Note from the Director

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNCW is a university-led and member-supported organization that provides educational and experiential programming for adults age 50 and over in Southeastern North Carolina.

This spring semester, OLLI again offers a wide array of offerings spanning many disciplines! The OLLI member volunteer committees, working with staff, have outdone themselves through their collective dedication and hard work to produce this catalog of high quality courses and program activities.

Who we are OLLI at UNCW is a partially self-funded membership organization, endowed by the Bernard Osher Foundation since 2007. As an OLLI, we are part of a national network of 116 lifelong learning institutes on university campuses with over 112,000 lifelong learners continuing to live fulfilling, active, engaging lives.

Our programs and activities are planned and implemented by dedicated member volunteers and staff through various committees.

There are no educational prerequisites for membership except “Learning for the joy of it”.

In addition to the many volunteer opportunities, there are also other ways to give to OLLI at UNCW. Membership fees cover only a portion of the amount we need to provide the diversity of high quality programs to our members. State funding to OLLI at UNCW has been dramatically reduced and it is important, now more than ever, to give through our Annual Giving Campaign. Your gift helps ensure that we have sufficient funds to continue to implement these outstanding courses and programs.

Revisiting songs made famous by artists as diverse as Chuck Berry, James Taylor, Joe Cocker, Tom Petty and more. Their performance emphasizes vocal harmonies and fun interplay between the band members and the audience. The band is composed of five UNCW faculty members: Rick Olsen, Bill Bolduc, James Hunt, Frank Trimble and Bill DiNome.

The Rise and Fall of F. Scott Fitzgerald with Elliott Engel, Ph.D. Tuesday, March 12 6 – 8 p.m. $40 members, $60 nonmembers Register by March 7 Elliot Engel reveals the fascinating life and times of one of America’s most popular novelists. Using anecdotes, biography, analysis and large doses of humor, Engel explains how and why Fitzgerald’s unique personality and creative imagination became the perfect symbol of what is now known as the

Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties. Special attention is paid to his immortal novel, The Great Gatsby.

A Game Apart: Jackie Robinson a performance by Mike Wiley Monday, April 1 6 – 8 p.m. $40 members, $60 nonmembers Register by March 28 A Game Apart provides a glimpse of Jackie Robinson’s life during a bygone era of separate and unequal locker rooms, of whites-only hotels and of restaurants with only a back door for colored athletes to enter.

Mike Wiley’s acclaimed, award-winning works span the stories of fugitive slaves, sports figures and freedom fighters, the struggle of the common man and more. His works are primarily one-man shows, where Wiley sometimes portrays dozens of characters – old and young, men and women, African American and white – over the course of a single play. Audiences leave his performance reflective, enlightened and inspired to apply history’s lessons to events and situations of the present.

Presidents and Their First Ladies: Jerry and Betty Ford with William and Sue Wills Wednesday, May 1 6 – 8 p.m. $40 members, $60 nonmembers Register by April 29 After deciding he would leave politics in 1977, Gerald Ford found himself the first unelected vice president and president. His presidency may be best remembered as a time of national healing after the Watergate political scandal. On a global scale, he signed the Helsinki Accords, making a move towards détente in the Cold War. During his administration, the U.S. involvement with Vietnam came to a close.

First Lady Betty Ford was active in political and social policy and was a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment and the women’s movement. She publicly discussed her breast cancer and addiction to alcohol, eventually creating a place of healing – The Betty Ford Center.

Bringing the Fords to life are William and Sue Wills, who have been working together since they met doing a show in Baltimore, Md., in 1970. For “The Presidents and Their First Ladies, Dramatically Speaking” programs, the Wills create the scripts and costumes that bring their characters to life.

The History and Ecology of the Cape Fear River

Monday, May 20 6 – 8 p.m. $40 members, $60 nonmembers Register by May 16 At a time when most great songwriters – Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart, Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein – were New Yorkers, Jewish immigrants or the children of Jewish immigrants, Johnny Mercer was an anomaly: an Episcopalian choir boy from Savannah whose prominent family could trace its ancestry back to a general who served under George Washington in the Revolutionary War. In this presentation Phil Bruschi and Phil Furia present some of Mercer’s lyrics and what makes them witty and poignant, how they fit the music (like most lyricists of his era, Mercer set lyrics to a completed melody by his composer collaborator), and what, if anything, makes them “southern.”

Philip Bruschi performs Mercer’s songs and talks about them musically. Philip Furia, who wrote the first biography of Johnny Mercer, provides the background material on the songs. Enjoy a presentation of Mercer’s great songs such as “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “Summer Wind.”

