A NEW NAME. A BOLD FUTURE.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis is proud to announce the naming of its College of Business Administration as the Ed G. Smith College of Business. This marks the first named college in UMSL’s history, officially approved by the University of Missouri Board of Curators on June 26, 2025. This naming represents a transformative opportunity to bolster, elevate and sustain a broader educational experience for future generations of UMSL students. The Ed G. Smith College of Business will reach new levels of distinction — advancing its role as a regional and national leader in business education, social mobility and workforce development.

Already home to more than 30,000 alumni — most of whom live and work in the St. Louis area — the college offers nationally recognized programs in online MBA, international business, cybersecurity and supply chain analytics. Guided by a new strategic plan and led by Dean Shu Schiller, the Ed G. Smith College of Business will expand student success, career readiness and innovation.

DEAR FRIENDS,

On behalf of our UMSL business community, I am proud to announce the naming of its College of Business Administration as the Ed G. Smith College of Business. The first named college in UMSL’s history was affirmed by the University of Missouri Board of Curators on June 26, 2025.

This is a defining moment for the university — a milestone that will strengthen, transform and elevate the UMSL student experience for generations to come. The naming of the Ed G. Smith College of Business represents an investment that touches every part of the student journey — from scholarships and supportive learning environments to real-world experiences and global opportunities.

We are indebted to Ed G. Smith, a two-time graduate from the College of Business. Smith’s philanthropic support to UMSL expanded over two decades and is rooted in his own story—one of perseverance, opportunity and transformation. Born in St. Louis, like many UMSL students, he was the first in his family to go to college. His decision to enroll at UMSL changed the course of his life. Smith went on to earn both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College of Business, launching a distinguished career in marketing and entrepreneurship.

The 2024-25 academic year concluded with great success. The college successfully extended our AACSB accreditation in both business and accounting for six years. In May 2025, 173 undergraduate students graduated with a bachelor’s degree, 93 graduated with a master’s degree, and 52 students received graduate certificates.

Our students are hardworking, resilient and high-achieving. In their own words below, they described how their effort has been fruitful and how the college has contributed to their success. I hope you enjoy their stories and feel inspired by their passion.

Shu Schiller,

Ed G. Smith College of Business University of Missouri–St. Louis

“As a full-time mom balancing work, school and life, UMSL’s College of Business gave me more than just knowledge, it gave me belief in myself. The mentorship, flexibility and real-world projects helped me grow into a confident leader ready to take on any challenge.

I’m truly grateful for the support that helped me keep going, even on the hardest days.”

“The 2024-25 school year at UMSL has brought me many opportunities for growth as an individual and as a student. During this year, UMSL Business helped me to connect and network, which led to an internship. Through guidance from UMSL faculty and students, I have learned many things!”

YARELY ZAMACONA, BS IN ACCOUNTING

“Over the last year, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone countless times. I met some amazing people, joined the entrepreneur club in the fall and became an officer in the spring. While in the club, I created and pitched a business idea to local investors. Not only did I win 3rd place, but I got to learn from the owner of Pattyscheesecakes. I also had the honor of interning with Sugarwitch. I’m so thankful for everyone who was a part of this journey with me, and I can’t wait for whatever comes next!”

NICK EBERHARDT, BSBA

“‘Growth’ is the word that sums up this year at UMSL. Professional growth through internships, leadership roles and the RISE Academy. Academic growth through engaging in and completing difficult classes. Personal growth through embracing challenges outside my comfort zone and developing meaningful relationships on campus that will last a lifetime.”

ALEXANDRIA PAUBEL, BS IN ACCOUNTING

“I truly appreciated the wisdom my professors shared this past academic year. They led with knowledge and understanding, creating an environment where everyone could grow and learn together. This past academic year was an incredible experience for me personally. I was reminded of why I enjoy being at UMSL. It truly has so much to offer, and I am glad I get to reap the benefits of being here.”

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

AACSB DUAL ACCREDITATIONS

The University of Missouri–St. Louis College of Business continues to strengthen its reputation as a leader in business education and workforce preparation in the St. Louis community and beyond. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business recently reaffirmed UMSL’s standing as an elite business university, renewing UMSL’s dual accreditation for all business and accounting programs, both undergraduate and graduate. AACSB International was founded in 1916 and is considered the hallmark of excellence in business education. Only 6% of business schools worldwide meet the AACSB standards, and fewer than 2% of business schools worldwide maintain dual accreditation in business and accounting.

2024 UMSL SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT KICKED OFF ITS SEVEN-YEAR SERIES WITH STRONG OPENING EVENT

The theme of the 2024 Sustainability Summit, hosted by UMSL's Global Leadership and Management Department, was "Energy Transition in Pursuit of Net Zero." The summit featured keynote speakers Mekala Krishnan from McKinsey & Company and Jill Graftenreed from Boeing, along with

experts from Accenture and Nidec Motors. Krishnan emphasized data-driven solutions to sustainability challenges, while Graftenreed outlined Boeing's decarbonization strategy, including fleet renewal and renewable energy research. The event also addressed decarbonization, sustainability in business and climate change emissions. This inaugural conference marks the beginning of UMSL’s commitment to tackling complex sustainability issues and fostering collaborative solutions.

