Fraternity and sorority members participate in hundreds of hours of community service efforts. In addition, members donate thousands of dollars annually to philanthropic causes.
Members come from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Fraternities and sororities represent a rich diversity of the campus community.
Affiliated members are often the most visible campus leaders. Our members are involved in a variety of campus activities and passionate supporters of University traditions such as BraveNation Bash, Homecoming, and Festival at Old Main.
Fraternity and sorority members are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities and organizations. The more involved individuals were in their fraternity or sorority during college, the more they are involved in their community postgraduation.
The fraternity and sorority community has earned GPA consistently higher than the University GPA. Many members even make the Chancellor's List.
Fraternity and sorority organizations offer many opportunities to develop a member’s leadership potential. In addition to teaching basic leadership principles, organizations aspire to create an environment in which a member’s leadership skills can be tested and perfected. The various positions open for affiliated students allow them to develop skills they will one day transfer to other areas of life. Fraternity and sorority members can also be found holding other positions of leadership across campus. Lastly, each fraternity and sorority organization has an opportunity to attend leadership programs and conferences at the local, regional, and national level which also provide an opportunity for members to sharpen their leadership skills.
Organizations promote a positive community by creating and participating in programs that enhances members’ experience Members feel connected, building mutually beneficial relationships that allow them to test ideas, challenge assumptions, and navigate conflicts Fraternities and sororities offer an oasis of friendship and support. Through shared experiences, members enjoy their time with their chapter members and fellow community members. The relationships created are likely to be lifelines through college and throughout life. The connections allow members to support each other through academic, career, and social growth.
Members of each fraternity and sorority at UNCP contribute to the campus, local, and global community by giving their time and talents With an active commitment to advocacy, diversity, and inclusion, members have opportunities to participate in hands-on volunteer work and put together fundraising events for charitable organizations These opportunities ensure that fraternity and sorority members have an impact on their community and develop lifelong habits of giving back

How do you join a fraternity or sorority?
Requirements and procedures are different for each council and individual organization. The Ambassadors serving on the All Greek Council can direct you to the appropriate next step if you let them know you are interested in learning more about the community at UNCP. In addition, interested students are encouraged to attend an organization’s events to learn more about becoming a member You can always contact the staff in Campus Engagement and Leadership to learn more about the opportunities and avenues to be recruited.
What are the requirements to join a fraternity or sorority?
We encourage you to visit national website or speak to a current member to learn more about a specific chapter’s requirements. Most organizations require between a 2.5 and a 3.0 minimum GPA full time enrollment at UNCP and campus or community involvement to join As you get involved with campus activities, you will meet the members of the fraternity and sorority community. UNCP does not prohibit transfers from joining in their first semester, however, there are some organizations that require that a student have earned at least 12 credits at their current institution before they can join.
Is hazing a traditional practice in fraternities and sororities?
UNCP has a clear policy that hazing is prohibited. This is not limited to fraternities and sororities but for any student, faculty, staff or visitor. Chapter members are educated on the dangers of such practices on an ongoing basis by both the University and the national/international organization. Hazing, or any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion or mental distress, is entirely contrary to the purposes of the fraternity and sorority community and UNCP and is not tolerated
Additionally, hazing has been renounced by all inter/national organizations and their governing bodies. If anyone ever thinks that they are being asked to participate in inappropriate activities, whether in a fraternity or sorority or any other student organization, the student should report it to the Office of Student Conduct immediately.
How do I determine if I want to join a fraternity or sorority? If so, which one will be the best fit for me?
If you ' re looking for an organization to enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual interpersonal, and social development then a fraternity or a sorority might be for you. Our advice in determining the right organization for you includes:
Research the UNCP chapter and inter/national organization via their website and social media profiles
Read articles. Talk to current members. Check out their events page on BraveConnect and attend a program/event they are hosting. Get a sense of the organizational values. Do they align with who you are and who you would like to be? Look at the motto, mission statement, founding ideals/principles and the philanthropic involvement of the organization.
This should ease the decision making process
Is there a cost associated with joining a fraternity or sorority?
Like many involvement opportunities in college, there is a financial commitment associated with joining a fraternity or sorority. The costs go toward inter/national fees, chapter operating expenses and social functions. Financial obligations differ for men and women and among individual chapters. Additional costs throughout the semester may be for pictures, gifts, T-shirts, and other organization’s philanthropies etc. There may be payment plans available for students, as well as scholarships within the individual chapters or council.
Can I join a fraternity or sorority as a graduate student or an online student?
Yes and no. Most organizations have an alumni chapter that graduate students can look into. Graduate students cannot join the undergraduate chapters at UNCP at this time We encourage graduate students to visit the national website of the org(s) they are interested in to learn more about alumni membership. Online undergraduate students can usually join but at the discretion of the chapter.
