is awards season again, and the date etched into the calendars of every designer around the country was the beginning of July, when the winners of this year’s NKBA Excellence in Design Awards were announced. These awards are the most prestigious and respected awards programme of the year, highlighting the very best in New Zealand kitchen and bathroom design. By the time you read this, the party will be over for another year. However, as the official publication of the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA), Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly (KBQ) has been given the exclusive rights to publish all the winners — which you’ll find in the 40-page printed supplement tucked inside of this issue.

In this edition, we have dedicated a huge section to the best of the entries from the 2022 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards (p40), combined with our regular look at kitchen designs from around the country, which begins on page 19, followed by our usual products showcase (p30), we can safely say that this bumper issue of Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly is packed with a plethora of ideas and trends to help you with every aspect of your kitchen or bathroom build. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of KBQ as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you.

ADVERTORIAL

Royal Oak Kitchen by Natalie Du Bois (Du Bois Design)

CHOOSING A KITCHEN DESIGNER IN AN UNREGULATED INDUSTRY

T

he price of a high-end designer kitchen in New Zealand can easily surpass $100,000, and even the average kitchen renovation can be expected to reach into the tens of thousands. Yet as one of the most expensive rooms in the home, it is concerning that we too often place our kitchen dreams into the hands of the inexperienced. Unfortunately, not many Kiwis realise that the kitchen design industry is unregulated and there is no current legislation requiring a kitchen designer to be qualified. There is also a misconception that kitchen designers only choose benchtops and cabinet colours. The reality is that a qualified and/or experienced kitchen designer does much more. In fact, aesthetics is just one component of this complex design role. And I would go as far as saying that contracting an experienced kitchen designer is integral to the overall success of a build or renovation, and it also helps to avoid costly mistakes.

16 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

A professional kitchen designer creates spaces that are spatially aware, with work flows and ergonomics well considered. They ensure a kitchen is designed to meet the needs and wants of the occupants and that it considers the architectural context of the home. A professional kitchen designer understands the variety of materials, products and appliances on offer and which options will work best and be the right fit within every individual project. In addition to this, a professional kitchen designer should be able to beautifully balance an interior space to create a stunning aesthetic that meets the style of the homeowner. So how do you choose an experienced kitchen designer? One way is to select a Designer of the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA NZ), the only professional membership organisation in New Zealand for kitchen and bathroom designers. The association currently has more than 450 designers and strongly advocates education

” Kai & Ply by Margaux Word (Chroma Interiors)

for its designers. Every year, more than 130 students complete the National Diploma in Kitchen Design. All professional members are put through an assessment process before receiving their NKBA membership. And as a professional organisation committed to education and increased professionalism in the industry, all Designers of NKBA need to keep up with their Continued Professional Development if they want to retain their membership status. As the Chief Executive of NKBA and an advocate for increased professionalism in the design industry, I am acutely aware of what can go wrong when a designer is chosen for a project that is outside of their experience. Projects can get incredibly costly when joinery has to be remade due to poor design choices or when projects overrun due to poor project management. We also know how disappointing it can be when the kitchen you dreamed of is not delivered. If working with a Designer of NKBA is not an option, I would recommend asking all potential designers some simple questions, including what qualifications they have, if you can see examples of their previous work and if they have any testimonials to back up their expertise. I would also suggest seeking a designer with a diploma in kitchen design or an interior design qualification, coupled with more than five years of specific kitchen design experience. Working with a professional in most industries is always best, and the kitchen design industry should be no different. Don’t get me wrong, you should absolutely choose a designer who has a beautiful Instagram grid, but it shouldn’t stop there. You should do your homework and dig deeper below the surface before making your designer selection. Trust me, you can’t afford not to.

NATURE

Nature and relaxation are the perfect mix in this private oasis created by Rare Birds Interiors. A commitment to health and wellbeing through nature defines the space, with natural stone and timber producing a calming ambience. The vanity features Portsea Grey Limestone with custom fluted oak that flows beautifully to the oak shower screen for a touch of privacy. Accompanying the oak shower is an Apasier stone bath with a self-watering planter above for a stunning focal point that ignites the senses. Moonstone tiles inspired by Brazilian quartzite perfectly

draw together the natural elements with a cool white base. The original bathroom featured a cavernous interior which, while spacious, had a dated feel with a corner spa bath and two small vanities. The new design focuses on creating a warm, inviting space alongside the owner’s need for a private retreat for relaxation. The result is a tropical oasis, perfect for resting after a long day and reconnecting with nature. Design Kelly Gammie (Rare Birds Interiors) Build Rare Birds Interiors

COD WE LOVE

This brand-new rural home was designed with a strong homestead aesthetic, where simple elegance and quality underpin every aspect. Mastercraft Kitchens Wairarapa was commissioned to build the client’s dream kitchen: a blend of Cape Cod and farmhouse styles with a modern twist. This was achieved by combining the best visual and functional ingredients. Modern and traditional elements were blended, such as the integrated appliances and LED strip lighting set against Shakerstyle cabinetry and window cabinets. The introduction of colour around the island bench adds a modern touch and creates a visual cue where guests can congregate in the heart of the home.

22 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Porcelain is a highly durable and easyto-clean surface, so it was a natural choice for the bench and splashback while still making for a stunning feature. A busy family requires a kitchen that will stand the test of time, so Blum technology and quality appliances were specified. Of note are the clever Fisher & Paykel cool drawer for the bar zone, and a generous 120cm freestanding gas oven and hob. A key feature here is the large scullery, providing an outstanding space for food preparation and storage (both closed and open shelf). Every aspect of practicality has been taken care of, from the easy lines of sight for high-use items to wellexecuted task lighting. Design Bella Cassita & Richard Carroll

MODERN FARMHOUSE An industrial farmhouse aesthetic was used to great effect by Mastercraft Kitchens to give this new home in North Canterbury a timeless sense of style. Marrying traditional and contemporary colours, textures and materials has resulted in a rustic yet modern kitchen for this busy family that loves to entertain. The island bench is the clear hero. It is constructed from reclaimed timber sourced from Lyttleton Wharf and topped with a Neolith porcelain benchtop. The island also houses a cleverly hidden heat pump, leaving the cathedral ceiling and high walls unencumbered in this large open space. The robust island is a stunning contrast against a sleek, minimalist work zone behind it. This far section of the kitchen is topped with a

24 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

black honed-granite benchtop and inset with an induction cooktop and a barely noticeable sink offset to one side. The scullery continues the black porcelain benchtop and white cabinetry, and features solid timber floating shelves. The laundry and mudroom are a study in charm. The character in the floorboards is given a chance to shine when paired with the white cabinetry, while the timber bench seat that runs the length of the space calls out to visitors to come in, sit down and relax. AN ENTERTAINER’S

DREAM There’s no denying food is a key part of modern life, with the kitchen the heart of the home, and this super-sleek Auckland kitchen exemplifies this to perfection. The clients’ brief was to create a usable space that would allow them to entertain with minimal mess and have the ability to close off the functional areas if desired. They also wanted the kitchen to be within easy access of the outdoor deck for dining in the warmer months. The solution, devised and built by Stylehouse Design, is a statement kitchen and scullery that can be adapted to the clients’ changing needs.

26 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

The scullery can easily be closed off to hide dirty dishes and cooking mess, while the kitchen has the requisite “wow factor” the owners were seeking. The sophisticated design is deceptively simple, utilising mostly natural products like wood and stone to reflect the homeowners’ contemporary style. The decor in the hidden scullery and open kitchen area is uniform, so it appears continuous and harmonious. Opting for integrated appliances where possible heightens the simple elegance of the space and allows the beautiful dark-lacquered American White Oak cabinetry to feature.

CLASSIC MEETS

MODERN This show-stopping kitchen is a modern extension of a Victorian-era villa in Auckland’s Greenlane. Delicately treading a fine line between restoration and modernisation, this ultra-modern kitchen juxtaposes nicely with the historical features of the existing home while at the same time allowing the family more space and convenience. Visual balance and an open-plan feel are achieved using a restrained dark-colour palette, contrasting white countertops and pops of brass for depth and interest. Custom-made brass legs support a cantilever dining table and are

a subtle nod to the home’s origins, tying the old and new together seamlessly. The Blum LEGRABOX drawers, storage solutions and pull-out bins add to the stylishness and functionality of the space. ORIENTAL INDUSTRIAL CELIA VISSER CELIA VISSER DESIGN The expat owners of this 1990s architecturally designed home returned to New Zealand for their retirement and called upon Celia Visser Design to renovate their kitchen area. They wanted to ensure it would fit with the home’s existing architecture and, as avid cooks, needed a much larger space to comfortably use. One of the main challenges for this project was that the kitchen’s size and exterior view were restricted by three walls. There was also an unused room behind the existing kitchen that could be incorporated, but the dividing wall was a major structure for the three-storey home. The removal of the structural and supporting walls was a big undertaking, however it opened the kitchen to the adjacent room, allowing the space to double in size while exposing the beautiful

42 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

harbour views. This decision allowed for the creation of a larder to complete meal prep, a hidden clean-up space, increased storage, and a display with direct access from the kitchen. Storage was maximised to house appliances and kitchen objects while an entertaining station was incorporated, complete with a sink and fridge. Further design updates included custom steel doors to divide the hallway from the kitchen and living areas, recycled Matai flooring, which replaced existing carpet, cupboards and shelving clad in ‘blued’ steel and native timber to seamlessly blend with the home’s architectural industrial features, as well as marble benchtops to add to the organic feel of the home. The result is an incredible transformation to be cherished for years to come.

RESERVATION WITH A VIEW MARIANNE GAILER KITCHENS BY DESIGN This stunning kitchen transformation overlooks a reserve, offering its family of four an idyllic space for collaboration of cooking, homework and entertaining. The brief entailed improving the storage and flow of the kitchen, better lighting, additional bench space and seating for both the dining area, and for the two teenage boys of the home to be able to comfortably sit and complete homework. A display area to showcase family heirlooms was also requested, along with a wine fridge to help house the allimportant vino. The family wanted to create a great atmosphere that matched the external views. The original floor plan was cramped, so clear zones needed to be formed so both parents could cook and prep together. By moving the existing oven tower, more bench space was created. A pull-out pantry and pull-out oil and spice storage are now also practically located,

and the peninsula was moved closer to the dining area, creating clear cooking and cleaning zones. The teens have their allocated seats for homework at the peninsula and window seats for additional storage and seating were also incorporated into the new design. A second pantry with pocket doors clears the walk-through and includes bench space for small appliances. A structural post was incorporated into the island bench and cleverly clad in an antique bronze mirror to hide it. The same mirror defines the bar area with a wine fridge and a glass cabinet above to show off the beautiful collection of classic soda makers and glassware. The home’s board-and-batten features throughout inspired the use of timber as a decorative detail, and the colour scheme and LED lighting create the desired magical atmosphere, especially in the evening.

