design to construction. Built for a single mum with three kids, the remodelled room was created as a multifunctional zone for a busy family.

Used from morning to night by all members of the family, the updated zone required more bench space, better storage, a dedicated pantry, a place to stash benchtop appliances, new fl ooring, two ovens, and a material palette that would withstand wear and tear from growing kids, all within a limited budget.

A small layout change that involved shifting an internal door solved the dilemma of how to fi t in more cabinetry and functional storage. A wall of fl oor-to-ceiling soft grey cabinetry provides plenty of places to tuck away items and keep the kitchen clutter-free. Taking all cabinetry to the ceiling proved handy for extending storage options, especially for rarely-used items.

A large island answered the call for more bench space and also provided additional seating, allowing the family to cook, do homework, or just gather together at the same time. Open shelving tucked on one end of the island also created display space or storage for cookbooks.

As a lover of colour, the homeowner wanted a splash of personality that re fl ected her inner chef. Kate chose a pretty hue of soft pink for the backsplash tile, a timeless solution that re fl ected the era of the home but wasn’t so bold as to date quickly. Design elements such as the scalloping on the island and rangehood add texture, while also re fl ecting the home’s original architecture, resulting in a fun yet functional modern kitchen.

JES GORDON

Mastercraft Kitchens Bay of Plenty

In a dwelling on a street of standout residences, this showcase- worthy kitchen, designed by Jes Gordon of Mastercraft Kitchens Bay of Plenty, is a shining jewel. Given a lot of leeway by the client, Jes created a family kitchen that makes a statement that matches the grandeur of the dwelling.

The planned kitchen featured a small space with a walk-in pantry that did not do the large area with highpitched ceilings any favours. Not only did it lack presence, it was also not very practical. An immediate concern for the layout was the placement of the staircase and the dramatically angled roofl ine. This was overcome by Jes with the inclusion of an integrated downdraft for the hob and a dedicated bar space. These clever design elements helped produce some interesting angles and heights that served to emphasise the soaring ceiling heights within the room.

2023 88 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Food storage was achieved by incorporating two Häfele Tandem pantries framing the fridge, eliminating the need for a walk-in area and allowing the designer to open up the room. This clean-lined aesthetic is carried through the cooking zone with an inset cooktop and simple open shelving in contrasting oak timber set against clean white solid-surface counters and splashback.

A dash of on-trend green is brought in through the use of Melteca Green Slate cabinetry, off set with natural timber to create a warm and textural aesthetic. An island of the same soft green cabinetry is topped with an oak slab that graces the space with added natural warmth. The island’s generous proportions make entertaining a breeze and give families plenty of room to gather together, no matter their stage of life.

With a wish list that included space to enjoy wine while the chef produces gourmet meals, easy to clean and free of clutter, room for entertaining, an in-island beverage fridge, along with gas and induction cooktops, it’s no wonder Matarangi Retreat is an entertainer’s dream.

Built as a home away from home that would allow its owners to enjoy the coastal delights of the location, this new build is set to become the retirement home of its middle-aged owners. As such, a functional layout and quality material choices were paramount to the kitchen’s construction, as was a modern, warm and light-colour palette.

Touches of honeyed timber in the kitchen island and adjoining dining space heat up the otherwise all-white colour scheme. Vertical lines achieved with scored cabinetry and a finger-tile splashback provide texture that adds an appealing tactility. Three skylights sitting over the work zone allow in plenty of natural sunlight and spotlight the large expanse of the central kitchen island.

Hidden behind a door to the right of the cooking hub, a spacious scullery boasts plenty of practical open-shelf storage along with additional appliances, including a second dishwasher and wine fridge. A more economical choice of materials was utilised in the scullery to keep the project on budget while still achieving maximum functionality. A double hob and plenty of working space either side ensure the cooking niche is well appointed, leaving plenty of space for prep or entertaining on the island.

Characterised by a modern aesthetic that still respects the Georgian architecture re fl ected in the abode’s history, this entertainer’s kitchen was created with a family-friendly open plan in mind, providing plenty of natural light and clear sightlines to the outdoors.

Wanting to make the kitchen once more the heart of the home, designer Davinia Sutton repositioned the layout to overcome the original dated and cramped fl oorplan. A statement splashback of Agate Azul porcelain tile sets the tone for this modern industrial-style kitchen. Built for a new architecturally designed off-grid 100sqm dwelling, the kitchen design maximises the view and light fl ow.

A counterpoint to the abundant nature beyond the many full-length glass sliding doors, the kitchen has a monochromatic scheme that offers plenty of texture. Bespoke fi ttings speak to the quality of the build, with a robust material palette implemented in order to ensure the owners wouldn’t spend valuable outdoor time maintaining the kitchen.

A hardy laminate with a concrete-like finish means the cabinetry will withstand the heat of full sun without fading, while the stainless-steel benchtop with orbital fi nish adds a rugged edge that is incredibly low maintenance. Natural quartzite stone caps the kitchen island and waterfalls down one end, forming a plinth that provides plenty of work space and a convenient nook for seating. The Dixon Melt pendant suspended over the island is a luxurious reminder that off-grid doesn’t have to mean rustic.

Given the extreme environment of the home’s location, ample storage in case the owners get snowed in was a must, as was a gas hob. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry runs down one side of the adjoining scullery, taking care of any space concerns, while an additional prep bench on the opposite wall helps the owners keep clutter out of sight.

AWARDS CATEGORY WINNER DESIGNER OF THE YEAR

As avid entertainers and keen cooks, the homeowners of this family abode wanted an open design that re fl ected the provincial-style architecture of their home and included views out to the pottager garden and farm outside their doors.

Turning the previous dark and cold space into a light and bright haven was achieved by designer Davinia Sutton. By updating the existing layout and reimagining the work fl ow created, Davinia was able to retain the easy transition from the main living zones to the kitchen, as well as the strong connection to the outdoors.

Laid out in a communal L-shaped format, the central island forms the hub around which everyone gathers. Large windows not only fl ood the space with natural light but also serve to reinforce the rooms connection to the landscape outside, creating a vibrant and fresh space for everyday family life.

