NOTE FROM THE ADVISORY COUNCIL CHAIR

Every year, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNCW offers a wide array of diverse programs and events designed to engage and stimulate our community of learners. Each semester we have variations of a core curriculum. We may add programs and/or we may discontinue programs for a semester or two. We are always updating programs to determine their current relevance. Working with our volunteer committees, we review the learning objectives, surveys and relevance of every program.

OLLI at UNCW has some of the greatest variety and number of program offerings compared to other OLLI organizations in the country. Forums with societies; National Theatre and Met Opera in HD, as well as unique and high quality academic courses, many taught by UNCW faculty, are all very popular. There are the dinner and luncheon speaker series; outdoor, leisure and wellness programs; regional and international travel. The volunteer Advisory Council continues to be the “eyes and ears” of the OLLI membership. We provide guidance and input, reflecting member interests and suggesting improvements to the overall programming and successful operation of our organization to keep it healthy and vibrant for our community of learners. OLLI at UNCW can also be an important link to many of UNCW resources. Look for emails from our staff regarding special activities on campus in which members can participate.

With technology now fully incorporated into our educational system, we will be looking at ways to utilize technology more effectively into our OLLI at UNCW curriculum by implementing more interactive options, possibly with groups/classes in other geographic locations and learning engagement opportunities outside a traditional classroom setting. However, continuing to provide social, interactive learning opportunities remains a priority. Connection and community help keep people happier, content and healthy. We know that approximately 80 percent of our membership has relocated to Wilmington for their retirement or “third age” of living and look to OLLI at UNCW to engage and connect with others. We provide opportunities for you to get to know your new community and it is always changing.

Please seriously consider volunteering on a committee or a variety of other volunteer opportunities to improve and grow OLLI. Volunteers are the backbone of this organization!

At the Osher Foundation National Conference, I had the pleasure of visiting with Bernard Osher and shared some of our successes with him. He remembers, with fondness, his visit to UNCW with his wife Barbro in 2010, to receive their honorary doctorates.

The mission of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNCW is to be the premier lifelong learning opportunity for members 50 years of age or older in Southeast North Carolina who seek academic, social and experiential learning. This is achieved through:

OLLI at UNCW is a membership organization which seeks to foster lifelong learning opportunities, individual growth and social connection. Funded in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation, we are part of a national network of 120 lifelong learning institutes on college and university campuses in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The common threads among members of the network are: lifelong learning programs specifically developed for “seasoned” adults age 50+; university connection and support; volunteer leadership; faculty engagement and a diverse selection of intellectually stimulating courses.

1. Fostering a high-quality, intellectually stimulating curricula centered on programs developed and led by university faculty, fellow OLLI members and others throughout the region.

The Roaring 1920s roared a little louder in Florida. Babe Ruth, the Marx Brothers, Al Capone and other celebrities, along with millions of ordinary dreamers and schemers, flocked to Florida seeking a life of perpetual wealth, style and leisure. For a while they prospered, but eventually savage hurricanes and plain old greed ended the good times.

The music of James Taylor and John Denver continues to entertain large audiences with their record sales even today. Both singer/songwriters have carved out their own fan base over the years with extraordinary numbers.

Although their musical styles were somewhat different, they had more in common than it appears. Both have a folksy, country pop style to their writing, play guitar very well and both sing about the joy they feel for life and love. Bruschi will discuss their successes and the trials and tribulations of their early careers in this educational and entertaining program. The talented performer, Bruschi, sings such songs as “Carolina In My Mind,” “Fire and Rain,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” “Take Me Home Country Roads” and many more.

Join Willie Drye, a National Geographic News contributing editor and author of FOR SALE: American Paradise (winner of a 2016 IPPY Award Silver Medal for Best Nonfiction), as he tells a tale of a colorful and tragicomic era during which the allure and illusion of the American Dream were on full display.

Science and Religion: The Vatican Secret Archive and Space Observatory with Diana Pasulka, Ph.D. and Timothy Taylor, NASA Tuesday, April 24 Noon – 1:30 p.m. • $26 Diana Pasulka is a UNCW professor and chair of the philosophy and religion department, and Tim Taylor is a NASA scientist and professor of religion.