ENTERTAINER'S DELIGHT JANE FERGUSSON KITCHENS BY DESIGN A holiday home for four on the beautiful Pauanui Waterways required an entertainer’s indoor and outdoor kitchen to take full advantage of the relaxed surrounds. With plenty of storage for platters and bowls, a hidden appliance garage, a bar leaner for entertaining and the selection of warm yet durable finishes, the homeowners’ brief for a special space for the entire family to enjoy was well and truly met. The room allocated was large enough to accommodate the numerous appliances and storage requirements and allowed for added grandeur in its styling. The design incorporates two kitchens, divided by sliding doors that, when opened, provide an extended kitchen space that connects the two into one — an entertainer’s delight. The inside kitchen is for mum to prepare meals while the adjacent, outdoor kitchen

46 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

is for dad to cook his barbecue feasts. Their two children, aged 12 and 17, can access the pantry and small appliance garage without interfering with the prep, cooking or cleaning areas, making mealtime an effortless process for all. Oak veneer joinery provides texture and warmth, while the Dekton Lunar benchtop delivers a practical, durable surface and keeps the palette light. Resene Double Foundry Lacquer cabinetry fronts are paired with Dekton Bromo fronts for the overhead cupboards and are continued to the outside kitchen for connectivity and durability. The wow factor comes from the marble raised leaner in Arabescato Orobico Grigio on one end of the kitchen island, which adds that special element for friends and family to gather around. LED lighting under the leaner and in adjacent areas provides a softness at night that illuminates the entertainment area.

GREEN WITH ENVY MICHELLE GILLBANKS KITCHENS BY DESIGN These empty nesters were well and truly ready for a grown-up kitchen now that their adult children had flown the coop. Colour and brightness were top of the agenda but needed to be balanced with clean lines and a structured layout. Easy-to-maintain and uncluttered surfaces combined with ample space for cooking alongside one another were also a must. To tackle the latter, the island’s position was moved to allow for a widened walkway, creating harmony when cooking together. Choosing the colour palette for this new kitchen was a natural process as the home was already layered with different shades of green — in the wall art and the pottery dotted around the living room. As a result of this inspiration, a striking slab of Macchiato Quartzite with contrasting

folds of teal and coffee brown was selected for the island benchtop. The same stone was used for the backsplash and enhances its dramatic effect, sitting behind the cooktop like a piece of modern abstract art. The emotional response from the owners regarding the selected colour was incredibly rewarding for designer Michelle and the team at KBD, with comments from the happy couple likening it to their favourite fish and chip shop back home in Scotland. A smoky glass mirror was wrapped around the front of the island, enhancing the beautiful stone and creating a floating effect when viewed from certain angles. For the practical surfaces, hardwearing and easy-to-clean stainless steel was used on the hob bench as well as in the scullery.

THE MEWS MASTERWOOD JOINERY Originally one of the small cottages designated as a holiday home within the Millbrook Resort estate of Arrowtown, this masterful kitchen renovation sought to open up the small spaces indicative of these dwellings to allow the house to breathe and give it some contemporary functionality. Tight building restrictions in the area meant no large alterations to the existing footprint were possible, and the open-plan area desired of the new kitchen zone had to work within the existing square footage. Inclusion was incredibly important to the owners, so a sophisticated, warm and inviting space was requested. The kitchen was to be an integral key connecting the living spaces, allowing everyone to be a part of the action. Previously boxed into a dark corner, thanks to its transformation, the kitchen now occupies a centralised position, optimising the social activities of the family that inhabits this home. A natural colour palette was employed to work with the rammed earth walls, which were

50 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

created internally to add warmth and texture to the home. The earth is sourced from the Crown Range, located between Wanaka and Queenstown, and adds weighty proportions and warmth to the space. These walls underpinned the feel for the renovation and were integral to the textural palette. Timber joinery of Querkus Oak Robusta in a deep, rich wood grain runs the length of the kitchen’s back wall, providing plenty of storage and an excellent counterpoint to the light earthen walls. A lighter timber of Shinoki Desert Oak forms the large island, the lighter hue meshing beautifully with those same walls that are such a feature in the home’s overall design. Capping it all off is a superlative marble that creates plenty of prep space on the island and works as the splashback behind the cooktop. The use of this stunning stone ties the extensive use of natural materials together, shaping a dream holiday home for the entire family that readily reflects its picturesque surrounds.

HICKS COTTAGE MASTERWOOD JOINERY A kitchen designed with visiting friends and family in mind, this space boasts a social atmosphere while still feeling like a natural extension of the dining and living areas. Due to the kitchen sitting in a part of the living and dining area with extensive blackened-steel structures, the design had to be strong to suit. The selected materials were chosen to sustain a lifestyle that, at times, would be humming with visitors and therefore needed to be durable yet easy to maintain. The soft-touch dark fronts on the plywood cabinetry and the porcelain backsplash and benchtops keep the kitchen stylish but low maintenance. A key feature is the walk-in pantry, accessed by joinery doors

and with the same-quality materials as the main kitchen. When the doors are open, the pantry offers a larger work area and evokes the feeling of more space. When entertaining gets in the way of cleaning up, the pantry doors can be closed to hide away any mess. One of the highlights of this space is the creation of an area to congregate around while the chef is busy preparing meals. The Harlem Oak Bar Top was deliberately placed in the centre of the island, at a 90 degree angle, for this reason. The blackened steel legs complement the surrounding steel framework and ties the kitchen and living areas together, drawing the eyes up to the oak-panelled ceiling.

VILLA SHOWPIECE MORGAN CRONIN CRONIN KITCHENS A century-old family villa was to undergo a complete renovation, with a new kitchen design to be the first step in this exciting journey. The reimagining of the kitchen included one structural change, removing the wall separating the laundry from the kitchen to allow for a walk-in scullery. The scullery was to be the practical space, concealed behind sliding doors, while the kitchen was to be the showpiece of the home. The owners requested a modern, minimalist, ‘architectural’ appearance with warm materials and earthy tones. Meeting the brief was achieved with rich, dark oak cabinetry, as well as a prodigious use of marble deeply veined with swirls of grey, white and gold. The island was to be treated more like a piece of furniture rather than a kitchen bench, with seating required at one

end. Using the marble to great effect, the thick stone slab that caps the island runs into an integrated sink on one end, forming a solid ‘block’, while extending to form a cantilevered seating area at the other end for casual dining. Balanced delicately on recessed metal posts, the island appears to hover above the floor in an appealing stance. Soon after the new kitchen was designed, an architect was engaged to update the back end of the house, which included improving the skylight above the kitchen and consistent ceiling levels throughout the kitchen and living room, thereby opening up the space and injecting more natural light. Continuing the wow-factor, all the oak cabinetry has mitred corners and was designed to line up with the high ceilings, while the expansive width of the kitchen’s back wall is exaggerated by a lack of interruption and minimal detail.

REFINED BOLD STATEMENT KIRA GRAY FYFE KITCHENS This large, new and modern masonry family home sits atop a cliff with extensive sea views. With such dramatic surrounds, it was only natural for the owners to request an openplan kitchen with a luxurious Hollywood glamour twist. The family of four are avid entertainers and are passionate about food, baking and preserving. The kitchen therefore had to be functional for frequent use, with seating to accommodate each family member. A natural dark-stained oak was chosen for the cabinetry to add depth of colour and contrast against the lighter oak floor. The cabinetry was extended to the ceiling for maximum storage and strategically placed for functionality of tasks, while retaining views to the sea and living area.

54 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

The continuation of the pelmet seamlessly formed the entry to the scullery, situated between the breakfast station and the bar, combating the challenge of being able to blend this entry, despite its position in the middle of the kitchen. Leathered granite reminiscent of land and sea formations was applied to the benchtops and splashback. A cladded section was incorporated on the island for impact and visual interest, which was relieved with a timber seating area. Brass accents in the taps, handles and pendants, combined with velvet fabrics, created the elegant Hollywood atmosphere the owners desired. The result is a refined yet balanced and bold space with strong lines and substance.

MID CENTURY COLONIAL KIRA GRAY FYFE KITCHENS A busy working couple with a toddler and another baby on the way recently purchased this late mid-century colonial home. With lots of traditional charm and detailing throughout, it was essential this character be retained throughout the renovation process. The works involved combined three separate rooms, kitchen, dining and living, into one large open-plan space. Existing walls were removed to open up the area, with the kitchen placed to the rear of the room, allowing the seamless flow between the dining, living and outdoor spaces. The owners wanted to evoke a sense of quirky elegance, so they did away with matching finishes and opted for an eclectic mix of materials instead. Stainless-steel knobs and finger-pulls contrast with the brass knobs on the glassware pantry, while industrial pendant lights add further interest.

56 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Clear zones were established within the L-shape configuration and island bench, defining the sink, cook and prep stations. With seats places at the island, it allows for perfect prepping and baking with toddlers. Crisp white panelled cabinetry accentuates the traditional detailing and contrasts softly with the pastel duck egg hue of the island. Ceiling battens were also introduced with a detailed scotia that forms the cornice to the kitchen — stepping in and out around the cabinetry for an aesthetic consistent with mid-century design. In keeping with the theme, a feature rangehood encasement with plate ledge and corbel detailing was created. The classic white tiles, butler sink, fluted posts and skirting details all add to the character of this humble family home, retaining its soft, sunny and inviting aesthetic.

MOODY EARTHY AESTHETIC KIRA GRAY FYFE KITCHENS A functional bathroom was needed in this family home to accommodate three teenage boys. Nestled in rural country hills, an earthy lodge aesthetic using timber and schist stone accents set the tone of the abode. The renovation sought to combine a separate toilet and bathroom space to create the perfect oasis for the boys. Key requirements involved ample towel storage, two basins, a large shower, and concealing the view of the toilet from the kitchen when the bathroom door was left open. To achieve this, walls and timber ceilings were removed to combine both spaces and proportionately lowered. The layout was reconfigured for functionality and an existing bath removed to allow space for the large shower.

