On behalf of the Panhellenic Executive Council and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, welcome to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill!

We are all so excited for you to embark on this journey.

It feels like just yesterday I was in your shoes as a PNM, excitedly awaiting the beginning of recruitment, wanting to find my permanent home at Carolina. I relished in every moment of the recruitment experience, feeling that I was nearing a great sense of belonging as each round progressed. I thought that when I opened my Bid Card in the Great Hall and ran to my new home, I would feel like a whole new person; that I would immediately have 150 new best friends and instantly become my best self.

In actuality, none of those things would happen all at once. The sorority experience is not a predetermined, prescribed one. You will be granted a million stepping stones in every direction and countless doors will be made available for you to open. Being a Chapter Member will equip you with tools and graciously teach you how to open those doors. Find comfort in knowing Sorority Membership is a lifelong journey, not a destination. Every day, you have the opportunity to learn something new from your Sisters and find new ways to become inspired.

During the Recruitment Process, take the time to reflect on what you hope to gain from Sorority Membership and the role you want it to play in your life, whether big or small. Take necessary moments to tend to your mental health.

My hope is that you go into this experience with an open mind and an open heart.

As you read through this booklet, you will be given lots of information and details about the Recruitment Process, lingo, expectations, and everything in between. Know that the Panhellenic Executive Council, your Gamma Chis, and all of us want to see you fall in love with your collegiate experience as you create the pathway to the rest of your life.

As members of the Panhellenic community, we are implementing programs and policies to reflect our values surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Panhellenic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is just one of the ways that our community has begun to act on these ideals.

Over the past year, we have made strides in making every aspect of the membership experience more inclusive. One of the most significant contributions this committee has made this year was in collaboration with the Vice President of Recruitment to make the formal recruitment process more equitable. By changing the way in which we approach formal recruitment, our goal was to bring focus to who you are, what you love, and who you want to be. In the creation of the Greek Point, the Panhellenic community has become more involved in the philanthropies of the other councils.

Additionally, this committee has developed member programming for both current and new members on how to recognize and celebrate diversity.

It is our wish for you to find your home at Carolina. We hope you find the women who light your ambition, push you to your most authentic self, and recognize the value that you bring to the world. The work that the DE&I committee has done was done for you. While we are not done in our efforts, we hope that you will join us in making Panhellenic a home for everyone.

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) Established in 2000, the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is home to ten cultural and interest-based fraternities and sororities. The mission of MGC is to serve the entire student body through efforts to improve campus life by fostering collaboration among and within all of the member chapters. By building interaction between diverse groups, the Multicultural Greek Council hopes that its members collaborate effectively and learn to appreciate people whose race, sexual identity, gender, gender expression, religion, ethnicity, and interests may be different from their own.

National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) Carolina is home to eight historically African American fraternities and sororities which are governed by the UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. These organizations are service-oriented and conduct philanthropic events and hands-on community projects in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. NPHC organizations host a variety of social, service and cultural programs throughout the year aimed at educating members of the Carolina community and uplifting all people in the community-at-large. NPHC sponsors the annual Homecoming Step Show in November as well as programs such as "Meet the Greeks" to educate new students about the different historically Black Greek letter organizations on campus. NPHC also plans service projects, fundraisers, and social events such as tutoring youth, AIDS awareness activities, and cook-outs in the spring. NPHC hosts a NPHC week in the spring featuring events such as: a council-wide awards ceremony, College Preparation service project, and council dinner.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the largest men's organization at UNC, serving as the governing body for 21 member fraternities and over 1400 men. IFC fraternities are a home away from home where lasting friendships are made and networks with thousands of alumni are found. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Interfraternity Council represents and provides undergraduate fraternity members a profound experience by encouraging philanthropy, community service, academic success, networking, and organizational growth. Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, the IFC had the privilege of supplying over 600 meals to health care workers at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Panhellenic Association is the largest women’s organization on campus. The Panhellenic Association Executive Council is the governing body of all the individual chapters. The Council promotes excellence in academics, community and campus involvement, and sisterhood.

Sisterhood Joining a Panhellenic Sorority is the beginning of a lifelong commitment and of lifelong friendships. This is a way to find your home away from home during your time at Carolina.

Through sisterhood, you are able to form bonds with these women unlike any other. You will share in successes, happiness, and support each other in times of sorrow. You will find that relaxing and laughing with each other will be some of the most fulfilling times you and your sisters will have together.

Sisterhood is more than wearing the same Greek letters– it is about a sense of belonging, companionship, and community.

Academics

Academic achievement is the primary reason we are all attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Panhellenic (PHA) recognizes the importance of scholarship. The University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL) requires a minimum 2.50 GPA in order to participate in recruitment. Each Panhellenic organization has their own GPA requirements and is able to make its own membership decisions regarding maintaining a minimum GPA. It is important to understand that if your GPA is lower than a chapter’s average GPA, your opportunities for joining may decrease.

We encourage you to inquire about this during recruitment.