Together they will discuss their research on the connections between early modern ideas of space and its effect on religious cosmologies. They will show pictures and images from a research trip to the Vatican Secret Archive and the Vatican Space Observatory, where they perused original records of Johannes Kepler and spoke to the scientist-monks about their work in the observatory.

ACADEMIC COURSES ART HISTORY Rethinking Impressionism with Parme Giuntini, Ph.D. Art History Wednesdays, Feb. 14 – March 7 Four sessions • 1 – 2:30 p.m. $60

QUEEN VICTORIA

Queen Victoria and the Victorian Novel with Elliot Engel, Ph.D. Wednesday, May 16 6 – 8 p.m. • $40 Elliot Engel examines the incredible and bizarre childhood of Queen Victoria, which had as many twists and turns as the brilliant novels written during her reign. He then explores the unique artistic genius animating the 40,000 novels written during this remarkably fertile literary period.

Using anecdotes, analysis, and large doses of humor, Professor Engel brings to life this most universal of topics. Engel has taught at UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University and Duke University. He earned his Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. Engel has written 10 books, multiple plays and a PBS series on Charles Dickens. For his scholarship and teaching, he received North Carolina’s Adult Education Award, NC State’s Alumni Professorship and the Victorian Society’s Award of Merit. Most recently, for his 30 years of academic work and service in promoting Charles Dickens, he was nominated and inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in England.

People often think of Impressionism as a movement that produced pretty pictures of gardens, ballerinas, Paris street scenes and, of course, waterlilies. Take a look at Impressionism and discover that beyond those pretty pictures, Impressionism jolted the 19th-century world with challenges to aesthetics, class and social relationships, even gender codes and politics.

Parme Giuntini is a recent transplant from Los Angeles, CA, where she was director of art history at Otis College of Art and Design for 20 years. Her research focuses on 18th-century domestic portraiture, fashion, gender, design and pedagogy.

Leonardo da Vinci: Distracted Genius with Benjamin Billingsley, M.F.A. Thursdays, March 15 – 29 Three sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $45 An exploration of the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci, the definitive Renaissance Man. From his apprenticeship to Verrocchio, his work for the powerful Ludovico Sforza (Duke of MiIan) and Cesare Borgia, to his work for his final patron, King Francis I of Spain, we’ll track the journey of one of the most remarkable artists and innovative minds of the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo’s relationships, notebooks, legal troubles, and unfinished masterpieces will also be explored.

Benjamin Billingsley is a painter and printmaker living in Wilmington. He holds an M.F.A. from UNC Greensboro and has exhibited work in the Southeastern United States as well as in Estonia, Russia, Japan and Latvia.

Billingsley is a regular participant in the large-scale woodblock steamroller printing events hosted by Cape Fear Press and UNCW, and has provided artwork for four books of poetry by authors including Jason Mott and Daniel Nathan Terry. He teaches studio art and art history at Cape Fear Community College.

BIOLOGY Biology of Aging with Tim Ballard, Ph.D. Human Anatomy Wednesdays, Jan. 31 – Feb. 21 Four sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $60 Back by popular demand, Tim Ballard continues his down-to-earth examination of the theories of aging and related changes in basic cell biology. Come enjoy a series of lectures/discussions of normal human anatomy and physiology and the effects of aging on the organ systems. This semester, Ballard discusses the nervous system, the eyes and ears, immune function, and the general adaptation syndrome (stress response).

Note: It is not necessary to have attended previous series.

Ballard holds a doctorate in human anatomy from the Wake Forest School of Medicine. He is a 33-year veteran of the Department of Biology at UNCW, where he teaches courses in human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, embryology, histology and the biology of human aging.

ACADEMIC COURSES BUSINESS Image and Branding Online with Jennifer Chin, M.A. Wednesdays, March 14 – April 4 Four sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $60 Now more than ever, organizations are establishing an online presence, which extends far beyond a website. However, many organizations fail to consider strategy when deciding what channels to use and how to use them effectively.

This course examines the concepts of image and branding (in public relations, advertising and marketing context), and the challenges of creating and maintaining both online.

