On behalf of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Panhellenic Association and Executive Board, I would like to welcome you to Primary Panhellenic Recruitment! I want to let you know that we are all so excited for you. Being a part of Sorority Life at UNC is truly an amazing opportunity. I understand that you might be feeling really anxious and unsure right now about what to expect from recruitment, but please know you are not alone.

Whatever your story is, we hope you find your place within UNC Panhellenic and I hope this year’s “Go Panhellenic” recruitment guide helps to give you a better look at what to expect in August and from the UNC Panhellenic community as a whole!

Reflecting on my own experiences and some that other Panhellenic women at UNC have shared with me, I would love to pass on a few things to you.

First, welcome to the UNC Panhellenic Community.

We are excited to tell all about our organizations and the values that mean so much to each of us. Second, remember that this process is all about YOU! Throughout recruitment it is important to keep an open mind, positive attitude, and listen to your heart (not your mom, friend, or sister’s!). I really believe that if you are able to do these you will be able to find the chapter that is the best fit for you. Finally, remember to have fun. Recruitment can be stressful, but please take time to relax, meet other PNMs and students, and make the most of it!

When you decide to register for recruitment, I want to assure you that you are opening opportunities within Panhellenic, the broader Carolina community, and beyond. Though this process is intimidating, about 17% of Undergraduate students at UNC are a member of a Fraternity or Sorority. There will always be a familiar face around campus. Panhellenic women are proud of our excellence in sisterhood, academics, community and campus involvement, and philanthropy.

Through leadership in many student organizations, the connection between Panhellenic women extends far beyond the bounds of a single chapter house and even beyond Chapel Hill.

There is no doubt that my experiences within UNC Panhellenic, starting the moment I signed up for recruitment, have shaped me and will continue to shape me into the woman I am and will become. The friendships and memories I have made are so meaningful to me, just as they are to so many other Panhellenic women. I am so excited to welcome you each into this supportive and incredible community - I truly wish each of you the best of luck with recruitment!

The Panhellenic community at Chapel Hill has embraced Diversity. With the creation of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, we, as a community, have taken the appropriate steps to improve our sisterhood. We understand our past, and the committee is a step towards our future.

During our first year, the Panhellenic DE&I Committee has created newsletters, performed in training sessions, and sent out a multitude of resources. Our goal, as a committee as well as an organization, was to educate our members of our past and how to improve going forward. By recognizing our racist and classist past, we can acknowledge what steps we need to take to improve. This committee is a testament to the values that we desire within our sisterhood and those we are trying to attract.

When going through recruitment we want you to know that we are not done yet. We acknowledge the problems within our community, but we also take it upon ourselves to make an impact towards the future.

Established in 2000, the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is home to ten cultural and interest-based fraternities and sororities. The mission of MGC is to serve the entire student body through our efforts to improve campus life by fostering collaboration among and within all of the member chapters. By building interaction between diverse groups, the Multicultural Greek Council hopes that its members collaborate effectively and learn to appreciate people whose race, sexual identity, gender, gender expression, religion, ethnicity, and interests may be different from their own.

Carolina is home to eight historically African American fraternities and sororities which are governed by the UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. These organizations are serviceoriented and conduct philanthropic events and hands-on community projects in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. NPHC organizations host a variety of social, service and cultural programs throughout the year aimed at educating members of the Carolina community and uplifting all people in the community-at-large. NPHC sponsors the annual Homecoming Step Show in November as well as programs such as "Meet the Greeks" to educate new students about the different historically Black Greek letter organizations on campus. NPHC also plans service projects, fundraisers, and social events such as tutoring youth, AIDS awareness activities, and cook-outs in the spring. NPHC hosts a NPHC week in the spring featuring events such as: a council-wide awards ceremony, College Preparation service project, and council dinner. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the largest men's organization at UNC, serving as the governing body for 21 member fraternities and over 1400 men. IFC fraternities are a home away from home where lasting friendships are made and networks with thousands of alumni are found. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Interfraternity Council represents and provides undergraduate fraternity members a profound experience by encouraging philanthropy, community service, academic success, networking, and organizational growth. Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic the IFC had the privilege of supplying over 600 meals to health care workers at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Panhellenic Recruitment Team PRT consists of the Panhellenic Executive Council. The 8 women on PRT oversee all recruitment processes.

Any woman currently a member of a Panhellenic sorority.

Potential New Member YOU! Any woman participating in the recruitment process is considered a Potential New Member.

A recruitment party is one event within a Round. During a party you will meet with one chapter virtually or in person, depending on which round it is a part of. At a recruitment party you may be offered water. There are 15 or 20 minute breaks between parties to allow for movement between chapter zoom links or chapter facilities.

Recruitment rounds consist of a number of parties and breaks. PNMs will have the opportunity to meet many chapters during each round. Each round is 1 day long and has a different theme (Go Panhellenic, Philanthropy, Sisterhood and House Tours, Preference).

Created in 2020, the Panhellenic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee works to promote and create a more welcoming and inclusive Panhellenic community through addressing racial, economic, and social injustices within.

