Professional

Professional Mana Ikebe is an architectural designer practicing in New York. Originally from Tokyo, she attended Yale College, where she studied Architecture Theory and Design. After working for Peter Eisenman to complete Palladio Virtuel Book and Exhibition, she joined Guggenheim Museum as an exhibition designer, where she was responsible for the Italian Futurism show. She received her master’s in architecture from Columbia University in 2016 with Lucille Smyser Lowenfish Memorial Prize. Prior to joining KPF at 2016, she worked at Asymptote Architect /Living, where she utilized her computation skills. She also enjoys time with research and writing. She recently contributed to publications such as The Japanese Houses since 1945 (Thames & Hudson), and Volume 37: Is This Not a Pipe?

HUAMAO NORTH BUND / MASTERPLAN

Northbund Huamao Role; masterplan concept/retail villa designs Team; Josh Chaiken, Fredy Holzer, Mana Ikebe, Jianwei Shi Recently, the city has decided that the area will be built into a global central activity zone and an international commercial block, forming a golden triangle together with the Bund and Lujiazui.KPF envisioned North Bund Huamao center as a epicenter of North Bund. The site consists of a few Shikumen and Lilong housing, which is seen as fish-bone shaped blocks. When shikumen construction ended in 1949, Shanghai counted 9,000 alleyway complexes, housing up to four million people.

Throughout this project, we have developed a “lexicon” of Shanghainese architecture that fuses Western motifs--such as the JewishVienese influence on the Hongku district--with traditional Chinese artisanry as embodied in the Liong, yongchengli, and sikumen architecture. These lexicons became the foundation of our boutique design language.

All villas feature a gable-shaped roofscape to provide a consistency and unity in design.

Meanwhile, each villa features a diverse theme and materiality-terracotta, brick, and bronzeallowing them to have a dynamic dialogue.

At Huamao North Bund, a vibrant series of retail streets and urban plazas will connect the main transportation and surrounding historical neighbourhoods, attracting locals and tourists to discover this new and unique retail proposition in the city. The carefully sequenced series of outdoor spaces, integrating retail, leisure and food and beverage, will become an attraction in itself, making Huamao North Bund an important retail destination in Shanghai.

CULTURE+CRAFT+HERITAGE Shanghai’s narrative is made up of the interdependence between craft, heritage, and culture. Shikumen culture had a significant impact on Shanghai’s politics, economy, literature, arts, and way of life. The architecture afforded numerous options for artistic expression, leading to its serving as a backdrop to numerous films and musical compositions. North Bund Huamao’s adaptive revival of the site’s original shikumen brick shell reflects a more delicate recovery of underutilized cultural beauty native to the city.

FACADE CHARACTER ESTABLISH A GRADIENT BETWEEN HISTORIC AND CONTEMPORARY Looking at historical buildings on the site and adjacent sites, we identified particular motifs/features that have repeated over. Next, we developed the variance based on those features and developed prototyping models that address certain language of the facades. The historical facades and contemporary facades are not completely separate entities, rather a matrix that shares similar DNAs.

PRESERVED HISTORIC BUILDINGS PASSING DOWN MEMORIES OF SHANGHAI The Baroque-style Lilong Apartment and Perfume Factory were built in the early 19th century and are well preserved, providing an opportunity to appreciate the brick carvings decorated with eastern and western patterns as well as woodwork of traditional Chinese crafts.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Guangzhou Campus Role;Precinct leader in charge of design of administrative building and student center, masterplan concept-DD Team; Hana Kaseem, Mana Ikene, Jacob Cohen, Qi Shen Strategically positioned on the NorthSouth central canal axis, the formal entry to the HKUST campus and main entry point to the Central Research Hub creates a memorable first impression for visitors and a strong sense of place for students, researchers and faculty members on campus. It is designed to recall the main HKUST Clear Water Bay Campus, creating a unifying connection for the University as a whole. This Entry Gateway contains much of the same welcoming and impactful elements such as its circular form and the celebration of the emblematic firebird sculpture at its center. The circle is a form that fosters community and inclusivity. It is reinforced here through a central water basin surrounded by shaded amphitheater seating and highlighted by colorful blooming trees in arcs inscribed around it.

As at the CWB campus, it is anchored at its epicenter by the iconic firebird sculpture.

Beyond the circular drop-off, the Entry plaza, as a ‘gateway to innovation’, frames the whole Research Hub and creates an identifiable outdoor room for gathering and communal events. It is an important landmark on campus and connects through escalators to the second floor concourse, as it completes the loop via a bridge that unites the Research Hub’s two – 106 –

Administrative Building - Arrival Court

This is a building of prime importance and shapes the arrival experience most. As such, it portrays the ethos of HKUST and embodies the spirit of innovation. The building does so in many ways including the use of asymmetrical form to reflect a dynamic movement forward, the breaking down of scale through stepped levels to portray accessibility to all, the use of openings and porosity of the façade to convey openness and transparency, and finally the fostering of wellness through connection to Nature and landscaped terraces and roofs.