Chin is a senior lecturer in the UNCW Department of Communication Studies. She earned a B.A. and M.A. in communication from Virginia Tech and has taught courses in public speaking, public relations, advertising, UNCW’s first-year seminar and discipline capstone for more than 15 years. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she has served as an academic advisor, a University College faculty advisor, and Communication Studies Society advisor.

CREATIVE WRITING The Story of Your Life with Sherry Rotz, M.S.W., M.Ed.,Certified Instructor in Guided Autobiography Wednesdays, Feb. 21 – March 28 Six sessions • 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. $80 Using Guided Autobiography, a semistructured process for life review, this program helps unearth the roots of memory and write the story of your life, two pages at a time. The course utilizes a series of life themes to help you gain access to memories and organize them in a way that honors the complex threads that shape our lives. By writing two pages each week 6

and sharing in small groups, participants gain an appreciation for the direction their lives have taken and an understanding of how their personal identity has been shaped by the crosscurrents in their lives.

Sherry Rotz practiced as a clinical social worker specializing in individual and group therapy with children, adolescents and adults for 18 years. Prior to that she taught fourth grade for 20 years.

The highlight of her teaching career was teaching others to write their stories.

Rotz is a certified instructor for Guided Autobiography and believes that everyone should have the opportunity to tell their unique story.

with Jane Brody, Ph.D., R.N. and Samuel Brody, M.D. Wednesdays, Jan. 17 - Feb. 7 Four sessions • 1 – 2:30 p.m. $60 Advances in medical technology and the increasing complexity of the health care system can lead to difficulties in making health care decisions. The best care for an individual may look different as the person ages and as a person nears the end of life. What does “quality of life” mean and how do we honor competing ethical principles? What are realistic goals? How will they need modification over time and with changes in health status? What is the difference between curative, palliative and hospice care?

Jane Brody is a psychiatric nurse with more than 40 years of experience clinically and as a nurse educator. She was a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Samuel Brody is a geriatrician who has been a physician for over 40 years. He has been named a “Top Doctor” in New York City while serving as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical School.

Mark K. Spano is an author and filmmaker. His work includes The Quality of Light: A Biography of Claude Howell and the documentary on Sicily, Sicily: Land of Love & Strife. Spano recently published an award-winning and critically acclaimed novel titled

Evolution of Chronic Diseases with William Stewart, Ph.D. Wednesdays, April 18 - May 9 Four sessions • 1 – 2:30 p.m. $60 Chronic diseases will be explained as being due to recently acquired habits – habits that are contrary to our long genetic evolution. Focus will be on evolution as it relates to chronic disease, the current state of chronic disease in the U.S., and the four main tools to bridge the disconnect between human body design and use: drugs, surgery, diet and exercise. Four chronic diseases will be discussed in some depth: vascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis and dementia (Alzheimer’s). Findings from current published research will be presented.

OLLI member William Stewart was a clinical researcher for 35 years, developing drugs for many chronic diseases. He holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology, M.S. in statistics and M.S. in genetics. He subsequently studied exercise science and nutrition, and their potential to either prevent or treat chronic disease.

HISTORY The Vikings: Murderous Marauders or Misunderstood Miscreants? with Larry Usilton, Ph.D. Tuesdays, Jan. 23 – Feb. 6 Three sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $45 In the eighth century, thousands of Scandinavians embarked in long ships to attack Christian settlements in the British Isles, Europe and beyond. At first, these attacks were the work of marauders who pillaged and plundered until they were bought off with tribute money. Later, though, the Vikings turned away from piratical activities to become colonizers, farmers and law-abiding citizens. In this course, an effort will be made to explain the transformation and also the impact of Viking culture on Christian Europe.

Larry Usilton holds a Ph.D. from Mississippi State University. He joined UNCW’s faculty in 1971. His specialty is the Middle Ages, more specifically medieval England where he has spent many years studying the relationship between the Crown and the monasteries of the land. He teaches Western civilization, a variety of courses on the Crusades, the Black Death and the kings of medieval England. His publications include two books, The Kings of Medieval England and Conduits of History: A Sourcebook for the Study of Western Civilization.

