At UNE, we do things differently.
As Australia’s first regional university, UNE has spent 70 years developing new ways of learning, becoming experts in delivering university education to students, no matter where they are.
Globally-networked, offering a range of innovative courses, and renowned for the quality of our student experience and relaxed learning environment outside of the major cities, UNE prides itself on taking an unconventional approach to education.

Cover and section artwork by Liv Joyce.
Liv Joyce is a proud Anaiwan woman and mother, born and raised in Armidale. This artwork honours the university’s place on Anaiwan Country and acknowledges the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities whose knowledge and stories continue to guide its path. It reflects the idea that UNE is shaped not only by the Country it stands on, but by the students and staff whose ties to Country and community reach far and wide. At its heart, this piece is a celebration of belonging, honouring the community you come from while taking pride in becoming part of the UNE community.

Acknowledgment of Country
The University of New England takes pride in recognising that our vibrant community, courses, and facilities thrive on the ancestral lands of the Anaiwan and Nganyaywana peoples. Anaiwan people occupy the high country of the Northern New England Tablelands. This land holds a deep sense of belonging, connected to one of the world’s oldest living cultures, both ancient and contemporary.
At UNE, we celebrate and respect Indigenous Knowledge Systems, acknowledging their essential role in Australia’s rich tapestry of knowledge. We honour the strength and resilience of all Indigenous communities and extend our heartfelt respects to their Elders past, present, and future.

Learning like nowhere else

When you study at UNE, you get a complete university experience: quality schooling, expert lecturers and a vibrant and supportive community. But our location, our history and our approach to teaching sets us apart from other universities.
As Australia’s first regional university, this unconventional approach to learning comes from deep within our DNA. For decades, we have pioneered distance learning, and become experts in online education. Now, initiatives such as the Lab Next 70 innovation hub are revolutionising student learning through world-first AI applications.
A regional base with a global reach
Based in Armidale, the UNE campus encompasses 74 spectacular hectares and combines heritage buildings with modern academic, sporting, recreational and accommodation facilities.
UNE students have easy access to affordable accommodation that puts you in the heart of the action, giving you complete independence and access to academic, sporting and social facilities. That means you get every opportunity to reach your full potential at university.

UNE’s mandate for stimulating education, cutting-edge research and practical application is creating a steady stream of innovations leading real world change. Initiatives led by UNE staff or alumni are saving endangered turtles, revolutionising livestock production through the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit’s (AGBU) pioneering genetic work, curbing methane emissions in the world’s best equipped facilities, protecting the mental health of Australians in remote areas through the Manna Institute, supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities facing climate change anxiety, and uncovering our prehistoric past in palaeontological digs in far-flung deserts.
Now is the time to take your place on this prestigious list.

Pippa Pryor
BACHELOR OF RURAL SCIENCE
I decided to study at UNE due to it being a rural university. I didn’t want to study cows from a high-rise building! The Bachelor of Rural Science allowed me to study all aspects of agriculture while also learning the science behind the systems.

Josh Potts BACHELOR OF AGRIBUSINESS
I chose to study at UNE because I’ve heard it’s one of the best-rated universities for Agriculture. It was my first choice for that reason. Getting out to the farms for hands-on experience and fieldwork is the best way for me to learn.

Kathleen Murphy BACHELOR OF ZOOLOGY
My time within the Bachelor of Zoology at UNE was transformative for my life and career. With the support from lecturers, I was able to explore so many different career avenues from ecology, museum work, to research.
The degree offered some incredible opportunities like going to Namibia for three weeks, volunteering with the UNE Natural History Museum, and representing UNE at the Australian Museum Sydney Science Trail.
I am so grateful for UNE and the opportunities it has provided me throughout my studies.

International study opportunities
For many students, studying overseas is incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s travelling to a new country, experiencing other cultures first-hand, immersing yourself in your area of study or making new friends from around the globe, you’ll return with fresh insights, confidence and global connections.
UNE’s Study Abroad and Exchange program gives you the chance to study overseas for up to a year as part of your degree. UNE has relationships with some of the most prestigious universities across Asia, Europe and North America, and in most cases, you can gain credit for your overseas study.