Your recruitment counselor Each Potential New Member will have 2 Gamma Chis who are disaffiliated active members of Panhellenic sororities at UNC. They are juniors or seniors who will support you throughout the recruitment process.

A potential new member with a relative who is an active or alumnae member of a Panhellenic sorority. Legacy policies and considerations vary from chapter to chapter and some chapters no longer have preferential legacy policies.

Panhellenic Association The Panhellenic Association at UNC-Chapel Hill is a Collegiate Panhellenic Chapter of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). PHA is made up of 10 chapters and 1 associate chapter. May also be referred to as "Panhel" or "Panhellenic".

Panhellenic Judicial Board Every Panhellenic chapter has 1 representative that serves on the PJB and who organizes PNMs in chapter Zoom waiting rooms or outside chapter facilities. They are present to support PNMs throughout recruitment and enforce recruitment rules. Α

REMEMBER THAT SORORITY MEMBERSHIP IS FOR LIFE AND TO MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION.

This is your choice. Don't listen to your friends', boyfriend's, or other potential new members' opinions. It is an honor to be a part of UNC Panhellenic. Each sorority maintains high membership qualifications. Keep an open mind and make the most of all invitations you may receive. There are women just like you that you could be friends with in every sorority.

EAT BREAKFAST AND GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP.

Recruitment week is a long process. Please make sure you take care of your body by eating a nutritious breakfast, drinking water, and sleeping.

Your GX and PJBs will have snacks to eat and maybe water to refill if you feel light headed or just hungry. Please take advantage of these resources if you need them, but come prepared with your own snacks and water.

COMMENTS SHOULD BE KEPT TO YOURSELF.

If you don't like a particular sorority, make sure that you're not basing your opinion on one woman you met in the sorority or on someone else's negative opinions. If you're still unsure about a particular sorority for you, do not share your opinion with others. It should be a private decision. You never know when your least favorite choice could be someone else's top choice.

RELIEVE YOURSELF.

Don't be afraid to use the bathroom during a party. You may be offered water at each party. Women know that you will have to use the bathroom. They will not hold it against you or assume that you're not interested in conversation with them. When you gotta go, you gotta go!

UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR INCLUDES GOING OUT DURING RECRUITMENT WEEK.

The recruitment week is a very important week. UNC Panhellenic encourages you to make the most of this first weekend in Chapel Hill. However, consuming alcohol, attending parties, and/or going to bars until the "dry period" is over is not permitted. The "dry period" begins at 9 AM on Friday, August 13 and continues until 5PM Wednesday, August 18.

TEMPERATURES ARE HOT!

Be sure to be drinking plenty of water, and even electrolytes or Gatorade. Wear comfortable, light clothing that you wouldn't mind sweating a little bit in. Maybe even consider bringing a mini handheld fan if you tend to overheat.

Umbrella/ Rain Jacket

there is always a chance for rain during recruitment. It also may be nice to use the umbrella for shade from the sun.

Flip Flops/ Comfortable Shoes

we HIGHLY recommend bringing a pair of flip flops or other comfortable slip on shoes to wear before, between, and after your parties. There will be lots of walking throughout recruitment and there is no need to wear uncomfortable shoes for any longer than necessary!

Bag/ Tote

Panhellenic will not provide a tote bag for you to carry the essentials, but we highly recommend bringing something that can hold all the things you’ll need between rounds. You will leave this bag outside of chapter houses during parties and GXs and PJBs will be outside chapter houses to watch them. Things that you may choose to include in your essential tote bag are hair brush, hair spray, mirror (phone selfie camera also works for this!), light makeup (powder), anything else that you know may make you more comfortable!

Deodorant it will be hot and humid and this will help!

Handheld fan

this is not required, but it may help you feel more comfortable in the North Carolina heat and humidity!

Water Bottle

water may be available outside the chapter houses, but you should bring your own water bottle with lots of ice in case you do not have time to stop and get a drink outside of every house

Carolina Housing and Granville will be sharing information about their movein processes, dates for selecting move-in times, and dates for move-in directly to you so please watch for information from those sources.

UNC Panhellenic, Carolina Housing, and Granville will NOT be able to change any move-in times for women participating in Primary Recruitment. So you can register as early as possible, it is important to watch your email inbox that you provided to Carolina Housing or Granville for information and details about these dates so you can register for a move-in time. We recommend using and checking your UNC email with format: "onyen"@email.unc.edu.

If for some reason you are not able to register for move-in time before Round 1 parties begin, please contact UNC Panhellenic and we will work with you on an individual basis to ensure you can attend as many parties as possible.

NOTE: Virtual sorority recruitment is not a qualifying in-person university program for early arrivals prior to August 11th. Priority to select earlier move-in time slots WILL NOT be given to individuals participating in virtual sorority recruitment. Move-in appointment selection will be first-come/first-served, after the details are shared via email. (from Granville Towers) If you are an upperclass or transfer student moving in to on or off campus housing with concerns about your lease start date please contact VP Recruitment, uncpanhelrecruitment@gmail.com, for individual assistance.

Each Potential New Member has: The right to be treated as an individual.

The right to ask questions and receive true and objective answers from the Panhellenic Executive Board and members.

