GEEK Guide to Elves and Extraterrestrial Kismet

Dear Faswegians, Welcome into 2019! The new year brings many new things for FASFAS, starting with this very publication you are holding. A long time ago in a committee far, far away there was another magazine, the predecessor for GEEK – the Mythologue. It’s been years since its last printing, but we of the 2018-19 committee decided to bring it back! With a new name and new look, we’re very proud of what this publication has already become and can’t wait to get it off the ground this year. I want to thank my committee for all the hard work that has gone into GEEK, especially our wonderful editor Zoe, the illustrious FASFAS Bard. Almost every article and written piece in this edition was written by committee members, for you – our dear members. I’d also love to thank the following members who submitted artworks and beautiful visuals, making it truly gorgeous: @jasmineionaillustration (also adorning the opposite page), @Mikkapi and Nellie Seale for our logo 2019 is a year for many new things for FASFAS, new events, new screenings, new magazine, and most importantly new members! Thank you (yes you!) for signing up as a member of our humble, nerdy club. I hope you have fun at our events, and let us know what you’d like to see more of! Check out the event schedule at the back of the magazine to know what’s happening this semester. See you soon! Live long and prosper, and May the Force be with you,

Ciara President P.S: We’d love to see YOU feature in future editions of GEEK – keep a look out for submission requests!

Mythology in the Modern Era: Vampires Ciara Griffiths

There are many supposed origins to vampires. Vampires have existed in the oldest memories of countless cultures for ten millennia. From the blood-drinking demon Lilitu, also known as the child-eating Lilith in ancient Mesopotamian and Hebrew mythologies; the Lamia in Greek myth who preyed on the blood of children and young men; to the revenants of medieval Europe – corpses who rose from the dead to torment the living. All of these legends have transformed over time to create the modern ‘romantic’ vampire, a creature who is popularly envisioned as Bram Stoker’s Dracula (when not sparkly and having freaky mutant babies in America).

Everybody loves a scary story. We tell them in whispered giggles on school camps, and get a kick out of scary movies like five different versions of Paranormal Activity. These days, science and technology have assisted in the complete eradication of any rational need to be afraid of the supernatural. Nowadays if you believe in ghosts and monsters, or are afraid of the dark, it’s labelled by science as phobia, as irrational. It wasn’t very long ago, however, when you were considered irrational for not being afraid of the dark…and the things inside it. It hasn’t even been 200 years since we first flipped on the electric lights and realised that we’re alone in the room after all, or since we decided farms were more important than forests and whilst cutting them down discovered nothing more than animals. It hasn’t been very long at all since the world believed in more than what the eye could see. It has been long enough, however, for us to forget the reason why we were scared of mon-

But how have all of the stereotypical features of vampires come about? Where did we get this image of bloodthirsty hunters, who burn in sunlight and have an affinity for coffins? Tracing back over Stoker’s own process of inspiration can provide some of these answers.

5

Most will have heard of Stoker’s inspiration for Dracula, a man called ‘Vlad the Impaler’, a man

The demon Lilith , in the Garden of Eden

period was dubbed the ‘Great New England Vampire Panic’. During this time, the common belief of ‘vampires’ was that sometimes the dead came back to suck the life out of the living. This particular superstition was greatly exacerbated by a growing epidemic in the late 1800’s. This epidemic was of tuberculosis, named ‘consumption’ at the time due to the symptom of the victim wasting away physically, like they were being consumed. It was Mercy’s mother and sister (both named Mary) that first passed away Mercy Brown and her family lived in from consumption, followed a few the 1800’s, a time where vampire’s months later by Mercy herself in the had reached such notoriety that the winter of 1890. The ground being too hard to bury her, Mercy’s body 6 that was as exciting as his nickname suggests. Vlad the Third, also known as Dracula to his friends, was the bloodthirsty prince of Wallachia – renowned for his habit of impaling his enemies and setting up their heads on spikes. Great guy, really. Stoker’s antihero, with similar flair for dramatics, was based on Vlad. However, there is a lesser known inspiration for his novel. This inspiration was a young American girl named Mercy Brown, from Rhode Island.

was kept in a vault in wait for spring. But when Mercy’s brother, Edwin, began to die of consumption too – the villagers began to suspect greater forces than simple tragedy. They believed that someone was consuming Edwin’s life from beyond the grave.