The central cooking zone features a custom-made timberclad rangehood, adding a touch of the traditional through the wood grain, and ties it to the cladding on the front of the kitchen island. An open doorway aids easy passage into the adjacent pantry zone, which houses additional appliances and shares the same traditional detailing. A co ffee nook parallel to the end of the island offers extra storage and open shelving for display.

To re fl ect the age and detail of the home’s architecture, a modern interpretation of traditional cabinetry style with a fine framed door was used. A classic white palette gives the cabinetry a timeless quality, while accents from hardware in smoky bronze and matt black add a contemporary edge that seals the modern provincial aesthetic. Neolith Hymalayan Crystal surfaces cap off the design. Featured across the benchtops in a solid 80mm thickness, it is also run up the walls to form the splashback.

With understated lighting illuminating the bench at night and plenty of natural light fi ltering in during the day, this kitchen is a showpiece with eye-catching detail and undisputable functionality.

For a busy young family of four, achieving a simple and convenient layout with a cosy and relaxing aesthetic offers an ease of living that is highly desirable. The hub of any home, this kitchen was not just cooking central, but also the location for kids to do homework, an entertainment zone, and the family gathering spot.

Starting with a new build meant the kitchen layout was a blank slate, with the kitchen island becoming the star attraction and most important focus right from the start. Constructed along “simple” lines, the large rectangular island boasts a solid block appearance crafted from Taj Mahal-honed quartzite. A cantilevered overhang supports breakfast bar seating, giving the homeowners the work/ play space they needed.

Second to the island is a walk-in pantry with easy access from the garage to make grocery hauls a simpler endeavour. Designer Stefan Sonntag of Masterwood Joinery was able to accommodate garage access behind cleverly concealed integrated cabinetry, and was also able to implement a hidden but thoroughly spacious laundrycum-scullery behind the kitchen.

With the dwelling rented out occasionally as a holiday home, a spacious laundry and plenty of work space were important details. As was the material palette. Needing to stand up to heavy use, the material had to be top quality and carry the ability to sustain heavy-tra ffi c wear and tear.

Multifunctional minimalism was central to the design to maintain clean lines. Hidden powerpoints, LED strip lighting, a simple yet warm colour palette, and a limited material selection all contributed to achieving the desired look. An integrated fridge with timber cabinet fronts was also utilised to maintain the sleek design and continue the seamless “wall” look.

Built to complement the Arrowtown countryside in which it sits, the warm and inviting interior of this home showcases a perfect balance of modern style and family functionality. MASTERWOOD

Constructed by an established building company, Hera Lane’s interiors were designed to showcase a higher end product typical of a bespoke build. Representing a new level of interior design and construction, while still appealing to a wide spectrum of potential buyers, this kitchen is a bold take on modern luxury.

The space was required to fi t between the steel portal frames of the home’s architectural structure. A partition wall was built around the middle steel portal for the right side of the kitchen to terminate in, while scullery walls provide a nook for the dining area, effectively hiding the frames and creating a functional open-plan layout. The black aluminium and glass cavity slider to the scullery was chosen to tie in with the sliding doors gracing the adjoining formal lounge.

A statement kitchen island separates the cooking and living spaces, its size perfectly at home under the soaring cathedral-style ceiling. Though compact, its central placement allows users to enjoy 180-degree views through the adjacent dining room and living room windows. An enclosed rangehood sports a timber-look fl oating shelf that extends either side of the central shroud, in a nod to the same aged-walnut texture on the curved-end island and accented in the scullery cabinetry.

A negative detail in brushed brass runs the perimeter of the island, adding luxury appeal and setting off the marble-look Entzo Dekton benchtop.

Continuing over to the cooking hub, the Dekton surface runs up the wall behind the range to form the splashback, keeping the material selection simple and elegant. Brushed brass hardware and tapware add a flash of metallic richness to the materials, creating a warm glow throughout the room, indicating quality and broad appeal from this high-end spec home.

FUNCTIONALITY & ELEGANCE COMBINED

Introducing the ULTRASPACE Bathroom Project by prominent designer Mark Gacesa, a masterpiece showcasing the exquisite beauty and functionality of Austaron’s Staron Solid Surfaces. This innovative bathroom design combines cutting-edge elements to create a space that exudes luxury and sophistication.

One of the standout features of the ULTRASPACE Bathroom Project is the faceted vanity top, a striking centrepiece that captivates the eye with its unique shape and pristine finish. Paired with an integrated custom Staron basin vessel and smart waste system, this vanity embodies elegance and practicality.

The storage platform, adorned with concealed Staron drawers, adds a touch of seamless perfection to the bathroom. Its sleek design seamlessly blends with the overall aesthetic while providing ample space for storing bathroom essentials, keeping the area tidy and organised.

To create a hotel-inspired ambience, Mark incorporated Pietra limestone and white Bisazza mosaic tiles in the lower main bathroom of the Art House. The custom vanity top, crafted from Staron Quasar White, features a mesmerising design with a folding front apron and a rectangular shape waste system reminiscent of origami art.

The double-ended bath, nestled within a Staron Pebble Chocolate platform, further accentuates the bathroom’s elegance. The platform harmonises e ffortlessly with the Pietra limestone fl oor and walls, creating a cohesive and visually stunning environment. The bath’s placement creates the illusion of fl oating above the ground, enhanced by the mirror that wraps around under the vanity and conceals drawers for a sleek and seamless look.

Mark’s ULTRASPACE Bathroom Project exempli fi es the perfect blend of functionality, artistry and modernity. With Austaron’s Staron Solid Surfaces, this bathroom project sets a new standard for luxurious and breathtaking design in the realm of kitchens and bathrooms.