Wilmington was established in 1739 on the Cape Fear River and experienced rapid growth through much of the 18th and 19th centuries as the lumber industry and naval stores fueled the economy. The river provided not only a livelihood but also a heritage of great sailing ships, steamboats, civil war blockade runners, battleships, underground tunnels, cotton traders and rice plantations.

Enjoy a virtual tour of the Cape Fear River with Doug Springer as he shares his passion and experience of the river’s unspoiled nature, its ecology, variety of wildlife, and vast history. Springer served as the executive director for Cape Fear River Watch, Inc. from 2007 to 2010 while also doing duty as the Cape Fear RIVERKEEPER®. He is an owner of Wilmington Water Tours.

The Culture and Heritage of the Gullah Geechee in North and South Carolina with John Haley, Ph.D. Thursday, Feb. 21 Noon – 1:30 p.m. $20 members, $30 nonmembers Register by Feb. 18 Forced to leave Africa for the New World to work on coastal plantations in North Carolina and other southern states, the Gullah Geechee people developed a separate Creole language and retained cultural traditions and religious beliefs closer to their African traditions than some of the African American populations

in other parts of the U.S. Explore the impact on the area by the original Gullah Geechee people who worked on the plantations, primarily growing rice. Learn more about Eagle Island, located between the Brunswick and Cape Fear rivers, the only Gullah land site in North Carolina that remains untouched. John Haley will discuss how this culture developed and describe plans for preserving it.

John Haley, UNCW professor emeritus, is a recognized Gullah Geechee scholar.

The Collapse of Minoan Society with Larry Usilton, Ph.D. Thursday, April 18 Noon – 1:30 p.m. $20 members, $30 nonmembers Register by April 15 The island of Crete was home to the Minoan civilization during the Bronze Age. A maritime power for centuries, the Minoan civilization was a dominant force over the islands and shores of the Aegean Sea, creating settlements throughout the area, including the island of Santorini. Learn about the factors at work in the rise and fall of this civilization between 3000 and 1400 B.C.E., from the settlement of Crete by immigrants from the Mediterranean area to the construction of large palaces, such as those at Knossos and Phaestus. Get a glimpse of life on the island as revealed in the frescoes which adorned the palace walls. Learn more about the subsequent demise of the civilization brought about by natural and human forces such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the invasion and conquest of the island by the warlike Mycenaean.

What is a blog? How and why start a blog? Blogs are online “journals” kept by people like you as a way to record thoughts, photographs, travels and more. A blog makes it easy to share stories, memories, adventures, recipes, art and other passions and interests with friends, family and even the world. In this class, walk through the simple steps needed to start and maintain a blog, learn ways to generate content for your blog, and set yourself up as a blogger.

Jeff Ertzberger is a lifelong educator.

He is currently the director of technology for the Watson College of Education at UNCW. During his career he has been a classroom teacher and specialist for the N.C. Department of Instruction. His research interests are games in education, using technology effectively in education, instructional design and web-enhanced instruction.

He is the author of Everybody Wins: A Teachers Guide to Customizing Games for Any Curriculum.

Jason Frye holds an M.F.A. in creative writing, with a concentration in poetry, from UNCW. His work has appeared in many local publications, including the StarNews, North Brunswick Magazine, Our State Magazine, VisitNC.com and the North Carolina Visitors’ Guide. Through his company, Teakettle Junction Productions, he provides copywriting, editing and creative consulting.

Inspiration, Move Me Brightly: Finding and Fostering Inspiration with Jason Frye, M.F.A. What is inspiration? What things inspire you to write or draw, sing or dance? Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and teacher Donald Murray kept “daybooks,” a type of hybrid journal, sketch pad and inspiration catch-all for the length of his career and lived by the motto “never a day without a line.” Daily writing in your own “daybook,” in-class sharing of writings and inspirations and in-class writing exercises will help you discover your voice and teach you to recognize inspiration in surprising places.

In sharing the triumphs and tragedies of others, we will offer a part of ourselves as storytellers. Learn different methods to research and record another person’s life. Discuss how to organize a biography or profile, especially how to choose key details, tailor our writing to a subject’s unique story, and construct a narrative using tools from the writer’s toolbox.

This class includes writing exercises and workshop sessions, as well as some outside readings.

Michelle Bliss is a writer and teacher committed to telling the stories of seemingly ordinary people who have courageously confronted life’s most harrowing trials. Her nonfiction has been published in Ninth Letter, River Teeth and the sixth edition of The Fourth Genre: Contemporary Writers of/on Creative Nonfiction. Her radio reporting has won two regional Edward R. Murrow awards and has aired on NPR’s All Things Considered.