Leadership and Involvement Panhellenic Women contribute so much to the Carolina and surrounding Chapel Hill communities. Each year, thousands of volunteer hours are recorded by Panhellenic Women within hundreds of organizations. This service and philanthropy is completed both individually and in groups in organizations like Carolina for the Kids, Orange County Rape Crisis Center, TABLE, Make-A-Wish, and many, many more!

Chapters also host their own philanthropy and service events throughout the year to benefit their national and local philanthropies. Panhellenic sororities often come together with each other and Fraternities and Sororities from other councils to participate in events and positively impact the greater community.

Outside of philanthropy and service, Panhellenic women are leaders in organizations and activities all across campus.

If you decide to accept a bid at the end of Primary Recruitment, your chapter will encourage you to get involved! Leadership development is one of the benefits of being in a sorority. Every chapter has many avenues to get involved within the organization.

Whether you choose to get involved in a larger role like an Executive Board position, or in a smaller role as a member of a committee, there are ways for each member to exercise leadership. The leadership roles that your sorority will provide you will help you to further your leadership ability and grow so that you can be the best leader possible in and out of your chapter.

Members of fraternities and sororities are involved in student organizations like Student Government, UNC Athletics, Carolina Union Activities Board, Residence Hall Association, and many other major and interest based groups! Striking a balance between academics and extracurricular activities is an important part of college life. Involvement in both areas will provide a well-rounded Carolina experience.

Philanthropy UNC Panhellenic supports two philanthropies; the National Alliance for Eating Disorders and CEED, the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. CEED is a world leader in treatment, research, and training. Below are the two largest fundraising events hosted by the Panhellenic Executive Board that support our commitment to supporting and educating our community about eating disorders.

Fundraising Each year, Panhellenic hosts “Greek Groove,” a dance competition among all 11 chapters. The women in each sorority choreograph a dance routine and perform in front of hundreds of members of the Chapel Hill community. This year, 2022, Greek Groove was back in person with the theme “Decades”. The Panhellenic community was able to raise nearly $13,000 for our philanthropies, with three winning chapters earning donations for their individual philanthropies! In previous years, we have raised and donated as much as $30,000. Greek Groove is always a wonderful event that creates Panhellenic unity and raises needed funds for an incredible organization close to our campus.

Per the National Alliance for Eating Disorders website, Southern Smash was "founded in November 2012 by McCall Dempsey… to fill a silent void in our society. Poor body image and negative self-talk have sadly become a cultural norm. Through its unique and empowering scale smashing event and SmashTALK panel discussions, the Southern Smash program aims to educate the public about eating disorders and empower individuals to celebrate and embrace true beauty and self-love." Each fall, scales are set up in the Pit to allow students to literally and figuratively smash the idea of a "perfect" body weight.

I am an out of state student and was looking for a "home away from home" during recruitment. I am also an only child and always wanted a sisterhood and I am so lucky to have found it at UNC!

Caroline Yaffa, '24 (she/her) I wanted to join a group of girls I could confide in and be close to while having the opportunity to serve the community and build lifelong friendships. College life is hard, and I needed people who I could turn to when times were tough as well as celebrate with when things were going well. I am so blessed that I had the opportunity to go Panhellenic; my life would not have been the same without it.

As an out of state student, I did not come into Chapel Hill knowing many people. I went Panhel to meet new lifelong friends from all over the country and find a support system to lean on throughout my time at Carolina. Through panhel I have met some of the most amazing, kindhearted, and wonderful girls, in Tri Delta and beyond.

Evelyn Rearden, '23 (she/her) I wanted to surround myself with a group of people that had the same drive for success in all aspects of life that I do. I am so thankful for the group that I am a part of, and for other chapters and groups, because I feel that each one encourages its members to be the best version of themselves!

Isabel Marsigli, '25 (she/her) I had such a supportive community at home and I knew coming into college, I wanted to find that same community aspect. When I went through recruitment and saw how close all of the girls in the chapters were, I knew I would find my community in Panhel. I have made some of the best memories with those who have become lifelong friends in only a year.

Caitlin Clontz, '25 (she/her) I grew up with a single mother and two older sisters, so it was super important to me to continue having a strong, supportive group of women in college. Going through rush was terrifying, but I found the chapter that made me feel confident, loved, and excited to be a student at UNC each day.

I was scared I wouldn’t find my home away from home, but because of Panhellenic I have been able to meet so many amazing women and make memories to last a lifetime! Potential New Member Bill of Rights Each Potential New Member has the right to: Be treated as an individual.

Be fully informed about the recruitment process.

Ask questions and receive true and objective answers from the Panhellenic Executive Board and members.

Be treated with respect.

Be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized.

Ask how and why, and to receive straight answers.

Have and express opinions to the Panhellenic Executive Board.

Have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with the Panhellenic Executive Board.

Make informed choices without undue pressure from others.

Be fully informed about the binding agreements implicit in the membership acceptance signing.

