2014 North Dakota Soccer MISSION

It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 studentathletes on 21 teams at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

2014 North Dakota Soccer One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

Steve Westereng

With a staff of 11 faculty athletic trainers, three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

Director of Sports Medicine

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

2014 North Dakota Soccer

The University of North Dakota boasts a proud history of varsity athletics nicknames. UND’s first official athletics nickname was the “Flickertails,” although its origin remains somewhat a mystery. The nickname made its first public appearance in a Grand Forks Herald account of UND’s football loss to Minnesota on Oct. 8, 1904, 15 years after UND’s first athletics contest was played. According to Lee Bohnet’s A Century of UND Sports, “The author was not identified, but there is strong evidence the nickname was coined by a Minneapolis sportswriter who may have covered the game for the Herald. The writer lauded the fighting spirit of the North Dakota players.”

The University of North Dakota adopted the interlocking ND as its official logo during the summer of 2012 following the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The interlocking ND will be utilized until 2015, when a new athletics nickname

In 1911, UND’s student body officially adopted “Flickertails” as its athletics nickname. UND would remain known as the “Flickertails” (as well, unofficially, as the “Nodaks”) for a third of a century, establishing an early athletics history. In the fall of 1930, the university adopted the nickname “Sioux” for its varsity teams following a successful renaming campaign by the Dakota Student, UND’s student newspaper. The word “Fighting” was later added, and UND would be known as the “Fighting Sioux” until the summer of 2012. The university utilized several”Fighting Sioux” logos throughout the decades, perhaps most notably the green geometric logo introduced in 1976 and the most recent full-color logo was unveiled in 1999. The former was designed by an artist at the UND News Bureau, while the latter was created by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien.

UND’s most recent Fighting Sioux logo, designed by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien, was unveiled in 1999. The logo was named the No. 1 hockey logo in the world by The Hockey News in 2009.

The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo prior to the 2012-13 athletics season. UND’s varsity athletics teams will operate without an official nickname until 2015. The university’s varsity athletics teams will be referred to as “the University of North Dakota,” “North Dakota,” or “UND.”

The geometric Fighting Sioux logo was introduced in 1976 and remained in use through the 1999-2000 season.

The current University of North Dakota logo has been in use since the close of Centennial year activities in 1984. It serves as the official logo of the University, but typically is not used for athletics purposes. Following the University’s first athletic competition in 1889, UND’s earliest teams were known unofficially as the “Nodaks” (pictured above is the 1896 football team). The “Flickertails” nickname made its first appearance in a 1904 Grand Forks Herald article and was officially adopted in 1911.

PRESIDENT Dr. Robert Kelley

The 11th president of the University of North Dakota, Dr. Robert Kelley spearheaded UND’s development of “Exceptional UND,” a vision roadmap that outlines five strategic priorities: Enrich the Student Experience; Encourage Gathering; Facilitate Collaboration; Expand UND’s Presence; Enhance Quality of Life. Under his leadership, UND has made great strides in all of these areas since “Exceptional UND” was adopted in 2010. A leader with a national reputation, Kelley began serving as UND’s president on July 1, 2008. Prior to that, he served as the dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming since 1999. Before then, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine, both at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the University of New Mexico, he served as chair of anatomy and senior executive associate dean for the School of Medicine. He also taught at the University of California, Berkeley. Kelley’s international appointments include service as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Biomedicine at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia (2006); a Visiting Professor at St. George’s School of Medicine in St. George, Grenada (a two-week annual appointment from 1996 to the present); a Consultant to the Prime Minister of Nepal through the U.S. State Department for the purpose of development of a medical school with a Western curriculum in Kathmandu, Nepal (1991); a Visiting Professor at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1990); a Visiting Research Professor in the Department of Developmental Biology at the National Institute for Basic Biology, Okazaki National Research Institutes in Okazaki, Japan (1984-85); an International Exchange Scholar for the National Science Foundation International Division at the University of Poona in India (1982); and a Visiting Research Fellow at The Hubrecht Laboratory for Developmental Biology in Utrecht, The Netherlands (1972-73). Kelley has served as chair of the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), chaired the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC, and was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, which is responsible for the U.S. medical licensure examination. In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also served as principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), a National Institutes of Health program that promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming. Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene (Texas) Christian University in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969,

