2013 NORTH DAKOTA SOCCER MISSION

It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 studentathletes at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

2013 UND SOCCER One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

Steve Westereng

With a staff of 11 faculty athletic trainers, three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

Director of Sports Medicine

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

2013 UND SOCCER

The University of North Dakota boasts a proud history of varsity athletics nicknames. UND’s first official athletics nickname was the “Flickertails,” although its origin remains somewhat a mystery. The nickname made its first public appearance in a Grand Forks Herald account of UND’s football loss to Minnesota on Oct. 8, 1904, 15 years after UND’s first athletics contest was played. According to Lee Bohnet’s A Century of UND Sports, “The author was not identified, but there is strong evidence the nickname was coined by a Minneapolis sportswriter who may have covered the game for the Herald. The writer lauded the fighting spirit of the North Dakota players.”

The University of North Dakota adopted the interlocking ND as its official logo during the summer of 2012 following the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The interlocking ND will be utilized until 2015, when a new athletics nickname is selected.

In 1911, UND’s student body officially adopted “Flickertails” as its athletics nickname. UND would remain known as the “Flickertails” (as well, unofficially, as the “Nodaks”) for a third of a century, establishing an early athletics history. In the fall of 1930, the university adopted the nickname “Sioux” for its varsity teams following a successful renaming campaign by the Dakota Student, UND’s student newspaper. The word “Fighting” was later added, and UND would be known as the “Fighting Sioux” until the summer of 2012. The university utilized several”Fighting Sioux” logos throughout the decades, perhaps most notably the green geometric logo introduced in 1976 and the most recent full-color logo was unveiled in 1999. The former was designed by an artist at the UND News Bureau, while the latter was created by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien.

UND’s most recent Fighting Sioux logo, designed by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien, was unveiled in 1999. The logo was named the No. 1 hockey logo in the world by The Hockey News in 2009.

The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo prior to the 2012-13 athletics season. UND’s varsity athletics teams will operate without an official nickname until 2015. The university’s varsity athletics teams will be referred to as “the University of North Dakota,” “North Dakota,” or “UND.”

The geometric Fighting Sioux logo was introduced in 1976 and remained in use through the 1999-2000 season.

The current University of North Dakota logo has been in use since the close of Centennial year activities in 1984. It serves as the official logo of the University, but typically is not used for athletics purposes. Following the University’s first athletic competition in 1889, UND’s earliest teams were known unofficially as the “Nodaks” (pictured above is the 1896 football team). The “Flickertails” nickname made its first appearance in a 1904 Grand Forks Herald article and was officially adopted in 1911.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Brian Faison

Brian Faison is in his sixth year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. During his tenure UND has successfully completed the five-year reclassification process to Division I. Alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Champions Club and endowment giving have enjoyed seven straight record years, $16.5 million in funding has been secured for Phase I of the UND Athletics High Performance Center with groundbreaking set for this fall; and last season men’s hockey finished first and women’s hockey fourth nationally in home attendance. Media coverage has continued to grow with multi-year, multi-sport broadcast agreements with Midco Sports Network for television and Clear Channel for radio, with continuing expansion of social media. In the classroom, student-athletes have continued to excel: this past year a record number of student-athletes were named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for the fall and spring semesters; a school-record 186 earned academic allconference honors; six received academic all-district honors; three studentathletes were named Academic All-Americans; two received prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships (the program’s 35th and 36th recipients); and, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field all were recognized nationally for their academic performance. Competition for UND last year resulted in three teams advancing to post-season play, five All-Americans and 120 student-athletes earning athletic conference, national or all-conference team honors. Faison helped secure membership in the Big Sky Conference (BSC) for 14 of UND sports and landed men’s swimming and diving and baseball in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) joining women’s swimming and diving. He also played a leadership role in the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) joining Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, St.Cloud State, Western Michigan and Nebraska Omaha. With over 30 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, Faison has served on several conference, regional and national sports committees. He currently chairs the NCHC Board of Directors, is a member of the BSC Eligibility and Administration committees, and serves on the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee. Prior to joining UND he served as special assistant to the president (200408) and director of athletics at New Mexico State University (1999-04). Before that, he was national director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-99). Faison has also served as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (198895), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-88) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-84). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations (197879) and assistant director for alumni activities (1974-78) at the University of Missouri. Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley, and a grandson, Harrison.

Kellogg inherited a Ferris State team that went 3-13-3 in the year prior to his arrival and led the Bulldogs to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament in each of his three seasons at the helm. In 2012, FSU went 9-7-3 and advanced to the GLIAC semifinals for only the second time in program history, while two of Kellogg’s student-athletes earned all-region honors. His team also recorded a 3.65 grade point average, its third straight semester with a 3.30 or higher. In 2009, Kellogg’s lone season at Morehead State, the Eagles captured the program’s first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season championship with a 5-0-3 conference record (8-7-4 overall). At Kentucky, Kellogg served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. Prior to his stint at UK, Kellogg spent three seasons (2004-07) as an assistant coach at Western Michigan University. He also was the head women’s soccer coach at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College from December 2002 to February 2004 after being an assistant at the school for the 2002 season. Kellogg has also spent several seasons working for the United States Olympic Development Program in various coaching roles. “I want to thank Brian and (senior associate athletics director/senior woman administrator) Daniella (Irle) and the rest of the selection committee for giving me this great opportunity,” Kellogg said at the time of his hiring. “When I visited campus and talked with different people in the department, it became very apparent that the athletics department and the University are very committed to winning and doing it the right way. I was very impressed by this and wanted to be a part of it.” Kellogg is a 2000 graduate of Butler University in Indianapolis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and was a two-year letterwinner on the soccer team. He also participated in track and field for one season. Kellogg earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Western Michigan in 2005. Kellogg holds an United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Goalkeeping Certificate.