The natural porcelain floor tile located in the kitchen was selected to continue through to the bathroom for consistency and warmth and was applied to two of the walls. A gloss feature tile reminiscent of moss-covered stone was also applied to enhance the modern earthy aesthetic. Dark-stained timber cabinetry combines the display and towel storage upon entering. This continues to form the privacy screen to the toilet in the shape of fins, spaced evenly apart as to not enclose the area. The timber vanity is substantial and masculine, connecting with the cabinetry opposite. Bold gunmetal vessel basins and tapware sit beautifully against the tiles to create a natural elegance, heightened with ambient lighting around the mirror and beneath the vanity.

WAI POUNAMU GREENSTONE WATERS KATE CARTER KATE CARTER DESIGN You won’t need to look too hard to discover the inspiration — and starting point — for this kitchen design. When the homeowners laid eyes on the slab of natural Verde Fusion granite, eventually used for the kitchen island, it was love at first sight! Inspired by their fond memories of family holidays to the west coast, the stone reminded them of a very special piece of Pounamu that they treasure dearly. Aesthetically, a kitchen with wow factor that wasn’t boring but also not too ostentatious was the brief. The owners wanted a space that reflected them as a family. Clean lines, high attention to detail and uncluttered surfaces combine with a mix of materials and textures, including timber veneer. This is contrasted with moody navy cabinetry and brass accents. Lighting was key

58 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

to bringing the design to life, with a cluster of custom hand-blown ombre glass pendants an integral feature of the design. Functionally, clear work zones were established for food preparation and cleaning, while practical storage solutions were integrated to ensure every bit of available space was put to good use. The kitchen needed to work equally well on a typical weekday for a busy family of four with two young children, as well as on the weekends when groups of friends would be hosted for a barbeque. Kids swimming, friends chatting around a central kitchen island with a glass of wine in hand. The family wanted to feel like they could be busy working in the kitchen, yet still be connected to the people, activities and conversations going on around them.

PAPAMOA BEACH HOUSE BRIDGET AITKEN MOUNT JOINERY A dream retirement home in Papamoa with serene ocean views needed a fitting kitchen for easy cooking and entertaining. As taking full advantage of the scenic seaside surrounds was integral to this kitchen’s design, a ceiling-mounted extractor was placed over the island so as not to interrupt the view while cooking. With the homeowner eager to entertain guests, the new space needed to be multifunctional, with flexible dining options. To fulfil this need, a two-table configuration was chosen — with minimal fixing points. This innovative design provides a couple of configurations to choose from. Set the table to run along the length of the island to provide cosy dining for two, or swing the table around to form a 90 degree angle from the island and you have plentiful dining for four — all the while admiring the island’s stunning stone backdrop. The architectural style of the home features Japanese Yakisugi cedar

weatherboards and a minimalistic interior, which served as the inspiration for the kitchens material palette. Matt-black velvet laminate was utilised for the doors, chosen for its anti-fingerprint features, and a benchtop in matt-black porcelain for its 12mm profile and heatproof attributes. An engineered stone of Compac Ice White was used to make up the splashback and island panel, its delicate pattern reminiscent of Japanese cherry blossoms. Lit from above and below by LED lighting, the highlighted pattern on the stone provides a textural contrast to the matt-black cabinetry. Ideal for entertaining, this design also incorporated a dry-bar in an alcove off the kitchen area that offers a host of wine storage. Also featuring the same luminous stone, this serviceable area features Blum SERVO bi-fold doors that allow the area to be hidden or exposed at the touch of a button, completing its spare but sophisticated style.

A restrained palette of soft greys, black and timber was selected to bring to life the design’s modern, moody and minimalist theme. Integrated appliances ensured clean lines along the joinery and black Blanco sinks continued the harmonious but monochromatic colour scheme. The uncluttered aesthetic was further enhanced with deeper textures through the use of oak battening along the front and around the end of the kitchen’s elongated peninsula. Comfortably seating six, the curved edge of this architectural element gives the space gravitas. The workhorse of the kitchen, this highly functional space is decked out with wine fridge, countertop appliances, additional sink and a wall of ovens. Plenty of cupboards and drawers ensure ample storage, while open shelving above the counter is not only functional but highly decorative. A work of art in its own right, this prep area helps the homeowners to maintain the minimalist aesthetic in the main kitchen. While handle-less cabinetry graces the cooking and serving zone, long door and draw pulls with a knurled texture add visual interest in the scullery. Further enhancing the beauty of this area is the LED lighting that runs beneath the open shelving. In addition, smoked glass is fitted to closed cabinetry on one side of the scullery and lit from within to make the ideal display space for the homeowner’s glassware collection.

LINEAL VIEW NICOLA ROSS NICOLA ROSS DESIGN Upon entering this powder room, it becomes immediately evident that the homeowners love aspirational spaces that evoke a sense of luxe moodiness — akin to a room you’re likely to find in a high-end restaurant or bar. Situated just off the home’s foyer on the ground floor, this powder room is used by inhabitants and guests alike. Creating a space with a unique point of view that reflected the linear elements used throughout other areas of the home, therefore became the basis of the design brief. Making a statement that cannot be ignored is a wall mural depicting a serene Buddha. Its colourful tones provide a juxtaposition to the predominately black palette of the room and adds a playful element that enhances the overall environment.

64 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Black-painted timber battening is used to clad the powder room walls, playing off the oak staircase that stands in the adjacent foyer, serving to unify the two spaces. Also used to form a screen to hide the commode, this vertical battening offers both privacy and textural interest in the room. Smooth curves in the choice of basin and wall mirrors helps to offset the linearity of the battening, as does the curved edge of the vanity. A soft grey stone counter has a softening effect that defines the vanity as well as lightening the overall darkness of the space. The Eastern flair of this space is subtle and tasteful, providing guests with a convenient place to use the facilities in an aesthetically visual environment guaranteed to delight the senses.

SUITE DREAMS NICOLA ROSS NICOLA ROSS DESIGN This luxury ensuite for a married couple is the perfect space to unwind from the day. Boasting high ceilings and large open spaces, the various areas of the room are defined by different tiling and light values, generating the modern aesthetic and sanctuary-like feel the homeowners desired. To fill some of the space, a monolithic approach was taken when laying out the vanity zone, ensuring it not only took up space but made a bold statement on its own. Clean lines form the floating vanity, which is clad in Cloudburst Concrete and features mitred edges and push-to-open doors for a seamless finish. Special consideration was given to the fittings and fixtures to ensure it would elevate the overall space and create an appealing focal point, while double above-counter basins guarantee plenty of

space for the owners to get ready at the same time. Large, curved frameless mirrors set up a counterpoint to all the linear details in the tiling and right angles of the room’s many fixtures, producing a visual balance within the space. A quiet colour palette of neutral tones of grey and white generate a sense of quiet that is restful and relaxing. To keep the design interesting, texture is created through the use of small finger tiles on two feature walls and veined, stone-like tiles that run across the floor and throughout the shower. Creating the haven these homeowners wanted, the minimal approach to this design only serves to enhance the luxurious appeal of its end result.

MR & MRS SMITH BERNADETTE DU PLOOY PATON KITCHENS Overcoming a few design challenges, this reimagined kitchen now reflects a highly textural space warmed with natural elements and containing all the ‘flow’ required in the compact space. While the client, Mrs Smith, originally requested a freestanding oven that also allowed access into her new scullery directly from the kitchen, this proved difficult with regard to placement. Given the two-storey nature of the home, duct placement for a freestanding hob became a challenge — with ducting having to go through the wall next to the window. As a downdraft hob was also not a viable solution, due to traffic flow in the space, the solution was to keep the cooktop where it was in order to allow for an unimpeded opening into the scullery. Changing to an induction cooktop and double pyrolytic ovens took care of the cooking zone challenge and opened up the space to make room for the island that was the client’s second request. To ensure Mrs Smith received the kitchen island of her dreams, which included seating, the structure was moved further into the dining space. This new position created a sufficient walkway behind

66 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

the seated area, ensuring good traffic flow. It also widened the opening into the kitchen from the hallway, making passage into this high-traffic area easier. With an ideal cooking triangle created and the client’s island on the plan, the next order of business was the material palette. Going with a dark theme, the cabinetry boasts a matt-black finish that is kept streamlined with the use of seamless finger pulls as opposed to handles or knobs. The modern aesthetic is keep going with lighter manufactured stone countertops with a concrete-like finish, adding a touch of industrial to the design. One of the highlights of the design is the backsplash, fashioned of a solid panel material that has a rustic metallic treatment that really grabs the eye. This panel is also placed across the front of the island, tying the whole design together with its rich and earthy vibe. As the Smiths also like to entertain family and friends, the pièce de résistance of the new space was the inclusion of a bar area next to the fridge. Hidden by matt-black cabinetry and topped by the same concrete-like stone, this functional area is a great asset to the overall design.

By removing these walls and opening up the entire area, the new design provided the illusion of greater space and gave the owners the open flow they wanted. The anchor for the design was the stunning Titanium Gold Granite that was chosen for the island. It has become the statement piece in the room, giving the design gravitas and forming a solid fixture around which the kitchen activity flows. An intriguing mix of cabinetry in Laminex

acrylic matt in Meringue and Luxe board in Cosco Cobrie, which ties in with the Laminam in Moro used for the front door, creates an appealing textural contrast throughout the space. Completing this unique material palette is Cotsworld glass in Black Forest that was utilised as a backsplash in the scullery, behind the cooktop, as well as along the front of the island, creating additional texture and adding visual interest. As the homeowners entertain family and friends on a regular basis, with large groups of people often staying over, they needed to be able to store food in bulk. Along with extensive storage, space was borrowed from the original wine cellar and turned into a walk-in chiller. The owners are over the moon with the beauty and functionality of their kitchen.