Michelle holds an M.F.A. degree in nonfiction from UNCW. She teaches for the English and graduate liberal studies departments at UNCW.

Session 1: Forbidden Love in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things with Hannah Dela Cruz Abrams Monday, Jan. 28 • 3 – 5 p.m.

And how much...”

How and why are we so moved— whether to laughter, tears, or anger— by the rhythms, images, and voices of poetry? This course explores classics of 20th-century American poetry by Ezra Pound, Gwendolyn Brooks, Robert Hayden, Elizabeth Bishop and others.

This class considers the unique and rich ways in which poems use language to express feelings of love and loss, and the audible pleasures provided by the recitation of poetry.

Described by critics as “extraordinary,” “imaginatively supple,” “exuberant” and “acrobatic” Arundhati Roy’s gorgeous, wrenching prose brings to life an incomparable story about love and caste.

Roy’s Booker Prize-winning novel is a beloved modern masterpiece with a particular focus on the theme of forbidden love. Be prepared for a devastating look into India’s hot and conflicted heart.

Alex Porco is an assistant professor of English at UNCW. He received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His teaching and research focus on 20th-century poetry and hip-hop music and culture.

Hannah Dela Cruz Abrams has an M.F.A. in creative writing and teaches English at UNCW. She is the winner of the prestigious Rona Jaffe Writers Award and was a 2011–12 North Carolina Arts Council Fellow. Her most recent publication is the novella, The Man Who Danced with Dolls, from Madras Press.

Session 2: William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury with Mark Boren, Ph.D. Thursday, Feb. 21 • 3 – 5 p.m.

This is a discussion of William Faulkner’s signature text, exploring both its unusual form and its controversial content. We will talk about what is going on within the text and why it became such an internationally influential work of literature.

Mark Boren has a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and teaches in the department of English at UNCW, primarily American literature, from the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

His courses tend to be thematically developed, and the areas are, most often, gothic literature, madness, Romanticism and slavery. Boren’s teaching is also closely tied to his active research in those areas.

Session 3: Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan by Jamie Zeppa with Rebecca Warfield, M.A. Tuesday, March 26 • 1 – 3 p.m.

Jamie Zeppa traveled to Bhutan as an English teacher, leaving behind her family, fiancé, Ph.D. program and Western norms. Entering into a culture both rapidly shifting toward Western standards and fighting to maintain a sense of national identity, Zeppa was appalled by the “primitive” and conflicted culture. But as she foraged deeper into the mountains of Bhutan, Zeppa began to question who was changing more – Bhutan or herself?

Explore Zeppa’s memoirs of teaching in Bhutan, while also using her experiences to understand how the fabric of Bhutanese culture continues to fray from the outer world’s influences.

olli courses FILM STUDIES What’s So Great About Citizen Kane? with David Monahan, Ph.D. Tuesday, April 23 & Wednesday, April 24 Two sessions • 6 – 8:30 p.m. $29 members, $39 nonmembers Register by April 22

Rebecca Warfield received her B.A. and M.A. from UNCW and is a lecturer in the English department.

Her interests reside in narratives that explore silenced, oppressed and isolated groups. Specifically, Warfield is interested in exploring non-fiction voices and stories of women, farmers and eastern cultures.

Session 4: Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Scarlet Letter with Bob Baginski, Ph.D. Monday, April 29 • 3 – 5 p.m.

Nathaniel Hawthorne remains one of America’s finest novelists and short story writers. He wrote four novels from 1850 to 1860, with The Scarlet Letter serving as his masterpiece.

Hawthorne explores psychological and moral issues, illusion vs. reality, the influence of the past on the present, guilt, and the relationship of the artist to the world. He gives us one of the most memorable protagonists in American fiction, Hester Prynne, who is isolated from the community and must endure the guilt and repercussions of her sin.

Bob Baginski earned his doctorate in English from Ohio University, specializing in American literature and linguistics. He taught English, literature and writing at three universities and has written and edited for numerous academic and business journals.

Sherman Alexie and Smoke Signals with Lee Schweninger, Ph.D. Wednesdays, April 10 – 17 Two sessions • 6 – 8 p.m. $29 members, $39 nonmembers Register by April 8 Lee Schweninger discusses two or three short stories from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1994) by acclaimed author Sherman Alexie, a Couer d’Alene Native American from Spokane, Wash. The course includes a screening of the film Smoke Signals (1998), directed

by Chris Eyre (Cheyenne/Arapahoe) and based on those Alexie stories.

