Online Learning Environment

For online coursework, we use the Canvas. Online courses are mostly asynchronous with some components that are synchronous. Instructors schedule live sessions at mutually convenient times and record these sessions for those who are unable to attend. Students in UNF’s Osprey Professional Development Programs

can expect to engage in applied learning activities that directly relate to the work they are doing in their classrooms. While courses are academically rigorous, they are also fun!

“The program gave me a different approach from what I had learned before and I feel that I am much more effective. I’ve also learned to collaborate better with my peers. The other staff members and I bounce ideas off one another. Even though I’m not tech savvy, there were always people available to help me whenever I needed it. I encourage anyone, whenever presented with this opportunity, to take it. I feel UNF is a great place to learn.”

Your Staff

New Teachers Career Changers

UNF's Osprey Professional Development Programs are designed to support new teachers transitioning from non-education backgrounds, equipping them with the skills, strategies and confidence needed to succeed in the classroom. Duval County Public Schools needs passionate, qualified teachers, and our programs can help you bridge the gap between your teachers’ previous experiences and the unique demands of the classroom. For your new teachers who are making a career change, we offer courses as well as guidance and support tailored to help them thrive in their new role and prepare them for professional licensure.

Recent Graduates of Education Programs

Graduates of Florida state-approved teacher preparation programs who have passed all three portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) are eligible for a Professional Florida Educator's Certificate. However, even after certification, new teachers can still greatly benefit from ongoing professional development. Our programs can offer continuous opportunities for teachers to refine their teaching practices, build upon their existing skills, and develop expertise in specific areas of education, ensuring they remain effective, confident, and equipped to meet the evolving needs of their students.

Early Teachers (1-3 years experience)

For teachers with three or fewer years in the classroom, being a novice can present unique challenges, and new issues often arise. If there is an area in which improvement is needed, there are targeted programs available to support growth. Whether the focus is on a specific topic or a desire to deepen expertise in order to provide exceptional instruction, tailored professional development opportunities are available to help teachers strengthen their skills and enhance their effectiveness in the classroom.

Experienced Teachers

For experienced teachers aspiring to become school or district level administrators, our programs are designed to equip them with the leadership skills, strategic knowledge and confidence needed to excel in this critical role. Duval County Public Schools needs strong, visionary leaders who can build positive school cultures, manage operations effectively and inspire both staff and students. Our programs provide comprehensive training and tailored guidance to help teachers transition seamlessly into principalship and drive meaningful, school-wide impact.

Paraprofessional and Non-Instructional Personnel

We know Duval County Public Schools values the dedication and potential of their paraprofessionals and non-instructional personnel, UNF's Osprey Professional Development Programs provide tailored opportunities for these vital team members to grow professionally, pursue new roles and unlock pathways to greater impact within the district.

The Florida Para-to-Teacher Tuition Support Program provides financial assistance for paraprofessionals who are currently working in Florida’s public schools to earn a degree in special education or deaf education. The program, funded by the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services, will provide tuition, textbook, and FTCE support. Upon completion of the program, participants agree to fulfill a service obligation and teach students with disabilities in a Florida public school. The following programs are eligible:

Bachelor of Arts - Deaf Education (BA)

Bachelor of Arts in Education - Special Education (K-12) (BAE)

Master of Education - Special Education (MED)

Master of Arts in Teaching - Exceptional Student Education (MAT)

The Teacher Apprenticeship Program serves as an additional pathway for paraprofessionals who hold an Associate’s Degree to enter the teaching profession. While in the program, apprentices receive on-the-job training and related instruction leading toward a bachelor’s degree in education.

Athletics

UNF's Osprey Professional Development Programs recognize the critical role athletic staff play in shaping students’ physical, mental, and social well-being. A wellmanaged athletic program also strengthens school spirit, enhances community engagement, and serves as a unifying force within the school. Our programs provide athletic staff with the tools and strategies to maximize their impact, from promoting holistic student development to fostering a culture of acceptance and excellence. By supporting athletic staff, we help create environments where students thrive both on and off the field, contributing to the success and vibrancy of the entire school.