The right to be treated with respect.

The right to be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized.

The right to ask how and why, and to receive straight answers.

The right to have and express opinions to the Panhellenic Executive Board.

The right to have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with the Panhellenic Executive Board.

The right to make informed choices without undue pressure from others.

The right to be fully informed about the binding agreements implicit in the membership acceptance signing.

Your experience during recruitment and as a new member in a Panhellenic sorority should never involve activities that make you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill does not tolerate hazing in any form, and therefore it is strictly prohibited. Additionally, hazing is a violation of all National Panhellenic Conference organization policies, UNC PHA policies, the UNC Code of Student Conduct, and state and federal laws.

The Panhellenic Association

is the largest women’s organization on campus. It is the governing body of all the individual chapters. The Council promotes excellence in academics, community and campus involvement, and sisterhood.

Joining a Panhellenic Sorority is the beginning of a lifelong commitment and of lifelong friendships. This is a way to, as cliché as it may be, find a home away from home. One of the best aspects of joining a sorority is the friends you will make through the sisterhood. You will form a bond with these women unlike any other. You will share in successes, happiness, and support each other in the occasional sorrow.

You will find that relaxing and laughing with each other will be some of the most fulfilling times you and your sisters will have together. Sisterhood is more than wearing the same Greek letters - it is about a sense of belonging, companionship, and community.

Academic achievement is the primary reason we are all attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Panhellenic (PHA) recognizes the importance of scholarship.

The University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL) does require that any current UNC students have at least a 2.50 GPA in order to participate in recruitment. Each Panhellenic organization has their own GPA requirements and is able to make its own membership decisions regarding maintaining a minimum GPA. It is important to understand that, as scholarship is a value of Panhellenic, if your GPA is lower than a chapter’s average GPA your opportunities for joining may decrease. We encourage you to inquire about this during recruitment.

Panhellenic Women contribute so much to the Carolina and surrounding Chapel Hill communities. Each year, thousands of volunteer hours are recorded by Panhellenic Women within hundreds of organizations. This service and philanthropy is completed both individually and in groups in organizations like Carolina for the Kids, Orange County Rape Crisis Center, TABLE, Make-A-Wish, and many, many more!

Chapters also host their own philanthropy and service events throughout the year to benefit their national and local philanthropies. Panhellenic sororities often come together with each other and Fraternities and Sororities from other councils to participate in events and positively impact the greater community.

Outside of philanthropy and service, Panhellenic women are leaders in organizations and activities all across campus. If you decide to accept a bid at the end of Primary Recruitment, your chapter will encourage you to get involved! Leadership development is one of the benefits of being in a sorority. Every chapter has multiple opportunities to get involved within the organization. Whether you choose to get involved in a larger role like an Executive Board position, or in a smaller role as a member of a committee, there is a leadership role for everyone! The leadership roles that your sorority will provide you will help you to further your leadership ability and grow so that you can be the best leader possible in and out of your chapter.

Members of fraternities and sororities are involved in student organizations like Student Government, UNC Athletics, Carolina Union Activities Board, Residence Hall Association, and many other major and interest based groups! Striking a balance between academics and extracurricular activities is an important part of college life. Involvement in both areas will provide a well-rounded Carolina experience.

The UNC Panhellenic philanthropy is CEED which is the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. CEED is a world leader in treatment, research, and training. Below are the two largest fundraising events hosted by the Panhellenic Executive Board that support our commitment to supporting and educating our community about eating disorders.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

Each year, Panhellenic hosts “Greek Groove” which is a dance competition between all of the chapters. The women in each sorority choreograph a dance routine and perform in front of hundreds of members of the Chapel Hill community. This year, Greek Groove was done in a virtual format with the theme Boy Bands.

Chapters submitted TikTok videos that fit the theme in hopes of getting the most likes. We ended up raising over $10,700 this year for CEED. In previous years we have raised and donated as much as $30,000.

Greek Groove is always a wonderful event that creates Panhellenic unity and raises needed funds for an incredible organization close to our campus.

Per the Alliance for Eating DIsorders Awareness website, Southern Smash was "founded in November 2012 by McCall Dempsey, Southern Smash was created to fill a silent void in our society. Poor body image and negative self-talk have sadly become a cultural norm. Through its unique and empowering scale smashing event and SmashTALK panel discussions, the Southern Smash program aims to educate the public about eating disorders and empower individuals to celebrate and embrace true beauty and self-love." Each fall, scales are set up in the Pit to allow students to literally and figuratively smash the idea of a "perfect" body weight.

Coming from out of state, I wanted to find a group of women I loved who valued similar things that I do!! Panhellenic has given me the most amazing group of women with such a range of backgrounds who can come together through our events and service.

During my first few weeks at UNC I felt like I was trying everything to find friendships as strong as I had at home, but I felt like I was failing to make any real connections. I was feeling really down and honestly was not sure UNC was the place for me, but a family member of mine was in Panhellenic at UNC and suggested it! After joining a chapter I suddenly had all of these women who supported me in all aspects of my life! They laughed with me, cried with me, danced with me, supported me, and loved me during one of the hardest times of my life! If it wasn’t for Panhellenic I would have ever found my home away from home at UNC! - Hailey Respess (she/her), Class of 2022

As an out-of-state student from 7 hours away, I did not know a single person at UNC and was looking for a way to make lasting friendships despite the pandemic limiting abilities to socialize as first-years.