STORAGE KING

Any good kitchen worth its salt is fi lled with practical storage. Peppered with abundant cupboards and drawers, this functional space designed by Premier Kitchens certainly adheres to the motto. The client requested a kitchen where everything had a designated spot to be put away, out of sight but close at hand. As well as overhead and base cabinets, a bank of full-length, fl oorto-ceiling cabinets rests on either side of the fridge. This wealth of storage allows even the heftiest of appliances, like the microwave, to be kept under wraps. It also allows the homeowners to maintain clear, clutter-free countertops and a crisp, clean aesthetic.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

A family-friendly result with functionality and practicality at its core were the key objectives of this kitchen update. A place for everything, and everything in its place – including the family.

solution

In this entertainer’s home, proper storage was a must. This was accommodated by ensuring that the cabinetry ran floor to ceiling in the modest space, and internal cabinetry divisions were made specifically to fit the family’s equipment needs and reduce bench clutter.

design michelle christofi (premier kitchens)
116 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

In addition to her penchant for storage, the client loves to cook and entertain her large Italian family. A generous island bench in the middle of the kitchen complements the surrounding counterspace and provides enough room to prepare feasts for her family. The white dolomite benchtop centres the kitchen and features an overhang that allows enough space for seating. As such, the island serves dual purposes: it can be used as a preparation area and a dining table – or both simultaneously!

A combination of arti fi cial and natural light provides the kitchen with ample illumination. Natural light is granted access through the framed glass door that leads outside, as well as a square skylight adjacent to the fridge. Arti fi cial lighting takes the form of LED strip lighting under the cabinets and pendants above the island bench.

Functionality and practicality were front and centre in the client brief. Beautiful, timeless features promote a feeling of re fined and subtle elegance, making this a truly memorable kitchen and one worth adding to your vision board.

SLEEK & SENSATIONAL

design daniel barns build sensational kitchens photography tamara thomas-barns

Sensational Kitchens, led by designer Daniel Barns, took on the challenge of transforming a long, narrow, empty room into a warm and welcoming living space. Despite the old and dated house, the generous size of the room offered great potential. By repositioning doors and windows, the team was able to unlock the area’s possibilities. The decision to place the kitchen at the end of the space marked the beginning of the transformation.

The newly designed kitchen boasts a smart and classic U-shaped layout, providing ample benchtop space. The tall section is concentrated on one end, while the centre of the room remains open, featuring a large bar return for casual dining. The Shaker profi le cabinetry with sleek clean lines beautifully showcases the Living Brass tap and handles. The warm Dulux Hog Bristle Quarter paint, hand-painted to add extra dimension, harmonises perfectly with the brass accents. LED task lighting adds a touch of practicality and sophistication to the overall design.

118 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

The challenge for this kitchen renovation was space. The allocated room consisted of a long, narrow footprint that needed to be reworked to become a funcational work and dining area.

solution

By moving doorways and windows, the designers were able to created a more accessible space in which to house a highly functional U-shaped layout, which offered plenty of bench space and a clearly defi ned the cooking zone.

The choice of products used in this refurbishment was carefully curated to enhance the kitchen’s aesthetic and functionality. The cabinetry and panel doors were hand-painted in Dulux Hog Bristle Quarter, creating a timeless appeal. Blum hinges and drawers ensure smooth operation and durability. The Vauth Sagel Twin Bin system provides e ffi cient storage and waste management. The 20mm Smartstone Carrara benchtop adds elegance and durability to the workspace. Perrin and Rowe’s Living Brass handles and taps serve as stunning focal points.

Other notable additions include a white subway splashback and LED strip lighting. The kitchen is equipped with high-quality appliances, including a Bosch oven and cooktop, a Smeg rangehood, a dishwasher, and a Westinghouse refrigerator. The Turner Hastings Butler Novi sink perfectly complements the design, while Perrin & Rowe’s Living Brass taps add a touch of luxury.

The result of this refurbishment is a truly inviting kitchen and dining area. Sensational Kitchens, led by Daniel Barns, has successfully created a space that combines classic elegance with modern functionality, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for both cooking and dining.

A MASTER CLASS IN CONTRAST

design dean shear (dezign kitchens)

If black and white is a match made in heaven, then this kitchen deserves all the praise it gets. Inside the sleek, edgy and highly functional kitchen, contrasting black and white cabinetry and benchtops combine with sharp, clean lines to create a dramatic and alluring space.

To celebrate the client’s fervent and precise cooking style, the kitchen was equipped with a BORA Professional system with induction, gas and teppanyaki cooktops. Installed front and centre in the island, the teppanyaki plate transforms the central benchtop into a hub of entertainment, allowing guests to gather and enjoy the cooking spectacle while still being able to interact and socialise with the host. This is a far cry from the previous white melamine modular kitchen that serviced the home. With standard-height overhead cabinets contained within a mid-height dividing wall and a tiny 1000mm x 1000mm island in the centre of a U-shaped kitchen, a signi fi cant amount of potential storage space was taken up by large bulkheads. The kitchen added nothing to the client’s home and did not re fl ect their passion for cooking and entertaining.

While the original space had huge potential, the client needed their kitchen to be spectacular. They required a kitchen that made a stylistic statement, and one that was highly user-friendly and functional. To achieve an indulgent and luxurious finish, the mid-height dividing wall was removed, successfully opening up the space and allowing for the placement of the large island.

Every inch of this remodelled kitchen exudes a moody sophistication. For example, pocket doors slide away to reveal a stunning bar area in a contrasting dark wood grain laminate. Coloured LED lighting in the bar area and in the electri fi ed overhead cabinets further enhances the ambience.

WHITE DELIGHT

design barry balmer

build designline kitchens & bathrooms

This white and bright Hamptons-style kitchen is a far reach from its previous U-shaped design thanks to Designline Kitchens & Bathrooms. With a brief to cater to entertainment and provide the necessary space for movement around the kitchen at each work station, this Hamptons paradise is a long stretch from feeling cramped.

The white Shaker-style cabinetry ticks all the boxes of the client brief, offering a classic profi le, while the spacious island was necessary to the design to create the extra working space and entertaining room required.

Making the kitchen a space for family and friends to gather was essential. From the wide passages around the counter that aid comfortable movement to the drop-down dining area, the homeowners of this monochromatic space can happily have a dinner for fi ve at the generous table or cater to a parade of guests with a menu of food options displayed across the roomy kitchen island.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

Space was the biggest factor when designing this kitchen. The homeowner’s wanted easy flow that would allow them to work, as well as entertain comfortably.

solution

A spacious island was central to achieving the necessary prep and entertaining space, while also providing the divide that created a funcational workflow within the room.