The Vietnam War with Stephen McFarland, Ph.D. Tuesdays, March 13 – April 3 Four sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $60 This is a continuation of the Vietnam War course offered in fall 2017. This period covers the final six years of the war, as well as events related to Vietnam through 2017. Topics include “just war theory,” the Vietnamization of the war, Nixon’s “Mad Man” strategy for ending the war, the anti-war movement, the Paris Peace Accords, the end of the war, post-war Vietnam, and the debate over who won the war, who lost the war and why was the war lost.

Note: It is not necessary to have attended part one of this course.

Stephen McFarland is a professor of history at UNCW, specializing in the history of technology and the impact of war on societies and societies on war.

His publications include To Command the Sky about the winning of air superiority in World War II, America’s Pursuit of Precision Bombing, and A Concise History of the United States Air Force. His current research project is a history of America’s development of high-octane gasoline.

ACADEMIC COURSES Becoming a Citizen Archivist with the National Archives with Patricia Lawler, M.A. Mondays, March 19 – April 2 Three sessions • 10 – 11:30 a.m. $45 U.S. National Archives and Records Administration is a treasure trove of historical records that anyone can use to research and discover. But finding something in the National Archives can be challenging. With more than 12 billion pages of paper records alone, the National Archives and Records Administration has a massive number of records to digitize or transcribe. Now the National Archives has a project to engage “citizen archivists,” volunteers who contribute to the National Archives by making records more accessible online.

This “how-to” course introduces participants to the National Archives internet site and the opportunity to transcribe history as a citizen archivist.

In addition to a general overview of the website and a description of the registration process, explore a variety of “transcription missions,” including text, photographs and video. You are guaranteed to learn something new every time you start a transcription mission!

Patricia Lawler is a freelance editor who graduated from NC State with a B.A. and M.A. in English. She has held a variety of positions in state and federal government, as well as nonprofit organizations, most recently as the southeastern regional associate for the North Carolina Community Foundation.

Her mother was a German war bride, and Patricia discovered a passion for historical research while editing her mother’s memoirs.

Religious Freedom in the U. S.: 20th-Century Federal Court Interpretations with Candice Bredbenner, Ph.D. Wednesdays, March 28 – April 11 Three sessions • 3 – 4:30 p.m. $45 The U. S. Constitution provides two complementary guarantees regarding religion: the “establishment” clause, which prohibits the government from prescribing religious practices; and the “free exercise” of religion clause. Since the 1930s, federal courts have been asked to rule on a broadening range of controversial issues related to these First Amendment provisions. This class focuses on a representative group of cases, ranging in time from the early 20th century to the present.

Candice Bredbenner is an associate professor of U.S. history at UNCW. Her interests include the history of citizenship in the United States with emphasis on developments in the 20th century, prior to World War II. Current research focuses on how World War I shaped Americans’ public discourse on the obligations of citizenship.

The United States and the Middle East, 1776-2006

19th-Century France

with W. Taylor Fain, Ph.D.

Tuesdays, April 10 – May 1 Four sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $60

Mondays, April 2 – 23 Four sessions • 7 – 8:30 p.m. $60 Come learn about U.S. diplomacy and strategy in the greater Middle East.

Begin with American commercial and missionary activities in the region in the late 18th and early 19th century and campaigns against the Barbary corsairs.

Then probe the impact of World War I and “Wilsonian” visions for the area, the discovery of oil in the region and the Middle East’s growing strategic value.

Examine U.S. interest and involvement in the emerging Arab-Israeli conflict and the ways U.S. policy makers grappled with the decline of European imperial influence in the area – and the related rise of revolutionary Middle Eastern nationalism.

W. Taylor Fain is a professor of history at UNCW; he received his Ph.D. in the history of American foreign relations from the University of Virginia. A former U.S. Department of State historian, he is the author of American Ascendance and British Retreat in the Persian Gulf Region. Currently, he is at work on an international history of the United States and the Indian Ocean during the era of decolonization and Cold War.