EAGLE'S NEST STU MARTIN SMJ Having purchased a prime piece of land several years ago, the owners had spent a considerable amount of time planning their new dream home. With two pre-teen children, the family were aware of their need to create separate spaces for the adults and the kids, with each individual spot needing to function on its own but also connect overall to create flow throughout the house. The challenge presented by the client’s brief was to create a kitchen that was the main focal point within the central hub of the home, seamlessly connecting to the living and dining spaces. The kitchen design also needed to accommodate the owner’s list of pre-purchased appliances and two sets of black steel lockers. The inclusion of a bar area for coffee making and drinks preparation is one of the highlights of the main kitchen — and solved the challenge of where to incorporate the lockers, which are topped by the same Dekton countertop material as used on the

kitchen island, so as to create continuation throughout the space. While hardworking, durable work surfaces make the space functional, the room’s modern industrial look is balanced by the use of plywood on the base of the kitchen island, adding an earthy, textured element to the space that ties into the ceiling of the architecturally designed home. A personalised glass backsplash behind the cooktop adds a unique touch of artistic flair to the space, while a ‘secret door’ adds a touch of mystery. As the entire family loves to cook, a generous-sized working scullery was created, with access though a full-length door located between the cooktop and fridge that blends seamlessly with the cabinetry. Making the whole space glow, both the kitchen and scullery also received a very detailed and specific lighting plan utilising strip lighting and downlights to highlight each individual space.

Well-executed lighting brings a refined elegance to the interior, with beautiful glass pendants floating above the bath and adding visual interest. Power points have been deliberately tucked away in drawers to keep benchtops uncluttered, while additional storage has been created in the upper recessed mirror and tall, hidden linen cupboard. Close collaboration with the builder, tiler and trades was imperative throughout the project to ensure the fittings and fixtures were factored into the design early in the process. This ensured a flawless execution with a streamlined finish. The aim of using a delicate touch with carefully chosen materials and finishes to best capture the beauty of this space was achieved through a textured palette, soft and subtle lighting, colour and attention to detail.

ELEGANCE EMMA MORRIS ETERNO DESIGN Designed to inspire clients and attract passers-by, this beautiful architecturally designed interior is perfectly articulated. The brief was to create a luxurious, welcoming interior that captured a sense of style and sophistication with gorgeous, staged spaces for visual and tactile inspiration. The aim was to create a highly functional, practical kitchen internally and externally that exuded a subtle wow factor. Double wooden herringbone panelled doors lead into a sumptuous showroom where a statement island wrapped in seamless oak panelling immediately draws you in. The textured Florim island benchtop with a shark nose edge profile makes a striking contrast to the soft touch of hazed Laminex.

Enhancing the design are the stunning handblown glass pendant lights that drop down over the cantilevered dining table, anchored with a curved leg wrapped in Quartzite stone slats. This is a unique design feature achieved in collaboration with specialised tradespeople. Warm oak timber floors flow seamlessly throughout the space and pair perfectly with the Quartzite back wall benchtop and backsplash. Blum Legrabox, Häfele retractable doors and Miele appliances showcase premium functionality. The kitchen’s stylish finishes and purposefully placed appliances make for a lavish experience. This simplicity of design and attention to detail throughout the space is a superb canvas for each individual client to add their unique personality.

VIVA LA VILLA LEONIE HAMILL CUBE DENTRO Clonbern Estate is a beautifully restored villa positioned on the Awhitu Peninsula. The site provides all the merits of a coastal and country lifestyle, with Awhitu meaning “longing to return”. This sentiment formed the owner’s brief to “indulge family and friends with an exciting kitchen — a space where everyone will long to return, time and time again.” Preserving the villa’s ambience was attained by keeping the original hardwood flooring. The bespoke cabinetry was crafted to align with the character of a bygone era and ties in with new French-door joinery. An acknowledgement of the surrounding setting was imperative, so the marble selected throughout the space contains veining that connects to the ocean, providing a sense of movement and waves. The elegant, curved marble countertop and base breaks

up the large island and provides visual impact. The sink and wall-mounted tapware are discreet but integral components of the design story, keeping the countertop linear and crisp. A marble backsplash contrasts with the island countertop and the bold use of colour and a mixed textural palette creates visual interest. The original awkward layout was redefined by creating just one kitchen wall, resolving the layout issue in order to work with a new open-plan setting. The space now seamlessly flows from kitchen to dining to living and is perfect for entertaining. The central island offers a practical dining arrangement while the scullery provides shelving, extra bench space and storage. Integrated, cutting-edge appliances have been incorporated throughout, ensuring a functional space for every day use.

MID CENTURY KITCHEN TRUDI RABBITTE RABBITTE JOINERY An ’80s brick home designed by architect Michael Geor has been owned by the one family for the last four years. During this time, their little clan grew from three to five, leading to a desire for a bigger, more open kitchen space with a mid-century vibe and better indoor-outdoor flow. The old kitchen layout formed a main thoroughfare through to the bedrooms and bathrooms, leaving the living room cut off and underutilised by the family. In the evenings, they found that they were all spending time in the kitchen and were getting in each other’s way. The homeowners wanted an updated design that respected the architecture of home but that opened up the existing area, creating a functional cooking zone with a subtle ambience. Walls that once divided the kitchen and living areas were removed and the kitchen was shifted into the area

that once served as the living room, creating the desired open-plan living. The owners requested a working pantry to hide away small appliances and desired the sink to be placed in front of the window, as this ensured access to waste and water without incurring huge plumbing costs. This placement created the necessary space to install a large island that had the added benefit of allowing the family to work together to prep meals and bake with plenty of room for everyone. In keeping with the mid-century style, the cabinetry features a walnut veneer finish with elegantly inset edges and solid timber handles that give them a contemporary retro vibe. The island benchtop and counters are a Caesarstone material with a raw concrete look and a smooth, matt finish, giving the kitchen natural appeal with the durability of a modern space.

RURAL AND REGAL PHOEBE CLINTON-BAKER WORKSHOP DESIGNS The goal for this kitchen was to create a space that allows a family with four children to use the environment both independently and collectively. With a large extended family that lives just a stone’s throw away, the kitchen also needed to accommodate frequent guests. A pretty yet practical space was created using materials that are complementary to one another. A soft texture via the matt finish in the benchtop and timber veneer contrasts with the outdoor rural backdrop. The veneer has been carefully wrapped around the ends of the benchtop and rangehood box, with clever attention paid to where the negative detail sits on the oak. LED lighting was also used to add a luxurious feel to the rich and warm timber veneer. Using curves without overdoing them was key to the design of this space. A soft radius on the bench, island and rangehood creates

78 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

an organic feel without buying heavily into the trend. A brass accent in the curved negative detail warms up the palette. The drawers and doors sit slightly higher than the cabinets to frame the negative detail, hiding the join for a seamless look. Symmetry has been created through the use of windows as the backsplash capped by floating shelves of mitred stone. The fridge has been hidden away in a wall of white cabinetry, integrated so as not to take away from the main event, the pastoral view. A practical scullery houses a microwave, sink and wine fridge. Hard-wearing Dekton stone was used to seamlessly wrap the splashback area. The stone was used again on the island benchtop for effortless continuity, forming a large prep space that accommodates seating for ease of use when cooking or eating meals.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to kitchen benchtops and cladding. Here’s how to ensure you choose the right material for your needs Words Aleczander Gamboa When it comes to the kitchen, benchtops are king. From meal preparation to entertaining guests, your kitchen benchtop will certainly go through a lot during its lifetime. As such, it’s paramount you choose the right material to suit your needs and lifestyle. “The process our designers go through when recommending a particular benchtop material is like any other decision,” says Kaitlyn Downs, award-winning designer from Mode Group. “We have an initial meeting to establish what their lifestyle is, which subsequently influences their preferences and ultimately the materials

84 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

we recommend for their new kitchen.” Meanwhile, Belinda Worden, co-founder and director of Austaron Surfaces, explains it’s paramount to have a good understanding of the general names of products versus the brand names. Getting the details correct during the specifying of selected products will be one less headache for you too. “Designers and customers continue to refer to the brand as a name of the product as they don’t understand they are using brands,” explains Belinda. “It’s a little confusing, but it’s what I am familiar with from being on the road as one of

our company representatives for many years. Reconstituted stone or E-Stone (product name) is referred to as Caesarstone (brand name). Solid Surface (product name) is referred to as Corian (brand name).” There are many materials to choose from, with porcelain, marble and granite just some of the common examples. With such an exhaustive list to consider, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed by it all. The key to choosing the right one is doing your research and understanding the unique qualities each surface material offers.

PERFECT PORCELAIN

Kone Mix porcelain collection by Atlas Plan. smartstone.com.au

Porcelain benchtops are fast becoming a popular choice among homeowners who want versatility and durability in one. “Porcelain is heat resistant, so it’s good for clients who want to use the same material on their splashback and their benchtop,” says Kaitlyn. “It is thinner than engineered stone, which is great for clients wanting to achieve an architectural finish. As it is so fine, we ensure we use substrate to support the stone and prevent chipping.” But the benefits of porcelain don’t end there. Due to its low porosity, porcelain is almost impermeable, which means it’s strongly resistant to absorbing liquids that can leave unwanted stains. It also has high UV resistance, making it an ideal material for kitchens where natural sunlight is abundant as the benchtop surface won’t fade over time.

MARVELLOUS MARBLE Marble is part of the natural stone family. This material is renowned for its high-end look and style, with its unique veins giving any kitchen a luxurious aesthetic. Due to its natural variations, and each one being different from the other, this material is a top choice for those who want to get really personal with their selection. In other words, you choose a marble benchtop based on its unique properties rather than the slab itself. As for its functionality, marble is cool in temperature and does not conduct heat. However, it’s important to note that natural stones are generally more porous, making them susceptible to staining from food or drink spills. Furthermore, while durable, marble is not completely resistant to scratches and markings — a characteristic that is synonymous with all natural stones. Due to its porous qualities, this beautiful material is generally not recommended for families with young children or a keen chef who loves to make a mess in the kitchen.

ENGINEERED STONE

Terrazzo. River House by KA Design Studio. Image Tom Furgeson. kadesignstudio.com.au

Often made from a combination of crushed stone like quartz and resin, engineered stone is currently the most versatile option available on the market. A man-made material, engineered stone comes with a range of benefits including being easy to clean, durable against wear and tear and resistant to staining. If you’re a cook who works with raw vegetables, fish or meat in the kitchen, engineered stone is an excellent choice due to its non-porous qualities. This means the benchtop won’t absorb bacteria into its pores, ensuring safe food handling in the kitchen for many years to come. Best of all, this material requires very little upkeep and doesn’t need regular sealing like natural stones.