Make one’s own choice and decision and accept full responsibility for the results of that decision.

Have a positive, safe and enriching recruitment and new member experience.

Report infractions to the Panhellenic Executive Board.

Anti-Hazing Policy

Your experience during recruitment and as a new member in a Panhellenic sorority should never involve activities that make you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill does not tolerate hazing in any form, and therefore it is strictly prohibited. Additionally, hazing is a violation of all National Panhellenic Conference organization policies, UNC PHA policies, the UNC Code of Student Conduct, and state and federal laws. For more information, contact the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life or the Office of Student Conduct.

Mutual Selection Process At the end of every round, PNMs will prioritize the sororities whose events they have attended, in preferential order. At the same time, the sororities are submitting their selection of PNMs to invite back in preferential order. Each PNM's preferences and sorority's selections are processed to generate invitations to the next round.

An hour before the events begin for the next round, PNMs will receive their schedule of events for that day. A PNM will not know which sororities have invited her back until receiving a schedule.

For example, after the end of Round 1, PNMs will make selections.

The PNMs will have visited all 11 sororities this round, but can only preference the 10 NPC organizations. The maximum number of sororities a PNM can attend during Round 2 is 7. Therefore, a PNM will 'preference' the 7 she would "LIKE" to return to as #1 and rank the remaining 3 in preferential order (2, 3, and 4).

This does NOT guarantee that a PNM will receive invitations to her top 7. This simply allows the NPC Recruitment Specialist to guide sororities on the number of Potential New Members they may invite.

The purpose of this is to create a culture of equality for invitations among sororities. This process will continue for Rounds 2 and 3.

PNMs may only prioritize, they may not 'delete' any sororities from their schedules or choose to not rank a sorority to guarantee she will not return. A PNM may only prioritize sororities that she has attended that round and prioritize up to the maximum number that a PNM can visit the next round.

The maximum amount for Round 2 is 7. Round 3 is 5, and Round 4 is 2. In some cases, PNMs may not have attended the maximum amount, therefore, they will only make selections from the number of sororities that they visited in the previous round. They will then prioritize the remaining options to the maximum number of parties allowed for the next round.

GXs and PRT will be able to help you with this process! This is the National Panhellenic Conference standard.

Ask questions when you do not understand.

Some events will have more PNMs in attendance than others, and this is not a reflection of a chapter.

You must attend all events for which you receive an invitation.Failure to attend an event may jeopardize your ability to receive invitations.

Being a legacy of a group does not ensure membership in that group.

Accurate financial information regarding membership is available for you.

ALL NPC ORGANIZATIONS HAVE POLICIES AGAINST HAZING. No chapter member may promise or imply the promise of a bid.

You are expected to act politely and respectfully when attending an event. In return, you should expect to be treated politely and with respect.

Every woman attending a preference event must appear on that sorority's bid list, but this does not ensure an invitation to join that particular sorority because recruitment is a mutual selection process.

You must be certain that you understand the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) that you will be expected to sign immediately after attending the last preference event. More information on the MRABA is available on page 29 (Round 4).

Men, romantic partners, and alcohol are not permitted during recruitment or bid day activities.

The Panhellenic sororities at UNC invest hundreds of hours putting together recruitment. Be mindful of this when asking about other options during rounds.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Panhellenic at UNC strives for fairness. This is the basis of our rules. The bottom-line: Panhellenic sororities have up to 200 members during recruitment that make decisions as a group about who to extend invitations for membership to. Your potential connection to or friendship with one or two members of an organization does not guarantee you a bid (invitation for membership). Basically, one or two or even five women cannot make a decision for all 200 members. Do not be misled by, perhaps, false promises. If you feel you have been promised a bid please report this Recruitment Violation as outlined on page 16.

For Potential New Members...

A PNM must be a regularly matriculated (degree-pursuing), full-time UNCChapel Hill student to be eligible to participate in any UNC Panhellenic recruitment processes. Visiting or conditionally admitted students cannot be extended a bid by any of the NPC organizations.

Any full-time students studying abroad should also be eligible, but if you are concerned about your specific eligibility you can contact uncpanhelrecruitment@gmail.com.

Carolina Global Launch students are not full-time UNC students and are eligible for Panhellenic Recruitment upon their return to campus.

A PNM may not have ever been initiated into an NPC organization. If you previously participated in Recruitment, signed an MRABA, but did not get initiated into a chapter, you are eligible for Primary Recruitment. If you are in doubt, please contact the VP Recruitment, Taylor Loyd.

From July 17, 2022 through the extension of bids, no PNM shall visit a sorority chapter facilities except for the approved recruitment events Rounds 1-4.

All PNMs must attend all meetings with GXs, Kickoff, and the maximum number of parties they are invited to. Failure to do so, without an approved absence from PRT, will result in the removal of the PNM from the recruitment process. In the event of illness, emergency, or University scheduled activities (athletics practice, move-in, etc) the PNM shall notify PRT and/or their GX. PRT and GXs will work together to notify any chapters involved. If you are aware of any conflicts that you have before the recruitment process begins, please submit this information in writing via email as soon as possible to the Panhellenic Council at uncpanhelrecruitment@gmail.com. If conflicts arise during the week, your GX will provide the information you will need.

