Absorption: How well a material soaks up sound instead of bouncing it back. A ″soft room″ is a space with highly absorbent surfaces whereas a ″hard room″ has surfaces of low absorbent value and are therefore highly reflective and reverberant.

Air Gap: A space between a sound-absorbing material and the wall or ceiling surface. This gap increases sound absorption by allowing sound waves to interact more effectively with the material.

Air-borne sound: Sound traveling through air rather than through structure.

Attenuation: Also known as blocking or dampening, attenuation involves dividing a soundscape into discrete acoustic zones using different types of acoustical barriers that restrict sound from traveling without obstruction.

Broadband sound: A spectrum of sound consisting of a large number of frequencies, none of which is dominant.

Conflict Minerals: The Conflict Minerals Regulation aims to help stem the trade in four minerals – tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold – which sometimes finance armed conflict or are mined using forced labor.

Critical distance: The distance from a sound source at which the energy of direct sound and reverberant sound are equal.

Decibel (dB): When discussing acoustics, the term used to define sound intensity, also known as how loud or quiet something is. Decibels are measured in a logarithmic scale, which means while a 10dB difference means something is 10 times louder/quieter, a 20dB difference means something is 100 times louder/quieter. For reference, leaves rustling is ~30dB, average room noise is ~50dB, average office noise is ~70dB, noisy restaurant is ~85dB, a car horn is ~100dB.

Declare: Declare labels disclose all intentionally-added ingredients and residuals at or above 100ppm (0.01%) present in the final product by weight. Each ingredient must be reported with a chemical name, CAS number, and percentage or percentage range.

Diffraction: The change in direction of sound resulting from a discontinuity of a boundary (i.e. an open door).

Diffusion: How a surface scatters sound in different directions to reduce echoes.

Echo: A return of sound that is perceived as a discrete sound.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): EPD provides information about a product’s impact upon the environment, such as global warming potential, smog creation, ozone depletion and water pollution.

Flanking transmission: The transmission of sound by an unintended path.

Flutter Echo: Rapid series of sound reflections that bounce back and forth between two parallel surfaces, like walls or ceilings, creating a harsh, metallic or “fluttering” sound. It’s especially noticeable in small rooms with hard surfaces and can distort audio clarity in studios or offices

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Wood: Wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.

FR Additives (Flame Retardant Additives): The term flame retardant subsumes a diverse group of chemicals that are added to manufactured materials, such as plastics and textiles, and surface finishes and coatings.

Frequency: The number of back-and-forth vibrations of air molecules (cycles) that occur in a second; expressed as Hertz (Hz). Sometimes known as pitch.

GreenTag Level A Certification: Global GreenTag is a robust, trusted and widely recognized ecolabel. Their GreenRate program is a product rating system designed to meet the requirements of the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star® ‘Sustainable Products’ credits. Level A equates to 100% credit points available.

Health Product Declaration® (HPD): The HPD Open Standard is a standardized specification for the accurate, reliable, and consistent reporting of product contents and associated health information for products used in the built environment.

Hearing: The ability of the human ear to translate changes from ambient atmospheric pressure caused by sound energy into a signal recognizable by the brain. Sensitivity to sound depends upon its frequency and energy. The audible range of frequency for humans is 20Hz to 20,000Hz, provided that at least 0 dB of sound intensity (threshold of hearing) is present.

Hertz (Hz): a unit of frequency of one cycle per second.

In phase: Sound waves that reach their peak compressions (and rarefactions) at the same time.

Insulation: The ability of material to prevent sound from reaching a location either by reflection back to the sound source or by acoustic resistance.

Inverse-square law: Sound intensity (sound energy per unit of area) varies inversely with the square of the distance from its source. Sound intensity decreases 6 dB for each doubling of the distance from its source.

Low VOC: Refers to volatile organic compounds that are not harmful to the environment and humans.

Mindful MATERIALS: mindful MATERIALS is a free online aggregator of sustainability information for design professionals and manufacturers. It was created as a user-friendly platform that promotes product transparency and optimization of information across the industry.

Noise: Unwanted sound having no utility which may be airborne or structure borne. Like a pollutant, noise needs to be limited and controlled to diminish its negative physiological, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive effects.

PVC-Free: PVC-free vinyl has a lower level of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) than traditional vinyl, which can help improve indoor air quality.

Product Terms & Definitions

Rapidly Renewable Content: Products that are produced from plant resources that are harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter, including, but not limited to, bamboo, eucalyptus, wheat straw, sunflower hulls, cork oak, wheatboard, linoleum, and sorghum.

Recycled Content: Recycled content means the total percentage of recovered material in a product, including pre-consumer and post-consumer materials.

Red List Compliant: Products that do not contain chemicals that have been designated as harmful to living creatures, including humans, or the environment.

Reflection: When sound bounces off a surface, like an echo off a wall.

Refraction: The bending of sound waves traveling through media that conduct sound at varying speed.

Resonant frequency: Any object will vibrate at a particular sound frequency, its natural resonant frequency, when disturbed by physical force or by sound having a frequency equal to its resonant frequency.

Reverberation: The lingering sound in an enclosed space after the original sound source has stopped. A room with much reverb is said to be ″live″; one without reverb is said to be ″dead″.

Reverberation time (RT60): The time, in seconds, that reverberant sound energy in a space diminishes by 60dB.

Sabin: A unit that measures how much sound a material absorbs. One Sabin is equal to the total sound absorption of one square foot of a perfectly absorbing surface.

Sabine, Wallace C.: The father of modern acoustics and the developer of the Sabine reverberation equation; RT60 = 0.049 sec./ft. x Volume/Absorption Surface.

Sound: Vibrations that travel through air or other materials and can be heard when they reach the ear. In acoustics, sound is measured and managed to improve comfort, privacy, and performance in interior spaces.

Sound Absorption Average (SAA): A number between 0 and 1 that tells you how well a material absorbs sound across a range of frequencies— specifically from 200 Hz to 2,500 Hz. SAA gives a more detailed picture than NRC because it averages across twelve frequency bands instead of just four.

Sound absorption coefficient (″alpha″): The amount, expressed as a decimal value between 0 and 1 to the nearest 0.05, of sound energy that is absorbed, or otherwise not reflected, by an acoustic material at a specified frequency.

Sound masking: The process by which the audibility of one sound is diminished by the introduction of another sound. White noise uses equal sound energy at all frequencies and thereby favors higher frequency spectra. Pink noise balances sound energy over a series of octaves and sounds less harsh.

Sound transmission class (STC): A rating system that provides an estimate of the insulation ability of a partition.

Speech Intelligibility: how clearly and easily a listener can understand what someone is saying. It reflects how well speech is articulated, pronounced, and delivered—so the words come across without confusion.

Speech Privacy: how well a conversation is protected from being overheard or understood by unintended listeners. In simple terms, it’s the ability to talk without others nearby being able to make out what you’re saying.

Structure-borne noise: The generation of unwanted radiated sound caused by vibrational forces in solid materials.

Third Party Certified: Third-party certification means that an independent organization has reviewed the manufacturing process of a product and has independently determined that the final product complies with specific standards for safety, quality or performance.

Wavelength: The distance a sound wave travels from compression to the next compression. The wavelength (or period) of sound at any frequency can be computed by dividing the speed of sound (1087 ft./sec.) by its frequency. At 20Hz, the wavelength of sound is 56 feet long. These long sound waves give low frequency sound (bass) its penetrating ability.
