The Ecoustic® Timber Blade Collection of acoustic modular wall and ceiling panels is produced using PEFC-certified solid wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Available in four beautiful blade profiles, the panels can be installed in horizontal or vertical orientation on walls and ceilings. The system features a black acoustic scrim backing to enhance sound-absorption. Timber Blade Panels are designed for modularity and are pre-finished allowing for simple, efficient installation, and ease of ongoing maintenance. TImber Ceiling Blades are available in five profile options, multiple wood stains, and both 2' x 2' or 2' x 4' size to fit standard suspended ceiling grid systems. Alternatively, they can be suspended below the existing ceiling level by use of a concealed bracketing system. Timber Ceiling Blade Tiles are designed for modularity, simple and efficient installation, and ease of ongoing maintenance. The tiles are easily trimmed to allow for various ceiling conditions. Moon by Abstracta
Moon, a globe-shaped acoustic lamp designed by Thomas Bernstrand provides high quality directed lighting with exceptional sound absorption. Its shape and generous scale allow it to absorb both high and low-frequency ambient noise effectively. In designing Moon, Bernstrand left nothing to chance. Following two years of development work, he worked closely with Abstracta’s product developers to arrive at a lamp whose shape not only produces really good lighting but maximizes acoustic impact. The lamp’s housing consists of two acoustic felt blankets, each with its particular properties. And thanks to clever construction, even the air within the lamp serves as a sound-absorbing material. This results in high acoustic performance, very low material consumption – and a very lightweight sound-absorbing lamp.

The result is an ambient, indirect light that brings warmth without glare. Measuring 11.0" x 59.1" x 7.1", Vika Wall Sconce is available in both vertical and horizontal orientations, with or without integrated lighting. Vika Sconce is provided with a 118" cord and features a 12V LED, offering 21 Watts of power and 715 lumens of brightness at a cozy 2700K color temperature.

Swedish designer Thomas Bernstrand explores the potential of an essential element of architecture to add new value and function to a space: the pillar. Since antiquity, the pillar has been used as support for buildings but also as ornament and monument. Thomas Bernstrand’s version of the pillar makes a playful reference to the latter use: It is possible to put a plant on top of it. But in all other respects, his pillar is different from the pillars and columns we are used to. dB Pillar is filled with textile waste making it a great sound absorber while contributing to a green environment. dB Pillar includes tables, stools, and pillars in various heights. Several pillars with different additional features are available upon request: pillars with whiteboard, with support for climbing plants, with magazine holders, with flower pots, and with coat hangers. dB Pillar works wonders for the soundscape. In combination with the material, the design of the product gives it unique acoustic features. It radically reduces the levels of low frequency noise, that most products fail to deal with.

Product Matrix
Absorption: The conversion of sound energy to heat energy. It varies with the frequency and angle of incidence of the sound that strikes acoustic material. A “soft room” is a space with highly absorbent surfaces whereas a “hard room” has surfaces of low absorbent value and are therefore highly reflective and reverberant.
Air-borne sound: Sound traveling through air rather than through structure.
Air Gap: For effective absorption of sound energy, the sound wave should pass through the absorbent material during its maximum velocity (quarter wavelength). The speed of sound is zero when it meets a rigid barrier such as the backing wall of a sound absorbing material. Increasing the thickness of the sound absorber or providing an air gap between the absorber and wall will improve absorption.
Attenuation: Also known as blocking or dampening, attenuation involves dividing a soundscape into discrete acoustic zones using different types of acoustical barriers that restrict sound from traveling without obstruction.
Broadband sound: A spectrum of sound consisting of a large number of frequencies, none of which is dominant.
Critical distance: The distance from a sound source at which the energy of direct sound and reverberant sound are equal.
Decibel (dB): The measurement term used to define sound intensity. A 10 times increase in sound intensity is defined as a Bel (named after Alexander Graham Bell); 4 Bels represent a 10,000 times increase in sound intensity. A decibel is 1⁄10th a Bel; 40 dB equal 4 Bels. A 1dB change in sound intensity is just noticeable; most humans can distinguish a 3dB change and consider a 10dB change as twice or half loud.
Diffraction: The change in direction of sound resulting from a discontinuity of a boundary (say, an open door).
Diffusion: A means to distribute sound energy in equally directions.
Echo: A return of sound that is perceived as a discrete sound.
Flanking transmission: The transmission of sound by an unintended path.
Frequency: The number of back and forth vibrations of air molecules (cycles) that occur in a second; expressed as Hertz (Hz). Sometimes known as pitch.
Hearing: The ability of the human ear to translate changes from ambient atmospheric pressure caused by sound energy into a signal recognizable by the brain. Sensitivity to sound depends upon its frequency and energy. The audible range of frequency for humans is 20Hz to 20,000Hz, provided that at least 0 dB of sound intensity (threshold of hearing) is present.
Hertz (Hz): a unit of frequency of one cycle per second
In phase: Sound waves that reach their peak compressions (and rarefactions) at the same time.
Insulation: The ability of material to prevent sound from reaching a location either by reflection back to the sound source or by acoustic resistance.
Inverse-square law: Sound intensity (sound energy per unit of area) varies inversely with the square of the distance from its source. Sound intensity decreases 6 dB for each doubling of the distance from its source.