This course focuses on major issues and events in France during the 19th century, beginning with the end of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era (1789-1815). In 1848, Paris was again the center of another wave of European revolutions. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 culminated in the Paris Commune, often considered the greatest workers’ revolt of the 19th century. At the end of the century, the Dreyfus Affair introduced modern European antiSemitism. Nevertheless, the democratic French Republic survived.

Michael Seidman is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. His first books — Workers against Work: Labor in Barcelona and Paris during the Popular Fronts, 1936-38 (1991) — have been translated into six languages. He has also written The Imaginary Revolution: Parisian Students and Workers in 1968 (2004). His latest book is Transatlantic Antifascisms from the Spanish Civil War to the end of World War II, (2017).

LITERATURE Ezra Pound with Alessandro Porco, Ph.D. Mondays, Jan. 29 – Feb. 19 Four sessions • 3 – 4:30 p.m. $60 This four-week course is devoted to the study of Ezra Pound (1885-1972) — poet, essayist and editor. The class takes a historical approach to Pound’s poetry, starting with Imagism and ending with The Cantos. Along the way, consider his innovative translations of Chinese poetry and, later, the lyrics of Sextus Propertius.

Learn about Pound’s significant literary friendships with poets such as T.S. Eliot,

W.C. Williams and Hilda Doolittle.

Finally, learn about Pound’s experience after WWII in the American Disciplinary Training Center outside of Pisa, Italy, and the Bollingen Prize Controversy of 1949.

Alex Porco is an assistant professor of English at UNCW. He earned his Ph.D. in poetics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Porco’s research and teaching focus on 20th-century poetry.

He is the editor of the critical edition of Jerrold Levy and Richard Negro’s Poems

by Gerard Legro (2016), a new addition to the canon of Black Mountain College poetry.

T.S. Eliot: A Century Since Prufrock with David Bergdahl, Ph.D. Fridays, Feb. 2 – 9 Two sessions • 10 – 11:30 a.m. $30 Thomas Sterns Eliot was the premier Anglo-American poet and critic of the 20th century and became a playwright with hits on the London and New York stages. A book of humorous poems was the source for the musical Cats. Eliot’s pioneering modernist poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” gained a wide audience in 1917 when the pamphlet Prufrock and Other Observations was published. Seen as a seminal work in the history of modern poetry, it is a jumpingoff site for examining modernism, as its influence extends beyond literary history.

Why has it become an international language? Where did it come from? Examine odd words, unusual names and the role of French, Latin and computer-speak in crafting our language over almost 1,500 years. Review some general principles of language change, with special reference to English; work through numerous examples of English words and expressions that shed light on the history of the language.

OLLI member Cleve Callison, retired station manager of WHQR Public Radio, has a B.A. from Duke University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin, specializing in Anglo-Saxon language and literature.

He has previously taught the history of English for the University of Northern Iowa and Wake Forest University, the Miami University (Ohio) Institute for Learning in Retirement, and with OLLI at UNCW.

With emotional intelligence and wisdom, two prize-winning Canadian fiction writers, Alice Munro and Margaret Atwood, depict themes and characters of all ages who struggle with life’s dark and dystopian circumstances as they face their own human weaknesses. Examine selected short stories from Munro’s Dear Life (2012) and Atwood’s Moral Disorder (2006) and discuss their depictions of characters who seek attachments but who endure relationships that are filled with deceptions and self-deceptions. Explore the blend of autobiographical and fictional elements in several of the stories and of ideas about Canadian identity presented in the stories.

OLLI member Barbara F. Waxman was a professor of English at UNCW for 32 years until her retirement three years ago. She taught courses in multicultural American literature (fiction and memoir), women’s literature and Victorian literature. She authored two books on literature of aging, edited a collection of essays that examine literature through feminist/poststructuralist lenses, and also published essays in literary journals on works by diverse American and British authors.

Mondays, March 5 – 26 Four sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $60 Dubbed the “Dean of American Composers,” Aaron Copland (1900–90) is best known for his musical works celebrating America’s history, folk life and frontier landscapes, most notably “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “Lincoln Portrait,” and the ballets “Billy the Kid,” “Rodeo,” and “Appalachian Spring.”