Who is eligible for international study?
All students enrolled in a diploma, advanced diploma or bachelor’s degree are eligible, including external, and international students. To be eligible, you must have also completed at least one year of full-time study before you apply. Your application will then be assessed by the Head of School. If you have good marks and attendance, your application is more likely to be successful.
Do I need to speak another language?
You don’t need to speak or be studying another language to take part in the program. UNE has partnerships with Universities in England, Canada, the USA and Hong Kong, and there’s also the option to study a number of subjects in English in countries such as Austria, Germany and Spain.
However, UNE also has a range of overseas opportunities tailored for language students. If you are studying French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, or Spanish, our placements allow you to really surround yourself in your chosen language.
Cost of international study
The cost of studying overseas doesn’t have to be a limitation. You may be eligible for a scholarship or loan to help with fees, or you may also be eligible to continue receiving Austudy or Youth Allowance.
Short term study tours
UNE also offers a range of short term study tours. These intensive experiences are designed to complement your coursework, allowing you to travel to another country to immerse yourself in your study and gain invaluable experience. Generally, our short term study tours last for a few weeks.

Entry options
ATAR Adjustment Factors
Who is this entry option for?
• If you’re finishing Year 12 this year and applying with an ATAR
UNE’s ATAR Adjustment Factors recognises your unique circumstances and experiences to potentially boost your selection rank by up to 10 points*. When you apply through UAC, QTAC or directly to UNE, we’ll automatically check your eligibility and apply any adjustments based on factors like your location, background, and personal circumstances.
You might be eligible if you:
• Live in a regional, rural or remote area
• Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• Are 21 years of age or over (if you took a gap year or are returning to study)
• Come from a non-English speaking background
• Are the first in your family to attend university
• Have a disability or medical condition
• Are a School Captain, Duke of Edinburgh award recipient, or Queen’s Scout/Guide
• Attend an under-represented school
For more information, visit une.edu.au/adjustment-factors
*It is important to note the adjustments factors that are added do not change your ATAR; they change your selection rank for your preferred course/s. Your selection rank = your ATAR + adjustment factors.
Applying without an ATAR
You have options beyond your ATAR to enter university. UNE recognises vocational (work-related) qualifications, prior study and work experience and the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) as potential entry options for most courses. Some pathways can also grant credit toward your degree, which can reduce both study time and cost. Some courses may have extra entry requirements, so always check your specific course page.
VET pathways
Who is this entry option for?
• If you have undertaken VET studies (complete or incomplete)
If you hold a Certificate III or higher, you can use it as the basis of your application to many UNE courses. If you want to extend your current qualification, you may be able to enter an articulation pathway or receive credit for a diploma or advanced diploma.
For more information, visit une.edu.au/entry-pathways
Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
Who is this entry option for?
• If you don’t have an ATAR
• If your ATAR results don’t reflect your current ability
• If you were home-schooled
STAT is a nationally-used test designed to assess a range of competencies that are considered important for success in tertiary study. The STAT assesses critical reasoning and problem-solving, not specific school subjects. UNE can grant admission to many undergraduate degrees based on performance in the STAT.
For more information, visit stat.acer.org/au
Credit for previous study and professional experience
Who is this entry option for?
• If you have completed or partially completed TAFE or VET study, including VET in Schools
• If you are a non-current school leaver who finished school within the last 2 years and have undertaken TAFE, VET or uni units
• If you have the relevant professional experience or industry certifications that align with your chosen course Your completed or partially completed study at university, TAFE, or a private provider, as well as relevant professional experience, can be assessed for admission.^ You can also apply for advanced standing (also called credit), which if granted, reduces the number of units you need to complete and can lower your overall fees.
For more information, visit une.edu.au/advanced-standing
^Credit is assessed case by case against your chosen course. You may be asked to provide transcripts, unit outlines, or evidence of professional experience. You can request a credit assessment when you apply or after you receive an offer.
Your qualification
Australian tertiary qualifications span from vocational (work) and higher education, with registered training organisations (RTOs) typically offering certificates and many diplomas, and universities offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
At university, your qualification is a degree which is awarded when you complete all course requirements. Qualifications range in length depending on your course and study load with double degrees taking longer.
Courses at UNE are comprised of elements including:
• Units: subjects you complete toward the total required
• Core units: compulsory for your degree