I went into recruitment unsure of whether or not I would actually find a group of girls I was sure I'd love, but after being met with so much love and excitement from every girl I talked to, I knew I would find those friendships anywhere in Panhel!

- Erin Pearson (she/her), Class of 2024 Both of my parents, my godmother, and other relatives were involved in greek organizations! I knew I wanted a home away from home as well as an opportunity to get involved on campus.

It was one of the best decisions I have ever made... I have met so many amazing people and have had my life changed by being in my sorority!

- Blair Smith (she/her), Class of 2024 I'm from the smallest horse town in South Carolina, where everyone knows everyone and my entire world was a few blocks. But it still would have been easy to feel lost if it wasn't for the people there who grounded me. I was used to being a part of families or groups or organizations that were the center of my life, and they gave me purpose.

Coming into UNC, I knew that I needed to find those groups to continue to ground me, and hearing others' experiences about Panhellenic sororities and the women they met during their time in Greek life gave me comfort and a desire to seek the same out. I found people who would ground me at the Catholic Newman Center on campus, and at my amazing sorority. We even have a large group in our chapter that attends church together and keep each other grounded in our faith. I could not have asked for a better family.

I went Panhellenic because, as a junior transfer with only one year left at UNC, it was very important that I met a group of women who I could not only have fun with but ones that I could grow with and share experiences with. I have definitely found that and I am so glad I went Panhellenic!

...to meet and work with incredibly unique, smart, inspiring women every day! I have experienced this not only in my own chapter, but through meeting other fantastic women in other chapters. I didn’t originally want to rush (to be honest my mom was the one who pushed me to sign up) but on the first day of recruitment I KNEW I made the right choice. During my recruitment experience, I was so surprised at how strong the friendships were at each house. I still meet girls in different sororities that remember me from recruitment in the fall, and they are always so kind to me and encourage me to reach out to them for anything, which as a first-year is so so helpful.

Joining a sorority gives you an insanely large network of women that will listen to you & want to see you succeed. But it’s also so important to know that the process itself gives you something similar. Panhellenic at UNC is really special because you can feel the support throughout and I don’t think you can truly understand it until you go through the process. I am so glad I went Panhellenic, and I would encourage anyone that was on the fence like me to go for it!

What to Expect From Kickoff: Before Kickoff you will be contacted by one or both of your GXs. They will introduce themselves to you and be able to answer any initial questions you have about Panhellenic, UNC, or Chapel Hill. They may connect you with other PNMs in your group by inviting you to a GroupMe message or virtual hang outs. Your GX will also provide all the details you need to know about how to virtually attend Kickoff.

Following Kickoff, your GX may send you a group specific Zoom link to help answer any questions that you still have after the presentation. Feel free to dress very casually and come as you are, you will not need to be on camera at kickoff. You will have a chance to hear from OFSL, PRT, and from some members of each chapter's executive board.

ALL NPC ORGANIZATIONS HAVE POLICIES AGAINST HAZING. No chapter member may promise or imply the promise of a bid.

You are expected to act politely and respectfully when attending an event. In return, you should expect to be treated politely and with respect.

Every woman attending a preference event must appear on that sorority's bid list, but this does not ensure an invitation to join that particular sorority because recruitment is a mutual selection process.

You must be certain that you understand the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) that you will be expected to sign immediately after attending the last preference event.

You may choose to limit or list only one choice on your MRABA, or you may list all the chapters where you attended preference events.

You may choose not to join a group and therefore not sign the MRABA. You must understand that if you list a chapter on your MRABA, are matched to that chapter and receive an invitation to membership, you are bound to that chapter until the next primary recruitment.

Men, romantic partners, and alcohol are not permitted during recruitment or bid day activities.

The Panhellenic sororities at UNC invest hundreds of hours putting together recruitment. Be mindful of this when asking about other options during rounds.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Panhellenic at UNC strives for fairness. This is the basis of our rules. The bottom-line: Panhellenic sororities are comprised of up to 150 members during recruitment that make decisions as a group about who to extend invitations for membership to. Your potential connection to or friendship with one or two members of an organization does not guarantee you a bid (invitation for membership). Basically, one or two or even five women cannot make a decision for all 150 members. Do not be misled by, perhaps, false promises. If you feel you have been promised a bid please report this Recruitment Violation as outlined on page 38.

SCHEDULE

Parties will begin at 3:35 PM and end at 10:55 PM. PNMs will VIRTUALLY attend all 11 chapters for 20 minutes each with a 15 minute break between each party. Each PNM will have at least 2 break parties during this round.

WHERE TO MEET YOUR GAMMA CHI

You will meet your GXs virtually before rounds begin with a group of about 20-30 other PNMs. More information about GX groups will be shared in the days leading up to Recruitment Kickoff and GX will communicate with you frequently as Recruitment nears!