Despite writing these quintessentially Americanist works, Copland was blacklisted during the Red Scare of the 1950s, suspected of “un-American” activities for his leftist politics and Russian-Jewish ancestry. This course surveys Copland’s remarkable life and career, with opportunities to listen to examples of Copland’s music, watch film excerpts and read some of his own writings. No prior musical training or knowledge is required.

Helena Kopchick Spencer is an assistant professor of music history and affiliated faculty in women’s and gender studies at UNCW. She is a guest lecturer for OLLI’s Met Live in HD broadcasts and, with colleague Nancy King, organizes Opera Wilmington’s annual “Exploring Opera” symposium. Also active as a bassoonist, she is a member of the Opera Wilmington Orchestra, Long Bay Symphony, Oregon Mozart Players and Eugene Opera Orchestra; she also performs with the newly formed Brierwood Ensemble, the UNCW Early Music Consort and the UNCW Faculty Wind Quintet.

OLLI member John LaSala earned his doctorate in applied physics at Stanford University in 1987 and, as an active-duty U.S. Army officer, he served a total of 12 years as a physics professor and lab director at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. Upon retirement from the Army, he spent 15 years in private industry, where he applied his expertise in lasers and optics to develop new products and businesses. Before moving to Wilmington, he served as the Class of ’67 Endowed Professor of Physics Chair at West Point, where he developed a new course on renewable energy. He volunteers as a business student mentor in the UNCW Cameron Executive Network.

POLITICAL SCIENCE Immigration Law and Policy Vanessa Gonzalez, Esq. Thursdays, Feb. 1 – March 1 Five sessions • 1 – 2:30 p.m. $65 Learn about the ever-changing world of U.S. immigration law and policy.

The course begins with a brief history of changes and developments in immigration law over the last few decades. Explore an overview of existing avenues to lawful status within the U.S. (including family-based, employmentbased, humanitarian-based, etc.) using a mixture of lecture/presentation, anecdotes and interactive discussion.

Seek to clarify commonly misunderstood concepts (e.g., “anchor babies,” green card marriages) and hear a perspective of what removal proceedings look like.

Bald Head Island’s natural beauty includes the expansive salt marsh tidal creek ecosystem, which is home to abundant species of birds, invertebrates and fish.

Framing the salt marsh tidal creeks and serving as the anchor for much of Bald Head Island’s interior, the dense maritime forest is truly a coastal treasure.

Centuries-old live oaks, pines, red bays, holly trees and sabal palms are just a few of the species that comprise the Bald Head Woods forest ecosystem, part of the NC Coastal Reserve System.

Finally, the towering vegetated dune ridges that can reach more than 50 feet in elevation provide Bald Head Island with a topography that is unique to the coastlines of southeastern North Carolina.

This is a leisurely three- to four-mile paddle on a slow-moving black water creek, surrounded by swamp trees, spring colors and the birds that call this creek home. Introduction to Mah Jongg with Dennis Conlon Thursdays, Jan. 11 – Feb. 15 Six sessions • 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. $69 The history of mah jongg is shrouded in myth. Is it truly thousands of years old or does it only date back to the mid1800s? Was it created by Confucius, as is fabled, or as a game for the royal court, which was forbidden to commoners?

What is not a mystery is the popularity of this game of strategy and chance all over the world.

Students will learn about the composition of the mah jongg set, the mechanics of playing the game, how to formulate a strategy to win and tactics to prevent others from winning. Several sessions of supervised play will illustrate the lessons and confirm the students’ ability to play the game, either socially or in a competitive atmosphere. Each student must acquire a copy of the Official Standard Hands and Rules of the National Mah Jongg League ($7 at www.nationalmahjonggleague.com) in order to participate in this course.

Delthea Simmons, Poetry and Prose Writer

Jeff Meuwissen, a retired forester, developed a combination of intarsia (wood mosaics) and stained glass while experimenting in the summer of 1999. Many of his pieces are custom designed for his customers.

While growing up in Washington, DC and North Carolina, Delthea Simmons heard stories from her family, friends and strangers. These stories and others have become the basis for her acclaimed works of prose and poetry.