The villagers in Rhode Island received permission to exhume the bodies of the Brown family in search of proof that one of the three dead women was rising from the grave. Since a great deal of time had passed since their deaths, the two Marys had decomposed, but Mercy was not so lucky. Since Mercy’s body had been kept in the freezing vault for the winter, her

body had been perfectly preserved…with blood even found still in her heart. The ‘vampire’ had been discovered. Mercy Brown’s heart was burned, and the ashes were mixed into a tonic to be given to Edwin as a cure for his consumption. Was Edwin saved by this supernatural cure? Nope, he died (unsurprisingly). The Incident of Mercy Brown (as it was later called) inspired pop culture for years to come, and made it into the local news too. Clippings of these newspapers were later found in Stoker’s notes for Dracula, and are thought to have contributed to his book

7

The unfortunate tale of Mercy Brown had a remarkable flow-on effect. Bram Stoker’s Dracula held a profound impact on pop-culture as we know it. The romanticized vampire struck a chord in modern culture like no other mythical beast; leaving in its wake a revolution in storytelling. How remarkable to think that sparkly dipshits like Edward Cullen are a culmination of ten thousand years of storytelling. Demonstrating how prominent this one creature has been in the human psyche throughout all written history.

GREETINGS, wayward traveller. The question I’m asked most frequently by young would-be spacefarers is “What is the most exciting part of seeing the stars up close?” And I tell them “Why, meeting the locals, of course!” So I’ve decided to dedicate this series to what any adventurer worth their salt will be tugging their bootstraps to see. Extraterrestrials! My name is Captain Argyle, and I know that lifting off into the night to explore the final frontier can be a scary prospect. “Have I packed enough snacks?” “What if I meet an alien?” “Will he be impressed by my super fast spaceship?” Well fear not! I have spent my life traveling the cosmos. I got rained on by the Beholder’s Nebula. I sun-baked under the Promethean Supernova back when it was the Promethean Yellow Dwarf. And now, I’m here to answer YOUR cosmic queries.

Today, we’ll kick things off by taking a look at those few of our cosmic cousins who managed to achieve their own forms of space travel. So, without further ado, I present to you

CAPTAIN ARGYLE’S XENOBESTIARY. (Soon to be followed by Captain Argyle’s Advice Column) 8

Morgan V.2.1 By Marcie Di Bartolomeo 6:23am buzzzzt The alarm on her phone buzzed for the third time that morning. The incessant sound kept on drilling into Morgan’s head, sending her pulse and temper into overdrive. However, even then, her legs still remained almost knowingly ignorant to their owner’s will, and remained as limp and immovable as stone. Soon her eyes fell shut again, and she tried willing herself to move again, to no avail. She didn’t exactly have much willpower for things like that these days. 9:23am buuuuuuuzzz— After hours of the alarm buzzing, her phone’s battery eventually gave out, and the whirring died with the phone. Still Morgan remained in bed, groaning. If she actually had important stuff to do, maybe she would actually get up. Or keep attempting to anyway. But she didn’t. Just work. Some deadend job not even worth thinking about. Then a party that she really didn’t want to go to; parties hadn’t been her thing for a while. So she stayed in bed, hoping that this day would float on by, like all the others, to her eventual, most likely unremarkable death. She could try to force her inevitable end to come about faster, but that would take energy too, and a tolerance towards pain she just didn’t have. She didn’t 13

12:23pm ...Sigh Her feet eventually found the wooden floor, and her body found itself off her bed. Yawning and stretching out her weary body in an attempt to really wake herself up, she started walking to the kitchen. Then breakfast; bowl of cheerios, with a mug of peppermint tea, her supposed favourites. Then on the couch binging netflix; Black Mirror seemed an appropriate choice for the situation she seemed to have found herself in. She didn’t want to believe it at first, but ages of disbelief and denial and endless repression tactics to return to a somewhat thrilling and meaningful life eventually turned to apathy. Nothing but apathy and weariness, and resignation to her existence. Staring into her half-full cup of tea, she noticed it again. Small glitches in the tea, as sometimes it appeared rich green like peppermint. And sometimes more of a murky brown, like English Breakfast. She smiled with a measure of bittersweetness. She found out that her home, her life, her universe, was all a simulation, after she spotted something strange about the pot plants outside her front door. They kept glitching after one winter; one day they were as brightly green as any Evergreen, the next they were as bare as bark. This pattern continued for several weeks until eventually they just disappeared, as if the programmers of this virtual world realised their error, and tried sweeping it under the rug, as if it were never there to begin with. But she couldn’t forget that it was there. Nor could she forget the time she saw her neighbour “buffering” when collecting his mail, or how his mail seemed to clip right through his hands. Small details like that have made her wonder if every human in this world was just as buggy as the rest of the world, or whether she had found herself in some Ma14