TRACKS
TRACKS gave me confidenceI can really see how much my study skills have grown. I’ve felt accepted and comfortable being part of the TRACKS mob in Tamworth, and I’m proud of achieving something I never thought I could... something no one in my family has done before. I know my younger self would be proud too, because I’ve always wanted to be a role model, and completing TRACKS is a big step toward that.
Open Entry Diplomas
Who is this pathway for?
• If you want to start your university journey with a recognised qualification that can lead straight into a bachelor’s degree
• If you want to start university but you don’t meet the entry requirements for your desired degree.
Start your university journey with UNE’s diverse range of diploma programs. These one-year courses (or part-time equivalent) don’t require an ATAR and provide guaranteed entry into related bachelor’s degrees. With several diplomas to choose from across areas such as business, arts, science and agriculture, you can complete your diploma and receive up to 8 units of credit (48 credit points) towards your bachelor’s degree. Depending on your unit choices and the bachelor you choose, you may receive credit for all units studied.
Many students complete their diploma, enter the workforce using this qualification, and then continue studying their bachelor’s degree while working in their desired industry. UNE’s open entry diplomas are a practical and supportive way to reach your goals while building a strong academic foundation.

Cost to study at UNE
Cost of a degree
Most undergraduate courses at UNE have Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) available. This means that the government makes a contribution to part of the cost of your degree, and you pay the difference between this contribution and the total cost of the degree. All eligible domestic students are allocated a CSP.* In order to maintain a CSP, you need to abide by Genuine Student Provisions, which include:
• Your engagement with your course
• Whether you satisfy the course requirements and complete your assessments
• For online study, how many times you log into your course
• Any enrolments in other courses that may make it impossible or highly improbable for you to complete your course.
Student Contribution Bands
There are four different ‘bands’ of costs, which are divided by discipline areas. These are known as ‘Student Contribution Bands’, (see page 41) and show the range of fees you will be charged. The fees you will pay are calculated based on the units selected within a course, which sit in different bands. For example, if you study a Bachelor of Arts, you might choose units in communications (band 4), English (band 1), and Theatre (band 2, Performing Arts). These units are all in different contribution bands and have different costs.
Student Learning Entitlement
The Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) is the amount of study you can undertake in a CSP in your lifetime. All eligible students will start with seven years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) Commonwealth supported study–this is your SLE amount. Your SLE amount will reduce as you undertake your study as a Commonwealth supported student. For more information on CSPs and SLE, visit studyassist.gov.au
HECS-HELP
HECS-HELP is a loan to help eligible students with a CSP pay their course fees. The loan allows you to defer course fees until you earn above the compulsory repayment threshold, which for the 2025-2026 income year is $67,001, at which point your repayments are automatically deducted via the Australian tax system.
There is also a lifetime limit on how much you can borrow through HECS-HELP. Once you reach this limit, you will not be able to access HECS-HELP again until you have made a repayment to the ATO.
*If you are a permanent humanitarian visa holder, New Zealand Special Category Visa holder, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen you may also be eligible for a CSP
Student Services Amenities Fee
The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is charged to students for services and amenities of a non-academic nature, such as sporting and recreational activities, employment and career advice, childcare, financial advice, and food services.
The SSAF is applied to all on-campus and online coursework students. In 2026 SSAF is charged at the rate of $46.60 per 6 credit points (a typical unit at UNE is 6 credit points). The fee is invoiced per study period and is payable by the census date. Eligible students have the option of deferring SSAF through the SA-HELP scheme. Students studying the Foundations Program or TRACKS Indigenous Foundation Program are exempt from paying SSAF. For more information on SSAF, visit une.edu.au/ssaf
Additional costs
Apart from your course fees, you will need to consider other costs such as textbooks, computer and printing equipment, transport costs, cost of living (food, accommodation and services), sport and recreation and social activities.
UNE provides a range of useful support options to assist you with the financial side of student life. Areas of assistance include the provision of student loans, seeking part-time employment and strategies for saving money. Living on campus at UNE is also a great way to help manage your costs. For more information on on-campus living costs, visit une.edu.au/living
Tertiary Access Payment
If you are moving from a regional or remote area to study at UNE, you may be eligible for a Tertiary Access Payment (TAP), of up to $5,000, depending on where your family home is located.
This one-off payment is to help offset the cost of relocation and getting settled in your new accommodation, as well as to support you in your first year of study with things like textbooks, fees and day-to-day living expenses. To check if you are eligible for the TAP, visit servicesaustralia.gov.au
Try our Fee Category Finder Tool at une.edu.au/fee-finder to help determine your eligibility and payment options.

