• University and HE sector experiencing considerable financial challenges.
• SUs are also not immune.
• Almost all funding we get comes from University
• Undeb spending more than the income it receives
• Recent reduction in block grant funding of £150K (we negotiated a spread over 3 years).
• Unexpected increase in national insurance contributions.
• Our future financial situation is extremely uncertain. There are no guarantees that we will not receive more reductions in block grant in 2 years' time.
• If we do nothing, we ultimately run out of money.
• Reduced spending on pay and non pay.
• Reduced travel expenditure.
• Streamlined vehicles.
• Reduced spending across most budget lines.
• Got sponsorship for SU and larger events and via advertising.
• Continuing to explore revenue streams such as sponsorship.
• Free clubs and societies for 12 years.
• Worked hard over recent years to keep the current model.
• Even before reductions in funding, rising costs meant the current model was fast becoming unsustainable.
• Cost to the SU of running free clubs and societies over £400,000
• Majority of other SUs across the sector already have similar models where students pay to
Goal is to create a fair, sustainable, and accessible model that supports all clubs and societies while keeping costs as low as possible. These principles are:
No individual sports club fees – Students will not be required to pay separate fees for each sports club they join.
No individual society fees – Membership fees will not be charged on a persociety basis, allowing students to join multiple societies.
Financial sustainability – The model will ensure all clubs and societies can continue to operate, covering a portion of the costs required to run our groups.
Keeping costs as low as possible – While necessary for the long-term sustainability of our groups, any fees will be set to be as affordable and accessible as possible.
Providing value for money – We are working to ensure that we can still operate and support all of our clubs and societies, given the financial challenges we are facing, and in line with how other students’ union’s function and is competitive.
Supporting students facing financial hardship – We are looking into ways to support students who are facing financial hardship to help towards the cost of any fees.
The fee model will not cover all costs of