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Brian Faison

Brian Faison is in his seventh year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. During his tenure UND has successfully completed the five-year reclassification process to Division I. Alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Champions Club and endowment giving have enjoyed eight straight record years; $17.8 million in private funding has been secured for the first phase of the UND Athletics High Performance Center; and last year women’s ice hockey finished third and men’s hockey finished first nationally in total home attendance. Media coverage has continued to grow with multi-year, multi-sport broadcast agreements with Midco Sports Network and Fox College Sports for television, Clear Channel for radio with continuing expansion of all social media platforms. In the classroom, student-athletes have continued to excel: this past year a record number of student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the Fall and Spring semesters resulting in the highest GPA for the year in the history of the program; a school-record xxxxxx earned academic all-conference honors; six received CoSIDA All-District honors; four studentathletes were named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans; and, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s track and field all were recognized nationally for their academic performance. MATT KELLOGG Head Coach Years at UND: 2nd Years As Head Coach: 6th Hometown: Plainwell, Mich. Alma Mater: Butler (‘00)

Matt Kellogg begins his second season at the helm of the University of North Dakota soccer program in 2014. After being brought on in the spring of 2013, Kellogg began to make immediate changes to the culture at UND. Inheriting a team that went winless in its inaugural season of Big Sky play in 2012, Kellogg led the team to its first Big Sky win and a win over in-state rival North Dakota State in 2013. Additionally, UND doubled its goals-scored in conference play from 2012 and its goals-allowed in conference action also reduced drastically, from 29 in 2012 to 18 in 2013. Prior to arriving at North Dakota, Kellogg spent the previous three seasons as head women’s soccer coach at NCAA Division II Ferris State University. Prior to that, he served as assistant women’s soccer coach and recruiting coordinator at a pair of NCAA Division I schools, Morehead (Ky.) State University and the University of Kentucky.

Kellogg inherited a Ferris State team that went 3-13-3 in the year prior to his arrival and led the Bulldogs to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament in each of his three seasons at the helm. In 2012, FSU went 9-7-3 and advanced to the GLIAC semifinals for only the second time in program history, while two of Kellogg’s student-athletes earned all-region honors. His team also recorded a 3.65 grade point average, its third straight semester with a 3.30 or higher. In 2009, Kellogg’s lone season at Morehead State, the Eagles captured the program’s first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season championship with a 5-0-3 conference record (8-7-4 overall). At Kentucky, Kellogg served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. Prior to his stint at UK, Kellogg spent three seasons (2004-07) as an assistant coach at Western Michigan University. He also was the head women’s soccer coach at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College from December 2002 to February 2004 after being an assistant at the school for the 2002 season. Kellogg has also spent several seasons working for the United States Olympic Development Program in various coaching roles. Kellogg is a 2000 graduate of Butler University in Indianapolis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and was a two-year letterwinner on the soccer team. He also participated in track and field for one season. Kellogg earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Western Michigan in 2005. Kellogg holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Goalkeeping Certificate. Kellogg inherited a Ferris State program that had gone 3-13-1 in 2009 and guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament in each of his three seasons.

Assistant Coach

Years at UND: 2nd season

Years at UND: 1st season

Hometown: Stubbington, England

Hometown: Redmond, Wash.

Alma Mater: Stetson (‘09)

Alma Mater: North Dakota (‘15)

Steph Webb is in her second season as an assistant coach with the UND soccer program. Webb came to UND after serving as an assistant coach in 2012 at Stetson University -- where she had been a two-year letterwinner -- following a stint as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. Webb joined the Central Michigan staff prior to the 2010 season and helped lead the Chippewas to two stellar seasons. Webb had multiple responsibilities at CMU, serving as the program’s recruiting, training and scheduling coordinator. In 2010, Central Michigan finished with a 16-5-1 record, becoming one of two teams to win 10 conference games and earn 30 points since the MAC went to an 11-game format. CMU earned its second straight MAC regular season and tournament championship, while garnering the second NCAA tournament berth in as many seasons. In 2011, her second season with the Chippewas, Webb helped the team post their best winning percentage in program history, as the team finished 15-3-3 for a mark of .783. During both of Webb’s seasons with CMU, the Chippewas claimed the nation’s top grade point average with marks of 3.76 in 2010 and 3.70 in 2011.