FEATURE

TREMENDOUS TIMBER Timber can give your benchtops and cladding a warm and welcoming feel. It’s the perfect choice for those who are eco-conscious and want to be more sustainable in the kitchen, as timber is a renewable resource that can be both recycled and sustainably forested. What sets timber apart from the rest is that it actually gets better as it ages, enhancing your kitchen’s personality with very minimal upkeep. You’re also spoiled for choice with different timber species like timber veneer or solid timber. “We usually opt for a timber veneer as it offers all the benefits of timber, but is more for cabinetry purposes. There are many different timber species to choose from, which gives clients the freedom to select based on colour and grain variants that best suit their kitchen style,” says Kaitlyn. That said, timber is still prone to scratches and scorch marks without the right care. The good news is that any damage caused can be easily repaired. Simply sand back the surface, then refinish with oil or polyurethane and it’s good as new.

SOLID SURFACE If you like the look of natural stone but dislike the level of upkeep required, solid surface benchtops could be for you. These are typically constructed from non-porous man-made acrylic and designed to mimic the appearance of stone. A popular product choice for this material is Staron Solid Surfaces from Austaron Surfaces. Non-porous qualities ensure no stain is ever permanent, making this surface hygienic and incredibly easy to clean. This is especially beneficial if you or your guests are avid drinkers, whether that be coffee, tea or wine. What’s unique about Staron Solid Surfaces is that the surface gets renewed with every wipe and clean. It does not have any finishing polishes or sealers applied — it is the same solid non-porous material throughout its thickness. After years of use, it can simply be re-sanded and restored back to its original condition.

Custom concrete island by Blend Concrete Design. blendconcretedesign.com.au

CONTEMPORARY CONCRETE Concrete is another one that’s growing in popularity, often being the material of choice for homeowners looking for a bold and industrial feel. Concrete is naturally very dense and due to its extremely hard surface and thickness, it’s less prone to chipping as opposed to natural stone like quartz, granite or marble benchtops. Moreover, when correctly sealed, concrete can also withstand heat, making it a perfect material if you’re an enthusiastic cook who loves to create searing hot meals in pots and pans. Last but not least, maintenance is practically effortless. Simply use a mild soap with warm water when wiping down and it’s all good to go.

THE BEAUTY OF THE

BREW BAR

A dedicated coffee and tea station at home is a luxury indulgence no longer limited to professional baristas. Creating the perfect coffee bar can be as simple as incorporating the right machinery, products and layout Words Catherine Falalis Whether you fancy a latte, a long black or a creamy cappuccino, many would agree that indulging in that first sip, first thing in the morning is one of life’s simple pleasures. It’s a small moment to be enjoyed before the hustle and bustle of the day begins. “In the face of adversity, everyday rituals and routines make us feel grounded and more appreciative of the little things,” reflects Tennille Burnup of Tennille Joy Interiors. “When one cannot function without a coffee first thing in the morning, the coffee machine becomes their shrine. It’s an intoxicating object that satisfies a range of senses and provides a get-up-and-go mentality for the coffee connoisseur.” As an interior designer, Tennille often receives requests from clients for help to create the ultimate coffee station. She designed this coffee nook with retractive doors for a homeowner

who is passionate about their morning coffee. “It can be opened up, coffee can be tailored to the owner’s exact specifications, and it’s housed with pride in its own sacred space, providing deep contentment to the homeowners,” says Tennille. Placing the coffee machine in the centre of the dedicated space is a great way to hero the main attraction. When considering your layout, its pays to think about whether you would also like to incorporate some shelving or drawers to store mugs, spoons and cannisters. Nadine Norman from Espresso Company Australia discloses an important layout consideration for every coffee station. “Have the coffee grinder positioned between 5-10cm away from the coffee machine to avoid moisture from the steam arm,” she advises. “It’s always a great idea to have a drawer underneath or near your set-up as it’s great storage for accessories,

cups and cleaning products. This is a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution. If you are looking to plumb your machine in order to source water directly instead of from the reservoir, make sure there is a mains water connection close by and be prepared to cut a hole in the bench or countertop for the hoses.” It is always helpful to ask for an installation guide if considering this option. Most home espresso machines run from a 10-amp power supply, so close proximity to a power point for your machine is essential. “We also see some beautiful coffee stations with well-thought-out shelves and hooks located above the coffee bar for an efficient use of space, complementing the design of the coffee station and aesthetic of the machine,” says Nadine. “And always allow enough room for the essentials and smaller accessories that you will use each time you make a coffee.”

With so many options out there when it comes to coffee machines, it can be tough to decide which one is the ideal fit. According to Colin Jones, category expert at Appliances Online, the best place to start is to understand your household’s needs. “Does your household drink coffee? What are their coffee preferences? What type of coffee do they drink? A coffee machine is a great appliance to keep in this dedicated space as it will help your family with their caffeine fix, as well as provide a sophisticated appliance in your home,” he explains.

CAPSULE COFFEE MACHINES If you are someone who only drinks coffee every now and again, Colin recommends looking at a cost-effective machine such as a capsule/POD machine. These require a separate purchase of capsules that can be placed into the machine and come in an array of flavours with pre-ground coffee that has been vacuum-sealed to hold in the freshness. These machines are also easy to clean and maintain.

TOP TIP Make sure to check what type of capsules your machine takes as it may be a specific one, and consider buying enough to last you a couple of months.

AUTOMATIC COFFEE MACHINES Colin says automatic coffee machines are great for individuals who need a coffee every morning as they are simple to use and can deliver a great espresso, cappuccino or flat white in seconds. For these machines, you will need a supply of coffee beans and the machine will grind them and froth the milk automatically. You even have the option of customising your coffee experience by altering the coffee strength, grind texture, temperature and coffee volume. These machines require a simple clean after use to ensure their maintenance.

TOP TIP Buying good-quality coffee beans will make all the difference to your brew. Make sure to always store your coffee beans in an airtight container away from any heat, light and moisture. If you have access to a vacuum sealer, these work well in retaining the bean flavour. If you

98 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

want to change it up a little and experiment, you can try to mix a couple of your favourite beans together to create a new flavour. You can even try spicing up your coffee flavour by adding things like honey, jasmine, chocolate, or top it with whipped cream, chocolate, ground cinnamon or nutmeg.

FEATURE

MANUAL COFFEE MACHINES Manual coffee machines allow you to unleash your inner cafe barista, enabling you to craft delicious coffees to help you get through the day. Colin explains that one of the benefits of manual coffee machines is that they can be used with both ground coffee and coffee beans, depending on whether your chosen machine features a coffee grinder. With built-in steam wands or milk frothers, you can cater to all your frothing needs, whether you’re making a flat white or a macchiato. They are perfect for those who like their coffee brewed a certain way, with a particular preference in flavour and texture. These machines require the most amount of maintenance as they will need to be cleaned after each use.

ENERGY

As more renovators and designers look for earth-friendly alternatives in their kitchens and bathrooms, we’re seeing more sustainable options in the market than ever before Words Adriana Thani It’s amazing to see more homes that look good while still being kind to our shared planet, but which are the best items to put on your wish list? Discover the energy-efficient appliances and accessories that will help your next kitchen or bathroom reno score high on sustainability.

SHOP WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN MIND With so many products out there, it may feel overwhelming to find the ones that are truly kind to the planet. Fortunately, clear guidelines exist that help you narrow down your options and find the best appliances for your home.

For most kitchen and bathroom appliances, the star rating is a good way to gauge how efficient a model is when compared to similar models. Plus, it’s so simple to understand — the more stars an appliance has, the more energy efficient it is. In fact, while most products are given between one and six stars, energy-efficient technology has improved so much that you’ll find some appliances with a whole second row of stars. These appliances can have up to 10 stars, making them some of the most energy-efficient products you can find. With those kind of options on offer, its worth it to do your reasearch to find the right product for your eco-needs.

You can also look at an appliance’s energy consumption to figure out how energy-efficient this is. The energy consumption number is based on standardised testing, which is conducted in line with the official Australian and New Zealand Standard. The lower the energy consumption number, the more energy-efficient it is. Since both kitchens and bathrooms have wet zones, it’s also important to know about water efficiency as well. Fixtures such as tapware, faucets and showers are measured using the WELS star rating, where more stars indicate more water efficiency. In general, fixtures with a four- to six-star WELS rating will be the most waterefficient options for your kitchen and bathroom. Aside from being good for the environment, making a conscious decision to opt for energyefficient items in your kitchen and bathroom also reduces your energy bill over time. So it’s good for the planet and your budget! There’s also another important element to consider when you’re shopping for eco-friendly

102 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

appliances: e-waste. “When shopping for new eco-friendly appliances, it is important to take into consideration how your old appliance will be disposed of,” says Colin Jones, category expert at Appliances Online. “E-waste is the largestgrowing waste category in Australia. Fortunately, our legendary drivers at Winning Services collect our customers’ old appliances when their new item is delivered and return the old appliances to our distribution centres for recycling. They also recycle the packaging of your appliance that contains materials such as polystyrene.” Whether you’re thinking about star ratings or disposal options, one thing is clear: being intentional when shopping for items for your kitchen or bathroom reno is the key to prioritising sustainability and eco-friendliness, so it’s important to do your research.

CLEVER COOKTOPS According to Colin, induction cooktops are more energy efficient than gas, electric coil,

ceramic or hotplate cooktops. It’s also worth noting that since there are no open fires, they are a great deal safer, also making them ideal for households with children. “Induction cooktops are available in a variety of sizes to suit any kitchen and often have safety features to protect you and your family,” says Colin. The way induction technology works is by generating heat directly into your cookware, as opposed to heating the cooktop first in order to heat your cookware. This technology helps you achieve rapid heating and efficient energy use. The Miele Full-surface Induction cooktop range, for example, offers a host of features that include TempControl, which guarantees consistently perfect cooking temperatures, intelligent pan detection that gives you flexible operation as you move about your cooking surface, as well as a booster function for rapid heating and SilentMove to quiet operation.