Noise: Unwanted sound having no utility which may be airborne or structure-borne. Like a pollutant, noise needs to be limited and controlled to diminish its negative physiological, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive affects.
Noise reduction coefficient (NRC): The arithmetical average, expressed as a decimal to the nearest .05, of the sound absorption coefficients at 250Hz, 500Hz, 1000Hz, & 2000Hz.
Octave: A doubling or halving of frequency. 20Hz-40Hz is considered the bottom octave in a series of even-order harmonics that extend without limit beyond the audible range.
Reflection: Sound and light are reflected off smooth surfaces in a similar manner – the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
Refraction: The bending of sound waves traveling through media that conduct sound at varying speed.
Resonant frequency: Any object will vibrate at a particular sound frequency, its natural resonant frequency, when disturbed by physical force or by sound having frequency equal to its resonant frequency.
Reverberation: The lingering of sound in an enclosed space after the original sound source has stopped. A room with much reverb is said to be “live”; one without reverb is said to be “dead”. Reverberation time (RT60): The time, in seconds, that reverberant sound energy in a space diminishes by 60dB.
Sabin: The measurement unit, in inch-pounds, of sound absorption. One square foot of acoustic material with a sound absorption coefficient of 1 has a Sabin value of 1.
Sabine, Wallace C.: The father of modern acoustics and the developer of the Sabine reverberation equation; RT60 = .049 sec./ft. x Volume/Absorption Surface.
Sound: A vibrational disturbance comprised of alternating compressions and rarefactions of air molecules. The compressions push air together and thereby cause higher than normal atmospheric pressure, whereas rarefactions spread air molecules further apart thereby causing lower than normal atmospheric pressure. Total sound energy is the potential energy from ambient air pressure and the kinetic energy of moving air molecules.
Sound absorption coefficient (“alpha”): The amount, expressed as a decimal value between 0 and 1 to the nearest .05, of sound energy that is absorbed, or otherwise not reflected, by an acoustic material at a specified frequency.
Sound masking: The process by which the audibility of one sound is diminished by the introduction of another sound. White noise uses equal sound energy at all frequencies and thereby favors higher frequency spectra. Pink noise balances sound energy over a series of octaves and sounds less harsh.
Sound transmission class (STC): A rating system that provides an estimate of the insulation ability of a partition.
Structure-borne noise: The generation of unwanted radiated sound caused by vibrational forces in solid materials.
Wavelength: The distance a sound wave travels from compression to the next compression. The wavelength (or period) of sound at any frequency can be computed by dividing the speed of sound (1087 ft./sec.) by its frequency. At 20Hz, the wavelength of sound is 56 feet long. These long sound waves give low frequency sound (bass) its penetrating ability.
Conflict Minerals: The Conflict Minerals Regulation aims to help stem the trade in four minerals – tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold – which sometimes finance armed conflict or are mined using forced labor.

Declare: Declare labels disclose all intentionally-added ingredients and residuals at or above 100ppm (0.01%) present in the final product by weight. Each ingredient must be reported with a chemical name, CAS number, and percentage or percentage range.
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): EPD provides information about a product’s impact upon the environment, such as global warming potential, smog creation, ozone depletion and water pollution.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Wood: Wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.
FR Additives (Flame Retardant Additives): The term flame retardant subsumes a diverse group of chemicals that are added to manufactured materials, such as plastics and textiles, and surface finishes and coatings.
Greentag Level A Certification: Global GreenTag is a robust, trusted and widely recognized ecolabel. Their GreenRate program is a product rating system designed to meet the requirements of the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star® ‘Sustainable Products’ credits. Level A equates to 100% credit points available.
Health Product Declaration® (HPD): The HPD Open Standard is a standardized specification for the accurate, reliable, and consistent reporting of product contents and associated health information for products used in the built environment.
Low VOC: Refers to volatile organic compounds that are not harmful to the environment and humans.
Mindful MATERIALS: Mindful Materials is a free online aggregator of sustainability information for design professionals and manufacturers. It was created as a user-friendly platform that promotes product transparency and optimization information across the industry.
Oeko-Tex®: The testing and certification process on which our standards are based guarantees maximum consumer safety. STANDARD 100 by Oeko-Tex® is one of the world’s best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances.
PEFC: The Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems. As an international non-profit, non-governmental organization, PEFC is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.
Prop 65 Compliant: Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
PVC-Free: PVC-free vinyl has a lower level of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) than traditional vinyl, which can help improve indoor air quality.
Acoustic Terms & Definitions
Rapidly Renewable Content: Products that are produced from plant resources that are harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter, including, but not limited to, bamboo, eucalyptus, wheat straw, sunflower hulls, cork oak, wheatboard, linoleum, and sorghum.
Recycled Content: Recycled content means the total percentage of recovered material in a product, including pre consumer and post consumer materials.
Red List Compliant: Products that do not contain chemicals that have been designated as harmful to living creatures, including humans, or the environment.
Third Party Certified: Third-party certification means that an independent organization has reviewed the manufacturing process of a product and has independently determined that the final product complies with specific standards for safety, quality or performance.