After completing her four-year career, former UND defender Amanda Dahl joins the staff as an assistant coach for the North Dakota women’s soccer program in 2014. A two-time Big Sky All-Academic Team member and an All-Great West Conference Second Team honoree, Dahl played in a total of 68 games in her career. Dahl also served as a captain for her senior season, during Matt Kellogg’s first year as head coach. Dahl graduated with her bachelor’s in air traffic control from UND in May. She plans on coaching while waiting to get into the Federal Aviation Administration Academy to become an air traffic controller.

AARON SCHWENZFEIER Strength Coach Years at UND: 7th season

Prior to working with Central Michigan, Webb spent the previous year as the Technical Academy Director of the Palm Harbor Soccer Club. She organized training sessions, advised head coaches in their development, and put together plans for the entire U9 - U15 girls program.

Hometown: Hallock, Minn. Alma Mater: North Dakota (‘04)

Webb, who earned her master’s degree in sport administration from Central Michigan in 2012, received her bachelor’s degree at Stetson in 2009. The former forward played two seasons with the Hatters after transferring from Texas A&M International. She appeared in 25 matches, started six contests, and tallied three assists at Stetson. In 29 contests for TAMIU, she racked up 16 goals and a total of 36 points.

Former North Dakota football letterwinner Aaron Schwenzfeier returns for his seventh season on UND’s strength and conditioning staff in 2014-15.

After finishing her playing career in 2008, Webb stayed on at Stetson as an intern with the soccer program for the rest of her time as a student. She assisted with training sessions, organization of recruiting visits, academic support, and the program’s day-to-day operations. .

Schwenzfeier is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Schwenzfeier graduated from UND in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education after lettering three times as a running back on the football team.

Originally from Hallock, Minn., Schwenzfeier’s family includes his wife, Margo, and their children, Eva and Reggie.

A native of Stubbington, England, Webb holds a UEFA B Part 2 Coaching Badge and an NSCAA National Diploma.

2014 MEDIA GUIDE :: ASSISTANT COACHES/SUPPORT STAFF

2014 North Dakota Soccer

SEASON OUTLOOK The North Dakota soccer program enters its third year in the Big Sky Conference, and just its second under the tutelage of head coach Matt Kellogg. After going winless in its first year of the Big Sky Conference, Kellogg began to right the ship during the program’s second tour of conference action. UND won its first Big Sky Conference match, downing Eastern Washington 3-1 on Oct. 13. The team also doubled its goals scored in conference play, and its conference goals allowed also reduced drastically, from 29 in 2012 to 18 in 2013. Now Kellogg is tasked with continuing to plant the seeds of success and to build off the foundation that was put into place last year. With an incoming class made up 11 freshmen, Kellogg is looking to do just that. “We had a very good spring season with the returners,” Kellogg said. “There was a lot of player development and I think they’re starting to see the game at a higher level. It’s going to be a very exciting time this fall introducing these new pieces into that returning group, which has taken quite a few large steps in my time here.” “Our strength coach, Aaron Schwenzfeier, has done a tremendous job working with the returners to get them more athletic and it’s shown in the numbers; times have gotten quicker in all the testing that we’ve done. So not only are we bringing fast and athletic kids in with the freshman class, we’re developing them once they get here.” Goalkeepers A key to UND’s success this season will start in net with the return of Big Sky Conference saves leader senior Kristi Hestdalen. During last year’s campaign, Hestdalen played every minute of all 19 games, making a total of 131 saves, setting a single-season record at UND, while also breaking the career saves record at UND with 332. Kellogg brings in freshman Maia Lundstrom from White Bear Lake, Minn. He believes Lundstrom can compete for playing time this season and, with the mentorship of Hestdalen, can help lead the program to future success.