DISH IT OUT “There’s a common misconception that it is more energy efficient to hand-wash your dishes over using the dishwasher,” Colin points out. “Rinsing your dishes by hand uses approximately nine litres of water every minute, and combined with filling up your sink with hot water to wash your dishes, the whole process could use approximately 60 litres of water in total. Meanwhile, depending on the brand and energy / water efficiency of your unit, your dishwasher may only be using 6.9 to 15 litres for a full load of dishes.” Miele’s efficient EcoPower technology ensures efficient use of resources thanks to the cleverly designed water supply. With a 4.5-star energy rating and 6.0-star WELS rating, Miele’s G 7919 SCI XXL AUTODOS OBSW dishwasher is one of the most efficient dishwashers on the market. Perfectly designed for discreet mounting inside cabinetry, Schweigen’s UM1170-9S undermount rangehood fits perfectly into 300mm-deep cabinetry and is perfect for those who want a truly seamless look to their kitchen. The Schweigen Isodrive® motors are among the most energy-efficient in the market, requiring just 57 watts of power to run. It also features soft-touch controls and digital display, five speed levels, 15-minute auto shut-off timer and LED lighting, all of which score high in energy-efficiency.

Colin mentions that a food waste disposer can be an environmentally responsible approach to food waste that keeps your kitchen clean and removes smells and bacteria that would otherwise inhabit your kitchen bin. “Food scraps, or vegetable and fruit scraps, can easily be placed into the food waste disposer for easy and hygienic disposal in order to ensure these scraps are not ending up in landfill,” says Colin. The InSinkErator Evolution 100 food waste disposer grinds food waste into small particles and flushes it into your sewerage system. Due to the Quiet Collar Sink Baffle, Anti-Vibration Mount and robust insulation, noise and vibrations are minimised so you can easily clean up your kitchen mess in peace.

FANCY FLUSH Nowhere in the home is water efficiency more important than in the bathroom. Surprisingly, toilets are an element of the bathroom that can use quite a large amount of water over time. When you flush a toilet, an outlet valve opens to allow water to enter the toilet pan and as the water level drops in the cistern, this triggers the water inlet valves to open and start refilling the toilet.

Unfortunately, most toilets have inlet valves that start refilling before the outlet valve has fully closed and when this occurs, it allows a small amount of water to escape through the outlet valve opening. Oli Inwall toilet cisterns, however, feature a delayed inlet valve mechanism that stops this from happening altogether, helping you save on water usage. This can lead to a water reduction of up to 500mL per flush!

TIMBER

A unique collaboration between Winter Architecture and Field Office Architecture has resulted in this contemporary timber kitchen that melds form and simplicity. A modern interpretation of a Victorian home, the kitchen design celebrates old and new, embracing contemporary materials in a traditional Victorian structure. The kitchen features seamless timber joinery, durable concrete floors and grey accents to complement the light-timber grain. Restraint is key to balancing both form and style, with minimal use of hardware on the timber cabinets to emphasise the clean vertical lines. Drawing the eye upward, the vertical lines simulate height and extend the visual plane of the kitchen for generous space. Matching the cabinets are

thin timber ceiling panels to further the vertical lines of space, with the warm timber establishing a comfortable feel within the minimalist aesthetic. The timber scheme is the hero of the kitchen and avoids being dated by embracing simplicity, reducing accessories to the bare minimum and integrating the appliances with subtle grey accents. The grey granite island is an eyecatching contrast amid the dominant timber styling and creates visual interest. With a design brief centred on function and form, the owners wanted a social family home with large open spaces that encouraged movement. Maintaining respect for the compact Victorian structure, functional spaces like the kitchen, dining and living room were combined for an open-plan feel, comfortably seating up to 12 people.

113 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

ED'S FAVE The expert merging of timber and clean lines for a timeless yet modern feel

The talented teams at Winter Architecture and Field Office Architecture approached the design with similar commitments to simplicity and form, strategically dividing the functional areas to compensate for the compact site. The result is a generous amount of living space with abundant seating, ample storage, and the seamless integration of appliances nestled among the floor-to-ceiling timber cabinets. The timber materials have a modest warmth and refinement and play into traditional notions of Victorian architecture. While still timeless, new timbers create a fresh twist on classic style sensibilities, with durable long-lasting wear perfect for most family homes. Here nature combines with modernity for a celebration of family living, emphasising movement and flexibility, while paying tribute to the traditional Victorian form with contemporary materials.

LIGHT AND BRIGHT Inspired by the classic Shaker style, the mix of clean lines and light colours adds a contemporary feel to this designer kitchen by Smith & Smith Kitchens. The custom canopy and recessed cabinets in textured green accentuate the smooth transition to the ceiling to expand the area for visual appeal. With a glossy subway tile splashback and contrasting gold hardware, old meets new in unexpected ways in this space. The previous kitchen reflected a deeper colour palette that enclosed the room. The owners wanted a new kitchen that was light and airy, but with a yesteryear style to reflect the character of the 140-year-old terrace home. A soft colour palette of grey and green offers a twist to a traditional white colour scheme, effortlessly bouncing light without diminishing warmth. Timeless yet classic, this Smith & Smith Kitchen hits the right style notes for a contemporary Shaker kitchen. LOVELY IN

WHITE

The owners of this abode needed a new kitchen that was to be relocated from their upstairs quarters to the lower level of the home. The new kitchen needed to work with the existing exposed brick and all the natural colours and textures of its surrounds. With little to no bench space or storage, these elements had to be addressed to create a functional cooking environment. Its transformation now allows for baking, meal preparation, a spot to sit and work — as well as ample room for the grandkids to help nan and pop with the cooking.

124 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Generous storage drawers and cabinets have been included, making cleaning a breeze as everything has a place. Despite an existing beam that had to be worked with, the new kitchen has achieved a bright palette in all its white glory, and clean lines that are pleasing to the eye. All the newly selected finishes pose an effortless and natural atmosphere that complements the original materials of the home. Design Tracie Platz Build Timo Veijalainen

MODERN SHAKER

STORAGE

Clever storage solutions take front and centre in this contemporary Shaker-style kitchen by Rosemount Kitchens. The previous kitchen was u-shaped and had restricted movement. It also had a ‘90s colour palette of beige and lilac and a dated feel. The owners wanted to capitalise on the unused space with a redesign featuring high cabinetry, a freestanding island and extra seating in the kitchen’s corner. The extra-high Shaker cabinetry with a ladder and rail system is a stunning feature that draws the eye while offering a practical way to reach high items. Polytec cabinetry and a smoked-grey mirror splashback add visual interest and brighten the room, while Caesarstone benchtops tie the colour scheme together with a cool white base. Black Kethy handles are delicate additions with a hint of sophistication to match the smooth ladder railing. A tribute to smart storage and modern living, this Rosemount Kitchens design offers a fresh take on the decorative Shaker style.

LIGHT AND

DARK

This bright and welcoming kitchen is big on style. The previous kitchen was inadequate for a growing family, so the brief from the owners was “something that is practical, streamlined and looks fantastic!” Smith & Smith Kitchens put on their thinking caps and devised a plan for a functional and smart kitchen, then grabbed their tool belts and went to work. Special design features in this kitchen are fridge and dishwashers that are completely integrated. The box containing the rangehood is also the same colour as the darker bench, with both dark and light colours accentuating their differences and adding depth and interest. The main design considerations were accommodating a stone vertical panel behind the island and a seating area. Ducting the rangehood through the wall so the top could

be uplit was a challenge, but by problem solving this was overcome. Another challenge was fitting a large fridge and stove, pantry, sink and dishwashers into one wall of limited length and again, good design has made that possible. The cabinet doors and panels in laminate Polytec Crisp White Legato and Cinder Venette have created a beautiful finish in the kitchen. These are teamed with Castella Urbane dullbrushed nickel handles. Black Häfele Loox LED strip lighting above the island also features. WONDERLAND IN WHITE The owners of this majestic abode were looking to upgrade their kitchen, moving from a standard off-the-shelf-style aesthetic to something that would better reflect the beauty of their home and improve its functionality for the family. To meet the client’s desire for a classic design, the talented team at Inset Kitchens, with Ed Mamrot as designer, delivered a contemporary yet traditional space with plenty of bespoke touches to give it the richness it deserved. A custom-built canopy with decorative corbels

130 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

creates an eye-catching feature over the cooktop, while ornate cornice mouldings crafted for the space elevate the overall look of the room and give it some of the traditional gravitas the owners wanted. Scalloped plinths and panelling on the island, which is rendered in an elegant charcoal grey, add detail that anchors the space and ties together the room’s custom architectural features. Atop the island, a solid piece of spectacular black granite adds additional texture and movement to the space.

Shaker-style square-panelled cabinetry is hung in stepped heights that add visual interest and make the most of the space to create better storage. Modern hardware fittings and storage systems were integrated into the joinery to ensure optimal functionality. Modern appliances with a classic look provide the technology of today in a classic style that will stand the test of time. Further increasing the practicality of the space, which was a key aspect for the clients, a butler’s pantry/laundry room was created

Cracked stone benchtops, an incomplete paint job from years ago and insufficient storage prompted the owners of this Hawthorn East apartment to seek a total kitchen makeover. Keeping the bones of the space intact, the team at Summit Kitchens upgraded the features, finessed the finishes and refined the overall aesthetic to create an elevated and user-friendly space flooded with light and full of storage. EARTHLY

DELIGHTS

Part of a unique building collaboration, this stunning kitchen by Kitchens by CJ is the showpiece of the Rathmines Project. A community collaboration project developed by BuilderHer8, the Rathmines Project is a significant example of what can be achieved when you think outside the box. Designed by Ben Callery Architects, this home was built with sustainability in mind. The interior of the house was the vision of designer Alison Lewis. Boasting a warm, inviting and texturally abundant aesthetic, the Rathmines Project reflects the artistic flair associated with this

neighbourhood in Melbourne’s north side. Ably demonstrating this interior ethos is the delicious kitchen created by Kitchens by CJ. Welcoming an opportunity to work with a local designer, Kitchens by CJ was delighted to be invited to join this unique project, as it reflects the company’s passion for collaborating with creative beings in a bid to achieve a new vision in home building. The open-plan layout of the cooking zone abuts the living and dining spaces of the home. Edging the space is a large island with a unique curved feature. The large stone overhang at the

front of the island creates the ideal space for additional seating, curving at one end to form an arch that is inlaid with timber to add visual appeal. This timber element is reflective of the superb joinery that lines one wall from floor-to-ceiling, providing plenty of storage and hiding away large appliances. The soft, warm brown of the timber cabinetry picks up the earthy inclusions in the countertops, tying the neutral palette together. With entire joinery fitouts becoming a speciality of Kitchens by CJ, this spectacular array of customprofile cabinetry is an excellent example of the quality craftsmanship produced by the company.