Smoke Signals is arguably the first feature length fiction film written and directed

by American Indians.

Lee Schweninger is a professor in the English department at UNCW where he teaches American literature with a speciality in American Indian literatures.

He has published a study of American Indian literary responses to the landscape (2008), and his book Imagic Moments: Indigenous North American Film is due out from the University of Georgia Press in spring 2013.

by Orson Welles was nominated for nine Academy Awards and has been frequently voted as the “best film ever.”

But what is so great about this movie?

Join us for a screening and discussion led by UNCW film studies department chair David Monahan. He introduces the famous film and provides some details about its prodigious and provocative 24-year-old director Orson Welles. After the screening, Monahan will illustrate and discuss the movie’s influential and innovative use of narrative, sound, editing, lighting, camera movement and more. What’s so great about Citizen Kane? Join OLLI and find out!

Dave Monahan teaches screenwriting, editing and film production. He also has taught filmmaking and film studies at Hunter College, Parsons School of Design and New York University’s graduate film program. He has written, directed and/or edited a number of short films. Monahan’s experimental musical Western Ringo screened in 22 international film festivals and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for animated short at the 2006 Seattle International Film Festival. His movie Things Grow received a documentary prize at the 2011 Athens International Film and Video festival. Monahan is the co-author of Looking At Movies, an introductory textbook currently taught at over 300 colleges and universities in North America and the United Kingdom.

For the serious student of Italian, continue your studies with a challenging and fun group. Delve into verb tenses, expand your everyday vocabulary and translate literature. Above all, practice, practice, practice...and you will be “bravo!”

A native French speaker, Philipe Vandatte grew up in Belgium and Colorado. He retired from a career in sailboat sales and car exports. He is a self-proclaimed Francophile and enjoys interacting with others who share his love of French language, food and culture. Professoressa Judi Paparozzi is a gifted language teacher with a passion for all things Italia! She supplements her lessons with Italian humor, music, food and culture.

Carole Fink, Humanities Distinguished Professor of History Emerita at The Ohio State University and a former faculty member at UNCW, is a specialist in European International History.

She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University. She is the author of Defending the Rights of Others: The Great Powers, the Jews and International Minority Protection, 1878–1938 (2004) and The Genoa Conference: European Diplomacy, 1921–1922 (1984, new ed.

1993), both of which were awarded the George Louis Beer Prize of the American Historical Association, and Marc Bloch: A Life in History (1989), which has been translated into six languages. She has written some 50 articles and chapters on contemporary European history.

1789: A Turning Point in World History with Michael Seidman, Ph.D. Tuesdays, April 16 – April 30 Three sessions • 3:30 – 5 p.m. $39 members, $69 nonmembers Register by April 15 In 1789, the French adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, a model of Enlightenment beliefs that human rights are equal and universal. That same year the United States held its first presidential election. Seidman looks at the year 1789 as a snapshot into the momentous changes sweeping across Europe and the globe, focusing on the radical social and political upheavals of the French Revolution.

The Reformation with William McCarthy, Ph.D. Tuesdays, April 2 – 16 Three sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $39 members, $69 nonmembers Register by April 16 Protestant reformation – or revolt – was caused by political and financial concerns as well as a quest for theological purity. Corruption permeated Church administration. Nation-states were bursting on the scene. From peasant to potentate, many resented donating large sums of money to Rome. The Reformation formed part of a striking series of changes in European politics and society at the time. Examine the context for reform, its components and the important consequences for European society and the modern world.

William McCarthy received his Ph.D. in European history from Boston University. He teaches courses on early modern Europe, Spain, colonialism and maritime history in the UNCW history department. He has conducted archival research at numerous locations in Europe, Mexico, India, the Philippines and Hawaii. His publications have appeared in The Colonial Latin American Historical Review and the International Journal of Maritime History.

Topics include emerging women’s rights movements in traditional societies, the rise of the female political executive and the status of female political representation in national legislatures. The course considers female leadership at the grassroots level including important student movements in countries such as Chile, as well as anti-authoritarian movements in countries such as Liberia.

Jennifer Horan is an associate professor of political science in UNCW’s Department of Public and International Affairs. She earned a Ph.D. in political science from Tulane University. Her research and teaching include women in politics, environmental policy, natural hazard management and political institutions in Latin America.

She has written for the International Journal of Organization Theory and Behavior, the Social Science Journal and the Handbook of Globalization and the Environment.

This global studies series continues our OLLI tradition of delving deeply into the intensive study of a country. This spring, we focus on India.