“My mentality is that we never head into fall camp with a starting goalkeeper job already handed out, but Kristi is a veteran player who has seen a lot of minutes and more shots than she’s needed to in her first three years here, which we’re hoping to tone back this season. Looking at it this season, whether it’s Kristi or Maia in net, we will be in a position to win games. Looking at the longevity of the program, it’s going to be great to have Kristi bring Maia along this year, and have Maia learn from one of the best goalies this program has had in Kristi,” said Kellogg. Defenders Sophomore Kirsten Olson and junior Abbey Welle lead the UND defense for the 2014 season. Junior captain Asia Laudal will redshirt the season after being sidelined by a preseason injury. Olson made the switch to defense after beginning her career at forward, but was a natural fit and helped lead the UND back line as a redshirt freshman. Welle was third on the team in minutes played last season, starting in all but one game. Coming into UND in 2013, Kellogg anticipated needing new defenders for the 2014 season and he brings in a core group of four freshmen to help fill in the missing pieces on the back line. Lexie Andres, Natalie Johnson, Tracy Mather, and Emily Smithson will all compete for time as starting defenders. Additionally, freshmen Liz McDowell and Aaliyah Danielson may also see time in a defensive role. “We’re going to be teaching a lot with that back group, but a large part of our freshman class was brought in to bolster the defense. We knew we were going to be playing a lot of young players on defense this year from the beginning, so it’s not a surprise to us, and I think they will be able to do just that. We have some really smart players who can catch on quickly to what we’re trying to do and will add depth to the back line,” said Kellogg. Midfield Senior captain Juliette Austin and junior captain Caitlin Dahl return to anchor UND’s midfield in 2014. Both Dahl and Austin played in all

UND opens the season on the road against in-state rival North Dakota State on Aug. 22.

19 games last season, with Dahl playing more of an attacking-mid position and Austin in a holding-mid role. Sophomore Michelle Stingle also played in all 19 games for UND last season and led the group with two goals. Additionally, Jessica Johnson returns in the midfield after redshirting last season. “The strategy for the midfield this year will be to simplify the game for us. They’re a very integral part in the system that we’re going to be playing this year, and because we know it’s a young group, we’re going to keep it very simple. I don’t want them to overthink things, and for them to realize that they can’t win the game in one pass,” said Kellogg. Freshmen Sydney Bravek, Sabrina Majerczyk and Liz McDowell will help fill out the rest of the middle third for Kellogg. Forwards UND returns three up top in juniors Andrea Hyduke, Marissa Ricci and sophomore Zoe Foster. After limited playing time their freshman seasons, Hyduke and Ricci played major roles last season as sophomores and combined for three goals and one assist. Foster stepped in as a true freshman last season and led the team in scoring with four goals and one assist. The continued potency of the trio will play a large part of UND success this season. “The group was young last year, not just in years, but in experience. However, that’s not to say that the talent is not there. The potential to score a lot of goals this year is there. We doubled our goals from 2012 to 2013 and we’re looking to do the same this year. If we can do that, then we’ll put ourselves in a great spot to compete for a championship,” said Kellogg. Kellogg additionally brings in freshmen Zoe Berlinquette, Austin Overson and Aaliyah Danielson to complement the three returning strikers. Schedule With the addition of Idaho to the Big Sky, the conference schedule looks to be even more grueling, but UND landed a favorable draw with five straight home matches in the middle of October. “We’ll be on the road a little bit and then we come home for a nice stand, which is beneficial because that’s also the time when the studies start to pile up. It’s right around the first midterms and the student-athletes are starting to get a dose reality with their academics.” Because the Big Sky Conference field grew to 11 with the addition of the Vandals, the top six teams will now make the postseason tournament, which will be held Nov. 6-7 & 9 at the campus of the regular-season champion. The nonconference portion of the schedule features the likes of regional rivals, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Northern Iowa. UND also takes on 2013 Big Ten champs Nebraska, Creighton, Green Bay and travels to Chicago State for the Cougars’ first home game in their inaugural season. UND opens the 2014 season with a road game against in-state rival North Dakota State on Aug. 22.