In order to participate in Primary Recruitment, PNMs must pay the registration fee of $75 or be approved for a PNM Scholarship to reduce or waive the fee. Payment must be received by August 14, 2022 at 11:55PM. No applications will be accepted after August 14, 2022 at 11:55PM. The recruitment fee is Non-Refundable.

Be on time for all meetings, events, and parties associated with recruitment.

Wear their Panhellenic name tag during in-person recruitment events and have their preferred name accurately displayed on Zoom during virtual recruitment events.

Provide their own transportation to and from all events. All chapter facilities are within walking distance of UNC campus and a majority of frequent student housing locations near campus.

Remain in designated areas for PNMs during and between recruitment rounds. Our chapters ask that you do not walk behind their houses, and you should never be left alone during a round, but in the case you are please do not wander inside of chapter facilities.

Park in locations designated as open parking. There should be designated parking around campus at locations like the Morehead Planetarium, The Carolina Inn, and in certain parking lots/ decks on Franklin and Rosemary Streets. You should not plan to park at any residence halls, at chapter facilities, or on the streets on campus as move-in parking policies will be in effect at many locations. The UNC Transportation and Parking (move.unc.edu) website can provide more details about parking during the week as the Fall Semester nears.

Honor all invitations to recruitment functions. The only exception is for in extenuating circumstances and with the approval from PRT. Maximize their options by prioritizing all chapters after attending the parties for the round, with the only exception being in the final selection round on the MRABA following Preference (Round 4).

Prioritize chapters immediately after the last party attended in each round. Once preferences have been submitted, no changes may be made.

Adhere to the Strict Silence Period between PNMs, family members (mothers/ sisters), and active sorority members from the time she leaves the last house on Preference Round until bids have been extended by Panhellenic. PNMs may still contact their GX or PRT at any time during this strict silence period.

Consult their GX and/or PRT before withdrawing from recruitment. In the event, a PNM wishes to withdraw, they must complete the official withdrawal form. The PNMs GX and/or PRT may ask you to share about why they want to remove themselves from the recruitment process, but it is not required to share details.

Have no contact outside of designated recruitment rounds with any active members beginning on August 15, 2022 until the distribution of bids on August 23, 2022 at 6:00 PM. Any contact that does occur with active members should be in an educational context only to answer any questions about Panhellenic and promote UNC Panhellenic as a whole.

PNMs should not accept any gifts from any active members at any point.

If you, a PNM, have a roommate, housemate, sibling, or close friend that is an active member of a Panhellenic or associate chapter at UNC that you are concerned about communicating with during this period, the active member has most likely already been in contact with PRT and there is nothing you need to do.

If for any reason you feel that you have witnessed a recruitment rule violation, it is highly encouraged and respected if you file a violation form with Panhellenic. You can do this anonymously if you feel it is necessary. By doing this, you are helping UNC Panhellenic and the Fraternity and Sorority community at UNC to promote fair, ethical behavior. Recruitment violations will, unfortunately, occur and we appreciate your concern to help prevent them. We ask that you do your best to get specific details, names, exact wording, and setting if you suspect a violation. You should not tell everyone about this situation - only those necessary that could help you to solve the problem or prevent future occurrence. Your GX, PRT, or any OFSL staff member are great private resources to talk to and gain access to the violation form. Otherwise, please email fsl@email.unc.edu or call (919)962-8298 with more details regarding the incident if you are not comfortable providing your name to anyone.

All information is kept confidential from chapters and reporting an incident will have no bearing on your recruitment outcomes.

Make Your Own Decision This is your choice. Don't listen to the opinions of friends, a significant other, or other potential new members. It is an honor to be a part of UNC Panhellenic.

Each sorority maintains high membership qualifications. Keep an open mind and make the most of all invitations you may receive. You have the opportunity to make friends in any sorority.

Eat and Sleep Properly Recruitment week is a long process. Please make sure you take care of your body by eating a nutritious breakfast, drinking water, and sleeping. Your GX and PJBs will have snacks to eat and maybe water to refill if you feel light headed or just hungry. Please take advantage of these resources if you need them, but come prepared with your own snacks and water.

Keep Comments to Yourself

If you don't like a particular sorority, make sure that you're not basing your opinion on a woman you met in the sorority or on someone else's negative opinions. If you're still unsure about a particular sorority for you, do not share your opinion with others. It should be a private decision. You never know when your least favorite choice could be someone else's top choice. If an issue needs to be addressed or you need advice, you can speak with your GX.

Relieve Yourself Don't be afraid to use the bathroom during a party. You may be offered water at each party. Women know that you will have to use the bathroom. They will not hold it against you or assume that you're not interested in conversation with them. When you gotta go, you gotta go!