A wall of fl oor-to-ceiling cabinetry provides plenty of storage, leaving the lack of a dedicated pantry a non-issue. With thoughtful thinking for where small and large electrical appliances are to be stored, extra-wide cabinetry is home to the kettle and keeps the kitchen uncluttered and ready for work.

A beverage fridge is an added bonus to the entertainer’s dream kitchen. Tucked away under the island, the additional fridge holds a selection of wines and other beverages within easy reach, making more room in the refrigerator for the essential items.

With hardware in a contrasting black and a decadent marble backsplash, this stylish kitchen hits all the hallmarks of Hamptons chic with the optimal function required for a modern family.

A MODERN CLASSIC

design gemma haddock (collaroy kitchen centre)

A rich material palette lends this kitchen an opulent ambience. The owners dreamed of a functional and elegant space with optimal work fl ow and strong features. They also requested a dishwasher adjacent to the sink. This proved tricky considering the position of the sink in relation to the walls, but a single sink solution resolved any issues and the dishwasher now rests beside the sink for quick and easy access.

The renovated kitchen is double the size of its predecessor. The increase in fl oor space was made possible by sacri fi cing the dining room next door. Since it was seldom used, the designers were able to knock down the adjoining wall and create a kitchen with ample space and a cohesive fl oor plan.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

A lovely little terrace, ideal for alfresco dining, was underutilised due to its location next to the unused formal dining room. The clients were looking for a solution that would make this space more accessible on a daily basis.

solution

The new layout for the updated kitchen pushed through to the old dining room, generating a bigger footprint and providing an opportunity to create a connection to the terrace area. A fi xed window was changed out for a bifold window, opening up acces to the outside space, making it more inviting and habitable.

124 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

To compensate for the lack of a dedicated dining room, the kitchen incorporates a solid American white oak dining table attached to the island bench. The island was fi tted with a 40mm Neolith Calacatta benchtop and 60mm waterfall, while the rest of the benchtops were completed using 20mm Caesarstone in Organic White. A Neolith Calacatta splashback matches the island and ties the separate spaces together.

The material palette welcomes a host of di fferent textures and colours. For example, the cabinetry combines white Polyurethane doors with black Polytec feature doors. Smooth white Caesarstone benchtops host a black cooktop, black appliances and black tapware. Wood warms the scene via the oak dining table, brushbox fl oorboards and fl oating shelf. Strip lighting under the overhead cabinet and fl oating shelf adds de fi nition to these features, while a trio of pendants hang above the island and offer a hint of old-world glamour.

Another de fining feature that sets this project apart is its proximity to the terrace. Much like the old dining room, this lovely spot was rarely used. The new and improved layout means access is secured directly from the kitchen through glass doors that permit streams of natural light into the room and boost the owners’ connection to the outdoors.

MY ISLAND HOME

De fined by a large Silestone Calacatta Gold island benchtop and oozing sophistication, this kitchen is an entertainer’s delight. With a penchant for hosting culinary gatherings, the owner briefed Nobby Kitchens for an open-plan space that would accommodate delectable dinner parties and luxurious luncheons.

The kitchen was designed in conjunction with a larger home renovation that saw the removal of key structural walls to open up the space. As a result, the kitchen now acts as the hub of the home, a perfect spot where the owner can entertain friends and family.

Clean lines and restrained luxury are evident and enhanced thanks to the concealment of a once-exposed beam above the kitchen. To minimise the impact the unmovable beam had on the final result, customised drawers now fi t around the pillar to not only hide it, but to utilise the space.

In keeping with the client’s brief, the kitchen links to the family room, allowing guests to spill out of the kitchen and onto the couch with ease. Since the home is located near the beach, it was important the design re fl ected the bright and expansive setting. A mixture of white materiality and timber fl oors fi t the bill perfectly. Complementing the white and timber palette are antique-brass Hamptons-style handles, adding warmth and charm to the kitchen set-up.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

An open-plan design that facilitated entertaining with a vibe that reflected its natural coastal environment was the ultimate prize for this project.

solution

A complete reconfiguring of the original home to create one open space was required to achieve the generous proportions of this udpated kitchen. A soft, neutral colour palette was utilised in order to ensure a serene visual aesthetic and achieve the ultimate fi nish.

This bright and beautiful galley kitchen was a fresh start for the homeowners, who wanted to create their dream space. Aesthetically, it needed to be light and airy with a stylish edge. Functionally, they wanted something that was easy to maintain, with durable finishes and a logical layout with clear zones for di fferent tasks.

Lying alongside the lush garden, this kitchen has a stunning view but needed to incorporate plenty of light tones to maximise the natural illumination available. The spotlights direct light throughout the room, delivering the bright space the homeowners were after. The fresh, cool-toned white makes for a striking profi le, while the warmth of brushedbrass handles and timber fl ooring softens the look.

To add more texture to the vertical spaces, the dark-veined marble splashback creates a stunning backdrop. The iconic AGA oven in a soft green brings the tones of the outdoors inside and creates a focal point in this elongated room that ties in perfectly with the classic butler’s sink.

To accommodate the kitchen’s layout, the food prep area is towards the back of the kitchen. Drawers that span the full length of the space provide ample storage, providing easy access to appliances and cooking accoutrements for that all-important functionality.

O ffering a contrast in the space, a Bondi wall mixer set with Art round basin in high-gloss white sits atop a custom vanity.

In the shower, Industrie Tapware’s Daintree raw brass shower mixer and set with 250mm rain shower head adds an engaging sheen. The breathtaking kitchen you see came into fruition as part of a whole-of-house renovation involving knocking down walls, laying out new fl oors and revamping the entire feel of the home. Previously a cramped, impractical space, this kitchen is now truly a spot that facilitates smooth day-to-day living for this busy young family – and enables entertaining with ease too.

During the renovation, the rear wall and window were removed to make way for bifold doors that open onto the home’s new deck, expanding the area available for use when entertaining guests. This freed up space for the kitchen’s new layout, including a show-stopping island with an integrated sink for extra practicality.

The home’s old dining room, which was previously just adjacent to the kitchen, was turned into a large butler’s pantry to meet the homeowner’s request for a place to store small appliances and hide clutter to keep the main kitchen neat at all times.