PNMs will be required to meet with GXs about an hour before parties begin for each round. This will be a space to ask questions, connect with other PNMs and your GXs, and relax before the round begins.

CONVERSATION

Conversation will be very casual and just slightly more than small talk. Some sororities will have you meet 3-4 members or more and in other chapters you may meet only one member. Be prepared to share where you are from, where you are living on or near campus, what year you are, what you are or hope to be involved in on campus, what your interests outside of academics are, and what your intended major is. As this is values-based recruitment you may also be asked to share about what you are looking for in a sorority and what common values you may share with the organizations.

After this round of parties you will have the opportunity to prioritize (aka submit your preferences about) which chapters you would like to return to in the next round. You may only prioritize chapters that you visited during this round.

Even though you will attend Phi Beta Chi during round 1 you cannot include the chapter in your officially submitted preferences as they will not be participating in any more rounds of Primary Recruitment. Talk to your GX if you know after Round 1 that Phi Beta Chi may be the best fit for you. Each PNM will receive invitations from up to 8 chapters in the next round. Remember, this is a mutual selection process. While there is a chance you are disappointed by not receiving an invitation from a specific chapter, it is an honor to receive invitations back to any chapter! You should focus on the chapters that have invited you back for the following rounds as they want to continue to get to know you and think you may be a fit for their organization.

Similar to round 1 you will virtually meet your GX and PNM group about an hour before rounds start. Your GX will share your party schedule including which chapters you were invited back to with you privately at this meeting.

CONVERSATION

The conversation during this round will feel more relaxed than it did in Round 1.

You will have a better chance to get to know between 2 and 5 more members of each chapter you are invited back to. Be prepared to talk about the chapter’s philanthropy events and potentially what the chapter philanthropy means to sisters. Some sisters may share what Panhellenic service and philanthropy events they enjoy most. You can expect to share about any service or philanthropic experiences you have or hope to have in your collegiate years!

During round 2 each chapter will discuss finances of membership in their organization with all PNMs. If you have questions regarding this conversation chapter members, GXs, and PRT can answer further questions.

WHAT FOLLOWS

After round 2 you will have the opportunity to prioritize which chapters you would like to return to in the next round. You may only prioritize chapters that you visited during this round.

Each PNM can receive invitations from up to 5 chapters. Some PNMs will receive 5 invitations while others may only receive 1 or 2 invitations. The same principle is applied to Round 2 as in Round 1. Be optimistic and excited about the sororities that have invited you back.

WHERE TO MEET YOUR GAMMA CHI

Round 3 is the first in person round! Your Gamma Chis will communicate with you likely at the end of Round 2 about an on campus location to meet at about an hour before Round 3 parties begin. GXs will also help to provide directions to any on campus locations as this may be one of your first times navigating campus.

CONVERSATION

The conversation during this round should give you a great idea about what membership in each chapter could look like and what sisterhood events they do. The conversation will be fun, but also more serious than previous rounds as it is educational. Chapters will give a tour of their chapter facilities and you may meet one or more members at each chapter you are invited to. Be prepared to learn about what it’s like to live in the chapter house.

Immediately following submission of preferences with the same guidelines as in virtual rounds, any first years will be required to go to Convocation. If you are not walking there with your residence hall floor and or Resident Assistant (RA) you will be required to walk with your GX and PNM group. Failure to attend Convocation without valid excuse from PRT will result in removal from the Primary Recruitment process.

You will have the opportunity to prioritize the chapters and can receive up to 2 invitations for Preference Round (Round 4). Continued excitement for the chapters that have invited you back will help you ensure that you have the best chances possible to receive a bid on Bid Day.

During Round 3, PNMs are required to wear the Panhellenic t-shirt provided. This year there are 3 options (shown at left) which will be distributed evenly by your GX or a member of PRT. When registering for recruitment you will have the option to select your preference for t-shirt design and size, but you are not guaranteed your first choice.

As this round is the first in person round and Carolina summers are VERY hot and humid you should dress comfortably! We recommend dressy casual shorts or skirt with shoes that you are comfortable walking in (NO HEELS). You may have to walk a couple of miles between chapter facilities.

You will likely meet your GX group at the same on campus location that you met them for Round 3. Your GXs will communicate with you about this location as recruitment nears.

CONVERSATION

This conversation will be the most serious. The goal of this round is to learn why membership in each sorority means so much to the members. You should get a sense of whether or not you can see yourself as a member of the chapter. Do your values align with those of the members and the organization as a whole? In most chapters you will have a long conversation with only 1 or 2 chapter members who are excited to really get to know you. This round can be emotional, so be mindful of sorority members’ heartfelt poems, readings, or songs. You should have been thinking deeply about sorority membership over the past few rounds - be ready to listen to the sorority members, but you can also ask questions or share your own experiences in conversation if you wish.