UMSL’S MASTER’S IN CYBERSECURITY PROGRAM RANKED NO. 3 IN THE COUNTRY BY FORTUNE.

The master’s in cybersecurity program at the University of Missouri–St. Louis enrolled its first cohort in the 2019-20 school year, and it hasn’t taken long for the program to rise to elite status. In October, Fortune Media released its 2025 ranking of universities with the best in-person master’s in cybersecurity, and UMSL checked in at No. 3 in the nation, up from No. 9 last year.

NEW DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION COHORT FEATURES STUDENTS WITH DIVERSE PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUNDS

UMSL Daily introduces some of the key reasons why members of the DBA cohort, Class of 2027, chose UMSL’s DBA program. Val Joyner was inspired by an NPR segment with Dr. Ekin Pellegrini, Dr. Cindy Goodwin-Sak, Dr. Scott Morris and Eboni Valentine. Pellegrini told the story of the time one of the DBA students was starting his dissertation journey; because he and his wife both held leadership positions at their jobs and had young kids to ferry around on Saturdays, Sunday was really his only time to work on his dissertation and he needed

Pellegrini’s help with the process. She opened her home to him for a few Sundays in a row, and they worked together at her kitchen table to get to the point where he could move forward on his own. Joyner found the dedication of the faculty and the program’s emphasis on real-world application particularly motivating.

ACCOUNTING GOLD STANDARD

Earning recognition as a Gold chapter in Beta Alpha Psi, an honor society for accounting, finance and information systems, is not necessarily a simple challenge, no matter how easy the accounting faculty and students at the University of Missouri–St. Louis might make it seem. For the 29th time since the UMSL chapter, Gamma Psi, was formed in 1972, the group was awarded Gold status (formerly called Superior) after not just meeting but exceeding the requirements in the 2023-24 school year. UMSL’s Beta Alpha Psi students participated in 10 professional events and six community service events, along with 11 “reaching out” events involving other student organizations at UMSL and Beta Alpha Psi chapters at other universities.

WHERE LEADERSHIP TAKES ROOT RISE Academy

RISE Academy was born from a simple, urgent insight: professional confidence doesn’t begin after you land your first job. It begins long before in the moments when you’re unsure, untested, and just beginning to find your voice.

Too many high-potential students leave college with strong academic foundations but little experience in the professional skills that employers silently screen for: how to advocate for yourself, how to build a network, how to show up in a room and communicate with clarity and presence.

At UMSL, we set out to change that.

Core components:

The inaugural RISE Academy —— Experience 2 semesters (November

Monthly group coaching sessions

One-on-one mentorship meetings

– May)

Confidence is a Skill

Communicating strengths

Time and energy management

Boundary-setting

Interview and pitch readiness

RISE Academy is a two-semester professional development and mentorship program housed in the Ed G. Smith College of Business. It was inspired by a women’s leadership conference and reimagined to be radically inclusive. Students learn to lead themselves before they lead others. They build practical communication skills, cultivate executive presence and expand their professional networks with the guidance of industry mentors who believe in paying it forward.

THIS ISN'T JUST A SKILLS PROGRAM. IT'S A LAUNCHPAD FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF VALUES-DRIVEN LEADERS.

WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS

NOVEMBER: COMMUNICATING STRENGTHS + NETWORKING

Students crafted elevator pitches using their Clifton Strengths results and practiced them in rotating mentor conversations. Guest speaker: Liam Darmody on LinkedIn branding.

DECEMBER: IN-PERSON NETWORKING

Students navigated real-world networking scenarios with confidence, focusing on awkward conversation recovery, professional body language and dining etiquette. Through immersive stations and mentor coaching, students practiced handling unscripted moments with poise and authenticity.

JANUARY: LEADERSHIP + TEAMWORK

Betsy Cohen (St. Louis Mosaic Project) led a dynamic session on interviews, workplace culture and the mindset of resilience for international students.

FEBRUARY: TIME + ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Through hands-on activities, students identified core values and learned time-blocking strategies. They practiced boundary-setting and saying “no” with confidence.

MARCH: THE CONFIDENCE PARADOX

We explored impostor syndrome, self-worth and the truth that confidence is built through action, not perfection. Students left with new language to describe their value.

CONFIDENCE ISN’T SOMETHING YOU HAVE.

IT’S SOMETHING YOU BUILD.

WE CALL IT THE CONFIDENCE PARADOX

Most students believe they need to feel confident before they speak up, apply for a role or lead a team. But real confidence is born from action. You take the risk and grow into the role.

At RISE, we don’t ask students to fake confidence. We teach them how to build it.

That means understanding their strengths, naming their fears and learning practical tools to regulate stress, pitch their skills and navigate high-stakes conversations. We deconstruct impostor syndrome. We normalize the voice of self-doubt. And we practice anyway.

Because confidence isn’t about always knowing what to do. It’s about trusting you’ll figure it out.