The kitchen’s previous timber cabinetry and dated fl oor tiles were swapped for sleek neutrals, Hamptons-style cabinetry and modern engineered stone benchtops and splashbacks, bringing the kitchen well and truly into the 21st century. The room’s palette was further complemented by new oak-style hybrid fl ooring.

The homeowners loved working with Rosemount Kitchens to turn their dream space into reality, and are thrilled their new kitchen meets each family member’s needs.

MINIMALIST KITCHEN

A family home in the heritage bayside suburb of Middle Park received a fresh update thanks to Inset Kitchens. Built in 1915, the three-bedroom house was in need of a new extension, with the homeowners’ brief calling for “a modern kitchen on trend”.

The simplicity of the design e ffortlessly blends with the rest of the house. And you don’t need a lot of bells and whistles to create a functional, harmonious space – simple features such as the thick feature edgings of the stone bench create a subtle impact.

Overlay planked timber fl oor in limed oak complements the natural tones of the cabinetry and island, while LED lighting brightens the room. Storage comes via a large pantry with fold-in pocket doors, as well as white matt and oak drawers and pull-out shelves featured throughout.

The depth of the wall alcove was increased to incorporate the integrated fridge-freezer, which blends seamlessly into the kitchen. The feature island bench also comprises a built-in wine fridge, perfect for saving on space and allowing guests to self-serve.

Reorientating the bench was the biggest move for this kitchen, ensuring a different perspective for the users. Open shelving also assisted in adding storage and providing the owners the display space they desired.

OLD MEETS NEW

design claire forsyth alzuru (kitchens u build)

Teeming with terrazzo and swathed in subtle green hues and stylish subway tiles, this kitchen is a modern masterpiece that nods to the past and caters to the future.

Incorporating colour, timber and open shelves to allow the owner to display their servingware and indoor plants, the kitchen adopts elements of classic and modern styles. It’s the Goldilocks of kitchens: not too modern and not too classic. It’s just right! And it will remain so for years to come.

Unlike the previous white melamine kitchen that lacked personality, storage and bench space, this renovated room boasts all three in spades. Fresh Bayleaf green cabinetry and a repurposed brick fi replace provide plenty of personality, while a combination of fl oating shelves and ample cabinet and drawer space ticks the storage box. Bench space is hearty and glamorous thanks to the stunning Signorino terrazzo that adorns the island and the benches surrounding the cooking zone. White subway tiles laid in a vertically stacked pattern complement the terrazzo as they elongate the space.

Unassuming but undeniably chic, the home’s original brick fireplace has been treated to a second lease on life. Floating Victorian ash timber shelves inserted into the fi replace transform the once roaring feature into a picture-perfect storage area that is both charming and functional.

Colourful without stepping into gaudy territory, the kitchen manages to strike the perfect balance at every turn. In keeping with the client’s brief, the design makes the most of every inch of space, but it never looks overdone or like it’s trying to do too much. In short, the kitchen is perfectly balanced and exquisitely executed.

ONE WITH NATURE

architect holman designs interiors mel wilson interiors build vand builders, jfj joinery photography nic stephens

The natural tones and textures that dominate this lovely kitchen were a very conscious choice by the room’s designers. They were selected speci fi cally to imbue the space with an earthy natural feel so that it fi ts in seamlessly with the nature reserves surrounding the property. The timber fi nishes and GT&B splashback tiles were married with the Corian benchtop to achieve this goal to a tee. Though the space was designed to withstand the test of time, little touches of modernity are sprinkled throughout. Our favourite? The concealed wireless phone charger, which is placed in the perfect spot for the owners to charge their tech as they prepare dinner.

146 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Though the kitchen is undeniably beautiful, at the very forefront from the get-go was functionality. The open layout was chosen to ensure the homeowners had plenty of room to prep and cook their meals, as well as a place to sit and enjoy a drink while sharing stories of their day. All appliances and often-used accessories are placed close together for e ffi ciency, ensuring cooking meals and cleaning up afterwards are as quick as possible.

The kitchen is large, but it was designed to be easy to navigate. We have no doubt the homeowners are thrilled with the beauty and functionality their new kitchen has brought to their family home.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

While practicality and storage were to be the central focus of this kitchen project, so too was an earthy, relaxing colour palette with a natural material selection.

solution

Convenient appliance placement and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry took care of the fucntionality desired, while a prodigious use of timber ensured the ‘natural’ vibe required, which was further enhanced by the ‘lived-in’ feel of the streamlined aged-brass tapware.

MAGNIFICENT MAKEOVER

design paul smeaton (select kitchens)

Select Kitchens has been making homeowners’ dreams come true for 25 years. The experts at Select Kitchens understand that no other room in the home compares to the kitchen, the hub of activity in any household. Designing and building the perfect kitchens for their clients is second nature. Their commitment to excellence becomes evident when stepping inside this recently renovated Melbourne home.

Traditional yet contemporary, the well-appointed kitchen was renovated to keep up with the needs of its owners. The redesigned kitchen features a new white-gloss aluminium double-sash window with single-hung panels on both sides. Overlooking the sink and surrounding benchspace, it permits streams of light to enter the kitchen and fi ll the room with natural illumination. This is particularly evident when viewing the tiled wall that glistens when the light hits it, before bouncing light back into the room and o ff the benchtops.

White benchtops are punctuated with black decorative accessories and black appliances. On the fl oor, wooden boards provide a classic look to this charming kitchen. Crisp white cabinets and drawers are plentiful, while abundant bench space provides the kitchen with enough room to prepare a multi-course banquet.

The Select Kitchens team have outdone themselves with this project. If you’re inspired, consider enlisting their services for your next kitchen overhaul. THE ENTERTAINER

design peter gill c.k.d aus, c.b.d aus, c.o.i.d (rmit) (kitchens by peter gill)

architect emma tulloch architects

This kitchen was designed as part of a renovation. The new design combined the dark-timber chopping block and chairs with the soft timber fl oors and the white cabinetry to create a harmonious yet striking appearance.

The natural light that pours in from the large windows in the living area, combined with the kitchen skylight, allows the materials to really shine. An LED strip light rebated into the underside of the upper cabinets allows extra benchtop light. The space is ergonomic with separate cooking, preparation and washing zones, minimising the traffi c throughout the space. The fronts have been custom-made to have 20mm stiles and rails instead of the standard 70mm, while the cabinet internals were made dark instead of the standard white. There is an exceptional amount of storage space in the base cabinets, through to the tall cabinets and on to the two sets of upper cabinets, which go straight up to the ceiling.

