900 students graduated from UNBC this year, making history as the University’s largest graduating class ever. Convocation ceremonies took place in Prince George, Quesnel, Fort St. John, Fort St. James,Terrace, Gitwinksihlkw, and Prince Rupert.

UNBC Scholars Awards

First-year students Kadagn Klepsch and Maigan Relkov, both of Williams Lake, have the chance to earn a UNBC degree tuition-free after receiving UNBC Scholars awards this past year.

As long as they maintain a B average, UNBC Scholars can have their tuition waived for an entire bachelor’s degree program.

What’s Happening at UNBC A New President Even before his first real day on the job, UNBC’s new president saw much of northern BC. George Iwama attended convocation ceremonies in various communities as part of a 3,200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor to the South Cariboo. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology. He will be officially installed as UNBC President on Friday, October 16th at 2pm at the Prince George campus. Alumni of the Year

Certificate in Mental Health and Addictions Now Offered in Quesnel In 2010, UNBC will be offering a certificate in Mental Health and Addictions at the North Cariboo Community Campus. Mental health and addictions are an increased burden on society and on the health care system within BC. This program is geared toward individuals working in the field of mental health and addictions, who may or may not have training in the field of Nursing, Social Work or Psychology. The program will provide them with the basic skills and resources required to become more effective within this field.

The University of Northern British Columbia’s Quesnel River Research Centre is being re-named in honour of the man who helped secure the station near Likely, BC. Dr. Max Blouw was UNBC’s first Vice President of Research and a champion of connecting the needs of communities, industry, and government to research and development. Dr. Blouw was in attendance at the unveiling of the Dr. Max Blouw Quesnel River Research Centre along with UNBC president George Iwama.

UNBC’s New Alumni of the Year Annika Klopp is also a newly minted member of the Northern Medical Program. Klopp, who grew up in Williams Lake, is interested in pursuing a career in family medicine or pediatrics and intends to practice in a rural area.
