Responsibilities of a Director
The Arts and Sciences Foundation, Inc.
The mission of the Arts & Sciences Foundation is to enhance the College by meeting the needs of the various academic departments, promoting teaching, research and service, and supporting the continuing development of knowledge and learning.
Since the founding of the Arts and Sciences Foundation in 1975, its directors have served the College of Arts and Sciences through their counsel, advocacy and philanthropy. The College gratefully acknowledges the vital role of the Foundation in its development efforts and clearly states its expectations of directors.
• Directors of the Arts and Sciences Foundation, who are elected for three-year terms, serve as advisors to the Dean of the College in accordance with Foundation by-laws, the Foundation mission statement and annual operating plans.
• Directors serve as fiduciaries of the Foundation with responsibility for reviewing and approving Foundation operations.
• Directors have an enthusiastic and faithful commitment to the College of Arts and Sciences and its central role in the University.
• Directors are expected to make the College of Arts and Sciences among their highest philanthropic priorities for personal support and to provide financial support according to their means.
• Directors are further expected to make annual unrestricted leadership gifts appropriate to the member’s ability to the Arts & Sciences Annual Fund.
• Directors actively assist the Dean and the Foundation staff with ongoing development efforts including comprehensive campaigns, special projects and annual giving.
• Directors attend two board meetings each year and participate actively in general board sessions as well as committee meetings. While these meetings will normally convene in Chapel Hill, they may also occur at off-campus locations.
• Directors serve the College as a whole, and not specific internal or external constituencies.
• Directors respect the confidentiality of information received as a member of the Arts and Sciences Foundation Board.

DEAN’S AWARD(S) FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL
The Dean’s Award(s) for Distinguished Service to the College of Arts and Sciences was established in 2010 by the Arts and Sciences Foundation to recognize volunteers who have served the College with distinction. The annual award(s) honors alumni and friends for their level of personal commitment, their leadership, and their dedication to the mission and goals of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Arts and Sciences Foundation Board of Directors selects recipients. The Nominating Committee forwards the names of nominees to the Board; the Board votes on the nominees at the annual spring meeting. The Award is typically presented to the recipient(s) at the subsequent fall board dinner. Current Directors and Foundation staff are excluded from consideration.