Kellogg inherited a Ferris State program that had gone 3-13-1 in 2009 and guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament in each of his three seasons.

STEPH WEBB Assistant Coach

Assistant Coach

Years at UND: 1st season

Years at UND: 1st season

Hometown: Stubbington, England

Hometown: Pensacola, Fla.

Alma Mater: Stetson (‘09)

Alma Mater: Kennesaw State (‘13)

Steph Webb is in her first season as an assistant coach with the UND soccer program. Webb came to UND after serving as an assistant coach in 2012 at Stetson University -- where she had been a two-year letterwinner -- following a stint as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. Webb joined the Central Michigan staff prior to the 2010 season and helped lead the Chippewas to two stellar seasons. Webb had multiple responsibilities at CMU, serving as the program’s recruiting, training and scheduling coordinator. In 2010, Central Michigan finished with a 16-5-1 record, becoming one of two teams to win 10 conference games and earn 30 points since the MAC went to an 11-game format. CMU earned its second straight MAC regular season and tournament championship, while garnering the second NCAA tournament berth in as many seasons. In 2011, her second season with the Chippewas, Webb helped the team post their best winning percentage in program history, as the team finished 15-3-3 for a mark of .783. During both of Webb’s seasons with CMU, the Chippewas claimed the nation’s top grade point average with marks of 3.76 in 2010 and 3.70 in 2011. Prior to working with Central Michigan, Webb spent the previous year as the Technical Academy Director of the Palm Harbor Soccer Club. She organized training sessions, advised head coaches in their development, and put together plans for the entire U9 - U15 girls program.

Melissa Raguse (formerly Hutto) joins the North Dakota coaching staff in 2013 after a standout collegiate career as a goalkeeper at Kennesaw State. Raguse appeared in 36 matches, including 26 starts, in four years with KSU and recorded a 1.27 goals against average, 141 career saves and six shutouts. Her best season was her junior campaign of 2011, when she started 16 of the Owls’ 17 matches and had a 1.36 goals against average and four shutouts. Raguse, originally from Pensacola, Fla., graduated from KSU in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and health science.

AARON SCHWENZFEIER Strength Coach Years at UND: 6th season Hometown: Hallock, Minn. Alma Mater: North Dakota (‘04)

Webb, who earned her master’s degree in sport administration from Central Michigan in 2012, received her bachelor’s degree at Stetson in 2009. The former forward played two seasons with the Hatters after transferring from Texas A&M International. She appeared in 25 matches, started six contests, and tallied three assists at Stetson. In 29 contests for TAMIU, she racked up 16 goals and a total of 36 points.

Former North Dakota football letterwinner Aaron Schwenzfeier returns for his sixth season on UND’s strength and conditioning staff in 2013-14.

After finishing her playing career in 2008, Webb stayed on at Stetson as an intern with the soccer program for the rest of her time as a student. She assisted with training sessions, organization of recruiting visits, academic support, and the program’s day-to-day operations. .

Schwenzfeier is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

A native of Stubbington, England, Webb holds a UEFA B Part 2 Coaching Badge and an NSCAA National Diploma.

2013 UND SOCCER

SEASON OUTLOOK Matt Kellogg has been through this before. North Dakota’s first-year head coach spent the past three years at Ferris State University, where he had inherited a program that had gone 3-13-3 the previous season. Kellogg immediately reversed the Bulldogs fortunes, leading them to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in each of his three seasons, his final season highlighted by just the second GLIAC semifinal berth in program history. Now Kellogg is tasked with breathing new life into a UND soccer program that went winless in its first tour through the Big Sky Conference. Armed with his FSU experience, as well as successful stints as an assistant at Kentucky and Morehead State, Kellogg is undeterred. “The biggest thing is that the players have already bought into our team concepts,” said Kellogg. “Couple that with the great work ethic that’s been shown in the preseason, and that leads me to believe that they’re going to have success. “This is a transition year. We’re righting the ship. We’re laying the foundation. For me, it’s about the process. If you’re just focused on the win and you don’t care how you got it, you’re going to have good days and bad days. But if you’re all about the process and how to get it done, you’re going to have success more consistently. This group has shown that they’re willing to put in the work.” Goalkeepers Kellogg knows he can rely early and often on a returning standout in junior Kristi Hestdalen. Hestdalen ranked second in the Big Sky in saves and saves per game last season and provides a young team with stability at a key position.