Session 1: India: Beginnings and Transformations with Hannah Dela Cruz Abrams, M.F.A. Monday, March 11 Explore the lush and evocative tapestry of Indian literature, from ancient epics like the Bhagavad-Gita to modern masterpieces like Midnight’s Children.

Consider this a journey through Indian literary history, whereupon we will discover how this incredibly diverse and ritualistic civilization has been set forth on the page. Participants will also read and discuss brief and beautiful excerpts by a number of representative (and revered) Indian writers.

Hannah Dela Cruz Abrams has an M.F.A. in creative writing and teaches English at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She is the winner of the prestigious Rona Jaffe Writers Award and was a 2011–12 North Carolina Arts Council Fellow. Her most recent publication is the novella, The Man Who Danced with Dolls, from Madras Press.

Hines has taught geography at UNCW for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in geography from Louisiana State University. She teaches cartography, planning, world geography, the geography of food and the geography of race. She is the director of the Geography Internship Program. Her research interests include American racial history, the American South and foodways. She is a board member of the African American Heritage Foundation of Wilmington and the Ten-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness in the Lower Cape Fear Region.

Session 3: The Hindustani Music of North India with John Rack, Ph.D. Tuesday, March 19 Indian classical music is a tradition that originated in the Vedic rituals of the 12th century. Explore concepts such as “Nada Brahma,” the creator manifested in musical sound; “raga,” the vocabulary of pitches; “tala,” rhythmic cycles; and “rasa,” extra-musical associations with music and improvisation Indian-style.

John Rack is an associate professor of music in his 22nd year with UNCW. He holds a Ph.D. in music education from Pennsylvania State University, including a minor in psychology and a dissertation on performance anxiety. He teaches the course “Cultures of the World through Music and Dance” and introduces students to concepts learned through personal experiences and study with musicologists and natives of places such as Ghana and Bali.

Examine the popular culture of globalized India, including the mass media, sports and rapidly changing lifestyle practices.

Nandana Bose is an assistant professor in the film studies department of UNCW. She is originally from India and received her Ph.D. in film studies from University of Nottingham, England. Bose is a former British Chevening scholar at the University of Leeds. She is the director of MANTRA: the Bollywood Film Series, which is programmed and hosted by her students in Introduction to Bollywood cinema.

The violent nature of the partition resulted in bloody riots, millions of refugees and political repercussions that last to this day. This course inquires into the causes and consequences of the Indian Partition in August 1947.

Venkat Dhulipala is an assistant professor of history, specializing in the history of modern South Asia. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2008 for his dissertation on the movement for the formation of Pakistan in the northern Indian province of Uttar Pradesh. Dhulipala is working on a book based on his dissertation, “Rallying Around the Qaum: The Muslims of the United Provinces and the Movement for Pakistan, 1935–1947.”

Indian art dates from the third millennium B.C. to modern times.

Survey topics include early rock-cut cave temples and lost-wax bronze sculptures, traditional forms of painting, such as the miniature, as well as Paleolithic cave paintings and historical era cave frescoes (such as the Ajanta Caves) that date between the 2nd and 10th centuries C.E. Additionally, the unique impact of the British Raj on Indian art as well as reactions to the Western influence (such as the Bengal School of painting, the Indian avant-garde and contemporary Indian styles) complete our chronological journey through the rich traditions of Indian art.

Strike up the band! In cooperation with the UNCW music department, the OLLI New Horizons Band provides an ensemble experience for adult brass, woodwind and percussion players interested in making music. The band welcomes all adults who are currently playing their instrument as well as those individuals who participated in their school music programs and may not have played for a long time. The band is led by John LaCognata, Ph.D., director of bands, Department of Music, UNCW. Each weekly session includes sectionals and full band recitals.

The band performs one concert at the conclusion of each semester.

John LaCognata received his bachelor of science degree in music education from the University of Illinois, his master of music degree in trumpet performance from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in music education with an emphasis in wind conducting at the University of Florida. He continues to teach and perform as a trumpet player.

Billingsley participated in the Big Print Block Party in Carolina Beach in 2010 and 2012, printing 4-by-8-foot woodblocks with a steamroller. Recently, Billingsley won first place in the “Living Totems” exhibition at 2TENHaustudio in Ivanhoe, N.C. He has provided artwork for the covers of three books of poetry, Hide Behind Me by Jason Mott (Main Street Rag, 2011) and Days of Dark Miracles (Seven Kitchens Press, 2011) and Waxwings (Lethe Press, 2012), both

He is an international concert pianist who has performed and given master classes in the U.S., Europe, Israel and Asia and has recorded nine CDs including the first recording of the complete solo piano music of the American master Roger Sessions.