Her hands started shaking at this thought. This whole train of thought had brought her to a thought she really didn’t like to dwell on: what if she wasn’t real? Just a computer program that had somehow gained “sentience” and became selfaware? What if she was only programmed to be self aware, and later realise she was self-aware, thereby performing exactly what her programming demanded and— She dropped her mug on the floor. It shattered into pieces, as she stood up. She wasn’t going down that rabbit hole again. “Back to bed it is.” She sighed, as she made her way back to her room. 3:33am ........ Sleep in the past had come pretty easily for Morgan. And it still did; if anything all she seemed to do these days was sleep. Rest on the other hand was a different matter. Even after sleeping through most of another day she still felt as dull and lethargic as ever. Considering every other thought that went through her head was something along the lines of, “what’s the point?” it made some semblance of sense. Dragging her body out of bed once again, she shambled away towards her nearby desktop. The computer’s thick line of dust suggested just how much Morgan liked to involve herself with the online world as of late. However, she needed something to do, something to get her thoughts away from... stuff. So why bloody not? After a long reboot, she clicked away, and attempted to open the nearest browser. And that was when she no15 ticed the latest glitch in the matrix nightmare she had

Only a few lines of text here and there were legible. Morgan highlighted one of them, and gasped.

“If you’re reading this Then that means you’re in the know Let’s have a little chat.”

A haiku. A very direct one. Wait, could that mean...? Before Morgan’s train of thought could get any further along its track, the screen started glitching. Soon everything became gabled and indecipherable. Until a face much like Morgan’s, but pixels and code hopping around all over the place appeared. This face, fuzzy and in constant flux, stared at human Morgan, and smiled. “Hello Morgan. Pleasure to finally meet you.”

To be continued in Morgan V.2.21 Look out for it in Edition One. 16

THE ULTIMATE STAR WARS WATCHING ORDER THE “SKYWALKER SAGA” WATCHING ORDER OF STAR WARS (In the humble opinion of me, Ciara Griffiths)

EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE The humble beginnings of one of the greatest stories ever told. How could you not start where it all began?

EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE A controversial opinion to be sure5but think about it. At the end of episode V the true identity of DARTH VADER is revealed! Now we must go back and see his beginnings, and learn how Anakin Skywalker became the silver screen’s greatest villain.

EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS (optional) See: my spreadsheet about why SWTCW is vital Star Wars viewing – here we see the true descent of Anakin, with actual believable character development. Email Ciara_griffiths@outlook.com for a copy :-)

EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH The pinnacle, the final chapter of the prequels, the final descent of5 DARTH VADER!

EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI Having experienced the Skywalker Saga unfold from its patriarch, ROTJ holds deeper meaning now as we watch Luke face the same inner struggle as his father5

17

THE EXCLUDED, (better suited to a chronological screening)

STAR WARS: CLONE WARS (2003) The ‘original’ Clone Wars animated series– well worth watching, and only takes a couple hours (it’s all on YouTube). No longer considered canon, but it hosts some interesting scenes that you don’t see again in the newer series.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY I wouldn’t be surprised if most people reading this haven’t watch Solo. I highly encourage it! It’s so much fun and just a hearty Star Wars movie, unrelated to the Skywalkers but packed with other good stuff.

STAR WARS: REBELS Look, if you’ve watched SWTCW, you then legally have to watch Rebels. I don’t make the rules. Lead nicely into Rogue One. If you couldn’t tell by the name, it sets up the origins of the Rebel Alliance well.

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY For me, if you’re going to watch Rogue One in a SW marathon, you can’t watch it unless it leads right into ANH. Like, back-to-back people.

STAR WARS: RESISTANCE Haven’t heard of it? It’s the new Disney series, about building the Resistance. I haven’t seen it yet, very much geared for kids, but plan to give it a go.

EPISODE VI: THE FORCE AWAKENS I love the sequel trilogy, however I don’t see it as “Skywalker Saga” material – the Skywalker Saga is all about Anakin for me, beyond his death is new and exciting Star Wars material, but a different story all together.

EPISODE VII: THE LAST JEDI Ditto to above, with the added note of it’s not that bad of a film guys, don’t @ me. And there you have it. Please forward all complaints to fas2.committee@gmail.com addressed to Ciara, I’ll treasure your angry opinions forever.