Temperatures are Hot Be sure to drink plenty of water, and even LiquidIV or Gatorade. Keep a water bottle in your bag between rounds. Wear comfortable, light clothing that you wouldn't mind sweating a little bit in. Maybe even consider bringing a mini handheld fan if you tend to overheat.

Unacceptable Behavior

Formal recruitment week is a very important week. UNC Panhellenic encourages you to make the most of this first weekend in Chapel Hill.

However, consuming alcohol, attending parties, and/or going to bars until the "dry period" is over is not permitted.

The "dry period" begins at 8 AM on Thursday, August 18 and continues until 5PM Wednesday, August 24.

Schedule August 18 and 19, 2022 Round 1 will be split into two days in order to allow time to meet all of the Panhellenic chapters! Both Round 1.1 and 1.2 will be VIRTUAL on Zoom.

Round 1.1 will take place on Thursday, August 18 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:50 P.M. This day will consist of 7 “parties” that last 20 minutes. You will only attend 6 of these parties on this day.

Round 1.2 will take place on Friday, August 19 from 5:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. This day will consist of 9 parties that last 20 minutes. You will only attend 5 of these parties on this day.

The round will start after classes on both days.

Where to Meet Your GX You will meet your GXs virtually before rounds begin with a group of about 20-30 other PNMs. More information about GX groups will be shared in the days leading up to Recruitment Kickoff and GX will communicate with you frequently as Recruitment nears.

PNMs will be required to meet with GXs about an hour before parties begin for each round. This will be a space to ask questions, connect with other PNMs and your GXs, and relax before the round begins.

Conversation Conversation will be very casual and just slightly more than small talk.

Some sororities will have you meet 3-4 members or more and in other chapters you may meet only one member. Be prepared to share basic information about yourself, what you hope to be involved in on campus, what your interests outside of academics are, and what your intended major is. As this is values-based recruitment you may also be asked to share about what you are looking for in a sorority and what common values you may share with the organizations.

What Follows After this round of parties, you will have the opportunity to prioritize (aka submit your preferences about) which chapters you would like to return to in the next round. You may only prioritize chapters that you visited during this round. Even though you will attend Phi Beta Chi (PBX) during Round 1 you cannot include the chapter in your officially submitted preferences as they will not be participating in any more rounds of Primary Recruitment.

Talk to your GX if you know after Round 1 that Phi Beta Chi may be the best fit for you. Each PNM will receive invitations from up to 7 chapters in the next round.

Remember, this is a mutual selection process. While there is a chance you will be disappointed by not receiving an invitation from a specific chapter, it is an honor to receive invitations back to any chapter! You should focus on the chapters that have invited you back for the following rounds as they want to continue to get to know you and think you may be a fit for their organization.

What to Wear Round 1 will be held virtually and is an introductory round!

The attire for this round is considered dressy casual and you should be comfortable in what you choose to wear. It is important to wear pants while on Zoom, but only tops and accessories will be discussed in this section, as Zoom typically only shows mid-torso up.

Below are some items you can consider wearing for this round: Fun tops, graphic tees, sundresses, rompers - basically any nice and casual attire with straps Accessorize with jewelry as you want to - necklaces and earrings are most visible for virtual recruitment and can be used to show off your personality from the start Avoid strapless tops, hoodies, tops with deep v- necks - these can look interesting on Zoom (and not usually in a good way) Avoid any top or jewelry you are not comfortable wearing for a long time - this is a long round!

Saturday, August 20, 2022 Round 2 will be IN PERSON. This round, you will visit each chapter facility on your personalized schedule. Round 2 will take place on Saturday, August 20 from 10:00 A.M. to 10:30 P.M. This day will consist of 14 parties that last 35 minutes. You will only attend up to 8 of these parties on this day.

Where to Meet Your GX Your Gamma Chis will communicate with you likely at the end of Round 1 about an on campus location to meet at about an hour before Round 2 parties begin. GXs will also help to provide directions to any on campus locations as this may be one of your first times navigating campus.Your GX will share your party schedule including which chapters you were invited back to with you privately at this meeting.

Conversation The conversation during this round will feel more relaxed than it did in Round 1. You will have a better chance to get to know 2-5 more members of each chapter you are invited back to. Be prepared to hear Sisters talk about the chapter’s philanthropy events and potentially what the chapter philanthropy means to them. Some sisters may share what Panhellenic service and philanthropy events they enjoy most. You can expect to share about any service or philanthropic experiences you have or hope to have in your collegiate years!

During round 2, each chapter will discuss finances of membership in their organization with all PNMs. If you have questions regarding this conversation, you can ask chapter members, GXs, or PRT.

As this round is the first in person round and Carolina summers are VERY hot and humid, you should dress comfortably! We recommend dressy casual shorts or a skirt with shoes that you are comfortable walking in, such as your favorite fashion sneakers or flats. You may have to walk a couple of miles between chapter facilities, so don't be afraid to pack an extra pair of shoes for walking.

