What type of person do you want to have to lead a large group of people? What type of leader is best to be appointed as president for a college campus? Maybe you want who goes out of their way to make everyone happy. These are the types of questions besearch continues. President Kay Norton announced that she will be retiring at the end of June in 2018. Norton made this announcement at her annual State of the University Address in Sepyears. The Board of Trustees and Student Senate are a few of the groups that are continuing to plan the presidential search. Both the Board
and Senate have started to create lists of the leadership characteristics they hope to see in the new president. According to Student Trustee Michael hosted several listening sessions and interacwhich resulted in a dialogue that included eral characteristics that they felt were not adequately covered and should be considered further. “Students have repeatedly stressed the importance of visibility in our next President. Many students expressed disappointment in a lack of opportunities for collaboration and engagement with Kay. Students believe a characteristic that more explicitly addresses commitment of the next President to be more physically present on campus and in student’s lives should be included. A history of UNC’s presidents
Since its founding in 1889, The University of Northern Colorado has seen a number of presidents at the helm. Now with the search for Kay Norton’s successor underway, The Mirror reflects on the long history of one UNC’s highest office.
Any student currently at UNC has only ever known one president of the university: Kay Norton. But that’s set to change. her plan to retire. Opinion: On the search for UNC’s next president, we need to hear all voices.

The University of Northern Colorado womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball team was picked to finish atop the Big Sky in both the media and coaches polls after finishing 14-4 in conference play, 22-8 overall last season. The reason? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not so hard to find. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It puts a tremendous amount of pressure on our plate,â&#x20AC;? coach Kamie Ethridge said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But we have been putting in countless hours of hard work to back it up.â&#x20AC;? On the surface, the Bears are ranked where they are because they are really good â&#x20AC;&#x201D; returning their top three scorers and bringing back 84.2 percent of their playing time from last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team. That was a team that won 11-straight games last year and was on the verge of cracking the NCAA top-25 rankings. And though they stumbled down the stretch, it was the most successful season the Northern Colorado women have had in recent history. Digging a little deeper, Ethridge has put together a well-oiled machine that looked unselfish to a flaw at points last season. And it all starts with the guard duo of junior Savannah Smith and senior Savannah Scott. Smith averaged 15.9 points on 34.3 percent from beyond the arc and added 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season to warrant First Team All-Big Sky honors. Her 80 three-pointers made also set a UNC single-season record. Scott tallied 14 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 45 percent from downtown to find a spot on the All-Big
Senior goalkeeper Madeline Burdick has had a great season in goal for the Bears, averaging under 0.75 goals allowed per game and recording 10 shutouts in just 21 games. Sky second team. Ethridge praised what both of them are able to do on the court, and added that Scott shows the most hustle of any player sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever coached. And in a coaching career that spans 30 years and includes stops at the University of Texas, Vanderbilt and Kansas State, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s saying something. To anchor the paint, the Bears have last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading rebounder, junior center Courtney Smith. She averaged 14 points on 60.1 percent from the field, while pulling down 5.9 boards per game. On the other end of the floor, UNC also returns its best defender, senior Kianna Williams. Williams averaged just under
six points, while pulling down 4.7 rebounds and nabbing 2.1 steals last season. The last returning starter for the Bears is sophomore Krystal Leger-Walker. She started all 30 games her true freshman season and led the team in assists, dishing out just under four per game. Off the bench, the Bears return sophomore Abby Kain, junior Kirsten Kramer and sophomore Bridget Hintz who all averaged over six minutes per game last season. And at the helm is Etheridge, who has a 57-37 record in her three years in Greeley after inheriting a team that finished 14-15 the year before her arrival. The deeper someone looks into
this UNC team, the more reasons theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find to like it. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also find that the team is more than up to the challenge of playing with a bullseye on its back. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a long way to go until March to back up the expectations put on us, but we are excited to face the challenge,â&#x20AC;? Ethridge said. The Bears used a strong second half to pull away from CSU-Pueblo in their 68-51 exhibition win. Scott led that charge with 23 points and five rebounds. Savannah Smith added 11 points and five assists. Northern Colorado opens its regular season on Nov. 10 when they head to Chicago to take on DePaul.

With returning juniors Jacob Knipp at quarterback and Trae riek at running back, murmurs of competing for a Big Sky Championship were hear around campus. And things got off to a good start with an easy 41-14 win over College of Idaho in the season-opener at Nottingham. riek rushed for 71 yards and three touchdowns and Knipp added 238 yards through the air, and the offense was off and running. After a week-two matchup against the University of Florida in Gainesville was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma, the Bears carried the momentum from week one into a game at Folsom Field against the University of Colorado.
UNC dropped that game 41-21, but showed glimpses of being really good, especially on the offensive end. It was Knippâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn to find the end zone, connecting with Alex Wesley five times for 102 yards and two touchdowns, and adding another to tight end Michael McCauley. Coach Earnest Collins Jr. said his team did a lot of growing up, scoring 21 points on a CU team that had allowed only a field goal through its first two games. The Bears kept rolling into Big Sky play, winning a thriller 43-42 over Idaho State on a last-second field goal. The offense kept rolling, with Knipp throwing for 413 yards and four touchdowns and riek added 142 yards on the ground.

Knipp went down midway through UNCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next game at North Dakota, and the offense hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been the same since. Knipp reinjured his non-throwing shoulder that knocked him out in the second game last season and allowed now-Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter to step in. Backup quarterback Conor regan has stepped up nicely, but there is a reason Knipp has been the starter since his freshman year and twice beat out Sloter for the starting job. The Bears have had to rely more on the run game, and it has revealed how young their offensive line is. The defensive struggles have only added to the teams struggles as a whole. Since the opener, the defensive unit has given up over 40 points per game, and it has made the offense try to dig out of a number of holes early on. Sitting at 2-6 and 1-5 in Big Sky Play with only two games left, this season may be a disappointment, but it is not lost. The Bears gained a lot of experience, especially players who would not have normally found the field. That, teamed with Knipp returning from injury and riek returning for his senior year, all eyes are set on 2018.