WHAT FOLLOWS

After this round of parties you will prioritize the sororities you attended for the last time. During selections after Round 4 you will sign a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA). More information about selections and the commitment associated with signing the MRABA will be shared at the completion of parties. You will have the choice to prioritize any or all of the sororities you attended during Round 4 on your MRABA. Ranking all chapters you attended during the Preference round will maximize your chances of receiving a bid from at least 1 chapter. If you receive a bid from a chapter, but choose not to accept it you will not be able to participate in Panhellenic Recruitment until the next Fall. So, while UNC Panhellenic encourages you to maximize your chances of receiving a bid, if you know you cannot see yourself in that sorority you should not include it in your preference night ranking.

Furthermore, if you have no intention of being initiated into that sorority because of finances or any other reason do not list them in your preference ranking because you may be limiting another PNM who does have hopes of receiving a bid from the sorority and being initiated.

After leaving your last Preference parties there is a strict silence period.

Until you have received a bid, or been notified you have been released, there should be no contact between any PNM and any active or alumni chapter members. The only Panhellenic chapter members you are permitted to talk to between leaving your last Preference party and opening a bid is any GX, PJB, or member of PRT.

GOALS On Bid Day you will finally get to open Bid Cards alongside other PNMs in your GX group! This is the time when you will find out what organization you are invited to become a member of. After opening cards, you will meet your new sisters and attend a Bid Day celebration at the chapter facility!

WHERE TO MEET GAMMA CHI Gamma Chis will be in communication with you throughout recruitment

about what to expect on Bid Day. You will meet your GX with other members of your PNM group at a location on campus that may be different from previous meeting spots. This location is where you will wait with other PNMs to open your bid cards, but before that you will watch the Gamma Chi reveal where you will finally find out what organizations your GXs are members of!

We hope that even after primary recruitment your GXs are still Panhellenic women you feel comfortable talking with whether they are in your organization or another one.

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT On Bid Day you are now New Members of your organization. Another active

member of the organization will lead you and other new members through programming and education as part of the Panhellenic New Member Education process. If you have any questions about the New Member process, your GX, any member of Panhellenic organizations, or any member of PRT can answer questions you have. The most important thing to expect after opening bids is that Bid Day is a very exciting day for all Panhellenic women!! Enjoy the day and enjoy the exciting opportunities and friendships that Panhellenic membership will surely bring!

Even though you attended Preference Round at one or more chapters or listed sororities on your preference card, it is possible you may not be matched with a chapter due to: 1. Not maximizing your preferences 2. Withdrawing from the Primary Recruitment process before signing a preference card

Following distribution of bids, you may still have the opportunity to participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB) if the sororities decide to participate given they have additional bids to give. COB can occur in both fall and spring semesters. Spring Recruitment is an informal process in which you attend open/unstructured events hosted by participating sororities. If after Primary Recruitment you are interested in learning more about COB please contact uncpanhelrecruitment@gmail.com.

We highly encourage that you continue to seek involvement in other areas of UNC. More information about student organizations can be found at heellife.unc.edu.

At the end of every round, PNMs will prioritize the sororities whose events they have attended, in preferential order. At the same time, the sororities are submitting their selection of PNMs to invite back in preferential order. Each PNM's preferences and sorority's selections are processed to generate invitations to the next round. An hour before the events begin for the next round, PNMs will receive their schedule of events for that day. A PNM will not know which sororities have invited her back until receiving a schedule.

For example, after the end of Round 1, PNMs will make selections. The PNMs will have visited all 11 sororities this round, but can only preference the 10 NPC organizations. The maximum number of sororities a PNM can attend during Round 2 is 8. Therefore, a PNM will 'preference' the 8 she would "LIKE" to return to as #1 and rank the remaining 2 in preferential order (2 and 3). This does NOT guarantee that a PNM will receive invitations to her top 8. This simply allows the NPC Recruitment Specialist to guide sororities on the number of Potential New Members they may invite. The purpose of this is to create a culture of equality for invitations among sororities. This process will continue for Rounds 2 and 3. PNMs may only prioritize, they may not 'delete' any sororities from their schedules or choose to not rank a sorority to guarantee she will not return.

A PNM may only prioritize sororities that she has attended that round and prioritize up to the maximum number that a PNM can visit the next round. The maximum amount for Round 2 is 8. Round 3 is 5, and Round 4 is 2. In some cases, PNMs may not have attended the maximum amount, therefore, they will only make selections from the number of sororities that they visited in the previous round. They will then prioritize the remaining options to the maximum number of parties allowed for the next round. GXs and PRT will be able to help you with this process!

EXPECTATIONS FOR GAMMA CHIS

GXs are not allowed to promote any sorority over another.

GXs should not reveal their own sorority affiliation to any PNMs so please do not ask them or try to guess. They are not allowed to facilitate or allow any games or debates about what chapters PNMs believe they are a member of.

GXs will follow a Code of Ethics and do the best possible job to aid PNMs in experiencing a positive Primary Recruitment Process.

EXPECTATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS

A PNM must be a regularly matriculated (degree-pursuing), full-time UNCChapel Hill student to be eligible to participate in any UNC Panhellenic recruitment processes. Visiting or conditionally admitted students cannot be extended a bid by any of the NPC organizations.

Any full-time UNC students who are participating in Carolina Away are eligible for recruitment. Any full-time students studying abroad should also be eligible, but if you are concerned about your specific eligibility you can contact uncpanhelrecruitment@gmail.com.