“She brings a lot of experience to the table and we’re looking for her to have another great year, to build on the success she had last year,” said Kellogg. Incoming freshman Sydney Karr will provide depth at the position and is more than capable of filling a larger role if needed. Defenders Seniors Amanda Dahl and Anna Jung headline this unit, although both are new to the position. Dahl, a former forward, and Jung, a former midfielder, boasted a combined 102 games of experience at the collegiate level. “Amanda is an absolute pit bull out there wherever you put her. She’s going to scrap and give you everything she has. She’s going to be a great asset attacking out of the back. Anna is looking to solidify an outside back position. She brings a lot of attacking strength from the defensive position, which is an asset to have in our system,” said Kellogg. Sophomore Jensen Forbes, redshirt freshmen Kirsten Olson and incoming freshman Alexa White will also push for playing time, while another incoming freshman, Kelsey Cartwright, could supply depth as either a defender or midfielder. Midfielders Kellogg welcomes a talented blend of upperclassmen and underclassmen at the position, including the team’s top returning scorer from a year ago, senior Noel Scherer. “Noel is definitely an impact player, but right now we’re still trying to figure out where she fits the best. Because she has so many strengths, we’re trying to figure out what is going to be the most beneficial for the team,” said Kellogg.

UND faces its first Big Sky opponent at home against Sacramento State on Sept. 21.

Another fourth-year player, Courtney Beckwith, will be a valuable veteran presence if she can shake the injury misfortune that has plagued her career. She missed all of her junior season due to injury. “Courtney brings a great work rate to the midfield,” said Kellogg. “She causes a lot of problems for the defense because she’s so active in the middle.” Sophomore Juliette Austin provides veteran composure, particularly in the transition game, while sophomores Jessica Johnson and Abbey Welle will add depth after converting from forward. Among the freshmen, Kellogg pointed to Robyn Wujkowski as a likely contributor from the outset. “Robyn will be an attacking player for us and should make an immediate impact. She’s a very dynamic player,” said Kellogg. Forwards Youth is the theme at the forward position, where six of the eight players are either freshmen or sophomores. One of those freshmen is Zoe Foster, who has emerged as a player to watch in 2013. “We’re looking for her to step on the field right away and make an impact,” said Kellogg. “She’s very comfortable around the goal and can make some dynamic runs that are going to pull apart defenses.” Marissa Ricci will join Foster at the central forward position after spending her freshman campaign as a defender. “She has the intelligence and the soccer IQ to do well for us there,” said Kellogg. “It’s just going to take a little bit of time for her to get used to a new part of the field.” Senior Kaylynn Burgess, sophomore Andrea Hyduke and Green Bay sophomore transfer Asia Laudal bring additional veteran experience, while freshmen Ashlee Beckwith, Caitlin Dahl and Michelle Stingle will push for playing time. Schedule Although he is new to the Big Sky, Kellogg is fully aware of the challenges posed by the league schedule. But he says non-conference matches against the likes of Iowa State, Creighton, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Xavier and Creighton will serve his team well. “It’s setting up to be a great nonconference season for us,” said Kellogg. “We have two Big East opponents and a Big 12 opponent on the schedule, so for RPI sake we’re going against some of the top conferences in the nation. It’s going to set us up well for a run in the conference.” 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

2013 UND SOCCER The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. Doug Fullerton Commissioner

The Big Sky Conference celebrates 50 years of men’s athletics and 25 years of women’s competition during the 2013-14 academic year.

The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. It is “The Heart of the American West.” On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference.

The venerable and stable Division I Big Sky Conference observed its 50th birthday on July 1, 2013. To mark the historic occasion, the league will honor its past by commemorating its top male and female athletics, as well as the top moments The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. and teams. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, Four of the current league members – Idaho State University, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on The University of Montana, Montana State and Weber State a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., – have been with the league since its birth. Fellow charter legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big member the University of Idaho will bring the majority of its Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his sports back to the Big Sky on July 1, 2014. Northern Arizona athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the University enters its 45th season in the league, giving the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesmanleague fi ve members with at least 40 years of continuous Review called for the newly formed league to be named the membership. Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky Conference welcomed North Dakota and Southern Utah on July 1, 2012 as full members. UC Davis and Cal Poly joined as football affiliate members. Eastern Washington University, the University of Northern Colorado, Portland State University and Sacramento State round out the current membership.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. The Big Sky sponsored softball for the first time in 2013. Men’s golf will return as a conference sport in 2014-15.

The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past five seasons. The Big Sky is one of three conferences in the western United States playing Division I football.

In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington.

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 19th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.

BRONSON FIELD

HOME OF NORTH DAKOTA SOCCER

Pictured above, The Betty Englestad Sioux Center provides locker room facilities for the UND soccer team along with the coaching offices. “The Betty” opened in August 2004 and is also home to the UND volleyball and basketball teams.

Bronson Field is within walking distance of the UND campus, The Betty Englestad Sioux Center and Ralph Englestad Arena, along with multiple dining facilities.

North Dakota had 1,844 fans in attendance during the 2007 season, which is the program’s single-season record.

Above, UND’s Bronson Field’s new scoreboard for the 2008 season. Right, lockers are set up for the UND players before action.