PHILOSOPHY & RELIGION Great Schisms in Religion: Early Christianity with George Zervos, M.Th., Ph.D. Wednesday, March 13 • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $19 members, $29 nonmembers Register by March 12 George Zervos addresses a series of conflicts in the first 1,000 years of Christianity that played a significant role in the development of the church. The class focuses on disputes among apostles, evangelists, bishops and believers, with a view towards the authorities brought in by the competing parties to resolve their issues. Many of the controversies among today’s Christian factions have their roots in the ancient past. Can their solutions be found there as well?

George Zervos is an associate professor and chairman of the UNCW Department of Philosophy and Religion. His area of expertise is in New Testament, early Christianity and New Testament Greek.

He received his master’s of theology from the University of Athens, Greece in 1977 and his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1986. He is preparing a two-volume book on the important early Christian apocryphal Gospel, the Protevangelium of James, a biography of Jesus’ mother Mary, which is the source of many Marian doctrines that are officially espoused by the catholicizing churches to this day.

Cameron Gordon received his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He is a clinical psychologist in a private practice at Trinity Wellness Center in Wilmington, with particular areas of expertise in positive psychology and intimate relationships. Gordon teaches and directs a research lab at UNCW aimed at discovering ways to help individuals and couples achieve maximum enjoyment and fulfillment from their lives.

Exploring “Generativity” in Adulthood with Joe Kishton, Ph.D. Mondays, April 8 – April 22 Three sessions • 1 – 2:30 p.m. $39 members, $69 nonmembers Register by April 5 According to psychosocial theory, most adults experience the desire to be generative. Generativity is a term coined by psychoanalyst Erik Erikson to explain the need at a certain stage of adulthood to make a difference for future generations. Generativity may be expressed through parenting, invention, teaching, improving the physical or social environment and artistic creation.

This program will explore the concept of generativity and illustrate the use of psychobiography in that exploration.

Joe Kishton is a professor of psychology at UNCW. As a lifespan developmental psychologist, his interests include developmental changes that occur throughout the entire lifespan from infancy through very old age. His research and scholarly interests are centered on a life-story model of adult identity. He has produced several psychobiographical documentary films.

European Union: History and Current Challenges with Daniel Masters, Ph.D. Tuesdays, Feb. 12 – Feb. 26 Three sessions • 6 – 7:30 p.m. $39 members, $69 nonmembers Register by Feb. 11 While some claim this is the end of the European Union (EU), the trend of behavior suggests the EU may actually emerge as a stronger institution with more capabilities than before the crisis.

Review the historical evolution of the European Union (from the Coal and Steel Community through the Lisbon Treaty), analyze the structure of the EU along the three pillars (economic, security and interior functions), and finally evaluate the current dilemmas related to the EU financial crisis and what is means for the future of the EU. Daniel Masters has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, with an emphasis on international relations and comparative politics. Masters has published research in the fields of terrorism, democracy and public opinion. His research interests relate to international security and European and Russian Politics. He is an assistant professor in UNCW’s Department of Public and International Affairs.

Feb. 25 The Ways Music Can Shape a Life

with Steven Errante, musician, composer, conductor

Most Wilmingtonians know Steven Errante as the conductor of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra since 1986. He is also the founding conductor of the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and teaches upper-level music theory courses, film scoring, composition and conducting at UNCW. His compositions have been recorded by the Wilmington and London symphonies. He has written numerous commissioned pieces such as Battleship North Carolina March and Festival Dances. He was the first composer commissioned for the Vanguard Premieres series sponsored by the Vanguard Voices choir.

In this session, Errante explains the ways music and creativity have shaped his life.

Learn to Love and Write Poetry with Jason Frye, poet

As a freelance writer, Jason Frye spends most of his day writing for other people. When he has time to write for himself, he turns to his first love – poetry. In this session, he shares a selection of his poems, discusses where he finds inspiration, and describes how he approaches writing a poem. The class includes writing activities to help participants write their own poem and begin to experience the world as Jason does – through poetry. A Story of How Art Therapy Turned into a Life’s Work

with Harry Davis, painter, artist

Harry Davis turned to oil painting as therapy after he was partially paralyzed in an accident while serving in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.

Although he had no formal art training, Davis found that the use of bold bright colors and attention to detail provided therapy for him as well as a marketable avocation. His work focuses on his African American heritage and has led to many national honors including the key to the City of Savannah, Ga. He shares his gift and talks about his journey from paint-by-numbers to professional artist.