Carolina Global Launch students are not full-time UNC students and are eligible for Panhellenic Recruitment upon their return to campus.

A PNM may not have been ever initiated into an NPC organization. If you previously participated in Recruitment, signed an MRABA, but did not get initiated into a chapter, you are eligible for Primary Recruitment. If you are in doubt please contact the VP Recruitment, Caitlyn.

From August 6, 2021 through the extension of bids, no PNM shall visit a sorority chapter facilities except for the approved recruitment events Rounds 1-4.

All PNMs must attend all meetings with GXs, Kickoff, and the maximum number of parties they are invited to. Failure to do so, without an approved absence from PRT, will result in the removal of the PNM from the recruitment process. In the event of illness, emergency, or University scheduled activities (athletics practice, move-in, etc) the PNM shall notify PRT and/or their GX. PRT and GXs will work together to notify any chapters involved. If you are aware of any conflicts that you have before the recruitment process begins, please submit this information in writing via email as soon as possible to the Panhellenic Council at uncpanhelrecruitment@gmail.com. If conflicts arise during the week, your GX will provide the information you will need.

Additionally, all PNMs that are first-years must attend convocation at the time the University designates (expected to take place on Sunday, August 15 in the evening after Round 3 parties).

In order to participate in Primary Recruitment, PNMs must pay the registration fee of $75 or be approved for a PNM Scholarship which will reduce or waive the fee. Payment must be received by August 8, 2021 at 11:55PM. No applications will be accepted after August 8, 2021 at 11:55PM. The recruitment fee is Non-Refundable. More information about these can be found on Page 38.

PNMS are expected to...

Be on time for all meetings, events, and parties associated with recruitment.

Wear their Panhellenic name tag during in-person recruitment events and have their preferred name accurately displayed on Zoom during virtual recruitment events.

Provide their own transportation to and from all events. All chapter facilities are within walking distance of UNC campus and a majority of frequent student housing locations near campus.

Remain in designated areas for PNMs during and between recruitment rounds. Our chapters ask that you do not walk behind their houses, and you should never be left alone during a round, but in the case you are please do not wander inside of chapter facilities.

Park in locations designated as open parking. There should be designated parking around campus at locations like the Morehead Planetarium, The Carolina Inn, and in certain parking lots/ decks on Franklin and Rosemary Streets. You should not plan to park at any residence halls, at chapter facilities, or on the streets on campus as move-in parking policies will be in effect at many locations. The UNC Transportation and Parking (move.unc.edu) website can provide more details about parking during the week as the Fall Semester nears.

Honor all invitations to recruitment functions. The only exception is for in extenuating circumstances and with the approval from PRT. Maximize their options by prioritizing all chapters after attending the parties for the round, with the only exception being in the final selection round on the MRABA following Preference (Round 4).

Prioritize chapters immediately after the last party attended in each round.

Once preferences have been submitted, no changes may be made.

Adhere to the Strict Silence Period between PNMs, family members (mothers/ sisters), and active sorority members from the time she leaves the last house on Preference Round until bids have been extended by Panhellenic. PNMs may still contact their GX or PRT at any time during this strict silence period.

Consult their GX and/or PRT before withdrawing from recruitment. In the event, a PNM wishes to withdraw, they must complete the official withdrawal form. The PNMs GX and/or PRT may ask you to share about why they want to remove themselves from the recruitment process, but it is not required to share details.

Have no contact outside of designated recruitment rounds with any active members beginning on August 6, 2021 until the distribution of bids on August 17, 2021 at 2:00 PM. Any contact that does occur with active members should be in an educational context only to answer any questions about Panhellenic and promote UNC Panhellenic as a whole.

PNMs should not accept any gifts from any active members at any point. If you, a PNM, have a roommate, housemate, sibling, or close friend that is an active member of a Panhellenic or associate chapter at UNC that you are concerned about communicating with during this period the active member has most likely already been in contact with PRT and there is nothing you need to do.

If for any reason you feel that you have witnessed a recruitment rule violation, it is highly encouraged and respected if you file a violation form with Panhellenic. You can do this anonymously if you feel it is necessary. By doing this, you are helping UNC Panhellenic and the Fraternity and Sorority community at UNC to promote fair, ethical behavior. Recruitment violations will, unfortunately, occur and we appreciate your concern to help prevent them. We ask that you do your best to get specific details, names, exact wording, and setting if you suspect a violation. You should not tell everyone about this situation - only those necessary that could help you to solve the problem or prevent future occurrence.

Your GX, PRT, or any OFSL staff member are great private resources to talk to and gain access to the violation form. Otherwise, please email fsl@email.unc.edu or call (919)962-8298 with more details regarding the incident if you are not comfortable providing your name to anyone.

The registration link will go live on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 and will close on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at 11:55 PM. All payments must be received and PNM accounts must be finalized by the time registration closes. The cost to register for recruitment is $75 and is NONREFUNDABLE. There is no financial benefit to registering earlier, but the earlier you register the earlier you may be connected with a Gamma Chi to help answer any and all of your recruitment and UNC related questions.

