"Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." - Malcolm X College/University? The ultimate goals for students in UTOP is to complete the program with a 4.0 GPA, become comfortable with campus and knowledgeable of all of the resources and opportunities available to them as UNC Charlotte students. It is my hope that after students complete the program, they are motivated to become leaders on campus. There aren't many places on campus that you won't find a UTOP student. UTOP students are in student government, Student Alumni Ambassadors, orientation counselors, SAFE counselors UTOP mentors and student coordinators, Bonner Leaders, student organization leaders, and so much more! That exposure will set the stage for students' understanding of themselves in relation to the rest of the world and provide a foundation for them to discover their purpose.

Halfway There What is something you would change so far? I would have the mentees communicate with each other more. Has adjusting to college life been easy? It’s been easy, but the work is different. What is your favorite memory so far? My favorite memory was going to downtown Charlotte on the Fourth of July. Who is someone you misjudged in the beginning and how are they different now that you know them? I misjudged Kaleigha, she was nicer than I thought.

Daysean What is something you would change so far? I would like better communication. Has adjusting to college life been easy? Adjusting to college life has not been easy. But, once you get used to it you’re used to it. What is your favorite memory so far? My favorite memory is the fireworks on the Fourth of July. Who is someone you misjudged in the beginning and how are they different now that you know them? I didn’t really misjudge anyone.

Jonathan What is something you would change so far? I would give the mentees more time to explore the campus to get a true college experience. Has adjusting to college life been easy? Not entirely because I am used to having my mother by my side helping me. However, I am learning valuable lessons to help me become a successful young man. What is your favorite memory so far? The talent show because it gave me the chance to see everyone else’s talents which inspired me. It also allowed me to see them in a different light. Who is someone you misjudged in the beginning, and how are they different now that you know them? Truthfully, my roommate Joshua. At first I thought he was going to be quiet, awkward and shy, but as I began to talk to him and see him interact with the fellow mentees, I started to realize he was actually a pretty cool person.

Jada What is something you would change so far? Personally, I find no problem with the program itself. I find the program to be quite beneficial towards me adjusting to the college lifestyle. Has adjusting to college life been easy? For me it was an easy transition because I grew up as the oldest child among my siblings, which it turn gave me ability to learn how to take care of myself and others. What is your favorite memory so far? I can’t exactly pick one specific moment during the program to title my favorite, but I would have to say I cherished the moments we are all together. Just hanging out in each others rooms cracking jokes, telling stories, just enjoying each others company. Who is someone you misjudged in the beginning, and how are they different now that you know them? Honestly, I misjudged Morgan. At first I thought she was going to be a tad judgemental. Come to find out she is one of the sweetest people I have ever met.

Bonding 101 M’Kalah What was your small group’s name? CHAINLYNX Who were your mentors? Deja Stover and Lantzen Lowe What was your favorite group activity? Why? The Letter to Myself Activity, because for me it was a constructive way for me to internalize my goals and see if I achieved them by the end of the UTOP Program. What was your favorite memory while at UTOP? Why? I would have to say the Encore Activity was my personal favorite because it was an excellent ice breaker to start off the program, and as they say “Music is the universal language of mankind”.

Brandon What was your small group’s name? Lil Migos Who were your mentors? Amani & Satoria What was your favorite group activity? When we went to the boardwalk because it was a chance for me to explore the city of Charlotte. What was your favorite memory while at UTOP? There has been so many great memories so far, but my favorite would have to be the night we made the Cypher Video. It was a time in which all of the mentees came together on their own accord, not because it was on the schedule.

Nyjah What was your small groups name? DNT Who were your mentors? Darnel & Talia What was your favorite group activity? My favorite activity so far was the Six H’s activity because it gave me the opportunity open up to my fellow group members. What was your favorite memory while at UTOP? The optional weekend was my favorite so far because it gave me the chance to connect with various mentors and mentees.

Veronique What was your small groups name? DNT Who were your mentors? Darnel & Talia What was your favorite group activity? My favorite group activity so far was the Ramen Cook Off. It was balling on a budget! What was your favorite memory while at UTOP? My favorite memory would have to be when my small group played against XXL in a manhunt because it gave us the opportunity for us to work together. Plus it was funny to see us find each other.

Hidden Talents

Jaylen Davis What is your hidden talent?

Jada Flowers What is your hidden talent?

“My hidden talent is yo-yoing. I began yo-yoing when I was 8 and continued to until I was 14. I stopped for a few years before recently picking it back up.”

“My hidden talent is that I am double-jointed. I discovered my talent in elementary school when I realized that not everyone could do it.”

Ethan Tanner What is your hidden talent?

Aaliyah Arrington What is your hidden talent?

“My hidden talent is my ability to do voice impressions. I have always been able to do impressions. I impersonated my teachers and then went on to do people on TV, like Arnold and President Obama.”

“My hidden talent is clogging. I began clogging in the fifth grade and I have been doing it ever since.”

Brittney Wilson What is your hidden talent?

Talia Crowther What is your hidden talent?

“My hidden talent is my toe flexibility. I realized that I could bend my toe in crazy ways at the beginning of UTOP.”

“My hidden talent is painting. I didn’t really start until I was in high school. I do it to relieve stress.”

Joshua Lowry What is your hidden talent?

“My hidden talent is flexibility. When I was six years old, I was stretching in gym class when the teacher started talking about the importance of stretching and how some people can even put their feet behind their head. Being the curious child that I was, I did it. Let’s just say that the teacher was utterly shocked.”

Each year the UTOP mentees participate in a talent show. Students work together to organize, rehearse, and perfect their acts. This section consists of the hard work put in before the show; Crunch Time. Then the final results; Showtime.

Fourth of July “The lines were long” -Brandon Yarborough

“The fireworks were magical!” -Nick Hawkins

UTOP celebrated the Fourth of July by riding the light rail uptown to an annual festival. While walking to the festival, we saw new sights of uptown Charlotte. At the festival there were delicious food trucks, concerts, and beautiful fireworks that began at 9:30pm. This trip was full of fun and meeting new

“I really enjoyed connecting with people and learning everyone’s names. The colorful waterfall was really pretty.” - Kiya Ross

Kate’s Skating Roller Rink “Lowkey felt like I was in Roll Bounce.” -Lantzen Lowe

“I really fell for skating, literally”

The time we spent at Kate’s Roller Skating Rink was amazing. All the mentees and mentors got to sit and talk while enjoying pizza, hotdogs, and soda. We got to skate, play games, and enjoy the company of one another. All of us enjoyed a good laugh as we watched or taught some of our peers and mentors to skate. This trip was so much fun, and allowed all of the UTOPers to grow closer with one another.

“The skating rink was a fun time full of laughter and a whole lot of falling. I never enjoyed going to the rink just as much as I did with my UTOP family!” -Elliott Venson

“The

best part apart Carowinds of me was when Kamryn, Amani, and I went on the RipCord. It was a freefall and the drop was higher than the Intimidator” -Morgan Parker

Carowinds is the largest amusement park in North Carolina. As our last trip it was definitely the most memorable. There was food, fun, and thrills for all to enjoy. It was an amazing experience that all of the mentees and mentors got to enjoy together. Some of our fellow mentees tried some things they have never tried before and will probably never try again. We got one final trip to enjoy each other’s company and bond with one another before the end of UTOP.