WE LOVE An array of natural stone forms square mosaic tiles in a warm cream tone that covers the rangehood and back wall of the kitchen. The texture introduced through the tile gives the room greater visual depth, without taking away from eye-catching moments like the greenpainted arch leading to the butler’s pantry. Lined with the same timber cabinetry and earthy stone as the main kitchen, with open shelving lining the upper walls, the butler’s pantry’s aesthetic represents a seamless flow from the work zone to the main kitchen.

The clean lines, neutral colour palette and heavily textured material choices combine to form an impressive kitchen that is everything a modern kitchen should be in terms of functionality, with an earthy yet sophisticated appeal that generates a warm and welcoming invitation to come, cook and enjoy. SIMPLE AND

CLEAN DESIGN Although we see many unique and creative kitchen styles in this magazine, sometimes you just can’t beat the classics. The team at Whisk Kitchens have redesigned this once outdated space to create a brighter area that invites serenity and happiness. Prior to the revamp, the kitchen consisted of mixed and matched coloured timber doors and drawers. To open up the space and bring style consistency to every corner, Whisk Kitchens opted for a predominantly white colour palette. This brightened up the area, emphasising spaciousness while inviting subtle vibrancy. Instead of feeling closed off like before, the new design invites you to engage with the kitchen wholeheartedly. Additionally, the white shades are balanced with the natural wood tones from the flooring and black sink, all of which work in harmony to create a luxurious aesthetic.

There’s a lot to love about this kitchen, which oozes classic and timeless style. First, every drawer has a soft-close function for silent closing — an ideal feature especially if you’re a latenight cook. Second, the splashback showcases attention to detail with its stylish hexagon patterns. Third, the LED lighting maximises energy efficiency to ensure long sessions in the kitchen without the exorbitant energy bill. But what truly captures our attention is the beautiful benchtop, made from Quantum Quartz Monte Bianco. The unique veins truly elevate the design aspect of this room, adding the perfect contrast to the rest of the clean and organised surroundings. The waterfall ends on each side give way to extra space underneath for bar stools, making the island feature the perfect place to entertain guests or share a meal with the family. WELCOMING

& WARM

The expansive size of this newly renovated kitchen makes a luxurious statement in this beach-side home. The double-galley style and large island bench make this space an entertainer’s dream. The previous kitchen was dated in a timberlook laminate and was an incredibly cramped and small space. There was a disjointed breakfast bar section that cut off the kitchen from the rest of the living area, making the kitchen feel closed in. The owner wanted to open up the space to make it feel more integrated into the adjacent living room, so this became one of the main design considerations. Increasing the amount of storage space was also important, as there was hardly any room for all the kitchen utensils, food and appliances.

144 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Häfele storage solutions were used and include a Portero detergent organiser, Hailo pantry box and Hailo laundry carrier. They work to keep the internals of the cabinets organised and tidy, while the use of inner drawers by Grass doubles the amount of drawer storage available, ensuring no space goes to waste. Light was also a major factor to consider as the configuration of the kitchen offered hardly any natural light to enter. By knocking out the laundry wall and installing a new window which extends the entire length of the sink-run, the amount of light in the space has increased significantly, making the kitchen feel more fresh, airy and spacious. Classic monochrome is the hero here, with matt white cabinetry contrasting beautifully against the dark timber floors and black

appliances and accessories. Pops of colour were created by using Laminex in Natural Walnut to add warmth and character to the room. The sleek integrated handle rail, and the use of Blum Aventos bifold door-lift systems for the overhead cabinets, enhance the streamlined design of this modern minimalist kitchen. Listening carefully to a client brief and going above and beyond to exceed expectations is what Dezign Kitchens does best, and the company has built a reputable brand over many years. It comes as no surprise that Dezign Kitchens has been selected as the 2022 National Winner for Remarkable Customer Service at the Australian Achiever Awards. THAT SENSE OF

SPACE

A dream in white, this modern shaker-style kitchen is a far cry from what it looked like prereno. The old kitchen looked dated and had limited and awkward access to the pantry area. The brief for Premier Kitchens was clear: make it entertainment ready. That meant quite a lot of things. The first of them was creating an open and spacious kitchen with loads of benchtop and storage space. The second was giving it an elegant feel. Then, practical considerations kicked in. The pantry space had to be increased and turned into a walk-in one. There was also a need for space to put appliances away to keep the main kitchen clear.

146 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Hence, what you see now is a cook’s paradise with ample benchtop space. The big walk-in butler’s pantry provides even more storage for appliances and food, leaving the kitchen clean and free of clutter. The gorgeous brass Lo and Co handles lend sophistication and style to the space. Needless to say, the kitchen is now an amazing space that combines the outdoors and is worthy of socialising with friends and family. The fact that it looks so great is an added bonus. MODERN ELEGANCE FOR THE

EVERYDAY FOODIE Transforming a dated, cramped and poorly designed kitchen into a light and bright space with maximised storage, increased counter space and chef’s appliances was no mean feat for the team at Designline Kitchens & Bathrooms. The owners of this formerly dark and very impractical kitchen wanted an elegant but functional space to indulge their passion for food in all its forms. The design includes two sizeable chef’s fridges, a wine cellar, additional extractor fan and plenty of space for every pot, pan, peeler, grater and slicer imaginable. To create more space, reduce cleaning and keep the lines simple, ceiling-height cabinets

150 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

in vivid white were chosen to replace the formerly wooden Laminex panels. Extending the customised cabinetry to meet the ceiling creates a more streamlined look and allowed the storage areas to be completely reimagined. Each drawer, cupboard and appliance’s position and location was well thought out to optimise both space and usability. Designed to be timeless, the modern elegance and outstanding practicality of this kitchen make it perfect for every occasion, including family lunches, dinner parties and large events. SPLENDID To design and build a kitchen with wow factor is no easy feat, but the Danishborn Gamborg brothers from DK Design Kitchens are no strangers to creating a kitchen zone that is at one with an entire living environment. Scandinavian design is what they do best — a style that simply never dates or goes out of fashion. The mantra “less is more” is often used when it comes to a Scandi aesthetic, but this doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing exciting flair. The two existing reclaimed timber columns were the main consideration for this kitchen space, each offering an intriguing point of difference while still seamlessly working with the Scandi style. The combination of warm timbers, beautiful textures, neutral colours and

152 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

SCANDI natural stones sing in harmony to create one symphony. Minimising clutter and joint lines where possible, this design allows the homeowners to breathe freely in their kitchen without feeling overwhelmed. DK Design Kitchens prides itself on its quality designs and premium construction. A good-quality kitchen that has been well maintained should last 25 to 35 years. Throughout those years, a design that does not become outdated but rather stands the test of time is integral. This is what the team at DK Design Kitchens choose to focus on for every project, ultimately providing exceptional-quality kitchens with thought and innovation that lasts. MODERN

COMFORTS

This industrial-inspired design by ThinkDzine features generous storage and luxe materials for a dramatic yet modern kitchen. Pre-renovation, the kitchen and dining area had a beige, ‘80s style appearance with a closedin feel due to the awkward positioning of the angled windows. With a design focused on open-plan entertaining and ample storage, the windows were squared-off to widen the space, making the kitchen the centrepiece of the home. Withing the cooking zone, a floating island with a porcelain benchtop offers sleek storage solutions while the strategic placement of the gallery

154 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

streamlines the work zone. This was achieved by placing the fridge and pantry in the gallery section and cleverly hiding appliances with a retractable door system. Well-known appliances include Smeg and Samsung, while durable finishes complete this bold modern kitchen. Cesar cabinets feature in structural lacquer and dark-oak veneer with industrial textured paint. This kitchen truly is an ode to smart design and functionality and takes advantage of the elegance of modern simplicity. Design Dean Welsh Build ThinkDzine Interiors

This house, designed by Di Henshall, was inspired by her love of Palm Springs — sunny, clean and streamlined with a nod to the rat pack era of the 1960s. The colours in the kitchen reflect the greenery of the surrounding landscape. The homeowners were looking for a kitchen with the wow factor and this offering is a stunning example of good design and beautiful finishes. It has lots on offer that would serve a busy household and it’s perfect for entertaining family and friends. The design is virtually maintenance free, clean and inviting, built with hardwearing work surfaces that would stand the test of time. The Staron sink faces the pool and is seamlessly integrated, nestled into a wide cool benchtop. The adjoining scullery shares the same benchtop material for continuity. The scullery also houses

PROJECT

INDUSTRIAL This chic and functional kitchen proves you can achieve elegant design and flawless finishes even if you’re on a budget. The brief was for a clean, modern kitchen featuring dark tones, some wood detailing and a semiindustrial aesthetic. The inexpensive new build features poured concrete benchtops and slatted wooden accents on the end panels and pantry door. The barn-like pantry entrance with exposed track amplifies the utilitarian feel, while the dark neutral palette allows the simple design to shine without interference from fussy, bright or intricate elements. Warm overhead lighting softens the space somewhat, but doesn’t take away from the overall look and feel. Physical constraints meant the kitchen design had to incorporate exposed steel beams criss-crossing the walls and a central supporting post. Choosing to highlight these features, rather than trying to hide them, means that instead of detracting from the

160 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

CHIC

integrity of the design, they feel authentic and enhance the industrial energy. In order the maximise all-important bench space and create a workable pantry area, the island bench took on a slightly irregular shape to accommodate the central supporting post. The poured concrete benchtops cascade into a polished concrete floor, creating visual symmetry and a seamless transition. Innovation based on physical and budgetary constraints and creative solutions to accommodate a modern lifestyle has resulted in a kitchen that is edgy, interesting and inviting. Enigma Interior’s commitment to the client and personal approach is evident in everything from the initial design to the finishing touches and premium cabinetry. The end result is a kitchen that sits harmoniously both in its physical space and within the larger home design. It’s a space the owners seek out often and truly cherish. BREATHTAKING BATHROOM

EXTRAVAGANZA

Renovating five full bathrooms and a powder room on the same property at the same time is both a dream and a nightmare. It provides the opportunity to redesign totally, but a complete makeover also presents significant logistical challenges. Taking on this demanding project, the team at JG Bathrooms were able to deliver five beautifully finished bathrooms within a tight timeframe. Located on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, this state-of-the-art home is expansive and luxurious.