Conversation The conversation during this round should give you a great idea about what membership in each chapter could look like and what sisterhood events they host. The conversation will be fun, but also more serious than previous rounds as it is educational. Chapters will give a tour of their chapter facilities and you may meet one or more members at each chapter you are invited to. Be prepared to learn about what it’s like to live in the chapter house and picture yourself in the Sisterhood.

What Follows You will have the opportunity to prioritize the chapters and can receive up to 2 invitations for Preference Round (Round 4).

Continued excitement for the chapters that have invited you back will help you ensure that you have the best chances possible to receive a bid on Bid Day.

What to Wear This round, there is not a required shirt to wear. The attire for this round is increasingly nicer from previous rounds but not quite as nice as round 4. Think a nice brunch, dinner with friends and family, or business casual.

Possible things to wear can include sundresses, skirts, or fun pants - but no jeans! Like the other rounds, accessories can be used to show off your personality however you'd like!

This is a long round so make sure whatever you wear is comfortable to wear all day in warm North Carolina weather.

Monday, August 22, 2022 Parties will begin at 6:00 PM and end at 11:05 PM. PNMs will attend up to 2 chapters IN PERSON for 45 minutes each with a 20 minute break between each party. Each PNM will have at least 2 break parties during this round.

Where to Meet Your GX You will meet your GX group at an on-campus location determined by your GXs. Your GXs will communicate with you about this location as recruitment nears.

Conversation

This conversation will be the most serious. The goal of this round is to learn why membership in each sorority means so much to the members. You should get a sense of whether or not you can see yourself as a member of the chapter. Do your values align with those of the members and the organization as a whole? In most chapters you will have a long conversation with only 1 or 2 chapter members who are excited to really get to know you. This round can be emotional, so be mindful of sorority rituals, members’ heartfelt poems, readings, or songs. You should have been thinking deeply about sorority membership over the past few rounds - be ready to listen to the sorority members, but you can also ask questions or share your own experiences in conversation if you wish. Don’t be afraid to express your excitement about the chapter(s) you visit, if applicable.

What Follows

After this round of parties you will prioritize the sororities you attended for the last time. During selections after Round 4 you will sign a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA). More information about selections and the commitment associated with signing the MRABA will be shared at the completion of parties. You will have the choice to prioritize any or all of the sororities you attended during Round 4 on your MRABA. Ranking all chapters you attended during the Preference round will maximize your chances of receiving a bid from at least 1 chapter. If you receive a bid from a chapter, but choose not to accept it you will not be able to participate in Panhellenic Recruitment until Fall 2023. So, while UNC Panhellenic encourages you to maximize your chances of receiving a bid, if you know you cannot see yourself in that sorority you should not include it in your preference night ranking.

Furthermore, if you have no intention of being initiated into that sorority because of finances or any other reason, do not list them in your preference ranking because you may be limiting another PNM who does have hopes of receiving a bid from the sorority and being initiated. After leaving your last Preference parties there is a strict silence period. Until you have received a bid, or been notified you have been released, there should be no contact between any PNM and any active or alumni chapter members. The only Panhellenic chapter members you are permitted to talk to between leaving your last Preference party and opening a bid is any GX, PJB, or member of PRT.

What to Wear

Preference round is a ceremony and your attire should be the most formal for this round. Think about what you might wear to a wedding or to a fancy dinner with family or friends. Avoid full length dresses, too many sequins, feathers, long sleeves, or anything else that may be uncomfortable to wear for a long period of time. Patterns and bold colors are okay to wear as they can help show off your personality.

Goals

On Bid Day you will finally get to open Bid Cards alongside other PNMs in your GX group! This is the time when you will find out what organization you are invited to become a member of. After opening cards, you will meet your new sisters and attend a Bid Day celebration at the chapter facility!

Where to Meet Your GX Gamma Chis will be in communication with you throughout recruitment about what to expect on Bid Day. You will meet your GX with other members of your PNM group at a location on campus that may be different from previous meeting spots.

All PNMs will arrive in the Great Hall in the Student Union to watch the Gamma Chis reveal what organizations they are members of, and then PNMs will open Bid Cards! We hope that even after primary recruitment your GXs are still Panhellenic women you feel comfortable talking with whether they are in your chapter or another one.

What to Expect Next

On Bid Day you are now New Members of your organization.

Another active member of the organization will lead you and other new members through programming and education as part of the Panhellenic New Member Education process. If you have any questions about the New Member process, your GX, any member of Panhellenic organizations, or any member of PRT can answer questions you have. The most important thing to expect after opening bids is that Bid Day is a very exciting day for all Panhellenic women!! Enjoy the day and enjoy the exciting opportunities and friendships that Panhellenic membership will surely bring!

The Alternative Result Even though you attended Preference Round at one or more chapters or listed sororities on your preference card, it is possible you may not be matched with a chapter due to: 1. Not maximizing your preferences 2. Withdrawing from the Primary Recruitment process before signing a preference card Following distribution of bids, you may still have the opportunity to participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB) if the sororities decide to participate given they have additional bids to give.