Feb. 12 Candace Whitlock, Acrylics, Sketches and Glass Work, and Chuck Whitlock, Photographic Deep Fused Glass Separately and as a team, Candace and Chuck Whitlock have worked with stained and fused glass for a number of years. Candace is influenced by the beauty of the ocean and her love for her pets. Chuck, formerly an investigative journalist, is currently combining photographs with layers of fused glass.

Feb. 19 Barbara Hubbard, Watercolor Artist In 2001, Barbara Hubbard, a former special educator/literacy coach, began taking local watercolor workshops and classes. Landscapes and florals are featured in her work. Recently she has expanded her work to charcoal drawing and experimented with acrylics, pastels and alcohol inks.

Teaching Through Museums: The Bellamy’s Role in Wilmington History

Built from 1859 to 1861, the Bellamy Mansion is one of North Carolina’s finest examples of antebellum architecture. The Bellamy Mansion Museum, with its rare urban slave quarters, officially opened in 1994.

Executive Director Gareth Evans will explain the Bellamy’s role in the Civil War, Reconstruction, the 1898 insurrection and present day.

Southeast North Carolina, located within the Atlantic Coastal Plain ecoregion, is home to more species of plants and wildlife than anywhere on the Atlantic seaboard, north of Florida. In this program, Andy Wood will introduce an array of topics and share images and living examples from his explorations of habitats that distinguish this part of the world.

Along the way, he will share insights garnered from more than four decades of involvement in the modern environmental movement.

General Processes, Strategies and Techniques How is a contaminated industrial site transformed from a danger to human health and the environment into a site that can be safely used for productive purposes? Approximately 20 percent of all mammal species are bats; 70 percent of these bats eat insects, consuming approximately 4 tons of flying insects (mosquitos and midges) each year. The other 30 percent eat nectar or fruit, thereby pollinating plants such as agave and mangoes and spreading the seeds of plants such as figs and bananas. Our coastal beaches are some of the best in the world and a main driver of our coastal economy. Poor development, storms, constant erosion and the threats of climate change and sea level rise are forcing communities to address those effects with less federal and state funding, and using controversial strategies. Recent reports of GenX and other chemical contaminants in the Cape Fear River raise questions about how chemical toxicity is determined and what exposure to such chemicals means for human health. Shellfish Aquaculture with Troy Alphin, Ph.D. Fermat’s Conjecture with Ed Hoefer, Ph.D.

In number theory, Diophantine equations, which only have integer solutions, are studied. An example is the Pythagorean equation such as a2 + b2 = c2. In 1637, Pierre de Fermat, a famous French mathematician, wrote a note in the margin of a book that the equation an + bn = cn has no solutions for n>2. No proof was supplied and for 356 years proof was searched for. After seven years working alone, Andrew Wiles of Princeton finally produced a proof. This presentation is based on Simon Singh’s book Fermat’s Enigma.

March 2 Medical Research: An Application of Statistical

Science with Hanns Ewald and Bill Stewart, Ph.D. Our world is becoming more and more data-driven. Statistical science has evolved as a branch of mathematics to put structure on the design, collection, analysis and inference of data. One of the current major applications is in medical research. Statistical concepts relating the design, analysis and inference of clinical trials will be explained. These concepts will then be applied in the context of clinical trials of drugs.

Challenges and limitations of the application will also be explored.

The forum seeks to analyze each of the four Canonical Gospels — Mark, Matthew, Luke/Acts and John. What was the major theme of each Gospel? Who was the target audience? Who wrote these Gospels and what were their sources? How did they become part of the New Testament Canon? A fifth session examines similarities and differences between the four Gospels.

The American History Forum is designed to survey American history chronologically over several semesters, for those who want to enlarge their understanding of our nation’s history. In the spring of 2018 we begin in 1607 and advance to 1803 — from the colonies to the republic. We will use Gordon S. Wood’s book, The American Revolution: A History, as the basic text.