Scholarships at UNE
Getting help to pay for your degree is easier than you think.
UNE scholarships assist you in paying for your degree, whether you are doing so up front or deferring your fees with government assistance. UNE scholarships are open for all to apply, and it doesn’t cost you anything. We strongly encourage you to apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for. You can apply for multiple scholarships in the one application. We recommend you create a list of all the scholarships you wish to apply for beforehand so you can include them on the one application form. If you become aware of another scholarship you wish you’d applied for, just tell us and we can add it to your existing application.
Not all UNE scholarships are about how well you did at school. There are UNE scholarships for students who come from rural or remote areas, belong to a disadvantaged group, are studying specific degrees, who excel at sport, or who live in a residential college, as well as those who have achieved high academic results.
For more information and eligibility criteria for each scholarship, visit une.edu.au/scholarships
Each year UNE grants scholarships worth over $2.5 million to hundreds of our students!
Scholarships we offer
Equity
If you’ve faced challenges such as financial hardship, living in a regional or remote location, a disability, or other personal circumstances, you may be eligible for an Equity Scholarship. These scholarships provide financial assistance to help with study-related costs.
Merit
If you’ve achieved strong academic results or sporting success, you may be eligible for a Merit Scholarship. These scholarships recognise your achievements and provide financial support to assist with your studies, helping you continue to excel in your chosen field.

Indigenous
If you identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, you may be eligible for an Indigenous Scholarship. These scholarships assist with residential or academic costs for students commencing study at UNE.
3. Prepare 4. Submit
Gather any documents required for your chosen scholarships, such as proof of address, financial statements, or referee reports. Having these ready before you start will make the process smoother.

A focus on flexibility
UNE allows you to shape university study around your needs, whether that means living and studying on campus or studying online. You’ll also have access to our dedicated Study Centres, and you can even choose to take a hybrid approach. We allow you to define how and where you study, to ensure you get the experience you want.
Study shaped around your life

At UNE, you don’t have to lock yourself into one way of studying. You can start on-campus or online, and switch between the two to suit your changing lifestyle. We’ve built our courses to be flexible, so your degree fits around you, not the other way around.
It’s common for students to begin their studies on-campus, living in our welcoming colleges, making friends and experiencing hands-on learning. Then, when life takes you in a new direction, whether it be for work opportunities, personal commitments or to experience travel, you can seamlessly transition into online study while keeping the same quality of education.
UNE’s hybrid approach means that no matter where you are studying, you will receive the same level of support. This means that you can get the best of both worlds.
For some students, starting study while being close to home is a convenient way to ease into the university lifestyle at your own pace. You can balance work and other personal commitments while still being close to your support unit. Later in your degree, especially if you’re studying a hands-on or practical degree, you can switch to on-campus learning to fully immerse yourself in the final stretch of your degree.
You’ll receive comprehensive, high-quality support no matter how you choose to study. Our courses have been designed specifically for flexibility, ensuring that changing study modes during your degree is an effortless shift.
UNE has successfully provided both on-campus and distance education to its students for over 70 years, longer than any other Australian university. UNE are experts in both online and on-campus education, leading Australian universities into the future of hybrid learning.
We’ve built our courses to be flexible, so your degree fits around you, not the other way around.

Mary White provided a strong academic support system and countless opportunities to grow socially and personally. Whether it was a study session, social event, or sports competition, there was always something to get involved in. Mary White wasn’t just a place to live; it was a place that built me up and prepared me for the real world in ways I never expected.

