harles C. Mann, an acclaimed author specializing in scientific non-fiction, traveled to UNCW on March 27th to discuss his book 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created. Interdisciplinary Seminar: Say What?

Alumni News: Continuing the Honors Tradition Adam Murray (B. A. Philosophy and Religion ‘01) received his masters in Library Science from UNCG and is now Dean of University Libraries at Murray State University in Kentucky.

Kathleen Morrow (B.S. Marine Biology ’03) completed her masters at California State University Northridge in Kelp Forest Ecology, then received her Ph.D. from Auburn University, studying the physical and chemical impact of macroalgae on coral-associated microbes. She is currently doing post-doctoral research at the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville, Australia.

Melissa Meadows (B.S. Marine Biology ’04) completed her dissertation and defense for a Ph.D in Biology at Arizona State University in April. She will be doing several years of post-doctoral research at Universität Tübingen in Germany beginning this summer.

Jamie Brummit (B.A. Philosophy and Religion ‘11) has been accepted to the Ph.D. program in Religious Studies at Duke University for fall 2012.

[Continued from page 1] From an early age, we have been taught about Christopher Columbus and his impact on America.

We heard anecdotes about peaceful foreign relations, adventure, and conquests free of ulterior motives.

These are nice bedtime stories, but we learned from Mann that these anecdotes do not represent accurate perceptions about early America.

Mann offered a broader perspective, and did not focus on only the negative aspects of Columbus’s expedition. Columbus, in a way, expanded and shrank the world. He paved the way for increased knowledge, curiosity, and awareness while making resources, such as corn and wheat, more available around the globe through trade.

In contrast, diseases like syphilis and malaria traveled with Columbus and the Europeans, ending in tragedy and the biological genocide of cultures native to the New World.

Mann’s lecture exemplified the interdisciplinary aspect of his research by interweaving a variety of topics. Discoveries pertaining to Columbus’ effect on

the New World appeal to those studying anthropology, biology, geography, literature, languages, agronomy, history, and other areas of interest.

In his presentation, Mann did not portray himself as a stereotypical, detached science writer; he utilized personal stories and photographs to rhetorically convey his participation in fieldwork.

Combining the Irish Potato famine, wheat and sweet potato farming in China, the spread of malaria and its enabling of slavery, and a grand silver strike in Spain is not a simple task, but the nature of Mann’s extensive findings support his claim that correlating a wide variety of topics is possible.

During the lecture I found myself awestruck that a great deal of history occurred due to subtle characteristics of our world that Columbus himself allowed. Mann instilled the eager audience with the realization that the world was—and is—prone to dramatic change by seemingly small catalysts.

Mann presented a free lecture, open to the public, on March 27th, and followed this with a day on campus visiting several classes and discussing topics with students and faculty.

I

f anyone had told me my freshman year that this is what I was going to be doing after college, I would not have believed them. Although this is a seemingly typical confession of a college senior, the experiences that lead to this moment vary wildly from student to student.

Honestly, it was one email from a local Teach for America (TFA) representative that changed everything. I was in the process of interviewing for a myriad of different jobs, and I decided that applying for TFA would be a good idea.

For those not familiar with it, TFA is a non-profit organization that places recent college graduates in high-need schools around the United States to teach for two years. It was the TFA application process itself that strengthened my desire to pursue teaching as a career. Also, my expe-

rience with faculty and administration on our campus demonstrated how fulfilling working with students could be.

After applying, phone interviewing, and participating in an on-site interview with Teach for America, I received an offer to teach middle or high school science in the San Francisco Bay area.

Teaching science in California is an opportunity of a lifetime. The state is a global leader in research and progressive environmental legislation. I truly cannot wait to lead my first class outside in the teeming ecosystems California has to offer.

I do feel sadness leaving my home in Wilmington and all of my amazing experiences as a Seahawk. UNCW and the Honors College in particular have truly built me from a lost freshman into a confident leader, and for that I will be forever grateful.

