lassic yet coastal, sophisticated yet relaxed … Hamptons style has taken Australia by storm and it’s hardly surprising. With a palette inspired by the coast, light and bright interior spaces, and a chic beach vibe, the Hamptons look may hail from America’s East Coast but it is perfectly at home here. The Hamptons, a well-known American seaside community on Long Island, has long been an upmarket haven for affluent New Yorkers and the distinctive homes that predominate are entirely in keeping with Australian tastes and our love of laid-back indoor-outdoor living. Typified by the use of raw, rustic materials, both coastal and traditional design details, and elegant accessories, it is a style that is just as well suited to a home in the suburbs of Melbourne as it is a beach community in Sydney or Brisbane’s inner-city. A traditional Hamptons interior can be easily identified. Inside look for detailed architraves and skirting boards, cornices,

wainscot panelling, a timber staircase and plantation shutters. Herringbone flooring, high ceilings, classic tapware and light fittings, subway-tiled kitchen splashbacks and stone benchtops also say Hamptons. Interior colour palettes generally tend to be calming and consist of more neutral tones paired with darker hues such as charcoal, black and deep navy or softer contrasting tones like grey and dusty blue. These colours are repeated throughout for a unified look with the softer beach-inspired tones making the spaces feel light and breezy. In the Hamptons-style home you will often find bold fabric patterns, stripes and heavy, textured linens finished with traditional techniques such as buttoning, studding and contrast piping to add an extra layer of luxury. In the bedrooms and living areas, wallpaper is used to add emphasis, express individuality and anchor the space. Furniture pieces tend to be large and accessories such as oversized mirrors, wall clocks and pendant lights give a look of stability and strength, but the Hamptons style is one that can be easily manipulated. Depending on your personal preferences, it can lean more to the coastal or the classic,

or it can take on a more modern mien, even a splash of contemporary glamour. A Hamptons exterior is just as distinctive and is one that always makes an indelible first impression. Here we look at what gives a Hamptons-style home its charm and grace and the many ways Australian designers and home builders have redefined the look while retaining that original Hamptons character. n the shores of Australia, the Hamptons style has come a long way. Evolving from its American roots, Hamptons Down Under is pared back for a relaxed, more comfortable look better suited to the Australian lifestyle. An emphasis on open plan, outdoor living is one of the reasons this style is so popular here as is the laid-back, beach-chic vibe that suits coastal or country locations as well as new and established suburbs. Typified by large, light-filled living spaces, high ceilings and the use of raw, rustic materials along with classic design details and elegant accessories, a Hamptons-inspired interior is easy to spot. Wainscot panelling, a timber staircase, plantation shutters, and detailed architraves and skirting boards are part of the look. So is timber flooring, in particular herringbone pattern for a traditional look, classic tapware and light fittings (such as pendant lights), Shaker or country-style kitchen cabinets, subway-tiled kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls, and stone or marble benchtops also say Hamptons. Externally, look for weatherboard cladding, gabled roofs, porthole windows and highlighted window trims. So what is it about the Hamptons style that has captured the hearts of homeowners the length and breadth of the country and how can you create your own Hamptons-inspired haven? Well, we posed that question to some leading home builders … here is what they had to say.

A TIMELESS CLASSIC “The simple elegant lines of the Hamptons look shows no signs of falling out of favour. With its classic good looks, it’s a design aesthetic that is perfectly suited to coastal, country or plantation-style homes, but can easily be updated to give it a more modern interpretation,” says David Bourke, Sales & Marketing Manager NSW, Clarendon Homes. “Traditional Hamptons architectural details such as pitched ceilings, exposed beams and wooden floors, combined with a palette of light, tranquil colours, creates an aura of comfort and relaxed luxury that holds endless appeal.” “It is a classic design approach which makes it timeless but it’s also about creating a lifestyle,” says Stephen Higham, Director, Hume Building. “Hamptons living is about relaxed, open-plan living which blends so well with the Australian way

WHAT ABOUT BRICK? Kerb appeal is important when mastering the Hamptons look, with defining features including gable-style roofs, window trims and welcoming verandas. Brick can be an integral part of achieving the kind of coastal Hamptons look so many Australians favour and with so many colour options now available, homeowners can achieve that all-important classic, light-toned facade. To meet the demand for Hamptons-style facades, there is a growing number of bricks available with suitable tones. One example is the softly-coloured Coastal Hamptons range from PGH Bricks which draws inspiration from natural seaside elements. There are four options: Beach, a sun-bleached white with a soft, raw texture that exudes warmth; Crevole, a clean, crisp white that showcases ‘sophisticated beach living’ at its best; Washed White, with its whitewashed finish; and Gull Grey, an elegant muted grey that brings a more modern twist to a classic Hamptons exterior. Teamed with white window trims, French doors and balustrades, Gull Grey forms the perfect base for a modern coastal home. For a really authentic Hamptons look, you could consider combining the coastal-inspired brick range with Cultured Stone, a manufactured stone cladding product that brings a genuine stone look and feel to feature walls, pillars and fences.