Barry Salwen is an award-winning pianist with bachelor, master and doctor of music degrees from the Juilliard School in New York City and a diploma with highest honors from the Vienna Academy of Music, Austria. He has traveled the world performing and giving master piano classes. As a recipient of a Fulbright Scholars Grant he led a seminar at the music conservatory in Freiburg, Germany. His music is available on CD, and he is the first artist to have completed the solo piano music of the American master Roger Sessions.

As a dancer and performer, Tracey Varga’s creativity has evolved into choreography and the formation of a non-profit dance organization. She has choreographed works for dance companies in Maryland, Washington, Idaho and New York. She teaches modern/jazz and tap dance at the Wilmington School of Ballet and is a licensed physical therapist. In this session, Varga shares how her talent has evolved into a fulfillment of her dreams.

How to Make and Share a Passion for Art with Donna Moore, painter, artist

As a UNCW creative arts major, Donna Moore studied and worked closely with renowned artist Claude Howell. Today, her own art is displayed in public as well as private venues including UNCW’s Randall Library. For many years, she shared her creative talents at Castle Creek Studios with children and adults.

She is co-director and instructor with the Museum School at Cameron Art Museum. She explains how art has shaped her life through examples of her work.

Telling History and Culture through Quilts

with Hattie Schmidt, quilt historian, fiber artist

Hattie Schmidt mastered the art of quiltmaking but instead of copying popular patterns, she developed her own style emphasizing color and history. Her quilts have been on display at museums around the country. She recently participated in the Smithsonian Institution’s Journey Stories and presented her work at the Pender County Library in Burgaw. In this session, Schmidt shows examples of her work and explains how the simple act of sewing and the use of fabric have become a creative process for her.

Special Events 2013 Hall & Megivern Interfaith Conference Thursday – Sunday, April 11 – 14 Free and Open to the Public Conference schedule will be announced in early spring.

The conference is sponsored by the UNCW Department of Philosophy and Religion, OLLI, the UNCW Office of the Provost, the UNCW Office of Campus Diversity and various faith communities in the Wilmington area.

The conference features three internationally acclaimed speakers and panelists for six different programs, including Vincent Wimbush of Claremont Graduate University, Johanna Bos of Louisville Seminary and Mark Siljander, a former Member of Congress and a Christian-Muslem peace activist.

Parsifal Saturday, March 2, 2013 • Noon – 5:40 p.m. $20 members, $30 nonmembers Jonas Kaufmann makes his Met role debut as the title character in Richard Wagner’s Parsifal, conducted by Daniele Gatti and directed by noted film and opera director François Girard in his Met debut. “Parsifal is not just an opera—it’s a mission. At the end of his life, Wagner was trying to reconcile all the aspects of his spirituality. It’s a sacred piece in the history of music,” Girard says. The cast also features Katarina Dalayman as Kundry, the mystical woman who tempts Parsifal; Peter Mattei in his role debut as Amfortas, king of the Knights of the Holy Grail; René Pape in one of his greatest roles, the wise old knight Gurnemanz; and Evgeny Nikitin as the magician Klingsor.

David McVicar’s second new production of the season is this dynamic staging of Handel’s Giulio Cesare, a hit at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2005, which incorporates elements of Baroque theater and 19thcentury British imperialism to illuminate the opera’s themes of love, war, and empire building.

Finding Your Balance in Nature with Donna Gardner, yoga and meditation instructor Wednesdays, Feb. 27 – March 20 Four sessions • 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. $49 members, $69 nonmembers Register by Feb. 25 In this hectic world, it is easy to feel stressed on a daily basis. Tense muscles, racing minds and negative thoughts can cause impatience, frustration and unhappiness. Yoga and meditation can calm and focus the mind, release stress from the body and bring inner peace to help us find more contentment in life. This four-session series provides instruction on the practice of gentle yoga and the benefits of mindfulness and meditation in the serene settings of Wilmington’s beautiful parks and gardens. The first session takes place in the OLLI classroom. The remaining three are held outdoors, weather permitting.

Donna Gardner has been practicing yoga and Insight Meditation for more than 20 years and is an experienced teacher. She holds a master’s degree in dance from New York University and is an American Council on Exercise certified personal trainer. She also attended the graduate school of social work at Boston University.