COB can occur in both fall and spring semesters.

Spring Recruitment is an informal process in which you attend open/unstructured events hosted by participating sororities.

The average sorority dues for a member not living in the house for our UNC Panhellenic Chapters as of Fall 2022 are approximately $2300 per semester.

Dues for members who choose to live in their chapter’s house average around $4,500 per semester.

Additionally, many chapters have fees associated with being a newly initiated member, for which dues average around $2700 in total for the first semester as a member.

Chapter dues fund a variety of things, such as local and national membership dues that allow organizations wholly to operate. Notably, dues go towards a meal plan, maintaining a chapter’s house or facilities, social events, sisterhood events, or upholding any other traditions that your chapter may have. Live-in dues are used to pay for the house itself, be it a mortgage or rent of some sort. Most in house member dues are less expensive than the average apartment's rent in Chapel Hill!

The additional cost associated with being a new member grants membership for life and reflects a long term membership into sisterhood, giving access into the sorority’s broader national network and vast resources.

Some UNC scholarships may cover parts of membership costs, such as in-house living costs.

Registration The link to register for 2022 Panhellenic Recruitment at UNC is HERE The registration link will go live on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 and will close on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at 11:59 PM. All payments must be received and PNM accounts must be finalized by the time registration closes. The cost to register for recruitment is $75 and is NONREFUNDABLE. There is no financial benefit to registering earlier, but this may allow you to connect with your Gamma Chi sooner to answer any questions you may have.

Scholarship

The Panhellenic Executive Board will be providing a PNM Scholarship on a case-by-case needs basis.

There will be two options for the scholarship: Option 1: a fee waiver where you would pay $0 of the registration fee.

Option 2: a reduced fee where you would pay $25 of the registration fee.

There are limited funds available, and they will be considered on a rolling basis. The application will close Sunday, August 14th at 11:55 PM. Recruitment Processes

Phi Beta Chi is a PHA associate member that participates only in Round 1 of Primary Recruitment. At the conclusion of Round One, Phi Beta Chi removes themselves from the Panhellenic Primary Recruitment process.

They will continue their recruitment after Panhellenic’s Bid Day festivities. At any other point in the Primary Recruitment Process before signing the MRABA, if you feel that Phi Beta Chi may be the best fit for you, your GX or a member of PRT can talk to you about the next steps.

Their recruitment process follows an informal plan including a kickoff, Philanthropy Night, Sisterhood Night, Preference Night, and Bid Day. What if I want to drop out of Recruitment?

This is YOUR journey and what you make of it. While your Gamma Chis and us on Panhellenic Exec hope you find your home here, we respect your decisions to do what is best for you. You might change your mind, but recruitment is a great time to make new friends, learn about UNC, see what other people are involved in on campus, and so much more. We encourage you to talk through your feelings on dropping and doubts you may have with your Gamma Chi or a member of Panhellenic Recruitment Team before making a decision.

What should I wear? What else should I bring?

Feeling confident and comfortable are the two most important things when picking outfits. You should express your style while still being appropriate. In Round 2, chapters and PNMs will wear t-shirts that you may style at your discretion. Each chapter will get progressively dressier as the rounds go on, so you may want to parallel that, as well. See the individual round pages for more detail on outfits and the "Essentials" page for additional things you may want to have with you during rounds!

What do I do if I have to miss a round?

There’s no opportunity to make-up for the houses that you miss. We will tell chapters you will be missing the round, however, each sorority handles it differently. They are not required to invite you back to the next round.

Please communicate with the Panhellenic Recruitment Team and your Gamma Chi immediately about any conflict you may have. We encourage you to communicate with your employers well in advance in order to request off the dates for recruitment rounds and bid day (August 18-23).

Virtual options for round participation will be made available with an appropriate request and reasoning.

Are letters of recommendation required?

They are NOT required for you to go into recruitment. Each sorority has a different recommendation policy. Please see the chapter’s websites for specific policies regarding letters of recommendation.

When am I allowed to live in a chapter house?

First year students are not allowed to live in chapter houses per University policies. House availability is limited, so you are not guaranteed to live in a chapter house during membership. You can consider asking about living in chapter houses during Round 3.

What if I don't think I can afford a sorority?

It is important to make the wisest financial decision for you. Many sororities offer payment plans for dues, and although Panhellenic and some sororities offer scholarships, not all chapters do. Available scholarships may be partial amounts or limited in number. Please think about your individual situation, also weighing the financial advantages you may have through membership: sororities offer the cheapest meal plans on campus and housing for in-house members is significantly cheaper than many other housing options at UNC, including oncampus housing.

What do those registation funds go to?

There are many elements that go into the cost of registration that allow the process to run smoothly. Some of these costs include supplies for PNMS, Gamma Chis, and PJBs, software programs, venue rentals, custodial services, other contracted employees, and donation to our philanthropy.