150 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

The homeowners of the renovation project wished for a large, open-plan space that would provide functional cooking zones alongside areas to entertain family and friends.

solution

A functional work layout was created at one end of the kitchen, leaving the opposite end clear for entertaining guests without traffic intersection. The use of timber on the work end of the bench versus stone on the other end further emphasises this divide.

This also creates a seamless fl oor-to-ceiling balance. There’s a hidden TV behind an upper cabinet to meet the clients’ request for easy entertaining.

The extra-long benchtop, custom-made chopping block, and TV all work together to create the ultimate entertaining space. The large custom-made chopping board in the island allows for easy entertaining and provides a very unique look you don’t see every day.

MID-CENTURY MEETS MODERN

design robinson architecture

build hiah loyalty cabinets & rex building

The light, bright and cheerful kitchen you see here is worlds away from the home’s original room, which was dark and did not have space for a pantry, dishwasher or fridge.

Although the unit is only 65sqm, the homeowners felt small living could be good living and this could be achieved through thoughtful design. They strongly believed having a functional enjoyable kitchen should be the right of all apartment dwellers. The team at Robinson Architecture took this to heart. They worked their magic to bring to life this beauty of a compact kitchen, all the while adhering to a tight budget.

The bench layout you see here is the original. However, it now has added storage. The pantry and European laundry are concealed behind routed blue doors that wrap around and become the living room wall. An internal wall was relocated to make this work. However, this was very tight so allowances had to be precise. The shade of blue was chosen to match the building’s front door, paying homage to the property’s mid-century heritage.

The gently varied palette of stone, olive-coloured cabinetry, plywood edging and blackbutt fl ooring was selected to add richness and depth, off set by the basketweave tiled splashback. The Super White Dolomite benchtop is strategically only used for one section, with the rest of the benches in the more economical Formica. The tight budget was met as only a half slab of Dolomite had to be purchased.

The end result is a bright, contemporary kitchen that truly packs a punch.

DESIGN RESPONSE objective

Functionality lay at the heart of this kitchen’s new design. Small in size, it needed to be light, bright and encompass as much storage as possible.

BESPOKE BATHROOM BLISS

Prior to its chic reincarnation from ForestOne, this ensuite was tired and dated. Saddled with a built-in spa bath that the clients never used, a poky shower with full-framed glass, black and white chequered tiles, cool-white overhead lighting and a small double vanity devoid of bench space, the bathroom felt cold and commercialised.

Today, the ensuite is modern and refreshed. To foster a luxe hotel-like atmosphere, designer Darren James created light wells above the bathtub, shower bay and separate toilet. The adjoining walk-in robe dictated the size of the ensuite, while the layout was determined by budget. To keep costs under control, the existing waste locations were maintained. This meant the placement of the bathtub, toilet and vanity were predetermined.

The bespoke vanity features a Maximum Fior Di Bosco porcelain top. Replicating the appearance of natural stone, it offers the durability of porcelain and looks fantastic when combined with the Brown Tossini Elm single-drawer double vanity below. Brown Tossini Elm from Egger was an ideal

By utilising outdoor-grade substrates, the design brings the Brown Tossini Elm down the entry walls to create a link between the walk-through robe and the ensuite, creating cohesion and cementing the bespoke interior feel. The breathtaking kitchen in this newly built home exudes luxury and sophistication from every angle. Designed and executed by the team at –created by mark franek– who have a reputation for uncompromisingly high standards, quality construction and a hands-on approach, the kitchen is timeless and built to withstand the trials and tribulations of family life.

The kitchen’s eye-catching monochrome colour palette was chosen to match the dwelling’s contemporary interior and exterior. Luxurious honed marble was selected for the benchtops and splashbacks, and a stylish trio of feature pendant lights was placed just above the island to command attention.

The design team made good use of the room’s 3.2m-high ceilings by integrating fl oor-to-ceiling cabinetry against the back wall. This provides ample storage, which will no doubt help the homeowners keep the open-plan room neat and tidy at all times.

The kitchen’s impressive selection of fi xtures, fi ttings and appliances, all sourced through e&s, is particularly noteworthy. Featuring much-loved, highly reputable brands such as Gaggenau, Sirius, Axor, Novas and Oliveri, the kitchen’s suite of fi xtures, fi ttings and appliances were a considered choice. STYLE MEETS FUNCTION

This show-stopping display kitchen was designed to showcase the calibre of workmanship and design skill homeowners can expect from Fresh Kitchen Solutions. Taking a look at this space, it’s easy to see why so many homeowners select Fresh Kitchen Solutions time and time again!

The kitchen is aesthetically appealing from the get-go. The neutral colour palette ensures the space will stay contemporary for years to come, and the juxtaposition of the patterned tiles, Dekton and Silestone surfaces and timber grain elements create striking visual interest.

The join lines between cabinetry were con fi gured to run vertically through overheads down to the sets of drawers below, creating the illusion of a higher ceiling. The integrated fridge/freezer was placed to the right of the cooktop and tall cabinetry was placed to the left to balance out the space. The tall cabinet’s bifold doors open to reveal three separate storage sections, with plenty of room for pantry items and small appliances.

This kitchen boasts abundant storage, ideal for busy families. Plenty of drawers were integrated for their practicality as they allow a bird’s-eye view of every item within. A modern corner pantry is also included, with sensor lights to help home chefs find what they need and bifold doors to keep any clutter out of sight. There’s plenty of overhead cabinetry for extra storage too. They include the Blum AVENTOS HF system for ease of use. No rangehood was required thanks to the Bora cooktop with downdraft, allowing the overhead to be brought out to full depth to match the rest of the cabinetry.

It’s clear the team at Fresh Kitchen Solutions have considered every detail when designing a kitchen. Their expertise and dedication to clever design have resulted in stunning spaces like this, which are worthy of the title “heart of the home”.

SMOOTH AS SILK

Carrera Kitchens is renowned for creating custom-made, innovative and individually designed kitchens and this showstopping space is a prime example of why they are so highly respected and frequently sought after.