of life. The original Hamptons homes on Long Island on the East Coast of America have been passed down through the generations which indicates it’s not something that goes in and out of fashion.” “It represents coastal elegance with a relaxed and homely feel,” adds Ian Heath, General Manager, McDonald Jones. “This means you have the comfort of a beach house but the sophistication that comes with the use of luxury finishes. This creates an environment that is easy to relax in and is ideal for entertaining.” “It just suits our lifestyle here in Australia perfectly,” continues Michelle Batchelor, DR Homes’ Style Consultant. “With our relaxed way of life and love for the outdoors, Hamptons-inspired homes offer us resort-style living where we can feel connected to the people and spaces around us.”

spaces and warm grounding timber floors,” says Stephen. “The colour palette is elegant and plays with warm whites, egg shell beige and natural linen tones; also dreamy blues and French navy. In living areas you might find upholstered or leather furniture mixed with rattan seating; in the kitchen, white will be the dominant colour, cabinets will have Shaker doors and benchtops will have a luxury stone look.”

INTERIORS OF DISTINCTION “A Hamptons interior encapsulates relaxed yet sophisticated coastalstyle living,” says Michelle. “The classic Hampton interior is dominated by fresh whites with signature blue accents and natural materials dotted throughout. An elegant look is achieved by the layering of textures and surfaces, from detailed mouldings and wall panelling to linen-covered sofas, rattan and jute furniture, timber floors and shells or coral used in coffee table vignettes. “While the kitchen is most commonly white, accent colours such as blue, green or grey are desirable and often applied to a large island bench. Panels and drawers have Shaker-style profiles in varying levels of detail depending on whether you are trying to achieve a traditional look or more modern take on the Hamptons style. Topped with marble benchtops and a splashback of subway tiles, you have the complete look. “And when thinking of window furnishings, think of shutters and sheer curtains,” she adds. “Let that natural light and fresh air flow in. Also make a statement with your greenery. It doesn’t need to be complicated.” “Inside a Hamptons home there is a beautiful balance of light, bright

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS “Architectural detail is the number one design focus — skirting boards, mouldings and architraves around doors and windows are key to the Hamptons look. Panelled detail such as wainscoting, ascot panelling and VJ panelling will feature throughout or at least in key areas such as hallways and lounge areas,” says Ian. “From the kitchen to the bathroom, laundry and living rooms, built-in cabinetry is another essential element and one that should have a consistent look. Timber flooring is quintessentially Hamptons, in either a standard board or a herringbone pattern, and wall lights, complemented with pendants in the lounge, kitchen and dining area, are must-haves.” “A classic Hamptons home will have wall panelling, panelled doors and feature lighting,” agrees David, “but it will also have an open fireplace, white

HAMPTONS DOWN UNDER window shutters, coffered and raked ceilings and a traditional staircase. To achieve an iconic Hamptons look the staircase will have wide ebony timber treads with white risers, beautifully carved newel posts and balusters, and a timber handrail.” “Because of the architectural detailing in a traditional Hamptons home, it’s a style that is often shown to best effect in larger-scale homes so the features can really be the star of the show,” adds Ian. “Also, original Hamptons homes feature large, open-living spaces so a home of larger proportions is ideal.”

MASSES OF STREET APPEAL “A Hamptons devotee is inspired by a true Hampton’s facade and all that goes with it, which means timber weatherboard cladding, windows and fretwork trims and a traditional rtoof of corrugated metal or shingles,” says David. “However, these can be easily substituted for modern, maintenancefree building materials such as a Colorbond roof, Stegbar aluminium windows with decorative glazing bars and preformed mouldings.