After registering for recruitment you will receive a confirmation email with more instructions about how to submit an optional PNM INTRODUCTION VIDEO. Some details and a sample video can also be found at the bottom of the Recruitment Registration tab on our website.

This year the Panhellenic Executive Board will be providing a PNM Scholarship on a case-by-case NEEDS basis. There will be two options for the scholarship. Option 1 is a fee waiver where you would pay $0 of the registration fee. Option 2 is a reduced fee where you would pay $25 of the registration fee. There are limited funds available, and they will be considered on a rolling basis. The application will close Sunday, August 8th at 11:55 PM. FINANCES: WHAT IF I DON’T THINK I CAN AFFORD A SORORITY?

That is definitely something to consider. Many sororities offer payment plans for dues. Although some sororitIes offer scholarships, not all of them do. Even if your sorority does offer them, they may only be partial scholarships and available to a limited number of people. Please think about your individual situatIon. SororitIes, however, offer some of the cheapest meal plans and housing situations at UNC! GRADES: WILL MY GRADES SUFFER?

No. The average GPA of women in Panhellenic sororities is a 3.569. Many sororities have incentives for getting good grades and encourage their members to do well in classes. Many chapters have study rooms, offer study hours with incentives, and have rewards and prizes for doing well academically.

LEGACY: WHAT IF I’M A LEGACY?

You’re not guaranteed a bid from a sorority even if you’re a legacy. Each sorority handles legacy status differently, so don’t rely on just the fact that you are a legacy to get you through a round. Letters are no longer required by NPC. DROPPING: WHAT IF I WANT TO DROP OUT OF RECRUITMENT?

Your Gamma Chis and I will respect your decision. This is your journey and what you make of it. You might change your mind, but recruitment is a great time to get to meet a new group of women, hear about UNC in general, see what other people are involved in on campus, and so much more. We would encourage you to think through any thing that is making you doubt the process before officially dropping.

OUTFITS: WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? WHAT ELSE SHOULD I BRING?

You should express your style, but be comfortable and wear appropriate clothing.

With the exception of Round 3 when chapters and PNMs will be wearing t-shirts, each chapter will get progressively dressier as the rounds go on, so you may want to parallel that, as well. See the "Round X What to Wear" pages (21, 23, 25, 27) for more detail.

MISSING A ROUND: WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE TO MISS A ROUND?

There’s no opportunity to make-up for the houses that you miss. We will tell chapters you will be missing the round, however, each sorority handles it differently. They are not required to invite you back to the next round. There will be no classes during the time of recruitment, but please communicate with Panhellenic Recruitment Team and your Gamma Chi (when you find out who they are) about any conflict you may have. We encourage you to communicate with your employers well in advance in order to request off the dates for recruitment rounds and bid day (August 13-18).

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: ARE THEY REQUIRED?

Each sorority has a different recommendation policy. They are not required for you to go into recruitment. Please see the chapter’s websites for specific policies regarding letters of recommendation.

NO PRIOR GREEK FAMILY MEMBERS: AM I AT A DISADVANTAGE?

No. Every PNM has a fair chance during recruitment.

HOUSING: AM I ALLOWED TO LIVE IN A CHAPTER HOUSE THIS YEAR?

First year students are not allowed to live in chapter houses. If you are not a first year student, you should not expect to be able to live in a chapter house in your first year of membership. House availability is limited. You can consider asking about living in chapter houses during Round 3.

Located right on Campus, next to TOPO, this art museum has wonderful exhibits that are engaging and educational. It houses both a permanent exhibition and cycles through traveling exhibits.

Walk or have a picnic in the Arboretum!

Located at the intersection of Raleigh and Cameron Street, the Coker Arboretum is a 5.3 acre area full of countless species of plants.

There are plenty of benches, as well as open areas to sit and relax. Or, walk around the paths and admire the scenery.

Football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and baseball games are all fun to go to.

Head to the Forest Theatre on Halloween Night to watch a performance, or any day for a nice outdoor walk or short hike!

FOOD Linda’s Bar and Grill

Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner! They also host Trivia Nights.

Carolina Coffee Shop

Open for almost a century, this locally owned restaurant is another favorite. Stop in for a meal or at their coffee window to get a quick pick-meup.

Time-Out

Open 24 hours! Time-Out is famous for their chicken and cheddar biscuit and has been featured on many food shows over the years.

Top of the Hill

Located on the roof on the corner of Franklin and S. Columbia, TOPO is a favorite. The view is great and the food is better.

Sutton’s

Originally opened in 1923, Sutton’s began as a Drug Store and has transitioned into a diner that is beloved to anyone who knows it. Everything on the menu is amazing and the walls are full of UNC memorabilia and photos of patrons from over the years.

The Yogurt Pump (Yopo)

A family owned business, Yopo became the first frozen yogurt shop in the state of North Carolina in 1982. They have staple flavors and weekly flavors as well, They even take flavor requests on their website.

Epilogue

Epilogue is a locally owned coffee shop and bookstore right on Franklin Street. They serve a unique variety of coffee drinks and pastries, as well as many interesting books for sale. Epilogue also holds events, such as book clubs and artists.