Black cupboard doors, black appliances, black tapware and a black island benchtop de fine this sophisticated kitchen. Lashings of white (on the walls and polished concrete fl oor) create a monochrome palette that is softened by a bank of full-length cabinets in straight-grained wood laminate. The earthy colouring of these doors offers an organic aesthetic that works well with the black granite island and black and white granite splashback. Bequeathed with thick, sinuous veins, the splashback is a focal point that centres the kitchen and makes for a hypnotising view for anyone lucky enough to cook in it.

The granite-topped island features a laminex brushed titanium shadowline, providing a subtle injection of opulence. Indeed, the entire kitchen enjoys an air of sophistication that is heightened by its concealment of major appliances. The fridge and freezer, for example, are hidden behind mattblack doors next to the cooking zone.

Anna.Carin Design Studio is Australia’s leading Scandi-style interior design atelier. The company’s work ethos places sustainability, simplicity and functionality at the forefront of each of its projects, stressing the human experience of space as central to all design decisions.

The recent completion of three kitchen projects by Lauren Ryan from Anna.Carin Design Studio, all with di fferent architectural styles, ably demonstrates the versatility of one natural, sustainable surface material across three disparate interiors.

Pebbles, by Caesarstone, is a mineral surface whose creation was inspired by the river pebble. Each of the four colours available in this range was taken directly from the earthy, natural hues and silky patina of a single pebble.

For Kitchen One, the designer selected Pebbles Wyndigo for the work surfaces of the galley-style layout. “The house sits right on a beautiful bay, so we wanted to draw the cloudy blue, green and grey hues from the water and sky inside. The soft patina and honed fi nish of Pebbles Wyndigo allowed us to do just that,” says Anna Carin, principal of Anna.Carrin Design Studio.

KITCHEN 02 riverlet

In the pared-back, contemporary palette of Kitchen Two, the designer selected the clean hue of Pebbles Riverlet for the kitchen benchtops and splashback, also carrying it into the bathroom vanity top. “A hop, skip and jump from Bondi Beach, this house is fresh, sunlit and feminine. Riverlet represented the obvious clean, warmwhite choice for the surfaces in this home,” notes Anna.

KITCHEN 03 raindream

The striking, bold design of Kitchen Three showcases Pebbles Raindream, a polished mineral surface in slate greys. “This house overlooks lush greenery, with winding tracks leading to a local creek right on its doorstep. It’s a dream in rain as well as sunshine, making this kitchen the perfect setting for Pebbles Raindream for the work surfaces and splashback,” explains Anna.

Caesarstone Pebbles mineral surfaces are far more than a sustainable, visually appealing surface. They are also easy to clean and never require sealing. Each surface carries a lifetime warranty, giving the consumer ultimate peace of mind.

Behold the spectacular HAWA-Concepta and HAWAFolding Concepta by Häfele. Providing multifunctional room solutions for the kitchen, home offi ce, washer/dryer combinations and walk-in cabinets, these systems can be applied to every room in your home. So, what is HAWA?

HAWA systems comprise furniture doors that pivot, fold and slide to disappear into astonishingly small spaces. In this sense, they are ideal for homes where space is scant, but they are equally bene fi cial in mid-sized homes and large residences

O ffering a vast range of options yet demanding only a small amount of space, this is the hardware system dreams are made of. HAWA is able to provide so much while asking so little because the doors “parked” to the side only take up a minimal amount of space inside the cabinet. The ergonomic closing mechanism includes soft-closing hinges to make the system even more userfriendly. Plus, unique scissor technology allows large and heavy doors to be implemented.

HAWA-Concepta enables doors to pivot and slide in sideways, while the HAWA-Folding Concepta sees doors fold and slide in sideways. The two systems can be combined, creating fl exibility and a high degree of personalisation regardless of door height, width or weight.

With a light and airy living space that unfurls to greet an elevated courtyard a ffording Brisbane city views, Amari, happily ensconced in its hillside location, is a home like no other. O ffering an all-pervasive sense of peace and an utterly e ffortless transition between interior spaces, and from inside to out, this home is a retreat – a place of escape from the hubbub of urban life.

The liberal use of natural materials, supported by a muted palette, helps to generate this aura of calm and connection that is especially felt in the open-plan main kitchen, living and dining space. The considered use of curves – from the bespoke locally made modular sofa to the dining table and kitchen island – has a softening e ffect and, as it’s a recurring motif, enhances the sense of fl ow and cohesion.

Boasting a deliciously curved end supported by a fl uted column, the kitchen island is the perfect gathering space. It’s topped by a sleek slab of stone, a glorious medley of greys patterned with hypnotic swirls of white, as is the long run of custom base cabinetry that hugs the back wall and extends into the dining area. Like the island,

this bank of cabinets culminates in a curve.

The same stone extends along the rear wall of the kitchen and adjacent spaces, with a tall fl uted column de fining the transition point between the dining and living areas. Elegant accents, such as the brass minimalist pendant above the island, add a little glam, but in an understated way.

Full-height glass doors welcome in an abundance of natural light and when fully opened, give access to the courtyard, pool and an outdoor entertaining terrace tucked to one side. The timber frames of the doors pick up on the warm tones of the timber fl ooring that fl ows throughout, adding another thread to the carefully woven tapestry of textures.

Amari’s interior design was a collaborative e ffort between Kelder Architects, Graya Constructions and Residence Studio. The harnessing of this creative power produced a home with a wonderful sense of serenity and a spirit-lifting connection to the treed landscape that envelops the home.

A TURNING POINT FOR TOWELS

A heated towel rail is one of those luxuries that elevates the everyday and most agree that once they’ve used one, they would never choose to be without.

Now there’s no reason to have to reach for a soggy, wet towel ever again, thanks to a flash-drying towel heater that offers an alternative to the limitations of traditional ladder-style rails.

Standing at one metre high and just over 20cm wide, the Gordon’s narrow, streamlined design allows up to four towels to be hung lengthwise, using minimal wall space, and dries up to three times faster than traditional ladder styles.