This forum is a discussion group where a different class member, who is not an expert in the field of study, leads each session. Class preparation and participation is expected of all members. Presentations and discussions will be on a historical basis, not faith-based. Our textbook is The New Testament

Donizetti’s comic gem L’Elisir d’Amore, staged by Bartlett Sher and conducted by Domingo Hindoyan, stars Pretty Yende as the spirited Adina, with Matthew Polenzani as Nemorino, the simple peasant who falls in love with her. Davide Luciano makes his Met debut in the role of Adina’s arrogant fiancé, Belcore, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo sings the role of the magic potion-peddling Doctor Dulcamara.

LA BOHÈME Saturday, Feb. 24 • 12:30 – 3:45 p.m.

An exciting young cast stars in Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production of La Bohème, the most-performed opera in Met history. Sonya Yoncheva stars as Mimì opposite Michael Fabiano as the passionate writer Rodolfo. Susanna Phillips reprises the role of the flirtatious Musetta and Lucas Meachem sings the role of her lover, the painter Marcello. The cast also features Alexey Lavrov, Matthew Rose and Paul Plishka in this performance led by Marco Armiliato.

Phelim McDermott returns to the Met staging Mozart’s comedy Così fan tutte, led by David Robertson. Set in the 1950s on Coney Island, the cast features Amanda Majeski as the conflicted Fiordiligi; Serena Malfi as her sister, Dorabella; Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara as their feisty maid, Despina; Ben Bliss and Adam Plachetka as the sisters’ fiancés, Ferrando and Guglielmo; and Christopher Maltman as the cynical Don Alfonso.

Starring Sonya Yoncheva as the peasant girl Luisa opposite Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo in Verdi’s tragedy about a young woman who sacrifices her own happiness, attempting to save her father’s life. The cast also stars Plácido Domingo as Luisa’s father Miller, with Olesya Petrova as Federica, and Alexander Vinogradov in his Met debut and Dmitry Belosselskiy as the ruthless men determined to tear Luisa and Rodolfo apart.

Massenet’s enchanting opera Cendrillon, based on Cinderella, premieres at the Met conducted by Bertrand de Billy and directed by Laurent Pelly, whose Met credits include staging Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment and Massenet’s Manon.

Joyce DiDonato adds another role to her Met repertory as the title character, a role she has sung to acclaim. The cast also stars Alice Coote as Prince Charmant, Stephanie Blythe as the evil stepmother Madame de la Haltière, Kathleen Kim as the Fée, and Laurent Naouri as Pandolfe.

This production was first performed at the Santa Fe Opera.

Angela Meade makes her Met role debut as the title character in Semiramide.

Rossini’s opera, which has not been seen at the Met in 25 years, will be conducted

by Maurizio Benini and feature Elizabeth DeShong as the commander of the Assyrian army Arsace, Javier Camarena as an Indian king Idreno, Ildar Abdrazakov as the prince Assur, and Ryan Speedo Green as the high priest Oroe.

America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell.

Andrew Garfield (Silence, Hacksaw Ridge) plays Prior Walter along with a cast including Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass).

This new staging of Tony Kushner’s multi-award-winning two-part play is directed by Olivier and Tony award-winning director Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse). Part One: Millennium Approaches was first performed at the National Theatre in 1992 and was followed by Part Two: Perestroika the next year.

Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies in this dazzling new production.

Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, it’s directed by Dominic Cooke (The Comedy of Errors).

Caesar returns in triumph to Rome and the people pour out of their homes to celebrate. Alarmed by the autocrat’s popularity, the educated élite conspire to bring him down. After his assassination, civil war erupts on the streets of the capital.

1850, and Europe’s most feared terrorist is hiding in Dean Street, Soho. Broke, restless and horny, the 32-year-old revolutionary is a frothing combination of intellectual brilliance, invective, satiric wit, and childlike emotional illiteracy.

Nicholas Hytner’s production will thrust the audience into the street party that greets Caesar’s return, the congress that witnesses his murder, the rally that assembles for his funeral and the chaos that explodes in its wake.

Creditors, spies, rival revolutionary factions and prospective seducers of his beautiful wife all circle like vultures. His writing blocked, his marriage dying, his friend Engels in despair at his wasted genius, his only hope is a job on the railway. But there’s still no one in the capital who can show you a better night on the piss than Karl Heinrich Marx.