Periplus: What is your history with UNCW? Austin: I worked in the UNCW Office of Admissions as a transfer coordinator from September 2008 until February Austin Scott in Washington, D.C. 2012.

Periplus: What is your favorite part of working for the Honors College?

Austin: My favorite part of working with the Honors College is being able to interact with high-achieving students. I was an honors student myself.

Periplus: What are your goals for the Honors College?

Austin: My goals include raising scholarships, developing relationships with alumni, and increasing transfer student enrollment.

Periplus: What are you most looking forward to in this position?

Austin: Watching current students become alums who return home to the Honors College to share their experience with new Honors College students.

Periplus: What is your advice for Honors students who may want to work in a university setting later in life?

Austin: Take advantage of the opportunities you have as a student to get involved in your university because those opportunities will be gone forever after graduation. Be proud of where you came from--UNCW. Periplus: What are your hobbies and interests?

Now it might surprise you to hear that, even with the ability to run five miles in under twenty-six minutes, these men have not always been runners.

Neither Wil nor Kelly, both seniors now, had any ambition of running in college when they first started cross country.

Kelly started running his freshman year of high school to train for basketball, and Wil didn’t even start until his sophomore year. Yet all three share a similar Three Honors College scholars are members of the UNCW understanding as to why they run.

CSURF Funding: Challenge Accepted The UNCW Board of Visitors exceeds Chancellor Miller’s expectations by raising $72,000 Chancellor Gary L. Miller’s commitment to undergraduate research has resulted in increased funding and support through CSURF this spring. The UNCW Board of Visitors responded to the Chancellors’ request for major investment in research supplies and travel money to enable undergraduates to present their work at conferences.

At the spring Board of Visitors meeting, Chair Eric Rosenberg announced that it had already exceeded the Chancellor’s challenge, but the board was far from finished with its support for undergraduate research.

The CSURF seventh annual showcase in April included more than 100 presentations from students representing all Colleges and Schools on campus. CSURF also funded travel for students who attend regional and national conferences with their faculty mentors to present their research.

CSURF also funds undergraduate research fellowships and applications for research supplies and materials on a competitive basis.

This year, more than 60 undergraduate students were co-authors on conference presentations, and 20 of them were recognized as Undergraduate Research Scholars - students who presented their research on multiple occasions, submitted manuscripts for publication, or received national or regional recognition for their research activity.

A Friend of Honors: Ann Sherman Skiba A local philanthropist continues to touch lives through her endowment to UNCW The late Ann Sherman Skiba, a former member of the UNCW Board of Visitors, created a $250,000 endowment to support undergraduate research before she passed away in March 2012. The Ann Sherman Skiba Fund for Undergraduate Research and Community Engagement sponsors undergraduate research projects, especially those targeted at research that

supports not-for-profit organizations. A longtime friend and benefactor to UNCW, Ann Skiba was named “Citizen of the Year” for 2012 by the UNCW Alumni Association for her work on behalf of the University and other Wilmington civic organizations.

The Fund is administered by the Honors College via CSURF.

This semester brought some changes to the Honors Student Media Board. Our Gillian Perry- Editor fearless leader Christine Stark has been Christine Stark - Editor Abroad Jamie Watson - Junior Editor abroad, and I’ve been largely managing our publications and day-to-day work Bill Atwill - Advisor with our new Junior Editor, Jamie Watson.

We have updated design elements of the Staff Writers: newsletter to better reflect the Honors Elizabeth Bernardo College connection to our campus and to Dylan Figlo the Wilmington Community.

In Your Corner: Speaking of going abroad, the summer is bringing international explorations for many honors students and faculty. I think we were all inspired by Charles Mann earlier in the semester to want to check out other countries and cultures. A highlight for Honors will be a group making a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain this summer... and I am excited about climbing Mt. Olympus in Greece!