Manufactured in the UK, the vertical design features four powder-coated, non-slip fi ns that enable towels to be hooked rather than folded, meaning the unit is suitable for even the most compact of ensuites, while no in-wall components make for easy connection.

Reaching optimal temperature in 10 minutes, the Gordon is also highly energy e ffi cient. The unit can be installed in new builds or retrofi tted to existing spaces and is available in a choice of four neutral colour tones; White, Black, Dark Grey and Sandstone.

For further e ffi ciency, a programmable timer switch can be added making the Gordon heated towel rail suited to a range of environments, adding ambient heat in cooler seasons and providing a fast, flash-drying option, to quickly dry and prevent mould in humid climates.

These satisfied homeowners love their Nobby kitchen!

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS 209
REVIEW
210 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

How did you discover Nobby Kitchens and what made you choose them?

We’ve known about Nobby Kitchens for years – who could forget the “kitchens, kitchens, kitchens” ads? But this was the first time we’ve designed and built our own kitchen and we were looking for high quality, cost competitiveness and great service. Nobby delivered on all of that after we visited their showroom.

What was the design process and how did you feel going through it?

The design process was very collaborative. We were assigned our own designer, who was extremely professional and creative, helping us tailor the kitchen to exactly what we were after. Our designer was always ready to take a call or visit in person whenever we needed. We had a lot of fun working with him.

How long was the build process and how did the home’s inhabitants cope during this period?

The build was extended a little by some ancillary work we were doing, but overall the process was about as unobtrusive as it could have been – especially since our home offi ce is immediately adjacent to where it was all happening. The full project management service Nobby offers meant they organised everything and managed the stress if something didn’t go quite to plan. Their tradesmen were exceptional – incredibly helpful, courteous and accommodating – and the quality of their work and attention to detail were amazing.

What is your favourite thing about your new kitchen space?

We love the colour – our friends call it bold! Also, the design allowed all of our appliances to be hidden away, which makes for a sleek, uncluttered look.

How has it changed the way you operate in your home?

The layout works incredibly well, even when there are two bossy women working in close proximity, and we have more kitchen storage space than we can fi ll.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS 211 REVIEW

Why do we need a kitchen designer?

One of the great things about us, humans is that we adapt. We adapt to great and not-so-great conditions. Should we adapt to a poorly designed kitchen? If you look closely at few kitchens from various magazines or websites, you may notice some mistakes in planning, such as:

The preparation area is too small. The prep area is situated between the sink and the cooktop: it should be of a decent in size (ideally 900mm) and free of obstacles. The prep area should be designated only to cooking and preparation of food and should be separate from other activities such as storing appliances or having breakfast.

The dishwasher is situated between the sink and cooktop. This is the most common mistake some builders and some cabinet makers make

when planning a kitchen. As mentioned above, the area between the sink and the cooktop should be solely for cooking, with a dishwasher in the way, not only will it disrupt the flow of cooking, but could be hazardous.

The rubbish bin is far from the sink. You’re doing the dishes and have to unclog the sink. After scooping up the food residue, ideally, it should be relatively easy to get to the bin. When bins are anywhere but underneath or beside the sink or preparation area, the flow

of cooking becomes interrupted and can even be hazardous when what needs to be discarded is dripping with oil or water.

There is a tall tower between the sink and cooktop. You may be noticing a trend now… The space between the stovetop and sink is the crux of the kitchen. So, when there are obstacles in the way such as an oven-tall tower, it becomes a major hazard. All hazards should be avoided at any cost, and in this instance, it all starts with clear, thought-out planning.

Kitchen Design Academy was founded in 2012 in Melbourne and is a premier educator for kitchen and bathroom designers, approved internationally. To date, Kitchen Design Academy has trained kitchen designers from all continents.

It is a registered member of IARC (International Approval and Registration Centre) and is an approved member of IADL UK (International Association for Distance

Learning). The delivery is exclusively online, giving students the flexibility to learn at their own pace, from wherever they please.

We offer the following programs:

1. Certificate in Kitchen Design Essentials – 7 Modules (online only)

2. Certificate in Kitchen Design – 14 Modules (available full time or casualonline or distance)

3. Diploma in Kitchen and Bathroom Design – 18 Modules - (full-time online or distance)

4. Advance Certificate in Kitchen Design – 5 Modules (available full-time only-online or distance)

With these flexible learning options, students can forget the stress of exams and deadlines! They can take as long as is necessary, we want them to succeed!

We can all adapt to our environment, but in some cases, we don’t have to. Clients shouldn’t have to compromise the use of their kitchens because their kitchen designers didn’t know better. That’s what makes a professional kitchen designer stand out, they know how to get the best outcome from the beginning. www.kitchendesignacademyonline.net

This satisfied homeowner shares his journey with Designline Kitchens & Bathrooms

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS 213 REVIEW
214 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

How did you discover Designline Kitchens & Bathrooms, and what made you choose them?

I had visited and spoken to many renovating companies, but they did not leave a positive impression. So I went online and Google searched “renovations near me” and came across Designline. I made an appointment and from the moment I walked in I knew they were the ones for me.

What was the design process and how did you feel going through it?

The Designline team came out to my home and we went through the details of what I wanted, as well as my expectations. It was a comprehensive discussion and the team listened to all my concerns and even provided suggestions on how I can further improve on my renovation ideas. We later sat in their offi ce and went through the preliminary plans and discussed those in detail and made tweaks. The entire process left me quite con fi dent that Designline would certainly look after me very well. It gave me great peace of mind knowing this.

How long was the build process and how did the home’s inhabitants cope during this period?

The build process started early February and fi nished end April, but due to COVID lockdowns, some minor tasks were extended to May. During the build, we moved in with family so the house was empty and ready for Designline to work their magic.

What is your favourite thing about your new kitchen?

Where do I start? I love absolutely everything about it, from the Shaker-style cabinetry to the functionality and abundance of space, and how the kitchen complements my Federation house. Not to mention the chef appliances! I am still in awe even today and admire the workmanship. It simply is stunning.

How has it changed the way you operate in your home?

My day-to-day living is simpler, functional and so easy. The abundance of space I now have makes cooking such a breeze and getting ready for breakfast is e ffortless. I am so proud to be in my kitchen as it brings me so much joy and muchneeded storage.