Program and Massing The gateway to the campus is anchored one on side by the visitor center and on the other by a branded cafe. Both benefit from a strategic position at the corners, facing simultaneously the iconic ‘firebird’ sundial and the center of the campus. While the main gateway forms the principal arrival for visitors, the arrival of students from the High Street residential precinct is through a landscaped courtyard alongside the student center - or alternatively using the the student center itself as an interior street to arrive at the Central Hub. Escalators bring one up seamlessly to the main concourse level, configured as a continuous loop that allows ease of connection between the east and west sides of the campus.

Facade Concept The concept for the facades of the Administration Building takes inspiration from the local bamboo shoot, symbolic of growth and development.

Here it is interpreted in an abstract manner that takes on the imprint of the bamboo’s curvature to create a textured and modern façade; fusing Eastern and Western aesthetics harmoniously.

The facade panels are tailored in three varying widths following a modular syncopated rhythm that allows for a randomized, less rigid reading.

Three facade options are generated which provide different interpretations of the concept presented. Pockets of outdoor planted balconies punctuate the ribbons of the facade, providing direct connection to Nature for the employees, which contributes to improved wellness and performance.

All three options meet the requirements for an efficient facade with the adequate ratio of solid to glass wall and shading devices to minimize direct solar radiation on the facade without sacrificing the design aesthetic.

In fact, the facade shading mechanism acts as a giant sundial, in a nod to the ‘firebird’ sculpture’s symbolic function at the entry court.

The horizontal and vertical louvers’ alignment is optimized relative to solar orientation.

Student Center Vision The Student Center is considered an important link between the Central Campus and the High Street residential precinct. It is also an integral part of the “Green Belt” necklace of buildings throughout the campus. This family of buildings is characterized by their green roofs with sinuous and fluid forms inspired by the rolling hills of the original Clear Water Bay Campus.

One of the two entrances to the Student Center anchors the plaza facing the High Street precinct in an embracing semi-circular gesture.

The building is designed with utmost flexibility in mind. During the SD phase, it was developed as a student center but in later assessment by the HKUST administration, it was determined that it may serve the campus more efficiently as a Students and Faculty Activities Center. As such, and given the flexibility of the interior layout, the building programming can adapt to a variety of uses without demanding major rethinking of its basic configuration, as evidenced by the program diagrams below.

Ground Floor Plan The ground floor of the Student Center is designed as an interior active street. The Student commons stretch its entire length connecting the East and West entries. Along this interior street, we have located one of the two student canteens which benefits from direct access to a seating garden just to its west. Also along the interior street are the flexible auditorium and the Student Services program.

Pivoting doors along the eastern facade of the Commons allow for a full connection to the adjacent Eastern courtyard, creating an indoor-outdoor environment for the students in good weather.

Role;Interior DD and TD design presentation and drawing sets Team; Marriane Kwok, John Winkler, Keith Jones, Xian Liu TP Link’s new headquarters in Shenzhen reimagines the traditional office environment to meet the needs of one of the world’s most influential technology companies. Promoting flexibility and activity, the building serves as an epicenter of the city’s growing global reputation for technology innovation and research.

Built on a repurposed site, the building’s side core design strategy allows for a full-height, 30-floor atrium. Organicallyshaped, curved floors extrude into the center and enliven the hub of the building balancing the rectilinear logic of the exterior. Perimeter columns line the angular façade and permit 600 square meters of column-free workspace, while radial variations of four balcony types are mirrored and rotated such that the layout varies from floor to floor. The system of balconies, connecting stairs, and walkways improve sightlines and daylighting within the atrium, augmenting both visual and physical connectivity among colleagues.

Wanting to combine the traditional “desk-oriented” office and more dynamic, collaborative areas, the atrium programming reinforces the company’s culture of collaboration, creativity, and innovation. A broad spectrum of workspaces inspire adaptation, incorporating flexible desks, tall tables, and informal collaboration areas. Water closets, “micro-kitchens,” glass enclosed conference rooms, and other public amenities encourage interaction within and between teams. Outside the structure, curvilinear green spaces reflect the interior’s animated forms, providing public space that underscores TP Link’s desire to reinvigorate and densify the neighborhood where the company was founded.

Design Essences -Harness Shenzhen’s Vitality, Creat Vibrant Eastern Urban Center -Create Iconic Space And Architecture -Synergy With Existing Context -Interior And Exterior Connectivity -Harmony Between Man And Nature The city relies on the Dongjiang River which is not protected well from pollution and none of the 10 main rivers in Shenzhen are considered suitable for agricultural, industrial, or domestic use due to pollution. In 2011 almost half of Shenzhen’s coastal waters were found to be seriously contaminated.

Local water collection and filtration methods, such as low-impact grey water and possibly black water recycling systems, rainwater catchment, efficient landscaping, water conservation measures, and individual building strategies (such as low flow fixtures), will reduce the need for potable water and minimize stormwater runoff to improve the water quality of the site.

“Vertical Pier,” borrows from the elegance and magnificence of New York City’s classic Gothic architecture, as well as the city’s modern buildings that are defined by a robust frame. The ribboned exterior of the tower is meant to draw the eye skyward, such as at the Woolworth Building, and this verticality continues past the structure to create a skyline presence. Vertical elements are composed of terra cotta, stone, or metal to give the façade depth.