The Lumber River, designated as a natural and scenic river, was named one of North Carolina’s 10 Natural Wonders in 2010. Wildlife is abundant on the river, and the observant paddler may spot white and blue heron, wood duck, red tail hawk, owl, deer and perhaps the elusive river otter. Travel back in time as you paddle an eight-mile stretch of this magnificent river from Boardman to the Princess Ann landing at Lumber River State Park. At the turn of the 19th century this area was a bustling hub for the naval stores industry. Timber was poled down river by men stationed on a system of bridges. Their remains can still be found in the Lumber and are a reminder of how important the naval store industry was to the economy of Southeastern N.C. While the community of Boardman has long vanished, the remains of this timber company town can be found in the river itself. Kayak novices welcome on this excursion.

Scott Schmolesky has been kayaking for more than 20 years and has been an instructor the last 10. He holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Northern Illinois University with a focus in outdoor teacher education. He has taught environmental and outdoor education at North Carolina School of the Arts, Green Mountain College and Southeastern Community College.

outdoor programs Stealing the Kaiser’s Gardener with Matt Collogan, Airlie Gardens Monday, April 15 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. $19 members, $29 nonmembers Register by April 11 Learn the history of Airlie Gardens and the fascinating story of how Sarah Jones along with Pembroke Jones and Henry Walters were able to lure landscape architect Rudolph Topels away from Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. After reviewing the history the group will walk the gardens for approximately 2 hours to see how the landscape design was implemented at Airlie.

Matt Collogan is a graduate of UNCW’s Environmental Studies Program. He is the Environmental Education Program Manager for Airlie Gardens.

Greenfield Lake Kayak with Cape Fear River Watch Monday, April 22 10 a.m. – Noon $29 members, $39 nonmembers Register by April 18 Tour Greenfield Lake by kayak, canoe or on the motorized “big boat” with Scott Whitham and Kemp Burdette of Cape Fear River Watch. Learn about the history, plants and animals of the lake and its importance as the largest catch basin in New Hanover County. There are four seats on the “big boat” for those unable to paddle. There may be some time toward the end of the class to do a little exploring on your own.

History and Mysteries Beneath the Cape Fear River with Capt. Doug Springer and Richard Lawrence Monday, May 6 (Rain date: Tuesday, May 7) 10 a.m. – Noon $39 members, $49 nonmembers Register by May 2 During the 19th century, the Cape Fear River saw daily industrial activity including traffic to turpentine distilleries, naval stores warehouses and shipyards.

While there may be few obvious remnants of these activities visible to the casual visitor, a closer look reveals abundant physical evidence in the form of old wharves, bulkheads and submerged vessels such as paddle wheel steam boats, tugboats, ferries and barges.

Explore the history and mysteries that lie beneath the dark waters of the Cape Fear River with Capt. Doug Springer and Richard Lawrence.

Doug Springer is the former Riverkeeper for Cape Fear River Watch and one of the owners of Wilmington Water Tours.

Richard Lawrence is President of the Friends of Queen Anne’s Revenge and former head of the state Underwater Archaeology Branch for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.

Don Harty, owner of Mahanaim Adventures, provides guided kayaking and backpacking adventures. He has multiple certifications in first aid, safety and wilderness leadership and considerable experience leading kayaking, hiking, backpacking and backcountry camping trips. He recently completed his first 50-mile and 110-mile backpacking trips on the Appalachian Trail.

When Bernie Madoff’s historic Ponzi scheme collapsed in December 2008, it wiped out almost $65 billion in wealth and plunged victims into a swamp of litigation that still stretches far and wide. In the aftermath, Washington, Wall Street and Main Street all vowed to learn from this scandal. But what are the bedrock lessons we still need to focus on? Prize-winning journalist Diana B. Henriques will discuss her insights into those lessons, as well as the adventures she had while researching her bestselling book, which included two prison interviews with the con artist himself.

Diana B. Henriques, the author of the New York Times bestseller The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust, is a contributing writer for The New York Times, where she has worked since 1989. She was previously a staff writer for Barron’s magazine, a Wall Street correspondent for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and an investigative reporter

for The Trenton (N.J.) Times. In 2005, she was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize and won a George Polk Award, the Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Reporting and Harvard’s Goldsmith Prize for her 2004 series exposing insurance and investment rip-offs of young military consumers. She was also a member of The New York Times team that was a Pulitzer finalist for its coverage of the 2008 financial crisis. Henriques is a member of the board of governors of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) and serves on the board of trustees of her alma mater, the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Besides her book on the Madoff scandal -- which HBO has optioned for possible development into a film starring Robert DeNiro -- Henriques is the author of three previous books: The Machinery of Greed, Fidelity’s World and The White Sharks of Wall Street.