“It’s easy to see why Hamptons has been so successful in Australia with our shared love of indoor-outdoor living and entertaining,” says Natalee Bowen, Principal at Indah Island and James Hardie Ambassador. “However, over the years we’ve adapted the style to our more modern tastes and the environment. Today, when we look at the homes that inspired us, it’s clear that a new Australian Hamptons look has emerged. “A basic tenant of the Hamptons look is reflecting the surrounding area. In America this means the whites, blues and other coastal elements, while in Australia, we take this principle and apply it to our locations. Colour palettes can range from eucalyptus greens and caramels in rural areas, to shades of grey in cities,” says Natalee. “After a long legacy of using red and cream brick, Australians are looking to use modern materials that give a feel of quality craftsmanship that will stand the test of time,” says Natalee. “A must-have is Linea weatherboards that create a classic Australian cottage look that has a colonial charm, giving a familiar but more contemporary shadow line look than is used in America to add texture. “Gable roofs are a classic Hamptons motif that stops the home looking blocky and creates beautiful ceilings inside the home. In America they have multiple gables, dormer windows and cupolas, as money is no object for the extremely wealthy Hamptons homeowners. In Australia, where the look has been made more accessible, volume builders have figured out how to simplify the style with token gables,” adds Natalee.

feature | hamptons style “Natural, coastal and country colours help define a Hamptons home so the facade is generally awash with greys or possibly caramel or neutral tones, all trimmed in fresh white. Sharp white heritage-inspired mouldings, fretwork and porthole-window louvre vents are classic elements that are often complemented with sandstone or bluestone feature walling, and there will be a shady veranda too.” “The key characteristics of a Hamptons facade are very visually appealing. You can walk past a Hamptons-inspired home and feel a sense of comfort and relaxation as you take in its cladding, large windows and French doors,” says Stephan. “If you want a more modern look, there are options in regards to plank sizes and you can personalise it with colour choice and which way you run the cladding.” A Hamptons facade is not just available through project home builders. Many modular and kit home companies offer Hamptons facades with their home designs while companies such as Garth Chapman Queenslanders are adept at blending Hamptons features into traditional Queenslander designs — and this gets to the heart of the matter. The Hamptons style is highly adaptable, which is another very good reason why it is so enduring and well loved.

he exterior look of a Hamptons-inspired home is very distinctive and its incredible street presence is one of the reasons it’s so popular with Australian homeowners. It really appeals to Australian tastes and even shares some common characteristics with an iconic Australian architectural style, the Queenslander. Hamptons homes feature gable-style roofs and when combined with classic window trims and timber detailing, a weatherboard-look facade, perhaps a porthole feature window and, in many cases, a welcoming deck or veranda, the look is timeless and inviting. And as for the all-important classic, lighttoned colour palette — often a mix of light grey and white or soft natural tones — that is unmistakable.

It has smart technologyoperated air-conditioning, solar heating and a 6-star David Adams, energy rating. Director, “On the facade we paid Stroud Homes Brisbane East close attention to detail, using several finishes to create the perfect look. It took a lot of planning, including multiple sketches, concepts and around 30 revisions of the plans to get it just right,” adds David. “From inside to out, the whole effect is of a warm and inviting home that looks like a postcard. rom the distinctive raked ceilings and classic VJ wall panelling to the ornate fixtures and fittings, this home offers the owner — a lover of Hamptons architecture and decor — everything she could have hoped for. The brief was simple, says David Adams who co-owns Stroud Homes Brisbane East with his wife Lisa. “It was Hamptons, Hamptons, and more Hamptons,” he recalls. With its functional floor plan and well-considered layout, this is a home that can cater to all life stages, from young families to retirees. “It’s only 233sqm but it feels much bigger thanks to the large open living areas and seamless indooroutdoor connection,” says David. “In terms of design, VJ panelling, feature timber work and a 2-pack Hamptons-style kitchen were all part of the original concept. “The client had great taste and was able to make product selections with confidence. The result is breathtaking, from the facade to the selection of the furniture. While selections were very much led by the client, we do have an interior designer who

ffering a modern Hamptons-style exterior and interior, this home was built for a professional Queensland couple who recently welcomed their first child. “The couple chose our Wildflower design because they loved the separate children’s zone which proved especially useful when they had to work from home due to COVID-19. They could just close off that part of the home at the end of the day and enjoy the separation between work and everyday life,” says Aletha Walters, Director, Stroud Homes Wide Bay. “This flexibility is one of the reasons why the Wildflower is our most popular design to date. An older couple, for example, can use this separate zone for visiting adult children or perhaps grandchildren while young professionals might like to use it as a breakaway study, home office or studio gaming area separate from the main part of the home. It suits all needs.” For the kitchen, Stroud Homes customised the floor plan to provide the perfect butler’s pantry space. “The family wanted the kitchen to be the hub of the home and this addition has