Will my grades suffer?

No. The average GPA of women in Panhellenic sororities is a 3.569.

Many sororities have incentives for getting good grades and encourage their members to do well in classes. Many chapters have study rooms, offer study hours with incentives, and have rewards and prizes for doing well academically.

What if I'm a legacy?

You’re not guaranteed a bid from a sorority if you’re a legacy. Each sorority handles legacy status differently, so don’t rely on this alone to get you through a round. Letters are no longer required by NPC.

Am I at a disadvantage if I am not a legacy?

No. Every PNM has a fair chance during recruitment.

Panhellenic Recruitment Team PRT consists of the Panhellenic Executive Council. The 8 women on PRT oversee all recruitment processes and are members of Panhellenic chapters

Panhellenic Association The Panhellenic Association at UNC-Chapel Hill is a Collegiate Panhellenic Chapter of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). PHA is made up of 10 chapters and one associate chapter. May also be referred to as "Panhel" or "Panhellenic".

Any woman currently a member of a Panhellenic sorority.

Potential New Member - YOU! Any woman participating in the recruitment process is considered a Potential New Member.

Recruitment rounds consist of a number of parties and breaks. PNMs will have the opportunity to meet many chapters during each round. Each round has a different theme (Go Panhellenic, Philanthropy, Sisterhood and House Tours, Preference).

Created in 2020, the Panhellenic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee works to promote and create a more welcoming and inclusive Panhellenic community through addressing racial, economic, and social injustices within. Read a letter from the Outgoing Committee Chair and a list of committee members on Page 3. We look forward to introducing the incoming committee before recruitment.

A potential new member with a relative who is an active or alumnae member of a Panhellenic sorority. Legacy policies and considerations vary from chapter to chapter and some chapters no longer have preferential legacy policies.

Your recruitment counselor. Each Potential New Member will have 2 Gamma Chis who are disaffiliated active members of Panhellenic sororities at UNC. They are juniors or seniors who will support you throughout the recruitment process.

Panhellenic Judicial Board Every Panhellenic chapter has 1 representative that serves on the PJB and who organizes PNMs in chapter Zoom waiting rooms or outside chapter facilities. They are present to support PNMs throughout recruitment and enforce recruitment rules.

Opened by a UNC Kenan-Flagler alum, these NY-style bagels are hard to beat, especially with their specialty spreads.

Open for 100 years in 2022, this locally owned restaurant is a favorite for meals, coffee, and is also a great study spot! Check out their new coffee shop next door, called 1922.

Open 24 hours! Time-Out is famous for their chicken and cheddar biscuit and has been featured on many food shows over the years.

Located on the roof on the corner of Franklin and S. Columbia, TOPO is the best place to watch the sun set over Franklin St. and enjoy delicious food.

Originally opened in 1923, Sutton’s began as a Drug Store and has transitioned into the beloved diner we know today. Famous for their burgers, the walls are full of UNC memorabilia and photos of patrons from over the years.

A family owned business, Yopo became the first frozen yogurt shop in the state of North Carolina in 1982. They have staple flavors and weekly flavors as well, in addition to sorbets!

A locally owned coffee shop and bookstore right on Franklin Street. They serve a variety of Latin coffee drinks and pastries, and have many unique and rare books for sale.

Everyone’s favorite place to get a smoothie or açai bowl on Franklin!

A local Black-owned business that recently opened a location in Chapel Hill! They serve classic chicken & waffles in addition to specialty waffles, schmears, and other twists on the dish.

A lively Mexican restaurant with great vibes and even better food, right by Granville and Carolina Square. They have live music sometimes, too!

Located right on Campus, this art museum has wonderful exhibits that are engaging and educational. It houses both a permanent exhibition and cycles through traveling exhibits.

If you’re a cat lover, this is the place for you! Come hang out with sweet, adoptable cats from a local shelter.

A traditional movie theater right on Franklin Street that shows a range of films.This past basketball season, the Theater hosted watch parties for the UNC vs. Duke games!

Located at the intersection of Raleigh and Cameron Street, the Arboretum is a 5.3 acre area full of countless species of plants. There are plenty of benches, open areas to sit and relax, and walking paths.

There’s always a game to see at UNC! Collect Carolina Fever Points and cheer on the ‘Heels at any of our athletic events. Check out the UNC Athletics Calendar for details on all the upcoming games.

One of the largest performance venues on campus, often hosting guest performers from the NC Symphony to solo musicians, dance troupes, speakers, and more.

A professional regional theater, right on UNC campus! They perform many plays and musicals each year, and students get discounted tickets!

A longstanding iconic monument across from South Building. Legend has it, drinking from the Old Well on FDOC will result in a 4.0 GPA!

During Welcome Week, student organizations set up displays at Hooker Fields. You can walk around with friends, enjoy food and entertainment, and see which clubs you might be interested in!

This outdoor venue is perfect any day for a nice walk or short hike, and sometimes holds performances as well!