This proposal is an investigation into invisible forces applied to a figure inserted into a generic box. The project focuses on articulating diverse ways that sectional figure are nested into a box. Our generation is increasingly producing architecture that overemphasizes the beauty of exterior, at the expense of interior quality. Therefore, our goal of the project is to revisit the idea of the interior through the use of sectional figure. The sectional figure is first embedded in the box. In the middle portion, the sectional figure is surrounded by the void space that rests in-between original volumes facing with each other, and at the final portion, the sectional figure becomes an autonomous being, detached from the original volume.

The proposal simultaneously explores a possibility of play between linear and curvilinear, the old strategy utilized by Baroque architects. At every moment, a linear element is answered by the curvilinear inner skin and sectional object, and this is something we had investigated with the concept model in the beginning.

ACADEMIC WORK

The program is a re-envisioning of the Broad Museum. An idiosyncratic inner figure houses circulation and public space, whereas the original box houses galleries, auditorium, and offices. To get to different galleries, a visitor will travel inside and outside of the sectional object that is punctured with apertures, allowing to perceive the movement of people throughout the gallery. Through the sectional object, one’s perception is activated through the use of oblique and a frontal surface that encourages the subjective unity of the whole space.

The louver skin emphasizes the idea of linear line by showing a very dense moment and more open moment, providing darker and lighter quality of the gallery space.

Curvature Analysis

It goes without saying that the architect’s tools are her most prized possessions.

They are akin to bodily prostheses: new augmentations that not only alter what can be done, but what can be represented and thus what can be conceptualized. It could even be said that the architect is indelibly influenced by the logic and agency of those tools.

This critical architect might ask: Where does the tool come from? What does the tool want to do? What new tools can be created? Should not every process of design be one that reinvents new methods of thinking, and new tools for creation? In other words: Architects should not only be able to use tools, but should have the ability to create new critical / experimental design tools.

My tool rationalizes the design process of turning complex geometry into contrastable building elements.

The tool utilizes multiple force points that you set to create the topography/surface Structure Pattern 1

METATOOL is a course about designing experimental design tools, utilizing the Grasshopper software environment as a meta-tool: a tool that enables the creation of other tools. The course is grounded in a solid technical understanding of Grasshopper and hovers around a set of critical history/theory texts and group discussions.

AIRPORT AS PURGATORY Fall 2015 Critic: Makus Dochansti Partner: Edward Yim Site: LGA

The focus of our studio project deals with three typologically polar programs: AIRPORT | PRISON | CAMPUS Programmatically, the three typologies starkly contrast each other.Airport is gateway. It is a point of entry and departure.

Its primary use is to let people in and out. It holds people awaiting their flight, from the time of their entry through the security until the time of their flight.Prison is quarantine.

It is a point of isolation and detention.Its primary use is to prohibit and restrict the movement of persons.It holds people serving their sentences, from the time of their incarceration until their terms are fully served. Campus is depository It is a point of accumulation and dispersion [of ideas and scholars].Its primary use is to store and redistribute ideas.

It holds goods from the time of production until they are disseminated and distributed. Yet functionally, the dissimilarities of these programs become merely that of users and duration.

Initial investigation of their linear progression of spaces & uses further reveal the similarities of these programs:entry, security, sorting, storing, purging.

Through our proposal, by coupling three distinct “typologies” of spaces - the airport, prison and campus and through explorations and exploitations of their similarities and differences, we seek to find potential for a new type of space and the resulting architecture.

SITE STUDY: LAGUARDIA AIRPORT The New York City airport system is the second largest in the world with over 115 million passengers a year. Of three New York airports, LaGuardia is located only four miles from Manhattan, serving 27 million passengers a year. While easily reached by bus or car, it still has no direct rail or subway link. The airport currently only handle domestic flights, so its facilities do not include border control or immigration processing. LGA in its current state has often been described as America’s worst airport. In comparison, global cities in Asia, the Middle East, and across the world still see the airport as a cultural ambassador welcoming each visitor with an abundance of cultural, social, and economic pride. The project aimed to define an unique mixed program, and to design an airport which will represent the spirit of a new global community. It will shape the way New York City functions locally, and globally.

Site Proposal This proposal would extend La Guardia’s east-west runway to 10,250’ and add a second 11,000’ east-west runway.

Because of the proximity to the Northeast Corridor in Port Morris, the Bronx, LaGuardia is the region’s most fruitful airport for expansion. An expanded LGA would offer a single seat ride to the airport for millions of commuters in the region by connecting it to Harlem 125th station. LaGuardia is located in Zone A, NYC’s highest risk flood zone cate" '-0

gorization. By expanding LGA into the Bronx and Rikers Island, we’re able to raise the grade of LGA (to avoid future flooding), while maintaining it as a functioning airport. We are able to do this by first creating an alternative airport infrastructure (terminals in the Bronx and gates/runways on Rikers) and then in phase two raising the grade of the existing LGA and expanding the new LGA there.