Study online
How does online study work?
Online study gives you the flexibility to fit study around your life. You set your own study schedule, giving you the freedom to balance coursework with personal and professional commitments. Courses may include readings, videos, quizzes, immersive learning experiences, and interactive content, all delivered online.
Our online learning platform provides 24/7 access to everything you need for your studies, including course materials, recorded lectures, interactive activities, discussion forums, and library resources. You’ll submit assignments online and, depending on your course, may complete online exams.
Some online units include intensive schools. These allow you to engage in practical exercises and classes that achieve specific learning outcomes not possible online. They are a valuable and enjoyable part of study, enriching your learning and helping you build networks. Some intensive schools are mandatory, while others are optional.
For more information on intensive schools, visit une.edu.au/intensive-schools
Comprehensive online tools and support
UNE’s online facilities make study simple and connected. You can ask questions, submit assignments, access resources, check grades, and even order library books, all available 24/7. Everything is set up to be user-friendly, so you can focus on your studies. Our platforms are designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring you can engage with your learning at a time and location that suits you.
Guidance from experienced educators
Learn from tutors and lecturers with real-world experience who provide personalised support and expert guidance to help you stay on track. Their goal is to make your learning journey easier and more rewarding, which is one of the reasons UNE has earned a 5-star rating for Overall Student Experience for 20 consecutive years.
Flexible access to course content
Access your course materials anytime, anywhere, and study at your own pace with a weekly plan provided by your lecturer. If life gets busy, you can easily catch up with recorded lectures and resources that are always available online.
Be part of a supportive community
Success in online study is about more than just access to resources. Through UNE’s online learning platform, you’ll connect with classmates, academic staff, and support staff to share insights, ask questions, and navigate challenges together.

Louise Luu BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (K-12 TEACHING)
A friend mentioned to me that UNE was the leading online university in Australia at the time. Everything was extremely user-friendly and easy to understand. There were great support systems in place, and they had extensive resources.

Oorala Aboriginal Centre
About Oorala
For 40 years, the Oorala Aboriginal Centre has proudly served Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students of UNE, offering specialised services and programs designed to enhance their university experience and academic success.
The name “Oorala” was chosen by UNE students enrolled at UNE when the Centre first opened in 1986. It is derived from the local Anaiwan word “urala” meaning “a camp” or “a place where people come together”. Our name reflects the historical significance of the site and its connection with the local community. Our name also highlights the Centre’s significance as a place that draws together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from right across Australia to the high country of New England.
Oorala student experience
Our dedicated team at Oorala is on-hand to provide information and advice about all aspects of studying at UNE. We are your key point of contact from the time you apply through to the time you graduate, and every moment in between. Students often ask us about:
• Managing enrolment: enrolling in units, withdrawing from units and taking a leave of absence
• Study load: how many units you should study to suit your commitments
• Assignment extensions
• Deferring an exam or applying for special consideration
• Access to our FREE tutoring program
• Scholarships: what’s available and how to apply
• Accessing other specialised UNE services such as Counselling, Advocacy & Welfare and Accessibility and Wellbeing
Our people
The team at Oorala is focused on your academic success and wellbeing while you are a student at UNE.
We acknowledge that your success also means a great deal to your community. We work hard to help you to make your career aspirations a reality, and have a diverse team who will walk alongside you on your study journey.
Our place
The Centre is a culturally safe study space located on the Armidale campus and is accessible for on-campus students, as well as our online students who will visit the campus throughout the year. Make sure that when you are in town, you call in to meet our team and use our amazing facilities.
All students have access to the Indigenous Students Hub on myLearn. This is Oorala’s virtual space where you can connect with us, with other students and access a wealth of resources and opportunities to support your study at UNE.

Oorala Aboriginal Centre supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at every stage of their university journey. These programs are designed to help you prepare for study, build your skills, and access opportunities that support your academic success and future career. DIPLOMA IN EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
I have used every support Oorala offers to help me succeed with my university studies at UNE. The tutoring program has been one of the most helpful tools I have used to help me study, especially for exams or assignments. I would recommend to make use of every service that Oorala and UNE offer, and apply for every scholarship that you qualify for as scholarships make studying less stressful.
Tutoring program
Oorala offers free tutoring to eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with up to 30 hours available per unit enrolment (plus extra support during intensives and exams). Sessions cover unit content, study planning, exam prep, academic writing, and referencing, and are available both on campus and online.