176 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Each bathroom has its own unique layout and style. From a construction point of view, the double-brick house was a challenge to work with and meant extra steps to comply with the design brief. Stud walls were added to accommodate in-wall toilet cisterns, shower niches and make the most of available space. In the end, the extra effort was worth it as the result is perfectly integrated, cohesive bathrooms that sit harmoniously within the home’s overall style. Design JG Bathrooms

The homeowners wanted a space that was simple and timeless, as well as beautiful and modern. The resulting bathroom by Crystal Bathrooms is in a class of its own. There were several design considerations; among them was the need for a beautiful freestanding bathtub, which is positioned against a window. With natural light streaming through, there is a connection to the outdoors and the views beyond. The freestanding bath is the ultimate statement piece in this bathroom, with the insert nearby providing space to store bathroom products. The completed project is a far cry from the previous bathroom design, which lacked vitality. The inclusion of new fittings and fixtures against a crisp-white backdrop has now created a sophisticated space.

RESORT-STYLE BATHING WITH A

ROMAN TWIST Modernising existing features can go either way. It can bring them to life or completely drown them. Luckily, in this case, the kitsch ‘90s Roman features, which are repeated throughout the home, were preserved and lend a unique and unexpected element to this bathroom design. In a nod to Roman aesthetics, the black marble tiles are the true star of the show, giving the space a masculine, resort-style feeling that is timeless. The classic Roman post features were freshened up with a lick of vivid white paint to create a high-contrast, classic black-and-white palette that will never go out of style. To create a sense of space, the vanity was intentionally made narrower and a frameless glass shower was selected. Mirrored cabinets reflect the feature tiles, making it seem as if the cabinets aren’t really there at all. Design Alan Schull Build Kitchen Shop QLD

THE FINISHING

TOUCH

There’s a lot to love about the Heritage Series from Bertazzoni. This elegantly classic range is known for its cocktail of past-meets-present style backed up by a quality interior and advanced engineering. It seems only fitting that enamel is one of the finishes available for this range. This timeless finish was inspired by the original wood-burning stoves that Antonio and Napoleone Bertazzoni built in the 1930s, when durability was absolutely crucial to an oven’s success. Today, this newer enamel finish once again stands the test of time. It also makes your cooking surfaces easy to clean, resulting in a product that looks great and will make your life easier too. Black Décor is the signature colour for the new Heritage Series ovens.

The recognisable 1930s look is completed by carefully considered stainless-steel and chrome or copper details that fit in with any contemporary or elegantly classic kitchen. This finish is available in the Heritage Series 60cm oven with Thermometer, 60cm Oven Pyro/Steam, 45cm Combi Microwave or 45cm Combi Steam, allowing you to achieve that stylish Heritage look while enjoying the benefits of modern and convenient cooking appliances.

MINIMALIST

MIXERS

Specially designed to meet the needs of any household, Phoenix Tapware has expanded its Designer Sink Mixers collection to include four new products: Ester, Deja, Erlen and Linq. Seamlessly fusing geometric design with a delicately curved lever, the Ester Sink Mixer Squareline is ideal for any contemporary kitchen. It also features energy-saving Cold Start cartridge technology, which allows only cold water to be delivered when the tap is operated from the traditional mid-lever position. This means hot water only flows if the handle is moved to the left hot position, saving energy by avoiding the unnecessary heating of water. This model is designed in Australia and features a new swivel spout for enhanced functionality, with 200mm spout reach, and is available in three finishes.

202 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

Deja features soft-curved forms and a dual-function, pull-out hand piece with switch, making food preparation and cleaning the sink a breeze. It also has a fixed pin lever and swivel spout for enhanced functionality. It’s available in three classic finishes so you’re sure to find a style to suit the design of your kitchen or laundry space. Erlen is designed for kitchens with timeless minimalism at their core. The round profile of the body, combined with the squareline spout has a language of dynamic movement, while the recessed aerator contributes to its sleek appearance. Functionality comes to the forefront with the swivel spout, which has a 200mm reach capability. This mixer is currently available in chrome, brushed nickel and matt black, with two more durable finishes soon to be added to the Erlen collection.

The classic stainless-steel finish of the Linq Pull Out Sink Mixer delivers a beautiful, soft, organic feel to a very practical mixer. Linq has a dualfunction, pull-out hand piece with a switch to alternate between the two functions. The 316-marine-grade stainless-steel construction means this sink mixer will function equally as well indoors as it will in your outdoor kitchen, with a lifetime warranty available on the finish.

Q&A: THE STONE-COLD TRUTH Nathan Karpenko, owner and managing director of CAV’ART Designer Stone, is an expert in quality natural stone and porcelain. With more than 15 years of experience, he shares some professional advice on the beauty and benefits of natural stone. Kitchen & Bathroom Quarterly: Tell us how you got started in the natural stone industry. Nathan Karpenko: I actually studied geology in school and inevitably ended up working with natural stone. I started in 2003 after 13 years in the hotel industry, but it was last year I decided to go out on my own and start CAV’ART Designer Stone. I really had a passion for natural stone and helping people. I could see there was an opening in the industry and saw myself doing something different and daring.

206 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

KBQ: What are some benefits of using natural stone? NK: The main thing with natural stone is that it’s a diverse product. No two slabs are the same and each piece is unique with its own variations. It’s an emotional selection and not something that can be man-made or digitally printed. There’s a focus now on natural stone, with people wanting to invest in themselves. You can pretty much find a well-priced and durable stone to work with most budgets. KBQ: Do you have advice for renovators using natural stone for the first time? NK: They need to ask the right questions to ensure the stone is suitable for the applications they want to use it for. We’re open and honest and if they choose something like the wrong

PROFILE

kitchen benchtop, we’ll recommend a material that’s better wearing. We also give advice about care and maintenance, which is easy to forget in all the excitement. It’s not a hard thing to maintain if you use a good sealer the first time. KBQ: Natural stone and porcelain are often used in bathrooms and kitchens, but what are some unconventional design uses? NK: In the kitchen particularly, people are using it broadly. It was mainly seen as a benchtop material, but designers are using stone all over the kitchen now such as in vertical applications on cabinet doors, as rangehood cladding, on cooktops and splashbacks. Kitchens are bigger now because people need the space for entertaining, so they’ll also have a back butler pantry with porcelain tops because it’s so hard and well-wearing. In bathrooms, people are having a fully integrated sink made of stone or cut the walls from stone.

207 completehome.com.au kitchens & bathrooms quarterly

PROFILE PROJECT

KBQ: What are some common misconceptions when using natural stone? NK: Stained marble is the biggest. People always say if a glass of red wine is left on a marble bench it will leave ring marks. It’s a reaction with the minerals in the marble that can etch and burn the face of the marble and occurs mainly in darker or polished finishes. People were using cream and beiges which were on-trend and not as well-wearing as white marble. But now we recommend a honed matt finish and mainly white Italian marble which is denser. And it’s still a really good idea to use a sealer to protect against staining.

KBQ: What sets CAV’ART Designer Stone apart from other natural stone suppliers? NK: Being a niche business we really focus on quality over quantity. We don’t want to be the biggest, but we have a good range with great service. We make it a stone selection experience rather than a task. It’s a bit of a daunting process to select stone in a warehouse, so we try to take the fear away and be serviceable and open. We also try to be daring with the colours we bring, colours that people haven’t seen before.

FOR MORE INFO KBQ: Which natural stone trends are you seeing now? NK: Brazilian quartzites are really popular because they’re so beautiful and you get amazing colours, almost like it’s an artwork. The next thing is texture. People used polished marble for years but now it’s more a honed leather finish so you can feel the veins and texture. People love that tactile feel. They’re also available in bigger slabs, which fits the bill for bigger kitchens.

With more than three decades of experience, the company’s design and manufacturing teams are experts when it comes to acrylic bath and spa technology. A combination of skill, premium materials, innovative design and rigorous testing creates bathware that is superior in style, strength and safety.

FREESTANDING BATHS Decina’s freestanding baths are a contemporary design innovation and create a stunning bathroom focal point. Inspired by the latest European trends, these designs are simple to install with adjustable self-supporting feet. No additional hob, frame or tiling is required and there are no limitations

on placement. Decina’s freestanding bath range also includes back-to-wall and back-to-corner styles. Various lengths from 1300–1800mm are available to suit any bathroom size and are also backed by a 10-year warranty.

FREESTANDING SPA BATHS Decina’s collection of freestanding spa baths is the ultimate in luxury bathing. The design team has combined the design statement of a freestanding bath with the comfort and hydrotherapy benefits of a spa bath. Simple to install with adjustable self-supporting feet, they can be placed just about anywhere in the bathroom. The generous sizes are suitable for dual bathing, with increased internal depth for full-body submersion. The thermalefficient designs come with in-built heat pumps.

INSET & ISLAND BATHS & SPA BATHS Inset baths and spa baths are the ideal spacesaving solution, perfect for bathroom renovations and shower bath applications. Decina’s innovative four-sided tile bead allows an inset bath to be integrated into a tiled wall to create a flush watertight finish. As the name suggests, an island bath can be set away from walls, creating an island-style focal point. The tiled edge of the bath hob is functional and can be used for seating or storage. All Decina’s inset and island baths and spa baths can be fitted with an optional overflow outlet, which takes any excess water back to the waste. A base frame, which is a factory-fitted, galvanised steel base support with adjustable,

self-levelling legs, is available for order with most Decina inset and island baths and spas. It makes for immediate on-site installation. An EZI FRAME is a separate steel base support frame with adjustable, self-levelling legs. Available for order with select Decina baths and spa baths, it is simply glued on-site to the bath base. Inset or island baths and spa baths are manufactured from sanitary-grade acrylic with a steel rod-reinforced rim and a double-reinforced timber and fibreglass base board. Decina spa baths are assembled in Australia and hand-tested before dispatch and delivery. Available in three levels of massage action, from 12 to 28 low-profile or flush jets, there is a spa to meet all needs and budgets. Indulge in the

relaxing bubbles with the peace of mind that the pumps, jets and fittings are backed by a five-year warranty. All Decina baths are manufactured to stringent Australian Standards, so you can be assured they are consistently safe and reliable. And thanks to the extensive range, just about every style, budget or space requirement is catered for.
